Spa-like Indulgences

W

ho doesn’t love a spa day? Hours spent in a fluffy robe and slippers, listening to calming music and sipping herbal tea (or, better yet, champagne) while talented technicians quietly escort you to softly-lit rooms to be primped and pampered. Aaah. But really, how often do we give ourselves a day like that? We’re all so very busy. And that’s the perfect reason to bring that spa-like atmosphere into our own private spaces. Our Bath Issue features a treasure trove of brilliantly-designed bathrooms, as well as some great new products to up the luxe quotient. And here are a few other tips for infusing serenity: add some aromatherapy—through candles, diffusers or plants (such as dried lavender); invest in a deep soaking tub; splurge on top-quality bath products like organic soaps, therapeutic salts and natural sea sponges; install a dimmer on the overhead light. Whether you make a big change or just a little one, indulge in something that will make your private bath more like a spa. Then all you’ll have to do is find someone to bring you that glass of bubbly. Cheers,

Elaine St. Louis

My Current Obsessions

Pretty Bath Accessories: My home is nearly 75 years old, so the bathrooms are tiny. But thanks to previous owners with great taste, they’re also beautifully renovated; all I have to do is add the details that will turn them into little jewel boxes. This new collection of hand-blown glass accessories from Waterworks is soft, elegant and just plain pretty. waterworks.com Wonderful Wallcoverings: Wallpaper is back in a big way, and I am in love. Big, bold graphics, touchable textures, and the use of shimmery metallics makes me want to paper every wall in a different style. One of my new favorites: the Hampton Trellis from Waverly Classics by York Wallcoverings, a traditional pattern updated with pewter metallic ink. yorkwall.com Colorado Art: I’ve always been a big proponent of shopping locally, and that includes supporting our thriving arts community. Louisville-based ceramics artist Rita Vali’s Napkin Bowls recently became mine, purchased at the Art Students League of Denver’s DelecTABLE exhibit. Now I just want more. ritavali.com 10

Sorrel Sky Gallery

n 1860, a little glint in the sunshine signaled the discovery of gold and the creation of the town of Durango. Nestled in Southwestern Colorado’s Animas Valley between the La Plata and San Juan Mountains at a sky-skimming elevation of 6,512 feet, this tiny mountain town flourished with the construction of the Silverton Branch of the famed narrow-gauge railroad. The fiercely independent and entrepreneurial spirit of those original settlers mining for riches remains alive today in thriving downtown Durango, a nationally registered historic district that contains hundreds of boutiques, art galleries, museums and restaurants. As in all mountain towns, outdoor sports rule here, with winter skiing and summer biking leading the pack. But the sport of shopping is in full swing all year long; take a day to wander the charming streets and discover your own little golden nugget.

Up Close and Personal

B y Hilary Masell Oswald

Be warned: Monique Crine’s art might make you feel like you’re eavesdropping. The Denver artist’s hyper-realistic works capture moments of soul-baring exposure, and before you know it, you’ve fallen into the subject’s life, spellbound by the single slice of time Crine’s work reveals

CH&L: Have you always been an artist? Were you the kid in art class in elementary school who rocked the papier-mâché dinosaur? Monique Crine: Maybe, but don’t you think we’re all artists when we’re kids? We all arrive in the world with the urge to make art. Mine just never went away. I think I always knew that I wanted to be an artist, but I resisted it. I said I wanted to be a dentist for a while, but it had nothing to do with actually being a dentist. I just wanted to decorate an office. All my life has always been about design and beauty. I can’t think of anything else I’ve ever really wanted to do. You resisted it? Why? I grew up in a military family, and my family was so practical. I needed a back-up plan. That’s why I got dual degrees in art history and studio art in college. The art history was my attempt at practicality. I think that military background is somewhat represented in my art: I want my work to be accessible to everyone. So how did you end up working in photography and oils? Ooh, I think it’s a good story. My first understanding of art was photography. My grandfather was a press photographer during the JFK administration. He let me use his camera even as a young kid. You know how adults let a kid use their camera for two seconds before snatching it away? My grandfather wasn’t like that. He let me

30

explore the camera. I fell in love. I still only shoot 35-millimeter film. I love the delay in seeing the image. There’s no immediate gratification, but as with many of life’s best things, the wait is worth it. In my early 20s, I did a bunch of really terrible abstract painted pieces. Everyone does this—at least, that’s what I tell myself. Then I took a painting course off-campus during college, and I went from making

abstract crap to these photo-based paintings. Have you ever met anyone who speaks the same language you do, who explains it exactly how you need to hear it? That’s how my teacher was. Once you know how to do something well, when you first get it, you can’t stop doing it. That’s how it’s been for me. So are you a photographer or a painter— or both?

I consider myself a painter who does photography. I feel like I have a painter’s eye when I photograph. It’s cinematic. Tell me about that process. It’s either one of two things: I use images taken without the purpose of becoming paintings, or I’m using images I inherited, like the ones of JFK from my grandfather. If I’m shooting someone, we create a kind of staged reality. I capture the subjects in their environments, wearing whatever they’re usually wearing, and then I pose them as themselves. It’s a kind of docufiction. Then I develop the images and decide which I’ll paint. How do you choose? It’s all in how I feel about it. Sometimes an image comes up and is meant to be a photograph. And sometimes I see an image that just asks to be painted. People always ask: Why do you feel this need to paint the image? I feel there’s something really special about how the temporality is extended so much in the painting. There’s this moment when people see a painting and realize it’s not a photograph. They consider it more. They spend more time with it. Maybe they deconstruct stereotypes. Maybe they build stereotypes. But they’re engaged in a way that extends the moment in that image. I love that. And from far off my paintings look precise, but up close you can see the gestures of the hand that imply human nature and imperfection. It’s like life: nuanced, flawed, a reminder that your first impression isn’t always correct. I like that, too.

And you like to feature individuals, not groups. Why? It’s about that intimate connection with my subject as I’m working with him or her. There’s never an audience when I’m photographing. I always shoot in a person’s home or place of domestic comfort. When there are other people involved, they all kind of perform for each other, and I think that comes across in the image. I want the images to be vehicles for self-reflection and self-observation. I want them to be honest. The best way I’ve found to capture that truth is to work with a single subject at a time. Is portraying the truth the ultimate goal of your work? Maybe that sounds too highbrow. I don’t want it to. My work is all about the drama that is American life. A lot of the paintings are about the moments between the moments. That’s where the subjects are considering themselves. They’re reflecting on their own lives, on their failures and successes. I’m not interested in happy images, per se. I’m interested in images that can be read either way. Some of these subjects are so thoughtfully considering themselves that it gives the viewer a chance to sit with herself [or himself], too. I think that’s a kind of gift, a moment to breathe and reflect. I try not to be too sentimental, though I will confess to you that I love melodramas. I love emotional tension. It’s hard not to get emotional. These are people’s lives I’m conveying. It’s a huge privilege. To learn more about Monique Crine’s work, contact the artist directly at moniquecrine.com

Earthy Escape

esigning a bathroom without the advantage of natural light can be a challenge. But not for Jodi Cook, of Ashley Campbell Interior Design, who came up with plenty of bright ideas to keep this lower level Westminster bath from feeling cramped and dark. “The clients wanted a spa-like bathroom that featured a large shower with body sprays, a sauna, heated floors, and a lighting solution that offered flexibility and visual interest,” Cook remembers. “A lot of features had to fit into a space that isn’t terribly large, so we had to plan wisely.” So what was the secret to creating a feeling of spaciousness? “We used light-colored stone and we installed ample lighting on walls and floors rather than only in the ceiling,” Cook explains. “Space-saving elements like shoji screeninspired doors to the WC and a barn-style shower door allowed us to incorporate as many features as possible without crowding the room.” Her clients’ fondness for Asia set the tone for the overall style of the quietly luxurious bath, favoring earthy colors and clean lines. One design feature in particular had captivated Cook’s clients on their travels—a floor channel of loose pebbles. “We decided that this would be a great detail to include in the bath since it offered the opportunity to add a lighting feature to the floor by including rope lighting in the channel,” Cook explains. But the existing concrete slab floor made that option especially complicated. “We knew we could build up the floor to accommodate the depth of the channel, but that would sacrifice ceiling height and require us to have a step up into the bathroom,” she recalls. So they decided instead to dig in, chipping away 28 linear feet of concrete. Cook says, “It was a messy and time-consuming chore, but the results were worth it.” With the flexibility offered by layers of lighting casting a glow on natural stone in a warm palette, this serene, spa-like space has an elegantly earthy appeal.

38

Jodi’s TIPS

n Don’t be afraid to use the same color tile throughout the bathroom if you have a small bath. A monochromatic color scheme can make the space look larger, and monochromatic does not mean boring. You can easily add interest by varying the size and finish of the tile.

n Get to know your local craftsmen or hire a designer who knows

the best local craftsmen. They can create custom pieces when you have a challenging space and can’t find a stock piece to fit. In this bath, Coates Custom Design fabricated a custom concrete vanity with an integrated sink.

n When installing body sprays, be sure to consider the height of the people who will be using them. Our clients are both tall, so we installed the body sprays a little higher than is typical.

n If your bathroom doesn’t have large-enough countertops to require a full slab, consider looking at remnants at the stone yard. You can find great material, and save some money.

Classically Modern P hotography by Gibeon Photography

hen interior designer Runa Novak, of Aspenbased In Your Space, first encountered this 1990s-era bath, it was dark and crowded “and there was a window with ruined wood actually inside the shower!” she recalls with a laugh. The original layout of the room was admittedly odd, with a door between the two vanities, and a “funky built-in tub” tucked away in a dark corner. “There were so many angles, diagonal lines and weird placement of windows,” Novak observed. “My goal was to open it up and make it lighter,” she says, and that’s exactly what she did, emphasizing clean, simple lines and calm pale shades of white, gray and taupe. The exquisite handcrafted glass mosaic shower tiles set the tone, and the rest of the bath was designed to play a supporting role, in a similar color palette but with plenty of textural variety. Large Carrara marble wall tiles below the chair rail give a touch of elegance, while Asian Statuary marble in a basket-weave pattern makes a cool

and sophisticated floor surface. Inner Waters 8 by Udo Nöger, from Denver’s Walker Fine Art, hangs above the freestanding bathtub. Novak drastically re-configured the room to make it more usable and comfortable: moving a door, putting together the two vanities, enlarging a window, relocating the tub and shower. “I played with the shape of the space that was given, and it worked,” the designer says. Novak called upon her commercial design experience to introduce floor-to-ceiling glass shower walls and a linear “trench” shower drain for an uncluttered look. The floating vanity with pale custom cabinetry is topped with a Caesarstone solid surface and semirecessed vessel sinks. “And I went as big as I could go on the mirrors,” she adds. Crystal chandeliers from Uttermost Lights give the space a lively sparkle. When a room is nearly all white, it runs the risk of feeling cold and stark, but Novak’s deft touch manages to keep this bath textured, balanced and luxuriously icy-warm.

41

Runa’s TIPS

n If you have an irregularly shaped bathroom, stay away

from heavy or chunky built-ins and fixtures that accentuate the room’s asymmetry. Play with items to camouflage the unevenness of the room—light fixtures mounted from a ceiling will hide the fact that the walls don’t match.

n Make the space open and airy by using floating vanities, a freestanding tub and open glass showers.

n Keep colors monochromatic. Have fun mixing shapes and sizes of monochromatic tiles. Believe it or not, it will never be too much. n Create warmth through texture: blend different details

in mirrors, decorative lighting and tiles. All good design comes down to a balancing act. I love contrasting items that complement each other.

Soothing the Senses Photography by Kimberly gavin

B

lending a high-tech bathroom into a 1904 Denver Foursquare home might seem like a tough balancing act, but Chris Awadalla, a designer with Denver-based Interior Intuitions, managed to make it look easy in this historic residence. From the beginning, the project was destined to be oneof-a-kind. The homeowner wanted the second floor bath to reflect his deeply spiritual nature and also to be truly unique. And then it had to have a few modern touches. “I was incredibly lucky that the client was open to any and all ideas,” Awadalla recalls. “There was never a time when he said, ‘that’s too much’ or ‘I’ve never seen that before so I don’t want to do it.’” An unexpected discovery set the tone. “As soon as demolition began we uncovered an original brick wall and immediately saw the potential,” Awadalla explains, calling the warm brick surface “a truly organic feature in the overall space.” The dark charcoal-colored concrete for the vanity tops, integrated sink and shower bench was specially blended to include flakes

45

of red to match the brick wall. And the cool slate gray cabinetry, built especially high to hide the corner toilet, neutralizes the ruddy tones of the wall beyond. Artwork by Sabin Aell, from Walker Fine Art, adds a balancing jolt of blue. But the shower enclosure just might be the star of this particular room. Built with an integrated planter (complete with its own drainage system) at the end of the concrete shower bench to take advantage of the abundant Colorado light shining through the glass block window, the shower is a feast for the senses. Awadalla explains, “Because time for meditation is important, I specified a steam shower system that includes chromatherapy (specialized lighting in six different colors to match your mood), aromatherapy (in scents such as eucalyptus, orange peel, pine) and an integrated audio system that syncs via Bluetooth to a smartphone.” Mosaic wall tiles with dream-like outlines of trees and branches soothe the eyes while a pebbled floor surface soothes the feet. “It’s a calming space that really does capture the character of the homeowner,” Awadalla says. With a harmonious mix of old and new, this bath achieves a timeless serenity.

Chris’s TIPS

n During a remodel, it’s not uncommon to encounter something

that offers you an opportunity to change your design. In this bath, I made a major design change after discovering the beautiful brick wall. Don’t be afraid to modify your design as the project progresses.

Interior Designer Chris Awadalla Interior Intuitions Inc. interiorintuitions.com

n Don’t underestimate the importance of good lighting in your bath-

room; it shouldn’t be an afterthought. At the vanity, install lights on either side of the mirror at eye level. When combined with adequate ceiling lighting (think 4” recessed can lights on a dimmer) this is the very best light for grooming.

n Consider installing a heated floor in your bathroom. There is a

misconception that heated floors are a very costly upgrade, but in reality, while this feature is an additional cost, I’ve found that it is rarely so much that the homeowner won’t consider it. Stepping out of a bathtub onto a heated surface makes a big difference in the wintertime. Radiant heat is also a very efficient way to heat your space, and you may even be able to eliminate a heat duct.

European Elegance

R

Photography by Kimberly gavin

ich shades of mocha blended with graceful Old World details makes this Vail bath a sumptuous space. And that’s just the effect designer Melissa Greenauer, of Greenauer Design Group, Inc., had in mind when she set out to tame the bare, vaulted-ceilinged bathroom of the home. “It was what we refer to in the industry as ‘a vanilla box,’” Greenauer remembers. Combined with towering windows, “the space was not cozy, warm or personal,” she says. The designer’s first step was to address these troublesome structural issues. “The ceiling heights were very high and there were odd-angled pitches,” she recalls. Her solution? Scaling the ceiling to better fit the space—lowering it and in the process opening up valuable attic storage space for the homeowners—while also reconfiguring the master closet to create a small niche perfect for a ladylike makeup table. Inspired by the elegant sophistication of European chalets, Greenauer designed a show-stopping arched mirror, with a glass border back-painted with silver and gold leaf, in a French process known as eglomise, to add drama. (“Pick one feature and do it right,” Greenauer advises.) Curvy iron sconces, retro-styled satin nickel Rohl faucets and traditional glazed cabinets topped by a Calcutta Gold marble counter with hints of gold and silver veining set a refined tone. Chocolate-hued Café Noir marble tiles accented by subtle accents of Giallo Gold travertine provide a gorgeous backdrop for the Kohler Vintage freestanding cast-iron bath (with Rohl fixtures) that is “big enough for two to cuddle,” Greenauer notes. A woodsy birch-bark-andwillow-framed mirror tops the dainty makeup table, flanked by a pair of antique candlestick crystal lamps the designer found in New York. The petite Frog Chair, by Michael Taylor, is upholstered with outdoor fabric for durability. The mountains outside are still pure Vail, but inside this former vanilla box a warm and elegant European luxury has arrived.

49

Melissa’s TIPS

n Lower bathroom ceiling heights

can make warm and functional spaces for grooming, bathing and showering. Save the vaulted ceilings for larger main rooms.

n Capture natural light with

windows or create proper functional and flattering light for personal grooming. It’s very important not to have recessed down lighting on your body or face. Indirect, dimmable light sources are flattering in intimate spaces such as shower or tub areas.

n Tile doesn’t need to be

expensive or overly decorative. You can create interest with tile layouts, patterns and the direction of the tile installation.

n Tiling shower ceilings is a big

priority for my bathroom designs, and wall niches (out of direct view) are a must for shower and bath products.

n Don’t have too many focal

points in a small bathroom space. Pick one outstanding feature and make the room around it. Interior Designer Melissa Greenauer Greenauer Design Group, Inc. greenauer.com

Photo Finish Photographer Emily Minton Redfield is no stranger to good design, having shot hundreds of homes for dozens of magazines. That keen eye is reflected in the beauty of her own Denver home By sally stich Photography by Emily Minton redfield

A

love of beauty is solidly stamped on the DNA of Denver-based photographer Emily Minton Redfield. Her father, renowned Fort Worth, Texas, designer Joseph Minton, took her antique-hunting all over the world and schlepped her to photo shoots at an early age. Her mother grew up in a home filled with art collected by globe-trotting parents.

With the help of her father, interior designer Joseph Minton, and Denver-based designer Petra Richards, homeowner Emily Minton Redfield created a formal entry by layering an antique farm table, a large mirror, two Asian antique chairs, two Mexican lamps and wonderful art. “The placement of the two blue stools—under and in front of the table—was Petra’s idea,” says Redfield. “I would’ve placed one on either side, both in front of or underneath the table. Petra knew that was too predictable.” Through the entryway is the dining room, where an 18th-century French farm table is flanked by a 19th-century banquette that Redfield found in her dad’s storage room. Lacquered orange bamboo chairs are paired with plumcolored padded seats that play off an antique rug from Turkey. (right) Purchased in 2001, Emily and Randall Redfield saw the potential of this 1910 Denver Square and spent years creating a family-friendly home that radiates light and life. 53

(opposite) The cozy living room is a study in balance and symmetry—and a showcase for family heirlooms. The sofa, owned by Redfield’s grandparents, dates to the American Revolution and is now covered in a modern, textured fabric. Two distressed French chairs bring in elements of gold, reinforced by the gold clover-leaf side table. The Fortuny chandelier was a gift from Redfield’s father. (This page, top) Redfield added interest to white bookshelves by lining them with wallpaper from Serena & Lily. (above, left) An early 19th-century Texas table sits by the front door with a Buddha head picked up in Southeast Asia. The antique camera on the coffee table (from Joseph Minton’s furniture line) is part of Redfield’s collection. (above, right) Who says family heirlooms can’t be mixed with off-the-floor accessories? Redfield paired a painting from her grandmother with a bar cart from Crate and Barrel. The bird in the window? “That’s a Petra touch,“ says Redfield. “She thinks there should be critters all over the house.” 55

56

The family room is in the back of the home and juxtaposes textures, colors, and styles. An orange leather custom sofa faces an antique Mexican armoire. Palecek’s Petrified Wood Lava Coffee Table from CAI Denver sits in rustic contrast to the antique inlaid chest/side table. The recently upholstered armchair is covered in flowery Marquesa Pistache by Raoul Fabrics and sits opposite an antique bergère chair.

Along with my own “ years of experience working with design, I had an informal dream team helping me when I redid this house.

—Emily Minton Redfield

“My visual instincts are inbred,” says Redfield. “Early on I learned to recognize fine pieces, and I learned about balance and symmetry, color and texture, mixing old and new.” All of these lessons came in handy for her future career, as did one memorable photo shoot. “When I was 10, our house was shot as the cover story for Architectural Digest,” she says. ”I was transfixed by the process even though I had no idea it would be my profession.” But after travelling through Southeast Asia with a camera, she realized she had an “addiction to photography.” When Redfield discovered a talent for photographing home interiors she embraced the profession fully. As a staff photographer for Southern Living, she refined her craft. “Back then, I spent most of my time setting up lighting,” she says. Over time—and with the advent of digital technology—she learned to focus on the beauty of each room. “My job is to show a home at its best—to capture how each space is the sum of its parts.” Redfield’s talent has served her well in a career that allows her to be a detached observer, but what was it like capturing her own home from behind the camera? “Along with my own years of experience working with design,” she says, “I had an informal dream team helping me when I redid this house.” From her father, she took great advice on using space to its best advantage. “He has a classical sensibility and an innate sense of where furniture should go.” From her best friend, Denver interior designer Petra Richards, she gained advice on fabrics and accessories. “Petra has a playful, artful eye,” she says. “She helped me move objects to unexpected places that add a real wow factor.” Redfield also had the good sense years ago to marry Randall Redfield, who not only shares her love of older homes but also had amassed an enviable collection of Asian pieces. Once finished, the home was essentially camera-ready: softness and light mixed with rich color and pattern, an eclectic yet elegant mix of furnishings, antiques and art.

57

But Redfield had yet to learn the most important lesson: the agony and ecstasy of having one’s home published in a magazine. “At first, it’s very exciting,” she says. ”Then when the shoot starts, the fun fades as the photographer—in this case, me—and stylist take over, spend forever setting up shots, and making a mess on the floor with equipment. I couldn’t wait to throw all my [photography equipment] into the basement when I was done.” With the lesson learned and empathy gained, Redfield knows the ecstasy will return when, in a few months, her beautifully photogenic home is immortalized in the pages of a magazine to be shared with others who appreciate the nuances of fine design—and the talent of the photographer who captures them. an and Joe Kneib were looking for a home in a particular Colorado Springs neighborhood when they almost passed this one by. “We didn’t like the house at all from the photos, but when I saw it in person, I fell in love with all the light—the vaulted ceilings and large windows, the ease of living and the connection to the outdoors,” Jan Kneib says. Designed by architect Michael Collins and built in 1975, the U-shaped ranch house features a central courtyard with indoor/outdoor access from almost every room. Although the house needed a lot of work, Jan Kneib saw the potential to reshape the aesthetic to fit the couple’s taste. They wisely lived in the house for a year before embarking on a major renovation, giving them time to decide on what to keep, and what to ditch. “It was a process of elimination,” Kneib explains. “What became important to us were clean lines, warmth and a sense of symmetry.” The renovation included removing walls and soffits, replacing drywall, floors and fireplaces, and adding square footage for a new kitchen and master suite. Kitchen and bath designer Angela Otten of William Ohs Showrooms

(this page, above) Color is introduced to the dining room with eyelash upholstery fabric in four fun colors. The starburst mirror is by Thomas Pheasant and the porcelain piece on the table was hand-textured by Daniel Fisher. The Kneibs purchased the glass chandelier by Peter Mangan in 1990. Veteran art lover Jan Kneib offers tips for buying and collecting

When purchasing art, don’t just buy a name or a style. A piece should stir your soul—bring you joy, tears, laughter, shock, serenity. Be open to new discoveries. Art doesn’t need to cost a lot. Look for young emerging artists, styles or artforms that are not inherently expensive, such as photography or ceramics. Do your research (the Internet is invaluable for this). Look at the artist’s whole body of work and check out the artist at other galleries. Collect from different artists. Look at a variety of styles, always keeping in mind what touches your heart. Keep all receipts, documentation and appraisals. Insure key pieces. 63

joined the team early in the process, handling space planning and introducing finishes and materials to fulfill the Kneibs’ vision. The custom kitchen is a sleek study in gray and white with juicy orange accents. Custom gray-stained rift white oak cabinets offer depth and softness while a stainless steel tile backsplash, glossy white lacquer upper cabinets and ultra-white quartz countertops bounce light in every direction. The adjacent bar/butler’s pantry continues the theme with a glitzed-up personality of its own. Warmer tones of walnut cabinetry and onyx tile add richness to the straight lines and contemporary styling of the master bath. “The minimalism combined with warm wood colors has a soothing quality,” says Otten. The spacious new bathroom is well planned for two people, with double sinks, a large tub and walk-in shower. But it’s the powder room that most perfectly exhibits Jan Kneib’s sense of style (and humor) by juxtaposing the room’s original gold-plated faucets and sinks against quirky wallpaper featuring famed The New Yorker magazine cartoonist Saul Steinberg’s art. “I’m not very formal,” she says. “I like to have joy in my home.”

64

(this page, top) The family room, open to the kitchen, is part of the new addition. Metallic porcelain tiles define the fireplace, while a colorful Moroccan rug and blanket-upholstered chair add texture and color. (above) Situated between the kitchen and dining room, this open bar area also serves as a butler’s pantry. Otten repeated the gray kitchen cabinetry below but jazzed things up on top with back-painted glass cabinet doors and a dramatic etched-glass backsplash. The abstract landscape painting is by Alice Andrews.

The new kitchen, designed by Angela Otten of William Ohs Showrooms, is sleek and efficient, yet cheerful and welcoming. Open shelves below the peninsula offer an abundance of accessible storage. The wood veneer pendant lamp from YLighting adds a burst of color, and the raised marble counter invites seating while also providing some separation from the adjacent family room. Maple Cherner Vortex Chairs offer a contrasting sculptural element.

65

68

(opposite) Shades of gray cast beautiful shadows in this bedroom, where modern meets traditional. A French four-poster bed is updated in contemporary rusted steel; the desk and chair came with the house. The purple glass sculpture is by famed glass artist Dale Chihuly; eighteenth-century Italian architectural drawings complete the vignette. (this page, left) Book-matched quartered walnut cabinet doors in the new master bathroom complement Crema Marfil marble countertops, sparkling onyx tiles and terrazzo tile floors for a rich, spa-like atmosphere. (above) “I love those birds…happy, happy fun,” says Jan Kneib of her fanciful powder room wallpaper. The black lacquer vanity was custom built to accommodate the gold-plated sink and faucets, both original to the home. “It’s modern and classic at the same time,” Kneib says.

The homeowners filled their new house with the things that make them happiest—color and art. Brilliant rugs and fabrics explode in welledited pops of color, most notably the bright multi-hued dining room chairs. “They make people smile, which is what I want,” Kneib says. Colored glass art by the late Michael Higgins highlights the entry and living room in a vibrant pattern of circles and squares. Just as most of the art works have been collected and savored over time, the furniture is likewise well-seasoned—an eclectic mix of contemporary pieces from previous residences and a few treasures salvaged from the furnishings that were original to this house. The result is a very personal home. “I don’t need a house that is a showpiece,” says Kneib, “but one that feels comfortable to live in and entertain friends. A place to enjoy.”

Boulder’s Housing Market Bounces Back From Recession

coloradohomes.com

Average price for home sales up 13 percent from 2012

Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall is a gathering place for the community

By Margaret Jackson With an economy stimulated by thriving hightech companies and startups coming out of the University of Colorado, Boulder’s housing market is seeing a rapid recovery from the downturn many areas experienced during the Great Recession. Between 2012 and 2013, Boulder home sales increased by 8 percent from 1,890 to 2,043, and the average sales price increased nearly 13 percent from $521,880 to $588,227 during the same period. “Homes that sell the fastest are those that are within the city limits and priced below $1 million,” said Karen Bernardi, Broker Associate of The Bernardi Real Estate Group, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. “We have a lot of pent-up demand,” Bernardi

said. “Our employment has recovered, and the whole economy seems to be improving. We have a stock market that’s gone up, and low interest rates are helping home sales as well.” Bernardi says a variety of factors are contributing to the Boulder area’s robust housing market, but mostly because the area is a great place to live. “We have the university, symphony, theater and film festival,” Bernardi adds. “Boulder also has an art festival, galleries, scientists, an educated population and cultural diversity. It’s just a very cool community. It has a lot of features that many larger cities have, and is absolutely beautiful.” Homes within Boulder proper are not the only ones that are selling well. Cities within Boulder County that are more affordable than the city of Boulder, such as Louisville and Longmont, are also seeing an improving housing market. In Louisville, home sales increased 13.5 percent from 310 in 2012 to 352 in 2013. The average sales price increased 11 percent from $408,387 to $454,061 during the same period. In Longmont, sales increased 23.6 percent from 1,431 2012 to 1,769 in 2013. The average sales price rose 7 percent from $273,613 to $292,707 during the same period. “When I help relocate companies to the Boulder area, they initially say they can’t afford it,” Bernardi said. “Then I explain the situation in Longmont. You can get a beautiful home in Longmont for $350,000 and still feel like you’re attached to Boulder. “

The improved economy also has prompted increased commercial development activity. One of the most high-profile projects is the redevelopment of the old Boulder Daily Camera building at 11th and Pearl streets. The Nichols Partnership, which is based in Denver and paid $13.5 million for the site in November, plans to build a below-grade movie theater and three levels of structured parking above grade. Restaurant space will be built at street level, and offices will occupy the top three floors. Among the biggest projects proposed is a 400-seat amphitheater and pair of four-story office buildings totaling about 202,500 square feet, and 6,000 square feet of retail space at 30th and Pearl Streets. “Because of the many startups in Boulder,” Bernardi continues, “Banks are freeing up money to make commercial loans again, which helps our economy.” All of this adds up to a vibrant local economy here in the Boulder area, and a housing market that’s on the rise once again.

Camping, Broadmoor Style

T

the broadmoor

Surrounded by more than 100,000 acres of national forest, The Ranch at Emerald Valley is a blissfully quiet and picturesque place to leave the cares of everyday living behind

B y Erin English

the broadmoor

he renowned Broadmoor in Colorado Springs delivers elegance and grandeur perhaps better than any other resort in the state, and has received countless awards for excellence in hospitality and dining since its doors opened in 1918. But after nearly 100 years, the legendary lodge has decided to mix things up a little. In August of last year, to the delight of loyal guests and those with an affinity for the outdoors, The Broadmoor unveiled a cozy getaway set entirely on U.S. Forest Service land called The Ranch at Emerald Valley. Guests who arrive at the main hotel are whisked by a four-wheel-drive shuttle eight miles up a dirt road, to a secluded spot resplendent with thick woods, two pretty lakes and mountain views. The small, all-inclusive lodge, open only in the summer and fall, was a Girl Scout camp until 1916, when Spencer Penrose purchased the hotel and its surrounding 450 acres and transformed the campground into his own private retreat. So visitors shouldn’t be surprised to feel a few sweet pangs of nostalgia for their childhood sleep-away summer camp as they wander the grounds and admire the quaint log buildings. One step inside, however, is enough to erase the memory of messy cots and hanging flashlights. The beautifully appointed rooms, otherworldly cuisine, and doting staff are luxuriously grown-up. Ten cabins (one-, two- and three-bedroom

options) are outfitted with wood-burning fireplaces and richly hued, decidedly masculine furnishings: oversized comfy chairs, museum-quality western artwork and custom designed beds. The largest of the cabins features a gourmet kitchen, and a private chef may be hired for an additional fee. The main lodge is warmed by two additional fireplaces and includes casual seating, a dining room, and a stunning mahogany-and-stained-glass bar from the personal collection of The Broadmoor’s current owner, billionaire Philip Anschutz. Rather than deliver an exhaustive itinerary full of typical dude-ranch activities, The Ranch offers just a handful of well-executed outings: several guided horseback rides a day, scenic hikes and bikes, and fly-fishing lessons. However, guests may discover they are reluctant to leave the property for too long, lest they miss out on one of the three included chef-prepared meals offered daily. Tantalizing aromas waft from the kitchen all day, mingling with pine and crisp mountain air (the cabins sit at 8,200 feet). Freshly brewed “cowboy coffee” is served in charming tin cups on the wraparound deck each morning, and guests are provided with delicious house-made granola and cookies to pack for the trail. The pie-of-the-day and twice-weekly gourmet cookouts are both big hits. After unwinding in the evening at one of The Ranch’s hot tubs or with a perfectly-prepared cocktail and a decadent gourmet dinner, yet another treat awaits guests in their cabins: fresh Palisade-peach donut holes, part of the turndown service. The Ranch is billed as a “Broadmoor Wilderness Experience,” but this is undeniably a destination for those who enjoy the finer things in life, even when they are taking a walk on the wild side.

Olympic Training Center The first of three Olympic Training Centers to be built in the United States is located in Colorado Springs, and it is a must-see activity for those visiting the area. LATER THIS YEAR, The Broadmoor will debut a second property as part of its “Broadmoor Wilderness Experience.” Set atop Mt. Cheyenne with 360-degree views of the area, Cloud Camp is a $100 million project that includes oneand two-bedroom guest cabins, six rooms in the main lodge, and a special honeymoon cabin. Check broadmoor.com for updates.

Colorado’s Castle What’s a 15th-century Scottish castle doing twenty miles south of Denver? It’s a question that’s only asked by those who have never visited Cherokee Ranch & Castle.

T

By Laura Beausire

he story starts in 1924, when Charles Alfred (Carl) Johnson, a successful Denver real estate developer responsible for the Park Hill neighborhood, and his wife Alice decided to build a place in the country. They set the stage by purchasing the 2,380-acre Flower Homestead for five dollars an acre. The land was rugged, and featured a prominent high plateau with stunning mountain views. Denver architect Burnham F. Hoyt, who would later design Red Rocks Amphitheater and Denver’s Central Library, was commissioned to build a grand home. And that’s exactly what he did. Hewn from locally quarried rhyolite by Cornish immigrant stonemasons and emerging spectacularly from a craggy rock formation, Charlford Castle (named after the Johnsons’ sons Charles and Gifford) has 24 rooms, eight fireplaces and a picturesque array of turrets, towers, battlements and gargoyles inspired by windswept Scottish castles of the 1450s. The 17,000-square-foot Johnson family home was completed in 1926.

In 1954, the property was sold to Mildred Montague Genevieve Kimball, known as “Tweet.” A keen equestrienne with an eye to breeding Santa Gertrudis cattle, she also acquired the adjacent Blunt Ranch and renamed the entire resulting property Cherokee Ranch. Tweet played a prominent role in many Denver area organizations and was known for her impressive collection of art and antiques as well as her love for lavish entertainment (including a visit from Princess Anne in 1981). Under Tweet’s care, the property grew to over 5,500 acres, and she remained on the Ranch until her death at age 84 in 1999. Tweet had the foresight to set up a conservation easement in 1996 to protect the land, which is now a wildlife sanctuary, and today the Cherokee Ranch & Castle Foundation holds the deed to Cherokee Ranch. These days, the Colorado-flavored fairy-tale setting serves as a vibrant home for culture and education, hosting a busy schedule of tours, teas, concerts, lectures, presentations and theatrical events year-round. cherokeeranch.org
