Honour for Marogoa Saila presents token of appreciation to soccer mentor

} Sidwell Guduka ONE of the senior citizens of the South African soccer administration, Cappy Marogoa, has been honoured by Troy Saila for his role in the development of the beautiful game. Saila presented a signed Blue Bird FC jersey to Marogoa as a token of honour at an event held at the Boikhuco Old Age Home Hall in Bochabela, Bloemfontein, on Saturday. Marogoa is a former administrator of the now defunct Mangaung-based Blue Bird FC, which was famous back in the 1980’s. Saila, a former professional footballer, plied his trade at the Bloemfontein Young Tigers, Bloemfontein Celtic, Free State Stars and Manning Rangers in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Before he signed his professional contract in 1985, Saila played for Blue Bird FC. “Marogoa is an icon. He has played a pivotal role in the development of soccer in Mangaung. He also helped me develop, not just as a footballer, but as a young person as well,” Saila told Express after the event. “I always had a dream to play in the paid ranks, but without him I don’t think I would have reached my potential. “Marogoa was always there to support and guide me during my playing days. “He has always been a father figure. I’m happy to honour him while he is still alive.” Kennyboy, as Saila is affectionately known in football circles, was a prolific striker during his playing days. He still holds the record for the most goals in a season for Celtic after scoring 20 goals in 1987. An elated Marogoa thanked Saila for honouring him. “Thank you so much for this honour. I feel terribly humbled to receive this signed jersey from you. It means a lot to me and my family. I hope other ex-footballers will take a leaf out of your book,” Marogoa said. The jersey presented to Marogoa was worn by Saila while he played for Blue Bird FC.

Winner drives away with new Spark Campus } Karen Herbert A BEAUTIFUL smile flashed across Vivienne Bojé’s face as her key unlocked the Spark Campus’s door, making her the winner of the snazzy car! Bojé drove all the way from Jeffrey’s Bay and her effort paid off as she walked away with the main prize in Engo’s For Our Children Project. Vivienne and her husband, Kobus, are old Free Staters and said they each bought a ticket for R20 at a Wesselsbron butchery. The fundraising project for the benefit of Engo Free State was presented for the sixth consecutive year last year. By simply making a R20 donation, supporters stood a chance to win a new Spark Campus car. Approximately 20 566 tickets were sold at R20 each Z with a record R411 320 raised. This amount is 6,43% higher than the amount raised last year. With the help of PwC, five finalists were announced on 9 January: Henk Nieuwoudt from Bethlehem, Renate Serfontein from Koppies, Fanie van Eck from Vierfontein, Bojé and Makgotso Ramosito from Rocklands in Bloemfontein. The For Our Children Project would not be possible without the help of sponsors. This year’s sponsors were Imperial GM Bloemfontein, Radio Rosestad and the Volksblad group’s local newspapers.

The other finalists received many consolation prizes, including accommodation and meals at the Greenleaf Guest Lodge; meal vouchers sponsored by Ocean Basket and Braza at the Loch Logan Waterfront, dessert sponsored by Fresko at Loch Logan; gift vouchers from Kloppers, accommodation at the Protea Hotel Bloemfontein Central during

a Super Rugby weekend which also includes Super Rugby suite tickets for the finalists and their partners, and gift vouchers from Head Artistry. This type of fundraising is critical, since state subsidies for welfare organisations are shrinking rapidly. “Every single contribution is like a spark that ignites the flame of caring,” Magda van Niekerk, director: professional services at Engo, says. ) To watch the video, go to www.expressnews.co.za.

Lecture full of insights THE Central University of Technology, Free State, (CUT) recently hosted a public lecture entitled Economic Freedom and Economic Success around the World. The lecture was presented by Prof. Yuri Maltsev, an internationally-acclaimed speaker, who obtained both BA and MA degrees at the Moscow State University and his PhD at the Institute of Labour Research in Moscow, Russia. Maltsev, professor of Economics of the Carthage College in Wisconsin in America, said that levels of economic freedom depended on factors such as government intervention and labour regulations. In his presentation, he demonstrated how economic freedom had helped many successful countries to create prosperity and wealth for their own people. He said that many such economies operated with minimal government intervention, relying on markets to decide what to produce, how to produce and how much to produce. “According to Vasily Grossman, a great Russian

writer imprisoned for his literary work, freedom amounts to having the right to sow what you wish to, making shoes, baking bread with the flour ground from grain you have sown,” Maltsev said. Before defecting to the United States in 1989, he was a chief consultant of the Bank for Foreign Trade and then a member of a senior team of Soviet economists that worked on president Mikhail Gorbachev’s reforms package. He said that economic successes of countries such as Botswana were linked to flexible labour markets found in these countries, limited government regulations and low taxation. Their economic visions have helped these countries to strive toward eliminating poverty, improving health and education of their people, as well as empowering them to make a difference in their own communities and achieve great success. Maltsev was accompanied by 41 American students of the Cartage College. – Central University of Technology, Free State.

Trip to Germany huge adventure } Sidwell Guduka SIX star learners are back home after an adventure of a lifetime. Kelebogile Maleho, Nomsa Qayiso, Katleho Mongale, Mahoko Tshenolo, Rorisang Maselwa and Tshiamo Kgoro, are all German language learners of the Tsoseletso High School in Bloemfontein. They spent four weeks in Germany as the Friends of South Africa (FSA) Youth Exchange. They jetted off to Germany on 10 December 2014 and returned to South Africa on 10 January this year. Maleho (17) and Mongale (17), who are in gr. 12 and gr. 11 respectively, shared their experiences with Express. “The environment and temperatures are different from what we are used to in South Africa. It is extremely hot in Mzansi, while it is colder in Germany,” said Maleho who stayed with a German family in Bremen. “During my stay there I went to the Black Forest to see the snow. I also went horse-riding. I had to live with two corn snakes and a cat as pets. I went to school for about a week before Christmas and a week after Christmas. It was such a great experience,” she said. “It was the first time that I had to spend Christmas away from my parents and abroad, but it was very nice. Christmas in Germany is a family holiday. We woke up early in the morning, had breakfast, opened our presents and then we went to church thereafter,” she

Photo: Sidwell Guduka explained. Mongale, who boarded a flight for the first time in December, said: “We arrived there and got used to the weather quite quickly. We stayed with German families, but we didn’t have trouble understanding each other,” said the young man who stayed with a German family in Bielefeld. “It was really nice boarding the flight for the first time and I enjoyed the trip to Germany and back home. Aiming even higher this year BROUGHT HOME BRONZE: The Grassland Intermediate School’s Kho Kho team represented the Free State at the national schools games in Pretoria in December. The team brought back bronze medals. According to Modise Motlhanke, sports overseer, it was the team’s first experience at the games and the competition was tough. He said they promised to do better this year and also thanked the principal of the school for her continued support. though,” he said. “The food in Germany was pretty nice, but it tasted different from what we are used to here. We ate different kinds of food while we were there,” he added. Elna van Rensburg, German and Afrikaans teacher at Tsoseletso, told Express that as many as 25 learners of her school had visited Germany since 2006. “This trip was a really big experience for them, and they were true ambassadors for our school. We are very proud of

them,” she said. “We had also hosted exchange students from Germany in the past. The German students stayed with African families in the township while they were here, and they enjoyed the experience. We are going to host another group of learners from Germany later this year,” she added. Van Rensburg said Premier Ace Magashule, Deena and Revi Pillay of TAD Consultancy Services, as well as the Protea Hotel Bloemfontein Central, sponsored the

trip for their learners to go abroad last December. “We want to thank them for their continued support,” she concluded. ) Former learners of Tsoseletso High School who studied here between 1989 and 2011 are invited to a meeting to be held at the school on Saturday at 13:00. The gathering is part of preparation for the reunion that is planned for 2 October this year. For more information, contact Tsiane Matong on 051-435-2485.

Concert with Khumalo a treat } Elretha Britz

SIBONGILE KHUMALO

Photo: Volksblad

A SINGER of Sibongile Khumalo’s stature is difficult to beat. This is how the Free State Symphony Orchestra’s (FSSO) promise of “top quality concerts” is being fulfilled in their first production of the year with the exciting Khumalo as soloist in Soul of the Orchestra. A substantial amount of money from the National Lottery has made it possible for these performances to be staged by the best musicians in collaboration with the FSSO throughout the year. Alex Fokkens, artistic director of the FSSO, says among the top musicians that have been invited are pianist Ben Schoeman, conductor Gérard Korsten, organist Ockie Vermeulen and conductor Bernard Gueller. Shortly after the opening concert with Khumalo in the Sand du Plessis Theatre, the FSSO will perform at the Oude Kraal Estate just outside Bloemfontein in the annual picnic concert. Khumalo, who is also known as the queen of Afro jazz, is equally capable in the opera genre, light music and of course jazz.

In this concert she will, however, perform her choice of her favourite opera-arias such as Seguidille from Carmen of Bizet that perfectly suits her supple mezzo voice. She has also included Voi lo sapete, o mama from Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni and two arias from the opera Princess Magogo. Princess Magogo is based on the life of the Inkatha Freedom Party leader, Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s mother, Princess Constance Magogo ka-Dinuzulu (1900-1984), who was an accomplished singer, composer and teacher. Mzilikazi Khumalo composed the opera and Sibongile was the first singer to be cast in the role of the princess. Her last performance in Bloemfontein was in 2007 in the fairly small live performance club of Moods & Flavours in Heidedal. The orchestra opens the concert with the overture of Rossini’s opera La Scala di Seta (The silk ladder) and closes after the break with Elgar’s Enigma variations. Each of the 14 variations is a humouristic character sketch of the composer’s friends.

Three singers have been confirmed for the picnic concert: André Venter, formerly of Romanz, the well-known Thabo Pitse and Riaan Hunter, who completed a course in opera singing with the University of Cape Town after leaving the group Bravo. Songs such as Vincent, When a man loves a Woman, Weeping and Here’s to the Heroes give a good idea of the nature of this open-air concert. Fokkens will be on the conductor’s podium for both concerts. ) Soul of the Orchestra with Sibongile Khumalo: 7 February at 19:30 in the Sand du Plessis Theatre. ) Get your tickets, R130 and R100 for pensioners and groups, at the Pacofs’ booking office in St Andrews’ Street, or call 051-4477772. ) Book for the Oude Kraal picnic concert at Computicket or call Ella Kotze on 051-401-2342. Tickets cost R130 and R70 for learners. ) Theatre enthusiasts that want to secure season tickets for themselves can call Ella Kotze on 051-401-2342 and submit their names.

Several years of unhappiness in my marriage lead to loneliness and continued crying. After hearing testimonials about Professor Kintu on the radio, in newspapers and my old friend's son he had saved from drugs and alcohol abuse, I decided to visit him . For only R200 Professor Kinthu read my fortune accurately and told me about my past life and my marriage. In a dish of water with a mirror he showed me the face of my enemies as well as my husband's girlfriend. He performed a special prayer and gave me powerful love crystals - a special one to use at my workplace and for my business success. Unbelievable! In one week my enemies approached me and confessed bad things they did to us and my husband left his girlfriend and came back to me. Over the years I tried healers and priests but they all failed. THE heart each person carries, is revealed by his words . . . When a man’s heart is filled with good things, his mouth will speak from the good in his heart. When a man’s heart is filled with wrong things, his words will be wrong. A brother said to me he does not eat pork, because pigs are possessed with demons, since Jesus cast out demons from a possessed man, which all ran into pigs . . . but as we

talked, I realised that most of this brother’s words were vulgar. I began to meditate on what really makes us dirty before God. Is it what we eat or what comes out of our mouths? In Matthew 15:10 we hear Jesus saying that what goes into someone’s mouth does not defile him, but what comes out of his mouth, does. Clearly many have defiled themselves without being aware of it. To defile means to make yourself dirty spiritually, simply because of the words you speak. Whatever spirit

you defile yourself with, shall follow you and make you a part of it. As an example, the Bible says let the poor say “I am rich” . . . but if a man keeps confessing poverty, he is defiling himself; poverty will be with him until he realises the power of his words and changes his confession. If you say you are strong in your weakness, God will surely bless you with strength. Mind your words as a child of God. Your words have the power to destroy or to build. ) Visit the New Horizon Ministry at the Joe Solomon Primary School in Heidedal every Sunday from 09:00.

‘I want to try and win this race. I will use the event as part of my preparation for upcom ing races this year. I want to qualify for both the Student Games and the IAAF World Championships in August’ – Dumisane Hlaselo

} Sidwell Guduka DUMISANE HLASELO is on a mission to claim yet another title when he competes in the 10 km Kloppers/Adidas Road Race which will be held in Bloemfontein next month. The Kovsies runner is among the top runners to participate in the event that will start and finish at the Nedbank Bloemfontein Achilles Sport Centre, Att Horak Street, in the Free State capital on 7 February. “I want to try and win this race. Coaching skills boost confidence GALIEL PELUAN, a graduate of the 2014 Carling Black Label Coach the Coaches Programme, is ready to make his mark when Mainstay United take on Ajax Cape Town next month. The sides will GALIEL PELUAN Photo: Muzi Ntombela square off in the Nedbank Cup Last-32 fixture at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington on 22 February. With his recently-obtained Safa Licence-C coaching qualification, Peluan (46) is relishing the prospect of putting his newly-acquired coaching abilities into practice. “It will be my second time participating in the Nedbank Cup Tournament,” Peluan said. “The course has incredibly broadened my coaching abilities to such a point that it has rubbed off onto my players. The task ahead will not be easy, but I believe that my team will show character.” Carling Black Label general manager, Vijay Govindsamy, wished the coach the best of luck in his coaching endeavours. “We are honoured to have played such a role in the coaching development of Peluan. Not only will he and his team benefit from his coaching abilities, but also his broader community.” The Carling Black Label Coach the Coaches has been specifically created to play a pivotal role in the development of coaches at grassroots level. A total of 58 new champion coaches were produced in the coaching programme in partnership with the South African Football Association, with the graduates attaining a Safa C-Level licence. – Thabang Mazibuko, M-Sports Marketing on behalf of Carling Black Label

TESTIMONY

Mr and Mrs Thabo My last resort to bring back my lost lover. Me and my wife Bridget had given up after losing my job and struggling to keep up with my car and house payment. I had to change schools for my children from private schools to government schools because financially we were not stable anymore, but thanks to my in-law who gave me this woman of God's number, she helped me to turn my life around financially by giving me a magic ring which brought back hope into my life. It cost me only R800 and for the first time in my life I went into a casino with my wife and we used our magic to hit a jackpot. Now my house and car are paid off and my children are back in private schools - now life is so wonderful, so in case you are looking for the best healer, please look no more.

THE Central Cricket Franchise board of directors has announced that Chevrolet Knights head coach, Sarel Cilliers’s, contract has been extended for another two years. It is a significant vote of confidence from the Central Cricket Franchise, whose leading officials are clearly grateful for Cilliers’s input to the team. The 43-year-old guided the Free State side to the Ram Slam T20 Challenge final last year. His troops, however, lost the match to the Nashua Cape Cobras by three runs. According to the press statement released by the Central Cricket Franchise last Wednesday, Knights captain, Werner Coetsee, was part of the panel that interviewed Cilliers and three other candidates. This initiative paid off greatly as wonderful contributions and insights were provided by the

captain who had mandate from the rest of the players. “The panel is pleased to announce that Sarel Cilliers has been re-appointed unanimously to the position as head coach of the Central Cricket Franchise. “The board of the franchise has also supported this appointment and is very pleased to have Sarel as the coach for the next two years and hopefully he will secure more trophies for the franchise,” the statement reads. It has been decided that Cilliers, in consultation with the Central Cricket Franchise board, will lead the process to appoint his support staff. He will also take care of the team when they go to India to compete in the Champions League. In the previous outing he managed to finish in the top eight. “Hopefully this time around, the team will do even better. The board wishes Sarel and the team all the best for the rest of the

PAULINA NJEYA has proven to be the Free State’s queen of road-running after winning two 10 km races in three days. The 37-year-old athlete, who runs in the colours of the star-studded Nedbank Central Gauteng Club, clocked 37:33 to win the Bloemfontein Striders 10 km Night Race in Langenhovenpark, Bloemfontein, on Thursday. She went on to win the Martie du Plessis School 10 km Road Race in the City of Roses on Saturday. She broke the tape in 37:46 to secure another victory. “I’m very impressed with my performance so far this year. I’m not happy about my time, though. I actually want to finish a 10 km race in less than 36 minutes,” Njeya told Express. “I have been working on improving my stamina in the past few weeks. Now I’ve got to work hard on improving my speed.” She is a strong bet to easily

walk away with the women’s crown at the yearly Kloppers/ Adidas 42 km Marathon to be held in Bloemfontein on 7 February. “I began preparing for this event on Monday. I believe I can also win it. I have created space in my cabinet for yet another title next month.” Khothatso Mokone, a member of the Kovsies Runners Club, won the men’s category of the Bloemfontein Striders Night Race after crossing the finish line in 31:18. “This was my first race of the year and I’m happy I won it. But I still have to work hard to improve my time. I had planned to finish the race in 30 minutes or less than that time, but that was not to be,” said Mokone. The Phelindaba runner said he had been training hard since December in preparation for the 12 km cross-country trials to be held in Kagiso, Johannesburg, on 31 January. ) For more stories, visit www.express-news.co.za.

season. We are looking forward to the contributions from all for the new season,” the statement read.

Things in my life went from good to worse in a very short time. My love live, financial problems jealousy, my husband’s family were all against me. Luckily I came across Sonia through a friend. She helped me and showed me my enemies through a mirror for only R200. She did miracles in my life. She told me all my problems without mentioning anything to her. She showed me the people who worked hard to see me suffering some of which were my friends and relatives. She performed a special prayer, washed away my bad luck and cleansed my home. Gave me a love potion with a ring for my financial problems in less than five days, my husband was always by my side and my enemies confessed and asked for forgiveness. Come and visit me at Bayswater.
