Man stabs young boy

Attacks fleeing seven year old to steal cellphone

} Tladi Moloi BETHLEHEM. – A seven-year-old boy from Bohlokong near Bethlehem who was nearly killed for a cellphone is recovering well at home after he was allegedly stabbed in the back by an attacker who wanted a cellphone. He was allegedly stabbed last Wednesday afternoon while trying to save his 12-yearold cousin’s cellphone. Apparently six children, four boys and two girls, were playing at the football field near the Mashudu church when an unknown man approached them. According to the 12-year-old boy, who came home carrying the younger one in his arms, the man came to them after they had refused to go to him. “He started by calling us saying we should come and fetch a bicycle. We refused. We could not go to him because we did not know him. He approached us and asked me what time it was. I kept quiet. We fled the scene and the man chased us,” he said. He said while they had been running, he had dropped his phone and the seven year old had picked it up. Unfortunately the attacker caught up with him and stabbed him. ”He caught him and stabbed him in the back immediately after he had picked up the phone. After that he left him bleeding and ran away with the phone,” the 12-yearold boy said. Mashabalala Motloung (31), the mother of the 12-year-old boy, said her child was still traumatized after the incident and added that he could not write Sotho and Natural Sciences for his final examination a day after the incident. “He came home carrying the young boy in his arms just like Hector Peterson was carried. He was, however, stopped by passers-by on the road who quickly called the ambulance,” she said. The injured boy was rushed to the Phekolong Hospital for treatment. Motloung said he was discharged the same day after the wound had been stitched up. She said they had gone to the Bethlehem Police Station to open a case and had later taken the older boy to the social workers for counselling. Sgt. Mmako Mophiring, the police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and added that a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm had been registered.

MASHABALALA MOTLOUNG points to the wounds that a 7yearold boy had sustained during an alleged attack.

All criminals, watch out } Tladi Moloi

Bohlokong fed up with Dihlabeng } Tladi Moloi

BETHLEHEM. – The community of Bohlokong near Bethlehem is enraged and wants answers from the executive mayor of the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, Tjhetane Mofokeng. Bohlokong has been one of the quieter municipal districts, because its community members normally shy away from service delivery protests. But not anymore. This year alone, the Dihlabeng Local Municipality has witnessed one if not two protest marches. This time the Bohlokong community promises a big march. They will march to the municipal headquarters of Friday and will hope for a positive response from the mayor, Nkosi Mafilos, the march organiser and the leader of Leihlo La Setjahaba Rainbow, said. Mafilos told Express Eastern Free State that they were expecting about 5 000 people to join the march. He said they had heard enough from the municipality – a municipality for which the people did not come first. “We have stayed quiet for a long time hoping they would come to us and do the right thing. We now need answers from the mayor,” he said. Mafilos said they had already submitted

a memorandum of demands to the Office of the Executive Mayor and added that on Friday they would be going there to get a response on what they had written in the memorandum. “We have already given them our memorandum. We don’t just need answers – it has to be constructive feedback. “If we are not happy with the answers, we will picket until they give us the correct answers,” he said. Mafilos said they also wanted the appointment of the new municipal manger to be reviewed. Among the demands listed on the memorandum were that they wanted the criteria used to allocate the sites in Vogelfontein to people from Selahliwe, an informal Settlement in Bohlokong. “People of Ward 6 who occupy the land illegally should be removed as per court order because it will be fruitless if they are not removed. The expensive legal costs to have them removed must also be covered or paid for. We demand a report of the Masikhulume budget and expenses with immediate effect. “Conflict caused by the municipality between church ministers by allocating them illegal sites such as community parks should cease. The municipality should make sure the issue is resolved,” the memorandum read.

PHUTHADITJHABA. – Crime is rife in the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality – especially in Qwaqwa. This is a big concern to the municipality and the South African Police Service (SAPS). In making sure that crime is reduced within the municipality and that people can walk freely on the street without fearing for their lives, the municipality has invested R40 million in closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. A total of 30 cameras was placed in Kestell, Harrismith and Qwaqwa. Apparently these were installed in 2010, but they have not been working. The system for the use of these CCTV cameras was launched on Tuesday at the Fire Department in Mandela Park, Qwaqwa. Here a monitor showing live what is happening where is mounted. According to Vusi Tshabalala, executive mayor of the municipality, the cameras are aimed at helping to reduce crime, which is now out of control in this municipal area. “There are 30 cameras in Kestell, Qwaqwa and Harrismith. They were installed mainly in the areas where crime is a concern,” Tshabalala said. “We know that Freedom Square has been turned into something which I don’t want to talk about. You will find 55-year-old men holding the hand of 14-year-old girls.” Tshabalala said he was happy that they had launched the CCTV system at this time of the year. “We know that crime always shoots up during the festive season, but we believe that we will see very little this year and in many years to come. “We will zoom in on the criminals this time and they will go to jail,” he said. He said they were going to hire people to monitor the cameras. They are planning three shifts of 20 people per group, that adds up to 60 people in total.

‘There are 30 camer as in Kestell, Qwaqwa and Harri smith. They were in stalled mainly in the areas where crime is a concern.’ – Vusi Tshabalala, executive mayor of the MalutiaPho fung Local Munici pality “We are going to spend more money to install more cameras. We want people to live freely in this municipality. “We are going to work together with the SAPS. We are looking forward to signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with them,” Tshabalala said. Thulani Ntuli, the station commander at the Phuthaditjhaba Police Station, said the criminals would surely leave Qwaqwa to do their dirty business elsewhere. “We as the SAPS commit ourselves to deploy strategically, because now we have an area of action where we know that criminals will be spotted. We will combat crime,” said Ntuli. “This is an extension of community policing. Thank you for a great investment.” Ntuli said they would work together as a cluster in making sure the system was being used effectively. “We will send police members who will always be vigilant,” Ntuli said.

BETHLEHEM. – Regardless of the challenges and criticism that the Thabo Mofutsanyana Mining Association faced, it stood firm and now it has graduated. It is now called the Free State Mining Association. According to Lerato Mofokeng, chairperson, they changed the name after they had received many proposals from business people within the province. She said they got calls from people in Welkom and Bloemfontein asking to be accommodated. “We could not believe it when people turned out in numbers, asking to join. They told us they had read about the association in Express Eastern Free State. However, they felt that they could not join an association which was only based in Thabo Mofutsanyana. They requested us to accommodate other municipalities,” Mofokeng said. “We knew that it was not going to be easy, but we were up for the challenge.” Mofokeng said after those inquiries they had gone out to meet the relevant people in making the request a reality. “We are going to meet with other municipalities soon to map the way forward. We have also invited Msebenzi Zwane, MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism.” Mofokeng said she was overwhelmed that the association had grown under her leadership.

New road will make life much easier MAKWANE. – Problems of a poor access road to the three neighbouring schools and a clinic in Qholaqhwe, Qwaqwa, are things of the past. This came after the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality completed the project of upgrading it to a paved road. The three schools, Qholaqhwe Intermediate, Lerato Junior Phase and Mathabo Senior Secondary, border this road. Malefu Vilakazi, the Thabo Mofutsanyana District executive mayor, officially launched the road recently and handed it over to the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality. The handing-over ceremony was held in the Qholaqhwe Intermediate School hall and it was preceded by the cutting of the ribbon at the newly-paved road. The Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality’s executive mayor was represented by a member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for women, children and people living with disability, Masetjhaba Lakaje. The handover of the road was accompanied by the donation of laptops to three schools as part of the social responsibility programme and empowering of schools with educational facilities. Handing over the road, Vilakazi said as the district municipality they were grateful that the project was also able to create jobs for local people. “A total of 28 people, which comprised 13 adult males, two adult females, one male youth and 12 female youths, were employed in the projects,” she said. The executive mayor stressed that the completion of the road was another indicator that the government delivered and that it cared for its own citizens. Lakaje said as the local municipality they were happy that a priority need had been met through the construction and completion of the road. “We appreciate the work done by the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality in assisting its own local municipalities. We

Photo: Supplied are also delighted at the work done by the contractor who took less than a year to complete this road,” she said. One of the principals, who received a laptop on behalf of his school, I. Mosethe of the Qholaqhwe Intermediate School, expressed his joy at the completion of the road and also for the donation of the laptop to his school and two other neighbouring schools. He said the newly-paved road would make life easier for them as teachers and learners.

He said it was always a hassle to come to school on rainy days. “Sometimes a child would faint at school and it would be a challenge to rush the child to the clinic or home because of the road. But now we are happy at this achievement by our government,” said Mosethe. The Qholaqhwe road was upgraded from a gravel road to brick-block paving by the municipality to the tune of R6,2 million. The road was upgraded with 1,5 km

brick-block paving and the surface standard included the following: ) Horizontal and vertical alignment of the road in order to eliminate dangerous areas. ) Improvement of the road surface by adding pavement layers and brick blocks. ) Improvement of the drainage facilities through construction of concrete-lined channels and drifts. ) Road markings and finisher.

Man gets 15 years for raping boy } Tladi Moloi FRANKFORT. – Phakiso Motloung (19) from the Opnoop Farm near Frankfort has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment by the Frankfort Regional Court last Tuesday after he had been found guilty on a charge of rape. The rape was committed in December 2013. He was accused of raping a nine-year-old boy of the Opnoop Farm about 15 km from Frankfort. The young boy, who was from

Namahadi near Frankfort, was raped while visiting his mother on the farm. Sgt Mmako Mophiring, the police spokesperson, said the boy had been playing with other children on the day when Motloung intentionally sent the other children to a nearby shop. He remained with the boy. “He then took the boy to his house where he raped him. The boy informed his mother of the incident and they filed a complaint against the alleged rapist at

the Mafube Police Station,” he said. Mophiring said the accused had been kept in custody until the case had been heard and he had been found guilty. “The case was investigated by Sgt Gert de Jager of the Mafube Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit,” he said. “The sentence comes at the right time before the official kick-off of the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children. In the Free State we

have already started by educating the youth, mature and older men in the form of an Imbizo Ya Madoda which was launched in August 2014 at Bothaville. This is where men are motivated by religious people to live by moral values. The young and mature men get to know the word of God and what is the expectation on marriage and life in general including their traditional values,” said the Free State provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Thabethe Mpembe.

‘The sentence comes at the right time before the official kickoff of the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children.’ – Sgt Mmako Mophir ing, police spokesper son.

Hard work pays off } Thabo Mokoena

THIBELLA. – “Stars are created to shine, even when the clouds are there, but they will keep on fighting to shine.” That was the motivation from Malefetsane “Nnake” Mtshali of the Masemola Memorial United Church to the Thibella Intermediate School award winners during the awards ceremony at the Thibella Community Hall last Thursday. Mtshali said winning an award should mean a lot to everyone and added that that should not be taken lightly because it was achieved through hard work. Moeketsi Potsane, the principal, said he was very happy that they had hosted the awards ceremony regardless of the challenges they were faced with at the school. Potsane said the annual awards ceremony was aimed at motivating learners. “We believe that this will play a

pivotal role in their examination. I am sure they will all be hoping for the best when we issue them with their report cards at the end of the year,” he said. He said he wanted to thank all the parents for their support throughout the year. “We have been without a Natural Sciences teacher for a month now but the parents never complained. Some teachers have retired and we could not depend on them. But through the support of the other teaching staff and parent, we have made it thus far,” he said. Malakoane Dineo (13), a gr. 7 learner, said she was very happy to be one of the award winners. “My secret is to keep quiet and read my books. I know if I do that I will have reason to celebrate later. My advice to my fellow learners is that they should make friends with their books. They will reap what they sow,” she said.

Graduation made extra special } Nkareng Moloi

PHUTHADITJHABA. – The Tataisong Primary School hosted its gr. R graduation ceremony at the Basotho Cultural Village on Friday. A total of 135 learners graduated on the day. Over 300 parents accompanied their children to the graduation. Jerry Maya, principal, said he was happy that the ceremony was a success. “I really want to thank the staff and the parents for this success,” Maya said. When asked why he took the graduation to the Basotho Cultural Village, he said that the school wanted to offer an experience. “We took this ceremony to the Basotho Cultural Village because we wanted to promote tourism. It was the first experience of this venue to some of the parents, as they

Also, to have a chance to discuss their children’s performance with educators.” Maya said they wanted to build a great partnership between parents and educators. “If we could manage that, we know that learners would perform at their best at school, knowing that there would be no room for lying since the parents would have access to communicate straight with the teachers.” Malonya Mofokeng, one of the parents, said she was very happy to witness her daughter graduating. “I am so happy with the initiative of the school, because I met my daughter’s educator in a different atmosphere. Grant SMS scam exposed THE South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has uncovered an SMS scam directed at beneficiaries of social grants. Through this scam beneficiaries are sent an SMS requesting and thanking them for providing their details. A reference number and a due date are also provided. Sassa wishes to assure the public that it will never request grant beneficiary details by SMS. Sassa has all details of every beneficiary of social grants in its records and will therefore not send an SMS to

demand these. All beneficiaries are strongly advised not to respond to any SMS fraudulently issued in the name of Sassa. The public has to report such incidents to the police. Virginia Petersen, the CEO of Sassa, has reiterated that “Sassa remains committed to eliminating any form of fraud or corruption involving social grants”. She further called on the public to work together with authorities in helping to expose fraudsters.

Sredojevic an option FREE STATE STARS may hire Milutin Sredojevic as their new head coach. Ea Lla Koto parted ways with the Belgian Tom Saintfiet recently after management became increasingly concerned with what they described as a “string of poor results”. In fact, KickOff.com first reported in June about the Serbian possibly joining Stars, but Saintfiet got the nod in the end. However, Sredojevic, who currently coaches the Ugandan national team, is back in the picture as far as the Stars job is concerned, and with his contract with Uganda coming to an end in December, he

is apparently in a position to accept Stars’ offer. “Initially, they wanted him at the beginning of the season, but at that time he wanted to focus on coaching Uganda and qualifying for the 2015 Afcon, but things have changed since then because Uganda failed to qualify,” a source told KickOff.com. “They are talking to him at the moment so there is a good chance he may join Free State Stars,” he added. Stars’ general manager, Rantsi Mokoena, was not available for comment. Kinnah Phiri is currently coaching the side. – KickOff.com

MOEKETSI SEKOLA, the Free State Stars player in red, will be hoping to score goals and help his team to come home with three points when they lock horns with Chippa United in the Absa Premiership League encounter today at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

BETHLEHEM. – The struggling Free State Stars travel to Port Elizabeth to hunt for three points against a dangerous Chippa United side in the Absa Premiership encounter today at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The kick-off is at 19:30. The two teams go to this encounter with fresh wounds after they both suffered a defeat in the weekend encounters. Ea Lla Koto were walloped 2-0 by Bidvest Wits at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night, while Chippa United were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Bloemfontein Celtic at the Free State Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Bethlehem outfit are sitting third from the bottom of the log, a position which they are no stranger to. Last season, Stars flirted with relegation

The Bethlehem outfit are sitting third from the bot tom of the league, a posi tion which they are no stranger to. for the better part of the campaign and they needed to win their last match of the season against Moroka Swallows to avoid the dreaded axe. The Mike Mokoena-owned side has collected 11 points after 11 games. As for Chippa they will be hoping to add more misery to Stars and surely they would not like to lose two games in a row, especially on their home turf.

The Eastern Cape side started the season like a house on fire beating the likes of Orlando Pirates and holding the freespending Mamelodi Sundowns to a draw. They are currently sitting on position seven on the log table with 17 points after as many games. They trail log leaders Kaizer Chiefs by 12 points. Tonight’s clash will be the second game for caretaker coach Kinnah Phiri, who took over from Tom Saintfiet who was fired a fortnight ago following a string of poor results. Phiri previously had coaching stints at Stars. He was roped in last season to help the side avoid relegation after Themba Sithole had failed to notch up positive results. The Malawian succeeded in his mission. It remains to be seen whether he can wave his magic wand again.
