The one thing about Arkansas weather you can depend on is that you can never depend on it. We refer to it like an erratic old friend we’ve all known for years. “You know how crazy Arkansas weather can be!” we say fondly after a snowstorm in March or on days when we use both the heat and air conditioning within a 24-hour period. LeeAnn and Gary Ingle, the homeowners whose pool and patio we feature on page 39, knew to prepare for blazing Arkansas summers, so they had a nifty feature called a “pool chiller” installed. When warm days arrive, they can be in cool water with the touch of a button—now, that’s convenient! The weather leading up to our photo shoot, however, was not so predictable, forcing us to reschedule not once, not twice, but three times. Luckily, the third time was a charm and the pool looked just as inviting as it does on a warm June day. Similarly, the unusually chilly morning we shot the Gilbrech home featured on page 54, we were styling for summer fun in our heaviest winter coats. With all that said, sometimes the stars align and we get to enjoy spending a beautiful day in a beautiful location. That was the case with the Barnett home on Lake Hamilton, seen on page 42. As the weather heats up this summer, we’re hoping for some good climate karma and plenty of opportunities to take things outside. My fiancé and I love to entertain outdoors. There’s nothing quite as nice as a warm night, food on the grill and a frozen cocktail in the blender, but we occasionally spice things up with a seated dinner and hors d’oeuvres, too. This month, At Home teamed up with Tipton Hurst’s Chris Norwood to host an al fresco summer soirée, with easy tips and tricks to inspire your own get together. We loved Chris’ take on simple arrangements in sunny colors—no fuss necessary. From flowers to food, our summer entertaining special on page 64 will make your next party a breeze—weather permitting, of course.

Fun updates for classic pieces

“Repurposed. Recycled. Reinvented. Reloved.” Using this mantra, Sharon Cowell opened the doors to Reinvented Vintage—an environmentally responsible shop where you can reinvent dated furnishings and shop for décor. Cowell hosts paint workshops for anyone who wishes to refurbish their own pieces or choose one from the shop’s stash. A leader in the industry, Reinvented Vintage is the only Arkansas store to carry MMS milk paint and Maison Blanche’s chalk-based paint, a velvety formula that will adhere to almost any surface. 1415 Breckenridge Drive, Suite A, Little Rock, (240) 305-4804, reinvented-vintage.com

Sustainable practices and preserving town history were top of mind when Tara & Co. Fine Jewelry owners Rachael and Van Simpson began building their current 3,300-square-foot store. The location was the former home of Searcy’s First National Bank building, and while the showroom is new, the original vault was left intact and is the focal point of the space. Repurposed lumber from a 1902 Louisiana homestead was used for the flooring, adding an additional sustainable aspect to the space, which was designed by Stuller Interiors. The shop now features a designer rings showcase and new lines including Sylvie engagement rings, Michele watches and Le Vian Chocolate diamonds. 2719 E Race Avenue, Searcy, (501) 268-4684, taracodiamonds.com

Showroom Expansion

Little Rock’s ABC Block and Brick will open their new showroom this summer, featuring a 3,000-square-foot indoor space as well as an 8,500-square-foot outdoor area. You can expect to find indoor and outdoor furniture selections, as well as natural and cultured stone options from new lines including Slimrock, which features natural stones from the Arkansas River Valley. ABC Block and Brick designed the space to be not only a showroom, but also an educational center for homeowners. 7720 Interstate 30, Little Rock, (501) 455-2027, abcblock.com

Hot Springs A bustling arts scene, numerous design shops and plenty of options for delectable dining make this lakeside town a year-round favorite

When it comes to Arkansas icons, you might think Hot Springs has more than its fair share. Long known for its historic architecture and tempting respite, Bathhouse Row remains a favorite destination for both travelers and locals alike. In a similar fashion, Oaklawn Park and events such as the Arkansas Derby often conjure up stories of weekend trips or day outings. Still, for many it’s the area’s natural beauty that first comes to mind, including the tree-lined shores of the city’s three nearby lakes—Lake Ouachita, Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine—as well as the majestic appeal of the Ouachita National Forest. Whatever it is that comes to mind when you think of Hot Springs, here are a few of our top places to visit when you’re in the area, as well as a few of our favorite resources for building and design if you plan to take up residence in this scenic city.

GONE FISHING

A Little Rock collector is hooked on vintage lures By Blythe Cate

photography: nancy nolan/styling: mandy keener

Hand lines were used as an affordable alternative to traditional rods and reels.

The Creek Chub Bait Co. made this 1950s “Injured Minnow” with a red side-scale finish.

Tins from Montgomery Ward and Ideal hold split shots or lead weights often used in bass fishing. A vintage Heddon casting plug was once used for practice.

Another favorite piece in Holmes’ collection, this Heddon Bait Co. “740 Punkinseed” is from the 1940s.

Tommy Holmes has been fishing since his teenage years, so it’s no surprise he was drawn to pick up a vintage fishing lure—to be exact, a “380 Yellow Shore Tiny Punkinseed” made by Heddon Bait Co.—thirty years ago on an antique hunt with his wife. Now, as a member of the Arkansas Tackle Collectors, Holmes fishes regularly at Greer’s Ferry Lake and meets with the other club members once a month over breakfast at Ed & Kay’s Restaurant in Benton. In fact, get-togethers with the other club members are one of the ways Holmes acquires new pieces. They trade amongst themselves and travel to shows across the United States, including the national event, which Holmes calls “a three-day fishing lure bonanza.” At these

This Creek Chub Bait Co. “Surface Dingbat” was used to catch bass. The 1938 model is shown in a special color known as Sable, made exclusively for Western Auto.

shows, he looks for three qualities in the lures: condition, rarity and age. The more rare, older collector items are known as “new in the box,” which means they have little wear-andtear and often accompany their original packaging. His wife found one such piece—which now happens to be Holmes’ favorite—at a show in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Heddon “740 Goldfish Punkinseed” was first made in 1940, but production halted when World War II hit. Because so few were made, the color is rare and hard to come by, making it all the more valuable and a musthave for Holmes’ collection. As with many of his more than 700 collectible lures, Holmes keeps this piece on display at his home, and enjoys its beauty each day. June 2013 | athomearkansas.com 33

“Some of m y best lures have come FROM trading With good friends.” —Tomm y Holmes

Holmes’ favorite piece, the “740 Punkinseed” in the rare Goldfish color, is used to catch bass. Made from 1941-50, this “Redwing Blackbird Injured Minnow” is from the Creek Chub Bait Co., which operated from the early 1900s through the late 1970s.

A “Giant Jointed Vamp” made by Heddon, the largest source for collectible lures, was used for striped bass fishing.

Punkinseed lures, such as this Heddon “Redhead Flitter,” are some of the most collectable items due to their bright colors and attractive shape.

From Creek Chub Bait Co., this box was made sometime between 1939 and 1946 and held the “Injured Minnow” seen at the top of the page.

MAKING WAVES School may be out for the summer, but things are heating up for HOPE Landing CEO Kristi Lowery By Rosemary Hallmark

As the president and CEO of a children’s therapeutic ranch, a regular day for El Dorado native and occupational therapist Kristi Lowery can include anything from horseback riding to parent support groups. Situated on a beautiful 80acre ranch just west of El Dorado, HOPE Landing provides occupational, physical and speechlanguage therapy to children with disabilities. “Each day varies for me,” Lowery says, “but every day, I look forward to seeing the smiles of the children and visiting with their families.” While many schools are quiet during the summer months, HOPE Landing is full of activity as children of all ages arrive onsite to attend therapy and camps. When Lowery has a moment to get away from the ranch’s high-energy scene, she heads to her parents’ home on Lake Hamilton. “I love being on the water—either on the boat, inner tubing or skiing,” she says. Lowery describes her summer style as casual and comfortable, with lots of jeans, sandals and jersey dresses, and she loves to experiment with patterns and colors. “However,” she says, “everyone that works at HOPE Landing has a pair of dusty boots under their desk.”

Throwing on a few pieces of gold jewelry is a simple way to take the look from the water to an evening out on the town.

BEFORE & AFTER

Backyard Bliss Photography: Nancy Nolan/Styling: Mandy Keener

A Little Rock couple designs their dream pool surrounded by all the amenities needed to host a fun-filled get-together By Izabella Simmons

Gary Ingle wanted to give his wife, LeeAnn, the birthday wish she had always dreamed of—a backyard swimming pool. Soon after learning of her husband’s generous gift, the couple met with longtime friend and pool designer Larry Rogers. Working closely with Larry, the Ingles set out to create a backyard that reflected their vision, including a pool area for entertainment and a retreat to enjoy year-round. The first step was to take stock of the unfinished backyard. A pre-project survey pleasantly surprised the couple. The property lines revealed a footprint larger than expected, which enabled them to accommodate multiple design elements—in both the pool and backyard itself. After months of work, the newly installed curved pool features a spa, an inviting swim-up bar and a cook center covered by a cabana. Multiple waterfall elements surround the pool to create unending harmony. “The spa is for me and Gary is in charge of the cook center,” says LeeAnn,

indicating who wears the chef’s hat among the two. The large stone fireplace is used during the cooler months and adds a warm element to social gatherings. One of the most unique elements of the space is the custom swim-up tabletop. “I wanted to personalize our pool, so I decided to imprint my nickname, Lola, into a table, ” says LeeAnn. Her work assistant helped sketch the non-traditional font, which reflects her fun-loving personality. From there, an internet search led her to a tile maker in San Diego, California, who designed the mosaic and then shipped it in twelve different pieces. “Putting the mosaic together was great fun—it was a big jigsaw puzzle and it took us several hours to assemble,” reminisces LeeAnn. While the tabletop element is visual, one of Gary’s favorite features is hidden—a pool chiller, which controls the water temperature. “With the push of a button I can instantly cool the pool water by fifteen degrees,” says Gary, who admits the feature comes in handy during the blazing Arkansas summer months. Because of their passion for the space and their enthusiasm to see it completed, the Ingles stayed engaged throughout the planning and building phases. They hand-selected every plant in the manicured garden and placed the stones in the garden with a dedicated purpose, putting a truly personal touch on a birthday present they are both sure to enjoy for years to come.

Limestone on the living area’s hearth wall matches the exterior of the Barnett’s contemporary lake house. Floor-to-ceiling windows greet guests with a breath-taking view of Lake Hamilton as they enter the home’s top level. Bamboo wraps from the ceiling to the floor to separate the dining area from the more casual family spaces of the home. A colorful painting by artist Heike Talbert was an anniversary gift from Robert to Sara. Its modern aesthetic complements the contemporary floating light globes over the table.

Sometimes you have to try something more than once before you get it just right. In Sara Barnett’s case, it took building four houses before she finally felt at home. “This time, I knew exactly what I wanted it to look like,” she says of her lakefront Hot Springs home. Barnett took her vision to architect David French—a friend from college with whom she had worked on a previous project—and he brought it to life. “The first set of plans was perfect; he captured exactly what I wanted,” she recalls. What she wanted was a sleek, contemporary home that took full advantage of the property’s expansive views of Lake Hamilton and the Ouachita National Forest beyond. Steel windows, rough-cut limestone quarried in Texas and bamboo accents give the home a decidedly modern, yet natural feel. “About halfway through the project, I started to have second thoughts, like I had gone too far,” she says. “I didn’t want it to look like an office building sitting on the lake.” But she persevered with the plan and trusted French’s ability to execute a warm, modern home for Barnett, her husband Robert and their combined six adult children, who visit frequently.

Custom cabinets, a mosaic tile backsplash and stainless steel appliances contribute to the kitchen’s sleek, contemporary feel, while a corner-shelving-area-turned-bar and a built-in espresso machine make the space feel lived in and comfortable. A large picture window across from the island lets the Barnetts know when guests arrive. The expansive kitchen opens to a breakfast nook and sitting area, where the pair can enjoy their morning coffee with a view of Lake Hamilton.

Sara describes the view from the master suite as “the best in the house.” Architect David French designed the floating vanities, which are constructed from bamboo and mimic the look of the dividing walls in the home’s dining area. Facing page: A freestanding porcelain tub is the perfect spot to soak in a view of nature’s beauty. The Barnett’s Weimaraner, Betsy, lounges on the cool tile floor.

The top-level entrance to the home feels like a contemporary interpretation of a sprawling ranch home. Once inside, you are immediately met with spectacular views of the lake filtered through the pine trees. The staircase in the multi-level foyer features custom wrought-iron railing—which can be found throughout the home—combined with a unique light fixture made of glass orbs that seem to drift independently from the ceiling to the bottom level. The main-level living area is divided into two spaces separated by a bamboo wall which wraps around the ceiling on both sides. On the left, the more formal living space is anchored by a contemporary chocolate-colored sectional next to a limestone wall that features a linear fireplace lit by small ceramic fire balls. A cast stone mantelpiece tops the fireplace setting. The living area shares space with a sleek dining table, where the couple often entertains. The fixture over the dining table is a scaled-down version of the foyer light. Thanks to the room’s southern exposure natural light is abundant year-round. On the other side of the bamboo dividing wall, things are slightly more casual. “This is a lake house, after all,” says Barnett. “We wanted it to relate to the setting. There is nothing too precious for wet dogs or bathing suits; it’s all very durable.” That livability starts from the ground up, where Barnett chose to install Italian porcelain tile instead of hardwoods or carpet. The tile’s varying widths and lengths lend a laid-back feel. 48 At Home in Arkansas | June 2013

A terrace bordered by painted wrought-iron rails runs the length of the back of the house. Just off the family sitting area, a covered porch features a dining table, grill, bar area and linear fireplace—all ideal for entertaining small or large groups.

In a similar style, the well-equipped kitchen is outfitted with custom bamboo cabinetry and opens to a sitting area and breakfast nook. A built-in plasma-screen television on one side and wood-burning fireplace on the other set the tone for the more relaxed family space. Throughout the home, furnishings are kept simple—there are certainly no oversized lamp shades or fussy window treatments blocking the view. “I have finally learned to do what I like, not what is expected,” Barnett says of the sparse decoration. “In this house, I didn’t worry so much about the design, I just let the fabulous architecture and the view speak for themselves.” The master bedroom’s en suite bath certainly takes full advantage of both the property’s views and privacy, as a freestanding tub floats in front of a picture window. French designed the room’s floating vanities and topped them with Caesarstone. Around the corner a luxurious teak-floored steam shower adds to the home’s nature-inspired décor. Just outside, the main-level terrace is equipped for four-season entertaining with built-in seating, a linear fireplace and a minibar. Below, a black-bottom salt-water pool with an infinity edge runs along the home’s exterior. The pool deck opens to a downstairs sitting room and a collection of bedrooms where the couple’s children stay—and bring plenty of guests—when they visit. At the water’s edge, a boardwalk runs the length of the property, allowing access to the lake. Despite this convenient feature, so far, the couple has done more gazing at the lake than swimming or boating. “The last house was supposed to be my last project,” says Barnett. But the property’s spectacular views convinced her to give building her dream home just one more shot.

low-key living

A busy family of six settles into a casual, rustic retreat on the pristine shores of Eden Isle

Overlooking Greer’s Ferry Lake, the expansive back porch is a popular gathering spot for Gilbrech family meals, impromptu games of football and relaxing afternoons.

June 2013 | athomearkansas.com 55

The Gilbrech family didn’t move into their newly constructed lakeside residence until last year, but Eden Isle has always felt like their home. Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Ozarks between Greer’s Ferry Lake and Heber Springs, Eden Isle is where Mary Noel Gilbrech grew up vacationing and dining at the community’s famous resort, The Red Apple Inn. “I would come here with my grandparents and eat at the Inn,” she says. After Mary Noel and her husband, Jeff, started a family of their own, they bought a lake house in the small resort community and began enjoying summers on the water. Through the years the family has lived in several different places, but something always kept them coming back to their vacation home in Eden Isle. Finally, while living in Memphis several years ago, a thought occurred to Mary Noel and Jeff: Since they loved Eden Isle so much, why not live there full time? Jeff, who is originally from Arkansas, and Mary Noel, a Mississippi native, love the flat terrain of the Delta region. With that thought in mind they purchased an older home—one of the first houses built in Eden Isle—on a flat piece of land on Greer’s Ferry Lake. However, as they began planning the renovation the couple realized demolishing the existing home and building a new one would make much more sense. “It would have been great if we could have remodeled it, but it just needed too much work,” says Mary Noel. So, the family got to work planning the construction of a new home. From the start, they knew they wanted an open floor plan, a big back porch overlooking the lake, and most importantly, simplicity. “We wanted the home to be very casual and simple,

The Gilbrechs opted to leave the windows free of blinds or other treatments to allow the stunning views of the lake and wooded area to remain unobstructed and to bring natural light into the home. While the Gilbrechs prefer to eat at the bar in the kitchen, they use the dining room for special occasions. Whimsical birds, which Mary Noel collects, can be found throughout the home and make an appearance on the botanical-inspired fabric that covers the dining room chairs. both for our kids now and our grandkids in the future,” Mary Noel says. “We wanted a house big enough for all of us, but unassuming. We’re just minimalists, I guess.” It was also important to the Gilbrechs to use local materials. Along with the home’s exterior, the fireplace and kitchen backsplash were crafted from Arkansas fieldstone. “I wanted everything to be natural,” Mary Noel says. Along with the fieldstone, wood, granite and lots of natural light contribute to the home’s casual rustic theme. Simple, yet timeless accents, including a copper vent hood and an iron light fixture over the dining room table, are scattered around the home. However, integrating natural materials wasn’t without its bumps. The pine floors, taken from the walls of an old building in South Carolina, now create a look of natural warmth throughout the home—but it took some extra work to get them that way. “We bought these floors and Jeff had them stained,” Mary Noel says. “Then we got them into the house and they looked awful. They were the wrong color. We thought we were going to have to get rid of

them. Luckily, we were able to have the floors planed and they came out the right color,” she explains. When it came to furnishing and decorating the home, the family had collected furniture, pottery and art over the years from a variety of places—including antique stores in Mary Noel’s home state of Mississippi. Aged hutches, armoires and four-poster beds blended into the home’s rustic style. “Most of the things I already had and they just came together in this house,” she says. In addition to using local materials and pieces they already owned, making the home energy efficient was also important to the Gilbrechs. The house was designed for geothermal heating and cooling, which uses pumps to provide a natural and efficient alternative to traditional units. “All the heating and cooling comes from six wells under the house that are 275 feet deep,” says Mary Noel of their well-executed and environmentally responsible energy plan. Ask anyone in the family, which includes brothers Will, Wade and Palmer as well as their sister Katherine, and they’ll tell you the large, June 2013 | athomearkansas.com 59

Paintings by Memphis artist Leslie Barron brighten a small sitting area just off the kitchen. Facing page: The natural-material theme is carried into the kitchen with wood cabinets, granite countertops and a stone backsplash. The Gilbrechs realized a separate refrigerator and freezer would work better with the layout of the kitchen, so they placed the two units on either side of the cooktop to create symmetry. Pendant globes from McCarty Pottery in Merigold, Mississippi illuminate the bar area. Additional pieces of Gilbrech’s McCarty Pottery collection are displayed on an antique hutch in the kitchen.

breezy back porch is definitely a favorite spot. “When they were building the porch and I realized how big it was going to be I thought we would never have enough furniture to put out there,” Mary Noel says of the space, which has plenty of room for a separate dining and sitting area, as well as a grill station. “It’s big enough for the boys to throw the football as hard as they can and it will reach the other side. So I can’t have anything breakable out there,” she laughs. The Gilbrechs’ home has given the family a casual refuge to spend time together and enjoy the lake. Most of all, the house has allowed the Gilbrechs to come home to Eden Isle for good. “There are prettier houses than mine, but mine is very livable,” says Mary Noel. “We love everything about living here. We can walk to play tennis and golf and to eat dinner. People know that once you live in Eden Isle, it’s a special place. We’ve moved here and there, so we are settled. This is home.” June 2013 | athomearkansas.com 61

The master bedroom abounds with sentimental value. Jeff bought Mary Noel the lamps when they were newlyweds, and the artwork is New Orleans artist Susan Woodard’s depictions of the Gilbrech children. The couple also had this stately four-poster bed made in Macon, Mississippi, when they were newlyweds.

Summer Entertaining

“The trend in entertaining is moving away from fussy arrangements. Instead, combine simple components for an easy, yet dramatic overall effect. Don’t over complicate your party—enjoy it!” —Chris Norwood

Summertime is all about rest and relaxation, which is why Chris Norwood, AIFD, CFD and vice president of Tipton Hurst, believes entertaining should be easy and never exhausting. For this summer dinner party, Norwood grouped whimsical yellow and orange ranunculus with multihued “Free Spirit” roses and happy Gerbera daisies in small, color-blocked clusters. “People are really moving away from fussy arrangements,” Norwood says. To keep this style carefree, he combined simple items in varying colors and heights to create a more complex overall design. A bed of rye grass creates a low table runner, while fresh citrus—which not only smells lovely, but also adds a burst of color—lines the center arrangement. In contrast, pots of fresh herbs add natural greenery and texture. The cheerful floral centerpiece stands out against the rougher textures of a restored, gray farmhouse table and wicker French chairs, both from Tipton Hurst. June 2013 | athomearkansas.com 65
