I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A FIERCE LOVE OF FURNITURE. When given a choice between jewelry and furniture, clothes and furniture, or shoes and furniture, I always choose furniture. (Okay, sometimes shoes win.) Modern or traditional, simple or over the top, I love it all. That’s why I’m always especially excited when our annual Furniture Issue rolls around: it’s my chance to dig into current trends, track down unique pieces and, of course, find the most deliciously furnished homes to share with you. And we really hit the jackpot with the features in this issue (beginning on page 44). The designers— and brave homeowners— who envisioned these three homes held nothing back when it came to selecting bold and exciting fabrics with which to cover their furniture. And you’ll also see bold moves on display in large, graphic patterns in the wallpaper, draperies and bedding— simply fabulous. Beyond these incredible homes, we bring you a roundup of the latest furniture trends, and the pieces that show them off best (starting on page 21). And if you don’t already know about Denver’s Access Gallery, we’re excited to introduce you to director Damon McLeese and VSA Arts of Colorado, a nonprofit that works with disabled students to help them create and sell their own art (page 33). A Gallery With Heart How one nonprofit is helping young artists with disabilities find their creative passion BY HILARY MASELL OSWALD

IF YOU’VE EVER STROLLED THROUGH DENVER’S ART DISTRICT on Santa Fe the first Friday of the month, you’ve probably wandered into Access Gallery. You might have admired its captivating contemporary art, hung simply on white walls under perfectly placed lights, and assumed that it’s just another gallery in this cultural paradise. Not quite. The nonprofit gallery has a distinctive mission: to give people with disabilities the opportunity to learn about, create and display art—good art. How do they do it? We asked executive director Damon McLeese for the details on what makes Access so valuable. Damon McLeese: We started the galley itself after meeting several artists with disabilities who couldn’t get into traditional galleries, even though their work was wonderful. For example, if you’re talking about someone with schizophrenia, gallery owners might not

necessarily want to deal with an artist who is battling mental illness. So this was a place where they could—and still do—find representation. But along the way, we realized that it’s not enough to just be a gallery. We started working with kids with disabilities—physical, mental, learning, all kinds—who are transitioning from high school into the next phase of life. These young people aren’t getting jobs; they aren’t going to college. So using art, we’re teaching them job skills and helping them earn some money by creating and selling art. About two years ago, we began creating the gallery shows with our students. We had a group of 14 students who were either still in high school or just transitioning out of school. The show was called Pop Art With a

Purpose. We studied Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney. Then the young people created 20 pieces of pop art based on Lawrence Argent’s blue bear sculpture [at the Colorado Convention Center]. We have our kids work in teams, which are led by professional artists. It ties back to job skills: You can’t just work alone. You have to learn to collaborate, communicate, share ideas. The show was awesome, and we realized we were on to something. We call this our Artworks program. We always start by studying an artist or a movement with our students, and then we create a show. When pieces sell, we pay our artists commission, just like any gallery. Our goal, if people don’t already know who we are when they walk through the door, is to surprise them with great art.

Absolutely. We’ve just started making these collages based on words people give us. Students take photos of individual letters they see on signs around [the art district], and then they create original art— paintings and collages—using these words. You go to so many businesses and see the same prints from the ’70s. These works are original, they’re accessible and affordable. Historically, programs for people with disabilities are seen as very nice. ‘Isn’t it cute that they’re making art?’ But we aren’t trying to be cute or nice. We’re running an art gallery, and we’re doing necessary work. It’s transformational—for all of us. SUSAN KIELY BELIEVES IN the simple yet powerful idea of “women helping women to help themselves.” So much so that she started a nonprofit foundation that pursues that exact mission. Women With a Cause, the organization she began in 2006, teaches women around the world to sew, run their own businesses and become financially independent. Finding the inspiration to start the nonprofit came about somewhat fortuitously. Kiely, an ordained minister with a master’s degree in youth and family ministry, was planning a trip to New York City in 2005 to indulge her twin passions of theater and art. Around the same time, she received an invitation to the World Vision AIDS Day Breakfast—also in New York and coinciding with her trip.
“Maybe it was kismet, maybe it was the hand of God...but as I sat there listening, it dawned on me that working with women who have been affected by AIDS might be my life’s next chapter,” Kiely says. So she traveled to India, home to one of the world’s largest populations of HIV/AIDS victims, to explore the possibility of creating jobs for affected women to help them support their families. Not long after, Women With a Cause was born. She established two centers in the country where women make and sell items, like gorgeous, handmade silk jackets. After they complete their training (more than 800 have participated to date), these women are encouraged to form financial micro-groups to lend money to other women starting businesses.

Women With a Cause is doing good in other parts of the world, too. In Ethiopia, Kiely developed rural chicken farms, allowing families to sell eggs at village markets, and opened a computer-training center for women interested in finding government or private sector jobs. And back home in Denver, WWAC has partnered with several Colorado universities and colleges to provide education and opportunities for formerly homeless women. In addition to her work with WWAC, Kiely devotes her energy to a variety of meaningful causes—from the Junior League of Denver to the Volunteers of America, to the Alzheimer’s Association and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. “I don’t say ‘yes’ to volunteering unless I can devote the time to do it well. But I say ‘yes’ a lot,” she smiles. The causes she supports are defined by her passions—theater, art, books, family, children and, of course, women’s issues—and by her deep spiritual convictions. This generosity is inspired by her own difficult past. Raised in modest circumstances by a single mother who relocated every few months in order to find work, Kiely attended 13 different grade schools by the time she was 11 years old. Today, the philanthropist is grateful to have more stability. “I have been fortunate,” she says. “My husband [Leo Kiely, recently retired president and CEO of MillerCoors] has been very successful, and I never needed a paying job.” And so Susan Kiely devotes her time, knowledge and money to helping others. “Most of my friends are active in the community. We have fun and don’t take ourselves too seriously,” she says, “but we are not frivolous. What do you consider your greatest achievement? My children...my son and daughter. I was always afraid that I wouldn’t be a good parent because I didn’t have a good role model in my own mother. One moment she was as high as a kite and the next she would be crying. These days, she’d probably be diagnosed with bipolar disorder and could get treatment. Is there a secret to your long marriage? Oh, gosh, it has been more than 43 years! Every marriage has its ups and downs, and Leo and I have worked hard at ours. But the core of our relationship has always been respect. There is no one I respect more than my husband. He’s a person of integrity and he feels the same way about me. Your perfect Sunday. Go. It starts with church, brunch with my husband and reading the paper. On a nice day, I take the dog for a two- or three-mile walk, then I might go to the Tattered Cover and buy some books. I love to read historical novels. What is your idea of happiness? I don’t believe in happiness. I believe in peacefulness. Happiness is fleeting but peace lingers. Tell us what you like best about your home. I love color and pattern. I’m a traditionalist and my husband loves modern design—I’ve always enjoyed mixing the two together. We recently moved from a 10,000-square-foot house in Golden (where we were always entertaining) to a 2,000square-foot residence at The Four Seasons in Denver. To say that we pared down is an understatement. What is your favorite possession? Framed pictures of my grandchildren, which I have all around the house. My husband has always been very generous with gifts, and recently I’ve started giving things away, which has been very freeing. When you travel to developing countries and see how little people have, you realize that you don’t need many things.

THE YOUNG OWNERS OF THIS CLASSIC 1940s BUNGALOW quickly fell in love with Denver’s Observatory Park neighborhood, but the couple faced a challenge when they searched the area for a house that spoke to their East Coast origins. That perfect place never appeared, but they did find a solid home in the right location. Armed with a clear vision and the help of interior designer Katie Wolfe Agron of Wolfe Design House, they transformed the house into a fresh and sophisticated space with a distinct nod to their coastal aesthetic. “The house had been remodeled a few times and was a little disjointed,” Agron says. “We looked at the project and asked ourselves, ‘How can we create everything brand new and still give it that well-loved, collected look you see back East?’” Agron took a cue from older homes and laid a rich foundation by installing painted wood trim, crown moldings, wainscoting, shelves and other built-ins throughout the house. “On the living room walls, we framed out squares using wood trim to create a floor-to-ceiling graphic element,” she says. “Applying trim directly to drywall is a fast and economical way to add character. It’s like wallpaper without color.” The large-print dining room wallpaper by Clarence House is tempered with white wainscoting and crown molding. Cane backs on the Marseille dining chairs by Henredon have a vintage feel that fits the mix of old aand new. The silver soup tureen came from MK Style, Agron’s home boutique on Denver’s South Pearl Street.

Because the newlyweds had little furniture, Agron helped them curate a thoughtful mix of new pieces, antiques and antique reproductions. “There is a true appreciation for antiques on the East Coast,” the designer says. “Pulling in those pieces gives a sense of the past and makes our newer Denver houses seem richer, older and collected over time.” Traditional fabrics from venerable design houses like Brunschwig & Fils, Sister Parish Design and Schumacher, as well as antique art prints, porcelain ginger jars and silver accessories, also contribute to a sense of history. Another way to create that enviable old feel, says Agron, is to “cozy up” rooms with lots of layers. One of her favorite methods is to top both hardwood and carpeted flooring with rugs. “Persian rugs are an investment, but they can’t be ruined,” she says. “They’ve already been around for decades and a little fraying just adds character.” To keep the house looking fresh and up to date, Agron mixed in some contemporary elements. “When you mix new and old you get a much prettier layered effect,” she says. “We took really clean modern ideas and gave them a traditional presentation.” In the living room, for example, the designer paired classic upholstered and slipcovered chairs with a contemporary metal-and-glass coffee table and sleek glass lamps. She also took traditional toile to a hip, new level with a stunning, large-scale wallpaper in the dining room. The new glass chandelier sports a traditional shape, but sparkles with modern glam.

Designer Katie Wolfe Agron shares savvy tips for selecting, updating and reinventing furniture: Focus on the comfort of the people living in the house when shopping for sofas and chairs. The inside seat depth, arm width and seat height are more important dimensions than the overall size of a piece. Look for furniture that serves multiple purposes: a console that holds a TV or serves as a desk, or an ottoman that doubles as a coffee table and offers hidden storage. Use outdoor-grade fabrics for more durable upholstery and slipcovers. The selection and quality of these fabrics are rapidly improving. Restyle a sofa or chair. Your upholsterer can add or remove tufting and alter the style of the legs, skirt and arms. You might opt to lower an arm or make it square for a more modern looking and comfortable feel; switch from bun feet to tapered legs; or remove a skirt altogether to dramatically change the effect of a piece. Repurpose what you already have: Cut down the legs of a full-height table to make a coffee table; create two demilune tables from one round table; or freshen old wood furniture with new trim, hardware and a coat of paint. Add texture and pattern to a room by recovering a lampshade or switching out shades on a chandelier. Consider a bold fabric or a stately monogram, and don’t forget the trim—choices range from tailored ribbon and braid to fancy glass beads or feathers.

The color scheme also keeps the design feeling fresh. Vibrant blue—“just the happiest color there is,” Agron says—pairs handsomely with white walls and dark-stained oak floors, creating a nautical look. “White against dark looks modern because of the high contrast,” adds the designer, who also introduced pops of red in the kitchen and family room to make the rooms feel “young and happy.” The bedrooms are softer in color: warm neutrals in the master bedroom and pale pink in the nursery to welcome the new baby who arrived after the couple settled in. “The bungalow underwent a huge transformation, but it wasn’t a matter of major construction or moving walls,” Agron says. “The right furniture, trim and accessories went a long way in this house.”

WHEN YOU SPEND YOUR FORMATIVE YEARS ensconced in classically elegant surroundings, it’s bound to rub off on you. So when it came to her own space, the young owner of this home in Denver’s Cherry Creek North neighborhood drew upon her traditional design sensibility, but decided to add a youthful twist with modern-leaning furnishings and bold color. (left) “You always want your entry to set the stage for the rest of the home,” interior designer Jane Freking says, “and we decided this one needed drama.” She painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Wrought Iron, hung the homeowner’s Art Deco mirrors above an acrylic Castille bench from Allan Knight and finished the space with an oversize chandelier. A recent graduate of the Art Institute of Colorado, she was willing to be adventurous with the home’s palette and owns an envious array of original art—a recipe for a contemporary take on classic design. She recruited interior designer Jane Freking of Denver-based JF Design to help her customize the newly-built spec home, complementing its stately trim and Brazilian hardwood floors with formal but comfortable furnishings. Starting with the blank canvas of this brand-new home, the pair decided to experiment with a sophisticated rainbow of hues (rather than carrying one or two colors throughout the home), while relying on a black-and-white design scheme as the foundation. They found inspiration for this inclusive color palette in the sumptuous fabrics they chose for the space.
Traditional + Contemporary = Transitional The melding of traditional and contemporary design has resulted in a style of its own: “transitional design,” an updated take on a classic aesthetic. To get the look in this home, interior designer Jane Freking added contemporary finishes and furnishings to traditionallyappointed rooms. In the foyer, for example, Freking created a high-contrast backdrop by painting the walls in charcoal black and installing an acrylic bench from Allan Knight under a wrought-iron chandelier and the homeowner’s Art Deco mirrors. In the living room, she chose a custom coffee table with a traditional silhouette, but finished it in silver for a more contemporary look. And above the fireplace, she hung a pair of sleek silver sconces that call attention to the dentil molding in the classically-styled mantel. The home’s transitional style is a study in youthful contrasts, Freking says. “Our design scheme mixes urban chic contemporary with gracious Old-World traditional.” With the homeowner’s mix of landscape and contemporary art as a spirited backdrop, Freking surrounded the high-gloss dining table with oval-backed chairs from Artistic Frame upholstered with off-center stripes. She also hung two contemporary chandeliers, and installed an Art-Deco-inspired chrome and rosewood bar from Ralph Lauren. 55

“The homeowner loves fabrics and was really involved in selecting them, so that’s where our theme colors came from,” Freking says. “We wanted to bring crisp colors into each room. In the living room, we brought blue. In the family room, we brought red. In her bedroom, pink. We created a palette for the entire house in one fell swoop.” The dining room skews neutral, although it’s anything but bland. Freking stayed true to the black-andwhite palette and let the homeowner’s art add color to the space. Using these pieces, she composed a funky backdrop, hanging a subdued landscape next to a vibrant, large-scale portrait of John Lennon. Then she surrounded the high-gloss dining table with ovalbacked chairs from Artistic Frame that she had
upholstered with off-center stripes. She hung two contemporary chandeliers, added pom-pom trim to the Osborne & Little drapes, and installed an Art-Decoinspired chrome and rosewood bar from Ralph Lauren. Freking then carried the Lennon portrait’s vibrant blue tones into the adjoining living room, adding blue glass accessories, blue floral pillows and a custom rug from Kravet accented with big blue petals. She treated a pair of contemporary armchairs to soothing sky blue upholstery and gave them a traditional touch by outlining their contours with silver nail-head trim. In the master bedroom, the designer took inspiration from the dramatic drapery fabric, Designers Guild’s Tokyo Dahlia, and peppered hot-pink upholstery and accents throughout the room. Layers

of rosy shades on the four-poster bed and the spindle-legged bench create a feminine focal point. To modernize the room, she juxtaposed the traditional wood furniture a mirrored dresser and airy chandelier. “Most of the time, less is more, but when you have a large room and a large pattern like the one in the drapery fabric, I think it can handle more,” Freking says. “Normally as a designer you would not get people to go this far outside the box with color,” she says, “but with the client’s youth and interests, this was an exceptional job. I got to use all of these bright colors and get away with it.”

Colorado Homes & Lifestyles: You’ve been asked to design this interior not once, but twice. Tell us about each project and how the home has evolved.
Lane Oliver: The owners who built the house called me in 2005 to help freshen it up a bit—to give it sort of a mini facelift. I rearranged the furniture using existing pieces, and we bought new pillows, cushions and lampshades. None of the pieces were custom-designed, but we achieved the immediate goal of ‘sassing up’ the house. A few years later, they wanted a major transformation, including lots of bright colors, fabric and patterns, and to reuse family antiques. The goal was to create a warm, inviting home that could withstand the activities of a family with teenagers. The other goal was versatility. In the great room, for example, which is divided into three sections, the dining vignette can be situated on either end or in the middle; it’s easy to move the furniture if the family gets tired of the current arrangement. The intimate conversation area and the main living area can be reversed as well. In terms of scale, every piece of furniture fits into any section of the room. What went into pulling off that kind of transformation?
It took approximately six months as we moved from one room to the next. There was minimal construction, but every square inch of the house was repainted. We had several custom pieces made and existing pieces reupholstered. The family was only slightly inconvenienced while this was going on—except perhaps during the kitchen remodel. During the first stage of design work, the home was decorated in neutrals. Then the homeowner decided she wanted color. What inspired the palette?
The client loves the colors of painter Henri Matisse, thus the use of blues and tangerines common to the south of France. She also has an extensive collection of blue-and-white antique ceramics that provided the inspiration for different shades of blue throughout the house. You reused family antiques by repainting or reupholstering them. Give us one of your favorite examples.
There was a set of matching Jacobean chairs that were terrific but much larger than any other piece of furniture. I decided to bring some whimsy into the dining room by painting them in a high-gloss tangerine lacquer

In the kitchen, the homeowners wanted to highlight the blue-and-white delft tiles above the stove, so they traded out wood countertops for white marble and brightened the room with white-stained cabinets. New Osborne & Little slipcovers give the kitchen chairs a fresh look. (They also match the slipcovers in the dining room so chairs can be moved to either space, depending on where they’re needed.) “This room was very serious before,” says Oliver, “but now it’s bright and fun with new drapes and cheerful accessories.”

and adding a [Schumacher] fabric with an exaggerated scale. The chairs flank the fireplace perfectly. And the fabric is repeated on the sofa and the two conversation chairs to balance the space and keep the eye moving. You’ve incorporated so many different fabrics and textures, and yet they all work together beautifully. What’s your secret?
To a certain degree, mixing patterns and textures is intuitive. I know it when I see it. But here are some thoughts: You need to consider the style of the house—in this case, traditional. So I looked for patterns that might be familiar but given a new 67

twist with a larger scale. I mixed fabrics on the same piece of furniture, or used one fabric and added a kicky trim. Most of the pieces in the great room are upholstered in fabric that is echoed elsewhere in the room through pillows or slipcovers. The overall effect may appear random, but certain themes are being carried out, giving the room warmth, comfort and a sense of always having been this way.

Ask luxury-market Realtors and their clients what they think of Castle Pines Village and you’re likely to hear about “a famous round of golf,” “scenic,” and “very private.” What were never on the list were features appealing to families – but that’s starting to change now, as the enclave wrapping Jack Nicklaus-designed Castle Pines Golf Club moves into a new era, luring younger residents who are drawn to the schools and the gated expanse as a good place to raise kids.
The topography is beguiling (“There wasn’t a month my wife wouldn’t come back from a walk and thank me for moving us here,” Lee recounts); but it’s the security that families want most. “You feel comfortable letting your kids wander,” he adds. Along with the private amenities (including three pool centers); Castle Pines’ proximity gets better with each passing year: shopping and theaters at Park Meadows and in Castle Rock (a new Adventist hospital campus opens this summer). Lee compares his drive times into the Tech Center and DIA with those of Realtors and clients in central Denver neighborhoods – pretty much a wash, he says.

Delicious State Author Michele Morris shares recipes from her first cookbook, Tasting Colorado: Favorite Recipes from the Centennial State, and tells us why she thinks Colorado has one of the most exciting food scenes in the country

“I’VE COOKED ALL MY LIFE, starting with an Easy-Bake Oven,” says Michele Morris, a caterer, teacher and food writer who lives in Denver. “When I was 14, I made my mother a complete Chinese dinner for her birthday.” So when Farcountry Press approached her about writing a cookbook—an opportunity Morris had been longing for—she jumped in with both feet. Released just last month, Tasting Colorado: Favorite Recipes from the Centennial State is a compilation of mouthwatering recipes from popular chefs such as Vesta Dipping Grill’s Matt Selby, The Little Nell’s Allison Jenkins and ChoLon’s Lon Symensma. Over the course of nine months, Morris contacted chefs and hotel owners from all corners of Colorado, asked them to share recipes, then reworked each one to accommodate home cooks. “People could not have been more generous,” she says. It was a busy time in Morris’ kitchen, where she tested and reworked several recipes each day, then photographed the dishes in a “studio” in a corner of the room. (Her sister, photographer Janine Fugere, provided the stunning scenery shots scattered throughout the book.) In the end, the cookbook is a tribute to the evolution of Colorado’s restaurant scene. “I get upset when I read national food magazines and there’s no mention of Colorado restaurants. We have chefs who are incredibly innovative with ingredients, build partnerships with local producers and take the farm-to-table movement to a whole new level.”

Salmon with Artichoke, Tomato and Olive Tapenade
Sweet Potato Falafel with Lemon-Tahini Yogurt
Executive Chef Peter M. Morrison Hotel Boulderado, Boulder In 1909, in an effort to spur growth, a civic organization in Boulder sold stock to raise funds to build a first-class hotel that would attract tourists. The name chosen combined both “Boulder” and “Colorado” so that guests would never forget where they had stayed. Over 100 years later, the Hotel Boulderado still welcomes guests.
Owner and Chef Justin Cucci Root Down, Denver Root Down is one of the many great restaurants in Denver that follows a “field to fork” mentality, leaning toward organic, natural and local ingredients whenever possible. This riff on falafel is gluten-free yet packed with interesting flavors. Leftover falafel may be frozen. Yields 30 falafel
1 (15-ounce) can quartered artichoke hearts, drained 1 ⁄4 cup pitted Kalamata olives 1 ⁄4 cup pitted Manzanilla olives 3 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced 2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil leaves 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil Juice of 1⁄2 a small lemon (about 1 1⁄2 tablespoons) Salt and pepper 1 to 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 4 (6-ounce) salmon fillets
Falafel 2 pounds peeled, cooked sweet potatoes (weight after peeling) 1 tablespoon ground cumin, toasted 3 garlic cloves, chopped 1 tablespoon ground coriander, toasted 1 bunch cilantro, chopped 1 lemon, zested and juiced 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon salt Pinch cayenne pepper 1 cup chickpea flour, or more as needed 2 (15-ounce) cans chickpeas, puréed in a food processor 1 ⁄4 teaspoon pepper Grape seed or canola oil, for frying
Slice the quartered artichoke hearts lengthwise and place in a small mixing bowl. Cut the olives lengthwise into quarters and add to the bowl, along with the tomatoes, basil, 1 tablespoon olive oil and lemon juice; stir gently to combine and season with salt and pepper to taste. Season salmon fillets with salt and pepper. Heat 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and add the fillets, flesh side down. Cook until golden brown, about 3 to 5 minutes, then flip, reduce heat, and continue to cook to desired internal temperature, about 3 minutes for medium well. Serve salmon with tapenade on top. 98

Lemon-Tahini Yogurt 8 ounces organic plain yogurt 2 1⁄2 tablespoons tahini 1 ⁄2 teaspoon salt 1 lemon, zested and juiced 1 ⁄8 teaspoon pepper 1 ⁄2 teaspoon sugar
For the falafel: Combine the sweet potatoes, cumin, garlic, coriander, cilantro, lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, salt, cayenne, chickpea flour, chickpeas and pepper in a large bowl and mix well. Mash until the mixture is smooth with no lumps remaining. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Using a 1/4-cup measuring cup, scoop out even portions of the sweet potato batter and form into patties, adding more chickpea flour if the consistency seems too wet. The batter should be moist, but should not stick to your hands. Heat a 1/2-inch depth of grape seed or canola oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When a small portion of batter sizzles in the oil, the oil is sufficiently hot. Fry the falafel patties until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Serve with lemon-tahini yogurt. For the lemon-tahini yogurt: Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and stir until well mixed.

Cake 1 to 2 tablespoons ground red chili powder, mild or hot, to taste 2 cups water, divided in half 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons flour 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons cake flour (not self-rising) 2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 ⁄2 teaspoon salt 1 ⁄2 cup unsweetened, non-alkalized cocoa powder* 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into pieces and softened 1 ⁄2 cup buttermilk 2 large eggs, at room temperature Frosting 3 ⁄4 cup (1 1⁄2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 3 ⁄4 cup unsweetened, non-alkalized cocoa powder* 1 ⁄4 cup plus 2 tablespoons buttermilk 4 to 5 cups powdered sugar 2 to 3 tablespoons bourbon 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 1⁄2 cups chopped walnuts, lightly toasted (optional)
For the cake: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees with a rack in the center. Butter two 9-inch round cake pans; lightly dust the sides of the pans with flour, tap out the excess and line the bottom with circles of parchment paper. Cook the chili powder in 1 cup of the water in a medium saucepan over medium heat until simmering. Remove the pan from the heat, stir in the vanilla and set aside. Using an electric stand mixer with a wire whip attachment for best results, combine the flour, cake flour, sugar, baking soda, salt and cocoa, and beat on low speed until well mixed. Add the softened butter to the dry mixture and beat thoroughly on medium-low speed. The mixture should have a uniform grainy texture. Increase the speed to medium and gradually add the remaining 1 cup of water and the buttermilk. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Slowly add the hot water-andchili mixture to the batter and continue to beat just until well combined; be sure not to over-beat. Pour the mixture equally into the pans and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of each layer comes out clean, about 35 to 40 minutes. To cool, set the pans on a wire rack for 15 minutes, and then turn the cakes out onto the rack. Remove the parchment paper and immediately invert the cakes so that the risen tops don’t flatten. Let the layers cool completely before frosting. For the frosting: Combine the butter and cocoa in a large saucepan and melt over medium heat. Remove from the heat and stir in the buttermilk. Add the powdered sugar, a little at a time, stirring with a wire whisk between additions. Stir in the bourbon and vanilla and continue to whisk until the frosting is smooth and glossy. The frosting will stiffen as it cools, but in warm weather you may need to refrigerate it. Cool to a spreadable consistency. To assemble: If necessary, trim the tops of the cakes so that they are level. Place one of the cake layers on a 9inch round cardboard cake circle. Spread 1 cup of the frosting over the layer. Sprinkle 1 cup of the chopped walnuts evenly over the frosting. Place the second layer of cake on the frosted base. Use the remaining frosting to cover the top and sides of the cake. Press the remaining walnuts into the frosting, covering the sides and top of the cake. *Note: Cocoa powders like Hershey’s, Nestlé or Ghirardelli are non-alkalized. Do not use Dutch process cocoa in this recipe. This cake is best when made 1 to 2 days before serving, as it gives the flavors time to blend.

Putting Style to Work A smart home office gracefully combines furniture collected over the years, showing that an eclectic look works in any space

IF YOU WORK FROM HOME and want a space that is quiet but not isolated, then take a cue from Denver homeowner Josie Burke’s daily domain: a centrally located—yet blissfully enclosed—nest framed by giant glass walls. When working with Beth Armijo of Armijo Design Group to furnish the study, Burke didn’t dispatch the designer to the showrooms to buy new, coordinating pieces. Rather, she entrusted her with several items, in a variety of styles, that she already owned: an antique chandelier and funky zebra print chair she’d collected over the years, as well as a traditional chest and vintage rug given to her by family. The result is a daring mix of styles and textures, highlighted by Armijo’s favorite element: grasscloth wallpaper by Schumacher, one of the few items purchased for the room (and a growing trend this season). The wallcovering brings warmth to the space and delivers more dimension than a standard coat of paint, and a large work by artist Ben Strawn (called Conjure, from Walker Fine Art) adds a dramatic punch of color. “Everyone should make their space special, especially if you have to be in it all day,” Armijo says—and this room proves you don’t need to buy new pieces to create a distinctive look. armijodesigngroup.com
