Ace goes back to school Premier visits local school to motivate learners, teachers
} Sidwell Guduka “WHO is that new learner sitting in the classroom and why is he not wearing a school uniform? “He is not a new learner – he is the premier of the Free State!” The children at the Bainsvlei Combined School in Bainsvlei, outside Bloemfontein, were surprised to see that Premier Ace Magashule had joined them for lessons when the school re-opened last Wednesday. The premier, who was accompanied by officials from his office, visited the school to motivate teachers and learners to excel in their studies. He interacted with both the teachers and learners during his visit. “Our visit to this school is to motivate the teachers and learners, and to say well done to the matric class of 2014. “We are also here to encourage the class of 2015 and the rest of the learners to work hard this year. They must know that nothing beats hard work,” Magashule told reporters. “This school is doing very well. I’m impressed with the work that is being done by the principal and his team. In 2009, Bainsvlei achieved a mere 14% matric pass rate, but they keep improving. The school obtained a 100% pass rate in both 2011 and 2013. “It shows that the teachers and principal are doing a great job. They deserve a pat on the back,” he said. The school achieved an 80%, 93% and 98% matric pass rate in 2010, 2012 and 2014 respectively. Tau Seheri, the principal of the Bainsvlei Combined School, expressed his delight with Magashule’s visit. “We appreciate the premier’s visit to our school. It really means a lot to both the teachers and learners. He was just here to motivate us to work hard and we appreciate that,” Seheri said. The majority of the learners at Bainsvlei come from surrounding farms, but a lot more children from the townships have been enrolled at the school of late. ) For more stories, visit www.expressnews.co.za.

New shoes for a new year } Sidwell Guduka
THE days of going to school with broken or tattered school shoes are over for the learners of the Mabeoana Primary School. The Genesis ARK – an organisation established by charitable, ambitious, influential youth from Bloemfontein – donated new school shoes and socks to 77 learners at the Mangaung-based school last Friday. This is part of their
Back-to-School Campaign. Kgosi Mocwagae, chairman of Genesis ARK, said donating those shoes to needy school kids was part of his organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. “We saw a need to come here and donate shoes to these children, because they are from underprivileged families. We are happy to have the opportunity to impact the lives of others in a good way,”
‘They can now attend school feeling comfortable.’ X Modiki Lekaka Mocwagae told Express. “We want to thank our donors
such as Dr Grace Ramosoana of the Universitas Hospital and Phatsoane Henney Attorneys for donating those shoes to our organisation. This event would not have been possible without their involvement,” he said. One of the recipients, Kgalalelo Mokgadi, a gr. 2 learner, was overwhelmed. “I am very happy to receive these shoes. The ones I had were not in good condition.” Modiki Lekaka, an organiser of
the event and a teacher at the school, expressed her gratitude. “We are so thankful. It will surely grow the learners’ self-confidence. They can now attend school feeling comfortable. “Most of the learners at our school come from homes where both parents are unemployed and fully depend on the government social grant,” she explained. ) Read more news at www.express-news.co.za.
UFS welcomes new students
} Sidwell Guduka THE new first-years at the University of the Free State (UFS) have been advised to balance their lives between academics and
socials – and warned against being complacent in their studies. These were the words of welcome to newly-enrolled Kovsie students this past weekend. The first-years had been invited to bring their parents along to interact with university officials and to explore the campus. Speaking at the welcoming ceremony held at Red Square on the University of the Free State Bloemfontein campus, Dr Choice Makhetha, vice-rector: external relations at the UFS, prepared students for what is to come. “Once your loved ones and parents have left, you will be in charge of your own lives. You will have to make decisions for yourself, taking full responsibility for your lives What you eat or drink will be your business,” she said. “Whether you go to classes or not will also be your own decision. “Whether you join friends or you make time for yourself, is up to you. Whether you sleep or you study overnight will be your decision. “So those who get this kind of freedom for the first time must tread carefully and allow their conscience to guide them,” Makhetha said. “Remember whatever choices you make, good or bad, there will be consequences.” She said the students had chosen an exceptional institution to further their education, one that has zero tolerance for racism, sexism, discrimination and intimidation. “You have chosen to study at the UFS for a particular degree. How you use your 24

broadly on the subject and do not just depend on the material you will be given in the class.” Encouraging the students to use the opportunities available at the university, she told them about the opportunity first-years have to experience international exposure. “Some of you will have the chance to travel the world to go to Japan, China, UK, USA, and to travel our beautiful African continent. Use these opportunities. “On campus you will meet other students who come from different countries. Make use of these opportunities and build a bigger circle and a broader network.” Makhetha also encouraged students to respect everybody on the campus, irrespective of the positions they held. “You have chosen to be part of the UFS family. That also means you have chosen to treat other people with respect, love and dignity. “It doesn’t matter who that person is, whether he is a cleaner or lecturer; we all have one thing in common Z our humanity.” UFS will be hosting the global leadership summit in July later this year. The summit is held every second year and it brings participating students from countries accross the world. “We are looking forward to hosting this event. As many as 180 international students will be taking part in the summit. Let’s use this opportunity to interact with the world.” ) Like our facebook page Express-News or follow us @Express_News03.

Never too old to learn . . . } Jabulani Dlamini AT 66, Lesadi Moserwa has 14 grandchildren, three of whom stay with her and still attend school. It is the frustration of not being able to help them with their homework that Moserwa says necessitated her going back to school. Last week, Moserwa received her Adult Basic Education and Training (Abet) level 4 certificate and she has become the toast of her class. The stocky old lady says she decided to go back to school to gain some knowledge and to learn how to speak English. “When English-speaking people phoned me I could not understand what they were saying and I had to stop strangers in the street to read my letters for me,” she says with a smile. Puseletso Motlhodi, centre manager of the Ikemeleng Adult Centre based at the Maserona Intermediate School in the
Dipudungoaneng Village near Thaba Nchu, says of the 19 learners that registered, ten enrolled for the level 4 certificates and Moserwa was amongst the four that passed. “We are very proud of MaMoserwa, she is a true inspiration to her fellow learners, some of whom are less than half her age,” a beaming Motlhodi says. Motlhodi says the adult centre, situated about 20 km south of Thaba Nchu, also serves the surrounding villages of Kommesdrift, Nogaspost, Yorksford, Woodbridge 1 and 2 in addition to Gladstone which is commonly known as Dipudungoaneng. Anna Rhini (31), Moserwa’s classmate, says Moserwa was like a mother to all of them. “She always encouraged us to learn and having seen an old lady like her not give up on learning, I was really inspired, especially by how well she did,” Rhini says.
Mokone Makhele, who at 22 is the youngest in this year’s class, says Moserwa’s story once again proves that one is never too old for education. Bennet Choane (57) says he just returned to improve his Mathematics marks. “Young people must know that without education you are nothing, even matric is not enough these days,” he says. Asked whether she plans to continue with her education and finish her level four (gr. 12 equivalent), Moserwa says she will stop here. “What is the use to learn further, where will I work?” she asks matter-of-factly. It is only when pressed for an answer as to why she wants to stop learning having come so far with her studies that she reveals the reason she intends to stop. “I am worried that my pension will be cut if I become too educated,” she says. ) Watch Moserwa encourage other senior citizens to go back to school on www.express-news.co.za.

Revolving restaurant returns
} Jabulani Dlamini
THE iconic revolving restaurant on top of the Free State Provincial Government Building in Elizabeth Street, formerly known as the CR Swart Building, will soon be operational again. Refurbished at a cost of a cool R3, 8 million, the restaurant will only operate at night. A canteen, which is part of the restaurant, will serve the building’s many workers during the day.
The restaurant’s other attractive feature, apart from providing a backdrop of panoramic views of the city, is that it revolves all the way around, thereby giving diners and day visitors a 360 degree view of the City of Roses. “One complete revolution takes about one hour, so you can enjoy your food comfortably while you take in the view,” Charles Pittaway, the Public Works architect responsible for the project, said. Although work on the restaurant itself is complete, Pittaway said no restaurateur to run the establishment had been appointed
yet. They are just tying up a few loose ends. “The lift still needs to be fixed and locked so that it only moves between the ground floor and the restaurant,” he said. “This is only for diners who visit the restaurant at night.” Sam Mashinini, the Public Works and Infrastructure MEC, said he could not believe the of damage that has been caused to the restaurant in the last few years. “Who can cause so much damage? Why can’t people just leave things alone that are not theirs?” Mashinini lamented.
According to Pittaway, much of the electrical wiring, as well as fittings, pipes and movables, had been stolen from the building. Practically everything had to be replaced. According to Mashinini, the tender to find a suitable restaurateur has not been advertised yet. This will happen soon. ) Watch Public Works officials convince MEC Sam Mashinini that the restaurant really does revolve on www.express-news.co.za.
Vegetable garden paying dividends } Jabulani Dlamini RATHER than sit at home and expect hand-outs, Motloang Tsubane has decided to take control of his own destiny. The 29-year-old has started a vegetable garden on his grandfather’s farm about 30 km outside Bloemfontein on the Dewetsdorp Road and it is slowly paying dividends. “From my garden I am able to supply crèches, schools and hawkers with fresh veggies for which they pay me,” he says. “In addition to the veggies, I have three milk cows whose milk I also sell in the township.” On the 2 258-hectare farm, his grandfather Hlalele Tsubane is a cattle farmer and Motloang is employed to look after his grandparents’ farm along with the workers. “With the salary that my grandfather pays me I started buying seeds to start the garden and I also had to clear the weeds
on the large patch of ground first before I could plant anything,” he says. At schools, the vegetables are used in the feeding schemes while the teachers also buy some for themselves, Motloang says. “When I have fed my cows well, they give me up to 40 litres of milk daily, which I also sell in town,” he says. Motloang’s garden boasts carrots, green beans, onions, cabbage, beetroot, lettuce, tomatoes, spinach and cucumber. “I want to ask for assistance to buy myself vegetable tunnels to protect my crops as my veggies are destroyed by the cold in winter,” he says. The young man says he wants to thank the Almighty for having given him grace and adds that he believes he would be in jail if he did not decide to work for his grandfather. “I want to encourage other young men out there who are perhaps loitering to pursue their talents, whether it is woodwork, painting or even farming,” he says.

Christianity follows a path of complete trust } Past. Mutombo Kumwimba YOU might be sick and pray for healing; the sickness may resist your prayers. Being poor you might pray against poverty. Through all these unpleasant times your heart should continue walking in trust with God, knowing He is busy working out the answers for you. If we truly trust God, we can never give Him a time frame in which He should do things for us. The fact that we have accepted Him in our lives can never extend His mandate on the throne; and the fact that some reject
Him can never overthrow Him from His throne. He is God and can do what He says He can do . . . just trust in his majesty. Matthew 10:7 down: When Jesus sent His disciples into different places to preach, heal and deliver those who were possessed; He gave them a strong command not to take anything with them for the journey . . . In verse 16 He said: “I’m sending you out like sheep among the wolves”. Here we can see that they needed to take extra things for the journey to make it easier, but Jesus refused, the question is Why?
The answer is: Jesus simply wanted His disciples to fully walk in trust with Him, knowing that God would provide for them in any situation they find themselves in. They simply had to learn how to walk in trust with Jesus Christ. Jesus knew that if they did not trust in Him the mission of redemption would be impossible. He wanted to show His disciples that He was the only reliable supplier of all fundamental issues of life. Dear Readers, if you can’t trust God, the future will be very uncertain. You who are rich, do not focus on your wealth, rather trust in God only, and you
who are poor keep your trust in God to bless you. The sick should trust in God for healing and the healthy should trust in God to maintain their health. Truly, the future is bright to those who fully express their trust in God in the midst of either joy or sadness. When you fully express your trust in God, He will put His peace in your heart. ) To hear more of these anointed messages visit us at the New Horizon Ministry at the Joe Solomon School in Heidedal every Sunday from 09:00. ‘MPs stopped me from answering questions’ – Zuma HE has never refused to answer questions in parliament. That is what Pres. Jacob Zuma said to SABC news on Monday. “The president has never refused to come to answer questions,” he told the public broadcaster. “I have been hearing those kinds of sloganeering out there. “Nobody has said I must come to parliament [and] I refused.” On 21 August, Economic Freedom Fighters MPs interrupted Zuma’s replies to questions by banging on their desks and chanting “pay back the money”. This was in reference to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s recommendation that Zuma repay that part of the R246 million spent on upgrades to his Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, home not related to security. Since then he has not returned to answer questions. “I went to Parliament. Members in Parliament stopped me from answering questions. I’m waiting,” he said.
“I’ve always gone to parliament. Parliaments are very respected institutions and I think as political parties we should take that into account. It is not a place to play around, it is not a place to shout slogans,” he said. “I have always gone to parliament, it is just a matter that is ballooned out of control, misleading the country,” he said. Zuma was expected back in parliament on 12 February to deliver the State of the Nation Address. Last week National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete urged EFF leader Julius Malema not to use Zuma’s address to demand that he answer questions on the Nkandla controversy. EFF members have vowed to disrupt his speech unless a special sitting of the National Assembly is scheduled for Zuma to answer questions. Mbete said Zuma would have an opportunity to respond to issues raised by MPs during the parliamentary debate on his address after 12 February. – News24
ANC denies talks over Malema’s return THE ANC has denied claims that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, was planning to return to the ruling party. “We are not aware of the report in The Citizen. There are no discussions between the ANC and Malema,” ANC spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa, said on Tuesday. “However, the ANC remains open to people who want to come back, who were members of the ANC before and left for whatever reason.” He said the ANC would not reject any person wanting to return “home”, because it was an organisation of the people. The Citizen reported earlier this week that Malema was in talks with the ANC to return after he was expelled as ANC
Youth League president and went on to become president of his own party, the EFF. According to the newspaper report ANC stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is mediating the talks between senior ANC leadership and Malema. Kodwa also dismissed the newspaper’s other claim that EFF MP Magdalene Moonsamy would also be returning to the ANC. “We are unaware of her return,” said Kodwa. “If Malema and others want to come back voluntarily, the ANC will always welcome them.” Malema could not immediately be reached for comment. – News24 X1PMFGAM-EX210115

NEWS
Be realistic about those resolutions EVERY YEAR we make New Year’s resolutions. The success rate for achieving these resolutions is very low. However, this does not deter us. Year-in and year-out we do the same thing. Some wise man said it is insanity to do the same thing again and again and expect different results. So let us see what we can do differently. The usual resolutions have to do with losing weight, going to church more regularly, reducing debt, taking better care of ourselves, quitting smoking or drinking, and helping others. The first thing to do is to write the resolutions down with timelines. They must be SMART – specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound. For example: I want to lose 10 kg by June; or I want to pay off two clothing accounts and close them by September. You must have a plan with details as to how you are going to achieve your resolutions. Have details as to what you should do and how you are going to do it. You should not have more than three resolutions. If you achieve two out of three it is a 66% success rate, but if you achieve two out of ten it is 20%. One sound idea is all you need. Choose a definite goal, and place all your energy, all your willpower, and all your effort into achieving that goal. It is easy to have excellent goals and plans, but you must have persistence. Willpower and desire, when properly combined, make an excellent pair. Lack of persistence is one of the major causes of failure. I read somewhere about a man who was digging for gold and found nothing. After
My view Kuni Ditira Advocate losing hope, he stopped digging and decided to sell the land. After quitting, he discovered that he had been only three feet from the gold. Another thing is: Never stop because men say no. The majority of unsuccessful people generally are influenced by the opinions of others. Close friends and relatives often handicap one through opinion and sometimes through ridicule, which is meant to be humorous. The next thing to keep in mind, is that if you do not know what it is, you will not achieve it. No one is ready for something until he or she believes they can acquire it. There are lots of people who believe themselves “doomed” to poverty and failure because of some strange force over which they believe they have no control. They are creators of their own misfortunes because of this negative belief, which is picked up by the subconscious mind and translated into its physical manifestation. They say it takes about 21 days to form a habit. If for example you want to lose weight, make it a habit to exercise and eat less. They say in losing weight 80% depends on what you eat and 20% on exercise. Those who

MISSING: The 15yearold Moleboheng Tladi has been missing since 20 December last year. She was last seen buying clothes and other items in the Bloemfontein cen tral business district (CBD). Moleboheng might also be in the Kelly’s View area, as she has some friends there. She was wearing green skinny jeans, white sandals and a white Tshirt with blue stripes when she went missing. have been on yo-yo diets will tell you it is easy to diet, but difficult to maintain your goal weight. So make it a habit or a lifestyle. It is essential for you to encourage the positive emotions as dominating forces of your mind and discourage and eliminate negative emotions. One comes finally to believe whatever one repeats to oneself. Make your mind believe positive thoughts. Anything acquired without effort and without cost is generally unappreciated, often discarded. You will therefore need to sacrifice to reach your resolutions. Definiteness of decision always requires courage. For 2014 I only had one resolution: to reduce my debts. I am happy to say I have achieved that. I have been able to pay off my
overdraft. I have reduced one of my bonds by almost 70%. I am not bragging – I am giving God the glory. For 2015 one of my resolutions is to play golf. I have made a pact with my colleague, so we are going to practise golf together. For you to achieve your resolutions, make a pact with a friend or a family member. ) Contribute to this column by sending your piece, of no more than 500 words, to Jabulani.Dlamini@volksblad.com, or call 051-404-7910. It is easy to have excellent goals and plans, but you must have persistence. Willpower and desire, when properly combined, make an excellent pair. Lack of persistence is one of the major causes of failure.

T20 cricket as never seen before EVERYTHING you thought was T20 entertainment is about to be hit out of the park as the inaugural Varsity Cricket season looks to challenge all the rules of conventional T20 cricket. During the six-day jamboree, innovations such as a Power Play Plus Over, Strategy Break and targets on the side of the field that will yield ten runs if hit, will ramp up the action as eight of South Africa’s top university sides slog it out to be crowned champions. The Power Play Plus Over can be called at any time during the batting innings. The call can only be made once the bowler is at the top of his mark for the new over and a change of bowler cannot be made once the Power Play Plus Over has been signalled. All runs scored during this over will be doubled, while any wicket that falls will cost the side five runs. These runs will be added to the extras column for the next six balls with the runs deducted for losing a wicket also deducted from the extras column. Extras such as wides and no-balls are also doubled during the Power Play Plus Over. Should a batsman lose his wicket during this over, he will be out, but the over will contin-
ue until it is completed. The targets on the side of the field will be erected between the boundary rope and the perimeter fence on the square boundaries on either side. Should a batsman hit these targets he, and the batting team, will be awarded ten runs. These runs are added to the batsman’s total. Such innovation will be encouraging attacking play and could see a batsman score as many as 20 runs off a single ball and will ensure that the action never stops. The Strategy Break will be taken after the tenth over and will allow team management as well as substitute fielders of the bowling team on to the field to discuss their approach for the next nine overs. The batting side will also be allowed to receive water from a teammate. The tournament will be played with pink balls. This offers spectators and possibly future South African cricket players a first-hand look at the future of cricket. The action-packed tournament is just another way Varsity Sports continues to innovate and break ground on the South African sporting landscape. – CricketSA

Bafana trip up in first match Focus on vital wins required from next two games } Sidwell Guduka BAFANA BAFANA made a disappointing start to their 2015 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) campaign as they lost 1-3 against Algeria on Monday. Shakes Mashaba’s troops dominated the game from the start and should have taken the lead in the 23rd minute, but Dean Furman’s rasping shot from the edge of the box rattled the woodwork. Bafana should have wrapped up the game in the first half, but their strikers were wasteful in front of goal. Tokelo Rantie was set free just before the half-hour mark, but his effort went just wide and South Africa were to rue their missed chances. However, they took the lead early in the second half through Thuso Phala after a good move involving Rantie and Andile Jali. They could have doubled their lead a few minutes later when they were awarded a penalty after Jali was brought down in the box, but

Rantie blasted the spot kick against the crossbar. After that missed penalty, Thulani Hlatshwayo headed the ball into his own net in an attempt to clear the danger. Bafana never recovered from that setback. Soon they were a goal down as Faouzi Ghoulam beat Darren Keet from close range, before Islam Silman sealed a come-from-behind victory for Algeria, as he slotted under Keet. The Bafana shot-stopper should have done a lot better to save the ball. The South Africans must win their next two Group C matches against Senegal on Friday (21:00) and Ghana on Tuesday (21:00) if they entertain any thoughts of making it through to the knockout stages of the tournament. Coach Mashaba said there were aspects that needed to be fixed ahead of their next fixtures. “We need to motivate the guys, talk to them, bring them back to their feet,” Mashaba said. “You look at the moments in
‘We need to motivate the guys, talk to them, bring them back to their feet.’ – Shakes Mashaba which we lost the game, at crucial times, and the kind of goals we conceded. “The first goal was an own goal – the goalkeeper and his defence lacked communication. The second goal as well – we allowed them to stretch us and then they came through in the middle and they scored. “I think these are the things we will be able to repair in the next game. It is just that it has made our work more difficult, because the next two games are must wins.”
Things in my life went from good to worse in a very short time. My love live, financial problems jealousy, my husband’s family were all against me. Luckily I came across Sonia through a friend. She helped me and showed me my enemies through a mirror for only R200. She did miracles in my life. She told me all my problems without mentioning anything to her. She showed me the people who worked hard to see me suffering some of which were my friends and relatives. She performed a special prayer, washed away my bad luck and cleansed my home. Gave me a love potion with a ring for my financial problems in less than five days, my husband was always by my side and my enemies confessed and asked for forgiveness. Come and visit me at Bayswater.
