Pets know the best places to hang out in their homes. We see it time and time again during photo shoots—we set up a shot where a ray of light streams through a window beautifully, and a dog or cat sits down right in the middle of it. Pets know their homes: the spot where the sunlight warms a room, the right chair to have a great view through a window, the most comfortable place to relax. Such was the case at my house, when photographer Nancy Nolan set up this shot in my living room and my dogs happily eased themselves into the picture. Molly curled up where she could keep an eye on me as well as the front door (waiting for the kids to come home) and her sister, Roxy, settled in a comfy chair where she could watch the goings on. This is what gracious living looks like at our house, with places for everyone to relax and feel at home (thanks to a washable slipcover on Roxy’s favorite chair). Tailoring your home to your lifestyle is what gracious living is all about. For world traveling executive Marybeth Cornwell, it means being able to walk in the door of her high-rise condo, easily stow her gear and get comfortable in her colorful living room or throw a casual gathering for friends on her terrace. AUTUMN FEST Landscape designer Chris Olsen celebrates the change of seasons with a harvest-inspired garden party at his West Little Rock home

Chris Olsen’s favorite season is no mystery. At Little Rock’s Botanica Gardens, his home and garden design store, rich autumn colors go on display by mid-summer. In his own West Little Rock home, the landscape designer and entertaining expert concocts warm, hearty fall recipes in his kitchen. And his home décor becomes a harvest of reds, oranges and yellows that usher in crisp afternoons and cool evenings. Olsen believes autumn is meant to be shared, and opening his home to friends marks the change of seasons. Garden parties, hosted in a freestanding dining pavilion he constructed using rustic materials, are one of the designer’s favorite ways to entertain. Olsen shares his tips for an autumn-inspired get-together. www.athomearkansas.com 27
THE SEASON’S BOUNTY With their varied sizes, colors and textures, pumpkins, gourds and Indian corn provide a naturally beautiful way to decorate for fall. Olsen offers guidelines for using these seasonal favorites:
Mix up colors and textures. Use smooth gourds with ones that have a textured appearance, and solid color gourds with ones that are striped.
“I keep the stems and leaves on my pumpkins and gourds, and I’ll even leave the dirt on them,” says Olsen. “I love a natural look.” Grocery stores will have jack-o’-lanterns and some mini pumpkins. For wider variety, go to a locally owned garden center or a grower. Remember that pumpkins and gourds can rot. They don’t always last until Thanksgiving, especially if they’re outside. For decorating inside, put them on a platter or base instead of placing them directly on a table. Buy extras and fill in as needed to replace ones that rot. Look for pumpkins or gourds with the thickest skins, which tend to last longer. Avoid pumpkins and gourds with blemishes and cuts that will rot more quickly.
When buying Indian corn, make sure it has all the kernels and that the kernels are firm and not falling apart. Inspect for insects as well. Olsen recommends exploring different pumpkin varieties and the decorating possibilities they hold. The Cinderella pumpkin, for example, is flat on the top and bottom, which allows for stacking. They come in a variety of colors and textures, and are concave on top, providing the perfect spot for a floral touch. “Leave the stem on and, using seasonal colors like pansies, mass a few plants together on top of the pumpkin. Cover the root balls with sheet moss, and it looks like a potted pumpkin.”
FLORAL FAVORITES In addition to pansies, several other fall plants complement seasonal pumpkins and gourds.
For a colorful centerpiece, arrange Gerbera daisies with an assortment of pumpkins on top of a pumpkinorange tablecloth. Kalanchoes are another easy-to-find floral, available at most grocery stores. To display them, Olsen opts for a slightly aged terra cotta pot. “Takes an old pot and brush it with a white glaze, then use a moist paper towel to blot some of the glaze, and it gives the pot a limed look,” he says. “Fill the pot with a few kalanchoes, tuck in a small pumpkin and some moss, and you have a look that’s great Halloween through Thanksgiving.” 28

“I love using potted Gerbera daisies,” Olsen says. “You can buy them at the grocery store, and they last longer than cut flowers.” Mums also provide classic fall color, and Olsen prefers to group them with something unexpected—firewood. “I use firewood stacked as pedestals for pumpkins and gourds,” he says. “Then I add mums in terra cotta pots, and it’s a unique grouping of fall favorites, with mixed textures and colors.” While mums provide color, their beauty can be short-lived. “Mums only last about three weeks,” Olsen says. “For a look that lasts from Halloween to Thanksgiving, you’ll need to replace mums mid-season.” Remember that greenery can provide a lush backdrop for fall color. Boxwoods are inexpensive and add contrast with alternating white and orange mini-pumpkins around the base. And for the truly unexpected, mix in some tropical plants. A limelight dracaena features chartreuse shades of green that can beautifully complement a display of orange pumpkins.
TABLETOP TIPS Incorporating unique elements is at the core of Olsen’s decorating philosophy. “Look at magazines to get ideas, but feel free to express your unique style. Mix in your own antiques or your grandmother’s china. Use elements that mean something to you.” Olsen also advises fighting the urge to coordinate tableware. “Don’t go to the store and buy everything that matches,” he says. “You want to mix and match for a casually pretty look. Sometimes it’s trial and error to come up with a blend you like.” Candles add warmth and color, and Olsen suggests battery-operated versions for easy outdoor use. “The candles are real wax but use battery-powered lights instead of wicks,” he adds. “They even have timers, so you can set them to turn on every evening for a few hours.” The candles are available at Botanica Gardens, as well as other specialty shops. Because no flame is present, you can wrap these candles in leaves with no risk of fire. “I use real leaves and a couple drops of hot glue,” Olsen says. “That way, when you remove the leaves, you can peel off the glue.”

The interiors of this house are so soothing and elegant. What inspired the look?
Debi Davis:
The homeowner, Paul Guess, is a busy executive who travels often, and he wanted his home to be calm and inviting. The cream stucco exterior with strong French overtones was a starting point, leading us toward textural neutrals that would blend inside and out. AHIA: How did the color palette evolve? DD: I’m finding that with all that’s going on in the world, my clients are moving away from dark colors and gravitating toward soft shades that are uplifting. I’ve worked with Paul on several previous homes in various cities, and we’ve experimented with different colors. Here, working from the cream color of the exterior, we used a variety of creams and whites inside and mixed in touches of gold or brown depending on whether we wanted a room to be more formal or more casual. Paul liked how light and fresh that looks, and it’s a good fit for this house. AHIA: What elements did you use to keep a neutral color palette visually interesting? DD: Textures, in both fabrics and furnishings, are very important when you’re working with neutrals. We mixed silk, linen and velvet, used tufted or quilted looks and lots of details to keep rooms interesting. We complemented the upholstered furniture with gorgeous accent pieces, from a carved console to antique doors used as wall panels and other architectural elements. Contrasts, like a dark, chunky wood next to a light, shiny fabric, work beautifully in a neutral palette as well. AHIA: This house has a series of rooms that flow from one into the next. Did that present a design challenge? DD: The rooms are also on the smaller side, so we wrapped them in shades of ivory to blend together easily and to feel more spacious. And we used a mix of antiques and custom furniture throughout the house for continuity from room to room. For instance, Paul’s home office is directly off the foyer, and we furnished it with an antique French table as well as a sofa and armchairs, making it as attractive as any room in the house. 40
AHIA: How did the homeowner’s lifestyle influence the design? DD: Paul loves to entertain at home, from small gettogethers to larger events. Because of that, he wanted an elegant home, but one that is still livable. Mixing in old with new, and polished with more rough-hewn textures and pieces, helped achieve that. You can transition from spaces that are dressy to ones that are casual and never miss a beat if you use the right materials. A home can be beautiful and refined yet still easy and livable. AHIA: You mentioned working with the homeowner on his previous residences. Were you able to use some of his existing pieces in this house? DD: The majority of the items are ones Paul has acquired through the years and used in different homes. When you buy good pieces, both old and new, they transition through your life. You can change a fabric, change a color—there’s so much you can do with your investment pieces if you’re creative. Paul has a wonderful set of antique French dining chairs, and in his previous home, they were covered in brown mohair for a clubby look, whereas here, the space called for a more elegant style and we recovered them in cream silk damask. When you make smart investments, pieces last over time. Moving from the Charlotte, North Carolina, area to Northwest Arkansas for a position with Sam’s Club must have been a big change. Did purchasing a condo in the heart of the city stem from your metropolitan roots?
Homeowner Marybeth Cornwell:
I wanted to be in the center of things and was excited when this condo in the Legacy Building became available. I’m a very efficient person. When I travel, I never check a bag—even if I’m gone for two weeks. I like to think that I also live in a very efficient manner, and condo living reflects this lifestyle. I have the things I need and love around me. AHIA: Your work in merchandising management has allowed you to see top trends in home and apparel from around the globe. Do any of the design decisions in your own home reflect this? MC: I had many influences. Working with my designer, Bill Crowder, we tried to incorporate elements that I love throughout my home. I like using different textures, and brought this into my living area with grasscloth wallpaper. I also wanted lighting that was both functional and fun. The previous owners installed a chandelier over the dining table. We exchanged it for a larger three-shade fixture that enhances the room’s classic look, and then repurposed the chandelier by moving it to the master bath. AHIA: Even the small touches in your home’s design seem to have a cosmopolitan appeal. MC: I wanted to use pieces that I’ve gathered over the course of my travels, especially my art collection. One of my favorite pieces is from India. I wanted it to be a focal point in the living area and hung it over my sofa. From there, I worked with my designer to bring out its various colors—the green in the sofa and the coral of the walls. Also, everyone always asks about the handrail along my staircase because it seems to have a Far East flair. Believe it or not, it was here when I moved in and seems to fit in perfectly. AHIA: What about your bedroom and bath? What are some of your favorite aspects of these rooms? MC: My bed and bath are really a retreat for me. Red is one of my favorite colors, so naturally I wanted to use that on the walls. I added a pair of built-in nightstands to save 46
space, and I especially love the swing-arm lamps for reading in bed. Another great thing about the two rooms is the view—it’s worth waking up early just to enjoy it. AHIA: With one main living/dining/kitchen area, storage could easily become an issue. How did you remedy that? MC: The most significant change I made throughout the condo was adding built-in storage. There was no pantry and limited cabinet space in the kitchen, so my contractor built a large cupboard to store everything from crackers to my Cuisinart. AHIA: You also love to entertain. How do you make the most of your square footage when you invite people into your home? MC: I’ve learned to make items dual-purpose. The entry piece at my front door stores all my platters and dishes for entertaining. There’s a small chest in the living room that I use as an accent piece and also to hold linens. When guests arrive, I use one end of my long dining table to serve appetizers and the other end as a bar or for dinner seating if it’s a small group. I also treat my patio as a part of the living room. The comfy furniture and tables truly make it an extension of my home. When you live in a small space, you have to make everything beautiful as well as useful. It has European influences and an Old World feel to it, with cedar beams, a hand-cut stone fireplace, antiques and eclectic art. MY FAVORITE PART OF MY HOUSE IS: The kitchen, since I love to cook and experiment. It’s another outlet for creativity. My kitchen is open to the den and dining area so I can cook but still be with my friends or family. I especially love it when my nieces and nephews come over and sit on the barstools and talk to me while I’m cooking. I’M MOST AT HOME: When I’m with my family and my friends, wherever that happens to be. I could be at my brother’s house with the entire family or sitting on my back porch with a good friend, watching my dog run around.
