IN OUR AUGUST ISSUE we reported that the kitchen continues to grow in importance as the heart of the home. I see this in practically every house we show in the pages of this magazine—kitchens are big, functional and brilliantly designed. In short, the kitchen is the place to be. Anyone who entertains knows what I mean. My husband and I finally ended our house hunt and recently moved into a charming brick Tudor in Denver’s Platt Park neighborhood. Built in 1938, our new home’s kitchen is typical for its time— located at the back of the house and closed off from the living and dining room. And even though it has been remodeled, it’s small and there’s limited seating: four chairs around a breakfast table. But after hosting several gatherings, I’ve observed that these shortcomings don’t deter guests from lingering. Even when I say something silly, like, “Let’s move into the living room where it’s more comfortable,” or try to serve food in the dining room, nobody moves. I suspect the kitchens in this issue really draw a crowd. Spacious and smart, they open to the rest of the home and take center stage. Not only have we rounded up some of the most beautiful kitchens in the state (starting on page 82), but we’ve also scouted fun new gadgets, appliances and accessories (starting on page 15) with which to fill them. If your kitchen isn’t the space you want it to be, we hope this issue will inspire you to change that. I know it’s giving me the urge to redo mine. Or at least make space for a few more chairs. In 1982, CH&L published a story about the Polishborn artist Witold-K. Thirty years later, we check back in with the man who has achieved international fame for his work, but who remains relatively unknown in the city where he’s had a studio and gallery since 1981—Denver.

WITOLD KACZANOWSKI, who long ago simplified his name to Witold-K, recently marked his 80th birthday (and 65th year in the arts) with celebrations hosted by family and friends, ambassadors and art patrons, in cities all over the world: Warsaw, Krakow, Paris and Denver. Throughout his career, he’s enjoyed stints as a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, architectural designer, set designer, photographer and poet, and his work has appeared in galleries around the globe—from Warsaw to Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles to New York—starring in more than 40 one-man shows in the United States and Europe. In 1964, he went to

Paris on an art scholarship and was introduced to the painter Pablo Picasso, who extended an invitation to paint with him in the south of France. In 2007, Sotheby’s in Amsterdam paid him the extraordinary tribute of organizing a retrospective of his work. He’s nothing short of a creative renaissance man. We sat down with the artist at Arté, his studio-gallery in Denver’s Cherry Creek North shopping district, to discover that the charming raconteur offers no short answers, touching on history and philosophy as well as art.
Have you always wanted to be an artist?
Colorado Homes & Lifestyles: How has your Polish heritage shaped your art?
You grew up during the Nazi occupation of Poland, in a mental hospital where your father was director. How did that upbringing influence your art?
Witold-K: I’ve always been drawn to Polish folk art, but not commercialized folk art. Far away in Eastern Poland where country roads cross, you’ll often find a small “santo” standing on a wooden post. Primitive and charming, it was the art of farmers living in the country where almost every person created something. I find great beauty in this folk art, which can be religious too. 28

Yes and no. For a long time I wanted to be an architect. More specifically I wanted to be an architect who designs zoos. When I was a boy, I saw the animals in small cages pacing back and forth and I wanted to design zoos in which animals would have some space, some freedom. When I was bored in school, especially during math and science classes, I would always be drawing something and the teacher would have to shout at me.
I witnessed so much human tragedy, especially during the winter of 1941-42. The Nazis stole everything of value from the hospital, and patients died from starvation and cold. I watched from my window as the undertaker took them away in a two-wheeled cart. But more than that, I witnessed—and

experienced—loneliness. I can tell you that nobody is more lonely than the mentally disturbed. And so I began drawing the loneliness of the figure. I remember walking down the Avenue of the Americas in New York one cold winter evening in 1966. A shop window with a display of fur coats illuminated a homeless man sitting on the curb with his hands clasping his knees, in a fetal position. I started painting this scene—very realistically at first, then with greater abstraction until I captured what was, to me, the essence of loneliness. In 1958, you were asked by the Polish city of O´swiç ecim to design a Cultural Center. Tell us your response to that creative challenge.

Yes, I was asked to be the architectural designer and muralist. I chose to honor the victims who died at Auschwitz, which is just a few miles from O´swieçcim. The building I designed has white wings—like an angel’s—with no decoration, no details. It was very contemporary for the time. In the theater, I painted a very large mural, bigger than 4,000 square feet, of people in the sky—colorful, happy people, the way they look before tragedy strikes. Gradually, the ceiling goes dim until you can no longer see the people in the mural...and what remains is a sky full of stars. How was the work received by the community?
The local communist party apparatchiks didn’t like what I did, and so the concept was not fully realized until 2011, when the city spent a tremendous amount of time restoring the mural. I was invited back and was happy with the results because, well, it is my baby. We’ve heard you’re fascinated with explosions. We’re intrigued.

I’ve always considered Mark Rothko one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, and when I lived in Houston, I visited the Rothko Chapel many times. I looked into the blackness of his paintings and saw not just black, but a vibration that is close to nothingness. At first I had the distinct feeling that I should stop painting and destroy everything I’d done; that’s how I felt in the presence of those few great pieces. Then I thought: how could I, as an artist, go farther? So I began blowing holes in Rothko’s paintings—in my mind, you understand—to see what’s on the other side. That’s when I started painting and creating black holes.

You were invited to exhibit at Sotheby’s in Amsterdam. That’s quite an honor. What did that experience mean to you?
Let me explain it this way: I drive my little old car and I can see other cars passing me, going very fast on the contemporary ‘art highway.’ I try to go at my own speed without trying to adjust my artistic language to the fashion of the day. Of course, there have been moments when I’ve had doubts. But the Sotheby’s exhibition reinforced that I have been right to go my own way. If you had to choose your most memorable career moment, what would it be?
A few months ago, the museum in Krakow bought an entire series of human heads that I had painted in 1964. No one had ever bought a single painting in this series so I still had all 38 of them—isn’t that extraordinary? And because I make my living as an artist, it’s also meaningful that my paintings have increased in value. What brought you to Colorado? And what keeps you here?
Family reasons, actually. My oldest son, Paul, is a diabetic and, with the exception of Stockholm, Denver has the best doctors and hospitals, and the most innovative therapies to treat diabetes. I stay here because my grandson was born here, and I am most happy in the moments when I am skiing in the Colorado mountains with my boys—my son and grandson. What are you hoping for at this stage in your career?
Many poets and writers describe what I paint, but I haven’t understood what’s behind the images that come from my subconscious. At 80 years old, maybe I will finally be able to look back and understand my art. To read the entire interview, visit coloradohomesmag.com/WitoldK

ROBERT DENERSTEIN, former film critic at the Rocky Mountain News, is collaborating with cinematographer Jim Phelan and Denver Film Society and Starz Denver Film Festival co-founder Ron Henderson—a longtime friend of Witold-K—to bring the artist’s story to life on film. “Witold has led an amazing life,” Denerstein says. “We’ve conducted a number of lengthy interviews and spent 10 days with Witold in Poland.” While there is no set date for completion, Denerstein jokes that “we certainly hope to celebrate the film’s opening well before Witold’s 90th birthday.”

SPEND AN AFTERNOON WITH Shery “Bear” McDonald-Galbreath, and you’ll discover that she is a delightful study in contrasts. McDonald-Galbreath is founder and president of the SaddleUp! Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides hippotherapy—a form of physical therapy using horses—for disabled clients on her 40-acre property in Parker. But this self-described cowgirl also wears a strand of pearls while mucking the stalls. “They remind me of my grandmother and
mother,” she says, “both of whom raised me and wore pearls every day,” recalling that when she received the gift of her first pearl necklace, her grandmother said, “‘I don’t care what you’re doing, always wear these.” The strand is McDonaldGalbreath’s way of paying homage to the two women who taught her the value of hard work, and the virtues of generosity, respect and gratitude. Such principles guided her to start the foundation in 2002, after a successful journalism career as

a society writer at the Rocky Mountain News and as an entertainment reporter on Denver’s 9News and KIMN radio. Living in Cherry Hills at the time, she and husband Jim were regular volunteers at the Cherry Hills Elementary School carnival, providing horses for the kids’ rides. One year, their daughter Emma, who was six at the time, introduced her parents to a classmate in a wheelchair. When the young girl said, “Can you help me ride one day?” McDonald-Galbreath knew she had found her life’s work. With the help of physical therapist Robin Bowman, McDonald-Galbreath started the SaddleUp! Foundation, funding the fledgling charity from her own pocket. What she soon learned was that often most people who benefit from hippotherapy also require other kinds of treatment as well, such as occupational and speech therapies, along with those involving art and music. “I saw parents who were driving all over town to get their child the best treatment and often had to bring their other children along.” McDonald-Galbreath’s response was to provide a number of therapies through SaddleUp!, including occupational, speech, art, music and reading therapies, all on her property and under the guidance of her staff. Back to the surprising contrasts in McDonald-Galbreath’s nature. When the nonprofit founder realized she needed an indoor riding arena, she built one on the Parker property. Then the family built a house there and moved from Cherry Hills. “Everyone expects the place to be designed with Southwestern or cowboy decor,” she says with a laugh. “But I’m an English cottage gal. I love blues and yellows and a white fence. I want clients and their families to feel like they are entering a home, not an institution.” She also wants her staff and volunteers to feel that their work is an extension of family life. “My goal is to grow the foundation financially, so I can give more scholarships,” McDonald-Galbreath says of the organization, which survives on donations alone, “but I never want it to be so big that we lose our sense of family.” SaddleUpFoundation.org

WE WERE JUST WONDERING... Those who know you well call you “Bear.” How did you get the nickname? I grew up with my mother and grandmother who gave great hugs, and were also very huggable. They started calling me Bear whenever we hugged—and it stuck. What is the most incredible horse ride you’ve taken? With my husband Jim and my daughter Emma [pictured above] on our property beneath a full moon. It was beautiful and wonderful being all together in the moonlight. What is your favorite room in your home? I love my kitchen because it reminds me of my grandmother. It’s yellow and white, very cheerful, and has windows to the south and French doors to the west. When there’s a lightning storm, the show from the kitchen is the best. Tell us about your most indelible horse memory. It was on Mother’s Day several years ago, right after we bought our first horse, Prince Phillip. I wasn’t horse-savvy enough to assert myself as the alpha, and he charged me. Later that day, after Jim and I agreed that we had to get rid of him, I went back out to the field feeling sick at heart. Jim was standing there with Prince Phillip, who was tucking his head under Jim’s arm, as if to say, ‘I’m so sorry. I will never do that again.’ That was my Mother’s Day gift, and to this day, he’s my favorite horse.

the center of it all Constructing a kitchen in the middle of a shopping center is no small task. Fortunately, the project fell into the capable hands of William Ohs kitchen designer Nabeel Faizi. Here, Faizi breaks down the design behind the stylish and fully functional kitchen at the 2012 Home & Lifestyle Show.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER With a passion for art and more than 25 years of experience designing kitchens, bathrooms and furniture, Nabeel Faizi’s hobby has become his profession. “As an artist, I have learned how to mix different elements and put pieces of a puzzle together,” he says. Born and raised in Afghanistan, Faizi was 17 when his family immigrated to the US. “I was studying architectural engineering, and after moving to the States I pursued my electrical engineering degree at Colorado State University.” Faizi has worked with several high-end cabinet companies and has been designing for William Ohs for six years. When it came to designing this kitchen, he relished the artistic freedom he was allowed. “When I design for a client, I am influenced by his or her personal style and wish list. In this instance, I was allowed to exhibit my own individuality. I could take a little more risk.”
Faizi selected Calcutta Gold marble from The Stone Collection for the perimeter countertops and Caesarstone’s new “Fair Lady” for the center island. “The marble acts as a subtle backdrop for the dark walnut cabinetry, and the Caesarstone blends perfectly with the marble.”

Faizi’s custom-designed range hood, featuring stainless steel with polished steel accents, was produced by Weldwright Fabricators. “This is the kitchen’s focal point,” the designer says.
Bright backsplash tile “offers the pop of color necessary to temper the contrast of the creamy countertops and the dark walnut cabinetry.”
In deciding where to place each appliance, Faizi carefully considered the variety of ways in which the kitchen would be used throughout the show. “We need the flow to work well for multiple chefs as well as audience viewing.”
Faizi created the unique oval glass door mullions “to accentuate the tall, modern cabinets at either end,” he says. “The glass-front cabinetry is traditional, while the ones that flank it are quite contemporary. Marrying the two looks creates a modern yet classic style.”
Painstaking attention was paid to the smallest details, down to the hardware. “I really wanted something different, so I spent an inordinate amount of time researching pulls and knobs that weren’t run of the mill.”

40 years in the kitchen With his European-style, furniture-like cabinetry, William Ohs changed the face of the American kitchen industry. Follow the evolution of the Colorado kitchen designer’s company from one-man shop to world-renowned cabinet manufacturer.
After working as a teacher in Denver and the Arctic Circle, William (Bill) Ohs decides to open a woodshop—called Bill’s Custom Wood Shelving—in a rented three-car garage in Arvada, specializing in handcrafted bookcases and entertainment centers.

Ohs travels throughout Europe and observes a variety of classic styles— French Country, English Manor—that would influence the rendering of his signature furniture-like cabinets. (The casual elegance of the Tuscan-style kitchen would be his most powerful concept.)
The craftsman, who has a background in architecture, struggles to make his woodworking business a thriving enterprise. His wife, Nancy, whom Ohs credits for many of the business’s sound decisions, poses a question: Wouldn’t crafting custom cabinetry be more financially viable?

1976 1980 Ohs rents a 400square-foot showroom—and puts a Shaker-style kitchen in the window—on East 6th Avenue in Denver, and recruits a small but skillful group of designers (one of whom is now minority owner in the company).

1988 Ohs’ “theme styling” kitchens bring various European styles into the American home. “We weren’t creating museum replicas,” he says, “but the designs captured the spirit of a particular style.” Curve-top hutches, decorative molding and glazed finishes are hallmarks of the look. Inside, however, the cabinets have all the makings of cutting-edge contemporary design.
Ohs purchases a 25,000square-foot manufacturing plant in Denver, where every door and drawer that comprises a William Ohs kitchen would be manufactured by hand. (In 2005, the company would adopt an adjacent building, rounding out the plant to the impressive 48,000-square-foot plant it fills today.)

William Ohs-designed kitchens start cropping up outside of Colorado, and discriminating kitchen showrooms in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Palm Beach begin showcasing Ohs’ cabinetry. The company is one of the smallest to advertise in Architectural Digest.
1990s 2012 Though the company still creates the same curvy, traditional look for which it became famous, its portfolio includes more modern-minded designs too. “I’m still interested in classic looks,” Ohs says, “meaning things that won’t wear out next year, but nowadays I’m looking more toward transitional and contemporary styling.”

Kevin Taylor Kevin Taylor is one of Denver’s most acclaimed chefs, operating a variety of successful restaurants including the city’s only four-star, four-diamond restaurant, Restaurant Kevin Taylor. Taylor has been cooking since he was 14, beginning as an apprentice chef at Green Gables Country Club, where he worked under the former chef of London’s famed Savory Hotel. Following his apprenticeship, he was hired to work as a sous chef at Colorado’s Cherry Hills Country Club, where he created dishes with some of the most unique ingredients available both globally and locally, solidifying his passion for fresh, pure flavor profiles. In 1987, at the age of 25, Taylor opened his first restaurant, Denver’s Zenith American Grill, serving his personal take on southwestern cuisine. Six months after opening, Zenith was among the three top-rated restaurants in the city. Both local press and national media outlets, including Bon Appetit, Restaurant Hospitality and GQ, took notice. Zenith also earned a prized four-star rating, securing Taylor’s place on the culinary map. Taylor’s namesake restaurant, the four-star, four-diamond Restaurant Kevin Taylor, serves diners from inside Denver’s luxurious Hotel Teatro (as does the more casual, modern Italian restaurant, Prima Ristorante). Just across the street, in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, theatergoers enjoy modern American cuisine at Kevin Taylor’s at the Opera House, and casual pre- and post-theater fare at Limelight Supper Club & Lounge. At the nearby Denver Art Museum, Taylor entices art lovers with contemporary American fare at Palettes. Lastly, Rouge serves modern mountain chophouse cuisine from Central City’s historic Teller House,. Jenna Johansen Colorado native and celebrity chef Jenna Johansen is best known for her appearance on Bravo Television’s culinary competition show, Around the World in 80 Plates. Johansen attended Colorado State University, where she earned a degree in Restaurant and Resort Management, then Johnson & Wales University in Vail to obtain a culinary degree. The emerging chef then spent a year in Tuscany working for a family-owned restaurant whose seasonal, market-fresh menus would shape her approach to food. Returning to Colorado, she was hired as the opening chef at Ventura Grille before she opened Dish Restaurant in Edwards in 2006, which serves reasonably priced and beautiful dishes that play up local ingredients. Ann Benson Reidy Art consultant Ann Benson Reidy has been passionately involved in the Denver art community for nearly twenty years. Olav Peterson Denver native Olav Peterson is the chef and co-owner of Denver’s Bittersweet, running the restaurant with his wife, Melissa. From slinging hamburgers, pancakes and eggs at a truckstop to working as Executive Chef at top restaurants like 1515, Euro and Bistro One, Peterson has always known his calling was in the kitchen. In 1997, Peterson spent six months living in a tent outside Fiesole, Italy, on the grounds of an old castle. He would wake up to vineyards on one side and olive gardens on the other, with views of chateaus in the background. There he absorbed the tradition of artisanal cuisine and culture. The omnipresence of food and art affected Peterson deeply; he refers to this experience as his terroir. Annie Huston Landscape designer and gardening expert Annie Huston finds inspiration during extensive travels with her husband, Scott, with whom she owns Denver-based Columbine Design. Born in the Savoie region of France, Huston says she has always felt a love for plants and flowers. “As a toddler, I would run into a field of wildflowers and refuse to get back in the car unless I had picked all the blooms. I also had a tendency to pick all the flowers in the neighbors’ gardens to give gigantic bouquets to my mom, who then had to apologize.” Arriving in the US as an AFS (American Field Service) student, Huston finished high school in Alexandria, Virginia, and earned a degree in Mass Communications from the University of Denver. She and Scott started Columbine Design in 1985 with “one ugly truck, a dog that accompanied Scott to projects that he installed himself, a mechanical typewriter for creating contracts and a wooden drafting table where Scott worked in the evenings.” Huston lectures at the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Hudson Gardens, as well as local garden clubs and centers and Master Gardener programs. columbinedesigninc.com
Daniel Asher Chef Daniel Asher brings more than 18 years of commercial foodservice experience to the culinary team at Denver’s Root Down and Linger restaurants. Inspired by his mom’s culinary talents, he began working by her side in the kitchen at the age of seven. Beginning with “potato-peeling duty” and dishwashing at 14, he worked his way around various kitchens—from fryer to grill, sauté to saucier, pantry to pastry— among culinary luminaries like Chicago’s Charlie Trotter and Rick Bayless. William Ohs In 1972, in a three-car garage with one employee, Bill Ohs established William Ohs, Inc., designing and crafting book shelving, builtin home office furniture and entertainment centers. Ohs gradually realigned the company’s focus to handcrafted kitchen cabinetry in the European style, with elegant furniture-like designs that would “surprise and delight” homeowners. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, new transitional, modern and contemporary designs were added to the William Ohs portfolio, completing the spectrum of custom furniture design the company offers. The Challenge The owners of this suburban Denver home were tired of navigating a cramped, dated kitchen. With lots of children and grandchildren showing up for family gatherings, they needed more space and a smarter layout. “They wanted to open up the kitchen, living room and family room and create a great room with plenty of space for a nice, big kitchen,” says interior designer Ingrid Fretheim of Ingrid Fretheim Interiors. “A place where everyone could be together.”
Design Solution A Provence blue La Cornue range set the stage for the design. “The homeowners fell in love with the range and we decided to match the island to that color,” says kitchen designer Terri Rose of Exquisite Kitchen Design. “It was a pretty bold move.” Ivory cabinetry on the perimeter of the L-shaped kitchen tempers the blue and adds interest with furniture-like details: legs, crown molding, a wood-paneled stove hood and varied upper cabinet heights. Texture comes into play with hand-painted and glazed backsplash tiles, leathered Tidal White granite countertops and an end-grain white oak accent counter. Open shelving and glass-front cabinets display bright accessories, while handmade wool rugs pull together all the colors in the room. The result, says Fretheim, is a “timeless and traditional kitchen with a bit of European sophistication.”

The Challenge The owner of a new contemporary home in Breckenridge told Kathye Conti, CKD, of Kitchenscapes, Inc., that her vision for the kitchen was a space so clean and simple that she could almost hose it down. “It was all about form and function for her,” Conti says. The kitchen also needed to meet two specific objectives: to honor the connection with nature and to provide a custom design for the avid cook and baker.
Design Solution The crisp blue-and-white palette plays off views of mountains and sky on display through a stunning wall of windows. Deep blue cabinetry has a high-gloss foil finish that contrasts beautifully with stainless steel and three different countertop materials: white quartz, a concrete-and-glass composite and lighted glass. To accommodate the homeowner’s love of baking, the designer added two raised ovens that flank a cabinet for housing baking supplies and tools. An induction cooktop and two gas burners stand by for any cooking project and an oversized downdraft offers ventilation without blocking views. An art glass bowl from Pismo provides a dramatic finishing touch. In a feat of engineering, Conti meticulously aligned the cabinets along a curved window wall and worked in multiple dishwasher drawers, a steam/microwave oven, a built-in coffee bar, two recycling stations and a wide refrigerator/freezer. “People spend a lot of time thinking about their dream kitchen,” Conti says, “and most custom kitchens are designed around the appliances.”

Designed for an active young family, this newly built home has an aged aura that fits right into Denver’s venerable Observatory Park neighborhood. The homeowners, Stephen Martin and Lucie Lawrence, desired a kitchen that had an open floor plan and modern conveniences, yet embraced old fashioned elements. “We envisioned a warm, cottage-style kitchen where family gathers around the hearth,” Martin says.
The focal point of the room is a modern-day hearth—a stone niche that “harkens back to old cooking fireplaces,” says architect Bryan Gunn of Studio Gunn Architecture. Gunn maximized the footprint of the room with long banks of perimeter cabinetry and a large, hard-working island that provides prep and eating space and abundant storage. The homeowners worked with kitchen designer Mary Jenkins of BKC Kitchen &

Bath to select vintage-inspired elements such as the butcher block countertop, wood cabinets in two different styles and colors, bin pulls, bubble glass door inserts and subway tiles. The dishwasher and microwave are hidden behind cabinetry, while plates are stored on an open rack above the farmhouse sink. “Even with all the old fashioned elements, it is still a very modern, functional layout that accommodates family life,” Gunn says.

Tuscan Retreat A New World home boasts a kitchen with Old World charm BY CHERYL MEYERS

The Challenge When kitchen designer Nabeel Faizi of William Ohs was hired to design the kitchen for this newly constructed 13,000-square-foot home in Pueblo, the first thing he did was ask the clients to describe the style of their home’s architecture. After some consideration, they came up with “Southern Villa.” And for the kitchen? “The client wanted to create a room that, like the rest of the house, evoked Old World grandeur,” Faizi says. “But they also wanted a manageable working space”—a place where they could actually cook and entertain. When Faizi suggested a Tuscan-style kitchen the clients immediately got on board.
Design Solution The biggest challenge, says Faizi, was working with such a grand volume of space. “We wanted to design it so that every appliance and fixture was within reach, but we also needed to balance elements to fill the room.” The solution was a U-shaped layout with two seven-foot islands— one that would function as the workspace, the other as a serving area. To evoke the craftsmanship and ornate details of a traditional Tuscan kitchen, Faizi assembled a mix of finishes, including crown moldings and pilaster details that make the cabinets feel like pieces of antique furniture. The wood throughout is alder, but the finishes vary greatly to create warmth and interest: the perimeter of the kitchen is ivory; the armoire that houses the Sub-Zero refrigerator is celadon; and the butler’s pantry is papyrus with custom etching.

the Land A meticulously crafted Denver home connects to nature in more ways than one

The loggia provides shady respite from the Colorado sun. Denver interior designer Mikhail Dantes treated the sheltered space like an exterior living room, grouping furnishings into functional areas. “The furniture style is a little bit classic and a little bit contemporary,” he says. Outdoor fabrics are from DeLany & Long. A pair of console tables sits along the wall, providing usable surfaces for food or drinks. Architect Don Ruggles specified that the Douglas fir beamwork be stained dark in keeping with the Spanish Revival style.
south-facing loggia of this Spanish Revival home in Cherry Hills Village, take in your surroundings and be rewarded with a direct view of Pikes Peak. Turn exactly 90 degrees west and you’ll spot Mount Evans. Now cross those two sight lines and you’ve traced the main axes of this stone-and-stucco abode. “That kind of crossing is an important element in Spanish Revival design,” architect Don Ruggles says. Indeed, those sight lines— and the views—are the starting point for the layout of the house. While the loggias frame the vistas, the interior spaces are carefully arranged to flow from enclosed volumes to light-filled covered walkways, then out onto wide-open terraced lawns.

It takes more than thoughtful vistas and a careful layout to create a Spanish Revival composition, though. “To support the style you have to get the fundamentals right,” says Ruggles, who uses a specific recipe of materials—thick stucco walls, red tile roofing, ironwork and deep-set windows trimmed with stone and accents of tile—to recreate the iconic style that sprang from the early California missions. While these elements are historical, Ruggles also channels local inspiration into his designs, particularly for these nature-loving homeowners: “There is a row of trees on the site and I echoed the curved shapes of their canopy to create the slightly flattened arches we used.” But the real celebration of the owners’ intimate connection with nature—and their passion for growing their own food—was expressed with the help of landscape architect Herb Schaal, FASLA, who created a rabbit-proof, 600-square-foot kitchen garden (which is enclosed by a three-foot-high buff sandstone wall). Within the plot, he laid out raised beds for tomatoes, beans, carrots and the like. On the outer edges of the 2.5-acre site lie beds for vegetables that require more room to sprawl, like squash and pumpkins. Chickens in a coop provide eggs. 100
Ruggles and landscape designer Herb Schaal worked together to create a seamless transition from home to garden. A trellis of laminated beams frames views with its spacious curve, and the terraced grass area steps down to rows of grapevines.

A man-made creek flows past a hot tub and on to the bass pond. Mexican feather grass, juniper and Black-eyed Susans, along with water iris and many sedge species, recreate a riparian habitat along stream’s edge.

Vegetables aren’t the only delicacies these homeowners harvest. Their property also contains a full-fledged vineyard—with more than 200 vines yielding cabernet sauvignon, merlot and muscat grapes—that Schaal designed in a semicircle to echo the lines of the house. “The owners have been making their own wine for years,” he says. The family connects with its environment in deeper ways as well. The lower bass pond is sited so that in March and September, the equinox months, the full moon reflects upon its surface. A path lined with sandstone pavers and thyme plants invites meditative strolls. Brass lines on a customized sundial mark where the sun will rise on the children’s birthdays. Of all these outdoor features, perhaps most beautiful is the terrace off the south-facing loggia, where a swath of grass accommodates guests for fundraisers and parties. On one side is an outdoor kitchen, and on the other the expansive water feature designed by Schaal—a cascade that flows along a stone wall, then into a boulder-strewn stream flanked with water iris, sedges and Mexican feather grass and finally around the hot tub and into the bass pond. “This feature, this entire home, is a celebration of the owners’ passionate interest in connecting design and nature.” DESIGN DETAILS (left) The dramatic rear loggia looks out over a grassy circle perfect for entertaining or the occasional yard game. CH&L: Give us the back story. How did this project get its start?
Yvonne Jacobs: Mark and Polly Peterson have a wonderful family tradition of skiing in Vail over the holidays. Mark visited as a child and now the couple brings their children from their home in South Dakota. Longtime clients of mine, the Petersons asked me to remodel and furnish their first Vail home in 2007. Then when the family fell in love with Scott Turnipseed’s work, we were brought in to do the interior. They wanted the look to be an extension of the architecture, which meant using lighter, softer colors. Our goal was to create a family-oriented space, since the Petersons have dogs, kids, et cetera. They didn’t want anything to be too precious, but they do enjoy nice things. How did the surrounding landscape inspire your design?
The sunlight that comes into this house is amazing, so we wanted to play that up. What’s more, every window in this house has a view. We used those concepts as the inspiration for bringing in natural colors and light. Most of the larger furniture is positioned to overlook the view, making the scenery a form of art. The look is cozy, but not ubiquitous or dull.
We tried to remain natural with the color palette, using chocolate brown, sage green and burnt orange—colors that complement the picturesque landscape. The [spec] finishes were light, so we added richness with mohair and chenille fabrics. We threw in an edgy piece here and there, such as the area rug in the great room that grounds the space while adding a twist to ward off boredom. Touches of bright color—green dishware in the kitchen, fiery throw pillows on the patio—make the softer palette pop.
In the dining area off the kitchen, a collection of Michael Berman chairs and a Bausman & Company dining table collaborate to form a vignette that’s anchored by subdued Kravet lounge chairs. An unexpected centerpiece made of rustic wood completes the look.

We love the beautifully arranged bookshelf in the library. What are your tips for recreating that kind of display?
It took me a week to get that bookshelf right! What you see is an artistic display; it isn’t something we just threw together. You start with books— various sizes, shapes and colors—then add accessories. The key is to move things around, to try arranging items in a bunch of different positions. I’d walk away for a day then return with a fresh perspective, or take a photo to look at later on. Ultimately, it is all about the juxtaposition of large and small. For the home’s art, you opted for a less-is-more approach by incorporating a few attention-grabbing pieces. How did you pull that off?
It was a huge effort to get the art just right, a process of being in the house, walking around, finding the right colors and positioning for each space. The Petersons don’t like things to be overdone, which is why the artwork isn’t overwhelming. When you have a strong piece like a Theodore Waddell, there’s no need to overpower it. The same goes for Thomas Swanston’s Look! A Crane Overhead, found in the master bedroom. The bright gilded piece was placed on a huge wall so its reflection would brighten the whole room. 109

It started as a simple remodel and developed into a major renovation—and now, this Cherry Hills Village home is the perfect spot for a happy family of seven
IN THE DESIGN WORLD, IT’S CALLED THE DOMINO EFFECT. You buy a home with the intention of changing just a few details. That turns into remodeling a few rooms and incorporating a small addition. Before you know it, the home is stripped to the studs and ready for a major do-over. That’s precisely what happened with Chris Bittman and Kenda Noble, who purchased their Denver home in order to put down roots and raise five children. But to say they embarked upon a complete renovation is an understatement. With the help of San Francisco-based architect Kurt Lavenson (who helped them renovate two previous homes), the couple nearly doubled the size of of their 1970s home with additions and a basement expansion.
A Grand Gathering Place The family expanded the home to add the well-appointed great room (opposite), or as they like to call it, The Ballroom. “Our home in California was built in 1932 and had a western ballroom,” explains Bittman. “We wanted to recreate the look of that space here.” Hand-scraped walnut floors, large timber trusses and rustic chandeliers from Laura Lee Design create the western feel; sofas upholstered in luscious Brunschwig & Fils royal blue chenille paired with an eclectic mix of antiques keep the room from becoming overly themed. “We wanted a place to entertain, where our family could just hang out by the fireplace,” Noble adds.
Literary Masterpiece “We think all homes should have a library,” Bittman says. And since the formal dining room doesn’t get much use, the couple decided to give the space a split personality by lining the walls with custom shelves in which to display their extensive book collection. It is a collection well worth showcasing: each and every book is signed by its author—including 24 American presidents. “The room is a great conversation piece for guests,” Bittman says. Also attached to a good story is the stunning mahogany ball-and-claw table, made by Bittman’s great-grandfather around the turn of the century. A Pakistani rug from Soraya Rugs in San Francisco grounds the decidedly masculine space, and a crystal chandelier adds a touch of feminine sparkle. 113
Family-Style Dining “There are seven of us, and more often than not, a few other kids,” Noble says. “We needed a big table, and that drove the size and flow of the room.” The commanding table, from Colorado Style Home Furnishings, expands to seat twelve. A circa-1890 Tibetan cabinet, pendant lights from Visual Comfort and a perfectly faded rug from Shaver-Ramsey complete the space. Adjacent to the kitchen, the open and sunlit dining space is part of a long view from the kitchen to the great room. “This sort of flow works well throughout the house,” Lavenson says. “Walking through that narrow passageway into the great room makes entering the space much more dramatic.”

The Starting Point
Light and Airy
Although the home itself called to the couple—“We knew we could be happy here,” recalls Bittman—it was the lush, park-like 2.5 acres on which it is situated that really sealed the deal. “The lot was beautiful, with a pool and a great gazebo,” says Noble. As beautiful as it was, Bittman and Noble were still able to add their personal touch. They worked with Lavenson to renovate the tired pool, and with landscape designer Mike Eagleton to upgrade the gardens. Revamping the home’s entrance was also high on the priority list. “The original entry was uninviting and hard to find,” Lavenson says. “We redesigned it so that it sweeps you into the home. Its relationship with the house is now completely different.”
The design of the charming family room started with the drapery fabric, Lee Jofa’s Bambu Volante, which Noble “fell in love with right away.” Like other spaces in the home, this comfortable room is filled with an easy mix of new furnishings and collected pieces Bittman and Noble picked up during their travels. “Actually, I think the pieces collected us,” laughs Bittman. “We like things that have a great story. Even if we don’t have a place for an item, we’re compelled to buy it if it has a great story and a sense of history.” Here, a new sofa from Moda Antica is flanked by a 1920s Spanish Revival console found at a shop in Pasadena, California. A simple sisal rug keeps the space light, while a handsome upholstered side chair and an abstract painting by Miani Carnevale from Walker Fine Art add a lively pop of color. 115

Fit For a Crowd One of three kitchens in the home, the main kitchen is a shining example of form married to function. The large island, custom-made by Jay Minors of Golden Cabinets & Design, was inspired by a picture of an old French kitchen island Noble tore from a magazine. “Its construction was a labor of love,” she says, “and it can seat a lot of kids for breakfast.” With a butcher-block top, a large Vermont Soapstone sink and two dishwashers, the centerpiece brilliantly combines modern convenience with an Old-World aesthetic. Lining the perimeter of the space and framing the Lacanche range, the rich red cabinetry by Aspen Leaf Kitchens keeps this hard-working room from feeling too serious. Custom leaded glass panels made by Denver’s Bella Glass Studios add to the aged feel. The homeowners love the room for its old-meets-new appeal, and how the space is perched within the house. “The room faces west and looks over the back grounds. It’s up one level from the main floor, so you really feel like you’re in a treehouse.”

A Hostess’s Dream This additional full kitchen is just one part of the fully renovated and expanded basement that also includes a large family room, guest suite, gym and wine cellar. Leading outside to a pool and play area, the small but convenient kitchen allows the family to keep outdoor parties to one level. “We really enjoy entertaining and this has been a fun addition to the house,” Bittman says. Pretty blue-and-cream tiles from Decorative Materials add pattern to the quiet Durango travertine countertops and warm wood cabinetry. 118
Grown-Up Retreat What was once a dark, claustrophobic space is now a bright and spa-like escape. “The original master suite was large and in a good location, but it was sort of ‘old country style,’” Bittman says. “Dark, with pine everywhere.” The solution? Steal space from the attic to raise the roof, add skylights and paint the ceiling white. With reclaimed tumbled marble flooring (which required the floor to be reinforced), Jerusalem Gold mosaic tile surrounding the tub and lining the back wall, and warm mahogany cabinetry, the space is pure luxury. A large trough sink from Sonoma Cast Stone keeps the space from feeling too formal. The master bedroom is also elegant yet casual. The bed, with its pretty upholstered headboard and casual linens, takes center stage, while classic side tables, modern lamps and fun benches continue the home’s eclectic, not-so-serious style. Rich grasscloth wallpaper and a Karin Schminke print add warmth to the space, with the help of a fireplace opposite the bed.
A Happy Ending “When we first saw this home, we knew that a large family had lived here and that it was a happy place,” Bittman says. “We don’t have a single style that we favor,” adds Noble, “ but we knew we could make the home ours: comfortable and focused around our family.”

By Mark Samuelson When Brian Hazen moved to Aspen in 1972, the town on the Roaring Fork River was already decades into a battle over growth – perpetually item number one on the agenda of the Aspen City Council and the Pitkin County Commissioners. The entities were hemmed in by National Forest and BLM ground comprising 85-percent of their land area, at a time when Americans had en-masse discovered skiing and when political elites and Hollywood stars had begun making pilgrimages to the Victorian town. Back in the 1890s, Aspen had seen boom and bust when the silver crash sent its fortunes plummeting, and anti-growth advocates were determined that Aspen’s newly prized resources – snow and scenery – wouldn’t become the makings of another apocalypse. In 1977, Aspen and Pitkin County limited their growth rate to 3.47-percent per year, along lines of an ordinance passed in Petaluma, Calif. Hazen, who got his real estate license that same year, now a Coldwell Banker Previews International Agent, says Aspen land has become one
of the nation’s rarest commodities – something that buoys the market against slides that Phoenix, Fla. and Las Vegas suffered after their own booms. “I’ve always believed we would be last affected and first to recover,” he adds, noting that local prices bottomed out in 2010, and properties are seeing appreciation again.
Billionaires Club – and tracks purchasers from Wall Street, Brazil and Argentina, and Continentals fleeing a weak Euro. In a market where a small house in West End near downtown commands $4 million, his newest listing is in Starwood: a 16,000 square foot estate on 4.3 acres, at $21.9 million.
Meanwhile, the town’s ambience now creates a resort with two peak seasons: summer as popular, maybe even more so, than ski season. “This is a historic community that became a resort, rather than a resort trying to be a community,” Hazen says, adding that his church and fire department both date from 1882. With popular festivals launched by Aspen Institute founder Walter Paepcke, Aspen does what East Coast resorts dream about – attracts glitterati to what they see as a permanent residence, served by 130 restaurants, with scenery as alluring in May or September as in December or July. “The secret of Aspen has always been people who come to live and enjoy, not to buy and flip,” Hazen adds. He’s now listed in Who’s Who in Real Estate’s

Keep it sleek. “European kitchens are trending very contemporary,” says Mikal Otten, lead kitchen designer and owner of Exquisite Kitchen Design, who likes the look of horizontal lines and warm woods juxtaposed against cool stone floors. Declutter the countertop. William Landeros, designer and showroom director at bulthaup Denver, says, “Europeans are fierce about moving unnecessary clutter off the counter.” Follow suit by stowing everything that you don’t use daily.

Functionality first is the European way. Assess the organization of your cabinets. Are your dishes within easy reach of the dishwasher? Spices near the stove? Do you have utensils organized by function: prepping, cooking and serving?

Spring for smart storage. Landeros recommends storage solutions such as the “function boxes” that come with bulthaup’s b3 line. Doors flip open to reveal knives, cutting boards, scrubbies and other everyday usables.

Start fresh. “Lots of Coloradans are pulling out their old kitchens and installing easier to clean, low-maintenance European cabinetry,” Landeros says. The so-hot-rightnow look is bronze- or graphite-shaded aluminum warmed by black oak or walnut.

Be flexible. Instead of incorporating the big range that you rarely really need, consider a Fagor portable induction cooktop, says Samantha Bales, principal at Studio2b, a Denver design house that carries swanky European lines like Poggenpohl. “You store it in a drawer and only pull it out for big meals,” she says.

Choose “quiet” countertops. “Quartz countertops like Caesarstone are very popular right now,” Landeros says. “They don’t have a busy pattern like granite does and create more harmony in the space.” Materials matter. “Europeans love natural materials,” says Otten, who is partial to Carrera marble, woods such as larch or fumed oak, and metals like iron and steel. Microwave begone! Bales loves her Gaggenau combination convection-andsteam oven, which “cooks nearly as fast as a microwave, but never dries out the food.” Better yet? One more appliance is eliminated from the space. Grow your own herbs in style. It’s très chic to grow your own herbs, but traditional pots may cramp the sleek Euro style. Modern, self-watering pots (like Eva Solo’s Herb Pot) make functional look fabulous. —Patrick Soran
