From The Editor in Chief
“You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.” One of the absolute best parts of my job is going behind the scenes, so to speak, into houses throughout the state. Since our homes offer such amazing insight into what our lives are like, each project we feature provides a new opportunity to see firsthand how Arkansans live. The homeowners I meet are so welcoming and eager to share what it is about their houses they love most, and these are usually the exact things that make us all interested to see more. This unquantifiable factor of “home personality” plays a major role in my decisions about what makes the cut for our pages, and it truly is magic when a homeowner and a home are a perfect fit. This month’s issue, “Design at its Best,” is one that I have been especially excited to share with you since it first began to take shape. These dwellings are great examples of the harmony I love to see between resident and home. Not only are the spaces full of stunning design and fun ideas to inspire you, the projects themselves also brought together homeowners and designers who either started a great friendship or further built on their close bond. It’s amazing to see home designs that exceed the expectations of everyone involved—even from the earliest phases of planning—and to also know that lifelong relationships have been formed in the process. When I first visited the Bottin home (page 40), I was blown away by the extraordinary level of detail in the design. By taking just the right amount of time needed and listening to the guidance of their designers, the Bottins’ vision for their home was masterfully planned and executed. Similarly, the Fayetteville home of Paige Arnold, featured on page 54, instantly captured my imagination with its light and youthful spirit. When you walk in the front door, you immediately feel soothed by the neutral palette, simple patterns, and finishes that feel very fresh and original. As you flip the pages of our June issue to tour these two homes, it’s my hope that you get a strong sense—as I did—of the relationships and lives that make them beautiful.
As we go to press with this issue, our thoughts and concerns turn to those affected by the devastating tornadoes in central Arkansas.

Style/Latest Northwest Arkansas has a new destination for colorful women’s wear. The Pink Pig, which opened in May, is Arkansas’ only Lilly Pulitzer boutique. Owner Erin Bridges is also the proprietor of Tesori Bridal and Formal, which is located next door to The Pink Pig in Fayetteville’s Single Tree Plaza. She notes that Lilly Pulitzer has long been a popular item in Tesori, so when the shopping space next to it became available, she couldn’t think of a better complement to her bridal and formalwear store than a Lilly shop. While the store will primarily carry Lilly Pulitzer items, including dresses, accessories, and paper goods, they will also have other contemporary lines such as Alice & Trixie and Yoana Baraschi. 577 East Millsap Road, Fayetteville, thepinkpigar.com
BASSETT FURNITURE
On May 1st, Bassett Furniture officially opened the doors at their new location in West Little Rock’s Pleasant Ridge Town Center. Moving from their previous location on Markham to the newly constructed showroom allowed the home furnishings retailer to create a new design studio where customers can choose from more than 1,000 fabrics to customize everything from headboards to ottomans, most of which are made in the USA. The store also added three design consultants to help with all your renovation needs. 11525 Cantrell Road, Suite 1050, Little Rock, (501) 217-3860, bassettfurniture.com

FLOWERS & HOME of HOT SPRINGS
Flowers & Home now has a second location in Hot Springs. Carrying the same great designs as their Bryant store, the recently opened shop features furniture, lamps, rugs, and accessories, as well as an amazing fresh floral selection and natural-style silk botanicals. Owners Tom Bynum and Monroe Cranford say they are excited about the second location and look forward to working with the Hot Springs community. In addition to their in-store items, Flowers & Home also offers full-service floral design for everyday events, weddings, and special occasions. 245 Cornerstone Boulevard, Hot Springs, (501) 525-0444, flowersandhome.com
Euna Mae’s
Located in the heart of Springdale, just two blocks south of Sunset Avenue, Euna Mae’s is a treat for cooks, bakers, and anyone who loves dinnerware, dishes, and cuisine. The shop, which opened on May 9th, pays homage in both name and style to owner Amy Nelson Hannon’s grandmother, Euna Mae, who Hannon says always served her family with the best homemade dishes and treats to show her love. The shop carries lines such as LeCreuset and Nordic Ware alongside reproduction Jadeite, olive wood serving pieces, and a smattering of pie plates, platters, and even honey and jam. “We have a great mix of purposeful pieces and pretties,” says the shop owner of the nostalgic and heirloom-quality wares. For recipes and ways to use the cookware, be sure to visit the store’s website and blog. 1503 Carley Road, Springdale, (479) 419-9690, eunamaes.com 14 At Home in Arkansas | June 2014

Little Rock As the central point and capital city of our state, Little Rock is home to a wide variety of interior and exterior design resources and stores, locally owned clothing and gift boutiques, and delicious dining establishments. EATS & SWEETS Start your adventure with a breakfast bite at Rosalia’s Family Bakery, located on Kavanaugh Boulveard. Have the croissant you’ve been craving with a chai tea latte. When you build up your appetite again, we recommend lunch at Boulevard Bread Company, which has several locations around the city and serves a mix of fresh salads and sandwiches, as well as charcuterie, artisan cheeses, and other local products. Keep your eyes peeled for their baked sweets, too. Later in the day, when you’re looking for an afternoon treat, head to the Green Corner Store, located in the popular South Main (SoMa) area for handcrafted ice cream by Loblolly Creamery. Pair it with a fizzy soda to cool down on a hot summer day. Finally, for a contemporary fine dining experience, we suggest dinner at the River Market’s new hot spot Cache
(501-850-0265, cachelittlerock.com). Start your meal with oysters, followed by the prosciutto-wrapped rabbit or hearth-fired cowboy rib-eye steak. LOCAL FINDS If the man in your life needs a wardrobe update, head to Bauman’s (501-227-8797, baumans.com) for the latest in menswear. Whether you’re seeking USA-made Hamilton dress shirts, Creed cologne, a new Peter Millar sweater, or a hand-stitched Oxford suit, they have pieces to fit every man’s style. Next, head just across the street and pop into Catering to You (501-6149030, cateringtoyouinlittlerock.com). While this local favorite does cater to any event, they specialize in more than just exceptional food, offering a variety of serving pieces, napkins, Razorback accessories, aprons, and more neccessities to create a polished event. If you’re looking for the perfect present, don’t
miss their selection of wedding and hostess gifts, including Vietri dinnerware, candles, and delicious sauces and jellies. From there, we suggest going west on Cantrell Road to shop at Pleasant Ridge Town Center. Spice up your decor with a visit to Embellish (501-223-6965), a home goods store with a wide selection of furnishings and accessories. Freshen up your living room with one of their

Treat yourself to a new Essie summer nail color or Archipelago coconut sugar scrub while you’re there. Finally, step just next door to Beyond Cotton II (501-221-1539) for fabulous fashion finds including G. women’s clothing store that describes their style as “classic with a twist.” You’ll want to venture here to find a classy, fresh, and chic ensemble for your next summer event or party. Owner Pamela Rees stocks the shop with a wide selection of costume jewelry, vintage pieces, handbags, clutches, and shoes, in addition to clothing lines such as Joie and Michael Stars. West Little Rock is also home to The Label (501-367-8280), one of the best places to find daywear for men of all ages. We recommend a colorful, summer Jared Lang button-down or Robert Graham tee for casual weekend style. We also love to shop the Heights area of the metro for fashion and accessories, as well as home décor. Don’t miss the recently opened Southern Accented (501-747-1150, southernaccented.com), a boutique offering everything from party dresses to hostess gifts, all tailored to the modern woman’s style. The cheerful shop features lines such as Bobi (which makes soft tees that are ideal for warm weather) and Rifle Paper Co. along with fun frocks to attend any summer gathering, an assortment of jewelry and handbags, and many other accessories. Stroll down Kavanaugh Boulevard to Tulips (501-614-7343, tulipsarkansas. com), a hip women’s boutique that carries the latest in contemporary trends. Collector Davis Tillman Hometown Hot Springs His Obsession Primitive, vintage, and ball-worthy masks How He Became Interested Tillman’s parents were long-time collectors who would later start the family’s famed eponymous antiques shop, Tillman’s Antiques, which is located on Central Avenue in Hot Springs. Their love of antiques and vintage pieces manifested itself in Davis at an early age while they were living in Washington, D.C. Attending the area’s auctions and markets with his parents on the weekends, the young Tillman developed a particular penchant for masks of all kinds, and began to seek them out at the shows. Prized Pieces Everything from rudimentary wooden masks made by members of the African Dan tribe to more colorful, elaborate pieces used in Japanese theater. June 2014 | athomearkansas.com 31
Life/Collecting
We hear you were quite young when you first developed an interest in masks. When did you purchase your first piece? Yes, I was very young. I went to auctions and antique shows with my parents almost every weekend, and I became interested when I was only about 14 years old. I saved money from my jobs— popping popcorn and baking pizzas—to purchase three Japanese Noh theater masks in an auction. I actually had my dad bid on the first pieces I bought because I was so young. These were the first masks of any monetary or historical significance that I bought. Why are the masks so alluring? Well, it’s interesting because masks have been around for 9,000 years, and they are used all over the world. Everyone from the Greeks to the Chinese to the Egyptians have used masks in some form, whether it was for ritual, hunting, theater, or any other number of purposes. It really piqued my interest to put these pieces next to one another and see so many differences and yet so many similarities in the world’s cultures. Where do you display the masks? Are they a part of your décor? I have many of them hanging on the walls of my downtown condo in Hot Springs. We also get to use a number of the Venetian and carnival-style masks each year at the Baron’s Ball, which is a masquerade ball in Hot Springs that benefits the Levi Hospital.

Sister design team Talena Ray (seated) and Mona Thompson of Providence Design are renowned for their ability to incorporate found objects and European influence into interiors. Below: A flagstone drive greets visitors to the West Little Rock house. Facing page: A French bleached-wood cabinet, topped with antique olive oil jars and wine jugs, accentuates the breakfast area. A chandelier with a burlap drum shade illuminates the trestle table for casual meals.
hen homeowners Donna and Jim Bottin decided to move to West Little Rock to be closer to family, they thought they knew what they wanted. “The plan was to do an open-concept house, similar to what we had before,” says Donna. “But we wanted it to be a little more intimate and cozier,” she adds. Enter designers Talena Ray and Mona Thompson of Providence Design. The talented design duo, who are best known for incorporating one-of-a-kind architectural elements and adding European flair, searched high and low for custom details to give the Bottins’ home an authentic old-world influence. “Talena and I came on board before the first drawings were complete, so we were able to make a lot of special tweaks,” says Thompson. “The home was two years in the making, and everywhere we could we went for an authentic finish just to make it that much more special,” says Thompson. “As we developed ideas, we looked for certain pieces, but we were also inspired by things that we found along the way and wanted to create new ways to use them.” These special details begin at the home’s entry, where double iron doors with glass inserts and a pair of oversize gas lanterns punctuate the Texas-limestone façade. Just inside, guests enter the dining room through a pair of wooden antique doors, which Ray and Thompson found on a trip to the Round Top antiques fair and incorporated into the home’s architectural design. The design team had the doors waxed and sealed to preserve the finish, and a local iron fabricator created an elaborate transom to fill the gap between the top of the doors and the arched entrance to the room. To blend the elements of the doors, a concrete table is juxtaposed with an antique French sideboard in the monochromatic and texture-rich space. The room’s new iron chandelier also received an old-world treatment by way of a custom paint finish and the addition of large crystal prisms.

Clockwise from top left: Patterned draperies in the breakfast room continue the home’s palette of white, gray, and yellow. An adjacent laundry room and butler’s pantry feature reclaimed brick flooring, wine storage, and additional refrigerator and freezer space concealed behind cabinet doors. Facing page: The heavily-veined granite countertops combined with the diamond-shaped, mixed-stone backsplash give the kitchen design color and movement. Ray and Thompson commissioned the iron light fixture centered over the island. 46 At Home in Arkansas | June 2014

The master bedroom adds a richer hue—deep royal blue—to the palette. Pulled from the Oushak rug, the color is repeated on an expanse of velvet draperies and again on the bed. Iron and weathered wood accessories connect the room’s design to the rest of the home.
“This house is a style departure for the Bottins, so almost everything is new, but we didn’t want it to look like that,” says Thompson. “The found pieces give it that ‘collected-over-time’ look.” However, not even the new pieces were immune to the design team’s attention, meaning many items were refinished or reupholstered to contribute to the aesthetic. “We tweaked pretty much everything,” Thompson says with a laugh. “It was really quite fun!” Though the home is filled with salvaged pieces found from Europe to Texas, local craftsmen brought them to life with custom design work in wood, iron, and stone. Opposite the home’s dining room, the music room features a cast-stone fireplace that is reminiscent of a French country manor and is complemented by a pair of cabinets with wire inserts and cremone bolts. In the comfortable family room, another set of built-in cabinets features a graceful arch that mimics the doorways and hides a television set, allowing modern amenities to work into the design seamlessly and without interrupting the flow. The lively floral fabric on the pair of armchairs, which includes grays and a touch of yellow, set the color palette for the space. Throughout the home, reproduction Oushak rugs in muted tones soften the heavier elements of stone and iron, while hickory flooring and the coffered ceiling’s custom finish contribute to the warm feeling. Alongside the kitchen’s limestone archways, iron lanterns accenuate the entry and hint at something special beyond. Custom details and three different finishes on the cabinetry give it the look of free-standing furniture, which was customary in early European kitchens. Similary, the range and hood are recessed into a large limestone arch in a manner that is reminiscent of fireplaces in colonial kitchen houses. A dark, marbelized slab of granite with bold veining provided color inspiration for the kitchen. Even the most utilitarian space in the house—a combined laundry room and butler’s pantry—received a full-fledged country-manor treatment. Reclaimed brick pavers, elaborate iron hardware, and louvered doors that conceal a refrigerator and freezer are all thoughtful details that add to the appeal. A freestanding cast-stone tub surrounded by mosaic tiles, a double entry walk-in shower, and numerous architectural relics give the master bath the feeling of an ancient bathhouse fitted with modern amenities. The powder room received the same timeless, quality-focused treatment with limestone walls and a wall-mounted sink carved from a block of marble.

Outdoors, the staggered flagstone pavers in the dining porch and around the pool blend with nature, while the pool’s deep aqua color and gently sloping “tanning ledge” were inspired by a resort pool the Bottin’s spotted on vacation. More than just the home of their dreams, the Bottins gained lifelong friends throughout the two-year home design process. “I really can’t put it into words,” says Donna of working with Ray and Thompson. “They definitely brought the wow factor with dynamic ideas, plus the willingness to please us and accommodate our desires. Fifteen years ago I said I would never build a house again, but they made it such a fabulous experience.”

f I can’t be at the beach every day, I want to feel like I am,” says homeowner Paige Arnold. After owning property in the popular Rosemary Beach community along Florida’s Scenic Highway 30A, Arnold fell in love with the area’s laid-back lifestyle. “It’s a very casual mix of modern and eclectic,” she says of the beachfront region’s signature style, which often features a cool palette of ocean-inspired blues and greens, slipcovered furniture, and weathered wood. “I wanted our home here in Arkansas to feel almost like you’re on a vacation—a sort of Rosemary Beach meets Fayetteville look,” she adds. With this thought as a guiding principle, she called on her friends Kimberly Harper and Cynthia Howey Tune of Harper Howey Interiors to bring seaside style to the new-construction home she shares with her teenage son and daughter. Arnold not only counts the design team among her friends, but she has also worked with the duo on her previous homes, so the collaboration felt as natural as the style she wanted to create. “She has such a clean, simple look,” says Harper of Arnold’s personal taste. To infuse this feel throughout the home, the team started in one of the home’s most-used spaces—the open-concept kitchen and family room. Crisp shades of white—seen on the cabinetry, Carrara marble countertops, walls, and ceiling—create the backdrop for

To bring the look of an elegant beachside home to Northwest Arkansas, the team at Harper Howey Interiors started with a neutral base that includes white walls and cabinetry along with tan and cream furnishings. Bold lighting and accent pillows bring in colors reminiscent of a lush seascape. Rich, textured fabrics and a mirrored coffee table add a hint of glamour to the relaxed room.
the space and evoke an overarching feeling of calm. Casual, functional seating, including low barstools that don’t obstruct the view from the island into the family room and long, linen-covered benches at the breakfast nook’s dining table, makes the space crowd-friendly without feeling stuffy or cramped. Arnold opted to forgo window treatments to allow natural light indoors and to keep with the openness of the home’s floor plan. Lighting and accessories in the amped-up blue and green shades of turquoise and lime add color to the otherwise neutral room. The team at Harper Howey extended the same look and feel to the home’s two teen hangout spaces. Daughter Spencer Paige has plenty of room to work on homework, read magazines, or chat with friends in her colorful common room. For a different take on the home’s palette, a deep navy trellis-patterned wallpaper by Schumacher creates an accent wall, while a bright magenta covers the ceiling and several of the room’s furnishings to add a girlish flair. A lighter blue palette, which also stemmed from a wallpaper sample the family loved, covers the girl’s bedroom. A mix of relaxed bedding, whimsical light fixtures, and feminine details finish the restful retreat. Downstairs, the home’s basement is a favorite spot for Arnold’s son Chase to host friends. “This portion of the house was actually an afterthought,” she says of the lower level, which they decided to finish after the home’s completion. The look of the upstairs family room carries over to this space with additional beach-style design elements such as the flat-board paneling and open shelving in the small kitchen area, and vivid blues and greens used as accents throughout the room. Arnold had the bright, preppy Ping-Pong table custom built after seeing a similar version in a Rosemary Beach show house.

The kitchen is one of the family’s most-used spaces, so it not only had to be in line with the style, but also functional. Commercial-grade appliances and a restaurant-style pull-down faucet making cooking and cleaning a breeze, while backless barstools that fit neatly under the island allow the cook to see what’s going on in the family room. Facing page: The family’s formal dining room is used for holidays and special gatherings. An upholstered bench is the perfect perch for children and brings a sunny yellow into the room’s palette. On the table, a fresh floral display from Pigmint includes hydrangeas, lilacs, lisianthuses, tulips, and lemons to coordinate with the palette.

The home’s slightly more formal areas—the living room, dining room, and entry—keep within the color palette and include painted, weathered, or whimsical details to connect them with the rest of the home. For example, the dining room features a cut velvet covered bench, which echoes the style of the one seen in the breakfast nook, and the clean white backdrop is ever present throughout these rooms. Many furnishings from Arnold’s previous home found new life in the dining and living rooms as well. A loveseat and set of chairs were recovered to provide seating for four in the cozy living room, while a large mirror by Hickory Chair makes an eye-catching statement and creates the illusion of more space. Across the entry hall, an existing buffet was refreshed with a coat of gray chalk paint and a wood-andiron table pairs with skirted slipcovered Parsons chairs for effortless elegance. At the end of the day, whether Arnold is hosting a girl’s night in, or her children are having friends from the church youth group visit, the home is both a serene retreat and a fun-inspiring getaway for all who enter—much like a beach vacation itself.

The finished basement is a favorite hangout for Arnold’s son and his friends. Comfortable and durable furniture provides plenty of lounge space for the teenage boys. Arnold repurposes pillar candle stands and glass hurricanes as decorative snack servers. Below, left: A grouping of hanging plates accents a contemporary acrylic-leg bench in the family room just off the kitchen. Below, right: The home’s clean aesthetic is infused with hints of brown in Arnold’s son Chase’s room. Facing page: Arnold’s teen daughter’s bedroom is a mix of comfortable fabrics and contemporary, feminine details.

Navy and pink make for a preppy and fun color palette in the teen girls’ hangout. Imperial Trellis wallpaper by Schumacher creates a whimsical accent wall, while a bright magenta ceiling offers girlish glamour. Paired with a white, tree-inspired table by Stray Dog Designs, two upholstered, high-back chairs from Lighting Emporium provide additional pattern and coordinate with the design.

End Notes
Chefs’ Favorite R estaurants “I love Little Rock’s Pho Thanh My. Good soup just heals the soul. It reminds me of living in the Northwest with it raining outside eating at this little Vietnamese pho place with my daughter when she was a baby. As a chef I always go with the little locally owned places because they are always the best. The owners care and are still passionate about what they serve.” —Matthew Cooper, Executive Chef, Cache, Little Rock
“When I go out to eat, my favorite place in town [Fayetteville] is
Meiji Japanese Cuisine and Sushi.
Chef Darwin Beyer is a creative and gracious sushi master. His dishes are so fresh and well prepared that it’s hard to beat. He can turn sushi into flowers, birds, and even art.” —Maudie Schmitt, Chef,
“I love the way Chef Scott Rains at Table 28 in Little Rock gives a simple ingredient so much charm and flavor. I’ve always enjoyed his fare—it never disappoints!” —Diana Bratton, Chef and Owner, Café 1217 and Taco Mama, Hot Springs
“ Ciao Baci in Little Rock is great, because you can go to just enjoy the food and relax—either with someone or at the bar. You can grab a drink, a delicious full meal, or a nice wine and appetizer. It has a high level of service, yet is very laid back with a home-like feel.” —Alexis Jones, Chef, Natchez, Little Rock
