Ex burns house down Mother and baby now have to live with grandmother

} Nkareng Moloi BOTJHABELE. – Sibongile Mkhwanazi (22) was left homeless last Friday after her RDP house had been allegedly burned down by her jealous ex-boyfriend. According to her, she had separated from the father of her 13-month-old daughter early this year. She was shocked when he had returned after such a long absence to burn the house down. She says he arrived like an innocent person who just came to collect his Identity Document (ID). “I was at my grandmother’s house, not far from home, when he arrived and asked for his ID. I gave him a key of the house to go get it and asked my uncle to accompany him. “He told the uncle not to bother and left alone,” she says. Mkhwanazi says while she was waiting for him to return the key, she received a call from the ex-boyfriend. “I ignored his call until he called on my uncle’s phone asking to speak to me. “He told me to go out and see what he had done to my house. I was not sure what he meant. I looked through the window and saw the smoke and flames at my house,” she says. Mkhwanazi says the problem with her boyfriend is jealousy. “What I can tell you is he is jealous. He did not want to see me walking with or talking to other men. “He would beat me up for that. I usually went to the police station to open cases. One day I decided we should stop seeing each other and applied for a court order,” Mkhwanazi says. She is now staying at her granny’s house. She appeals to anyone who can help them renovate the house to come on board. “We have nothing. No clothes, groceries, my ID book and my child’s birth certificate and grant card were all burned to ashes. We are orphans, we have no one to turn to. “We can’t live with my granny forever,” she says. Sgt Mmako Mophiring, the police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and added that the suspect had been charged with arson. “The suspect will appear before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court soon,” he said. ) Give us you view on our Facebook page, Qwaqwa Express Eastern Free State, or send us a comment on the WhatsApp number 060-914-1180.

No outages in towns

} Tladi Moloi

BETHLEHEM. – Job Tshabalala, member of the Moral Committee (MMC) for Finance in the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, said Dihlabeng would not go dark regardless of the municipality owing Eskom millions of rands. “I want to state this clearly to the members of the community and I assure them that the municipality will never experience a blackout. Eskom will never switch us off,” he said. Tshabalala assured the Dihlabeng community that the municipality had found ways of servicing the Eskom account and added that they would make sure that they paid Eskom on time. He spoke at the recent press conference which was held at the Bethlehem town hall. “We’ll service the Eskom account in line with the payment plan that council has adopted,” he said. He said since they had adopted the payment plan, they had not defaulted in terms of the payment plan and that they had paid it as

per agreement. Dihlabeng is one of three municipalities, along with Malutia-Phofung and Ngwathe, in the Free State that owes Eskom money. Last month Eskom left the residents of the three municipalities worried after they had announced that they would cut the electric supply until the municipalities in question had paid the required amount. This outage was planned for midday on Friday, 3 October. The statement resulted into the urgent meeting between Eskom and the provincial government held on the morning of the day which the power was supposed to be cut off. However, an eleventh hour agreement was reached and the electricity supply was not cut off. Tshabalala said they called on all the customers to support them in making sure that the municipality honoured the payment plan. “We need your support. You should pay your accounts on time every month. Our income is dependent on your payment,” he said. Tshabalala said he could not tell

exactly what Dihlabeng owed Eskom at the moment and added that they were waiting for Eskom to send them an account after the

payments that they had already made. “We have raised the issue with Eskom that they were charging us

a huge interest,” he said. Tshabalala said they were hoping to settle the Eskom account as soon as possible.

PHUTHADITJHABA. – The University of The Free State’s (UFS) Qwaqwa Campus students fully understand the crucial role that they must play in empowering and bettering their communities. These future leaders, many of who are training to be teachers, are on an ongoing Literacy Boost Project that is aimed at helping children learn the basic skills in literacy by creating a culture of reading both inside and outside the classroom. It helps children, their parents and broader community to develop interest in reading and to keep them engaged and interested in reading books and using games, songs and stories in literacy lessons. They do this by facilitating workshops for parents in schools and in hospitals with the aim of helping parents help their children to read. This dedicated group of students continue to impart knowledge on how to use materials used on a daily basis at home to help children count and know different colours. Rethabile Mohlabane, one of the students, said: “Every growing child should have a reading corner at home. This is a comfortable place in their homes where they can read and learn things. Reward to solve murder } Tladi Moloi PHUTHADITJHABA. – The Phuthaditjhaba police are offering a reward of up to R100 000 to anyone who might have useful tips on the murder of a student. Book pays homage } Nkareng Moloi MAKONG. – The award-winning author Dr Kgotso Peter David Maphalla released another book after he had retired from writing. Maphalla’s newly published book is titled Haeso ke kae? (Where is my home?). It is Maphalla’s 54th book. “This is the biggest book I have ever written. It consists of 252 pages. It is a very important book for me as I wrote about people like former president Nelson Mandela, the well-respected Nigerian author Chinua Achebe and the late author and journalist Lehlohonolo Mokoena. These are the people whom I admire,” said Maphalla. He said he thought it would be a way of paying his respects to them by writing something about them. “This is to acknowledge their efforts; the fact that they are no longer on this earth does not

Christmas comes early for learners } Nkareng Moloi MAKWANE. – Christmas has come early for the learners of the Machaea Primary School thanks to the House of Glory Global Church (HGGC) that donated uniforms and clothes to 28 learners on Friday. Apostle Samuel Raboteng of the HGGC said this was not a recruiting campaign. “We are doing this because of love. We want to bring hope to our people. It is written in the Holy Book that a blessed hand is a giving hand. So, we are doing God’s will,” he said. He said they were not just preaching love but living it. “We’ll continue helping these children until they leave here for the intermediate phase. They are now our children. If there is any need for their education we’ll come and help them. It is everyone’s responsibility to help the poor,” said Raboteng. According to Motshewa Seleso, the HGGC outreach team leader, the donation was R7 000. Anna Mashinini, the acting deputy principal at the school, said she was very happy with the donations. “We are very happy with what the church has done for our learners. “This will minimize the difference between children from poor and rich families. Most importantly it will boost our learners’ confidence. “I would like to thank the church on behalf of the learners, parents and the school in general,” said Mashinini.

Concert raises funds THE Annual Fezile Dabi HIV/Aids Benefit Concert is set to raise more funds this year as it marks its 11th anniversary in 2014. The Fezile Dabi District Municipality was saddened by the death of former HIV/Aids ambassador Lesego Motsepe in early 2014. She was a South African actress best known as Letti in the popular soapie Isidingo. Aids activist and speaker Criselda Kananda has been appointed as the new ambassador, as announced by the executive mayor of the Fezile Dabi District Municipality, Moeketsi Moshidi. The purpose of the event is to spread awareness about the existence of HIV/Aids and how to be involved in fighting the disease. This includes involving everyone within the community of the district and its neighbouring district municipalities while focusing on community involvement. The programme has attracted more

Learners inspired at awards ceremony HARRISMITH. – Retlametswe “Tlami” Losaba was a big winner at the New Horizon College awards ceremony for 2014, which was recently held in the school hall. Retlametswe scooped the all rounder and dux trophies. During the ceremony, the 2015 RCL of the school were announced. The presidents are Tholakele Moletsane and Thato Sibaiya. Nozipho Ntshangase and Denezulu Khethisa were announced as the RCL hostel presidents. Vernon Botha, the founder of New Horizon College, extended a hearty welcome to everyone on the day. “Never be negative and believe in yourself,” Botha said. Sipho Mnyakeni, who was the motivational

speaker of the day, captured the attention of everyone with his inspiring words. According to him, excellence is only useful when it is used every day. “We build our limitations ourselves,” Mnyakeni said. He reminded those attending that the first step was always the most difficult one. “We shouldn’t expect applause when we want to improve our lives. It won’t help to sit around and wait for people to do things for us. We should make things happen ourselves. Faith should be our foundation and not fear. Our attitude does count. Every decision you make must be consulted by your purpose,” he said.

people to participate since 2004 by reaching and capturing the attention through entertainment whilst educating and raising funds. The main concert returns to the Abrahamsrust Resort in Sasolburg and is set to take place on 29 November bringing you a calabash of Mzansi’s best artists which will feature some of Fezile Dabi’s very own local acts. On 29 October a business breakfast was held to hand over funds raised to beneficiary NGOs. A golf day will be held on Friday at the Vaal De Grace Golf Estate outside Parys. Local businesses will be playing golf with the leadership of the district and the province to raise funds for the initiative. The benefit concert sends out a strong message of local development and aims to make a positive contribution towards a campaign that seeks to drive HIV/ Aids awareness and to raise funds for various NGO’s within the Fezile Dabi District Municipality.

Dihlabeng’s deficits a growing concern BETHLEHEM. – The DA in the Dihlabeng Local Municipality wrote to Nhlanhla Nene, the national Minister of Finance, requesting him to place the municipality under a Section 216 financial administration. Gerrie Roetz, the DA councillor and caucus chair in the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, said the municipality was considered a growing concern. He added that the municipality consistently reported huge deficits over the last three financial years. “In the 2011-’12 financial year the deficit was reported at R59 million. In the 2012-’13 financial year the deficit came in at R82 million. The municipality has in the 2013-’14 financial year ending June in-

curred a deficit of R89 million and is expected to top R100 million by the end of June 2015,” he said. He said in addition the municipality was unable to meet its financial obligations to Eskom owing in excess of R60 million. “At the same time, the municipality continues to ignore austerity measures requested by Minister Nene and to bring expenditure under control. Treasury must place the municipality under financial administration so as to bring it in line with the Municipal Finance Management Act. Dihlabeng is technically bankrupt and needs urgent intervention to ensure that basic services continue to be delivered to communities throughout the municipality.”

NHC going from strength to strength BETHLEHEM. – On Thursday, New Horizon College (NHC) in Bethlehem held its very first annual prize-giving ceremony. On this day the school realized that exactly one year ago the directors of NHC were addressing prospective parents and students in the town hall with a dream and vision to start NHC Bethlehem in 2014. NHC is humbled to say that this dream became a reality with 380 students enrolling in 2014. Much more than NHC could have ever hoped for to open the school with, there is being catered for three gr. KickStart ups job creation THE top 17 national finalists in the South African Breweries’ (SAB) youth entrepreneurship programme, SAB KickStart, have created 98 full- and part-time jobs since the beginning of the year. This is 34 more jobs than in 2013. This comes after the announcement by Statistics South Africa that the country’s unemployment rate has decreased from 25,5% to 25,4% in the third quarter of 2014. However, unemployment among people between the ages of 15 and 35 remains high, falling more than 20% since 2008. Government’s National Development Plan calls for the country to find ways to reduce the alarming levels of youth unemployment and to provide them with more opportunities, and small business has been singled out as playing a key role in creating jobs. SAB KickStart is designed to help address this need to create sustainable jobs through supporting the development of high-impact young entrepreneurs. The programme’s efforts are focused on instilling a culture of entrepreneurship among young South Africans; offering leading start-up development support to promising small business; investing in the creation of a quality pipeline of entrepreneurs in core industries and sectors; developing and entrenching a thriving ecosystem of support for the development of business ideas while bridging the enterprise development

offering gap for start-up businesses. The 2014 SAB KickStart finalists were selected from a group of 60 entrepreneurs shortlisted to participate in the programme following an intensive two-week business training workshop where they had learnt how to develop a bankable business plan and other essential business skills. SAB KickStart incorporates the development of a growth strategy for each business following a needs analysis. This is used as the basis of the 12-month long programme of business development support and includes individualised business mentorship for each of the finalists, as well as grant funding for their business. “The year-on-year increase in job creation by our young SAB KickStart finalists is an encouraging indication that our model of outcomes-based business training, grant funding and comprehensive business development support has potential to establish strong small business,” says Refentse Shinners, SAB enterprise development manager. The top five entrepreneurs will be announced in mid-November. In selecting the winners, an independent panel of judges considers the overall business performance, business sustainability and its potential, and the effective implementation of growth strategies in the SAB KickStart mentorship and business development phase.

MOEDING. – “You just have to take your dreams to God. He is the one who will open all the doors wherever you go. You cannot achieve great things without God.” Those were the words of advice from Past. Lefu Maine of the Spiritual Healing House Ministries International in Qwaqwa. Maine spoke at a gr. 9 farewell function and a motivational session that was held

on Friday at the Pheta Intermediate School in Moeding Village, Qwaqwa. Maine urged the outgoing students to stay focused like an eagle, and added that they had to first focus on writing their exams. “This is just a farewell function. You don’t have to change anything. You must stay focused like an eagle, fly high, eat fresh food and prepare for your examination,” he said.

He said they should make sure that they held Pheta’s flag high. Fihliwe Nhlapho, a gr. 9 learner, said she was glad for the motivation ahead of the exams. “This is our farewell function and we would like to thank the management of the school for this. We’ll miss our teachers but I am proud to say they have prepared us for any storms that we have to weather,” she said.

Setsoto Dlamini, one of the outgoing students, said he was going to fly high regardless of what came his way. “I’ll make sure that I keep on doing everything that I was taught by my teachers until I finish gr. 12,” he explained. After the motivational session which was held in the school hall, the learners and their teachers left for the Lala Nathi Guest House in Harrismith where the party began.

Court stories unobtainable IT has always been my mission to get the interesting stories from court to the people because I am sure they would love to read about what is happening behind those walls. I thought that would also give them a taste of what is happening in court and in the process, maybe even discourage some young criminals from doing wrong. It has become difficult but I keep on trying. I have always felt like I am fighting the devil without a weapon. To get stories from the Bethlehem and Qwaqwa Magistrate’s Court has always been a nightmare. I always go there without much hope. If they don’t stop you from entering with your camera, they

My view Tladi Moloi Editor of Express Eastern Free State tell you that you need permission from the accused if you want to take their photo. To be fair, I know that the people in court are more educated than I. They might tell you about laws that I have never heard of, but if we at all times have to ask the accused for their photo, will it be possible? Never. They won’t allow us to do that. Asking for the photo of a person who had raped a 2-year-old child. Can I take your photo for the newspaper?

Come on, people. Please help us to make our job easier. We know that we do not have to take photos during the proceedings. I know you might be too busy to read the daily newspapers but I think the Sunday papers show photos of people outside court. I would like to know how they manage that – do they follow similar rules? I know the Bethlehem Court gave me the chance to take photos twice. Could Qwaqwa do this? Yes, they did once years ago. What has changed?

I’m fighting the devil without a weapon. Getting stories from court has always been a nightmare. Harrismith is a nice place. The hospitality there is overwhelming. They give the media a room to do their job in. I do not think they are doing that because they are stupid. They know people want to know what is happening in our courtrooms. So my humble plea to our courts is this: Please help us to make our job easier. We are doing this for our people. I hope you cooperate next time. I salute you, until we meet again.

ANC glory days drawing to an end ALFRED MOSIA, Bohlokong, Bethlehem: THE day of reckoning is fast closing in for South Africa’s ruling party, the ANC. Even to the die hands the writing mene mene tekel Upharsin is on the wall. Even people who were saying they were aware of the mistakes

the ANC is making, but when it came to voting they had no options but to vote for the ANC. After all, people do make mistakes, eventually the ANC which will remain the only organisation that fought for the liberation of the black man against the evil system designed by the white man. It will repent and everyone will enjoy the freedom which only the ANC fought for. Everyone of us who tried to enlighten our people that the ANC is lying and that it is perpetuating a policy of divide and conquer. We were labelled sell-out’s and anti-revolutionary. Some people

had been kicked out of the movement and some even killed. But I want to be quoted saying evil cannot triumph over truth. I have registered an appointment with the mayor of the Dihlabeng Local Municipality many moons ago. I cannot recall the number of times each day I go into the mayors office with enquiries. The receptionist says “your appointment is highlighted, sir, to show that it is urgent”, but then nothing occurs. I met the mayor one day in Bohlokong. He promised to give me a call on the Monday, but weeks have gone past without a

call. I have since learned patience, long suffering and endurance. Hence, I am saying to all the residents of Dihlabeng who are fed up with the ill-disciplined ANC-led government come forth, let us join forces to call them to order. They are failing us so they must step down. The time has come and past for the ANC to announce home owners, in Vogelfontein’s, Vulindlela Extension. There is no progress towards the completion of those houses because as usual the ANC, conducts its business in an unorthodox manner. Watch this space for your name, may be in the municipal elections.

SA hopes for win } Teboho Setena SOUTH AFRICA will host Sudan in the African Nations Cup return leg qualifier on Saturday, 15 November, hoping to secure a win which will be significant to ensure they accomplish their mission. The all-important match against Sudan will be staged at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, preceding the final qualifier fixture against Nigeria on 19 November at the newlybuilt Ibo International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The eagerly-awaited encounter against Sudan is scheduled to start at 15:00. Safa decided to shift it to KwaZulu-Natal, deeming it a fitting tribute to the slain captain of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates, Senzo Meyiwa. The goalkeeper was gunned down on 26 October during a horrific robbery in Vosloorus at the house of his mistress and singer and actress Kelly Khumalo. Meyiwa was buried at his home in Umlazi on 1 November. Ephraim Shakes Mashaba, Bafana Bafana’s head coach, pointed out that qualifying for the 2015 edition of the continental showpiece would be a fitting tribute for Meyiwa, who captained the national team in all four qualifier matches. Mashaba is set to announce the new captain to lead Bafana Bafana in their mission to qualify for the prestigious continental championship. South Africa are vying for a spot in the 2015 edition of the continental championship which is currently in doubt after the hosts Morocco requested a postponement due to fears of Ebola. Morocco want the tournament postponed to June next year due to fears of the possible spread of the Ebola virus, which has caused almost 5 000 deaths in West Africa. In the first leg played away, Bafana Bafana emerged victorious, hammering Sudan 3-0. This was the team’s first win under new mentor Mashaba with the second win away a 2-0 upset against the Congo, who after defeating Nigeria 3-2 were hot favourites in Group A. A win for Mashaba’s warriors over Sudan in the return leg is crucial in securing a bet at the forthcoming continental showpiece. A win for Bafana Bafana in Saturday’s game will mean they will need a point against defending champions Nigeria in the qualifier return leg on 19 November, starting at 18:00 South African time. Nigeria drew goalless with Bafana Bafana in the first leg of the qualifier fixture played at the Cape Town Stadium in September.

Mosimane rues lost chances PITSO MOSIMANE, head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, has termed football a “cruel game” following Mamelodi Sundowns’ 0-1 Telkom Knockout semifinal defeat to Platinum Stars on Sunday afternoon. The Brazilians dominated the match, but were undone by Eleazar Rodgers’ 50thminute goal at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium. Mosimane accepted he must carry some of the blame, but also pointed to a number of gilt-edged chances missed by his players.

FIRED: Tom Saintfiet, the Free State Stars mentor, was sacked after the 5-2 hammering by Polokwane City at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Wednesday.

Stars sack Saintfiet } Tladi Moloi

BETHLEHEM. – Free State Stars have confirmed the sacking of Tom Saintfiet and announced that Kinnah Phiri will take over as the interim coach. In a statement released by the team, Ea Lla Koto says they have mutually terminated its contract with Saintfiet. Saintfiet joined the club at the beginning of the 2014-’15 season. “We have had a meeting with the coach this morning and both parties agreed that after a string of poor results it would be best for both parties to part ways in an effort to try and remedy the current situation,” the statement reads. “Kinnah Phiri will be the interim coach until we make further announcements and the rest of the technical team and playing personnel remain the same. “We wish Tom Saintfiet everything of the best in his future endeavours and we wish that things could have turned out differently, but such is the nature of football,” the statement says. Meanwhile, KickOff.com has reported that Saintfiet said he had no hard feelings after being sacked by Stars. The Belgian was relieved of his duties the day after the humiliating 5-2 home defeat to Polokwane City, and after only ten games in charge. Still, Saintfiet was gracious as he departed, saying he wishes the club all the best. “I don’t want to comment too much about the issue, but I loved working with the players, the technical team and the medical team,” he told KickOff.com. “We had a good game against Polokwane City and created 12 clear-cut chances in the first half, but at the end of the match the result was shocking.” Saintfiet adds: “It was a mutual decision . . . the club was in 11th position and the goal was to be in the top eight. “We were three points behind Wits and Orlando Pirates who are fighting for the championship, but there was nothing we could do with the result, which was unexpected yesterday. “The team has good players, there is quality, and I am sure they will continue doing well in the league this season.” – Additional reporting by KickOff.com

“It’s a cruel game. One chance, one break, nothing else. They score and the rest is history. I can’t talk about the chances that Mame Niang missed. Sometimes it’s difficult for coaches. But what can we say, it’s our life, it’s our job, we need to absorb it and start again,” Mosimane said. “At the end of the day I have to take responsibility. “I am the head coach, so the buck stops with me.” – KickOff.com

Defending champs ready for marathon } Tladi Moloi GOLDEN GATE. – Chabeli Nyelimane from Botshabelo near Bloemfontein and Manti Mabizela from Qwaqwa are the defending champions of the Working for Water Qwaqwa/Golden Gate Half-marathon. They won the marathon last year, for the male and female divisions respectively. It remains to be seen if the duo will be able to defend their titles on Saturday when the athletes go on the road to battle for the championship title. The South African National Parks (SANParks), together with the Department of Environmental Affairs

and Setsing Super Spar, will host the Working for Water Qwaqwa/Golden Gate Half-Marathon on Saturday, at the Basotho Cultural Village in the park. The marathon will start at 06:00 and end at Setsing Super Spar in Qwaqwa. Divhani Maremba, the regional communications manager (Northern Region), said the marathon aims to improve the well-being and health of its surrounding communities. Working for Water is part of SANParks vision of “connecting to society”. “It is a follow-up to the successful marathon held last year and this year it promises to be even bigger,”

she said. “This is a great opportunity for us to engage with the community and beneficiaries of our different programmes with the main purpose of encouraging them to participate in sports as well as taking their health matters seriously,” said Sithembile Mhlophe, park manager. There are two main races, the 5 km fun run and the main race which stretches over 21 km. “Different prizes are up for grabs on the day and registration forms can be obtained at the Setsing Super Spar or at the Golden Gate Highlands Park by contacting Richard Ubisi on 058-255-0925,” she said.
