Miller’s Mud Mill Tucked away in a storefront space in the small southern Arkansas town of Dumas, Miller’s Mud Mill quietly produces some of the most sought-after hand-made pottery in the South. “My pottery seems to be on every bride’s wish list these days,” says owner and artisan, Gail Miller. “I love to think of all these newlyweds setting the table with an assortment of my pieces.” What Miller started as a hobby 30 years ago quickly turned into a full-blown passion, as she developed hand-thrown pottery with innovative glazes, distinctive shapes and diverse colors. Her namesake items now include free-form platters and bowls, custom dinnerware, complete place settings, and even unique vases and other accessories. Each piece is a work of art, made in her downtown Dumas studio—a must-see destination for travelers through the region. Miller’s three sons, three daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren are regulars at the Mud Mill, and all but the youngest grandkids are adept at creating pottery. Those family connections and her love of the Delta region have inspired Miller to keep her thriving business in the town where it began. “The Delta suits us,” she says. “It’s laid back and friendly and it’s our home.” (870) 382-5277, www.millersmudmill.com www.athomearkansas.com 15

PHOTOGRAPHY: NANCY NOLAN/STYLING: MANDY KEENER/POSTCARDS COURTESY OF NEIL PALMER OF CRYSTAL HILL ANTIQUE MALL

A North Little Rock collector’s array of antique Arkansas maps provides a portal into the state’s past By Paulette Pearson

www.athomearkansas.com 17

A map does more than help you get where you’re going. If you ask Phil Langley, owner of Happenstance, an antique prints and framing shop located in North Little Rock’s Crystal Hill Antique Mall, it can also reveal a little something about the places you’ve been. Langley has collected antique maps for nearly three decades. While many of Arkansas’ small towns have changed or altogether disappeared over the years, what he likes most about his collection is that it preserves these communities as they once were—providing a fascinating glimpse into the past. “It’s surprising how many customers come in and look for their home towns,” he says. “It touches them to see their old streets.” This connection between past and present is what first attracted Langley to his maps. He has 40 from Arkansas. Dating back to 1901, one shows Pulaski County near the time the farmhouse he shares with his family was built there. Others are gridded government survey maps. Their level of craftsmanship also appeals to Langley. Many were printed on a pure cotton material, which is thicker and ages well compared to today’s fast-fading wood pulp paper. They were then engraved with black ink, using a steel or copper plate, before being colorfully hand-painted by skilled artists. “An amazing attention to detail,” Langley describes. Not something you’re likely to find in any stage of mass production today, he notes. Companies like Johnson and Colton, which dominated the map-making industry in the 1800s, also added a characteristic thick, decorative border, making their work highly collectible. It often ended up in national atlases, and with pertinent information about population, demographics or livestock density, served as the only window many people had into the workings of other states. Their popularity forces Langley to look out of state for Arkansas maps, particularly from the coveted pre-Civil War era. He’s also had luck with old encyclopedias and textbooks. But he doesn’t dwell on rarity or perfection. He simply buys what he likes, makes certain it is in good condition, and then frames it. In a fast-paced world of GPS navigation, even vintage service station maps, many of which featured fun facts about local tourist destinations, have become collectible items. “It’s a shame,” Langley says. “Technology is great and gets us where we’re going, but sometimes I think we miss out on some of the journey. When traveling, I like to know what my surroundings are and whether I’ve ever been there before. A map also helps me appreciate where I am.” 18

Rustic Re-do

A decrepit log cabin is given new life as an inspiring art studio overlooking Beaver Lake

PHOTOGRAPHY: RETT PEEK/STYLING: DIANE CARROLL

By Diane Carroll

Having rescued and restored six log cabins during the last three decades, Cynthia and Kirk Dupps proudly admit to “having a thing” for these rustic structures. “They’re like comfort food to us, our macaroni and cheese,” laughs Cynthia. “We both grew up in Kentucky, and they feel like part of our roots, and surely a part of history.” From the first structure they renovated in Kentucky years ago, they progressed to resuscitating four more when they relocated to northwest Arkansas. Little surprise then that when they recently built their dream home on acreage overlooking Beaver Lake, adding a log cabin on the property soon figured into the picture. Cynthia, an artist and past president of the Eureka Springs School of the Arts, found she needed more space and fewer interruptions than her studio built into the hallway of their home could provide. During jaunts to the Buffalo River area, the Dupps’ eldest daughter and her husband had discovered a small, sagging log cabin from the early 1900s that the owner was planning to tear down. Cynthia and her family saw the home’s potential as the base for a studio on their wooded homestead, and began the process of having the cabin disassembled, each log numbered, and then rebuilt in the new locale. An avid recycler, Cynthia made use of the entire original structure and added other vintage elements as needed. “The cabin was just two dark, tiny rooms with low ceilings—100 years ago, people were shorter,” she says. “We decided to enlarge it and vault the ceilings to let in more daylight.” In doing so, they were able to repurpose the wood from the ceiling and use it as flooring. A concrete foundation was poured for a new room added alongside the log cabin, and Cynthia tied the two sections together by integrating reclaimed barn wood, flea-market-find doors and antique windows. 24

At Home in Arkansas

Before

The new three-room space became her own personal artistic retreat, a place where she creates jewelry, conducts art classes for her grandchildren and occasional students, and hosts shows twice a year highlighting her new work and other area artists. The original cabin’s living area serves as display space for her jewelry shows, the adjacent room functions as a kitchen, holding refreshments during her receptions and sporting a vintage refrigerator, and the new area is her light-filled work space. “One of the bright spots in my life is instructing our grandchildren in jewelry design, painting and more,” says Cynthia, noting that being able to do so in her log cabin combines both of her passions. “Inspirational works of art, interiors that I’ve rescued from bygone days, and the serenity of this setting serve me up a double dose of contentment,” she adds.

Keeping It Simple In Bella Vista, an architect’s personal philosophy inspires an easy-going lakeside kitchen

PHOTOGRAPHY: RETT PEEK/STYLING: DIANE CARROLL

By Elizabeth Owen

A mix of soapstone and Carrera marble countertops, a porcelain apron-front sink from Kohler and maple flooring from Armstrong create an informal, relaxed look in the kitchen of Chip and Susan Chambers’ vacation house on Lake Windsor. www.athomearkansas.com 27

Pale blue and yellow walls reflect the color palette used throughout the house and draw attention to the windows and the view beyond. Facing page: The custom cabinetry features counter-height drawers and baseboard detailing.

When architect Chip Chambers and his wife, Susan, designed a second home on Bella Vista’s Lake Windsor, they envisioned a simple yet functional kitchen with an easy-touse layout. “We knew we wanted it to be open, bright and cheery,” says Chambers. The end result is a breakfast room positioned to take advantage of stunning lake views, and a kitchen that hosts numerous family functions. Chambers’ philosophy on remodeling or building a kitchen is simple: “You start with something to hang your hat on, one design element you know you must have.” And whether it’s a specific color or must-have appliance, he recommends designing the rest of the room around it. “The most successful kitchens have no more than two to three main elements that keep things harmonious,” he explains. He and Susan began the kitchen project by adhering to their motto and choosing their main element, the cabinetry, first. “We knew from the beginning that we wanted crisp,

28

white cabinets with a simple style, so that was our jumping off point,” Chambers notes. The island, the kitchen’s second main element, required experimentation. In an effort to add character and distinction from the surrounding cabinetry, they decided to stain it and sampled a wide variety of colors. They opted for a watery blue shade to complement the home’s lakeside location. In designing a kitchen with less square footage than that of a main home, Chambers knew function needed to dictate many of the design decisions. “It’s a small kitchen, but we wanted it to feel as roomy as possible,” he says. An open floor plan helped the space feel larger than its actual footprint, and building appliances, like a main oven and a microwave one, into the island maximized counter space. Interior designer Vanessa Jacky-Davis was a key player in choosing wall colors, a juxtaposition of pale yellow and blue to reflect the room’s laid-back lakeside appeal, as well as the

farmhouse-style furniture and café curtains that keep the breakfast room casual and cozy. The kitchen’s functionality is put to the test several times each year as the entire Chambers clan, including their Boston-based daughter, their son who resides in California and their teenage son, gather for family retreats. “The concept behind the kitchen and guesthouse was to provide a casual and comfortable place to come and spend a few weeks together each summer,” says Susan. Recently, the space became the site of an even more memorable event, when the Chambers hosted their eldest son’s wedding reception. With tents set up near the water, the kitchen was ground zero for catering and serving. “The kitchen came through for us,” Chambers says. “Despite the crowd, the entire space functioned well, and surely that’s the measure of a good kitchen.”

3UMMER FRESH WINDOW BOXES instantly add curb appeal. In search of colorful new ideas, we asked Jennifer Gibson of The Good Earth Garden Center in Little Rock to update a trio of window boxes of a Heights neighborhood residence. Using only a pair of garden gloves and her hands as tools, she helped us create three easy styles. “I like any flowers that greet you at the door,” our expert says. “It’s an unexpected treat.” We asked homeowner Margaret Kemp and her daughter, Rebecca, to choose a favorite look. The winner? A casual mix of contrasting colors and textures, including petunias, sweet potato vine and spike grass. “It adds so much to the house and my spirit to have something fresh,” Margaret says. www.athomearkansas.com 31

Summer sends Arkansans in search of water—to the lake or river for cool breezes and tranquil views. While easy summer living may be the goal, owners of waterfront homes show their style in a myriad of ways. We’ve rounded up two top examples of how varied lakeside living can be, from a luxe, antique-filled villa in Hot Springs to a casually chic abode in Heber Springs. Despite the different décor, the focus is the same: it’s all about the views.

In Junie and Becky Simpson’s elegant Hot Springs lake house, interior designer Scott Paterek of Massimo kept the emphasis on the views by using clean-lined upholstery, including a solid quilted daybed and chocolate sofa, and by scaling down accessories with statement pieces like quartz spheres. For an aged look, the walls were painted in Pratt & Lambert’s Croissant and then glazed, while exterior stucco on the arches adds texture and weight.

A pair of lamps made from gilded antique candelabras anks a terracotta bust in the dining room. The oors are reclaimed barn wood and the wallpaper is by David Goldberg Design. Paterek created a coral centerpiece on the table as an organic contrast to the more formal elements.

38 At Home in Arkansas

At Home in Arkansas:

What inspired an Italian palazzo look on Lake Hamilton? Scott Paterek of Massimo:

The homeowners [Junie and Becky Simpson of Pine Bluff] had traveled to Italy and wanted a Mediterranean look. We used exterior stucco on the interior arches for texture and weight, and the tile roof is a blend of three subtle colors to appear sun-bleached. Botanica Gardens also added herbs spilling out of the beds for a European feel. AHIA: How did you capitalize on the views? SP: With expansive windows and lots of glass. We paid attention to the way the rooms are furnished to keep all the view lines open. In the living room, the day bed faces the fireplace, and the chairs are pulled back from the windows so they don’t block the views. It did present some challenges, but ultimately just required more thought and creativity. AHIA: You managed to keep things open and uncluttered as well. SP: We wanted it to be traditional but with fewer objects. Whenever we added an accessory, it was one that had volume. We also chose clean-lined upholstery over more traditional skirted furniture. AHIA: Symmetry seems to be a recurring theme. SP: We do like symmetry in traditional work. The homeowners tended to buy pairs even before we met them, and that trickled down a bit to this project. The pair of chests that now flanks the bed in the master bedroom had always been separated, and I was determined to keep them together in the same room here. AHIA: Did the homeowners have items they wanted to incorporate in this home? SP: Antiques, mostly French, and art are passions of theirs. We added more French pieces, but with cleaner lines. It will eventually be their full-time home, so they wanted to use all the pieces they had collected over the years, just with a simplified look. AHIA: Tell us about the art. SP: We added a couple of contemporary pieces. Their collection is varied, which I really like. I don’t think a house is as interesting when the focus is on one kind of art. A variation makes it feel not so decorated and not so new. AHIA: There’s a richness and warmth to the color palette. How did you choose colors? SP: The materials inspired us. In the bedroom suite, for

example, the homeowners selected a marble with terracotta tones, and we thought that darker color would make the overall space cozy in the evening. We didn’t say, “I love this paint color.” Instead, it evolved from the marble or stone or wood. AHIA: So, warmer tones can be suitable in a waterfront setting? SP: The warmer palette is still very soft. The camel has quite a bit of green and doesn’t turn pink as many taupes do. It’s more natural. AHIA: Tell us about the formal gold accents and accessories. SP: The homeowners always had them, so it was a reverse challenge—to be elegant but not to the degree that it w ou ld b e of f-p ut t i ng or u nc om for t a ble. T he upholstery being comfy and not too complicated helped. AHIA: What components were most important in the kitchen? SP: We were conscious that the kitchen is open to the living room and wanted to give it a dressiness. The homeowners also love to cook and entertain, and for others to be in the kitchen with them when they cook. It had to have a lot of storage and counter space. There’s a big walk-in pantry with a laundry behind the kitchen. The offkitchen storage helped keep it clean and open. AHIA: The outdoor space includes a sunny upstairs patio, a covered porch and a grassy lawn. Great versatility in that. SP: We planned for times of the year when a cover isn’t important, and we added a fire pit with seating by the lake for different ways to entertain. The homeowners often spend time outdoors with their children and grandchildren. I wanted the outdoor space to feel like an extension of the home, which is especially enjoyable on a waterfront locale. 39

Antique candelabras on the mantle are from Marshall Clements. The kitchen has a carved travertine backsplash and spacious granite countertops for entertaining. Coral serves as a permanent centerpiece for impromptu parties. The exterior features stucco and a tile roof in a blend of colors to appear sun-bleached. Outdoor furniture, from Ken Rash’s, includes a low table for easy dining and conversation. Delicate Murano glass accessories balance the heavy zinc mirror. At Home in Arkansas:

This place looks as if it could be at the beach—one part classic Cape Cod and one part casual Seaside, Florida. But it also feels right at home on this hillside near Heber Springs. Kevin Walsh of Bear-Hill Interiors:

The homeowners, Jeff and Melanie Fox, wanted this house to feel different than their home in Little Rock. That house has darker colors, and from the beginning they talked about this house being light and bright, traditional but casual. Melanie showed the architect, Ellen Yeary, and me some images of houses she liked; they had a Southern style we interpreted as the kind of place you’d find at the beach or on a lake. AHIA: How did the Foxes envision using the house? KW: As a getaway for their family of four—they have a 10-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son, and a dog that loves to come to the lake too. Plus they wanted it to be a place where friends and family could hang out comfortably. AHIA: From the moment you enter, the emphasis of each of the main rooms is clearly the view. KW: Our goal was for people to walk in and say “look at those views!” not “look at this furniture!” Ellen designed the floor plan so that all the main rooms are at the rear of the house and face the lake, and the front of the house is for service areas—hallways, laundry and powder rooms. We used beautiful, big windows and French doors, and then kept the fabrics and draperies low-key so that your attention is continually drawn outside. That was a conscious part of our decision-making, and in some rooms we added elements that contributed to drawing your eye up and out, like adding paneling three-quarters of the way up the foyer wall. It creates a sight line that carries out into the room. We even used chandeliers that you can easily see through, instead of something solid and expansive. The blue light fixture over the dining table does capture your attention a bit, but it’s the one special piece, the jewelry in the room. AHIA: You chose a cool color palette throughout, all sorts of blues and creams and khakis. KW: The colors were one of Melanie’s original directives. She wanted light and bright, and she was interested in using blue, which sounded ideal to me and a very fitting palette for this kind of home. I’m a proponent of using neutral fabrics for your main elements and then adding color on top, with pillows and accessories. It’s easier and much more affordable to buy new pillows and lamps when you tire of a color than to re-do upholstery and draperies. AHIA: Dark colors are often the standard for hiding dirt and 48

creating easy living spaces in a casual family house. How did you make this crisp space still function well for a family of four and their friends? KW: That’s a critical element for any kind of vacation home. You have to be able to go there for rest and enjoyment, not to clean. We used fabrics that are commercial grade or very durable and stain resistant. In a few indoor areas, we used outdoor fabrics, like Sunbrella fabric on the dining chairs. They can literally be wiped clean with a damp sponge. We also brought in some textural fabrics and linen that look best if they’re casual and loose. Aged floors that wouldn’t show dirt and are easy to clean were one of our first picks for the house. They’re reclaimed wood in mixed widths, so they’re casual, and their light color matches the Foxes’ dog’s hair. AHIA: The kitchen looks like an ideal command center, situated with a view of the lake. KW: It’s a logical kitchen for entertaining, since it’s open to the living and dining rooms, and the screened porch is just steps away. You’re never removed from your family or guests when you’re in it. We kept the counter area open so it doesn’t feel closed off. AHIA: The screened porch seems to be the place where you’d find a crowd. KW: There are four club chairs, a sofa and 10 dining chairs, plus a hearth along the fireplace where people can sit, so it’s definitely designed for entertaining. With the fireplace, grill and sink, it can accommodate outdoor dining a good part of the year. We made sure it was ultra easy-care too, with stone flooring and teak furniture that will naturally weather and match the soft palette of the house. When the familiy leaves, they cover it all, and when they come back, they take the covers off and are ready to host a party. Isn’t that what we all would like in a vacation home?

The kitchen bar stools are covered in a Lee Jofa fabric with a high durability rating. Handcrafted and glazed tile on the backsplash reects light from the series of doors and windows in the living area. Blue and gray tones in the granite countertop complement the colors used in the open room.

49

50

The screened porch and an adjacent terrace overlooking the lake are prime locations for entertaining, and feature a durable flagstone floor that extends from inside to out. Sherwin-Williams’ Misty coats the woodwork, and a chandelier from Light Innovations brightens the seating area. Melanie Fox and daughter, Madison, begin dinner in the outdoor kitchen, and then join (from right to left) the Foxes’ son, Davis, and his friends, Jordan Sink and Kyle Parham, on the terrace.

51

In the master bedroom, Sherwin-Williams’ Loggia covers the walls; celadon-colored bedding and accents are a variation on the blue shades used in the main rooms. Facing page (clockwise from left): Antique ships and a bench from Bella Boutique line the hallway. Davis’ room features Sherwin-Williams’ Stamped Concrete on the walls and fabrics from Kravet. In the master bathroom, two tones of travertine create a geometric pattern. Madison selected Sherwin-Williams’ Spa for the wall color in her bedroom, which includes a daybed clad with Sunbrella fabric.
