Primary learners at risk Outreach addresses gangsterism in Galeshewe

} Boipelo Mere LEARNERS of the Molehabangwe Primary School in Galeshewe were given a lecture on gangsterism by a delegation consisting of members of the Kagisho Police Station, the Office of the Premier of the Northern Cape and the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Lesedi. They were discouraged from taking part in gang-related activities during the NGO’s recent outreach programme at the school. During the visit it became apparent that children at primary school level already become involved in gang-related activities. The violent behaviour of these learners are of great concern to the principal of the school, Tira Phillips, and teachers alike. According to Faith Nyathi, the founder of Lesedi, it is not only high schools that have reported an increase in violent behaviour amongst learners, but also primary schools. According to her, at least five schools in Galeshewe, including two primary schools, have reported an increase in violence amongst their learners. She highlighted that they needed community support to create awareness and educate learners about the dangers of gangsterism. “We are very pleased that some of the schools are meeting us halfway in our plea to work hand in hand by allowing us to have talks with the children during the exams,” Nyathi said. Phillips pointed out that intervention measures at an early stage were important, because the children often copied bad behaviour from their older siblings. In response to the question whether there were any gang-related behaviour at the school, Phillips said it was minor because the children behaved when they were under supervision. But due to the fact that children come from different backgrounds, local nurses or police members would sometimes notice that some of the children tried to emulate their older siblings, resorting to bad behaviour. “One will never know what they think, because some suffer abuse at home. “And we will never know what happens to them on their way between

school and home. But we do address these issues in class and during assembly,” said the principal. Bonnie Scott from the Office of the Premier encouraged the learners to enjoy their youth. “Do not copy the bad things the older

Help comes to families after storm } Boipelo Mere THE Northern Cape MEC for Health, Mac Jack, on behalf of the provincial government, visited Petrusville in the Pixley Ka Seme District as part of government’s intervention to assist households affected by the catastrophe caused by the storm last week. The municipal disaster management report indicated that more than 34 houses had been damaged by a heavy storm on the night of 3 November. The storm left approximately 120 people consisting of parents and children homeless and destitute. During the visit, the MEC was accompanied by the Renosterberg mayor, Zet Kwinana, the municipal manager, councillors, as well as departmental officials from all spheres of government, to meet with all destitute families at their homes to offer them food parcels and blankets to escape the cold weather. A partnership between the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), the Department of Social Development, Renosterberg Municipality and the Department of Health also ensured that people were given blankets and food parcels, as well as other necessities. The MEC in his address to the community comforted affected families on the losses caused by the storm and urged them not to lose hope. “Your pain is our pain; your loss is our loss as government. “Please do not despair and lose hope, we will do everything in our power to normalise the situation. We remain accountable to you at all times, as we are a government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Sylvia Lucas, the Northern Cape premier, paid a follow-up visit to assess the damage and the immediate aid that had

She said that the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs had done an assessment of the damage and would be applying for relief from the disaster fund to provide housing to those worst affected by the storm. For Ouma Ida Afrika, who is in her 80’s, the aid from government and the contrac-

tor came as a great relief because now she could move back into her revamped house only days after the storm had struck. “Whenever something like this happens, people need to feel that they have a government that cares, one that they can turn to. Lucas. She expressed her gratitude to the government departments and private people who came to the aid of these distressed families. She especially applauded the two contractors who were doing repairs to some of the houses from their own pockets and encouraged other entrepreneurs to follow suit and to pledge their support towards the families.

Old-age homes receive donation } Boipelo Mere THE Baga-Thaganyane Tribal Office in Cassel came abuzz on 3 November when the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) Developmental Trust united seven old-age homes within the Joe Morolong Local Municipality. The senior citizens of old-age homes from remote areas, which included Camden, Pietershem, Bothithong, Glenred, Cassel, Danoon and Batlharos, were transported to the venue to witness the good deed of the trust. The trust awarded each home an amount of R10 000, which will help sustain the homes. Tumelo Mpolokeng, the CEO of the trust, handed over a cheque of R70 000, which he said was to be shared equally amongst the homes. Mpolokeng highlighted the important role that the elders had played towards the achievement of today’s democracy. “Senior Citizens play a critical role in every community and it is for this reason that we have brought them here to show them how special they are, despite them being old. They are our parents and our grandparents, people who have contributed to the history of our communities and our families in so many ways, including our well-being,” he said. Badisa Legodi Moncho (82), founder of Thusanang Bagodi Care Centre in Bothitong, said: “We, the senior citizens of this district, have taken it upon ourselves to participate in many of activities to keep ourselves young. This donation from the JTG Trust will go a long way in ensuring that we keep on sustaining ourselves through sports activities that we normally partake in and also make sure that we look good. “As a community-based development organisation, the JTG Trust sees it increasingly important to recognise the importance of supporting senior citizens in different communities within our municipal area in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District.”

‘There is life after +positive diagnosis’ } Mpho Gift Lekgetho MPHO LEKGETHO, an HIV positive mother of two, wants to share her story with Express Northern Cape readers, especially with World Aids Day approaching. The article is also aimed at motivating those who have just realised that finding out you are HIV positive is not a death sentence. “MY life became very interesting after I had tested positive for HIV. I must admit living with HIV in 2013 is not the same as 15 years ago,” says Lekgetho. “I am not perfect, but I try my level best to be as good as I can. The true strength is keeping everything together when everyone expects you to fall apart. “I refused to believe that I had contracted HIV to die from it – I did not see it as a barrier, but as a catalyst propelling me towards my destiny.” Learning to cope “People are always asking me how I cope, and the simple answer is: Self-acceptance and willingness to change. When you embark on a journey of change, you need energy, and that can only happen when you have accepted the situation you are facing, good or bad.”

Disclosing one’s status “I still remember how hard it was, how I nearly got stuck in a blame-shifting zone, through denial. I could not really believe the news and was scared to share it with my parents. I felt lost and confused, but at the end of the day I was left with no choice but to help to bring an HIV-negative child into the world through the pregnancy I had, and that was to be done through disclosure, which my parents supported.” Coming to terms with stigma “Years of living with HIV has helped me to develop a thick skin and an understanding that everybody is entitled to their opinion. I cannot control what people think or say, but I can choose how to respond to it.” Making a living, and a difference “I go out and motivate young women in my community a lot, as well as encourage positive prevention programmes. “One day someone asked me why I chose to work in this field. My answer was that I was not working, but that the passion and personal experience was driving me to successfully run the programme. “I would like to tell everyone that there is life after a positive diagnosis. “I am not perfect, but I have managed to

survive because I wanted to. Currently I have successfully registered my own training company, Tshwanelo’s Training Institute, and am responsible for facilitating support groups of people living with HIV, victims of rape and domestic violence, as well as orphaned and vulnerable children. They have a special place in my heart. “Apart from the training company, I have become the voice of the voiceless. I know I can knock on any door to get resources to uplift the spirit of those in need. I am involved in so many structures and I am able to maintain balance, because I also have time for myself. I meditate often. I love my own space and respect others’ space too. Those are the things that keep me going.” Giving journalism a go “At one stage I was offered the opportunity to be a local radio presenter. That was the moment I would say truly boosted my self-esteem and I did my best. My interaction with listeners is exciting. My life as a journalist and meeting new people every day makes me happy and productive. “I believe that when you are sure of what needs to be achieved next, the universe makes it happen – you are connected to all the right channels and this is what I can say has happened to me.” Chasing career goals “HIV-positive results did not stop me from aiming for my goals. I am a third-year distance-learning student in the field of Psychology at Unisa. Keeping myself busy with assignments makes me productive and that is why life has to continue.” More about Tshwanelo’s “When I planned to register my own business I was not sure if it would materialise, but with the involvement of the One Above it has matured to the next step. “I would like to thank Soul City and the South African Business Coalition on HIV and Aids (SABCOHA) for grooming me to sustain the business. “The business is exposing me to potential funders and through the skills I acquired from different organisations I would say the future of this business is in my hands.

Cherishing family life “Life is so sweet, but one needs to work hard to get to the sweetness of life. As a mother of two boys it is also challenging to be single-handedly parenting them, but I cannot complain, because I have been able to care for them regardless of my schedule. I also make time for them and like any other parent I am excited to have them around me – they are the reason for living. “I just turned 39, and like they say: Life begins at 40. I am excited to take on this new stage in life and I know I will get there.”

LIFE is good for Mpho Lekgetho.

Enjoying an active social life “I do have friends. I prefer male friends. I feel comfortable enough sharing my challenges with them and also learning from them. Anyway, life would be boring without friends.” Working on a relationship “Life goes on. There is someone in my life. I am someone who runs relationships very professionally – some of my family friends say I am boring. “As a single parent one needs to respect children when in a relationship to avoid confusion. Psychology taught me that a boy child bonds with his mother more than a girl, therefore I play a careful relationship game, not trying to be perfect, but aiming to be a good mother as well.” Strengthening spiritual life “I am so glad I learnt to trust Him – this is the song that I sing every day and it uplifts my spirit. If it were not for Him, I would not be alive.” “I have tips that keep me spiritually connected: ) I pray to God daily. ) I read the Bible daily. ) I depend on the Holy Spirit. ) I attend church regularly. ) I am of service to others – the Good Book says: Blessed is the hand that gives. ) I learnt to conquer my doubts. ) I am aware that I have to live one day at a time. ) I have learnt how to deal with temptation. ) I tell others about Jesus Christ. Sharing with others my new life with Jesus through words and actions is one of the most satisfying and exciting experiences I have ever had. ) I have learnt to balance my wheel of life – I work with a pie chart and assign the different pieces of the pie to different areas of my life – this makes me move forward. I am so glad I have learnt to rely upon my Living God.” “I am not perfect, but I am acting perfectly imperfect. Finding role models “I do not have a specific person to point out as a role model like others do, but I believe in learning good and guiding things from everyone who contributes to my life. “I like reading spiritual books and have learnt from experience of people how they survived in this world of anarchy and frustrations. A book that truly influenced my life, is Survive your life by Susan Viviers.” ) To get in touch with Lekgetho, visit her Facebook page or call her on 076-643-1398.

EFF conference turns bloody } Boipelo Mere AT least 12 EFF members who attended the elective conference in Kimberley returned home with stab wounds and wounds inflicted by shocking devices. One is alleged to have been shot. It is also reported that a newspaper reporter was man-handled on instruction of Aubrey Baartman, the head of the EFF’s interim provincial command team in the Northern Cape. The conference was initially scheduled to take place at the Ous Meisie’s Guest Lodge in Belgravia, Kimberley, on Saturday. Members were, however, reportedly kicked out of the guest house due to rowdy behaviour, which resulted in the conference moving to the Savoy Hotel in the central business district (CBD) on Sunday. On Sunday things did not abate, as

FANA MOKOENA refuted claims of violence.

factions within the party were still at odds. One of the groups, allegedly supporting Baartman as chairperson, was singing slogans in a lobbying meeting, while the other group stood by watching. According to Mary Tongwanne, provincial spokesperson of the EFF, matters came to a head on Saturday night when Baartman and his followers were seen attacking Mbuyise Matebus, an NCOP member, with a panga. Matebus is reported to have sustained injuries, while Baartman and his followers turned their attention to Olebogeng Leserwane, who was allegedly also physically attacked before the police arrived. According to delegates security forces dressed in camouflage uniforms also contributed to the friction as they allegedly shocked everyone who was in disagreement with Baartman. According to some delegates the violence broke out when the credentials of the delegates were being determined. Sixteen of the delegates from the John Taolo Gaetsewe District were reportedly left outside the conference venue on the second day of the conference at the Savoy Hotel. The delegates, who are reported to have been elected by the branch, were allowed inside the conference on Saturday, but not on Sunday, which was when the elections took place. “I am talking about members of the organisation who were delegated by their branch,” said Phenyo Ohentse, the branch chairperson of John Taolo Gaetsewe. “They wanted to steal the conference, but we caught them in action, so they resorted to stabbing and maiming us,” Ohentse said. Bloodied EFF members from the John Taolo Gaetsewe District opened cases against Baartman at the Phakamile Mabija Police Station.

Baartman said the conference had been postponed and is set to take place within the next 14 days, before the party’s national conference would be held. The John Taolo Gaetsewe branch, however, would prefer the conference be held after the national conference. Big gospel talent hits Kby IN the next edition Express Northern Cape will be giving away tickets for the upcoming Kimberley Gospel Concert on 29 November. Top performing groups like MTN Joyous Celebration, the popular Lesothobased Catholic Choir and MaCecilia A St Paul, supported by local talent, as well as Ntsiki Shuping, Malibongwe and Grace Gomolemo, will enchant music lovers at the 2014 Kimberley Gospel Show at the Griqua Park Rugby Stadium in Kimberley. The concert will also mark the launch of the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children, thereby encouraging community members to actively fight this scourge. The visit to Kimberley and the Northern Cape by MaCecilia A St Paul will be a major highlight for the province, given that this award-winning choir has a large following. MaCecilia A St Paul is the solidarity association under the flag of St Cecilia (the patron saint for musicians) in the Roman Catholic Church. Their top-class African choral music features Sesotho rhythms that have made them a household name locally and around the world on the gospel music scene. MTN Joyous Celebration will be visiting the Northern Cape as part of their One Purpose Tour. This visit – for the third consecutive year – bears testimony to the group’s undying popularity. “It is heart-warming to see how much support this group enjoys in the province,” say the producers and organisers. New houses a gift

} Boipelo Mere EIGHT families from Paballelo in Upington received an early Christmas gift when Sylvia Lucas, Northern Cape premier, in conjunction with Standard Bank, turned the sod for the construction of their houses to start. Standard Bank, as part of their social responsibility, offered to construct eight houses in the //Khara Hais municipal area or for any families who are in dire need of housing. The bank had approached government to assist with the identification of families that met their criteria, namely that the beneficiary must either be a child-headed household or an elderly person who has never owned a house. “We were pleased when Standard Bank approached us with this proposal for us to identify families in need of housing,” Lucas said at the sod turning. “Although provision of housing forms a priority of this government, we often find it difficult to provide for everyone due to a lack of resources. “We therefore thank them for this noble initiative and entering into a partnership with government in order to put a roof

over people’s heads. Because we keep a list of people who live in dilapidated houses, we could easily choose from this list when we were approached.” The //Khara Hais Municipality provided the serviced sites for the construction of these houses. The stakeholders promised that the 45 m2 houses, each equipped with a bathroom, ceiling and a tiled roof, will be ready for hand-over on 5 December. The foundation of each house consists of a steel structure that reinforces the house and prevents structural damage. “Standard Bank views having a house as very important and will gladly work with any partner that will make this a reality. As Standard Bank we are here to assist communities and will definitely be doing more,” said Mercia Bloem, head of province for Standard Bank. The first-time homeowner Ragel Spannenberg (75) thanked government for making her dream of owning a house a reality. She looks forward to moving into her home. Lucas challenges all other financial institutions to follow the example set by the bank and work with government to lift people out of poverty in any way their policies provide.

) Shield the ATM keypad with your hand to prevent people from seeing when you enter your PIN. ) Never disclose your PIN to anybody, not even to the bank or police. ) Press the “Cancel” key, withdraw your card and proceed to an alternative ATM if you feel the ATM is not functioning correctly. ) Use the help line or nearest phone to contact your bank or the police if your card gets jammed, retained or is lost, or if someone interferes with you at an ATM. ) Take your time when transacting and ensure your cash and card are carefully secured in your wallet, handbag or pocket before leaving the ATM.

town and in the township, he is now a household name who is ready for the big stage and should be working at releasing an album soon. The Kimberley Gospel Show coincides with the launch of the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children.

“It goes without saying that gospel music seeks to heal individuals and communities. “Through this show we hope to highlight the scourge of abuse and encourage communities to eradicate this cancer from our society,” comments the organisers.

Shakes makes SA bask in glory THE South African football fraternity woke up basking in glory on Sunday morning after a son of the soil did us proud – extremely proud indeed. The achievement would not necessarily be on the same scale as the exploits of the Bafana Bafana class of 1996, which won the continental championship or the qualifying for the World Cup Tournament, but Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba’s troops have surely restored the nation’s pride and unquestionable belief in the national team. For the first time in as many years, Bafana Bafana have qualified for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Tournament that will be staged in Equatorial Guinea. They nogal did that with one qualifier match still to be played. In the past South Africa could only qualify for the popular African football showpiece by virtue of being the hosts, but that is a thing of the past now thanks to Mashaba who has turned Bafana Bafana into a well-oiled machine since he was appointed as the head coach in July this year. He took over from Gordon Igesund whose contract, which ended in August, was never renewed by the South African Football Association (Safa). Under the mentorship of Mashaba, the Mighty Bafana Bafana have played five matches and they are yet to lose. Mashaba, who was unceremoniously dropped from the team in 2004, is the only coach to have led a South African team to the Olympics in 2000. Remember the exploits of the national u.23 side at the Sydney Olympics where we lowered the Brazilian flag. That was the best South Africa u.23 side we have ever had. It comprised talented youngsters such as Quinton Fortune, Delron Buckley, Benni McCarthy, Siyabonga Nomvete and Steve Lekoelea. Back to Mashaba: He has proven

My view Sidwell Guduka Sports editor

I believe he has what it takes to qualify Bafana for the next World Cup Tour nament. without doubt that he is the right man to take Bafana Bafana to dizzying heights. The former Swaziland senior men’s national team coach had a successful stint with Bafana Bafana in the past whereby he won the Cosafa Tournament in 2003. He also qualified the team for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations Tournament in Tunisia. His record with Bafana is glowing. Mashaba’s success with the national team can be attributed to the fact that he respects his players, and his players respect him in return. He is also able to bring out the best in players. I hope the powers-that-be at Safa show their faith in the man and keep him at the helm much longer. I believe he has what it takes to qualify Bafana for the next World Cup Tournament. Meanwhile, South Africa face Nigeria in the 2015 Afcon Qualifier at the Akwa Ibom Stadium today at 19:00. We wish Bra Shakes and his boys the best of luck.

BAFANA BAFANA are confident of brushing the Super Eagles aside when the two continental powerhouses meet in the Afcon Qualifier match at the Ibom International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, tonight at 19:00. Shakes Mashaba’s men, who jetted off to Nigeria on Monday, have already qualified for the Afcon 2015 Tournament to be held in Equatorial Guinea following their 2-1 victory over Sudan in Durban last Saturday. There is no love lost when South Africa and Nigeria cross swords in any sporting code, and Mashaba is well aware of that. “The Nigerians don’t want to lose against South Africa, that alone will make this match a tough one, and we also have the assignment to break the hoodoo that we always lose when we play against them. We have to go out there positive and believe we will do well,” said Mashaba. They have not lost in the five Afcon qualifiers played so far, having registered two away wins, two home draws and one win at home. “Our away record is very good, and we can only hope for the best in the upcoming match. What makes me happy is that we have scored two goals at home, which was a challenge in our past home games. I will be even happier if we score goals in Nigeria and that will give us the dignity we deserve. Winning three away games will definitely give us the respect we deserve as a nation. “Once we beat Nigeria, the reigning African champions, it will bring confidence to the whole squad and to the country and also finish the qualifiers without a defeat,” he said. He has retained the same team that beat Sudan this past weekend, but he might make

some changes in his starting line-up. Thulani Serero, who gave a man of the match performance against Sudan, is a doubtful starter due to a hamstring injury he had suffered on Saturday. But Lehlohonolo Majoro, who missed the match because of an ankle sprain, is available for selection. “There will be one or two changes to the playing personnel, but we don’t want to break the rhythm of the team because they are doing very well. At the same time we have to give other players a chance to see what they have to offer,” Mashaba said. Bafana Bafana go into this match having

already won Group A. They are sitting on top of the log with 11 points after five matches. Nigeria and Congo are sitting on positions two and three respectively. The two sides have each collected seven points after the same number of games, but Nigeria have a better goal difference. ) Read more about Bafana Bafana on p. 7.
