Man dies in mom’s arms Allegedly stabbed by suspect after argument about goods

} Boipelo Mere “WHY did he choose to stab him in the heart and nowhere else? Maybe then he would still be alive. My brother died for useless things, cheap toilet paper and an umbrella that he knew nothing about. It is clear that the guy wanted to kill him.” These were the words of Lebogang Suipers’s (27) sister, Olebile Louw, who is confident that her brother would never have gone looking for trouble. Suipers reportedly died in the arms of his mother, Martha Suipers (58), on Saturday (14/03) after being stabbed in the heart following an argument with the suspect. His mother was left traumatised by the incident, as she could do nothing to save her son, whom she stayed with. According to the family, the suspect stabbed Suipers after accusing him of taking his goods – some toilet paper and an umbrella that he had allegedly stolen from a Chinese shop next to the deceased’s home. The suspect reportedly hid the items he had stolen under a bush in Lebogang’s yard and left. On his return, he could not find the goods. Suipers reportedly came from inside the house and the confrontation ensued. “I was not home and was called by my mom to help, as Lebogang had been stabbed,” said Louw. “Upon rushing home, I found my mom, assisted by a passer-by, calling the ambulance and the police, with Lebogang at her feet. She was very nervous and asked me to rush to the police station, which is just around the corner from our house, for assistance in sending an ambulance. “According to my mom, she and Lebogang had been doing laundry together as usual when he left the house after removing the clothes from the washing line. “She said she had just heard Lebogang shouting, ‘Mom, please call an ambulance, I have been stabbed in the heart’. Lebogang had said this lifting his T-shirt and showing my mom the wound in his chest. “My mom rushed to the other room to fetch her phone and did not find Lebogang in the kitchen where she had left him. She went outside to look for him and found him on the ground, struggling to breathe. “She called a passer-by to help her.” According to Louw, the family was still puzzled by the fact that the police never came when they were called. She said not even the ambulance came on time. “On my return from the police station, I found the pathologists at home and my brother already covered.

THE bush where the goods which led to the death of Lebogang Suipers (27) were allegedly hidden. Photo: Boipelo Mere “Netcare 911 arrived later and attended to my mom, who was in shock.” In a press statement, Santi Steinmann, the media liaison officer of Netcare 911, stated that their paramedics had arrived at the scene and had found the lifeless body of a man lying on the ground. Upon assessment, they found that the man had already died prior to their arrival due to the extensive injuries sustained during the incident. “There was nothing more that could be done for the man and he was declared dead at the scene.”

The Kagisho police have confirmed they are investigating a case of murder after the body of a 27-year-old man was found on Saturday. “It is alleged that the deceased was stabbed with an unknown object in the left side of his rib cage,” said Lt. Andrea Cloete in a statement. ) Maj. Dimakatso Mooi has stated that a 37-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday (16/03) after information had linked him to the murder. He will appear in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (19/03). The investigation continues.

FREE SCREENING for blood pressure, blood glucose, urine testing and HIV counselling and testing (HCT) was done by health-care professionals at the Homestead Shopping Complex recently. Community members heeded the call last Thursday (12/03), and took advantage of this opportunity in observation of World Kidney Day. Under the theme for 2015, Kidney health for all, the department was satisfied with the turnout. Before 12:00 three full pages of the register had already been filled out by members of the public. Trained nurses attended to the community members and performed rapid HIV tests, blood pressure, glucose and urine tests to determine kidney failure and irregular sugar levels, which is reported to be a risk factor. According to Sr Rose Rautenheimer, who is the transplant co-ordinator at the Kimberley Hospital, the community responded well to the programme and showed a lot of commitment. “The community understands our

concern and that we aim to detect the problem at an early stage. We also encourage them to test every six months. “The most cases we came across were of detecting blood traces and protein in a patient’s urine, which is a risk factor,” said Rautenheimer. She said they referred these cases to the nearest clinic and took down the patients’ contact details to do follow-ups. Lulu Mxekezo, spokesperson of the Department of Health in the province, said in a press statement that early detection of failing kidney function was crucial because it offered a window to implement treatment before end-stage kidney damage or cardiovascular problems occurred. “Screening is critical for those people considered to be at high risk of kidney disease, like diabetes and hypertension patients, individuals who are obese or smokers, adults over 50 years of age and people with a family history of kidney disease, diabetes mellitus and/or hypertension,” Mxekezo added. She called on all community members to check if they were at risk for kidney disease and encouraged more people to take a simple kidney function test.

Eviction angers many } Boipelo Mere

MIXED emotions were displayed by residents of Bloemanda when Klaas Riet (53) was evicted from a house that he had been staying in for the past 23 years. The angry residents, who said they had been threatened with arrest by the police, tried to stop the eviction from taking place. While Riet was at work last week Wednesday (11/03), his wife called to tell him the Sheriff of the Court had arrived with a team of men and police officers, displaying a letter of eviction to throw them out. On arriving at the house, where the Riets’ furniture and all their belongings were packed out on the street, Express Northern Cape was met by the angry residents, some shouting and some crying for the couple and their two children who had been thrown out. The last edition of Express Northern Cape reported on the three parties at loggerheads over the house in Goitsimang Street. Riet claimed that he had bought the house from the previous owner, Emily Langa, who had passed away in 2010, for R10 000. She had, however, never made the change of ownership, leaving the house to her two children, Nomvula Kok and Isaac Langa.

EVERYONE waited on Isaac Langa, who sent the message for them not to worry, as he was on his way.

Kok was alleged to have made attempts to evict Riet from the house after the funeral, and claimed that she did not have any knowledge of the R10 000 agreement. She claims they had agreed with Langa to give the house to her daughter, who is now married. Langa, who said that Kok should be ashamed of herself, claimed they all knew about the money and had shared it amongst three of them (himself, Kok and his mother). Langa said that Riet was entitled to stay in the house and dared his sister to contact him if she had something to say about it. On Wednesday, Langa was furious to find Riet’s belongings out on the street. Armed with tools and a new door lock, he broke down the door that had been locked by the sheriff, changed the locks and handed Riet the new set of house keys. “This is also my house. I am a 50% owner with Nomvula. Her trick of fraudulently changing ownership at the High Court without my knowledge did not work, as I have reversed everything,” said an angry Langa in front of the chanting residents. “I want you to write this. Nomvula not ashamed of throwing out this old man after enjoying his money. “Now she wants to benefit from it. She

The couple was concerned about their belongings, as rain clouds were starting to gather. Photos: Boipelo Mere knows very well that we are all to blame for not changing ownership of the house into Riet’s name. The man trusted us and waited.” According to Riet, he had paid the R10 000 in instalments while he worked at Cemforce. Kok was always present when he took the money to her mother, with whom she stayed. “I am not so stupid to knowingly look after someone’s house for 23 years. Nomvula is the

one who even asked me when we were going to make the change of ownership when I took the last instalment. I am very disappointed,” said Riet. According to Langa, he and his sister were summoned to the High Court the day after the eviction, where they were instructed not to take any action concerning the house until the court had ruled on the matter. Another date will be set for the hearing.

Chicken à-la-farm a success! EVER wondered how chicken pieces end up in the 2 kg packet that makes up your Sunday meal? Express Northern Cape reporter BOIPELO MERE made her way to Warrenton, to go find out what the process entails. A GROUP of hard-working employees in Warrenton are not only workers at Warrenton Superchicken, they also co-own the company that is situated next to the N12. They are people who ensure that you enjoy the chicken that you purchase from your local supermarkets. Warrenton Superchicken is not a big company, but from the time they started in 2002 to today, they have had their fair share of troubles and triumphs. According to the members involved, the first phase of starting the business was so difficult that some of the members gave up and left, but those who stayed and were patient enough to wait, now know that the recipe to success is patience. “The year 2013 was a turning point for us,” said Mabel Motlhale the business administrator, who was accompanied by her colleague Rebecca Pitso, the production manager, during the interview. “In 2002 we acquired this farm where we are now and started a co-operative. We started this farm with the hope of moving into other forms of farming at a later stage, but the chicken farming did not succeed and we were stuck in limbo for 11 years. “We got lucky in 2013 when the Department of Agriculture and Land Reform in the Northern Cape province came to our aid and pushed us.” Motlhale said that the department assisted them by training them in production management, computer skills, and financial management. The department also assisted them with a grant. According to Motlhale, the

THE cleaning process of the chickens. 24 ha farm is an empowerment gesture from government to the community of Warrenton. The abattoir section of the farm has invigorated the business, because they grow the chickens, and are responsible for the final packaging as the slaughtering is now done in-house. The farm has seven chicken coups, which have a 62 000 holding capacity. Motlhale, however, said that they could afford to house only 7 000 chickens at a time, because of the limited market. This is seen as a loss as the available

space is not being fully utilised. “We are looking for a broader market because we are currently only supplying individuals in our community. “We hope to spread to other provinces to widen our market,” said Motlhale. The Warrenton Superchicken farm has 53 workers, of whom 17 are temporary workers. Motlhale believes that if they can find a market, they will definitely need more staff and this will help decrease unemployment in the community. Pitso and Motlhale took the Express Northern Cape reporter on a tour through the abattoir, to offer first-hand experience on how the slaughtering process is conducted. The chickens are brought from the chicken coups in crates and are put on a scale to measure their weight. In preparation for the slaughter the chickens are shocked in order not to stress them when they are slaughtered. After being slaughtered they are then moved to a hot-water pot before being put in a plucking machine. According to Motlhale, they package their chickens in 2 kg and 5 kg bags of mixed portions, livers, hearts, necks and intestines at the abattoir. “We know for instance that in the course of our operation a vet can drop in at any time. “So we carry out our slaughter process in accordance with the industry’s rules and regulations. “The SPCA and Department of Labour also drop in from time to time,” said Motlhale. When asked about the shop at the entrance of the farm,

Annual fiesta held soon } Boipelo Mere THRONGS of cultural tourists are again expected to flock to Kimberley for its massive annual fiesta, the Diamonds and Dorings Festival next month. This being the 15th edition of this cultural tourism event, the organisers and promoters promise a much higher level of entertainment. The event will begin on Saturday (04/04) and will be characterized by even more attractive offerings with impressive performances, artistic grandeur and great entertainment value. The event is expected to be a big economic boost for local businesses and hotels, guest houses and garages, to name a few, can gain big profits as visitors come from afar and in big numbers to enjoy themselves over the Easter weekend. Funded by the Sol Plaatje Municipality, the growth of the event has seen it now forming part of the National Department of Arts and Culture’s Mzansi Golden Economy national flagship events. “The vision of the Department of Arts and Culture goes beyond social cohesion. We believe that arts, culture and heritage play a pivotal role in the economic self-determination and skills development of people, hence the department’s continuous support of this event,” said Northern Cape MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Motlaping. The event will begin with a marathon starting at 06:00 at

the Convention Centre on Saturday (04/04), followed by a Comedy Gala Night on the same day and same venue, led by the popular David Kau & Friends and Wayne Mackay. On Sunday (05/04) all roads will lead to the Langleg Resort for a day of entertainment by a superb line-up of top-notch South African acts that will include Mango Groove, Zonke, Thandiswa Mazwai, Kelly Khumalo, The Soil, Muzart, Ringo, Bhudaza, Dalez, Khuli Chana, Rythmic Vocalists, Tribal Culture, SMS, DukeSoul, Lacoste and many more. “For this event we always use service providers from the Sol Plaatje Municipality and surrounding areas,” said Somandla Sibisi, one of the event’s organisers. “Local taxis are also invited to ferry revellers to and from townships to where events will be held. This gives revellers a chance to enjoy themselves without worrying about driving home tired and also avoid the bumper-to-bumper traffic leading to the venue,” Sibisi said. Patrons are advised to book their tickets at Computicket and make early accommodation arrangements to avoid disappointment. The event starts at 12:00 and will run until late. People are advised to come early to secure their picnic spots. Food and beverages will be sold at the venue but people may bring camping chairs and picnic baskets. Field band on the move THE Tsantsabane Field Band can now easily access youth from neighbouring areas, thanks to Kumba Iron Ore, a business unit of Anglo American, providing a refurbished second-hand vehicle to further the cause of youth development. According to Cindy Ramnarayan, communications practitioner at Anglo American, the donation was part of social and community strategy efforts aimed at addressing the gaps in the key focus areas: education and skills development; healthcare and social well-being; enterprise development; local procurement; and training, employment and other opportunities for previously disadvantaged individuals. She said in a press release that the Kolomela Mine had been supporting the Tsantsabane Field Band Foundation, a national youth development programme that teaches life skills and promotes the holistic development

of marginalised youth through the medium of music, dance and life skills, since 2013. “Kumba Iron Ore, a business unit of Anglo American, through its youth development in the Tsantsabane Municipal Area, became a strategic focus area due to the societal issues and pressures young people are facing today. “They face many challenging elements, like substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and school absenteeism and drop-out at an early age,” Ramnarayan said. “The lack of recreation and access to relevant information on economic opportunities or services for our youth also impact negatively on their development, additionally worsened by a weak civil society presence. “Kumba, together with its partners, is committed to contributing to addressing the socio-economic challenges young people

face by creating a positive influence in their lives through initiatives like sport, arts and culture programmes. “Through these initiatives, we assist them to grow their talents and potential and invest in them becoming future leaders in our communities.” Peter Aaron, regional operations manager of the Field Band Foundation, revealed that transport had always been challenging, and as a result had limited the flexibility of the Tsantsabane Field Band tutors and management for practice sessions. “The field band has been empowered by utilising this vehicle to broaden the involvement of youth from other local communities, like Jenn Haven, Skeyfontein and Maremane,” Aaron said. “This vehicle will allow the field band to efficiently manage time and reach more young people.”

NASHADA NDANGO, a gr. 11 learner of the !Xunkhwesa Combined School in Platfontein, shares her experience of flying in an aeroplane for the first time and being treated like a real entrepreneur in Johannesburg. She and a fellow learner, Jason Marenda, represented the school, which was announced the provincial winner of the Education With Enterprise Trust (EWET) Entrepreneurship Programme. I WOULD like to share with you my experience at the exhibition at Sci Bona in Johannesburg. First of all, I must mention that the aeroplane trip was amazing. I could not stop looking down at the clouds. To think, I was above those clean, white clouds. After we had arrived at the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, we took a shuttle to the hotel where we were very warmly welcomed. That evening we had a meeting where we were informed of all the rules and regulations. The next day we went on an educational tour sponsored by Eskom during which I learnt a lot. For the next week we were at Sci Bona. We had to put together our own cubicle with some help from

NASHADA NDANGO of the !Xunkhwesa Combined School. Photo: Boipelo Mere the Eskom guys. We packed out our products and prepared ourselves to present it to the customers. We attended workshops where we each did presentations on different topics on entrepreneurship. Here I really learnt a lot about being an entrepreneur. We met a lot of business people and even received proposals from

some of them to help us in starting our own business. We were also exposed to many different business ideas. I would like to thank the EWET and Eskom for giving us the opportunity to be exposed to so much. It was my first time away from home. I enjoyed it very much and I also made new friends from different provinces.

It was from this insight that Let’s Play was born in November 2005 with the aim of raising awareness of our social situation and to introduce and encourage play, activity and sport in schools. EXPRESS NORTHERN CAPE, WEDNESDAY 18 MARCH 2015

Hosts ready for games } Boipelo Mere

THE moment that the Northern Cape arm of the South African Sports Association for the Intellectually Impaired (SASAII) has been waiting for has finally arrived. The Northern Cape team has been eagerly waiting for 25 years to host the Open Summer National Games after participating in the games since its inception. Being the host for the first time, the province expects around 1 000 participants from all nine provinces to land in Kimberley on Sunday (22/03) for the games that will officially run from Monday (23/03) until Friday. Out of the nine sporting codes presented – blackball, cricket, indoor rowing, hokker, swimming, table tennis, athletics, futsal and basket ball – team Northern Cape will participate in six. According to the chairperson of the association in the Northern Cape, Edwena Julies, the codes which the home team will be participating in are cricket, swimming, table tennis, indoor rowing, and hokker. The proud hostess believes the home team will scoop a few gold medals during the tournament. “We are so excited and sure of ourselves that we pulled out all the stops to put our province on the map,” said Julies. “I am confident that our table tennis boys’ and girls’ team will keep the momentum going of being tops. “In 2013 our boys’ team won gold, while our girls’ team won silver medals. “I am confident that they will not go down as they have been preparing,” she said. According to Julies, all the major arrangements for the tournament have been taken care of. “The venues have been confirmed with the Sol Plaatje Municipality and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in the province, while the South African Defence Force has availed its premises for the blackball and the snooker games,” Julies said.

FUTSAL, a variant of soccer, will be among the sporting codes next week.

HNK wen 4 uit 4 rugbywedstryde

KURUMAN

THE ONLY FACTORY IN KURUMAN
