Entrepreneurs developed

Will get opportunity to present innovative ideas V Benneli Olivier Van der Walt EXISTING and aspiring entrepreneurs in the Northern Cape will get the opportunity to present their skills and to come up with new initiatives and innovative ideas to benefit the aluminium sector. The Aluminium Benificiation Initiative (ABI) held an information session with five local entrepreneurs in Kathu recently. The focus of the initiative is on businesses already working in the aluminium sector, looking to expand their current operations. This follows an economic development initiative by BHP Billiton and Hulamin,

along with the ABI to benefit the country’s aluminium resources. The programme is supervised by the executive development (USB-ED) programme of the University of Stellenbosch (US), which forms part of the university’s Business School. The aim is to identify, develop and support entrepreneurs and guide them to build sustainable businesses that are able to utilise about 100 tons of aluminium each per annum. According to De Wet Schoeman, the director of the Centre for Applied Entrepreneurship at the USB-ED, small to medium businesses are the leading job creators in

the Northern Cape, the country and the world. He said that entrepreneurs should recognise the opportunities around them, and use them to further and expand their current businesses. “You as SMMEs must aim at becoming suppliers to bigger companies, and so benefit from an existing market.” He went on to say that too much of the country makes use of international imports instead of developing innovative ways of using the available resources in South Africa. “The ABI is supported by big companies that wish to inspire big dreams in local

SMMEs. Aluminium is the wave of the future and entrepreneurs must make use of its benefits.” Doris Viljoen, the project leader of the ABI, said that the Northern Cape was an untapped resource when it came to SMME development. “Here in Kathu, entrepreneurs have a unique opportunity to expand their businesses. “It is up to you as businessmen and -women to think creatively and use this initiative as a stepping stone to success.” Interested SMMEs can contact Viljoen on 082-965-7007 or via e-mail at doris.viljoen@usb-ed.com.

Libraries plan for disasters

A TWO-DAY disaster planning and bookmaking workshop has been presented by the National Library of South Africa in Cape Town in partnership with the Africana Library Trust in Kimberley. The workshop was presented on 26 and 27 February at the William Humphreys Art Gallery, the Kimberley Africana Library and the Paper Conservation, Bookbinding and Training Centre in Kimberley. Sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture, the workshop was attended by library workers from the Northern Cape, North-West and Gauteng. According to Douwe Drijfhout, execu-

tive librarian at Preservation Services, the purpose of the workshop was to prepare library workers and managers to deal with library disasters, ranging from fire, flooding, pest infestation and the challenges of extreme climate in regions with high temperatures and humidity. Drijfhout stated that the workshop included practical demonstrations, as well as looking at the use of disaster equipment and the content of disaster boxes. The workshop was concluded with a bookmaking session where each participant bound their own copy of a diary for 2015.

Put on your running shoes THE second weekly Parkrun in Kimberley will take place this weekend (28/03) at the Rooifontein Game Farm. Parkrun originated in London, England, in 2004 and was brought to South Africa in 2011 by Bruce Fordyce, former Comrades Marathon champion. It has since grown in leaps and bounds and Kimberley is officially the 51st Parkrun venue in the country, says Karien Potgieter, one of the organisers. Parkrun is a free, timed 5 km walk or run that takes place at specific venues across the world at a specific time every Saturday. The Kimberley race will start at 07:00 at the Rooifontein Game Farm just outside Kimberley (+-3 km from the Cassandra bridge, on the R64) and will take place every Saturday at the same time and place. Each Parkrunner must register for free at www.parkrun.co.za before completing their first Parkrun. Call Potgieter on 082-964-1667.

WHAT you drink makes more difference than you think. If someone gave you a cup full of sugar to drink, would you take it? Or would you allow your child to add 14 teaspoons of sugar to their breakfast cereal or beverages? Well, if your child drinks a 500 ml sugary drink, they will consume between 14 to 19 teaspoons of sugar. According to the American Heart Association, children aged four to eight should not consume more than three teaspoons of added sugar per day and adults should limit their intake to six teaspoons daily. If a child drinks only one 500 ml cooldrink containing sugar per day, it adds up to more than half a kilogram of sugar consumed at the end the week. Even though sugar helps to make our diets more palatable and provides glucose for energy and optimal brain function, the problem lies in consuming too much. Sugary drinks are high in kilojoules, but contain little to no fibre, vitamins or minerals needed to sustain a child’s health. Research suggests that drinking kilojoules does not have the same effect on a person’s satiety level compared to consuming the same amount in the form of food. Sugar hits the bloodstream almost instantly and elevates blood sugar levels. High intakes of sugar can contribute to insulin resistance, which is related to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Before allowing your child to consume sugary drinks, consider the following: ) Children who consume a lot of sugary drinks have a higher risk for tooth decay. ) Research studies show that excess sugar supresses immune function which makes children more prone to various diseases.

) Fizzy drinks contain high levels of phosphate. Consuming large amounts of phosphate has a detrimental effect on bone health. ) Fluctuating blood sugar levels are linked with irritability and depression. According to a recent British study, a diet high in sugar is linked to a 58% increase in risk for developing depression. To reduce the amount of sugar in your diet: ) Drink water or milk rather than sugary drinks or sodas. Carrying a water bottle will create a habit of regular water consumption. ) To increase the acceptability, water can be flavoured by adding pieces of fresh fruit (e.g. strawberries, pineapples, cucumber or melons). ) Out of sight out of mind. Children are more likely to drink sugary beverages if it is easily accessible. Rather ensure that low fat milk, water or sugar-free drinks are available. ) Home-made smoothies and drinking yoghurts are a fun way to increase calcium, fibre and vitamin intake. Consuming enough calcium is extremely important during childhood as bones are still being formed. ) Know what you drink by reading labels. The label contains valuable information that can assist you in making healthier choices. Think twice before buying sugary drinks for your children as it may have a much bigger effect on their long-term health than you may realise. Be smart and make every sip count. If it’s about nutrition, ask a dietician. ) Riëtte van Rooyen and Desiré Brand are fourth-year students of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.

NC high schools going digital

AFTER having their faces painted, the children enjoyed cake and cold drinks with their visitors.

Daycare centre spoiled by visit

} Boipelo Mere THINGS are shaping up for the Nthatisi Daycare centre in Warrenton. Under the leadership of Grace Macutwana, the daycare centre has been in existence for three years and is now looking forward to a bright future. Efforts by the founder member, Macutwana, who is also the principal of the centre, to empower herself with ECD level four qualifications, has paid off well as the Magareng Municipality has offered her a business site to set up the centre. She has been operating the centre from her home and started off with only 28 children. This number has now grown to 40. Macautwana said that the growth in enrolments had led her to increase her staff with two more teachers, a cleaner and a chef. “Because of our passion for our work we manage to survive on the crèche fees we receive and share it amongst ourselves for the material, stationery, outdoor material and toolkits for the children,” she added. The centre was blessed earlier this month when officials of First National Bank (FNB) paid them a surprise visit. The visitors reportedly arrived out of the blue on their doorstep with some

cake and goodies to share with the children. According to the principal, the visitors did not only enjoy the cake with the learners, but they made the children’s day by creating a party mood by painting their faces. They also made an assessment of the centre’s needs, and volunteered to return to the centre to paint the walls. According to Shunielle Cloete, one of the visitors, volunteering their services is part of the social responsibilty programme of the Warrenton FNB branch. “We spent at least two hours with the children and we interacted and played games with them before enjoying the cake and drinks. We also do this at various schools around Magareng since it is now expected from all banks,” she said. According to Macutwana, the visitors just showed up and made their day. “It is like they were being send from heaven to lend a helping hand. I can truly not remember making any such request. It was unbelievable. We felt so blessed. It was the first time that we experienced something like this.” She said the centre was still busy applying for funding from the Department of Social Development for daycare and aftercare services.

ALTOGETHER 13 Northern Cape high schools are reported to have joined the Telematics Programme in partnership with the Northern Cape Department of Education and the University of Stellenbosch (US), thanks to funding provided by two of the province’s solar farms. According to a press release issued by Tina Meyer, Droogfontein Solar Power and De Aar Solar Power have contributed over R700 000 to install the satellite broadcast programme for leaners in gr. 11 and gr. 12 at high schools in De Aar, Phllipstown, Kimberley, Barkly-West, Delportshoop, Warrenton, Jan Kempdorp and Hartswater among others. Marion Green-Thompson, Economic Development manager for De Aar Solar Power and Droogfontein Solar Power, was quoted as saying that they would like to provide learners with the opportunity to improve their competency and aptitude in Mathematics and Science, so that they can progress higher in the education chain. “Broadcasts certainly do not replace the teachers or what should be happening in class – it is simply an added support, similar to extra tutorials to better equip learners, most of whom do not have access to funds for additional tutoring,” continued GreenThompson. The statement further highlights the fact that Northern Cape high schools are part of a national network of schools that are benefiting from the afternoon satellite broadcasting of additional lessons that are made from the studio of the Stellenbosch

University’s Telematic Services. The extra classes are all arranged and scheduled by the Western Cape Department of Education, in line with the country-wide curriculum. Learners are able to respond to or put questions to the presenter in studio, via a web platform, or a text message. Through the web platform teachers can also reportedly download all the presentations and other resources. The Education Department also provides workbooks that can be used during the broadcasts. “These direct and interactive television broadcasts reach approximately 107 schools in the Northern Cape, 66 Eastern Cape schools and almost 146 in the Western Cape, and require the installation of decoders and satellite dishes that have been installed at the schools. “A monitoring and evaluation plan is part of this project, which helps the Stellenbosch University to thoroughly analyse learners’ marks, the schools’ context as well as feedback from the learners, teachers and principals about the impact of the programme,” added Meyer. Green-Thompson was quoted as saying in conclusion: “Provisional results of the cohort of learners that commenced on this programme in 2009 shows that only three out of the ten underperforming schools were still underperforming after the 2012 examinations; and of the 75 schools that joined the project in 2010 only 12 are still underperforming.”

TEBOGO MASOPYE is an inspirational man who has never let his disability stand in the way of his success. This 28-year-old chef is paralysed in one limb, but he does not allow this to prevent him from achieving great things in life. Masopye was born in Pretoria, but grew up in Bloemfontein. He hated cooking when he was a teenager – today he is one of the great cooks in the country. He works at the Protea Hotel Central in Bloemfontein where he cooks delicious dishes for hotel visitors. “My mom loved cooking and baking. She used to ask me to assist her in the kitchen with mixing and spicing. This is how my love for cooking developed,” he told Express. “Honestly, cooking was not my cup of tea then. I didn’t know how to cook at all. The only things that I knew how to do then was to make sandwiches, fry eggs, make potato chips, cook pap, and so on.” Masopye completed his diploma in Graphic Design in 2010, but after developing a love for cooking, he realised that he needed to have a qualification to back his talent. He was fortunate to be part of a hospitality programme in Grahamstown in 2011, organised by the Hospitality Youth Initiative (HYI), a project by the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in partnership with the Department of Tourism. “After completing this programme I received a hospitality management certifi-

Health packs promote learning in schools } Boipelo Mere IN an effort to ensure the doors of learning stay open, and in the fight to make education fashionable, the Parks Leburu District of the Young Communist League (YCL) handed out health packs and sanitary towels to learners at the Mogomotsi High School in Warrenton. This was in continuation of the Joe Slovo Right to Learn Campaign. Members made the first handover to the Tshireleco High School in Kimberley earlier this month. According to Modise Letselebe, district secretary of the YCL, the high absenteeism of learners from previously disadvantaged backgrounds – due to a lack of school shoes, health packs and hygiene materials – led to the start of the campaign. “Our Joe Slovo Right to Learn Campaign is ongoing. We, as the district committee, and our branches have resolved to make education fashionable. Corner to corner, site by site, school by school and community to community,” Letselebe said. The YCL has called for continued support in improving school infrastructure in poor communities, to ensure the availability of fullyfunctioning libraries,

computer laboratories with internet access to increase research capacity, enough teachers, improved learner nutrition, well-resourced and functioning laboratories and adequate learner transport. “This will go a long way in ensuring that every child, regardless of class or race, has an equal and non-discriminatory opportunity to succeed. The working class schools between quintiles 1, 2 and 3 should be developed and fully equipped to reach the standard of the upper-ranked schools between quintiles 4 and 5. “We also welcome an increase in the allocation of funds to school infrastructure by our provincial government as announced by our premier, Sylvia Lucas, when she committed herself to focus on school infrastructure and youth development.” Letselebe made a commitment that the campaign against teenage pregnancy, gangsterism, drugs and alcohol abuse would be continued, and that efforts to close liquor outlets that were located next to schools would not be slackened. The members promised to continue visiting schools in the district to provide sanitary towels and health packs to create a environment conducive to learning.

THE Mogomotsi High school in Warrenton was also involved in the programme.

Learners can study further LEARNERS of the Blinkklip, Ratang Thuto and Postmasburg High Schools, who qualified for the Kolomela Scholarship Bursary Programmes, were announced last month. According to Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore’s Kolomela Mine, these scholarship holders will be mentored and suppor-ted in terms of their future studies and careers. This programme is a bridging programme whereby learners have the opportunity to improve their Mathematics, Science and English skills, and re-write matric in these subjects to obtain entry qualifications for university. The Kolomela Mine’s Gert Schoeman, mana-ger: Corporate Communication, said in a statement that 20 learners had been selected from three high schools in Postmasburg from the submissions that had been received. “Kolomela is giving scholarship bursaries to learners to enable them to pursue tertiary studies and to prepare learners for possible employment opportunities. The programme is also aimed at motivating them to study further in Engineering, Surveying and Geology so that they can be a part of the future talent pool for the company,” stated

Schoeman. According to Schoeman, only learners who completed gr. 12 and achieved at least 60% in Mathematics and Science and who have an interest in engineering, geology and surveying qualify. “Emphasis will be placed on their cognitive, emotional and career interest development, as well as on their social support system. This will include items like assisting with study methods, a reading course, as well as English, Mathematics and Science classes to aid their cognitive development as well as classes for emotional development. To develop their career interest, they will go on a mine tour and do career guidance assessments.” Aart van den Brink, general manager of Kolomela Mine was quoted saying: “Investing in education remains a major social development strategy of the Kolomela Mine, as young people are active partners in the development of their communities.” Van den Brink added that a high quality and comprehensive education can build resilience among youths and pave the way for livelihoods that will contribute to the development of their communities.

A MAN found guilty of murder in the Northern Cape High Court last Wednesday (18/03) is due to be sentenced this week. James Siff (42) was tried and found guilty of the murder of Vernon Hugh Kok (49). The case goes back to 18 October 2014 when the accused and the victim were reportedly involved in an argument regarding a televised soccer match. Siff was at his house in Campbell when he was reported to have fatally stabbed the victim with a sheep shear in the chest. He fled the scene, but was arrested the following day in Campbell. He was granted bail after his court appearance and will be sentenced on Wednesday (25/03).

Rapist gets life sentence

THE life sentence handed down to Johannes Gobusamang Taje (28) has been welcomed by the management of the Northern Cape police. Taje was found guilty by the Northern Cape High Court earlier this month on charges of house breaking, murder, and rape involving a 67-year-old woman. He received a life sentence for murder, and 15 years for rape. The sentences will run concurrently. The police stated in a press release that Taje had been accused of breaking into the house of the 67-year-old woman in Ikutseng, Warrenton, on 28 September 2012. The woman was later found raped and strangled by her neighbours, who alerted the police. The police investigation resulted in the speedy arrest of the accused. According to the statement, Judge Violet Phatshoane of the Northern Cape High Court indicated during the sentence that Taje had been aware that the victim was living alone, and that he took advantage of her vulnerability. “Domestic violence is rife in our society and it should not be taken lightly. “Harsh sentences such as this should serve as a deterrent to the perpetrators of such atrocities,” the statement reads. The police revealed that Taje was not a first-time offender – he was convicted for theft in 2009.

Foto: Ilse Watson

Eyes on big Bloemfontein Derby } Sidwell Guduka BLOEMFONTEIN soccer fans should brace themselves for an interesting battle when Roses United cross swords with Mangaung Unite on Friday at the Westdene Sports Grounds, if what team managers from both sides say is anything to go by. Teboho Mokoena of Mangaung and Fresh Mokhele of Roses were at their boastful best this week saying their teams will win this derby match. The Sinki Leshabane-owned side defeated Roses 1-0 in their first round ABC Motsepe League meeting and they will be looking to score a brace of wins over their opponent this season. “It’s going to be a win for us. There is no doubt about it. “We are determined to register our second victory over Roses this season,” Mokoena told Express. “It’s not going to be an easy stroll, though. Roses are a good side and so are we. “Unfortunately they will go home emptyhanded on Friday as we want to collect the three points and close the gap between ourselves and the log leaders,” he said. “It is always an epic Derby battle when we face-off with them. We know what we are up against, what they can do and what we need to do. “They are very good when they are in possession, but we have a plan up our sleeves for them,” he added. Mangaung are motivated after coming from behind to register a 4-3 victory over Galaxy FC at the Clive Solomon Stadium in Heidedal on Saturday 14 March. The Clarens side led 2-1 at interval and they extended their lead early in the second half to make the score 3-1. Mangaung, however, responded with three goals and went on to win the match. “Our boys showed great character to come back. We made some defensive mistakes and we got punished. But the guys responded well; we got three great goals, and we were happy to get the win. That was vitally important for us ahead of the derby. “So we are going to show the same character against Roses,” said Mokoena. Roses, on the other hand, come to this game oozing confidence after defeating Harmony Academy 2-1 at the Bronville Stadium in Welkom this past weekend. “We are unstoppable, we are going to win this game. We don’t want to drop any points at this stage of the season. I don’t think any team will stop us. So Mangaung must come prepared on Friday,” Mokhele commented. “We want to reverse the first round result and improve our position on the log. Our main priority is to win the league. We want to play in Division 1 next season,” he said. There are a few ex-Roses players who now ply their trade at Mangaung. They will be out to prove something to their former team

EYES ON THE BALL: Katleho Mofokeng of Mangaung Unite FC (maroon jersey) is chased by Galaxy FC's Lebohang Rasenyalo during their ABC Motsepe League match at the Clive Solomon Stadium in Heidedal. Mangaung will pin their hopes on Mofokeng when they face Roses United in the Bloemfontein Derby on Friday. Photo: Voight Mokone and some personal rivalries will be doing the rounds between friends. “It is going to be a fascinating match for the fans. We urge them to come in their numbers to the stadium. “They must arrive early as we are expecting a huge crowd,” said Mokhele. While Mangaung are sitting fourth on the log with 35 points after 19 matches, Roses are perched on second position on the table after collecting 44 points after the same number of matches. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00.
