WATERFRONT RETREATS

OUR JUNE ISSUE FEATURING WATERFRONT homes is an annual favorite—not just for our readers, but for our editorial staff as well. The days spent styling, photographing and writing about beautiful homes always reinforce how much we enjoy what we do; add a waterfront locale and sunny weather into the mix, and we’re in photographer and writer paradise. Even though it’s a workday, there’s a retreat-like feeling that inevitably captures us. Perhaps it’s that the homeowners seem to convey that sense of being on vacation, regardless of whether we’re visiting their weekend getaway or their main house. When we arrived at the Little Red River home of Mara and Max Simmons, our sunny day had been preceded by a rainy night, and the river was in full force, roaring loudly in the background as we toured the house. Windows and doors open, dogs trotting alongside us, cats enjoying the sun, breakfast laid out on the kitchen island, with a view to the river—instant relaxation and sheer fun ensued as we settled into a day of photographing the home they lovingly built and have now moved into full-time. We trekked to similarly inspiring places all across the state. In Mountain Home, homeowners Kathryn and Joe Miles wowed us with views of the White River from the terraces of the home they designed. On Eden Isle, the soft sounds of Greers Ferry Lake gently lapping on the shore were our background music as we photographed a recently renovated home masterfully terraced into the hillside. Colorful gardens flanked the shoreline in Hot Springs, where we visited designer Julie Shaw’s home, and North Little Rock, where we greeted Lisa and David Nutt in the early morning to photograph a series of water features cascading through their landscape overlooking a neighborhood lake. Not a bad day’s work. Though I am skipping over the pre-dawn departures to arrive at our destinations and the sadness of leaving at sunset for the long drive home, when we would much rather join our hosts to enjoy the waterfront and toast the day. We hope the spirit of ease and peacefulness that we experienced flows over to you too as you flip through these pages. It’s an official invitation to welcome summer and enjoy the myriad of waterfront retreats our state offers.

LITTLE ROCK’S HISTORIC THE VILLA MARRE RE-OPENS AS A FULL SERVICE EVENTS LOCALE Located in the Quapaw Quarter Historic District in downtown Little Rock, The Villa Marre was built in 1881 and became an architectural landmark for its Second Empire style with Italianate influences. Refurbishments to the home kept historical significance and architectural preservation in mind, and included extensive landscaping, encouraging outdoor events as well. 1321 Scott St., Little Rock, (501) 244-0409, thevillamarre.com

COLLECTOR ANNETTE HERRINGTON has a love for the beach that has continued to grow through the years. When she and her husband, Phil, married in the 1970s, they honeymooned in Sea Island, Georgia, and since that time she’s always had a fondness for the sea, sun and sand. After the couple’s daughters came along, they passed their love of the shore on to them. “We often took summer trips to Sea Island and to Nantucket, and it only made me love the sea more,” says Annette. When the couple had the chance to purchase a condo of their own in Destin, Florida, they jumped at the offer. Soon after, Annette began making plans to decorate the condo with a theme that was authentic to the region, beginning with small vintage statues and novelties that were united by a common theme—the sea. “I really wanted the condo to have a vintage feel with small little touches that reminded me of the beach and all the things I love about it,” she says. She also wanted the rooms in her condo to be filled with bright happy pops of color. The accessories collection was the ideal way to bring her vision of a vibrant vintage look to life. “It’s such a whimsical collection and I never began it with the intent of taking it seriously,” says Annette. In fact, you might say

her collection of colorful, beach-themed figurines, plates and memorabilia began on a whim. She and her youngest daughter were in Destin working on the condo and took a day trip to peruse local antique stores. The shops on this route proved to be quite fruitful and inspired the collection. The first piece they found on the jaunt was a small ceramic seaweed figurine. Annette remembers being drawn to its vintage appeal and surprised that she could snag it for just a few dollars. During the next 20 years, she continued to grow her collection in much the same manner, picking up unique finds at both local antique shops and on her travels. “It’s like a treasure hunt, you never know what you’ll find,” she laughs. One of her favorite pieces is a miniature red-and-white wicker beach chair. “It belonged to the mother of a close friend,” says Annette. “Both the mother and daughter knew I collected beach trinkets and decided to give it to me as a gift. I absolutely love it because it reminds me of them and the beach,” she says. Other well-loved pieces include small bathing beauty statues, which were sold as souvenirs at ever-popular beachside shops. Annette is particularly fond of a chalk statue of a girl in a bright pink swimsuit that likely dates from the 1930s. Her finds don’t end there. Anything from vintage guidebooks to shore-inspired tablecloths and maps of the coast has joined her collection over time. A number of tin pails and shovels with cheerful, brightly colored children’s beach scenes can also be found among the treasures, and similar versions of these now sell online for around $20 each. Many of the smaller accessories were also originally used as statues in aquarium seascapes. When Annette and Phil sold their condo on the coast, she knew the collection needed to stay visible. She boxed up the goods and brought them back to Little Rock. When a friend suggested she feature the collection in her guest bedroom, she knew that was the ideal spot to display the finds. “I like to think the pieces are a treat for my guests and maybe even a reminder of their own travels to the beach,” she says.

RIVERSIDE RETREAT

A well-traveled couple builds an inviting getaway on the Little Red River, complete with an accommodating kitchen and great room to welcome family and friends By Ronda Swaney 22

In the riverfront home of Mara and Max Simmons, the kitchen’s center island welcomes guests. Handblown pendants light the island and forged-iron accents add a personalized and rustic touch.

THERE’S NOTHING FUSSY ABOUT Mara and Max Simmons. And there’s certainly nothing fussy about the home they’ve built along the Little Red River in Heber Springs. It’s a warm and welcoming reflection of who they are. Directional signs out front list distances to far-flung places where the family has roots, including Mara’s native Mexico and their daughter-in-law’s hometown in Sweden. The signs, put up on the occasion of their daughter’s wedding, are only one indication of the wide-ranging mix of friends and family who have visited their home to rest and relax. They signify how very far away the riverfront retreat feels from the cares of city life. At a modest 2,200 square feet, every inch of the home, both inside and out, is used wisely. At the heart of it is a spacious kitchen that opens to living and dining areas, all sited with views to the river. The couple’s previous house had a similar kitchen and great room combination, and they realized when company came over, that’s where everyone ended up. That knowledge inspired their new space: “When we built this house, we did away with formal areas, like the living room and library,” says Mara. “We wanted something that would be very relaxing and comfortable for family and friends.” The same concept inspired the décor, with Mara opting for low-maintenance materials in the kitchen and sewing washable white cotton slipcovers for furnishings “so everyone can come in and put their feet up,” she says. “Between our children, grandchildren, cats and dogs, we needed something very easy to clean.” In the kitchen, guests can sit along an enlarged island for meals or to help with food prep. The island’s oak cabinets are stained black with a distressed 24

Cherished antiques and vintage finds mix in the dining room, where Mara created easy-to-clean slipcovers for armchairs. Facing page: Guests can mingle easily between the open kitchen and great room. The compact kitchen includes a variety of storage options. In front of the house, directional signs point the way to the far-flung locales of the home’s many visitors.

On the patio overlooking the river, the chic and rustic harmonize in a casual table setting with simple potted herbs and cedar plank placemats pairing with more formal china and glassware. finish to hide wear and tear, while the perimeter cabinets are white, washed in a soft glaze. Both are topped by durable granite countertops and complemented with a tumbled travertine marble backsplash. The expansive storage of the double stainless steel refrigerator makes entertaining easy. Artisan accents add finishing details, including hand-blown pendant lights from Mexico and hand-forged iron knobs and pulls. Under the lush canopy of trees next to the river, the temperature is typically cooler than the surrounding area, inviting Max, Mara and their guests to relax outside often. “I open up all the doors and use the deck outside as much as we use the inside,” says Mara. An upper-level deck and lower-level patio look out over the river, and provide plenty of seating for family and guests. Inside and out, furnishings and decor are a mix of rustic and chic, substantial and delicate, well worn and well loved. “It’s just comfortable,” Mara sums up. “It’s not fussy, but it has flair, which makes it feel special.” Design Resources Architect Conley Fikes, AIA, Polk Stanley Wilcox, Little Rock, (501) 378-0878, polkstanleywilcox.com Appliances Metro Appliances & More, Jonesboro, (870) 933-7800; North Little Rock, (501) 758-1988; Springdale, (479) 750-2200; metroappliancesandmore.com Cabinetry, lighting F.L. BACKYARD ESCAPE A North Little Rock couple creates

a lakeside garden that becomes a year-round getaway

In Lisa and David Nutt’s backyard oasis, designed by Landscape Associates, creeping juniper and azalea bushes line the Arkansas fieldstone borders of the waterfall and koi pond. A stone walkway leads to a patio with furnishings from Ken Rash’s Arkansas. Garden beds full of azaleas, petunias and lush miscanthus grass terrace down the hillside.

IF YOU KNOCK ON LISA NUTT’S FRONT DOOR on a warm afternoon, she probably won’t answer. But don’t take it personally. Since redesigning the landscape of her North Little Rock home, Lisa doesn’t spend much time inside the house. You are more likely to find her in the backyard—walking in the shade of her Japanese maples, listening to the calm trickle of the koi pond’s waterfall, or getting her hands dirty in flowerbeds that are thick with ferns, begonias and purple salvia. “I’m never inside the house anymore,” Lisa says while standing on the flagstone walkway that weaves through her meticulously planned outdoor oasis. On the grounds of the stately home, tiers of flowerbeds slope downward toward the dock, where the calm waters of the neighborhood lake lap softly against the family’s favorite fishing spot. To Lisa and her husband, David, their roots in this land and home run as deep as the roots of the giant oak trees that canopy the yard. “David’s grandfather lived here,” Lisa says about the home, which was built in 1959. “David grew up fishing on this spot.” When Lisa and David had the chance to purchase the home in 1989, they didn’t have to give it much thought. Moving in felt like coming home. Then, the backyard consisted of some azalea bushes and a large grassy slope that extended to the water. In

2005, the Nutts decided to include landscaping with a remodel of the home. “We wanted to have an outdoor space, something that would get us outside,” Lisa says. Within six months, the blank canvas of the grassy slope became a lush garden getaway complete with a spa, pond and a colorful variety of flowers, plants and trees—including Japanese maples, which are among Lisa’s favorites. This once-plain outdoor space is now thick with sweetbay magnolias, hawthorn, hostas, daylilies, hydrangea and several types of ferns. Creeping juniper spills over stone flowerbed borders, and dogwood trees shade the dock. The new design blends seamlessly with the garden’s older elements, including crape myrtles planted along the side of the home long before the remodel and now reaching beyond the home’s second level. As the garden has matured, outdoor family dinners have moved from the upstairs balcony to the roomy table for eight on the flagstone patio. Stairs lead to the space from the kitchen, making for easy access. At the edge of the azalea-bordered koi pond, chairs surround a small table next to the fire pit, inviting friends and family to gather on cool evenings. And the Nutts’ children and grandchildren enjoy egg hunts around the flowerbeds on Easter. While most families go away for vacation, Lisa and David don’t feel the need to go anywhere. “We used to have a lake house, but we decided to just make this our lake house,” she says. “This space is special, and we never get tired of looking at it.”

An outdoor dining space has become Lisa and David’s favorite spot for family meals. Nearby, a Japanese lace leaf maple and azalea bushes surround a spa, designed and installed by Brooks Pool Co. A lower-level patio overlooks the koi pond and fire pit. On the dock, weathered teak furniture provides a place to take in the view of the North Little Rock lake. A graceful swan frequents the Nutts’ dock, but don’t be fooled by his beauty. “We’ve named him ‘Grumpy,’” Lisa says.

WATERFRONT LIVING

Boulders on the rocky shoreline inspired the native stone home, built in the 1960s as one of the original residences on Eden Isle. When a young family of ďŹ ve from Little Rock recently purchased it, designer Heather Chadduck worked with them on an extensive renovation.

38

The focal point of the open living space is the rope and iron Luigi chandelier from Solaria Lighting. Verellen sofas and Lee Industries swivel chairs sport pillows covered in Lulu DK outdoor fabrics and group around a custom coffee table with a boat propeller as a base. Ceiling, beams and wood walls throughout the living spaces were updated with coats of Sherwin-Williams’ Agreeable Gray. In the bar area, Lee Industries stools are covered in a wipeable faux ostrich fabric.

At Home in Arkansas: Tell us about the background of this Eden Isle home and how the renovation project began. Designer Heather Chadduck: The house was built in the 1960s by Dallas-based architect David George, who also designed the Red Apple Inn, Eden Isle’s iconic lodge. The house was in need of some major repairs and renovation when my clients, who live in Little Rock, purchased it. The wife is a close childhood friend, and she immediately enlisted my help. One of the first descriptions she gave me was that it’s the kind of place you want your ashes scattered—it’s that peaceful and beautiful. It seems your clients immediately connected with the site. How did they envision using the house? The house was intended as a weekend getaway destination for their family, which includes three children. My clients wanted the house to be comfortable, approachable and not too decorated. They envisioned bringing extended family and friends up for long weekends on the lake, which made comfort and durability a must. What updates were needed to make this house an accommodating getaway? There’s a main house and a guesthouse. We decided to update the guesthouse first so the family had a place to stay while the main house was under renovation, which lasted an entire year. The guesthouse received a new roof and we refurbished the kitchenette and bath. My client had the brilliant idea to turn an unused closet into a stack of three built-in bunk beds for their children, complete with a ladder to access the bunks. The main house needed a new roof and modernizing throughout as well, with plumbing, tile and countertops updated. We upgraded the kitchen with new appliances, a Carrara marble backsplash to lighten the room up, a grid of nautical lighting and hand-poured concrete countertops to blend with the stone columns flanking the kitchen.

39

The living and dining spaces needed a cosmetic overhaul, with fresh paint and repairs to some leaking windows. My clients opted to add a new fireplace on the screened porch, as they envisioned gathering around it often. We mimicked the fireplaces throughout the house and added a large hearth for seating. The most major overhaul was the master bathroom, which suffered from an unfortunate 1980s remodel. What had been done and how did you modify the space? The master bedroom has a stone fireplace, vaulted ceilings and a beautiful view to the lake, but the bath had been renovated with low sheetrock ceilings and a difficult floor plan. We opened the space up to the bedroom with a series of barn-style sliding doors on center with the window, for views to the lake. The low ceilings were removed to expose the same roofline seen throughout the house. A fabulous freestanding Waterworks tub was installed to ground the space and a pair of custom his-andher vanities were tucked into opposing sides of the room. An oversized, handmade chandelier and custom sconces were added along with a wall of gorgeous white draperies for privacy. In the end, the most problematic room became a favorite spot in the house.

Shades of blue, green and gray are used in accessories in the living space and form the basis for the home’s color palette, reflecting the hues of the surrounding hillside. The living space opens to a screened porch, where a new fireplace was added and flanked with symmetric storage areas for firewood. Kingsley Bate teak furnishings pair with a Dash & Albert outdoor rug to create a weather-resistant sitting area. The ceiling is painted Sherwin-Williams’ Topsail.

40

41

In the kitchen, the original cabinetry was refinished and the room was updated with a honed Carrara marble tile backsplash, SubZero appliances and new concrete countertops custom poured by contractor Ike Harcourt. A leaking skylight in the dining room was repaired, accented with Cornice lanterns by Visual Comfort, creating an alcove that Chadduck says “glows like a beacon in the evening.” The zinc-topped dining table was custom made to fit the narrow space; host chairs are from Lee Industries.

The rocky waterfront setting is reflected in the architecture of the house, with wood and stone used prominently. How did that figure into your design process? With so much glass and rock used in the building of the home, there is an indoor/outdoor feeling that could not be ignored. That figured into our color palette of green, gray, white and blue, which the homeowner and I pulled directly from photos we took outside of mossy 42

rocks, dogwood trees, the sky and the water. There’s also a strong symmetry to the architecture, which made furniture placement fairly straightforward, and an open floor plan, which demanded a natural and consistent color palette that flows seamlessly. What elements did you incorporate to help this house hold up to heavy waterfront use? I worked closely with the homeowners to handpick each piece of furniture, fabric and the decorating details

A freestanding rectangular tub from Waterworks and a Lowcountry Originals iron chandelier create an inviting setting in the renovated master bathroom. to make sure each would stand up to frequent use and accommodate family and friends. In the living room, sofas are long enough to fit many guests, but streamlined so they don’t appear oversized. The adjacent dining room is narrow, so we custom made a long table that fits the space, yet can easily seat 10. We also added a zinc top to the table for durability. Side chairs are an easy-to-clean painted finish, and host and hostess dining chairs are upholstered in outdoor fabrics, as are many of the furnishings throughout both the main house and the guesthouse. My favorite is the faux ostrich fabric on the stools in the bar and kitchen—you can wipe it clean easily. On the screened porch, we used teak furnishings and ceramic garden stools to hold up to the elements. Sunbrella fabrics cover the cushions, and underfoot a striped all-weather rug reinforces the color palette. These spaces became so comfortable that the family spends as much time as possible here, even holidays.

45

In the guesthouse, which nestles into the hillside above the main residence, a closet space was turned into a trio of bunk beds. A Solaria Lighting chandelier and Lee Industries swivel chairs create a cozy sitting area. Curtains and pillows feature Perennials outdoor fabrics, and the custom bed is upholstered in Sunbrella sailcloth; a custom rug is made from Sunbrella fabrics as well. A small kitchen tucked into a niche sports white subway tile and a Carrara marble countertop. The woodwork is painted Sherwin-Williams’ Toque White.

At Home in Arkansas: How did the waterfront locale influence the design of your home? Homeowner Kathryn Miles: As soon as we saw the bluff lot, I envisioned a modern house inspired by our Arkansas surroundings and influenced by the architectural design of Frank Lloyd Wright. I refer to our style as organic modern and my husband, Joe, whimsically calls it contemporary prairie—Frank Lloyd Wright with a twist. What was your goal for the home’s design? We wanted to open the home up to its natural surroundings and allow it to blend into the landscape. I wanted guests to enter and immediately be drawn through the home to the terrace where they see nothing but the Ozarks—and they are. Guests don’t even notice the house until they return indoors to sit and visit. You mention entertaining, and your home seems spacious enough to accommodate a crowd. Our house provides the best of both worlds—it’s both open for entertaining and cozy enough for relaxing. The kitchen was designed to be a part of the living area so that guests can be comfortable anywhere. In most gatherings, guests tend to migrate to the kitchen no matter how large or beautiful the living room might be. Our design allows guests to mingle and still feel connected in a free-flowing space. It works well for parties, or when it’s just the two of us. You drew the home’s blueprint all on your own, and oversaw the building process from beginning to end. What are a few attributes that made this your dream home? I knew the location was a dream setting immediately. I went on an exhaustive search for an existing design plan, but found nothing to my satisfaction. So, I purchased a CAD program online and drew a fairly simple plan that takes full advantage of the breathtaking site. Every room had to have a view of the river and valley below. The design truly meshes with our personalities. It’s open, yet cozy. The floor-to-ceiling

windows allow us to always be in sight of the natural beauty of the area. The views are spectacular during all kinds of weather conditions, and nothing is more inspiring than a full moon at midnight. Those oor-to-ceiling windows encompass much of your home and do offer breathtaking views. Does this provide most of your lighting? Yes, the bank of windows facing south provides our home with plenty of natural light. We consider the windows pieces of art, with a different landscape scene for us every day. The mostly neutral color palette indoors seems to mesh with the setting outdoors. The natural beauty of the surrounding area provided the best color palette imaginable. I took the interior colors from the stone we used in the house, which was quarried in the nearby town of Leslie. It has shades of 53

burnt orange, gray, taupe, tan, brown and black. Original art my husband and I have collected adds a little punch of unexpected and unmatched color to the scheme. How do you use your home’s outdoor space and what inspired its design? The outdoors, similar to the indoor spaces, were designed around the setting. The front was landscaped with the contours of the land. Dry creek beds were created along the drainage lines, and a smattering of pine trees and dogwoods enhance the surrounding natural landscape. Sun-loving, low-maintenance plants and large rocks help to make the yard easy to tend. Near the entrance, a small water feature with goldďŹ sh entertains our grandchildren. We usually use the terrace on the south side of the house where the oor is the same native stone as much of the interior. The cable railing is virtually invisible, allowing an undeterred view of the river and surrounding Ozark Mountains. Where is your respite at the end of a long day? I enjoy relaxing on the upper terrace and taking in the beauty of the area or preparing dinner while the view accompanies me. Joe typically has his eyes on a book while his thoughts drift downstream on the White River.

JULIE SHAW

OCCUPATION: I’m an interior designer and have operated my own business for 26 years. BEST KNOWN FOR: Renovating and refurbishing older homes, fi rst in Memphis, where I was based for 20 years, and now in Arkansas as well, where I moved six years ago. My style in general involves adding character and an eclectic look, so that a new reno still has an established personality. LIVES IN: A stone and cedar 1950s waterfront home that has been added to and renovated through the years and is on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs. MY FAVORITE PART OF MY HOUSE IS: the original stone patio, which I love because it’s so comfortable and cozy, with teak furnishings, outdoor wicker lounge chairs and lots of plants. I’M MOST AT HOME: surrounded by wonderful artwork, antiques, furnishings, fabrics and other elements that we’ve chosen to add to our home. Our living area is full of our family’s favorite things—some with sentimental value and others from travels. When I’m in that room, I can look out at the water while enjoying our collections, and it’s an inspiring setting. Photography: Nancy Nolan 80
