From The Editor in Chief
“ There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.” To look at a house and see its full potential isn’t something that just anyone can do. How a home looks in the present can really limit one’s ability to envision a more beautiful, functional space. Lately, as a new homeowner, I’ve been practicing and developing my own ability to think on a different level about what is possible, and I know with a little time, money, creativity, and patience, I can transform my previously-owned home into a place that’s truly mine. Our Before and After issue always stands as a testament to designers and homeowners who have had great success in realizing a home’s highest potential. And isn’t it great fun to look at a “before” alongside an “after” without having to endure the unpredictable, exacting, and often lengthy process of home renovation? For instance, take the Hardin residence in Fayetteville. It’s such an amazing example of a home inspired by a vision. It’s a house that had passed through multiple generations of one family without many updates when Bill Hardin—who had long-admired the property—purchased it and gave it new life. He updated room layouts and completely modernized the structure without altering the integrity or footprint. In contrast, the Little Rock Heights home, also featured in these pages, was purchased solely for its view. The homeowners then embarked on an ambitious overhaul, leaving barely any trace of the original residence. The stunning result is a home that is sleek and current, yet livable and comfortable, and of course, it still has that jawdropping view. Our May issue is also an excellent resource for finding professionals in your area who can help guide you to a clear vision for your own home and bring new ideas to life. I hope you’ll explore this issue—as well as our website and blog—to inspire you to think bigger about how to make your home more fully your own.
A special thank you to Cinda Rich, Amanda Kella, Whitney Lammers, and Audrey Rich for being such great models and sharing your home for our Mother’s Day photo shoot on pages 11 and 12.

The one-level showroom and improved parking area offer convenience to shoppers. Inside, you’ll find the same quality outdoor lines they have always been known for, including Big Green Egg, Lloyd Flanders, Winston, OW Lee, and more. Makeover Magic
Interior Fabrics & Design has been a go-to source for affordable, quality fabrics, drapery panels, and custom headboards for years. Now, owner Patricia Clinton is offering the same value at the newly opened IF&D Home. Featuring a range of styles, the store offers lighting, artwork, furniture, and a number of accessories. Located in the same shopping center as Interior Fabrics & Design, the newly opened store pulls many of its color trends from popular fabrics. 4155 North Steele Boulevard, Suite 50, Fayetteville, (479) 444-0222

C Square Home’s SHOWROOM DOUBLED IN SIZE!
Storied Pieces
Travel inspired Ashley Corey to open Fayetteville’s C Square Home nearly two years ago. From the start, the store has been filled with one-of-a-kind sustainable and handmade pieces from markets around the world as well as local craftsmen. You’ll find beautiful armoires made from reclaimed wood alongside razorbacks made from barn planks. Corey recognized the need for a local source for handmade furnishings and local residents agreed. The store recently expanded to a larger location in the same shopping center on North Steele Boulevard near the Northwest Arkansas Mall. The move doubled their square footage, allowing them to bring customers more great finds. 4155 North Steele Boulevard, Suite 10, Fayetteville, (479) 301-2387, csquarehome.com

CONWAY
For the inaugural edition of our new “Discover” feature, the At Home team traveled just thirty minutes from our office to Conway. Filled with a mix of modern boutiques, quaint antique and home décor shops, and delightful eateries, this city has something for everyone. Follow along to experience it as the natives do. PRODUCERS Blythe Cate & Chip Jones
EATS & SWEETS While they may be known for their “scratch-made” cheese dip, we suggest breakfast at Stoby’s. This cozy Conway staple is a favorite of local college kids and families alike. Try the thick, warm biscuits, colossal cinnamon rolls or pink strawberry pancakes topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream. By your second cup of coffee, you’ll feel right at home. While you’re in the neighborhood, walk across the back parking lot to PattiCakes Bakery where the sugary scents of coconut meringue pie, red velvet cupcakes, and cake pops are enough to tempt any sweet tooth. The bakery devotes itself to serving desserts reminiscent of a childhood trip to grandma’s house. Patti herself will hand you a cupcake catered to your tastes (peanut butter chocolate, perhaps?) in a tiny Chinese takeout box. Never mind
that it’s only 10 a.m., you can always save it for an afternoon snack. When you’re ready for lunch, drive to historic downtown Conway to sample the fare at Cross Creek Sandwich Shop.
wrap, and be sure to save room for a heaping piece of strawberry pie. Pop in Jennifer’s after you eat to hunt for treasures of your own. Finally, if you’re looking for a divine dinner spot, dine at Mike’s Place on Front Street where you’ll experience a taste of the Deep South. We suggest the seafood crepes or New York strip. Collector Ashli Ahrens Hometown Stuttgart; currently resides in a condo inside Little Rock’s historic Lafayette Building Her Obsession Blue-and-white porcelain china and dinnerware How The Collection Started “I found my first piece, a large platter, at a flea market in England, Arkansas,” says Ahrens. Why She Loves It Many of the pieces in her collection have a family tie and are now beloved heirlooms— each with a story all their own (turn the page to read more about their heritage). How She Uses It In previous homes, Ahrens has had the plates displayed in china hutches and hanging on the walls. However, they aren’t just for decoration. Ahrens and her husband also love to serve dinner on the blue-and-white treasures.
May 2014 | athomearkansas.com 31
Why blue and white? My mom, Claudia Ahrens, subscribed to a lot of decorating magazines when I was growing up, and I have always gravitated toward the classic blue-andwhite palette. When did you first start collecting these pieces? I bought my first piece when I was either a senior in high school or had just entered college. From there, one of great aunts, Ellen Turner Thomas, left me her Allerton “Willow” pattern when she passed away. This is similar to the popular “Blue Willow” Spode pattern and is made in England. I got a whole set of dishes and platters, so the collection really grew from there. So, it sounds like your collection is a part of your family’s heritage now. Yes, it is. In fact, after college I showed interest and my mother remembered she had blue-andwhite dishes when she first set up house as a single woman. She was able to find a few and gave me a cup and saucer along with several bread plates. Interestingly, my brother-in-law’s parents also had blue-and-white dinnerware. When his mother passed away, they gave me the entire set, so it’s been very special to collect them in this way rather than buying a lot of them myself. Some of these plates also depict the Natural State. What’s the story behind those? They are known as souvenir plates. The Arkansas versions that I have were also my great aunt’s. They were made in 1936 by Vernon Kilns, a California company that manufactured a ton of these during the period. You can find different states and attractions if you search for that company. They’re starting to be worth something now. Do you have other collections? I have several actually. As a child I collected folding fans, and later in life I started hunting for Victorian footstools. More recently, I’ve been picking up vintage postcards and my latest obsession is memorabilia from the Lafayette Hotel (which was located in the building where Ahrens and her husband Kelley Bass currently reside). My philosophy is to collect things I can use, whether I physically use them or they are for decoration. 34 At Home in Arkansas | May 2014

To celebrate their upcoming graduation, Pulaski Academy seniors enjoyed dinner and fellowship at the home of interior designer Mara Malcolm. The elegant setting was a beautiful backdrop for reminiscing over their school years. Malcom made a delicious banana pudding topped with fresh fruit and a shortbread cookie for dessert. Visit the At Home in Arkansas blog for her recipe.
ay is one of the busiest months of the year for many families. The school year is winding down and end of the year parties and celebrations abound. For families with high school seniors, the biggest and most-anticipated celebration of all—graduation—is about to take place. To mark the occasion, Little Rock interior designer, Mara Malcolm, who works alongside her mother Retha Lamb, orchestrated a memorable graduation dinner for a group of Pulaski Academy seniors that are part of a special club which has evolved through the years. “‘The Forever Club,’ as they refer to it, consists of eight friends that have attended school together since preschool,” explains Malcolm. In keeping with the grandness of the milestone, Malcolm chose an upscale dinner theme. She started with antique china from Noritake to dress up the table. “I wanted the table and the party décor to reflect how valued the kids are and how special they are. That’s why I went the extra mile and it was a little more formal than probably what they are used to,” says Malcolm. Malcolm used beautiful purples throughout the décor complementing the custom-made toile tablecloth, antique dishes, and serving pieces. To add a little fun and whimsy to the setting, she also included a variety of more casual details such as custom monogrammed laundry bags, striped paper straws juxtaposed with formal stemware, Chinese take-out boxes for sweets to go, and a dinner menu at each place setting that resembled the look of a diploma. “This was a special gathering for close friends and their parents to celebrate a milestone together,” says Malcolm.

1. Custom-painted by Northwest Arkansas artist Elizabeth Rusher, a piece of artwork known as “The Muses” creates the perfect backdrop for the beverage station and sets the palette for the party’s décor. A ceramic planter is innovatively stocked with ice-cold root beer, while crystal glassware and a vintage brass beverage dispenser add a touch of elegance. 2. The decadent dessert bar was filled with an assortment of scrumptious confections made by Sarah DeClerk of Ann Potter Baking. The offerings included raspberry macaroons filled with blackberry coulis, vanilla mini cupcakes with lavender infused buttercream, sugar shortbread with royal icing and toile detail that mimic the tablecloth, and white chocolate and vanilla cake pops. 3. The place settings were created with a mixture of antique china and embellished with custom-designed dinner menus made to look like diplomas. Personalized stationery served as a place card for each guest. 4. For a less formal (and useful!) touch, monogrammed laundry bags draped the backs of the dining chairs and served as favors for the guests. 5. For the overall look, Malcolm chose a fun color scheme that was a little different than the school colors of blue and gold. The rich purple hues give an air of formality, but are balanced with plenty of fun elements for the group of graduates.

ooking to bring a sense of calm to their routine, a Little Rock couple set out to find a new home where they could spread out a bit, relax and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Hoping for a river view, their options were limited. When a classically styled house on a quiet street came available, they knew that with a little imagination—and help from a trusted team of experts—they could transform it to suit their needs perfectly. At first glance, the home wasn’t exactly dream-worthy. In fact, it was just the opposite of what this couple had in mind. But the red brick Georgian-style house did have a few things going for it; namely, a view of the Arkansas River and beyond. Inside, a small galley kitchen, dark hallways, and low ceilings didn’t suit the couple’s taste or lifestyle, so they called on architect Tom Fennell and designer Bill Beringer to bring the space to life. After seeing the home and hearing the couple’s needs, Fennell decided to enlarge the back of the house by more than twenty feet, expanding a sun room into a large living room and making way for a new, more spacious kitchen. The design team also worked together to transform a compact formal living room into a cozy study, and the once-small kitchen into what is now a well-appointed butler’s pantry, which holds the homeowner’s extensive collection of heirloom serving ware including china, crystal, and silver. Though the home nearly doubled in size, the elevation from the street remains the same. In keeping with the style of the neighborhood, it still appears to be a one-story rambler, though its formerly red brick façade is now hidden beneath a layer of stucco. Where a large porch with over-scaled columns stood, there is now a sleek cast-stone portico with a metal roof. Inside, the three headers leading inward from the foyer were raised, creating a sight line from the front door out the back windows to 46 At Home in Arkansas | May 2014
The breakfast table can seat ten for casual meals with a river view. Tall arrangements by About Vase complement the room’s ceiling height. Beyond, a full-size freezer is disguised beneath panels that match the cabinets, and a large pantry keeps small appliances out of view. Facing page: In the new kitchen, a 14-foot-long marble-topped island, ample cabinet space, and industrial grade appliances make hosting crowds a breeze. A small sitting area in front of the fireplace gets daily use. The sleek, Shaker-style cabinets were designed by Bill Wrape of Distinctive Kitchens and Baths. Wall ovens by GE Monogram and a Viking range are from Metro Appliances & More. What was once a galley-style kitchen is now a butler’s pantry that serves the dining room.

the river. As a result, the once-dark hallway is now bathed in light. To accentuate the open nature of the house, every room—with the exception of two baths—is painted the same dark cream with hints of gray, a custom mix by Sherwin-Williams. Beveled marble fireplace surrounds, crystal chandeliers, silk draperies, and fine antiques lend an air of formality to the home, but every space is well used. “We love our home, and find that it is very easy to live in,” says the homeowner. To give the spaces an unfussy feeling, Beringer mixed the owners’ antiques with sleek, yet comfortable upholstery and kept accessories to a minimum. Having worked with the clients before, he helped them take this home in a new direction. “Their previous home was very traditional—full of oriental rugs and antiques—but they didn’t want to go that route this time. They wanted it to be very clean and minimal,” he says. A neutral color palette of soft earth tones is a nod to the view out the windows, but doesn’t compete with it. “They wanted their art and their guests to be the home’s color,” adds Beringer. In the end, the couple achieved exactly what they desired: a classically elegant home that lives comfortably and makes entertaining a breeze. But it’s the location of the house that makes it extra special. “Waking up to the river view every morning is an adventure,” says the homeowner. “From our porch, we can see small herds of deer bed down at night, watch fog roll up the hill from the river in the mornings, and listen to people having a good time on their boats during the summer. It’s almost as if we’re not even in town.”

Color Taking hints from the owner’s jubilant personality, designer Katie Henry gave a Little Rock home a cosmetic update that resulted in a bright, happy haven Designer Katie Henry and homeowner Pamela Rees, seen here with her beloved labradoodle Lexie, collaborated on the color-infusing home makeover. Facing page: To lighten the foyer and give guests a cheerful welcome, a heavy ironwork console and coordinating sconces were replaced with a retro gray entry piece, gold Greek-key style lamps, and original artwork by Arkansas artist Amanda Kella.

rowing up in Little Rock and attending the same school, Katie Henry and Pamela Rees had numerous mutual friends. However, they never imagined how close they would become when one of those mutual friends suffered a life-changing stroke. “We were both flooded with phone calls, texts and an overwhelming sense of sadness,” says Rees. As the pair became closer, they decided a creative outlet was just what they needed to heal their own hearts as their friend began to heal herself. What’s more, they knew just the project—Rees’s house. As the owner of Little Rock’s Companions Clothier, Rees has always been on-trend and enjoys shopping for the home she shares with her spirited labradoodle, Lexie. “Pamela is so fashion forward and hilarious,” says Henry, who owns the Fayetteville-based Katie Grace Designs, “and her home needed to match her personality.” Rees agreed wholeheartedly. “I wanted my house to be a reflection of who I am,” she says. The pair worked together on the update, envisioning how existing pieces could work with new, mapping out color schemes and finding delight in fabric swatches that seemed spot-on for the spaces. While Rees’s West Little Rock home had great bones and some pieces that were well suited to her style, the rooms appeared dark and lacked the vitality that seems to bubble over in her character. For an immediate big-impact change, Henry suggested Rees update the butterscotch-colored walls with a fresh coat of Sherwin-William’s Navajo White—a neutral and clean background color that would act as a canvas for bright fabrics and accents. When entering the home, one is immediately greeted with a small foyer as well as a view of the living room and breakfast nook—meaning all of these spaces needed a continuous welcoming flow. Henry started with a lighter version of the home’s palette in the entry, introducing a custom piece of artwork by Arkansas artist Amanda Kella as well as a modified console. “Pamela is six feet tall, so the entry piece really needed to be larger in order to be proportionate with her height,” she says. To raise the console, 54 At Home in Arkansas | May 2014
The home’s open floor plan joins the kitchen, breakfast, and living room. Trading the formerly butterscotch walls for Sherwin-Williams’s Navajo White brought light into the space and provided the perfect backdrop for bold colorful accents. The turquoise ottoman was the starting point for the living room, and a pair of lamps that Rees already owned carried the hue into the breakfast nook. Coral accents coordinate with the turquoise as well as the neutral furniture. A custom credenza by J & J Custom Cabinets offers storage as well as serving space in the breakfast nook.

which Henry found at Fayetteville’s Precious Cargo, she researched mid-century furniture legs and found a perfect set that would not only raise the height of the piece to Pamela’s comfort level, but also match its vintage style. In the living room, a tufted turquoise ottoman was the starting point for a bold color scheme. “Pamela found the ottoman and, loved it, so we had it made for the space,” says Henry. While the pair opted to keep Rees’s existing sofa, two side chairs were recovered in a neutral gray geometric pattern to play off the room’s colors and prints. Additionally, Henry changed the layout of the room’s furniture, moving the chairs to the opposite side to open up the flow and make the space feel larger. The home’s living room and breakfast nook all had bright coral accents, and Henry and Rees decided to play off this color by carrying a variation through the rest of the home’s main rooms. The same coral can be seen in the dining room rug as well as the artwork. The table and chairs, which Rees already owned, pair with a china cabinet that Henry found on Craig’s List and had painted in the same gray seen throughout the rooms. “I have a desire to make my work original,” says Henry. “I’m going to splurge on a few things, but then I totally blow my clients’ minds with a ‘save,’ like a flea-find piece.” The master bedroom has a decidedly feminine feel thanks to a heavy dose of pink. Rees already had the headboard and the mirrored chests she uses as bedside tables. Henry encouraged her to use pink for the room’s dominant accent hue. “I told her, ‘You have to use pink! That would just be so fun,’” she recalls. Shortly after, Henry found the “Rosehips” fabric from Duralee and the pair knew it was perfect for the bed’s throw pillows. White frames from Ikea hold abstract prints, also by local artist Amanda Kella, and carry the palette throughout the room with a statement-making presence. As the home was transformed, so were Henry and Rees. The pair developed a close bond and still talk frequently. “Design is about so much more than a room. It’s about building relationships. And I really think this makeover made Pamela come even more alive,” concludes Henry.
56 At Home in Arkansas | May 2014
For a feminine flair, Henry and Rees decided to go with pink as the dominant accent color for the master bedroom. Duralee’s “Rosehips” fabric was used to create the throw pillows for the bed, while a fuchsia-and-white trellis-inspired pattern covers the bench at the foot of the bed. While the exterior of the home did not change structurally, it was freshened with a neutral coat of paint. The new color scheme complements the rock wall that circles the one-acre property. A simple row of boxwoods and lush containers of annuals soften the entrance and add color without distracting from the classic faรงade. Facing page: A pair of chairs upholstered with royal blue velvet and trimmed with nailheads paired with a marble-top table create a cozy nook in the living room. 58 At Home in Arkansas | May 2014

A historic Fayetteville home begins a new story starting with an interior and exterior renovation May 2014 | athomearkansas.com 59
In the living room, pleated linen draperies recede against the soft white walls. A pearlized paint finish highlights the room’s original millwork, which was also left in tact during the renovation. The French painting of a jazz musician is from Boswell Mourot Fine Art. Facing page, from top: Homeowner Bill Hardin uses a decorative nest to display the bird feathers he collects on walks with his dogs. In the dining room, a custom mirror by Emporium Home hangs above a buffet from Mrs. Howard. A pair of slender mercury glass lamps and African tribal necklaces displayed on stands contribute to the eclectic feel. Designer Dale Trice highlighted the foyer’s curved walls by darkening the stair treads and adding a striped paint treatment to the walls.

ometimes life makes a complete circle. For Bill Hardin, that meant coming home to the neighborhood where he grew up. “My son called to tell me that the brick house on the corner was for sale. I had always thought it was an interesting place, so I knocked on the door,” he says. Hardin got the full history of the home from its then owner, whose father founded and chaired the Department of Entomology at the University of Arkansas and built the house. “She was able to give me the original blueprints, so we knew how the house was intended to be,” says Hardin. The circa 1939 two-story house had good bones and a generous yard, but it needed some work to make it efficient for modern life. To begin the renovation, Hardin called in designer Dale Trice, whom he had worked with on several previous homes. Trice was careful to create a balance by retaining and enhancing the charming details of the home while removing the old-fashioned oddities. Downstairs, he highlighted the original plaster walls and millwork with a fresh coat of paint in a pearl finish. In the den, he painted the cozy—but dated—pine paneling a bold shade of marine blue and removed a set of dingy built-in bookcases. In the tiny powder room, Trice replaced what he calls a “strange little sink” with a custom concrete creation that appears to float on the wall. The home’s wood floors were refinished with an ebony wash, providing a lovely contrast to the light walls. Perhaps the happiest discovery was that a curved plaster wall matching the staircase wall was hidden behind drywall in a spare bedroom. By retaining the most interesting architectural details, the house now feels unique and custom. While the footprint of the lower level remains the same—except for the addition of an outdoor room—the second level underwent several changes to give it a more modern flow. Originally one portion of the upstairs had two small bedrooms with a shared bath that opened into the hall. In one bedroom, Trice opened a closet into the bath and closed off the hall entrance for added privacy. In the other, a small sitting area was absorbed into the bath and closet to create a more comfortable master suite. “Mr. Hardin has a very keen eye for design,” says Trice, “he wanted the interiors to feel updated; not necessarily modern or traditional, but somewhere in the middle.” A variety of elements including velvet, linen, animal hides, and natural wood offer texture and a nod to the outdoors, while sleek lighting, metallic shades, and bits of Lucite add a luxurious touch. In the small kitchen, Trice 62 At Home in Arkansas | May 2014
During the renovation, an original curved plaster wall in the guest bedroom was uncovered beneath sheetrock. The room has a soft palette of blues and greens that create a calm, yet contemporary feel. Facing page, from top: Subway tile walls, metal shelving, and a stainless steel island give the new kitchen a spare, industrial feel. replaced the dated cabinets with a free standing shelf and a stainless steel island. A vintage bar-height table contributes to the industrial feel. Outdoors, the red brick façade got a fresh coat of neutral paint. Fayetteville exterior designer Daniel Keeley helped turn several decades of garden additions into a simple, low maintenance outdoor space. Gravel paths add charm and what Keeley calls an element of “casual elegance.” Hardin, who has two sons and a grandson, says he is as likely to host a viewing party for a Razorback sporting event as a hot dog roast for a rowdy group of 11-year-olds. “I have really enjoyed this house,” he says, “Nothing in it is off limits.”
The addition of an outdoor room provides the ideal spot for hosting football-viewing parties. In the back yard, exterior designer Daniel Keeley created a simple, low maintenance garden with a casual European feel. Facing page: In the master bedroom, a vibrant painting inspired the addition of orange to the room’s palette. What was once a small sitting room is now a well-appointed master bath. A vintage barley-twist buffet was repurposed as a vanity, highlighting the juxtaposition between old and new found throughout the house.
