Party takes ward with nine votes
Dismayed with narrow margin } Tladi Moloi BETHLEHEM. – Although happy with the result in the ward 9 by-election in Bethlehem, the ANC is dismayed with the narrow margin with which they won. The party won by gaining only nine votes more than the opposition. The ANC secured 675 votes while the DA received 666 votes during the by-election which was held on Wednesday (28/01). Other parties which were in contest were the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). They got 37 and 43 respectively. Bereng Francis Mokoena is the new councillor for that ward. He comes in to replace Rasehlomeng Mofokeng who resigned last year. Job Tshabalala, the election team coordinator of the ANC in the Thabo Mofutsanyana region, said the ANC were happy to secure that ward. He added though, that they were not satisfied with the number of votes obtained. “The results show that there was stiff competition between us and the DA. We
would have loved to win the ward with a bigger margin. “People who voted in that ward were not more than 50% and that is a big concern to us. We have done everything possible ahead of the election. “We spoke to all the people in the ward and asked them to come and vote,” he said. Tshabalala said he thought the time at which the by-election had been called did not favour them because some people were working outside of town and some had already left for school. “We are going to talk to the voters now and then. We have also made the new councillor aware that he should have meetings with the community every month. We are going to encourage other councillors to do the same. “We are also going to make sure that we pay serious attention to service delivery,” he said. Tshabalala said they would also keep on knocking on people’s doors with their door-to-door campaigns because that was where they were able to get access to sick people who could not attend meetings. ) Visit Express Eastern Free State to read more stories.

Man sentenced to life in prison after rape } Tladi Moloi BETHLEHEM. – Bali Zacharia Rampai (40) has been sentenced to an effective life term imprisonment by the Bethlehem Regional Court last Monday, 26 January. The heavy sentence comes after he was found guilty of raping a 32-year-old woman who hails from Kgubetswana near Clarens. The incident occurred in June 2013.

The victim was walking in the street alone in the early hours of the morning when she met the accused. He was known to her. The man forced the woman to a nearby donga and raped her. He was arrested the day after she had reported the incident to the police. During the hearing, it was provisionally withdrawn while the court awaited results
from forensic laboratories. The outcome of the case in regional court with positive results from laboratories linked the accused to the crime scene. He was found guilty and sentenced. Det. WO Aye Dlamini of the Bethlehem Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit was on cloud nine after the sentencing. “The sentence is appreciated and the good
work by the investigating officer is appreciated. “But the fact remains that walking alone at night still creates problems and an unnecessary increase in crimes against women and children,” Lt. Gen. Thabethe Mpembe, the Free State police commissioner, said. “We urge people to be aware and create a safe environment for themselves.”

Health care hits the road } Selloane Khalane DR BENNY MALAKOANE, the Free State MEC for Health, has said his department was going to spend R3 million annually for a fleet of vehicles to transport 554 community health workers in the province. According to Malakoane the department has leased 35 vehicles from the Free State government garage with funds from the National Health Insurance grant. He addressed the media during the unveiling of the fleet of vehicles at the Bophelo House in Bloemfontein last week Monday (26 January). The department said transportation was one of the biggest challenges for community health workers who are assigned to service 250 households per worker. Long distances and unfavourable weather conditions were cited as some of the reasons why community health workers struggled to reach all households assigned to them. “The vehicles will ensure that community health workers reach all households in their respective wards,” said Sepela Matela, acting chief director of the district health services. Five of the 36 vehicles have been allocated to the Mangaung Metro, with the Thabo Mofutsanyana District and the Lejweleputswa District allocated ten vehicles respectively. The Xhariep District and Fezile Dabi District will be allocated four and seven vehicles respectively. Malakoane said initially the department had planned to purchase the vehicles to set up

care-givers will also be transported by the fleet. The MEC said community health worker leaders would be responsible for the vehicles.
Belina Sello, a community health worker from Bloemfontein, said the vehicles would assist health workers in reaching all households, regardless of unfa-
vourable weather conditions. Sello, however, raised a concern about the sedans provided, saying some of the roads in rural areas required vans.

Response expected today } Tladi Moloi REITZ. – Today (04/02) is D-Day for the Free State Department of Health, as the Petsana Residents Association demands its response to the petition submitted to the management of the Nketoana District Hospital a fortnight ago. The association gave the department 14 days, which ends today (04/02), to respond to the petition in which it was stated that the community wanted the Nketoana District Hospital back. Majola Dumezweni, the chairperson of the association, said the medical ward of the hospital had been closed and the patients transferred to the Phekolong Hospital in Bohlokong near Bethlehem. Dumezweni told Express Eastern Free State late on Monday (02/02)
that they had been denied permission to march at the section 4 meeting which was held at the Nketoane Local Municipality headquarters on the day (02/02). Kido Nhlapo, chairperson of the meeting, was the one who denied them. “They said they could not risk escorting us to the hospital while the Department of Health had not confirmed who would be available to answer us,” he said. At the time of going to print Express EFS could not get a hold of Nhlapo, as he was not answering his phone. In response to the denial of the march, Majola told Express EFS that they were going to fight the battle until they won. “We went to the municipality’s office on Tuesday (03/02) morning and they agreed with the police that we could hold a public
meeting. “They told us the CEO of the hospital, Tsietsi Makume, would send the response via fax. “They said they would then give it to us to read to the public,” he said. Dumezweni said they could not wait to get their answers. “We want the response. If we don’t get a positive response, we will go back and plan a way forward,” Dumezweni said. He said a section-four meeting had to be postponed on Friday (30/01), because no one from the department had turned up for the meeting. “We invited them to the meeting, but they never came. “These people are taking us for a ride, but come Wednesday, we will show them that we mean business and we are fighting for people’s lives here,” said Dumezweni.

Mafereka called in to rescue Maluti } Tladi Moloi PHUTHADITJHABA. – The National First Division (NFD) outfit Maluti FET College has appointed Jonny “Raps” Mafereka as the head coach. Mafereka, the former Moving Spurs FC mentor, has joined Maluti to replace Morena Ramorebudi, who joined their arch-rivals, African Warriors, at the beginning of this year. He started with his coaching duties on 26 January. Mafereka guided Spurs in the Safa Free State Vodacom League, now the ABC Motsepe League, for four seasons. He will be assisted by former Chippa United and Polokwane City player, Tshepo Tomanyane. The duo is faced with the huge task of guiding the team away from relegation. Mafereka is adamant that they will achieve that, as they are equal to the task. When he joined Spurs, he was faced with the same situation. The team was left with ten games and with his coaching abilities and tactics he succeeded. Maluti finds itself at the bottom of the log, with eight points in 16 games. They are four points behind Garankuwa United. Their next test comes on 11 February, when they welcome Santos at the Charles Mopeli Stadium in Qwaqwa. The kick-off is at 15:30. Mafereka said he was happy to be trusted with guiding a team of Maluti’s calibre. He said he would make sure that he did not disappoint.

Photo: Tladi Moloi This is his first experience of coaching in the NFD stage and it is an open secret that he has come at a bad time, when he is expected to save the team from drowning. However, Raps told Express Eastern Free State that he knew what was expected of him. He added that he had saved a team from relegation before, even though the stages were different. “I am used to pressure. Actually, a coaching job is all about that, even if you’re not at the bottom of the league,” Mafereka said. He said he would save the team. “Anything is possible. The management of the team and the players are positive and that is what will help us going forward.” Raps said he was not going to make any changes in the team. “I am going to work with the
players who have been with the team. It would not be a good idea to add new players, because they might take time to adjust,” he said. Fourteen Monnanyane, the team manager, confirmed the appointment. “Yes, we have appointed him as our coach. He will work with Tomanyane as his assistant.” Monnanyane said Raps and Tomanyane were expected to guide the team out of the relegation zone. “We believe in them, that is why we gave them that responsibility,” he said. ) Do you think Jonny “Raps” Mafereka and Tshepo Tomanyane can save Maluti FET College FC from relegation? Group ecstatic about nomination } Sidwell Guduka THAPELO MOHOLO, a lead vocalist of The Fraternity, said he was ecstatic about his group’s nomination to one of the music industry’s biggest spectacles – the Metro FM Music Awards. The Bloemfontein-based hip-hop group has been nominated for the remix of its song Bheka Mina Ngedwa, the song that has been receiving high rotation on both local and national radio stations. The Fraternity will compete in the Best Remix of the Year category against Cassper Nyovest ft. Talib Kweli (Doc Shebeleza Remix), Uhuru ft. Donald, Speedy, Wiz Kid (Ungowami Remix), Duncan ft. AKA, Professor, Mampitsha (Tsiki Tsiki Remix) and Naim Kay (Ngiyavuma Remix). “We are ecstatic as a group. We feel blessed and humbled. This is like a dream come true for us. “We have always watched these awards on television so it feels great to be recognised and appreciated for the work that we do,” Moholo told Express. “We didn’t get nominated by default. We have made a diligent effort to ensure that the song was brilliant. I really believe that we worked hard on this album because we wanted to make our mark in the music industry. I work with amazing people and I want to promise the people of the Free State that our best is yet to come,” he said. Moholo said his group fancied its chances at this year’s highly-contested awards. “Any artist would want to go home with an award after being nominated, so to win it would be great. We are calculating our chances of scooping this award. “We are competing against the likes of Cassper Nyovest and AKA in our category. They are strong competitors, but I’m positive we will win it. If you look at them they are also nominated in other categories. So their votes will be spread and that

Asked what was the secret of the success behind the song Bheka Mina Ngedwa, Moholo said there was no secret, but they worked hard to ensure that their music was appreciated by their fans. “The response has been amazing. We truly appreciate the support we get from our fans. They have a deep understanding of our music and we are nothing without them,” he said.
Moholo has revealed that they had launched a campaign in an attempt to get more votes that would eventually win them the award. “We are visiting high schools across the province to ask learners to vote for us. Not only do we want to win this award for the people of the Free State, we actually want to put our province on the map. So we urge every single person in the province to vote for us,” he appealed.

Service delivery non-existent IT is really disturbing that every month we hear of service delivery protests and how the community vandalised property as well as state-owned buildings. Let’s bring this home. I stay in Bohlokong and the truth of the matter is that we lack service delivery. The municipality is reactionary and not preventative. There is a spot near BFT Chisanyama where most of these so-called municipal officials indulge and show off their expensive cars and deep wallets. This spot is between the four traffic lights in Delivers Street. It pains me to see how this section of the tar road is eroding and it is hard for vehicles to pass.
Regenesis Eric Motloung Maybe the reason it has not been fixed, is because it is fun and adventurous for these officials to drive their 4x4s there because for months there has been no service. The rest of Bohlokong has bad tar roads and speed humps that damage car bumpers. We are driving in a township that is losing its value daily and every time it
rains, it shows just how bad our storm water drainage system is. Does this mean we have qualified people who are public servants, people who do what is expected of them? What do they report in service delivery meetings or is handing out dustbins the only listed form of service delivery? Can we really say the ANC is doing its bit to transform Bethlehem? Where are decent parks in the location? Storm water drainage? Or are we still going to keep mum about pavements that are only being built where officials live? Maybe I should move to Lesotho.

In line with sharing love, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) encourages South African citizens to donate blood. “It can also be a time to show your love to those you may never meet by donating blood and making a difference in the lives of others,” says Vanessa Raju, communications manager at SANBS. January blood stock levels seemed to have dropped to less than one day in some provinces with the national average of two days for most of the month. “We need the public to join the blood donation community and start donating a minimum of four times a year. February is also the month dedicated to healthy lifestyle awareness,” Raju says. “Reports show that in the past five years, there has been an increase in the number of people diagnosed with heart diseases, cancer and various other health-related illnesses.” Lifestyle diseases are triggered by our unhealthy lifestyle choices like smoking, being
overweight, indulging in an unhealthy diet filled with fatty foods and limited fruits and vegetables, limited physical activity and high stress levels. The SANBS supports Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Month and encourages South Africans to start paying attention to problem areas in their health, go for regular medical check-ups and control their stress levels. “Stress has a significant impact on lifestyle illnesses. People need to make time for regular exercise, spend time doing things they enjoy, learn some relaxation techniques and just reward themselves with some time to relax,” says Raju. “Although the ‘silent killers’ can be prevented, for the already diagnosed, successful treatment is a debilitating matter of life and death. “The treatment of the majority of these diseases requires blood transfusions. The increase in affected patients means an increased demand for blood donations,” Raju warns. People who meet the minimum requirements are encouraged to become regular blood donors. Donors can visit the SANBS branches to donate blood during the following hours: Mondays: 10:00 – 16:45, Tuesdays: 09:00 – 18:00, Wednesdays: 09:00 – 16:45, Thursdays: 09:00 – 16:45, Fridays: 09:00 – 16:45 and Saturdays: 09:00 – 13:00.
Government needs to listen REV. THEUNIS BOTHA, leader of the Christian Democratic Party (CDP): IT is high time that the ANC listens to expert opinion when it comes to its policies. It is an exercise in futility to send an elaborate contingent to Davos to attempt to mesmerise investors into investing in South Africa, and then, the very next week, making policies that fly in the face of promises made to investors. The fact that organised agriculture says it is a shame that the ANC does not understand farming, and therefore makes ridiculous decisions, is a case in point. There have been numerous opportunities where organised agriculture has exchanged facts with government, but it seems as though the ANC is conveniently politically deaf. The decision that deployed cadres must be suitably qualified, flies in the face of effectiveness. It often happens that a person with the right qualifications cannot do the work, or does not care to do the work. The most suitable person, irrespective of political affiliation or background, should be appointed to make the country work.

No regrets for Mashaba SHAKES MASHABA has insisted he was right to raise the hopes of South Africans when he suggested Bafana Bafana was prepared to go all the way to the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. On arrival back home on Saturday (31/01) the national team coach reflected on his earlier promise. Mashaba was quoted before the tournament saying he had packed enough clothes until 8 February, the day of the Afcon Final in Bata,
Equatorial Guinea. However, Bafana were knocked out in the group stage. He insists he does not regret his comment. “There is no way a commander can say to his team that they are going to be massacred. We always say, let’s prepare ourselves to go and fight, which is what our boys did,” Mashaba says. “We wanted to win that cup, but things didn’t go our way. As head coach, there is no doubt in my
mind that we were mentally and physically ready for the Afcon. After the qualifiers, we realised anything was possible and that is why we were saying we were going to win it. “As the technical team, we still don’t believe we were wrong in setting this goal for ourselves. Some may argue that it was perhaps unrealistic and ambitious and that may be so, but for us it was a challenge.” – KickOff.com

Games learning experience } Tladi Moloi BETHLEHEM. – The Maluti FET College has walloped Super Eagles FC 5-1 and 5-2 respectively in the two friendly games played in the Bohlokong Stadium in Bethlehem on Wednesday. The two games were part of preparations for the National First Division (NFD) campaigners of Maluti ahead of the second round that kicks off next Wednesday after a long break. They were also pivotal games for Eagles FC who is second on the Safa Free State ABC Motsepe log table. They have collected 27 points in 11 games. The Eagles team is one point away from the log leader, Hunters FC.
Maluti was playing under the new mentorship of Jonny “Raps” Mafereka. Mgababa Mantshu, the Eagles’ coach, said playing against Maluti was a blessing to them, because they had learned things that would make them a better team if they could apply them going forward. “Yes, we were beaten by a bigger margin in both games, but we have achieved what we wanted out of those games. “We had a chance to look at some players who have struggled to make it in the 18-man squad. Our level of concentration was not right. We should work on that. “We have been giving away goals in the first 30 minutes of

Coach Mafereka said he was happy with Maluti FET College’s performance. He said he would like to play two to three friendly games before their league encounter against Santos on 11 February at the Charles Mopeli Stadium in Qwaqwa.
“The boys played well and I am happy. “We have managed to score ten goals in two games and that is positive considering the fact that the team has been struggling to hit the back of the net,” he said. Mafereka said they would, however, not get carried away by beating the Eagles by that margin and pointed out that they would have to look at the missed opportunities and the ones scored. “We created more scoring opportunities during both games and if we were clinical we should have scored more. “We will also make sure that we remain tight at the back,” he said.
