Kho kho team fired up Learners’ dedication promises to earn them national title
} Jabulani Dlamini A BUMPY, thorny, dust-swept field might be all they have to practice on, but for the Grassland Intermediate School’s kho kho team not even these adversities will deter them from achieving their goal. Express visited the school recently as the team prepared to take on the very best schools in South Africa in this fast-paced sport. Sello Ikaneng, the team’s coach and a teacher at the school, said the school would represent the province in the national finals in Pretoria from 9 to 16 December. The sport of kho kho traces its origins back to India where it is a traditional sport which many believe is a modified form of the popular run-chase game, basically involving running and chasing an opponent until you touch them. Refilwe Mahlelehlele, the team’s captain, was confident of victory in Pretoria and oozed confidence that they would bring home the trophy. “We are going there for victory and nothing else – of course we will bring back the trophy,” Refilwe said, smiling. Refilwe’s sentiments were echoed by Ikaneng who said they were training hard for the nationals. “We will come back with the trophy. We are training hard and our learners are dedicated,” Ikaneng said. Asked how they raised funds for the trip, Mokgabi Ramaphiri, the school’s sports overseer, said they had received help from the department as well as from a local businessman. “Through these donated funds we were able to buy the learners sneakers so they can practice, because previously, with the hot summer weather, their feet got burnt by the hot sand,” Ramaphiri said. Bongani Mgemane, team manager and an administration clerk at the school, told Express the team, made up of gr. 5 and gr. 6 learners and contesting in the u.13

) KHO KHO has its origins as a sport in India and is an adaptation of the popular “run-chase” game. ) There are nine players on the chasing team and two on the running team on the field at any given time. ) Each team has seven minutes to chase and touch out as many opposing players as possible with the team that has the most touches after each has had their sevenminute turn, being declared the winner. ) Points are deducted for chasing players who cross the line from the side they are chasing on.
