‘You’re still my Valentine’ Couple just as in love after 15 years of marriage
} Sidwell Guduka THIS couple celebrates Valentine’s Day every year to show how much they love each other. And this year will be no exception for the Bloemanda couple. Papi and Mantshadi Moye, who have been married for 15 years, will dress up and go out to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Saturday (14/02). As a Valentine’s Day gift to his businesswoman wife, Papi is planning a romantic weekend at the Villa Manor Guest House in Bloemfontein. But, on the other hand, Mantshadi is planning that they should stay in and cook themselves a fancy dinner in their pyjamas. “I really want to treat my wife to a cosy night with a low-key dinner and shower her with gifts. She is my angel and I always spoil her. I have asked her to cancel all her plans for the day,” Papi told Express. “We celebrate Valentine’s Day every other year. “Even before we got married we used to celebrate it, so we will continue to celebrate it until death do us part. “We want to make this one very special because we are also celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary next month,” he said. “I love this woman to bits. She is peaceful, respectful, honest and very supportive. She has been supporting me through thick and thin. “I thank God for blessing me with such a wonderful woman,” he added. To reciprocate her husband’s gesture, Mantshadi said she

Holy cow! I am worth what? V Oteng Mpete “MY lobola was R1 200 in 1987. I was the most expensive bride your father’s village had ever seen, because I was beautiful with long flowing hair and red nails,” says my mother beaming with pride. The women of Masaleng in Qwaqwa never stood a chance against my mother’s beauty and her Tswana heritage. Now, 28 years later, according to the controversial “Lobola Calculator” app for smartphones, my lobola would be a whopping R78 000. A series of questions are used to calculate one’s worth. What is your highest qualification? How much do you weigh? (Because your worth is closely determined by how many vetkoek you had last week.) How attractive are you? To which the app’s creators crassly ask the quiz-taker to be “honest” on a scale that ranges from not at all, average and really hot. Not for the faint-hearted When Nxobile Khubeka, a stay-at-home mom, met her husband in 2012, she was only 17 years old. The following year he proposed and married her. Six months later, they were blessed with a baby girl. “My lobola was R60 000. I was barely out of high school when my husband married me. “I hear a lot of whispers about my lobola; that it was too much money for an unaccomplished woman. “But I have never really paid attention to gossip,” says Khubeka. “I am not hurt by the gossip, I believe that people are just jealous, that my husband could afford to splurge on lobola and an extravagant wedding,” she says. Lobola, which is loosely translated to bride price, is meant to be a symbolic expression of gratitude from a man to a woman. The groom shows his gratitude to the bride’s family by paying them a “reasonable” amount of money. Lobola acts as the binding of the couple’s marriage because it joins two families.

KHULUBUSE ZUMA, mining millionaire and former taxi boss paid R600 000 which is 100 cows worth, of lobola for his Swati bride, Fikisiwe-Dlamini. Photo: SundaySun “It is founded on two beliefs. First, that lobola is never finished nor paid in full. A man is forever indebted to his wife’s family for raising a wife for him and the mother of his children,” says Lesley Mofokeng, City Press columnist and writer. “Second, it is to say that this precious woman’s value cannot be put into monetary terms. A more romantic man would say: ‘This is how far my money can stretch. It’s not enough to afford you, for I’m the lucky one to have you agree to spend the rest of your life with me’.” “Everybody is doing it all wrong. The way lobola is practised nowadays is blatant exploitation of men. “I wouldn’t mind if my partner would lobola me with just one cow. There should not be a monetary amount attached to lobola,” says Ntando Mbata, heritage specialist and writer. “It isn’t about the amount of money or number of cows one can give, but rather about the bloodshed that connects two families’ ancestors.” With South Africa’s divorce rate increasing drastically each year, most black couples need to bear in mind that lobola money is non-refundable. Selloane Khalane, journalist and mother of two, is currently going through an amicable divorce with her husband. She is grateful for the life they spent together and the home she had built with him. “My father didn’t want their lobola money; he didn’t believe that it was practical. He always emphasised that the best thing that must come out of the lobola process is that my husband treats me like a queen,” she says. “My lobola was just over R20 000, because I was independent, charismatic and hard-working. “I could drive a car and I was studying
FANIE FOURIE’S LOBOLA was a movie that depicted love between a Zulu woman and an Afrikaans man and the woes that came with negotiating lobola. Photo: Channel24 at a university. “Although we’re not together anymore, my husband would never ask for his lobola back. It is an insult to do so. “The money paid out during the lobola process is a small part of what lobola truly signifies.” Why women do it Today, more and more women in South Africa are accomplished professionals. These women drive expensive cars, pay their own rent and buy property. “I would never be able to afford to pay lobola, I am an artisan and my girlfriend is a dentist,” says Musa Mchunu (27). “I want to marry her, but I know that I will never be able to afford to please her family.” Nevertheless, women with the financial means to do so, are considering paying their own lobola. Lolola is now a trending topic The uproar caused by the “Lobola Calcula-
tor” on Twitter and Facebook is proof that the algorithms used to measure the value of the woman are flawed. “I knew this app would end up being a way of making fun of our tradition, but I’m probably being oversensitive,” tweeted Mayihlome Tshwete, spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs and the son of ANC stalwart Steve Tshwete who died in 2002. Atlegang Moshugi thought it was ridiculous. “Relax, it’s not like your uncles are going to use the app during your negotiations,” tweeted Moshugi Sihle Ntsaluba tweeted: “What is the weighing based on? Does nobody feel that this app ridicules the true meaning behind what lobola stands for?” People like to hide behind the name of culture and do things that are logically insensible and say “it’s my culture”. All one can hope for, as a future participant of the lobola process, is that sensibility be practised by both families.

No sign of missing man after five weeks } Sidwell Guduka JOSEPH MOJAKI is worried sick. Mojaki from Phahameng, Bloemfontein, says he is dumbfounded by the sudden disappearance of his brother Steven Dhlabu. He was last seen on Saturday, 10 January. The 51-year-old Dhlabu was reported as a missing person at the Mangaung Police Station after he had failed to return home that particular day. According to Mojaki, Dhlabu has a mental problem and he normally calls himself by the name of Jeff.
“We haven’t seen him since that day; it has been almost five weeks now. We don’t know his whereabouts. We are really worried and can’t sleep at night,” Mojaki told Express. “We have searched for him everywhere without any luck. Even our neighbours tried to help us to locate him, but our efforts were fruitless. We appeal to anyone who might have seen Jeff to notify us or the nearest police station,” he added. Dhlabu was last seen wearing a maroon shirt, brown trousers and black sneakers. Joseph can be contacted on 078-299-1826.

Proteas looking for good start
FS police now on Facebook } Sidwell Guduka THE Free State police have opened their first official Facebook account: Free State SAPS. Butana Komphela, MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, officially launched the provincial police’s Facebook account in Bloemfontein on Thursday (05/02). The MEC said using Facebook would help the police force to engage more directly with the public. “I like social media. It’s a great tool to use and people can use it to report any criminal activities on our Facebook page,” Komphela said. “We really see Facebook as the key to better communication, because many people carry cellular phones.” “This social media platform will not in any way replace the existing forms of crime reporting such as SMS messages and our crime-stop hotline, 10111. “We are just complementing what we already have. People can still continue to use 10111 to report criminal activities,” he explained. Komphela also appealed to community members to report only accurate information on the Facebook account. “As much as we encourage the community to use this social media platform to communicate with us, we would like to urge people to please refrain from giving us misleading information,” he said. “We are determined to fight crime as if it is a war. FOCUS ON DELANO VIEW
Living at its stylish best BY now the name Delano View should be well-known to you and synonymous with luxurious and futuristic living. And whether or not you know where it is situated, it cannot be over-emphasized that the northern part of Bloemfontein is a booming property development area. Lilyvale needs no introduction, but it is necessary to accentuate the beauty that surrounds the area. The Botanical gardens is a stone’s throw away from Lilyvale, so you can only imagine the garden-like surroundings in and around the area. The buyers and investors at Delano View are roaring with excitement about their stunning and spacious houses and are waiting in great anticipation to meet you, their new neighbour. So many factors should be taken into consideration when you purchase a house, for instance your lifestyle , activities, proximity of schools, safety, resale value, how you will commute to work and obviously social status. Never underestimate the power of an exclusive neighbourhood when it comes to buying a house. Apart from the pleasure of living among the rich and famous, residents can revel in the fact that they are just a stone’s throw away from the Botanical Gardens, Preller Square and Northridge Mall. 10 Tips for buying your first home Buying your first home is both an exciting and a stressful experience. The joy of owning your own home can sometimes be overshadowed by the concerns that come with acquiring the associated debt. Rhys Dyer, CEO of ooba, South Africa's biggest bond originator, has these ten tips to take the pain out of the process:
1. Save up for a deposit. This is one of the most important things you can do to help yourself obtain a bond at a good rate. The more money you put in at the beginning, the less you will owe and the more inclined a bank will be to take a risk on you.
For all your property and tender adverts
2. Be certain of what you can afford. The amount of credit the bank will give you depends on how much you earn, your expenses and the leftover disposable income you have to service the debt. Most banking and bond originator websites have a home loan calculator which will work out how much you can afford. Use these and then limit your searches to properties in the recommended price range. 3. Get prequalified. If you get prequalified for mortgage finance, you'll know what you can afford, and you'll be in a stronger position to make an offer when you find the perfect home. ooba's prequalification service oobaqualified - takes this a step further, and helps you to work on your affordability and credit rating if you fall short of the banks' requirements. 4. Seek professional advice. Listen to your friends and family, but also seek the help of a reputable bond originator, who are experts in home finance and bond applications, and will give you free, impartial advice. 5. Shop around for your home. Spend some time educating yourself about what's available in the market. Don't buy in haste, without considering the alternatives. When you have a sense of what's out there, you'll be able to make better decisions as an informed buyer.
Kindly call Lydia Mathobela on 051 404 7838 or email her at lydia.mpofu@volksblad.com Deadline for booking and payment is Friday before 12:00
6. Shop around for a bond. Don't just snap up the first bond offer you receive from the first bank you apply to. Another bank might offer you a better deal. A reputable bond originator will apply to multiple banks for your home loan simultaneously, ensuring that you get the best deal at no extra cost to you, with less hassle and paperwork. 7. Understand all the costs involved upfront, like levies and transfers fees. If you haven't prepared for these, you could be in for a nasty surprise. 8. Be aware of the hidden costs and defects of any property. Look out for anything that is not working properly, from faulty wiring to subsiding walls. If you want to make an offer, bring in a specialist to inspect plumbing, electrics and structure, with particular attention to the roof. If he uncovers something, it doesn't necessarily mean you won't buy the property, but it puts you in a position to negotiate on the price. 9. Repay as much as you can into your bond every month. By just putting in a few extra hundredRand a month you can save yourself thousands over a 20-year bond term. 10. Know the difference between occupation and possession. It is not your house until the transfer is registered at the Deeds Office. If you spend money on alterations before this happens, you could lose all the money you spent if the transfer doesn't go through. Source: Property 24 10TIPS-EX110215

Grey welcomes sponsor
} Sidwell Guduka GREY COLLEGE has announced the leading insurance company 1Life as its title jersey sponsor ahead of the 2015 rugby season. The official sponsorship was revealed at a press conference at Grey College Pavillion in Bloemfontein on Friday, 6 February. Kobus Wentzel, general manager of sales and distribution at 1Life, told Express after the media briefing that his company was pleased to be associated with a winning culture. “We are really proud and honoured to partner with such a top school like Grey College. They are a great rugby school and we are very excited to be part of the Grey history,” Wentzel said. “From 1Life’s perspective, we see this as a great opportunity as we
want to grow our brand in the Free State region. We believe our partnership with Grey College is definitely in line with our specific vision and future X which is changing lives,” he said. “We have signed this deal with an option to renew it after three years. But we cannot disclose the total value of the sponsorship at this point in time.” As part of the union between the two parties, 1Life will donate R1 500 for every try that Grey will score this year. “At 1Life we have a financial literacy course called The Truth About Money. The whole idea about this course is to educate all South Africans in terms of how to better budget and structure their finances. So that money will be donated to that noble project,” Wentzel ex-
plained. Deon Scheepers, headmaster of Grey College, was pleased to welcome 1Life on board. “I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the 1Life team to the Grey College family. We look forward to working with you for the next three years.” Grey College has produced 44 Springboks to date, the most Springboks since South Africa was re-admitted to international rugby in 1992. The school’s rugby first team has lost only seven times in the team’s last 132 matches. The Grey College rugby team is also sponsored by Vodacom, Sovereign BMW, Canterbury, Adidas and Powerade. ) For more stories, visit www.express-news.co.za

Defending democracy } Jabulani Dlamini TODAY (11/02) and Thursday are very important days in South Africa. It was of course on 11 February in 1990 that the late former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, was released from prison and immediately set the then volatile country on a path to freedom and democracy. Fast-forward a quarter of a century to the day and Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s “Rainbow Nation” stands on the brink of one of its biggest potential milestones apart from 27 April 1994. On Thursday evening (12/02), Pres. Jacob Zuma is set to deliver the country’s 21st democratic State of the Nation (Sona) address and, like no other, this coming of age occasion is eagerly awaited. With the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) having vowed to make sure they ask Zuma when he intends to pay back the money wrongfully spent on non-security upgrades at his Nkandla residence while he delivers the Sona address, everyone is waiting to see the outcome of this sideshow. Despite concerted attempts, the ruling ANC has failed in ensuring the EFF does not, by law, ask the president questions while he delivers the Sona. This has paved the way for a potentially explosive showdown in the National Assembly. With load-shedding now a daily reality, unemployment still skyhigh in the country (and the Free State in particular), crime and the scourge of inequality continuing to widen, more than anything South Africans are looking for answers from the number one citizen. Zuma will deliver the State of the Nation address on Thursday at 19:00.

Naka hopeful ahead of opener } Sidwell Guduka THE Toyota Cheetahs coach, Naka Drotské, is excited ahead of his side’s Vodacom Super Rugby opener against the Cell C Sharks this weekend, but is expecting a tough battle. Kick-off at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban is scheduled for 17:05 on Saturday 14/02). Despite the fact that the Cheetahs have lost two of their three warm-up matches against the Vodacom Bulls and the DHL Stormers, Drotské is optimistic that his team will give a stupendous performance against the Durbanites. “People must not read too much into our friendly results. They are going to see a different team when we take on the Sharks this weekend,” warned Drotské. “We tried a lot of combinations when we played two away warm-up games. We also didn’t play our best team against those sides. We had guys who were out nursing minor injuries, so we didn’t want to risk them,” he said. “We are ready for the Sharks. They are a difficult side to beat in their own backyard, but we are determined to collect our full sets of points for the new season against them. The Cheetahs redeemed themselves when they defeated the Griffons in an entertaining friendly at the Old Greys Sports Grounds in Bloemfontein last Wednesday (04/02). “We have been working hard from mid-November last year and had a good break over December. I’m happy with the fitness level of the players. We are ready for the new season,” he added. Asked how far he would want the Cheetahs to progress in this year’s Super Rugby, Drotské said he would be happy to make it to the play-offs. “We want to qualify for the play-offs, but winning the tournament would be the cherry on top. We have assembled a strong team for this competition,” said the coach.

Mr and Mrs Thabo My last resort to bring back my lost lover. Me and my wife Bridget had given up after losing my job and struggling to keep up with my car and house payment. I had to change schools for my children from private schools to government schools because financially we were not stable anymore, but thanks to my in-law who gave me this woman of God's number, she helped me to turn my life around financially by giving me a magic ring which brought back hope into my life. It cost me only R800 and for the first time in my life I went into a casino with my wife and we used our magic to hit a jackpot. Now my house and car are paid off and my children are back in private schools - now life is so wonderful, so in case you are looking for the best healer, please look no more.

My husband is back after 15 years of divorce. Mama Asiha showed me my enemies in a mirror. But now we are together again and very happy. I almost lost hope when my husband asked for a divorce. Living without my husband for 15 years was not easy. I had to support myself financially and consulted top healers, who didn't help. I heard of mama Asiha on the radio and on television, my workmate he had helped with my financial problems. She told me everything that was happening in my life before I said anything to her. She took out all the witchcraft, showed me the 'mirror in a dish of water'. I saw my husband's girlfriend . She prayed for me with her special powers . My enemies confessed now and I'm also now promoted at work . I don't know how to thank mama Asiha, but to make it public. With her magic ring she can protect homes from bad evils.

Celtic take on Chiefs } Sidwell Guduka THE Free State Stadium will be no place for the faint-hearted when Bloemfontein Celtic square off with Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday, 11 February. Kick-off is at 19:30. This will be the first match for both sides since December last year due to the recently-ended Afcon tournament that was hosted by Equatorial Guinea. Erick “Tower” Mathoho hopes Chiefs will start the second round of the season from where they left off before the Christmas break. The Glamour Boys, who are the only unbeaten team in the PSL after 18 matches, are sitting on the summit of the log after collecting 46 points. “It is always a big game travelling to Celtic,” Mathoho told kaizerchiefs.com. “Celtic is not a so-called small team. They have the backing of their passionate supporters,” he said. Mathoho was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that represented South Africa at the Afcon tournament. He arrived back in the country last week. “I am fresh and looking forward to combine well with my teammates to continue where we left off before the break,” said the former Celtic man. Though Amakhosi are enjoying a 15-point lead at the top of the log, Mathoho believes it is still a long way before the Absa Premiership title will be decided. “It is still a long way to go to the last game. “We take each game as it comes. Celtic will look at breaking our momentum, but they will find us ready to defend our pride and the badge,” Mathoho said.

After 10 years of struggling, my husband is back at home after mama Linda showed me my enemies in a mirror . We are now a happy, married couple - thank you, mama Linda. My husband stayed with his girlfriend for 10 years. Without him I struggled to support myself and could not even pay our children's school fees. I visited traditional healers, but with no help. Then I heard of Maria Linda on a radio talk show and my neighbour whom he helped and rescued from black magic. I visited mama Linda and paid R200. He told me about my future and my marriage problems. He put a mirror in a dish with water and I saw the faces of my enemies and my husband's girlfriend. He prayed for me and gave me holy water and oil to wash myself. After two days I saw results, my enemies confessed their wrong doings towards me and my husband left his girlfriend and come back home. I'm now happy after visiting mama Linda .
