MESSAGE FROM THE KCSA VICE PRESIDENT

As the vice president of this year’s 45th Symphony Designers’ Showhouse, I want to welcome all of you to the Showhouse. This project represents the country’s longest continuous fundraising showhouse project in the country, and we are delighted that you are sharing it with us. We know that you will enjoy the spectacular rooms that have been transformed by our chosen designers and landscapers, and we hope that you take home some great ideas and inspiration from the designs you see here. Our Showhouse is, and has always been, a charitable benefit for the Kansas City Symphony. Not only does the Symphony offer wonderful concerts for our enjoyment but it also brings music to young people and underserved audiences throughout our region through its inspiring youth concerts and outreach programs, which KCSA especially supports. There are many dedicated and generous people who make this Showhouse possible. I speak for the board and officers of the Kansas City Symphony Alliance in thanking the kind owners of this house, who have allowed us to take over and transform their home during the last six PHOTO BY CAT SZALKOWSKI

months. I also want to thank all of the members of my Showhouse committee for their hard work, constant loyalty and incredible dedication to this project. In addition, we especially thank our inspirational designers, who invest a great deal of creativity, ingenuity, imagination and just plain hard work in bringing you the inventive designs that you see here. We also owe our heartfelt gratitude to each and every volunteer who helps staff our Showhouse during the months preceding the opening and throughout the entire public homes tour. Not a single person involved in this project gets paid, and their volunteer effort is truly monumental. We hope you follow along in this program book as you take your tour of our house. Please patronize our designers and advertisers. Ultimately, they are the people who make the Showhouse possible, and to them we owe our deepest appreciation. Thanks again. Please enjoy your visit and return to enjoy the Showhouse again with your friends!

HOUSE HISTORY The first owner of the house was Fred Hoose and his wife, Alice, with their two children, Frances and Clinton. Fred was vice president and treasurer of the Norris Grain Company, but his success was delayed by problems with the economy, which caused him to start over as a bookkeeper for several grain companies in Chicago and Milwaukee before being sent to Kansas City, where he became a member of the Board of Trade in 1902. Fred was active in Republican politics and spoke at the 1936 Republican National Convention in support of Alf Landon. After retiring from the grain business, Fred and Alice moved to Los Angeles in 1938 to pursue his lifelong passion for acting. His cousin was Holbrook Blinn, an accomplished stage actor. Fred was mainly a character actor and appeared in films with John Wayne and Clark Gable, who was one of his favorites. He was one of Clark Gable’s henchmen in Any Number Can Play. The longest ownership of the house was by John and Marion Kreamer with their children. John and Marion were renowned for their volunteer activities on behalf of many Kansas City charities. John was the managing partner of Gage & Tucker as well as a leader of the Missouri Republican Party and one of the earliest supporters of U.S. Senators Jack Danforth and Kit Bond. Fred E. Hoose, Grand Potentate, 1921 Courtesy of the Ararat Shrine of Kansas City, Mo.

John and Marion met at Harvard when John was attending law school. Marion was the daughter of Carl Enggas, one of Kansas City’s most prominent lawyers, but he did not join his father-in-law’s firm. “He wanted to make it on his own,” Marion said. She was a civic and philanthropic force in her own right and said, “He supported me in everything I did. I could never have done it without him. It was mutual. I think we were both interested in what the other was doing.” They lived in the house from the late ’60s until John’s death in 1992 and Marion’s death in 1993. Donald and Margaret Austin followed the Kreamers and did some remodeling, including adding the overhang in the kitchen. They still reside in Kansas City, where Margaret is active in the Symphony Women’s Association. Earl Hannum Devanny and Elizabeth Devanny owned the house in the early part of 2000 when he was employed by the Cerner Corporation. Through the generosity of the current owners, A. L. and Susan Summerlin, the tradition of the Symphony Designers’ Showhouse continues.

Upon entering the foyer, guests are welcomed by a dark, smoky-colored space. Matching walnut chests flank the front door. Above them, Venetian mirrors reflect light from solid crystal lamps. Pearlized yet beautifully subtle grass cloth serves as backdrop for both floors of the grand entry hall. A large antiqued and gold Venetian mirror hangs over another magnificent walnut chest. Both contemporary and classic art line the walls leading upstairs, RENDERING COURTESY OF KNAPSTEIN DESIGN

John Rufenacht Associates teamed up with Scalamandre and the homeowner to provide a living room that represents the original architecture of the house. The interior is brought forward in time by modern lines of the cocktail tables and original art, while a nod to the past is found in the antique French empire chest. The custom-designed mirror-clad lambrequins and side mirrors give a glimpse into the era the house was built. The serene aqua color palette, a tribute to the homeowner, adds color to the room in unique weaves and textiles of Scalamandre on custom-designed frames. The paper design on the ceiling completes the design story of the room. C R E D I T S : Accessories: Designers Only, antiques: Scott Lindsay Antiques; area rugs: The Rug Studio;

The large master closet features custom-made floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in a cool gray. The center island, with walnut stain, is equipped with jewelry drawers and features a beautiful Carrara marble countertop that shines under a central chandelier. Wainscot paneling and two full-length mirrors hide a deep storage closet for large items such as luggage. Beneath the large window is a built-in bench seat that gives the homeowners a comfortable place to prepare for the day. The mixture of drawers, open shelves and space to hang clothes makes this a functional closet for anyone, while the hidden soft-close hinges and drawer glides enhance the luxury and use of the space.

Shimmering moonlit shades of platinum and lavender blue set the mood for this elegant and inviting guest room. The high-backed upholstered bed is covered in fabric woven in Pearl Gray with just a sprinkle of stardust. The bedding, by iconic designer Nancy Koltes, is a sonata of swirls and lilies that is neither too feminine nor masculine. A crystal chandelier, mirrored surfaces and clear Lucite combine classic with the contemporary. Appointed with every comfort a guest could desire — sumptuous bedding, soft lighting, a comfortable chair, even a midnight snack — this room’s ambience beckons an afternoon nap or a full 40 winks, but they might not want to get up.

The alcove leading into the family game room currently displays River Reflections, the latest work released by photographer Kelly Daniels. These metal photographs are hung in a modern style, mounted slightly off the wall. Kelly is also owner of The Kelly Gallery, a portrait studio and event venue, hosting weddings on 10 acres of land nestled along the Blue River valley in Overland Park. While visiting the Blue River during an early morning walk, she discovered an amazing pool of light that formed in the reflection of the water along the bank. She found that when she turned images vertically, it created unusual patterns of designs. She made her collection of images into a book that is available in the Showhouse boutique.

You won’t mind being sent to the “doghouse” if this third-floor spot is your destination. Doggie’s Den is divided into distinct spaces tailored to the family’s three small dogs — after all, each has a mind of its own. The living room has a modern, masculine flair. The showpiece — a tobacco-colored Italian leather dog sofa — is where Jackson, a white schnoodle, spends Sunday afternoons watching The Puppy Bowl and eating takeout. The book nook, complete with zebra rug and a Bark-alounger, is Beau’s favorite; he’s a Boston terrier and a voracious reader. (“See Spot run,” anyone?) The bedroom is done in a serene cream and tan and crowned with a glistening chandelier. Fiona, a tri-colored cavalier King Charles spaniel who has a penchant for pop rock, shuts her brothers out by putting on her earphones and listening to her iPaw.

The hustle and bustle of family get-togethers sometimes requires a little solace. This environmentally friendly abode features many tantalizing restyled trends. A decorative transom draws you in, while mirrors that adorn the window space provide additional natural light. Subtle tone-on-tone, wide, horizontal-striped wallcovering by Kenneth James adds magic to the environment, while minimizing irregular space. The barley twist console table in gesso is a natural beauty. The French fauteuil in a soft wood tone finish and contemporary brocade pleases the eye and gives the room a little pop. A cabriole-legged ram’s head writing desk adds elegant beauty with a Louis XV desk chair and the most exciting indoor/outdoor fabric combination. Duo brass curios organize treasures of happy travels, while Geoffrey Hirsch’s eco-friendly and beautiful textured carpeting covers the room. The table is complemented by a mahogany sideboard and breakfront flanked by two hostess chairs. A hand-knotted wool rug and soft blue curtains framing the leaded glass windows accent the space. The damask wallpaper, pale blue ceiling and classic architectural detailing frame the room beautifully. The design is intended to exude a simple and timeless sophistication by showcasing Stickley’s legendary quality furniture and the space itself. DESIGN AREA #24 Wine Closet

This adorable tiny nook was simply “whining” to be converted into a wine cellar. A fun surprise awaits as one peeks through the stunning arched doorway to discover a quaint and sophisticated storage space for approximately 200 bottles of wine! This delightful wine cellar also serves as a wonderful place to highlight beautiful artwork and accessories relevant to the themed space. Albeit small, this cellar is spacious enough for two to peruse their collection and decide what particular wine will be a good match for a gourmet dinner or takeout from the local pizza joint.

DESIGN AREA #26 Backyard

This lovely brick patio was in need of colorful floral adornment. The seven pedestals are natural stages for these container gardens, creating a backyard oasis. The planters are handmade and sculpted locally from natural materials. These include concrete, metal and “green” recycled paper hypertufa. White and green lead the color palette, also complemented by a range of deep blue and purple. The assortment of annuals is from the best performers for early spring in Kansas City. Each of the four pedestal pots, which encircle the formal brick patio, are enhanced with an artful totem of concrete, metal and wire.

Colorful annuals enliven the stone mansion, providing contrast and visual interest to a monochromatic scene. Offset by dark mulch, the bright beds curve gently along the front walkways, which are edged in stone to soften the Showhouse’s angular shape. Flowers and shrubs will change regularly to include rhododendrons, lilacs and roses. Large, classic urns that flank the front door are filled with floral bursts, while blue atlas cedar trees accent the home’s stone façade. Pass by in early and late spring to see the flowers change.

KANSAS CITY SYMPHONY MUSIC DIRECTOR Once again, the combined efforts, creativity and devotion of our great team of volunteers have come together in spectacular fashion. This 45th Annual Showhouse always promises to be one of the most original and anticipated events of our season and, at the same time, one of the most fun! The Showhouse is not only a great stage for some of the most stylish and sophisticated design in our city but also another reminder of why our Kansas City Symphony can rightfully boast having the finest and most-effective volunteers of any orchestra in the nation. I am very proud of what we are accomplishing at the Symphony, of how the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and our concerts at Helzberg Hall have changed music in the city forever, and how our city is increasingly being recognized as a great center for music and the arts. We are all in this ongoing realization of our vision, and having the commitment and energy of so many great partners is nothing short of pure gold. So, I extend a heartfelt Bravo! to this year’s president of the Kansas City Symphony Alliance, Don Dagenais; the Showhouse vice president, Ann Hager; and everyone who helped design, decorate and organize this wonderful house and magnificent event. We are lucky to have you all on our team!

Michael Stern Music Director, Kansas City Symphony
