MY HUSBAND AND I are now fully entrenched in house hunting. While some people find this activity stressful, I absolutely love touring homes and seeing how other people furnish and live in a space (perhaps that’s why I’m so fond of my job). We knew when we sold our last house that this next one would be much smaller, so I gave away lots of furniture—pieces that had seen better days and those I knew wouldn’t fit into our new, scaled-back lifestyle. And since the Goodwill truck was already parked in our driveway, I also took the opportunity to hand off a few pieces that were perfectly fine, but that I just didn’t like. We’ve all made a regretful furniture purchase, right? Enter my dining room chairs. I had found the perfect dining table (which I still love) and, a little impulsively, bought chairs made of woven water hyacinth to go with it. They were a pretty, but safe, choice; soon I found myself wishing those chairs were just a bit bolder. So onto the truck they went, and now I’m excited for the chance to replace them. Which brings me to this, our annual furniture issue. While compiling this year’s furniture report (page 23), I spoke with a number of designers who attended the most recent High Point Market. I was delighted to learn that after a long reign of gray and beige, color is slowly returning to furniture—in fun accessories like pillows, lamps and small side tables and chairs, and even in some of those bigger investment pieces. Regardless of your taste in furniture, you’ll find an ensemble in our featured homes to love: the furnishings in a Cherry Hills home (page 72) are soft and serene, while a Cordillera vacation home (page 56) incorporates subtle color and pattern. In contrast, the bold, no-holdsbarred palette of a Denver home (page 64) shows how fearless color choices can really make a statement. As I search for my perfect dining chairs, Pantone’s color of the year, Tangerine Tango, lingers in my mind. Now, furniture in that hue would certainly be a bold choice.

Local furniture experts share their favorite findings from the most recent High Point Market
On a High Note BY MARY BARTHELME ABEL
IF YOU’VE PURCHASED HOME FURNISHINGS FROM A LOCAL SHOWROOM, chances are good they were first showcased at High Point Market, held every spring and fall in High Point, North Carolina. It’s the home design industry’s Fashion Week, where manufacturers reveal their wares to the designers and showroom owners who will share the new styles with design lovers countrywide. We spoke with three Colorado furniture gurus who regularly attend High Point to get a sneak preview of what we’ll see in showrooms come spring. The big news: after years of neutrals, color is coming back! Keep reading to find out what else is on trend with furniture this year.
Ron Werner
Co-founder and President, HW Home hwhome.com With three retail showrooms in the Denver metro area and one on Boulder’s Pearl Street, Ron Werner has plenty of space to fill with new pieces. A veteran market-goer, Werner says he felt an excitement at this past fall’s show that had been missing in recent years. “For the first time in three years, we’re seeing some really exciting ideas and products. It’s as if the industry is coming back to life.” HW Home is known for its thoughtful mix of classic pieces and unique accessories, and Werner is especially excited about the latest offerings from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. “I love the Barrington line of case goods. It has a clean, European style.” The showroom will also be the only Colorado dealer of Ralph Lauren’s sleek, mid-century modern-inspired line called Lauren Ralph Lauren.

Hoff Boers, who, along with co-owner Darlene Miller Thomas, has attended virtually every market over the past 25 years, has seen trends come and go—and return again. “Historically, when the world is in turmoil, people want their homes to be clean, orderly and calm,” she says, which explains the popularity of beige over the past few years. The most recent market’s displays, however, reflected a change. “We still saw neutrals, but with small pops of color. There was also a touch of glamour, showing a shift— consumers are becoming just a little bolder.” Larger investment pieces in Hoff Miller’s Denver Design District showroom are still upholstered in subtle, natural tones (like creamy linen), but blue and purple velvet pillows from Aviva Stanoff and fun, bold Kenneth Cobonpue chairs hint at this shift toward more daring design. Tip: Don’t forget to look up when you visit the Hoff Miller showroom; you’ll be dazzled by the latest in lighting, including ultra-contemporary “Cloud” pendants from Hive.

Susan Ferrari
Vice President, Retail, Slifer Designs sliferdesigns.com If you haven’t yet heard (or visited), Vail-based Slifer Designs recently opened a retail showroom in Denver’s Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Ferrari, who travels to High Point in search of pieces to fill the floor, says she also noticed the trend away from a neutral palette. “This was the first market in a long time where we’ve started to see color again.” Ferrari was excited to see such bold hues as persimmon, fuchsia and peacock blue in accessories, artwork and pillows. She also detected an early trend back to more traditional silhouettes. “We’ve seen clean lines for years, though that’s just beginning to shift; I think we’ll see even more traditional shapes next year.” She points to designers such as Barclay Butera and Lillian August, who are showing camelback sofas and chairs with rolled arms, as well as Baker’s Milling Road Collection (see these new offerings at Slifer Designs in Edwards or Denver this spring).

Vacation rental clubs let you stay in expensive homes without all the worries of home ownership—no wonder they’re so popular. And lucky for Coloradans, four of these companies are based right here in our own backyard. BY CHERYL MEYERS
Founded 10 years ago, Exclusive Resorts is Colorado’s original destination club, with 3,500 members and 400 mountain, beach, golf and city properties worldwide. Destinations include Sea Island, Ga., Jackson Hole, Wyo., Costa Rica, Vail and Paris (to name a few). Membership opens the door to all of the club’s properties. HOW TO JOIN Similar to a country club, members pay an initiation fee ($110,000 to $500,000), plus annual dues ($10,000 to $60,000), depending on the level of membership (between 10 and 60 vacation days per year). Bonus: Members who pay for a “full” membership can expect a 75 percent refund on the front-end fee if they choose to leave the club. THE GIST
MEMBER PERKS Most of the homes were designed and built by Exclusive Resorts to meet the club’s desired specifications (read: large kitchens, luxury finishes and open floor plans), promising consistency among the properties. Also, most of the homes are built adjacent to luxury resorts and hotels where the club has negotiated access to amenities such as swimming pools, beach clubs and gyms. PERFECT FOR Well-to-do world travelers looking to take luxury trips with family and friends (homes typically sleep six to 10 people) and wanting personalized support (members are assigned to a membership service manager). Founded by the creators of Exclusive Resorts, this club is a hybrid of a rental club and a traditional destination club. Members pay a onetime fee to join, plus annual dues. That buys deeply discounted (up to 80 percent off ) nightly rates at an extensive portfolio of five-star properties in locales such as Santa Barbara, Utah, Las Vegas, Tuscany, Maui and even Kenya. Rather than own the properties, the club controls them under a long-term lease, which keeps the initiation fee low. HOW TO JOIN Members pay a $15,000 initiation fee, plus $2,500 in annual dues. Add to that a nightly rental fee whenever they stay at a property. MEMBER PERKS Members can travel to the properties as often or as little as they want; there are no regulations or rules about number of days they can stay, nor are there blackout periods during holidays or peak times. Getaways also come with complimentary concierge service and access to nearby resort amenities. PERFECT FOR Those looking for a mid-priced destination club that offers many of the benefits found at more expensive clubs, plus plenty of flexibility. This high-end rental company requires no membership fee to stay at its privately owned vacation properties. These luxury homes, which average $9 million in value and offer about four bedrooms each, are located at five-star resort destinations (including the Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons) in Vail, Beaver Creek, Hawaii, Mexico and the Bahamas—with homes in Napa Valley and Italy coming soon. HOW TO JOIN Clients simply pay a nightly rate—which ranges between $1,500 and $10,000 depending on the location and season—rather than a membership fee, to stay at the properties. Reservation requests can be submitted through the club’s website. MEMBER PERKS The rental fee includes access to a local concierge who will vet and arrange meals with private chefs, spa treatments, ski lessons, deep-sea fishing excursions and other luxury services. Also included is discounted private-jet pricing via Jet Linx (JetLinx.com), and since Cuvée owns most of the homes it rents, the properties feature high-end, locally inspired décor, flatware and linens. PERFECT FOR The jetsetter looking for ultra-luxury rental accommodations, minus the fees, contracts and commitment associated with traditional destination clubs. Three individual clubs make up the Quintess Collection, each tailored to a different kind of traveler. Quintess, a traditional destination club, offers access to multimillion-dollar homes that generally sleep larger groups. The destination club Duo offers smaller luxury homes and condos for couples, empty-nesters and those who don’t want to travel in groups. And Tour, a golf club, delivers access to residences at high-end resorts and private clubs around the country. This collection of five-star homes spans destinations like New York City, Amelia Island, Fla., Nantucket and Aspen, to name a few. HOW TO JOIN The initiation fee with Quintess runs about $180,000, with an additional $1,425 per night in dues. This buys as many as 21 nights with access to travel during the holidays (which is divided among members via lottery). It also gains access to the Duo and Tour residences. To join Duo, members pay a $90,000 initiation fee, plus $825 in dues per number of nights. Tour members pay $20,000 for membership, plus $6,000 in annual dues. MEMBER PERKS Membership includes complimentary travel planning, daily housekeeping and private club access at each of the destinations. Also, members can take advantage of the “Beyond” program: For a surcharge, they can sign up for all-inclusive trips to exotic or seasonal destinations where the club does not own homes (think Kenya or the Galapagos Islands). Jamie Angelich Philanthropist and Excelsior Youth Center’s 2012 Triumphant Woman
BY ELIZA CROSS PHOTOGRAPHY BY DON RILEY
WITH SO MANY NONPROFIT organizations in need, Denver philanthropist Jamie Angelich has a trusted method for deciding where to invest her time, energy and support: “I tend to choose charities and causes that I have a personal connection to,” Angelich says. She’s had a long involvement with Children’s Hospital because her son Adam was treated there twice before he turned two. A past president of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, she now serves on the organization’s national board of directors, all because a family member has the disease. She cared for her ailing mother for years prior to her death, so volunteering for organizations like Bessie’s Hope and Volunteers of America’s Meals on Wheels comes naturally to Angelich. “I’ve always had a heart for helping the elderly,” she says. And so it’s no wonder that Denver-based Excelsior Youth Center—a residential treatment program that nurtures troubled girls between the ages of 11 and 18, some of whom have suffered abuse—named Angelich its 2012 Triumphant Woman. Her own personal draw to the organization, however, might surprise some: Angelich, herself, experienced a difficult childhood.

WE WERE JUST WONDERING... How do you manage your busy social calendar? Our family made a choice long ago not to be gone on weeknights, and we try not to go out on two consecutive weekend nights. Sometimes that means we have to miss important events, but family always comes first and the truth is, we enjoy our home life, too. You’ve attended countless charity galas; tell us about an especially memorable event. This is going to sound a little crazy, but years ago we were at a ball for Children’s Hospital and one of the guests brought in a bunch of rolls of aluminum foil. Before long we were all out on the dance floor, wrapping big swaths of aluminum foil around each other! Describe a perfect Saturday morning. We’d sleep in, cook waffles and bacon for breakfast, and enjoy a lazy morning drinking coffee, reading the paper and doing the Jumbles puzzles. Oh, and I’d stay in my robe until noon. That’s a luxury for me, because I’m from Texas where women never leave the house without makeup and earrings. What makes a great dinner party? We love to have friends for dinner, and if we’re gathering in the kitchen or outdoors I might cook something casual like pasta. For more formal parties in the dining room, I usually hire a caterer. Since I plan the seating arrangement in advance, I like to use place cards— and I always put the most talkative person in the middle of the table. To encourage conversation, I sometimes write questions inside the cards for each person to answer. Can you give us an example of one of these ice-breakers? One of the best questions is, ‘Tell us something about you that no one else knows.’ Each guest writes his or her response on a piece of paper. Then we read the answers aloud, and you have to guess who wrote them. It’s so much fun, and you hear some great stories. What’s one thing about you that might surprise people? I love to shoot pistols. I have my concealed weapons permit, and I really enjoy target shooting. I’m very competitive, and I’m a good shot. In fact, I’m asking for an AR-15 [semi-automatic rifle] for my birthday!

“If you see the family portraits of me, my brother and sisters from our childhood, everything looks sweet and perfect on the outside,” she explains. “But behind closed doors, we were dealing with serious dysfunction and abuse.” Her work with Excelsior Youth Center as well as Kempe Foundation—a child abuse prevention organization for which Jamie serves on the board— has been cathartic. “I forgave my parents long ago,” she says. “But my sisters and brother and I stand as advocates against abuse, and the four of us are testaments to the power of breaking the cycle.” Angelich is deeply devoted to her own family—her husband of 22 years, Alan, and their son, now a college student. Their spacious, sunny Greenwood Village home is at once elegant and inviting, with comfortable furnishings accented by splashes of color. “I like a lot of personal touches, from our family photos and handmade accessories to the art we’ve collected over the years,” she says. “We love to have people over and entertain, and I think a home reflects the warmth and graciousness of its owners.” An avid golfer and tennis player, Angelich favors knitting needles and yarn during Colorado’s colder months. “Knitting is my winter sport,” she says. “It relaxes me.” Year round, and with the help of her numerous community ties, Angelich enjoys another, more meaningful, sport of sorts: introducing people and fostering new connections. She’s introduced a number of job candidates to employers, and six of the couples she matched are now married. “People tell me I could be a professional matchmaker,” she laughs. “I just get a kick out of connecting people.”

Cabin in the City A thoughtfully crafted restaurant in Denver enchants with woodsy elements and whimsical flourishes BY CAROLINE EBERLY
An Urban Escape The interior design of Beatrice & Woodsley—a Denver hotspot that serves rustic American fare and top-notch wine, but is perhaps best loved for its dramatic décor—is rooted in an imaginative story. Restaurateur Kevin Delk admits the vision arrived somewhat unexpectedly: he came across the space he would transform into a fanciful urban oasis while hunting for a spot to open a pizzeria. “The dropped ceilings were falling in, there was carpet everywhere and a couple of pieces of plaster were missing from the walls,” he says. But behind a peeling piece of plaster, he encountered a patch of beautifully handcrafted, original lath-and-plaster wall. The muse visited. “I wanted to play off the idea of stumbling across an old cabin in the woods that’s built with such care and conviction that it’s still standing.” Also drawing inspiration from D.H. Lawrence’s poem, “Things Men Have Made,” which speaks of enduring handcraftsmanship, Delk brought this nostalgic idea of woodland discovery into the modern city with Beatrice & Woodsley, which is all about “the notion of escape from day-to-day life.”

The Forest for the Trees “Without a doubt the aspens are my favorite element,” Delk says, who rescued the gorgeous trees, destined for an excelsior mill, from land slated for development in southwest Colorado. Now a showstopping, floor-to-ceiling element in the space, the trees define the décor, which Delk describes as “1900s urban sophistication meets rustic Colorado mountain style.” They also help bring Delk’s original vision to life, especially in the morning, when the light streams through the amber-tinted front windows. “It’s like waking to a warm, beautiful morning when camping in the woods.” For Delk and his wife, scouting the furnishings and finishes was half the enjoyment of creating the space, and the two turned to unconventional sources. “We’ve seen more sawmills, antique stores and small-engine repair shops than two city dwellers deserve, some of which are the most unique places imaginable.”

One should cultivate the qualities and characteristics that speak, or even whisper, to you.
Before beginning to collect furnishings for the restaurant, Delk wrote a short “script” for the space—a couple of paragraphs about how he imagined the environment. Good design is like film, he says. “I had a vision of these characters and this place in time, down to the smallest details—what the lighting would be like, or how things would smell.” Once this “aesthetic budget” was in place, Delk began curating the right mix of furnishings, which, for him, is a process of discovery involving a bit of serendipity and patience. “I don’t actually go out and look for anything. I usually wait for whatever it is I’m looking for to present itself.” He recommends avoiding the “off-the-shelf” path to furnishing a space, instead to simply keep your eyes open for the right piece. “The key is being in touch with who you are and what you appreciate in life.”

Rustic Redefined In a Vail Valley ski lodge, shapely furnishings upholstered in fun, fresh fabrics transcend typical mountain chalet style BY JAMIE SIEBRASE PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIMBERLY GAVIN
HOMEOWNER GEORGIA BAKER, A FORT WORTH NATIVE with a keen eye for style and an inviting Texas drawl, had a new kind of ski lodge in mind when she and her husband, Charles, purchased their Vail Valley retreat. “I was looking for something light and modern, yet sophisticated,” she says, so she recruited interior designer Beth Armijo of Denver-based Armijo Design Group to create a fresh look to contrast with the home’s natural wood and stone construction. Playing with scale, proportion and bold pattern, Armijo abandoned predictable rustic décor in favor of a clean, transitional look anchored by solid furnishings made modern with fresh fabrics.
Elegant Living
Take a Load Off
“There is color, but it isn’t saturated,” says Armijo of the living room (opposite). Crisp patterns and soothing earth tones create interest without sacrificing sophistication. The designer used patterns in unexpected places, such as the updated plaid fabric on the backs of the Manor Wing Chairs by Baker. “Although the pattern is bold, the subtle colors—grey, yellow—are timeless,” Armijo says. The curvy Hancock & Moore sofa, made youthful by Schumacher silk in soft taupe and leather tweed, contrasts with the clean-cut edges of the Kravet cocktail table; two simple upholstered stools provide extra seating. A wool area rug with a tone-on-tone diamond pattern softens oak floors and completes the room.
Armijo specifically designed the cream-and-beige-striped bench for the walk-out basement, which creates a dramatic entry to the home’s lower level (above). Although the designer couldn’t change the scale of the house, she could influence the space through furniture tailored to the space. “Custom design gives you the power to make the furniture the focal point,” she explains. Framed English garden blueprints surround the bench. “We wanted to fill the wall and create a strong presence to fit the tall ceilings.” An old lacquered faux bois table completes the vignette and adds a touch of mountain rustic. “The juxtaposition of a rustic, organic element next to such a clean and tailored bench is exciting,” Armijo says.

Gathering Places Since this is a vacation home, where extended family and close friends gather for holidays and special occasions, both homeowner and designer agreed that it was important to create several conversation niches, such as the small round table that’s tucked into a corner just a few steps from the front door (above, left). Surrounded by upholstered arm chairs, “it’s a nice, quiet place to play games or check your email,” says Armijo. The dining room (opposite) is formal yet comfortable and features a showstopping Emanuel Morez Matawi chandelier made entirely of hand-blown glass leaves. It’s a sophisticated riff on the type of natureinspired fixture you might expect in a lodge-style home and works masterfully here: the leaves add a natural element that pairs beautifully with the not-so-dressy Piedmont table from Hickory Chair. “Mixing woods is important,” says Armijo of the eclectic dining set. “Wood should go together, but it shouldn’t match.” For further interest, Armijo chose pieces in various textures and scales, pairing masculine leather (on the heavier Delaware host chairs) and feminine fabric (on the delicate armless Chelsea side chairs) to balance the ensemble.
No Muss, No Fuss The kitchen (above, right), part of an open floor plan that makes the main level perfect for entertaining, is Georgia Baker’s favorite space. “It’s just so functional,” she says. To complement the fixed finishes already in place—the artistic backsplash, maple cabinets and granite countertops—Armijo chose lowmaintenance saddle barstools with crocodile vinyl seats, which she says is a “very cool, very clean [design].” Tailored nail-heads add interest; backless seats are in accord with the open layout.
59
Classic Comfort The den (above, left) is a casual gathering place, perfect for small gettogethers. The furniture in this room was chosen for its functionality, and informal lounge pieces like the Baker sofa offer a relaxed look. Supple fabrics—chenille, velvet and leather—beg to be touched, while round silhouettes, most apparent in the Charles Hassock ottoman, add to the softness. Floor-to-ceiling draperies in bold stripes add visual height to the dropped ceiling.
Sitting Pretty “This is my favorite small space,” Baker says of the library (right, and above, right), where she tends to perch on Hickory Chair’s Argonne sofa with her morning coffee and watch deer roam across snow-covered trails. The petite sofa is the perfect size for the quaint nook, but the upholstery treatment, which pieces together different fabrics in complementary colors, gives the piece big style. One more dining/game table can be found in the light-filled basement (opposite). “It’s not so much a basement as it is an extension of the house,” says Armijo. South-facing windows keep the space warm and light, while soft but graphic linen, cotton and velvet keep the look fresh and cohesive.
60
62
All Tucked In Armijo is a big fan of fabric headboards for their texture and color, which are sometimes lacking in traditional frames. In the only guest room with twin beds (above, right), she took advantage of the room’s tall ceilings with tall, graphic headboards. “Rooms with twin beds are so much fun to design,” says Armijo. “It’s like you have a mini-vignette built right in.” In the master bedroom (above, left), she opted for Hickory Chair’s Chelsea headboard. Its plush curves contrast with the blunt edges and strong texture of the Murano chests. Armijo prefers chests over nightstands because they ground the room and add symmetry. Extra storage is a bonus. Then, in the designer’s signature way, she played with scale and pattern, choosing oversized table lamps from Visual Comfort to fit the tall space. To round out the generous layout, Armijo added a seating area (opposite) with cozy chairs in a modern floral print, contemporary floor lamps and formal drapes. Perhaps it was Armijo and Baker’s symbiotic relationship that led to the successful outcome. “I’m so thrilled with the result,” says Baker. “Beth’s youthful eye and talent brought everything together perfectly.”

lighten up Fresh color, updated fabrics
and strategic space planning help redefine a traditional home BY NANCY RICHMAN MILLIGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY DON RILEY
REDECORATING THIS DENVER HOME STARTED LIKE MANY SUCH PROJECTS—a little at a time. It began when the homeowners asked interior designer Lane Oliver to bring in some new furniture and create a better space plan for their family room. “Afterward,” says the award-winning designer and owner of LEO Interior Design, “the client told me, ‘Wow, I didn’t know we could rearrange the room this way. It’s changed the way we live. What can we do to change other rooms?’’’ So Oliver got to work on the whole home. The spacious Tuscan-style residence features authentic architectural details: archways, wood beams, stonework and rich wood stains. “But everything was heavy and dark,” she says. “Our goal was to transform it into a lighter, brighter, more tranquil area. It’s all about the color, fabric and space planning.”
(left) This Tuscan-style home features authentic European details: stucco-and-stone walls, red tile roofs, heavy wood beams and ornate ironwork. (opposite) The curves of two tufted Stanford pub chairs from Whitney Evans, Ltd. and a Vanguard settee from Objets, Ltd. work with the modern lines of the homeowners’ original Noguchi coffee table. Designer Lane Oliver brought in the oversized pieces to balance two pianos in the spacious living room/parlor. An Ironies chandelier from Kneedler-Fauchère adds to the contemporary-traditional mix and relates to the latticepatterned carpet.
65
Lighter paint colors throughout brighten up the walls, while punches of bold color ground the rooms— golden yellow in the breakfast room, green in the living room and red accents in the kitchen and entry hall niche. “Each space took on its own story based on what the clients needed,” Oliver says. In the master bedroom, for instance, they asked for a calm atmosphere. True to request, the suite is awash in neutral colors— pale taupe and cream with hints of lavender. “We were trying to achieve some serenity,” Oliver explains. The designer used much of the homeowners’ existing furniture, but painted and refashioned traditional pieces to make them more fanciful. “It’s all about the fabric and how it is applied,” says Oliver, who loves to mix prints and use contrasting welting for interest. For the master bedroom, she reupholstered an Art Deco bench with a contemporary flower print, transforming it from heavy and traditional to light and ethereal. Dining room chairs were treated to slipcovers, “to bring in something lighter and more flowing to contrast with the hardness of the stone walls,” Oliver says. Tangerine leopard-print fabric takes a wing chair in the dining room from stuffy to show-stopping.
Color Cues
Designer Lane Oliver shares how to use one of her favorite decorating tools: color.
✣ Use fabric, rugs and paint to help color flow throughout the house.
✣ Use similar values and tones,
if not the exact colors, to carry the palette.
✣ Paint accent walls, such as niches, to create special, intimate spaces.
✣ Add color to the ceiling to make a
space more warm and welcoming.
✣ Don’t judge painted walls too
soon: bold colors require three coats of paint, and the color needs about two weeks to mellow. Plus, painted rooms need furnishings to absorb the color—fabrics, rugs and furniture make a big difference.
66
(above) Bright red paint and large-scale floral draperies add drama and welcome guests to the entry hall niche. Subtle green paint and a rustic plaid fabric update a once-dark settee. “The homeowners had a lot of serious furniture. We introduced some whimsy,” Oliver says. The designer also placed smaller pieces into niches so that large-scale furnishings wouldn’t overwhelm them.
In her signature way, Oliver introduced color and fabrics into the new dining space. She softened stone walls and hardwoods with carpeting and draperies, and injected color with orange chests from Grange and fresh fabrics from Cowtan & Tout and Brunschwig & Fils. “We took a heavy room and made it more cottage-like, Oliver says. The painting is by Denver artist Joyce Coco.
(above) The kitchen got a high-impact redo with a few simple changes. The newly lightened walls are balanced with a pop of bright red paint and an eye-catching valance in the window niche, as well as Stanford oak counter stools upholstered in Pindler & Pindler fabric. (opposite, top) “We used bright Tuscan colors in the breakfast room to blend in with the fireplace wall and nearby kitchen,” Oliver says. She repeated red upholstery on the Kravet dining chairs and added taller Charles Pollock armchairs from Egg & Dart, Ltd. in the sitting area to balance the high-backed banquette bench. The designer finished red draperies and armchairs with contrasting gold fabric trim. (opposite, bottom) A large-scale Osborne & Little printed fabric from The Shanahan Collection finishes the kitchen window. “It looks like a piece of artwork,” Oliver says. Custom floral designs from Objets, Ltd. feature wood blocks with manzanita branches and moss.
68
New furnishings were introduced as well—whimsical overscale pub chairs and a tufted settee add fun to the living room; bright red bar stools and dining chairs enliven the kitchen and breakfast nook; and sleek light fixtures sparkle in every room. “Contemporary lines add some fun and a feeling of ‘now,’” Oliver says. “We took heavy pieces and remade them to reflect what’s going on in 2012.” Responding to the homeowners’ lifestyle, the designer also rearranged rooms: she swapped the living and dining spaces, creating a welcoming living room/parlor right off the entry, and delegated the less frequently used formal dining room to a space farther into the house. 69
(above) Although more serene in color, the master bedroom relates to the rest of the house through its dark wood ceiling beams and stained French doors. A customized CR Currin bed from Chuck Wells & Associates introduces contemporary lines and finishes to the traditional four-poster style. The homeowners’ rustic chest was treated to a silvery-taupe painted finish and the Art Deco bench was reupholstered in a fresh, floral print. The chandelier and floor lamp are from C.A.I. Designs. (opposite) Just off the master bedroom, Oliver created a private sitting room and office. She customized a Barclay Butera chaise and ordered a Drexel Heritage desk from Denver’s Columbine Showroom in a silvery green that picks up the colors of the fabrics. The window-lined room is framed with soft draperies trimmed with beading for a touch of sparkle.

DESIGN DETAILS
An exercise area off the master bedroom became a lovely sitting room and office. “We established more conversation areas,” Oliver says of her space-planning strategy. “Every room has multi-functional spaces to relax, talk and gather.”With its intriguing mix of contemporary and traditional elements, the house is not only more refined and sophisticated, but it lives more comfortably. “The clients didn’t even know this was possible,” Oliver says. “That they could keep their house and existing furniture and make it into something they love.”

High Style Neutrals In a Cherry Hills home, famed Southern designer Phoebe Howard proves that a neutral palette can be anything but boring
BY SALLY STICH
The living room furniture—two Hickory Chair sofas, two skirted chairs and two fireside chairs by Lee Industries—was chosen for its deep seats and classic lines. Though the room is not a perfect square, the furniture is arranged symmetrically to enhance conversation. “I don’t believe in overhead lighting,” says interior designer Phoebe Howard, so floor and table lamps create pools of light.

INTERIOR DESIGNER PHOEBE HOWARD’S PROFESSIONAL NAME, Mrs. Howard, conjures images of dowager designers: Sister Parish, Dorothy Draper, Elsie de Wolfe. But the Florida-based design maven is far from dowdy; this hip, self-taught designer’s first project landed a 12-page spread in House Beautiful. That was 14 years ago, around the time she and her husband Jim opened two retail stores—Mrs. Howard and Max and Company—in Jacksonville, Fla. They now have stores in Atlanta, Charlotte and Jacksonville Beach, and Howard continues to refashion interiors with her signature “neutral classic” style. Here, she talks about one such transformation. 73

CH&L: What was the genesis of this project?
Original anchors the space.
Phoebe Howard: I’d worked with this couple before, and when they moved from Washington, D.C., to Cherry Hills, they asked me to design their home’s interior. Though the exterior is stone and timber, the couple did not want an obvious mountain vernacular—the gorgeous views cover that design element. Their existing furniture simply did not work in this space, so picking the right furnishings was a large part of the project.

The furniture we chose is clean-lined. Classic but modern. Above all, it is comfortable and covered in natural fabrics—linen, silk, leather. The client liked the idea of using neutrals, so everything is covered in solid colors that are subtly related. The sofas in the living room are upholstered in oatmeal-colored linen, the chairs facing the fireplace a blue-gray linen, the ottomans a cream-colored leather. Even though the house is quite large, none of the furniture is oversized, and each conversational space is defined by an area rug.

“
The key to creating elegance—especially when the color palette is so neutral—is variety in shape and size, all balanced for the space the furnishings occupy.
”
—Designer Phoebe Howard
The look is very elegant, wouldn’t you say?
Elegance is in the fabrics and details. You’ll notice that throughout the house, some chairs have skirts, some do not. Some have angular arms, others have curved ones. The key to creating elegance—especially when the color palette is so neutral—is variety in shape and size, all balanced for the space the furnishings occupy. Also, in every room, the furniture arrangements are symmetrical, even though some of the rooms themselves have curved walls. How do accessories play in?
Accessories make or break a room. I tend to remove things and keep only what’s necessary so the room doesn’t look overthought. In the living room, for example, Kudu horns on Lucite boxes add height to a narrow mantle and provide the perfect frame to the piece of modern art. Teardrop table lamps juxtapose thin brass floor lamps.
A soft taupe color scheme defines the family room, where two comfy chairs covered in a lively geometric print called Rex Linen add a pop of interest. The room displays Howard’s trifecta of great design: architectural details, antiques and just the right amount of accessories. The sculpture on the side table is James Dixon’s Tondo; Kazu Oba’s Utsuwa sits atop the coffee table.
77
(above) “I always design the master bedroom around the woman,” Howard says. “I want her to look beautiful there.” The room has an air of sophisticated simplicity: an upholstered bed is dressed with an ivory coverlet, a white down comforter and blue pillows, all from the designer’s retail store, Mrs. Howard. (opposite) In a sitting area with an exposed-stone wall off the master bedroom, a creamy cowhide rug defines the area that contains a wing-backed chair, a curved sofa and a Hickory Chair “Egg” ottoman—the latter two pieces echoing the curved wall. A piece of modern art, Jason Lucas’ Redemption, adds edginess to an otherwise serene space. Lucas is represented by Walker Fine Art in Denver.
Though the home’s color palette is low-key, the design is high-impact. How did you pull that off?
You can hide a lot of design mistakes behind bold colors, but when the color palette isn’t edgy, the home must have good architectural details and great accessories that are thoughtfully chosen. I actually removed some of the existing crown molding in places where it was just too much. Then the furniture is classic and comfy. In the end, this house is like a beautiful cashmere sweater. It looks great—and it feels even better.

A historic mining town with lots of soul (and a refreshing paucity of snobbery), Breckenridge dishes up bona fide hospitality
For sweet sips
CARL SCOFIELD
For a lift to the spirit Spring Fever, Breck’s second annual spring bacchanal, invades town from mid March to April 15th, the official end of this year’s ski season. Warm sunshine mixed with copious powder days make for a monthlong party in praise of the good life. Look out for free weekend concerts at the base of Peak 8, sidewalk sales, restaurant specials and exuberant kids’ activities over Easter weekend. breckenridge.com
ZAK HIMMELMAN
FOR A FULL DAY
For a cozy place TO hunker down The Speakeasy, an intimate movie theater in the basement of a 1910 schoolhouse, also boasts its claim as the highest-elevation movie cinema in North America. The venue plays first-run movies—film buffs, take note—on real 35-millimeter film. Flicks rotate each week and range from Hollywood to indie and foreign. 103 South Harris Street. speakeasymovies.com
STAY Just two blocks from Main Street, the Fireside Inn turns on the Victorian charm: Housed in an 1870 Victorian, furnished for comfort and run by British husband-and-wife owners Andy and Niki Harris, this four-room B&B and five-room, dormitorystyle hostel is a Breck fixture. firesideinn.com SHOP Breckenridge has no shortage of hip boutiques filled with clothes accentuating Colorado’s slippery distinction between active wear and elegance. Especially worth checking out: The Fall Line for high-end casual, and Magical Scraps for handmade children’s clothes. thefalllinestores.com, magicalscraps.com SAVOR Relish prides itself on Colorado-inspired cuisine crafted by intrepid chef Matt Fackler, who infuses his menu with local game, produce and cheese. From the restaurant’s second-story perch, get a bird’seye view of town, join some of Breck’s colorful characters at the bar for a microbrew, and appreciate Fackler’s unique riff on Western standards. relishbreckenridge.com
No doubt Breck has its share of brewpubs and designer beers, but two lesser-known gems offer sinful alternatives: neighboring sister boutiques Ridge Street Wine and Breckenridge Cheese & Chocolate, the brilliant ideas of husband-andwife partners Anne Dowling, a certified sommelier, and Ken Buck. Start at Breckenridge Cheese & Chocolate for a diverse selection of wines by the glass, artisan cheeses and small-batch chocolates —and a convivial place to sit and swish—then head next door to Ridge Street Wine to snatch your favorite vintage for home or hotel. breckwineandcheese.com
For a righteous start If you’re looking for scrumptious but healthy fare to get you going, stop by Amazing Grace, a casual breakfast and lunch spot in a funky old Victorian. Founded by Monique Merrill, one of the country’s top adventure athletes, Amazing Grace is a standby for locals and visitors alike. The B.O.B. (Basic Organic Breakfast) fuels whatever adventure you have in store, and the restaurant’s addictive vegan chocolate chip cookies will put an extra zip in your step. 213 Lincoln Ave. amazinggracebreck.com

Buy the best. The easiest way to make furniture last longer is to buy the highest quality you can afford. “Pieces made of solid wood with screwed and glued construction from manufacturers with a good reputation are going to be heritage pieces,” says Brent Simon, owner of Colorado Style Home Furnishings. True grit. “Think of dust as very fine sandpaper; it can ruin your finish,” says Mike Ackerman, owner of Ackerman and Sons Furniture Workshop. Dust furnishings frequently with a barely damp cotton cloth such as an old T-shirt. Keepin’ it clean. The dust that can hurt your wood finish isn’t doing any favors for your upholstery either. “Vacuum your furniture every time you vacuum the rest of the room,” says Ackerman.

Good oils. Once in a while your furniture’s wood needs a good oiling. Kate Sultan, co-owner of Modern Bungalow, recommends a light lemon or orange oil. Just apply liberally with a soft cloth, let it set for a few hours and then wipe away any excess. Avoid polishes with silicone; Ackerman recommends Guardsman Furniture Polish. Moisturize. “If your lips feel dry, your furniture probably feels dry too,” says Simon. In Colorado’s low humidity, furniture can easily dry out to the point of cracking. The solution? Add a humidifier to your heating and cooling system or put a small humidifier in the room. Made in the shade. Sunlight can fade fabrics and darken woods, says Simon. Keep pieces out of direct daylight if possible, and draw draperies as often as practical. Reorganize accessories frequently to avoid fade spots. Flip and rotate cushions to distribute wear and tear. Even rearrange the room periodically to even out your furniture’s exposure to light. Thrills and spills. If you spill something on your upholstery, blot it up immediately; don’t let it set and don’t rub it in. And then have it professionally cleaned. Age-defying skin. “Leather is skin,” says Sultan, “and just like your skin it needs moisturizing.” Every month or two you should condition leather with something like Liberon Leather Cream or Leather Tech Conditioner. Ease joint pain. When furniture falls apart, it happens at the joints, Ackerman says. Can’t you just hear your grandmother telling you not to lean back in her dining room chairs? Well, don’t push furniture across the floor, either; lift it to move it. If a chair or table develops a wobbly leg or arm, have it professionally repaired right away. It’s less expensive to fix a wobble than to rebuild a break. Too hot to handle. If a bowl or pot is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your wood. “Hot pots create burn rings,” says Sultan. Use a trivet or let the bowl cool down. —Patrick Soran
