AS THE EDITOR of this magazine, my first (and most exciting) duty is to seek out the very best—homes, furnishings, accessories, artists, trends and events—to share with you. It’s not always an easy job. As we wade through a steady stream of home submissions, product launches and press releases, we continually ask the same question: “Is it the best?” The bar was set particularly high for this issue. Named “The State of Design,” it is our annual “best of” issue, and we were determined to live up to that moniker—from asking readers to tell us their favorite people, places and things (thanks to all of you who took our online survey) to selecting our 2012 Home of the Year (thanks to all of you who shared your lovely homes with us). Curating and compiling this issue has been a monumental task, but it has also been a true labor of love for us. We hope that, in the following pages, you will be reminded of a shop or product you haven’t considered in a while, or better yet, discover some new favorites. Maybe you’ll tear out a page, visit a website or even plan to remodel that neglected room in your home. Most of all, we hope you’ll find a comfy chair—perhaps beneath the Colorado sunshine—and enjoy sharing in the things we think are the very best. Cheers,

2012 COLOR TREND: WYTHE BLUE FROM BENJAMIN MOORE

Danish design is all the rage.

NOÉ DUCHAUFOUR-LAWRANCE FIBRE TABLE

We polled top creative professionals for their takes on the latest trends influencing interior design, architecture and building in Colorado

“Clean lines, simplicity and organic craft-like forms are ruling the marketplace for contemporary design,” says Denver interior designer Jeff Elliott of Jeffrey P. Elliott Interior Design. “Danish furniture is making a comeback, but on an edgier, more modern scale.

Color takes over rooms. “Designers just keep pushing the envelope with color,” Elliott says. “And not just with accessories, but in whole rooms.” Clients who request color from Denver interior designer Elizabeth Johnson of CB Studio Interior Design are treated to vibrant painted kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities. “Adding color to cabinetry changes a space and brings in modern appeal,” she says, recommending professionally applied lacquer for a smooth, durable surface.

FORGET BEIGE—GRAY IS THE NEW NEUTRAL. “Gray is more sophisticated, fresh and clean,” Elliott says, “and I like the way it highlights other colors.” His favorites are:

Étagères make a comeback. Returning from their heyday in the ’70s and ’80s, étagères— long-legged, ornamental shelves— deliver an elegant and practical way to display accessories and add verticality to a room. This time around, manufacturers are offering a stunning array of shapes, styles and materials.

LAVATORY FAUCET BY WATERWORKS, WATERWORKS.COM

GOLD IS GLITTERING AGAIN. Interior designer Dawn Chau of Denver- and New York City-based Paradigm Interior Design notes that gold tones are reappearing in everything from hardware, lighting and accessories to fabrics and wallpaper: “Gold makes a room richer, more sophisticated and timeless.”

JUNIPER ÉTAGÈRE BY KENNETH COBONPUE, HOFFMILLER.COM

Art is always in. “The art scene in Denver is on fire,” Johnson says, citing the abundance of up-and-coming new artists as well as established galleries. “People have a passion for original artwork in their homes.” When curating your own collection, remember, as Johnson says, that “art should be something that moves or strikes you; it is such a personal thing.”

➺ ➺ Wallpaper is back— in a big way. And it’s not your grandmother’s wallpaper. “Patterns and colors are modern and updated, bigger and bolder,” Johnson says. Try papering one wall as an accent or covering a whole room for maximum impact.

SIDE TABLE BY TWENTY1FIVE, TWENTY1FIVE.COM

Small-scale makers create big soul. Artisans and craftspeople are starting their own lines of furniture, wallpaper, lighting and accessories. “Handcrafted items personalize your space and tell a story,” Chau says.

DESIGN DETAILS TAKE CENTER STAGE. “My clients are craving detail—it mixes well with clean-lined, contemporary aesthetics,” Chau says. Examples include hand-beaded furniture (pictured above) and unusual textures such as shagreen, a rawhide-like leather.

Old items have new appeal. There’s nothing like the patina and practicality of recycled goods, from reclaimed wood flooring to new solidsurface countertops made of crushed porcelain, glass and mirrors. Johnson observes her clients’ rising interest in estate sale furnishings. “I can spend far less and get really interesting furniture and accessories,” she says.

Building

Mediterranean Southwestern Western Mountain Modern

Building for the long term is top of mind. Custom homebuilder Bryan Fitzgerald of Chalet Development in Denver is building longer-term residences than in the past. “We are seeing projects approached for the life of the family rather than five to 10 years,” he says.

RENDERING BY CHALET DEVELOPMENT

ÜBER-CUSTOMIZATION MAKES FOR THE ULTIMATE DESIGN. Floor plans are becoming more personal and geared to specific family uses, such as combination formal/informal dining areas and multi-purpose mudrooms, Fitzgerald says. Jeff Kappes of national homebuilder Shea Homes agrees: “People want to express their individuality, not only in how their homes look but in how their homes live.”

Formal spaces do a disappearing act. Colorado’s informal lifestyle is reflected in homeowners’ wishes for their space. “Formal rooms are not desired in more affordably priced homes under $600,000,” Kappes says. Custom builders are experiencing a similar trend in high-end custom homes.

“I’m observing that people are building smaller, smarter spaces, eliminating rarely used showpiece features, and willing to invest in energy-saving products, such as better windows and upgraded insulation.”–Steve Luber Engineered materials prove sturdy. More man-made materials, such as engineered floor joists, are being used in the construction process. “These are strong materials that are lasting longer than their natural counterparts, and have been tested and improved upon,” says Steve Luber of Steven Luber Custom Homes. “Real wood still has its place in the home, but is better suited for a fireplace mantel than a structural beam.” THE URBAN LIFESTYLE BECKONS. “The most notable trend I see as a custom homebuilder is the wave of buyers flocking from the suburbs to city neighborhoods, where the amenities of urban life are at their fingertips,” says Luber, who builds custom homes in older Denver neighborhoods.

Spaces get smaller, smarter. There is a definite trend toward smaller homes with higher per-square-foot budgets, says E.J. Meade of ArchII in Boulder and Denver, in which “every space is exceptionally thought out and detailed.” Architect Kyle Webb of K.H. Webb Architects in Vail notes that clients are willing to be more compact with their designs, not building more than they need. “It allows us to be more creative with how we put a house together and how spaces interact,” he says.

ARCHITECTURE: ARCH11; PHOTO: RAUL GARCIA

CONNECTING TO THE OUTDOORS IS A GIVEN IN COLORADO. “We continually strive to connect our nature-loving clients to the outdoors,” says architect Jodie Shike Wright of One Architects in Telluride. Architects use a variety of techniques, including fully retractable glass doors and a continuation of flooring, wall and ceiling materials, to blur the lines from indoors to out.

SITE TRUMPS STYLE. Adhering to specific styles is becoming less and less important, while craft, the quality of materials and authenticity are being prioritized, Meade says. “We’ve had great conversations with clients about how choosing a style precludes an authentic response to a building site.”

AN ORGANIC APPROACH IS NEVER OUTDATED. “As architects, we see a trend toward natural materials and handmade items,” Webb says. With the abundance of beetle-kill pine in Colorado, look for interesting applications in cabinetry, furniture, flooring, columns and structural supports.

Homeowners are asking for “ageless” dwellings. Baby boomers want houses that accommodate aging—and are discreet in doing so. Obstacle-free, accessible design is a good fit with minimalist sensibilities, Meade says. “It means fewer doors, more interconnected spaces—including eliminating thresholds between inside and out. In all, more modern.”

Homes expand and contract. “We’re breaking down the massing of the mountain house, creating homes that fill out and contract gracefully,” Wright says. Thoughtful planning creates homes that accommodate large numbers of guests with spaces that can be closed up when the house is occupied by the owners alone.

“The important trend in green design and building is that it has become the norm—people are asking for it. They want to save energy and be efficient.” —Kyle Webb

The kitchen is ever more the “heart of the home.” Kitchens are becoming more integrated into living spaces and expanding in function, according to Meade. Not only is the space used for prepping food, but it has become the central gathering, eating, office, homework and project room.

HOME OF THE

YEAR

At Home in

EDEN In the midst of verdant gardens, this contemporary home springs up from the land—and then shows off an eclectic collection of modern furnishings. You might just call it paradise; we call it our 2012 Home of the Year

(opposite) To emphasize the relationship between the interiors and the outdoors, architect Chris Davis brought materials used outside into the home, like the boardform concrete wall that stretches into the entry foyer. The painting, Tulip Accumulation 2004, is by Robert Kushner, represented by DC Moore Gallery, New York. (right) The design team created this exquisite outdoor room to guide guests to the home’s entry. Landscape designer Martin Mosko selected black slate tile for the pool surfaces because it acts like a mirror. “As you’re looking at the water, you see the architecture reflected everywhere—the sky and the home united in the reflection.”

53

It’s a design lover’s fairytale: (above) Architect Chris Davis selected board-form concrete for the home’s few vertical elements “to anchor the architecture,” he says. A color additive deepened the concrete’s gray hue, likening it to the natural grays in the garden’s rock formations. (opposite) Tradition meets mid-century modern in the home’s interiors, designed by Richard Lee. A perfect example: A 17th-century English fireplace, which Lee found in an auction catalogue and purchased as the home’s first piece, stands against a cement wall in the living room.

54

Once upon a time, the home on this lush three-acre site in Castle Pines was the indifferent stepsister to its beautifully cultivated gardens. With help from Martin Mosko of Boulder-based Marpa Landscape Design Studio, the owners had spent years tending to the landscape—but their home didn’t live up to its setting. One day, they decided to remedy that problem. But like all good stories, this one had a twist. There is a full-story drop in the site’s grade, which meant that visitors would have to walk down to the front door—not exactly the most inviting way to approach a home. Enter the magic-makers: architects from Denver-based Semple Brown Design, Sarah Brown and Chris Davis (who is now a principal at BOSS Architecture in Denver). “The first goal was to flip the house around so that the home’s public spaces had a relationship to this amazing site,” Davis says. The 12,000-square-foot design relocated the living spaces to the bottom floor and moved the bedrooms upstairs. Initially, the architects considered putting the entry at the upper level and allowing visitors to descend to the main level inside the house, but the owners had their own vision for the space. “They wanted guests to arrive and experience the outdoors from the very first moment,” Brown says. “They had a very sharp sense of this space. We listened.”

The living room is an offering to 20th-century design gods, with a few tributes to Europe’s Renaissance. The carpet is a rare 17th-century flat-weave tapestry rug from New York rug dealer Doris Leslie Blau, Lee’s go-to source. He topped it with Italian pink fireside chairs from the 1950s; a Jean-Michel Frank table (in the foreground) from DeLorenzo Gallery in New York; a mid-century chair covered in tangerine mohair; and an Art-Deco cast-glass screen to refract Colorado’s abundant sunshine.

54

“We wanted the architecture to be ambient, like a museum’s. The owners have a collection of amazing period pieces they’ve collected over the years. We couldn’t let the architecture compete.” —Chris Davis

(above) Bamboo cabinets in the contemporary kitchen are both durable and good-looking. The oak table and chairs come from early20th-century English furniture maker Robert Thompson—aka “Mouseman” (see sidebar on page 61). (right) “We tried to blur the distinction between interior and exterior spaces,” Davis says, so much of the home’s main level opens to the outdoors. This patio meets the edge of the expansive gardens. (opposite) Lee skipped the traditional long, formal dining table and opted for two smaller round tables to promote intimate conversation among smaller groups. He painted the walls soft pink and discovered the sexy Venetian chandeliers at Objets Plus in New York. (They hung in the owners’ Manhattan apartment before moving to Colorado.) The fabric for the curtains comes from Clarence House.

58

So Davis, Mosko and New York-based interior designer Richard Lee created an outdoor entry room that guides guests to the front door or, at the final turn, out to the gardens. The team created an eight-foot water wall beside a stairway that descends through a grove of chanticleer pear trees. A glass railing and floating stone steps “give you the feeling of being suspended as you descend,” Mosko says. The “floor” of the outdoor room is a shallow water pool, cut by a stone bridge. “You descend [through the outdoor room] in a very sculptural way,” Davis says. “It feels like an experience, a procession to the front door.” The pathway alters direction frequently to give visitors new sensory experiences, Mosko says: “It changes what you’re seeing as you walk.”

57

(above) Lee divided the large master bedroom into a sleeping space and sitting space for the owners’ morning ritual of sipping coffee and reading the newspaper. Because the tufted leather headboard and bed linens are white, Lee upholstered the chairs in a bold animal print. (opposite) The minimalist master bath fixtures are from Waterworks in Denver.

60

Not surprisingly, the home’s contemporary design is an attractive complement to the landscape. “We wanted the architecture to relate to the site and grow out of it,” Davis says. He chose a palette of natural materials: board-form concrete for the home’s vertical elements, cedar (for its durability in the hot Colorado sun) and cementicious stucco (rather than a synthetic version). What’s more, “we wanted the architecture to be ambient, like a museum’s,” Davis adds. “[The owners] have a collection of amazing period pieces they’ve collected over the years. We couldn’t let the architecture compete.” Many of the furnishings come from early-to-mid-20th-century modern design icons, including Jean-Michel Frank and André Sornay. Against a textured background of neutral materials—floors of stone

Two-Minute Design History The owners’ handsome collection of 20th-century furnishings celebrates some of the finest European designers of the last century. Here’s a quick tutorial on the names behind the designs: André Sornay The French designer inherited his father’s furniture business in 1919 and revolutionized it, kicking classical forms to the curb and creating modern furniture that married art and architecture. He loved geometric shapes, pleasing proportions and clear functionality. Mouseman Furniture Englishman Robert Thompson flourished in the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century. Legend says he once claimed to be “poor as a church mouse” and would surreptitiously carve a mouse into each piece of furniture he made. His descendants still run his business in the UK. Jean-Michel Frank Often characterized as a minimalist, the French interior designer was in fact an early proponent of mixing styles—glitter and glam paired with clean lines and surprising materials. While teaching a course at the famous Ecole Parsons à Paris in the ’30s, Frank gave his students an assignment: design a table so basic that it would retain its integrity whether elaborately finished or left unvarnished. The result, known as the Parsons table, has been replicated by high-brow design houses and mass-production furniture stores ever since. Jules LeLeu Another Frenchman, LeLeu thrived in the modernist movement, following—and influencing—the trajectory of design from Art Nouveau’s decorative style to Art Deco’s sleek look. He was a stickler for luxurious details—like mother-ofpearl, ivory and exotic woods—and top-notch craftsmanship.

or oak, walls of cement or stucco, clean-lined, steel Hope’s Windows—the pieces stand out beautifully. “The interiors have a lovely layered look,” Lee says. “I love using really fine objects against these materials; it’s about the contrast, about Art Deco sconces in a house that’s built in the early 21st century. You wouldn’t expect it, but somehow, it works.” And so we come to the moral of this story, and all tales of exquisite design: “Good things,” says Lee, “well made things, just go together”—happily ever after.

62

(above) The ceremony house—or tea house— stands beside a pond in the shape of the Japanese character for “heart.” “No matter where you stand, you can’t see all of the water,” Mosko says, “which makes the space seem very large.” The walls of the tea house are removable, enhancing the connection to the gardens and pond. (opposite) The “Shrine of the Western Paradise” is built of all-natural materials: clay and sand found on-site and straw bought from a local farmer. The only exception is the stained glass windows, created by a local artist.

New Space, Old Soul With refined finishes, classic furnishings and plenty of shine, interior designer Beth Armijo brings panache to a newly constructed condo outside Denver BY ELISABETH A. SULLIVAN

PHOTOGRAPHY

BY

KIMBERLY GAVIN

CH&L: What did the homeowners want to do with this space?

Beth Armijo: They live in Wyoming and wanted a place to be near their daughter here in Denver—a low-maintenance city apartment. They have a more traditional style, so we mixed a classic feel with the condo’s modern bones. Mixing traditional furniture with Miami-modern fireplace mantels, like you did here, takes guts.

That wall [which features a double-sided fireplace] was really just drywall with a caststone mantel, and it was driving the homeowners crazy because it was nothing special. We wanted to dress it up, so we looked around for some cool wall coverings and they fell in love with a capiz-shell Maya Romanoff paper. It’s literally almost like tile. A lot of the finishes in this home have a definite sheen to them. The dining room chairs even seem to amplify the sunlight.

The owners love shine and crystal. The chandelier over the dining table was brought from their home in Wyoming and it took us three days to install piece by piece. I think it exemplifies their style. It’s traditional with a little glitter. They’re typically drawn to heavier pieces, and it was fun to push them out of their comfort zone a little bit and lighten it up while still keeping the look classic. The design is very open and airy.

(opposite) Maya Romanoff’s Mother of Pearl wallcovering adorns the freestanding fireplace wall and the recessed squares in the coffered ceiling, lending the room an ethereal glow. A custom velvet ottoman with nailhead trim by Fred Lucci Upholstery in Denver serves as additional seating for entertaining. The crystals on the mantel are from HW Home. (above) Armijo balanced the homeowners’ traditional area rug with clean-lined furniture and subtle but sumptuous upholstery. “We used a lot of yummy fabrics with texture and depth to keep the room more tactile and soft,” she says. A modern coffee table by Michael Berman and a Murano glass table lamp by Bella Figura add visual interest to the space. 65

You’re right that it is quite airy, but some of the furniture is heavier. Then there’s the touch of glitz, yet the space isn’t too girly. How did you strike that balance?

It’s the masculine-feminine mix at work. The glitter and lightness are on the feminine side; then we grounded the look with heavier pieces. We needed larger pieces like the custom-made dining table because the volume of the space is so big. We didn’t want to clutter it up with stuff, so what we did choose needed to have the right scale. Did you design the coffered ceiling?

Yes, it’s an architectural feature that the space really needed. Inside each square, we inset the same Maya Romanoff crushed-shell paper that complements the mantel. This is where the design impacts the decorating. Getting the architectural envelope right sets the stage for what you put in it. Installing that coffered ceiling tied it together with the mantel and unified a space that had been pretty bare.

66

A custom dining table by Artifacts, coupled with a Swarovski crystal chandelier and a large-scale mirror, grounds the voluminous dining area. “The mirror over the mantel reflects light, the console piece [pictured left] is mirrored, and the fabric on the dining room chairs is a metallic gold thread, so the light just plays throughout the room,” Armijo says.

67

Building Character

How did you warm up the palette?

Some of the homeowners’ light fixtures contained gold elements and others had silver, and it’s not against the rules to use the two together. Today we’re seeing people mix finishes. So that was why we chose the drapery fabric, which is gold with a silvery stripe. It’s the mix that keeps it warm and cozy. Beyond the palette, the modern coffee table [in the living area] mixed with the classic lines of the other furniture also helps create a continuous balance, so the design is more timeless. There are other modern touches, such as the dining room mirror and the kitchen pendants. Were the homeowners slow to embrace those pieces, or did they like them immediately?

I think they instinctively liked them. They wouldn’t have bought this condo if they didn’t like some of the contemporary elements. The look is contemporary with a little bit of a ‘glammy’ feel and that’s what resonates with them. They don’t like cold modern, not chrome and black. They like crystal-glam modern. This space must be beautiful at night.

Oh, yes, it is. It’s pretty in the daytime because you have the view, but at night, you’re suspended in the sky.

(opposite) Gold- and silverpleated pillows and watercolor paintings in silver frames carry the home’s palette into the tranquil master bedroom. (left) A trio of modern pendants complements the classic lines of the upholstered stools by Artistic Frame. “The flooring throughout the home is a creamy porcelain tile that we ordered from Spain,” Armijo says. “It really reflects all of the sunlight to help brighten the space.”

Spaces that are newly constructed can feel devoid of personality, but rather than wait for the passage of time to instill character, you can also add depth with the help of architectural touches. Before you buy new furnishings, consider your finishes. Install a coffered ceiling, or line one room with wood paneling. Add wainscoting or classic molding. “A welldesigned architectural space lends itself to looking good no matter what chair you put in it,” designer Beth Armijo says. “Design the walls, the floors, the lights, all of those things first, and then think about items like your table. It creates a backdrop that’s so much more finished than just plain drywall.”

Country GETS FRESH European styling, soft colors and artful details bring warmth and intimacy to a thoughtfully scaled home

BY ELIZA CROSS

PHOTOGRAPHY

BY

DAVID PATTERSON

AFTER LIVING IN A TRADITIONAL MOUNTAIN HOME with dark wood and rustic furnishings, homeowners Michael Burgamy and Char Sloan-Burgamy were ready to lighten up. The couple turned to architect Sears Barrett to help them create a new custom home on a parcel of land near Parker. “We wanted a home that was unique and elegant, yet comfortable and welcoming,” Char says, “and we spent a lot of time talking with Sears about how we would live in the space.” The architect adds, “Through our discussions we began to envision a home with a French country aesthetic that followed the European tradition of elegant detailing,” Barrett says. The couple also wanted their home to be a comfortable place where their grandchildren could stay and play. Barrett’s design for the 7,200-square-foot, five-bedroom house fosters an open flow between the living and dining rooms and the generous kitchen. “We placed the master suite on the main level, so Michael and Char have everything they need on one floor when it’s just the two of them at home,” he says. Guest rooms—including a cozy bunkroom for the grandkids—are located on the upper level, and the lower floor serves as the entertainment area with a family room, built-in bar, wine cellar and access to the back patio. (opposite) Vaulted ceilings, abundant windows and soft butter yellow walls create a living room that is spacious and elegant, but still intimate and comfortable. The custom Candella chandelier is from Galleria Lighting and the painting on the mantle, Madeleine O’Connell’s The Chase, is from 9th Avenue Collection in Denver.

71

Model Scale

In an architect’s vocabulary, “volume” refers to the aboveground area within a building’s shell, and getting the proportions just right can make all the difference as to whether the space feels intimate or cavernous. Architect Sears Barrett offers tips for creating the right balance: Roof Restraint In lieu of soaring interior elevations, Barrett specified “in between” heights of 14 to 15 feet for the rooms with vaulted ceilings. “I’ve learned over the years that two-story rooms can diminish a sense of comfort,” he explains. Dormer View To temper the scale of the house, the bedrooms are nested in hipped dormers within the roof. “The lower roofline makes the building feel more compact,” Barrett says. Flexible Floorplan “We created a variety of different spaces and ceiling styles within the home,” Barrett says. “Some rooms are more cozy and intimate, and others are larger and more formal. That way, the homeowners can migrate to the areas that suit their activities.” Living Level Barrett’s design places all of the couple’s primary living spaces on the main floor. “Everything is nearby and connected by a central hallway,” he says. “The house is very comfortable for two, but when guests visit they can expand up or down.”

Designer Greg Comstock chose a fresh color palette for the home’s interiors. The overall effect is polished and understated with a variety of textures, unique materials and punches of contrasting color. “Char isn’t afraid to be bold, and we even matched a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes for the red accents and backs of the bookcases in the library,” he says. The open living area on the main floor blends traditional and contemporary styling. “The living room has a restrained, European influence with an urban edge,” Comstock says. “We wanted to strike a balance between 72

(this page) The cozy library features a color palette of soft greens with bright red accents, including Lexington’s Newbury game chair. The plaid drapes are made of Kravet fabric, and the custom refectory desk is topped by a Bradburn table lamp. patterns and solids, varying heights and widths, and contrasting but harmonious textiles, woods and metals.” Against a backdrop of pale butter yellow walls, he gracefully mixed classically-styled furnishings, a custom Davis and Davis rug, and an elegant curved stone fireplace surround with a modern Candella metal chandelier. He had a Paul Ferrante iron cocktail table fitted with a glass top to keep the space open and airy. Comstock retained some of the homeowners’ existing furniture, and then chose new furnishings and accessories with care. “We wanted each piece to be unique and able to stand on its own,” he says. “Although we brought in many new pieces, we wanted to create a collected look that seemed like it had naturally evolved over time.” To help visually balance the dominant fireplace in the living room, he

commissioned a custom chest and stand through MacRae Designs that looks like a vintage antique. He found authentic French café barstools for the kitchen, which were shipped from Paris. In the kitchen nook, he had new cushions sewn for a set of dining chairs the Burgamys already owned and placed them around a new table from Hickory Chair. The color scheme for the master suite is a soothing array of quiet greens and creams. “Char wanted the bedroom to be restful, soft and romantic, so we intentionally limited the color palette and added interest with different fabric textures, from the quilted Matelassé headboard to the tufted ottoman with fringed trim,” Comstock says. Patterned drapes help draw the eye to the windows, and mirrored chandeliers and nickelplated wall sconces add sparkling accents of silver.

76

(opposite) The elegant master suite is defined by soft fabrics, contrasting textures and a neutral color scheme of cream and fern green. An upholstered Kravet bed is anchored by a Woodward bench from Hickory Chair, and two Currey & Company chandeliers hang overhead. (above) The soothing design flows into the master bathroom, where Comstock covered walls with F. Schumacher wallpaper in a willow leaf motif. The crystal chandelier is by Visual Comfort. (right, top) To unify the guest bathroom, the red backsplash trim tile from Decorative Materials was also used to frame a pair of beveled mirrors. The gold-framed painting is Two Dancers Resting by Degas. (right, bottom) A wall of tiny iridescent tiles adds glamour to the powder room. The oval pivot mirror is illuminated by two sconces from Wilmette Lighting.

DESIGN DETAILS

The designer also collaborated closely with Barrett to execute the home’s elaborate arches, moldings, millwork, cabinetry and trim. To give the rooms character, the architect created vaulted ceilings in a variety of shapes and added trim treatments, including a graceful curved barrel vault in the master bedroom. Adds Comstock, “We purposely thickened, framed and paneled the doorways to give them a solid feeling.” The true test of a home’s design, though, is its day-to-day livability. “Michael and I utilize every bit of this space,” Char says. “Each of the individual areas has a specific mood and function, and yet the whole house works in unison.”

‘Boulder bubble’... With a supply limited by Mother Nature and demand spiked by well-heeled out-of-state buyers, Boulder homeowners are seeing appreciation despite the national market For a refresher in Economics 101, just take a look at what home buyers and their agents are seeing inside Boulder this summer: The scenic town arrayed below the Flatiron promontories has a supply side limited both by Mother Nature and by public decree; and a demand side that’s looking almost boundless as the market around Denver gains speed. Who wants to live in Boulder? Practically everybody, says veteran Coldwell Banker Previews Agent Scott Franklund: thousands of graduates who have spent four years in sublime surroundings at the University of

Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall, where the venerable counterculture meets a newer, well-heeled resident drawn by the lifestyle.

Clairiere d’art

Colorado Homes & Lifestyles is once again proud to be the media sponsor of the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. This year we asked our booth designers, Scott and Annie Huston of Columbine Design, to create a vignette inspired by the work of a CCAF artist. See how beautifully they met the challenge.

The inspiration: Effie by Arabella Tattershall, Arabella’s Statements in Metal, Lafayette Booth #203 COLORADOHOMESMAG.COM

“Clairiere

means ‘clearing’ or ‘glade’ in French,” explains Annie Huston about the design for CH&L’s 2012 Cherry Creek Arts Festival booth, called Clairiere d’art and symbolizing a private clearing in the wood in which a fairy rests amidst the natural beauty. “The sound of the word is feminine, both grammatically and phonetically, and sensual, representing a woman’s touch.” Annie, who co-owns Denver-based landscape design firm Columbine Design with her husband Scott Huston, turned CH&L’s 10-by-20-foot tent at the 2011 festival into a lush oasis and also welcomed this year’s challenge: Create a vignette inspired by a single work by an artist featured at the festival. The Hustons fell in love with a sculpture by Colorado metal artist Arabella Tattershall called Effie—their fairy. “The feminine lines of the

piece, contrasted by the raw materials used to create it, reminded us of a natural landscape anywhere in the world,” Annie says. To help the Hustons bring the fantasy clairiere to life, Kent Frick and his staff at Denver’s Sheptons Antiques invited her to round out the vignette with pieces from his showroom. “The antique pieces accentuate the feeling of a bygone era,” explains Annie, “as well as the repetition of nature’s cycle, in which organic elements are repurposed into the soil. In the same way, the antique salt crushers, columns and bells [from Sheptons], which represent various woodsy elements, are given new life here.” The finished design is a vale for Effie (and a welcome oasis for festivalgoers). “She will rest in the spaces created for her—surrounded by the marshes, prairie and woods—for as long as she needs.”

The Plan

Annie Huston turned a 10-by-20foot event booth into a lush garden. Want to transform your outdoor space? Take cues from Annie:

Shade-loving annuals, such as upright fuchsias and double impatiens, were planted among a variety of ornamental grasses. “Pink Crystals ruby grass and Mexican feather grass represent the meadow where our maiden runs,” Annie says.

Pick a Theme Inspired by Arabella Tattershall’s sculpture, Effie, Annie envisioned a fanciful woodland meadow where the fair maiden could rest.

Shop for Your Theme Annie turned to Tagawa Gardens for ornamental grasses, shadeloving flowers and woodland plants that reinforce the theme of a clearing in the forest.

Consider the Unexpected Vintage and antique pieces from Sheptons Antiques, which Huston reinterpreted as planters, trees and marshes, are pleasant surprises. “The vignette displays a series of contrasts, including young plants alongside old, stately elements,” she says.

2

GREGORY BANKS

Two circa-1930 teak pillars, painted green and mounted on carved stone bases, anchor the vignette and represent trees. Orange cosmos play against the weathered paint of the pillars “as if they were rays of sunshine peeking through the trees,” Annie says.

Woodland plants like ferns, kinnikinnick and sedum added lush, cool color to the vignette.

{

KENT FRICK, OWNER of Sheptons Antiques in Denver, worked with Annie to select vintage and antique pieces that work with the theme of the vignette. “We have such a variety of unusual items, and it’s always exciting to see how people use them in new ways,” he says. Frick specializes in Indian and Indonesian teak pieces (he travels to India once a year and has a brother who lives in Bali), and Annie selected many of his faraway finds to become planters, water vessels and symbols of woodland life.

Made in the mid-twentieth century out of jackfruit wood, a salt crusher from Java, Indonesia, was formerly clad with metal and used like a large rolling pin to crush rock salt.

Hand-carved out of solid teak, these painted pillars originate from India, circa 1900.

Annie repurposed this weathered-teak hanging bell from Bali, circa 1940, as a planter.

A small rice storage box from the early 1900s took on a new role as a “downed tree.”

This rustic mid-century teak piece once served as a work bench.

Annie filled Indonesian iron cooking pots, circa 1920, with water and aquatic plants to represent marshes.

Originally used to store rice, this open jackfruit-wood box from the mid-1900s became a one-of-a-kind planter.

Jet-powered Prayer Historian and CU Denver history professor Tom “Mr. Colorado” Noel calls the style of the US Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel in the Springs “Space-age Gothic.” Designed by Walter A. Netsch, Jr., and completed in 1962, this all-faiths house of worship—and its 17 stainedglass-accented spires—induces spiritual flights of fancy. usafa.af.mil Walls Gone Wild For many who behold Bauhaus designer Herbert Bayer’s Articulated Wall from Interstate 25, the work calls to mind a teetering stack of French fries. But the inspiration for the deconstructed 85-foothigh wall that anchors the Denver Design District is actually a sculpture built for the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. denverdesign.com Snakes Alive I. M. Pei and Partners, the firm that designed the Louvre’s famed glass pyramid, took cues from the skin of a Colorado rattlesnake to create the diamond-patterned granite that paves the 13 original blocks of downtown Denver’s 16th Street Mall. 16thstreetmalldenver.com Still in Style Denver’s Clyfford Still Museum is a suite of skylit volumes assembled to display the approximately 2,400 works of the abstract expressionist. While the backstory is surprising—Still has virtually no connection to Colorado or Denver—the structure is a dramatic addition to the cultural center known as the Golden Triangle. clyffordstillmuseum.org

Mid-Mod Masterpiece Denver’s own abstract master, Vance Kirkland, purchased a home on Capitol Hill in 1932, where he crafted hundreds of paintings in his own abstract method and collected decorative art by other Colorado artists. Upon his death in 1981, the creative treasure trove passed to Hugh A. Grant, a family friend, who has since doubled the size of both the home and the collections to create what is now the Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art. kirklandmuseum.org All Aboard Since Union Station’s 1920s heyday, when 80 trains chugged through daily, locomotion at Denver’s once-grand transportation hub has slowed to two lonely Amtrak trains per day. But the Union Station Alliance now has the go-ahead from RTD to refashion the landmark—without touching its original Beaux Arts-style exterior—into a 130-room hotel, packed with restaurants and retail space. denverunionstation.org Coal Miner’s Castle Redstone Castle, sheathed in paneling from Arts and Crafts master-designer Gustav Stickley and filled with fancy fixtures from Louis Comfort Tiffany, was once the home of turn-of-the-last-century industrialist John Cleveland Osgood. Nestled in the quaint mountain town of Redstone (just outside of Aspen), the castle has hosted such notable guests as John D. Rockefeller and Teddy Roosevelt. redstonecastle.us Old-Fashioned Entertainment Before the advent of radio and TV, the Chautauqua Movement reigned—12,000 facilities nationwide that hosted lecturers, artists and entertainers in outdoor settings. Boulder’s Colorado Chautauqua, with cottages, dining and entertainment facilities at the base of the Flatirons, still draws headliners like it’s 1898. chautauqua.com Rags to Riches If you saw her on the deck of the Titanic and hollered, “Molly!” she wouldn’t answer. Mrs. Brown’s first name, after all, was Maggie. Portrayed as an outlandish character by Debbie Reynolds in the 1964 film musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown, the real woman was a Denver aristocrat and do-gooder, raising money for indigent girls and coal miners. To learn about Maggie, visit her restored Victorian home— the Molly Brown House Museum—on Capitol Hill. mollybrown.org

Streams of Consciousness After years of controversy, Christo has federal permission to build Over the River, in which the artist will drape 5.9 miles of silvery fabric above the Arkansas River in eight different segments from Cañon City to Salida. Installation begins in early 2013; the exhibition is planned for August 2015. overtheriverinfo.com —Patrick Soran
