Mzansi loses soccer star Shot dead by robbers at girlfriend’s house

} Sidwell Guduka THE South African soccer fraternity was left dumbfounded when they heard about the untimely death of Senzo Meyiwa. Meyiwa (27), the Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalminder, was fatally shot when two thugs entered Kelly Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus, East Rand, on Sunday night. It is reported that the two robbers demanded cellphones, money and valuables before Meyiwa was shot in the back, trying to protect Khumalo – because one of the men allegedly had a gun pointed at her. A third man waited outside the house and all three fled immediately after the shooting. “This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it – to Senzo’s family, to his extended family, to Orlando Pirates and to the nation,” Dr Irvin Khoza, Orlando Pirates chairman, commented. Dr Danny Jordaan, Safa president, meanwhile, said he was shocked and devastated by the tragic death of Meyiwa. “He was an integral part of the revolution of our beloved national team under Shakes Mashaba. For him to leave us like this is shocking. “As an association we had expected so much from him, the nation had pinned their hopes on him following brilliant displays in the Bafana Bafana jersey, more so in the recent Afcon matches where he kept a clean sheet in all four games. We will surely miss him,” Jordaan said. “At this time our thoughts are with his family, his club Orlando Pirates, the football family in general. Shakes Mashaba was going to announce his squad to face Sudan and Nigeria tomorrow, and I would like to believe Senzo’s name would have been the first, because he has been a pillar of strength Bafana Bafana in the recent matches, making incredible saves to keep the team in the match. May his soul rest in peace,” Jordaan added. Meyiwa was born in Umlazi outside Durban. He joined Orlando Pirates in 2002, but only made his professional debut in 2005. At the time of his untimely death, he had represented the Sea Robbers 73 times. He played his last match for the Soweto giants when his club defeated Ajax Cape Town 4-1 in the Telkom Knockout on Saturday, just a day before he was killed. Meyiwa was nearing the peak of his career and he had recently captained

Meyiwa, who was born in KwaZulu-Natal was never far from the headlines – for the wrong reasons. Tales of abondoning his wife, Mandisa, to go and stay with Khumalo did the rounds with some going as far as describing Khumalo as a “homewrecker”, but the shot-stopper later went back to his

wife who forgave him for having an affair with the Afro-pop singer. Khumalo has a child with Meyiwa, and she also shares a child with hip-hop singer Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye. Maarohanye was found guilty of murder for killing four schoolboys while dragracing down a Soweto street while high on drugs. This was later converted to culpable homicide.

New game reserve to create jobs } Boipelo Mere IT is a yes to the expansion of the Goegap Nature Reserve with an additional 4 900 ha and the establishment of a new provincial nature reserve at Gamsberg at 12 500 ha in Springbok. The expansion of the Goegap Nature Reserve and the establishment of the new provincial nature reserve at Gamsberg is expected to most certainly create a couple of jobs in the province. That is after the Northern Cape MEC for Environment and Nature Conservation, Tiny Chotelo, sealed the first

biodiversity offset agreements between Koeris Wind and Mainstream Kangnas as well as Black Mountain Mine (BMM) and the Northern Cape Department of Environment and Nature Conservation to ensure the protection of biodiversity sites. Signing the agreements in Springbok last week, Chotelo explained that the purpose of a biodiversity offset was to ensure an equivalent or better biodiversity outcome to the sites where biodiversity values might be lost due to impacts that might be caused by developmental projects, to improve the long-term protection and

viability of the biodiversity and its associated habitats, and to ensure that the developed site was ecologically sustainable. Expressing her pride in signing this first agreement for the province, the MEC elaborated that offsets were increasingly being used as a tool to ensure that development was ecologically sustainable and the negative impacts were avoided, minimised or remedied. “This is mainly due to the growing concerns about loss of biodiversity across the country and in particular our province. “We are therefore compelled to introduce urgent mechanisms to safeguard species, ecosystems and landscapes. “A consistent approach to, and clarity on how to make use of, biodiversity offsets is therefore required to avoid the risk of inappropriate biodiversity offsets or no offsets being used at all. “It gives me great pleasure that these offsets we have signed are indeed very appropriate for this area. “I am also happy that these agreements, have corrected the myth that conservation is opposed to development and job crea-

tion,” added Chotelo. The MEC maintains that it is the role of her department to facilitate and coordinate the biodiversity offset processes within the sustainability context as well as advancing the constitutional mandate of the department in line with the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy of having 6,5% of all provincial land conserved and protected. She said that the finalisation of the biodiversity offsets between the stakeholders promised not only to ensure biodiversity protection, but also to grow the current percentage of the conservation estate from 4,58% to 6,5%. According to the MEC, both the Goegap and Gamsberg reserves will contribute to the increase in percentage on the current conservation estate in line with the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy of having 6,5% of all provincial land under conservation. “Of course the journey to marry the interests of environment, heritage and development was not necessarily smooth, but had to be travelled,” emphasised Chotelo in conclusion.

Brothers want to work barren land

ACRES and acres of land lying barren in different schoolyards, churches and many institutions in Kimberley have become an object of envy to two Zimbabwean brothers now based in Kimberley. One of the brothers, Donald Mukobvu, is a holticulturalist and to him it is bad to have land and not use it productively with his brother Themba Njopera. Hence the two brothers approached the management at the Galeshewe-based St Boniface School to use the unused land just behind the school. The result turned out to be a head-turner to motorists and households in the neighbourhood. Incidentally, this month the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development in the Northern Cape has marked World Food Day in Kuruman in pursuit of the same idea that the brothers are pursuing in Kimberley. “To us Kimberley is still full of diamonds and those diamonds are the available land at schools and churches that is standing unused. If all communities in the schools and neighbourhoods would be allowed to plant vegetables and sell them the chances are that the vegetables would be cheap and fresh,” says Donald. The brothers say at the beginning they dreamt that by now their project would have expanded to other areas, but due to unforeseen circumstances they still find themselves glued to the St Boniface garden as they attempt to fashion out efficient ways to remove weeds and cobwebs. According to the brothers, the garden has attracted the interest of unemployed youth, churches and government officials. A broken man “But the interest does not seem to translate into action. Many have promised us heaven as we already have earth, but all promises turn to nothing.” They also accuse one of the provincial

According to Donald, the official in question, whose name Express Northern Cape has in its possession, bragged to the delegation about how his department had been funding the project after learning that he (Donald) was out of town. “My concern is that the department found us having already distributed to supermarkets and selling fresh vegetables to locals in an effort of marketing ourselves. When they got here we poured our hearts out regarding our needs. That is when they promised us Jojo tanks after we told them about our water challenges.” Apart form the promises about the Jojos, the brothers regard the official’s worst betrayal as the one when he instructed them to harvest a “mountain” of spinach and

promised to pay for it and to send transport to collect it on the day. “The vegetables ended up rotting in the sun. I felt terrible because we could have rather donated it to the homes or crèches.” The next edition of Express Northern Cape will contain a response from the department in question accused of trespassing.

Sport unites community, mine ANGLO AMERICAN, Kumba Iron Ore’s Kolomela Mine, is proud to associate itself with sport in the Tsantsabane Municipal District. Sport creates a natural partnership between the Kolomela Mine and the local community. For this reason the Kolomela Mine has donated sports equipment to various soccer clubs in the area. “Sport is a powerful vehicle that does

not only unite people, but also develops discipline, confidence, cooperation, respect and leadership skills among sportsmen. “It teaches them how to manage victory as well as defeat,” said George Benjamin, manager of public affairs at the Kolomela Mine. “My vision is to uphold the legacy of sport in the Boichoko area in order to get the youth involved in physical activities

and to eliminate drug and alcohol abuse within our community. “I also have the need to bring back physical activities for people working at the mines, because they tend to quit once they have obtained a full-time job,” said Karabo Mokanyane, team manager of Boichoko Puma United. Boichoko Puma United belongs to the Tsantsabane Local Football Association (Tsalfa) League.

Hendrick Saulous, the Rasta Far Eagles team manager, said: “My vision for the club is to develop youngsters in football in order to expose them to professional football whilst influencing their lives positively. “We are the current champions of the West-stream District,” he added. This club also belongs to the Tsalfa League and was established in 1991. It has 35 members.

Each of the remaining seven finalists donated 150 kg of boerewors to a school of their choice. THE exuberance that was evident in the property market a year ago is coming to an end, and home sellers in most parts of South Africa now need to moderate their price expectations accordingly. “Sellers need to calm down and price their properties fairly in order to achieve a sale, bearing in mind that further interest rate rises are anticipated.” That’s the advice of Lew Geffen, chairman of Sotheby’s International Realty in South Africa, who says although summer is here and the prime home-buying season is picking up momentum, the heat has gone out of the market in the past few months and the rate of price growth is slowing down. “Since 2012, when the market really began to turn after the 2008 and 2009 recession, we have seen the average home sale price in our group rise by around 26%, and at this level we are seeing indications of buyer resistance in most of the country except Cape Town where demand is still very high.” Geffen says he is aware that his point of view may be at odds with what some other high-profile commentators may be saying about the state of the real estate market, but the fact is that there has been a weakening of consumer sentiment this year. “And at the same time the banks are still extremely

‘It is encouraging to see a football da tabase tracking and documenting the performances of clubs on the Af rican continent.’ Kaizer Motaung

Chiefs in top 6 in Africa } Sidwell Guduka KAIZER MOTAUNG, chairman of Kaizer Chiefs, has expressed his delight with the progress made by his club this season. Amakhosi have moved into the top six of the Africa Football/Soccer Clubs rankings after having accumulated 1 561 points during the current cycle. The recent rankings were released on 19 October. The Soweto giants are the only team in the country who occupy a spot in the top ten, followed by Mamelodi Sundowns who are placed 12th having accumulated 1 511 points. “It is encouraging to see a football database tracking and documenting the performances of clubs on the African continent,” Motaung told kaizerchiefs.com. “So going forward one can compare our standard with other countries as well. The ranking also shows the great start our club had to the start of the PSL season,” said the chairman. Chiefs have had a great start to the current PSL season. They are currently sitting at the top of the log after collecting 25 points in nine matches and they remain the only team in the league that is yet to lose a match this season. “Looking back, the start to this season reminds me of 1984 when Kaizer Chiefs also had a fantastic season, winning four titles, including the league. “However, that was back in the days of the NPSL. In that season Joe Frickleton, a Scotsman, was our coach. “An interesting coincidence is that our present coach, Stuart Baxter, is also a Scotsman,” he added. However, Motaung has warned his players not to get carried away by their current league standing. “It is still early days. “A season is not a sprint, it is a marathon.” he warned. Orlando Pirates, who had won the CAF Champions League in 1995 and were the runners-up in the African Champions League last season, occupy the 20th spot on the continent with 1 472 points. In the top 100 bracket there are other local teams such as Bidvest Wits (38th,
