WINDOWS WITH A GREENER OUTLOOK. DESIGNED FOR A MORE BEAUTIFUL FUTURE.
FROM OUR FOREST TO YOUR HOME At Sierra Pacific, we manage our forestland with the future in mind. We plant more than we harvest. Over the next 100 years, we will triple the amount of wood growing in our forests, which will protect our wildlife, help fight global warming and improve the view as we all look to the future. We’re proud that our products carry the seal of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. Our windows are made from sustainably-grown wood and manufactured in America.

HORSES AND OTHER THOUGHTS
I’VE REMODELED A FEW houses in my day, and I can testify that it can be difficult, overwhelming and more than a little inconvenient. Most memorable to me is a project involving a charming little home built around 1910. It had all the character you could hope for: original hardwood floors, fully functioning radiators and lots of wallpaper. (Not the vinylbacked paper of today that comes off easily. Real wallpaper.) Layers of it, throughout the whole house, and even on the bedroom ceilings. It took almost a year, dozens of wallpaperremoval products and more than a few upperbody aches before those walls bore buttery yellow paint. In this issue, our first of a brand-new year, we celebrate a little truth I’ve learned in the process: that the joys of remodeling are worth the pains. The homes on the following pages are incredible transformations: a Boulder midcentury ranch restored to its original glory; an Aspen home that went from 1980s boring to 21st-century sleek; and a vacation home in Crested Butte that’s reimagined in soft neutrals, with design updates to make it perfect for large family gatherings. We’re also unveiling another bold do-over (cue drum roll): the stunning results of our From Messy to Marvelous closet makeover contest! Winners Janet and Peter Brophy of Greenwood Village received a $25,000 remodel of their large but poorly designed master closet, overhauled by Closet Factory Colorado, Ashley Campbell and Robert Koelbel Homes—as well as many others. We’re grateful to all who chipped in to make the space stylish, well organized and downright dreamy (turn to page 35 to see for yourself). If you’re considering a renovation project of your own, trust me on this: When you see all your hard work transformed into a beautiful home—your home—you’ll think it wonderfully satisfying. Happy New Year,
Jill Soukup

The Goods We took counsel from the color experts to get the pulse on the 2012 palette, then scouted home furnishings and accessories in the year’s freshest hues
Wythe Blue HC-143 Benjamin Moore
Color Your Home Current BY CAROLINE EBERLY
Tried-and-True Blue “We find a cooling of the palette as we move into 2012,” says Sonu Mathew, senior interior designer with Benjamin Moore, “which reflects a sense of calm inside our homes and environments.” And so blue—a calming, comfortable color family, and a longtime crowd favorite—will move to the forefront. (Wythe Blue—a “softer, more livable blue with a modern edge”—takes the stage as Benjamin Moore’s color of the year.) In a home, blue pairs beautifully with a variety of wood tones, whites and grays, as well as other shades of blue for a layered effect. Also fitting for the times is the way the hue, as a cooler color, affects our experience of a room by rendering it more spacious. “If you come back to the idea of the economy and people scaling down, it’s interesting that blue opens things up.” (clockwise, from top left) Windy Chair in Highland Leather by Montis $2,475, Alesso Modern Source, Denver, (720) 379-4672, alessomodernsource.com New Traditional Cocktail Table and Arm Chair by Century Furniture To the trade, Century Designer Showroom, Denver Design District, (303) 282-5000, centuryfurniture.com Chandra Area Rug by Thomas Paul $2,495, Watson & Co., Denver, (303) 777-8087, watsonandco.com Three Oven Cooker in Pistachio by Aga $16,290, installed; Thurston Kitchen & Bath, Boulder, (303) 449-4001, thurstonkitchenandbath.com

“
If you’re just starting out with introducing color to your home, you have to think very seriously about proportion and placement of color.

Perk up with Persimmon Copper, pumpkin, persimmon—whatever you want to call that vibrant rusted orange hue—is all the rage in 2012. As a warmer color, it balances those cooling blues because, after all, colors only make sense to us within a spectrum, Mathew explains. “You have to vary color so it doesn’t get boring. So we’re seeing fun injections of color like persimmon that warm up the palette.” The spicy and provocative shade of orange will pair easily with cool gray for a combination that feels oh-so modern. On the flipside, the hue can just as easily swing retro. “In a nod to the 70s, it will work with brown as well,” says Michelle Lamb, internationally known color forecaster and editorial director of The Trend Curve. “That’s going to have legs—oh my gosh, that’s going to do well.” (clockwise, from top left) Moroccan Dessert Plate by Jayson Home $18, (800) 472-1885, jaysonhome.com Altamura Armchair by Casamidy $950, casamidy.com London Bridge Fabric in Fire by Schumacher To the trade, Schumacher, Denver Design District, (303) 733-2591, fschumacher.com Martini Side Table in Persimmon by West Elm $129, West Elm, Denver, (303) 320-1001, westelm.com 24

What’s Your Color Confidence? The color gurus share small-but-stylish ways to play with color, plus a few ideas for seriously punching up your home’s palette.
If you prefer white walls and neutral furnishings... Opt for just a touch of color. “Try painting the inside of cabinets and bookshelves or niches so you get a peek of color,” Mathew recommends. “It’s important that you feel secure in your environment when using color.”
Go bold in a smaller space—like a powder room, foyer or guest room. “Any area that’s a little more contained, where you could close off the space,” Mathew says. You’ll experience the color, but not be overwhelmed by it.
If you like splashes of color throughout your home...
Create colorful vignettes. “Celebrate a trend in your home by displaying some of your favorite accessories in a grouping that reflects the ways colors are being combined,” architectural color consultant KD Fikso says. Mix vases in different shades of blue, or chargers and plates in interesting color pairings. Paint a piece of furniture. “Maybe it’s a painted chair that sits in the office area of your kitchen,” Fikso says, or a period piece that’s brought up-to-date with an unconventional hue. Add color to lamp bases, frames of mirrors, or with linens and throws in the bedroom or bath.
If you’re ready to go BIG with color... Paint the ceiling. “Color doesn’t have to be on the walls,” Mathew says. “You could have a neutral room and apply a bold trend color to your ceiling.”
{
Redo the kids’ room. “Talk about trendy; kids are changing every couple years,” says Fikso, who suggests children’s bedrooms as the perfect place to experiment with playful hues. Word to the wise: Invest in neutral fixed finishes and large furnishings. Mathew recommends buying neutral furniture and soft goods, and woods that you’ll love for a long time—then playing with color from there.

Gray: A Modern Neutral 2012 is a pivotal year for gray, Lamb says. “The newest grays will fall on two different sides [of a spectrum]; they’ll be counter trends: One gray will be so cool, you might mistake it for blue. On the other side are grays that warm up almost as a taupe.” As a neutral, the hue will make a handsome backdrop for bright trend colors (think cool gray with spicy persimmon, synthetic yellow or vibrant purple). While gray may be an of-the-moment neutral—which has been embraced in many different iterations by consumers over the past couple years, according to Mathew—it’s also a classic hue. And classic neutrals will always be in style. So slather your walls with gray, opt for some punchy accessories and fear not that the look will fast become dated. Start north at 9th Avenue Collection (formerly “The Collection,” at 899 N. Broadway) to shop one of the greatest antiques inventories Denverwide. Then venture south to Lee Alex Décor (24 S. Broadway, Suite 104)—a favorite boutique for kicky mid-century furnishings—which has shown its dedication to the ’hood by upgrading to a larger showroom to house its delectable vintage finds. Just a skip away, newish “modern mercantile” Hazel & Dewey (70 S. Broadway) offers a carefully edited mix of clean-lined, cheery tabletop items, kitchen goods and house wares, many of them handcrafted and locally made. Then browse the flock of showrooms at Denver Design District (595 S. Broadway) or wander Antique Row, an assembly of shops from 1100 to 1800 S. Broadway. Be sure to set foot inside Alesso Modern Source (1238 S. Broadway), purveying sleek and swoon-worthy European lines, and recently relocated to the SoBo strip from the River North Art District (RiNo). Also new to the block is The Annex (1534 S. Broadway), an antiques collective curated by Christopher Watson of Watson & Co., that deals vintage style from more traditional to midcentury “funk” (think groovy neon signs and retro lighting).

WHERE IT BEGAN It was almost a year ago—last April to be exact—when Colorado Homes & Lifestyles and Closet Factory Colorado got together and dreamed up the “From Messy to Marvelous” closet makeover contest. CH&L readers sent in pictures of their messy, disorganized closets (as well as a quick explanation as to why they should win) for a chance to receive an incredible $25,000 makeover. After peeking into lots and lots of cluttered closets, we proclaimed Janet and Peter Brophy of Greenwood Village the winners. “I’ve wanted to redo our closet for awhile, but it’s always been overwhelming to me,” Janet Brophy says. “When I read about the contest, I thought, ‘Why not?’ I feel so grateful to have won.”
Interior designer Shannon Harris calls the look of the transformed closet “earthy elegance,” because of its organic, neutral tones highlighted by glamorous accessories. Case in point: A sleek bench by Thomas O’Brien for Hickory Chair, upholstered in red leather, provides the perfect spot for tying shoes; the pillow is by Lacefield. All accessories available through Ashley Campbell.
Centered above the island, the Fredrick Ramond light fixture in an oil-rubbed bronze finish from Illuminations by Design adds a rustic touch to the space. The homeowners, Janet and Peter Brophy, considered hardwood floors, but opted instead for the warmth and softness of carpet from Floor Coverings International.

BEFORE Although large, the Brophys’ original closet was poorly designed and lacked proper shelving and storage. The homeowners had also accumulated many items that didn’t belong in the space, such as luggage, area rugs and lamps. Professional organizer Sheryl Hadley, NAPO, helped the couple decide what should stay and what should be stored elsewhere. Sun Mountain Door custom-manufactured the poplar sliding doors, finished with a coat of Benjamin Moore’s Navajo White paint. “Rain” glass panels obscure the view into the closet but allow light to shine through. The center island, like the rest of the cabinetry, was designed, manufactured and installed by Closet Factory Colorado. Harris selected the creamy white paint, which was softened with a warm, caramel glaze and finished with oil-rubbed bronze hardware. Topped with Chroma Quartz in a warm gray color (called Oasis) fabricated and installed by Aspen Design and Fabrication, the island provides ample space for folding clothes and packing luggage. Pretty accessories from Ashley Campbell add glamour and elegance to the space, and—since every closet needs a full-length mirror—this Capiz shell-encrusted mirror from Palecek was chosen for functionality and style. The natural theme is continued with a recycled palm vase from Ibolili.
A DREAM CLOSET Closet Factory Colorado president Polly Lestikow, interior designer Shannon Harris of Ashley Campbell and contractor Bob Koelbel of Robert Koelbel Homes took charge of the transformation. “The original closet was designed so poorly, but that’s what made it interesting,” says Lestikow of the 12-foot-by-15-foot space. After spending some time learning about the homeowners’ needs and taking lots of measurements, Lestikow used CAD software to develop initial layouts. Several specific elements were worked into the design to fit the Brophys’ lifestyle. The big one: An island. “It’s basically a built-in dresser to store items like T-shirts and socks, and a very efficient way to use all that

space in the center of the room,” Lestikow says. The island, topped with a Chroma Quartz countertop from CAPCO Tile & Stone, offers plenty of drawer space as well as a hamper. Other practical features include tie and belt racks, slanted and flat shoe shelves, and valet rods that pull out from the cabinetry—great for selecting tomorrow’s outfit or keeping a pressed suit pristine. Cubbies under the window recapture wasted space and Peter Brophy’s “locker” provides hooks for a bathrobe, pajamas and sweatshirts. Once the pieces were in place to make the closet work efficiently, it was time to add some style. Enter Harris’s design expertise. Working with

BEFORE Janet Brophy felt overwhelmed by the prospect of organizing her closet, so Hadley, along with wardrobe consultant Liz Finkelstein of Mile High Style, helped her sort and purge. To determine the amount and type of hanging space needed, Closet Factory’s Polly Lestikow interviews her clients and takes note of important details such as the number of dresses a woman owns or if a man prefers his trousers to hang full length or folded.
Rocky Mountain Painters applied a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore’s Navajo White paint to the closets’ ceiling and trim. Thibaut seagrass wallpaper from Ashley Campbell (and installed by Rusty Begano) adds a natural, organic feel, as well as a hint of red, which is picked up in the Roman shade by Blind Corners & Curves. The shade’s “top down/bottom up” feature allows it to be lifted from the bottom or pulled down from the top, providing both light and privacy.
BEFORE
Tie and belt racks are just the beginning of the many custom options available through Closet Factory; cubby holes below the window, ideal for folded clothes and shoes, make the most of the space.
Lestikow, the designer worked up a scheme she calls “earthy elegance,” choosing cabinetry that features a slightly distressed finish, topped with traditional molding and accented by natural seagrass wallpaper and rustic hardware and lighting. “Once we got in the space and saw the [recently remodeled] adjoining master bath,” says Harris, “it was easy to see that a soft, slightly contemporary look would work.” But before order and beauty could be restored, a less-than-tidy step was necessary: demolition. General contractor Bob Koelbel was master organizer, working with various subcontractors to do the dirty work. Koelbel’s team removed the old storage systems, making way for the team from Destiny Electric to add electrical outlets and new can lights. South Valley Drywall followed, repairing the ceiling for paint and readying the walls for wallpaper. “My responsibility was to coordinate all the subcontractors in a sequential
38
COLORADOHOMESMAG.COM
manner,” Koelbel says, “so that everyone could get in, do their job and get out before the next person arrived”—a tall order, with so many moving parts. Not surprisingly, a glitch came when the new window, which the Brophys had already planned to replace, was delivered in the wrong size. “Glitches happen,” explains Koelbel. “As long as you can see the big picture, you can work through them.” And work through them they did. Clean shell (and correct window) in place, cabinetry was installed, wallpaper was hung, carpet was laid and finishing details were placed. The result? A beautiful, functional closet that will bring these lucky homeowners years of enjoyment. And Lestikow knows the value of such a gift: “You start and end your day in the closet; wouldn’t you want that space to be calm and organized?” Janet Brophy agrees. “It feels good, no doubt about it. We’re working on remodeling other parts of our home, and this is truly motivating.”

The design team refashioned this corner from chaotic to calm with glass-front cabinetry, a second pull-out hamper for dry cleaning and a shelving unit that is wired for a small beverage cooler if the homeowners choose to install a breakfast station someday. To the right, every woman’s dream: slanted shelving to store and display shoes. Before, this corner of the closet was a catch-all for purses, shoes and accessories. Removing the small wall and shelves opened the space for new, more efficient cabinetry and shelving.

Neutral by Nature A Crested Butte vacation home renovated by Dallas designer Jessica McIntyre shows the power of an understated palette
(this page) In the remodeled den, paint colors by Benjamin Moore— called Manchester Tan and Bear Creek—pair with the fireplace stone to set a soothing, neutral palette for the room; an Aidan Gray upholstered ottoman accents the pale Lee Industries sofa. The four side chairs, also by Lee Industries, are covered in a dark, velvety indoor/outdoor fabric (read: durable) called Flanders Bark. The resin moose antlers above the fireplace are from Restoration Hardware. (opposite) In the foyer, a black Four Hands Louis Sideboard contrasts boldly with the neutral wall color, as does the two-panel landscape; the kilim rug is from Denver-based Shaver-Ramsey.

(left) In the bright and airy breakfast nook, the artwork—a faded tobacco label on a wood panel—acts as centerpiece. The Isola wicker chairs by Artesia Collections offer the perfect excuse to linger with coffee before a big day on the slopes. (opposite) In place of a traditional oil painting, designer Jessica McIntyre created an art installation for the dining room with wall brackets from Ballard Designs, pewter chargers from Pottery Barn, antler trophies from Two’s Company and antique Chinese water vessels from Club Cu. The rustic Durango light fixture by Arteriors Home contrasts nicely with the more traditional Zentique dining chairs. The tonal damask rug is from Shaver-Ramsey.

CH&L: You were hired by a group of families to renovate and redecorate their Crested Butte vacation home. What was their vision?
Interior designer Jessica McIntyre: Vacation homes are usually approached differently than primary residences; homeowners are a little more laid back with the design process. In the case of this home, which is fractionally owned, I was given a lot of freedom with the design once an overall tone was established for the project. They wanted a clean, fresh and comfortable mountain home that didn’t include the typical log furniture and animal motifs you see from many out-of-state homeowners in Colorado. No one wanted it to feel like a theme park. We started with the clean envelope of walls painted in a simple palette and continued by selecting furniture with rustic finishes and clean lines. This house certainly feels fresh and clean—yet with a mountain sensibility.
The interior design was important to us, but so was the home’s durability—its ability to withstand both the families and their guests really living in the space. 48

For the chairs in the main living room, we went with a dark, indoor-outdoor acrylic fabric that looks and feels like velvet, but can be easily cleaned. The owners were not interested in a vacation home that appeared too stuffy or staged; they wanted a comfortable destination that fit well with the town of Crested Butte itself... laid back and casual.

It was decided right away that the interior needed to get away from the previous owner’s bold use of yellow, red, blue and chocolate-brown paint. Color certainly has its time and place, but our goal for Vista Butte—the name given to the property by its owners, for the vast views of the Gunnison Valley—was to create a timeless color palette that all partners would be pleased with. Two classic paint selections from Benjamin Moore were used throughout the entire project: Manchester Tan on all walls and ceilings—except in the powder room, where dark walls give an intimate feel—and Bear Creek [a darker shade of taupe] on all interior doors.
Andrew glass pendants add warmth. (opposite) The blue Viking range is the only vestige from the original kitchen; McIntyre thought the pop of color would stand out nicely with the new neutral theme.
Of course it took more than paint to transform this space. What else did you do to reinvent the home?
The ‘before’ house had ‘good bones,’ as a designer would say. The essentials were all in the right place and the floor plan was great on paper, but the interior finishes were bold and distracting in person. Previously, the bar, den and dining areas were all chopped up with different floor materials. By changing all of the flooring to hardwoods, it opened up the space and enlarged it visually. And then there was what I affectionately call the ‘mantel monstrosity’ [the fireplace surround], which was the focal point as you entered the home. It was out of scale, made up of a strange conglomeration of materials—including a hand-carved Indian mantel propped up on stones—and not at all functional within the main living space of the home. The most important step I took was to remove the entire thing and start over from scratch. Now the fireplace and mantel with ash-gray stone is the centerpiece of the entire project, and the gathering space for many fireside evenings. 50
BEFORE
Was anything left from the original home?
I’m no ‘foodie’—in fact, I stay away from the kitchen at all costs—but I do know a high-quality appliance when I see one. The customized Viking range was the one bold piece from the previous owner that we kept. The bright blue color became an acceptable option once the red walls were no longer there and the space afforded the range the attention it deserves. You and the homeowners are based in Dallas. Did the distance present any challenges?
We had the entire project’s furniture, rugs, lighting and art shipped to Texas, unpacked and inspected, before having it wrapped again and loaded on a moving van for the installation, only to have the driver try to make it to Crested Butte in the middle of January without snow chains. The van ended up in a snow bank on the clients’ street and had to be rescued by the town sanitation truck.
(above) The stone-colored linen sofa and chairs (from Weir’s Furniture in Dallas) get a pop of color from Pottery Barn antique kilim pillows and a green distressed media cabinet from Nadeau. The Arteriors Home rattan drum floor lamps repeat the natural element in the design, as does the reclaimed barn door that replaced the small window (pictured in “before,” above) to give the space flexibility.
52
BEFORE
(above) “The master bedroom is a great example of how natural elements were pulled in throughout the design,” McIntyre says. The drapes’ botanical print is meant to emulate Crested Butte’s summer wildflowers; the quail sculptures on the side table, the deer motif in the large antique pillow and the cowhide rug all tie into the natural theme as well.
DESIGN DETAILS Tell us about the elements in this house that nod to both Colorado and Texas.
The artwork in the foyer, an oil painting of a cow in a field, was selected because it could easily be a scene from Texas or Colorado, and because it had the right combination of color and subtlety. Antlers were used throughout the design to reinforce the natural element of the project. We wanted to use animals, in some form, without indulging in the typical bear-holding-skis motif. The antlers were a comfortable choice, since hunting is a popular recreation in Texas.

A respectful renovation adds present-day features and forward-thinking functionality to a mid-century home

EMILY MINTON REDFIELD
WAYNE AND LINDA LEE HAD SEARCHED FOR A HOME for more than a year, but when they discovered a 1950s home for sale near Chautauqua Park in Boulder the connection was instant. “It felt like a happy house,” Linda says. “The home’s modernist design brought back all the things we loved from the fifties and sixties.” Wayne, a retired architect, and Linda, an artist, had already renovated four
BEFORE Homeowners Wayne and Linda Lee preserved the living room’s original sandstone hearth, but replaced the white carpeting and fireplace doors. Dark-stained walnut flooring ties the space together with the family room and kitchen. Classic furnishings include a Noguchi coffee table and brown Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chairs. The custom rug is by Angela Adams, and the houndstooth pillow is from Lee Alex Decor. “We wanted to actually use the living room, not have it be just for show,” Linda says.
55
BEFORE homes together during their 46 years of marriage. This time around, they were inspired by the home’s good bones and classic design. Built in 1950, the residence was a generous wedding present given to the original homeowners, who lived there until the Lees purchased it in 2008. Aside from an addition in 1962 that included a rec room and master bedroom, the mid-20th-century modern home’s interiors had been virtually untouched. “We don’t believe bigger means better, so the home was the perfect scale for the two of us,” says Linda. “We’re also both in our seventies, and we thought the home’s single-level design would work well for us in the future.” The 3,100-square-foot floor plan was choppy, however, and the rooms were small—especially the kitchen. With three grandchildren who visit often, the Lees envisioned creating an open living space that would be better suited to entertaining.
56
BEFORE (above) “We like the energy of a round table for dining and conversation,” Linda says. “We didn’t put a rug down because without one, it’s easier to move the chairs.” Instead, the contractor removed the layers of wax and grime that obscured the original stone floors and a new skylight floods the room with natural light. The contemporary painting is by Boulder artist Kevan Krasnoff. (right) A wall of built-in cabinets was a popular amenity in the fifties, but in this kitchen, it chopped up the room and made the space feel dark. The green column to the left is the new support beam that allowed the builder to remove the entire load-bearing wall and open up the space between the dining room and kitchen.
“Preserving the authenticity of the fifties is what we were going for,” Wayne Lee says. “We wanted to respect the house as it was, while at the same time renovate it and bring it up to date.” Working with architect DiAnn Sherk of Boulder Associates, the couple shared their ideas and discussed possibilities. “Preserving the authenticity of the fifties is what we were going for,” Wayne says. “We wanted to respect the house as it was, while at the same time renovate it and bring it up to date.” Sherk and builder Cam Moore worked in tandem to bring the Lees’ dreams to fruition. Several walls were removed to open up the space, and many modifications made to bring the home up to code—including a new electrical system. “We knew we needed to rewire the whole house, but the vaulted ceilings made access impossible,”
58
Wayne says. “However, Linda and I always try to see problems as opportunities.” And since the home also needed a new roof, the couple decided to remove the top of the house, rewire everything, and add new insulation in the ceiling and walls. While everything was opened up, they added two skylights to bring in natural light. The layout now includes an ample living area, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, studio space for Linda and an office for Wayne. New dark-stained walnut flooring throughout the kitchen, living room and family room brings a sense of cohesiveness to the once-divided space. Drafty windows were replaced with new double-paned models,

and energy-efficient ceiling fans were installed overhead. “The home’s design naturally promotes good air flow, so we only had to run the air conditioning a few times this summer,” Wayne says. For the home’s interiors, the couple chose a palette of browns, blues and greens, and scouted period-appropriate materials and furnishings. “We think there’s beauty in consistency and simplicity,” Wayne says. “It’s been gratifying to live with furnishings by iconic designers like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. This home gave us an opportunity to reach back to happy times and the classic design and furnishings we’ve both always respected and enjoyed.”

Time-Tested Remodeling Secrets After completing five successful home renovations over nearly a half-century of marriage, Wayne and Linda Lee share their hard-won wisdom for getting the most out of the process:
Wait. “Be patient until you find the place that feels like home,” Linda says. “Trust your intuition and pay attention to your first impression. Look carefully at the overall structure and space. If the home has good energy, you can probably make it work.”
Envision. “Go into the space and first think of it as it currently exists, and then consider how it might look when you would occupy it,” says Wayne. “Project yourself into the home and see if your lifestyle could work within the space.”
Dream. “Renovating a home is a time to express your dreams,” says Wayne. “You don’t want to ask, ‘What if I’d...?’ later. Find a creative contractor who’s a ‘yes’ person, not a ‘no’ person—someone who will think with you and help you realize your dreams.”
Visualize. “Cut pictures from magazines or take photos of other spaces you like so you can communicate concisely what you want with your architect or contractor,” says Linda.

Budget. “Set a realistic budget, and then set aside some contingency money,” Wayne says. “You’ll never remodel an older property for less than your budget.”
Bend. “You never know what you’re going to find when you tear into an old property,” says Wayne. “We try to see problems as unexpected opportunities. That attitude makes renovation a much easier process.”

Design consultant and homeowner Noelle Hernandez saw past this West Aspen home’s 1980s style to create a sleek and modern family dwelling BY MARY BARTHELME ABEL
PHOTOGRAPHY
BY
DAVID PATTERSON
After living in Aspen for more than 20 years, Cecil and Noelle Hernandez decided that they wanted to move to the mountain town’s historic West End. Noelle Hernandez had her sights set on a home that was built in the mideighties and had been on the market for quite some time. “It looked so sad and neglected,” says Hernandez, a design consultant and owner of Aspen-based NCH Design. “Cecil took one look and hated it, but I was already dissecting it and deciding what I wanted to do with it.” After gaining permission for the project from the Aspen Historical Society and embarking on an intensive nine-month renovation, the couple is thrilled with their modern and family-friendly home. “I love it even more than I thought I would,” Hernandez says.
MODERN LIVING
BEFORE
Unhappy with just about every aspect of the house’s style, Hernandez served as her own general contractor and gutted it, replacing windows, floors and doors. “All we kept were the ceilings.” In the living room (and throughout the home), arched windows were replaced with streamlined and simple, blind-clad ones from Kolbe. “The house is so sunny and bright, and I don’t like draperies,” explains Hernandez. Custom chaise sofas and chairs from Berman Rosetti, accented with an AS Design silk pillow from HW Home and a linen pillow from Ashley Campbell, sit atop a silk-and-wool rug from Denverbased Allure. The custom-made coffee table and end tables are from Boykin Pearce; the glass bowl is from Venini. Hernandez also replaced the flooring with an ageless wire-brushed antique oak.
63
GATHERING PLACES Hernandez’s background is in kitchen and bath design, so she was more than comfortable taking on the kitchen remodel. “The original kitchen was set up for help; we cook and entertain and wanted it open so guests could come in.” Hernandez flipped the layout so the kitchen is on the other side of the room and opened up the wall leading to the dining room. A modern interpretation of barn doors, designed and crafted by Genesis Innovations, adds drama and closes off the space for more formal dinners. Genesis was also responsible for the kitchen cabinetry. A dark finish accented with simple, oversized hardware adds to the contemporary feel. Other unique features include a vent hood from Futuro Futuro, tile backsplash from Decorative Materials and a Gaggenau cooktop.
BEFORE
64
BEFORE
DINE IN STYLE Perhaps one of the most dramatic transformations in the house is the dining room, where Hernandez replaced the arched window with large sliding glass doors. These doors welcome an abundance of sunlight and slide open for an easy transition from indoors to out, and to create flexible space for large gatherings. “The sun sets on that side; it’s just perfect for evening entertaining,” Hernandez says. The dining room is a study in restrained, minimalist design. Leather Enzo chairs from Room & Board surround a Boykin Pearce custom table. Hanging overhead is a Satori chandelier from Kneedler-Fauchère. The definitive focal point of the room, Paul Pletka’s Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, was commissioned by Cecil Hernandez through Riva Yares Gallery in Santa Fe. The Hernandezes also expanded and updated the adjoining deck with a sleek metal railing and “fire ribbon” fireplace. Comfortable Sutherland furnishings from Carter Didlake invite guests to linger. 66

A SPA-LIKE SPACE The master bedroom and bath also received a complete makeover. In the bedroom and sitting area, a well-edited mix of clean-lined Donghia furnishings from John Brooks create a serene environment. Donghia lamps and an AS Design silk pillow from HW Home add a small punch of color to the quiet space. “There was a hammered-copper fireplace that overwhelmed the room,” Hernandez says. “We refinished that and added the cable lighting that highlights the great architecture of the ceiling. It gives you a completely different sense of the room.” The fact that Hernandez is a veteran bath designer is evident in this calm retreat. She knew the layout was solid (and there was no need to reconfigure plumbing), and so she focused on the pretty touches: a to-die-for Hastings soaking tub from Hutter+EuroBath and large-scale subway tile from Walker Zanger.

A HAPPY ENDING The Hernandezes have been in the home for a little over a year and are thrilled with the results. “I got everything I was looking for. We use the whole house and that makes me happy because no space is wasted.”

Short on traffic lights and tall on charm, Crested Butte delivers mountain-town appeal without the attitude
Denver Aspen
Django’s Restaurant & Wine Bar Locals and food critics agree that after a romping day on the slopes, Django’s is the spot to unwind. In the heart of Mountaineer Square at the base of the ski hill, the restaurant offers an extensive international wine list and cuisine that puts a Colorado spin on Southern European classics (think Rocky Mountain elk tartare). 620 Gothic Road. djangos.us
FOR A FULL DAY
For an afternoon off the beaten slopes:
STAY: Forget the drive home and check in at The Ruby of Crested Butte, a quaint, dog-friendly B&B run by husband-and-wife owners Chris and Andrea Greene, who serve up genuine small-town hospitality and a homemade, organic breakfast that’s worth waking up for.
Crested Butte Nordic Center Sledding, ice skating, photography workshops, backcountry snowshoe tours, and, of course, cross-country skiing—the list of activities is long for those who want to trade in their downhill skis for some other kind of outdoor fun. For a slower pace, opt for Sunday brunch or a moonlight dinner at the center’s Magic Meadows Yurt. 620 Second Street. cbnordic.org
XAVIER FANE
LEARN: To dig deep into the town’s colorful coalmining past—or to learn a little about the geology of the surrounding mountains —pay a visit to the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum, housed in an 1880s hardware store. SHOP: Wander down historic Elk Avenue and into one of the many charming boutiques: Zacchariah Zypp for jewelry and gifts, Retail Therapy for unique clothing, Pooh’s Corner for the little ones—just to name a few.
COLORADO Crested Butte
For après-ski bites and sips: For your morning caffeine fix:
Camp 4 Coffee
Serving 11 different kinds of small-batch, hand-roasted coffee beans, including the most popular blend, “SledgeHammer,” Camp 4 Coffee has been a Crested Butte staple since 1993—its name alluding to the mountain spirit of expedition about town. Get your steaming cup of joe from one of its two in-town locations (the original shack-like store is covered in license plates), or at the base of the mountain before a day on the slopes. 402 1/2 Elk Avenue. camp4coffee.com
For the perfect picture:
J.C. Leacock Photography and Gallery
For locally crafted microbrews: The Eldo Brewery & Taproom The Eldo pours 16 different brews—all made on-site with the brewpub’s seven-barrel system— and enjoys the favor of the locals: the spot is a three-time “Best of the Butte” bar winner, as voted by the townies. For a truly local experience, try the Eldo’s Sledgehammer Porter (made with Camp 4 Coffee espresso beans), and stick around for live music on week and weekend nights. 215 Elk Avenue. eldobrewpub.com
There are a number of ways to explore the Crested Butte high country; one of the best may be with a camera in hand. See some of the area’s most picturesque sights through the eyes of local photographer J.C. Leacock, who offers private tours and workshops, then stop by his gallery downtown to admire (or take home) one of his iconic western landscapes. 327 Elk Avenue. jcleacock.com —James Thornton and Caroline Eberly
