Lekgotla for AET held
THE Free State Department of Education will host the Adult Education and Training (AET) Lekgotla to come up with strategies to change the face of adult learning and recruit more people to enrol in the sector. The lekgotla, which will be held at the President Hotel in Bloemfontein today and tomorrow, starting at 10:00, will also look into creating a platform for AET practitioners to have constructive engagements on the future of the sector in terms of functionality and good performance. “AET plays a vital role in developing adults and out-of-school youths to reach their full potential and actively participate in economic activities of the country,” says Tate Makgoe, Free State Education MEC. Some of the challenges concerning adult learning that will be addressed are learner registration and attendance, as well as the
poor scholastic performance of learners in comparison with mainstream schools. There are 200 Public Adult Learning Centres, three of which are for learners with disabilities. Bearing testimony to the importance of adult learning is Sheila Putsoane, who dropped out of school in 1996 when in gr. 10. She was forced to drop out and fend for her mother after her father’s death. She registered for level 4 at the Vukuzenzele Adult Centre in Thabong in 2005 and obtained her gr. 12 qualification in 2007. She furthered her studies, obtained an Abet certificate and diploma in Education, an advanced certificate in Education and is now studying towards obtaining her honours degree. She is an Abet centre manager at the Tsamaiso Adult Centre in Welkom.
