Senseless murders shock Domestic violence allegedly claims two women
} Boipelo Mere TWO gruesome murders, related to domestic violence, occurring two weekends in a row in Kimberley, shocked the province. In both incidents women were stabbed and killed by their male partners. The latest incident occurred on Sunday morning (08/03) when Lerato Olifant (27) was stabbed and killed with a spear by a man reported to be her ex-boyfriend in Seochoareng Street, Galeshewe. According to Maj. Dimakatso Mooi of the police, the police in Galeshewe are investigating a case of murder after they found Olifant dead with multiple stab wounds on Sunday(08/03) at about 07:00. “It is alleged that the boyfriend found the deceased relaxing with friends at a house nearby and forcefully dragged her into his car and drove off. A few metres further, the deceased jumped out of the car and ran into the nearest house at Seochwareng. “The suspect stopped the vehicle and pulled out a spear from the boot of his car. He followed the deceased into the house where he stabbed her several times,” said Mooi. She further revealed that the suspect had fled the scene in his car after the stabbing. She added that the suspect, who handed himself over to the police later the same afternoon, was expected to appear in court on Wednesday (11/03). Anyone with more information regarding the incident is requested to contact Det. Sgt. Attie Browers of Galeshewe on 053-807-6000 or 082-469-0138. In another murder case in Platfontein in Kimberley, Estella Kabinda (41) was stabbed several times in the chest and face by her 43-year-old boyfriend on Saturday, 28 February, following an argument. According to the Kimberley police, the suspect also stabbed Kabinda’s mother in the chest and arms when she intervened. The mother was hospitalised for three days after the incident. Sergio Kock of the provincial SAPS further said that the suspect, who had tried to flee the scene, had been stoned by the community and found dead when the police arrived. No one, including the police, could confirm the rumours that Kabinda’s boyfriend had cut open her body and exposed her intestines, and that the community had done the same to him when they found him. Police are still investigating the incident. The community is still very traumatized

It is the first time that such a terrible thing has happened in our community, said one woman. She also stated that no one in the community was prepared to talk about that incident.
) Platfontein is an area where the Xhu! and the Khwe tribes have been settled. During a debate on the State of the Province Address on 25 February, the premier of the Northern Cape, Sylvia Lucas, congratulated the government for efforts made to integrate the Xhu! and the Khwe through its Social Cohesion Sum-
mits. Referring to the number of murders and fighting that have been reported to have taken place in these communities, she said it was crucial for these communities to be socially prepared and get along with each other so as to prevent genocide from occurring.

THE Education With Enterprise Trust’s (EWET) Entrepreneurship Education (EE) programme has made the dreams of learners of the Xhukhwesa Combined School come true. That came after the learners, who had entered the competition while they were in gr. 11, recently emerged as the provincial winners, scooping a prize of R50 000. They plan on building their own school craft shop where they can sell hand-made San crafts and products to keep their culture alive. The school was invited to enter for the EWET Entrepreneurship Education Simama Ranta, which means empowering the South African economy through entrepreneurship education. The aim of the competition is to identify, honour and showcase those South African secondary school learners of gr. 8 to gr. 11, who perform well in entrepreneurship education. The Xunkhwesa learners, who are now in gr. 12, entered the competition on the strength of their market day products. Here they sold and exhibited their hand-made materials like weaved baskets, placemat arts and crafts, bows and arrows and animal crafts. Two members of the group, Jason Marenda and Nashada Ndango, were flown to attend the national presentations in Johannesburg, where a school from Mpumalanga was crowned as the national winner. According to a representative of EWET, Solomon Kabanda, a group of 54
‘The learners should be allowed to be as creative as they want to be and get as much exposure as possible.’ – Solomon Kabanda learners from around the country attended the national leg of the competition. The programme is expected to enhance entrepreneurship education among learners. Applauding the learners of Xhukhwesa for taking the initiative to enter the competition by themselves and boasting about Marenda giving one of the best presentations, he invited more schools to enter the competition. “Due to the rising unemployment rate in the country, entrepreneurship is the way to go. “It can shape you, as we need job creators. The reason why the representing learners were treated like executive business people is to boost their confidence at this young age,” explained Kabanda. He said that the prize money, sponsored by Eskom, was to be used for the school’s enterprises. “The learners should be allowed to be as creative as they want to be and get as much exposure as possible. Not a single cent should be used without the learners’ approval,” he said.

Artists showcase their talents

IN celebrating 20 years of democracy, Why Sala Arts Against Crime gathered local artists from ward 17 and ward 31 to celebrate their talent. Why Sala Arts Against Crime was in charge of the extravaganza of mural paintings and graffiti that was held at the Club 2000 hall last weekend. According to Itumeleng Thebe, who is the organiser of the group, they are working through a sponsorship from the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture on cleaning abandoned buildings and crime hot spots to make them communityfriendly. “We do that through artworks where we tell the story of democracy. We paint the abandoned walls.” He further stated that this was their first big event and that they also invited performing artists and DJs. The group, that was started three years ago, aims to positively change the attitude of the youth. “We achieve that by getting them involved in our community outreach programmes through which we also visit old houses and clean and paint them. “If then artists can succeed in getting their their artwork appreciated, they will be motivated to make a living through their work and recruit more members.” Ward 31 councillor Moses Nhlapo emphasised that Club 2000 was the place to be. “Through activities like these, our youth is showing those gangsters from other wards that they are not interested in joining their illegal activities. “They take advantage of our ward because they are unknown in the community,” he said. Nhlapo said that through activities like these, they can win the battle against

Economic growth in Pixley ka Seme alarming } Boipelo Mere THE people of the Pixley ka Seme District are concerned about the slow pace of growth within their community. The community members who attended the Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) summit in De Aar last week Tuesday (03/03) are reported to have given John Lolwana, the district executive mayor, a big ovation when he slammed the system for allowing big contractors to suffocate small contractors such as SMMEs.
Solar contractors, who were expected to give the economy of Pixley ka Seme a boost, were described by Lolwana as having given the community a hard time by not empowering local SMMEs. “Those people got away with murder. The big contractors don’t subcontract our people running SMMEs,” Lolwana was quoted as saying, in a statement by Lucky Chonga, spokesperson of the Northern Cape Department of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism. In the statement complaints were raised
that local municipalities laws were too tight to accommodate local SMMEs, while they allowed foreigners to make money. This, Lolwana pointed out, was what led to banks not knowing “our SMMEs” except when they could prove that they had money. According to the mayor, these were some of the things that were holding back the community, “because there is no way that government can deal with all our problems”. “These are our brothers who helped us out during apartheid, but how many of our people today have shops?” Lolwana was
further quoted as saying. It was also pointed out at the summit that the solar panels in use in the district had not been manufactured in the district, but elsewhere so that that people from outside the province benefitted economically from them. The summit also heard that water provision and availability issues had to be addressed to improve the economic activity in most towns situated within the Pixley ka Seme District Municipal Area. This according to the department.

Evictions worry stand residents } Boipelo Mere ALMOST half of the residents of Bloemanda are living in fear of eviction. The residents, who have been living on the stands for 20 years or more, say the owners of the stands who hold the title deeds are making their lives a living hell. The owners are reported to either involve a third party by reselling the houses or handing it over to other beneficiaries. In most cases the owners of the houses are not the owners of the stands that were issued in 1989, with a toilet and a tap. According to some of the residents, the stand owners have allowed different people to stay in their shacks and are living elsewhere after reaching verbal agreements. Occupants were granted houses, which have resulted in a nightmare as the two parties are now at loggerheads. The current occupants, who say they are now untouchable, say that they either bought the houses from the owners of the stands or have never really met the owners. Occupants were placed on some of the stands after empty stands were identified in Bloemanda. They were allowed to stay to reduce vandalism. According to the occupants, they are ready to take matters into their own hands, as they refuse to be evicted. They claim that their vulnerability is being turned into election campaigns by politicians who come and go while the stand owners turned the houses into moneymaking schemes. According to Benjamin Mahumapelo, the ANC branch chairperson in Bloemanda, they have raised this matter with the Sol Plaatje Municipality and various MECs of housing who came and went, but nothing was done. The municipality promised the occupants entitlement documents during Patric Lenyibi’s term, but it never materialised. The story of Klaas Riet (53) is one of many. In his street alone, eight other people live in fear of eviction by title deed owners. They complain that the municipality, which knows about their problem, continues to block their electricity due to these irregularities. The angry residents camped in Riet’s yard until midnight last week Tuesday (03/03), waiting for the Sherriff of the Court who threatened to evict Riet from the house that
he claims to have bought and lived in for the past 23 years. Riet said that he even feared going to work as the Sherriff of the Court continued to harass him to move out of the house. He moved onto the stand after an agreement with the owner, Emily Langa, who passed away in 2010. According to Riet, he had an agreement with Langa to pay R10 000. Langa’s two children, Nomvula Kok and Isaac Langa, were reportedly involved in the transaction. Isaac attested to the statement and added that they had never taken the legal route of going to the conveyancing attorneys to change ownership of the house as expected. “Yes, we received the house money from Riet and used it for day to day expenses. My mother, my sister and I shared it,” said Isaac. “Now Nomvula wants to remove Riet from the house and make her daughter stay in it. “I was so ashamed that she tried to trick me into giving her sole authority of the house so that she could give it to her daughter,” said Isaac. However, Kok sang a different tune when visited by Express Northern Cape. She said that she and Isaac both had an agreed to hand the house over to her married daughter during a meeting after her mother’s funeral. The decision was reportedly taken after the realisation that they both had their own houses and had to have a new beneficiary who was responsible. They even changed the municipal account to be in her daughter’s name. According to Kok, her mother had made a verbal agreement with Riet to temporarily stay in the house, as she was too ill to live alone. “I do not know anything about a R10 000. I have never even heard my mother say that she went to or is going to collect any money for rental from Riet,” Kok said. “The sad part is that Riet makes me out to be a bad person and the whole Bloemanda sees me as the devil. “He did not even pay for services. That is why we are taking the house – because my daughter receives endless notices from the municipality.” The Kapa Bokone Community Development Foundation stands with the community and regards the evictions as inhuman practice. The organisation deals with various social ills across the
province and tries to intervene by involving the relevant stakeholders. Maku Maris, founder and chairperson, emphasises that the Bloemanda title deeds should be investigated, because most of the title deed owners have other properties that they stay on. She says their title deeds should be taken away or be reversed, because they lied to government about needing a place to stay. “These people lied to government and got the stands under a false pretence while they saught comfort elsewhere,” says Maris. “While staying on other properties that they own they make arrangements with occupants to look after their places. After the RDP houses are built they decide to claim the houses. We must put a stop to this.” Maris says that these evictions especially target RDP houses where the people’s lives are hampered due to families being left destitute. “Serious intervention is needed from government, as we deal with an angry society where education is also hampered. Sometimes we end up with the children being emotionally affected, resulting in poor performance at schools.”

United face tough battle } Sidwell Guduka
THE struggling SuperSport United have had the better of Phunya Sele Sele in recent seasons, but Wednesday’s (11/03) clash at the Free State Stadium could prove to be tricky for Gordon Igesund’s troops. Matsatsantsa have lost two back-to-back matches going into Wednesday’s fixture and they have a mountain to climb when they come up against a resurgent Bloemfontein Celtic side who are unbeaten so far this year. Siwelele appear to have been revitalised under Clinton Larsen, who returned to the Mangaung outfit late last year following the sacking of Ernst Middendorp. Under the guidance of Larsen, Celtic have played six matches. They have won four, drawn one and lost one of those games – scoring nine times in the process while conceding only two goals. “We are expecting a tough game against United after they lost their previous two matches. They will be coming to us like wounded lions. But we are going to make things difficult for them,” John Maduka, Celtic manager, told Express. “We want to try and win all our home matches so that we can climb higher and higher on the log. I believe we can finish the season on fourth position if we keep winning home and away,” he said. Celtic are sitting at fourth position on Quarter Three (Q3) after collecting 13 points in six matches. They trail leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by three points. Celtic have a game in hand though, but that does not guarantee points. However, Maduka said he believed his side stood a good chance of winning the Q3. “We have a good team to compete with. But we just need to concentrate on our game and take our matches one at a time. If we win our next two encounters against United and Polokwane City, we can win it,” he said. All eyes will be on Celtic striker Lerato Lamola, who has scored nine goals so far this season. He is the Premier Soccer
THE CHASE IS ON: Bloemfontein Celtic will rely on players like Mukuka Mulenga (right) to score goals for them when they face SuperSport United at the Free State Stadium in the two teams’ clash on Wednesday (11/03). Photo: Charlé Lombard League’s joint top-scorer with Cuthbert Malajila of Mamelodi Sundowns. So, Lamola will be hoping to get his name on the score sheet to increase his goal tally. The Limpopo-born hitman will rely heavily on players such as Mukuka Mulenga, Musa
Nyatama and Thapelo Morena to supply passes to him. On the other hand, United will be hoping that striker Jeremy Brockie continues his scoring form against Siwelele on Wednesday (11/03). The New Zealander has scored four
