Weddings have changed so much since my husband David and I exchanged vows almost 17 years ago. For us, it was a very traditional affair. We held the ceremony at our family church and hosted a timeless reception at Wildwood Park for the Arts. Today, the options for wedding destinations are endless. Yet, none seem more magical than the ones found right here in Arkansas, which is why we have chosen to feature some of the state’s most stunning brides and beautiful venues in our newly expanded “Real Weddings” section. Mary Michele Michael & Todd Mazzanti THE DATE: February 9, 2013 HOW THEY MET: Mary Michele and Todd never guessed their paths would both lead back to their hometown of Lake Village—or to each other for that matter. Todd attended the University of Arkansas and went on to practice law in the New York City metropolitan area. Meanwhile, Mary Michele, who attended Belmont University, had a thriving career with a publicity firm and found herself in the company of Nashville stars including Hank Williams, Jr. However, strong ties led them both back to Lake Village to work in the family business—his, the family farm and hers, Paul Michael Company. The pair reconnected at an event at the Guachoya Cultural Arts Center. THE ENGAGEMENT: On Mary Michele’s birthday, Todd went to pick her up from work for a lunch at her Aunt Izzy’s. When she got in the car, he revealed a gorgeous diamond-and-sapphire ring, but quickly closed the box, saying “You can only have it if you agree to marry me!” THE PLANS: “Todd and I stayed out of every part of the planning,” laughs Mary Michele. “My family literally did everything and much of it was a surprise when we arrived at the reception. I didn’t even know what color my bridesmaids’ dresses would be until the day before the wedding,” she adds. The bride’s aunt, Lucy Hamilton, is an event designer and took the reigns when it came to planning, while a second aunt, Leah Michael, agreed to make both the bride’s and groom’s cake. Her mom, sister and soon-to-be mother-in-law handled the rest of the details to make the day both special and carefree for the couple. However, Mary Michele and Todd were very involved in the actual planning of their ceremony, meticulously selecting the readings and a poem by Kahlil Gibran that was especially dear to the bride’s late grandfather. THE BIG DAY: Both the bride’s and groom’s families have attended Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church for four generations, so it was only natural for the pair to be married there. Following the ceremony, they had a traditional New Orleans-style second line parade as a nod to Mardi Gras, then headed to the reception which was held in what is now the Paul Michael Company’s headquarters and ecommerce building. “I literally walked around for the first 30 minutes saying ‘wow.’ My family did such an amazing job with everything,” says the bride. Since, Todd’s family is Italian and Mary Michele’s is Lebanese, this heritage became the inspiration for a regional-inspired menu. For the grand finale, they made their exit down a line of guests who held sparklers, and boarded a private plane for the honeymoon. 16 Weddings in Arkansas | Edition II 2013

Taylor Lovelace & Sam Waddell THE DATE: June 22, 2013 HOW THEY MET: There are some things you just never outgrow. Thankfully, for high school sweethearts Taylor and Sam, their relationship fits just as perfectly now as it did eight years ago when they went on their first date. THE ENGAGEMENT: After dating through high school, college and graduate school, the couple was ready for marriage. Each year they travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina with Sam’s family for summer vacation. During the last night of their most recent vacation, Sam took Taylor to an old dock overlooking a beautiful marsh at sunset. There, he surprised her with a gorgeous ring and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him. Of course, she said “yes!” THE PLANS: Taylor had always dreamed of a June wedding. “Sam and I are both big football fans, so we didn’t want to have a wedding during football season,” she laughs. Aside from the timing, the couple knew they wanted to be married in their hometown of Jonesboro in the church where Sam had grown up. They wanted the day to have a traditional, classic feel with white roses, black bridesmaids’ dresses and traditional black tuxedos. “Just like most young girls, I had been planning my wedding day for a very long time,” she adds. THE BIG DAY: Among a crowd of 400 well-wishers, Taylor and Sam exchanged vows in the same church where Sam’s parents had been married 25 years earlier. “Being able to be married at the church Sam grew up in was very special to us,” says Taylor. Following the ceremony, guests were invited to a tented reception at the nearby home of a family friend. Here, they were greeted with a large buffet spread featuring everything from smoked salmon to a create-your-own pasta station. The bride and groom cut into a beautiful vanilla and strawberry cake, and Taylor surprised Sam with an Arkansas Razorback-themed groom’s cake. The couple had their first dance to Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love,” and had their guests join them on the dance floor for a night of celebrating. They made their exit through a tunnel of sparklers set against a star-filled night sky.

Jenny Estoker & Bryan Scanlon THE DATE: April 27, 2013 HOW THEY MET: Although Jenny had been working in the same department as Bryan at Stephens, Inc. for almost a year, the two had never met. In 2009 they were finally introduced, and began the start of a three-anda-half year relationship before saying “I do.” THE ENGAGEMENT: Bryan took Jenny to Brave New Restaurant, which also happened to be the site of the couple’s first date. When they arrived, he escorted her into the kitchen where he had lit candles and placed a huge bouquet of red roses next to a framed picture of them. Jenny gasped when she turned around to see Bryan standing there looking a bit nervous. “He held my hands and told me how much he loved me, and then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him,” she recounts. THE PLANS: “I had always dreamed of getting married in a big, beautiful cathedral-style church—the kind you see in movies,” says Jenny. When she saw Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, she knew she’d found the perfect place. In a similar fashion, the reception site was also important and the couple wanted it to have a personal feel and connection. For Jenny, Pavilion in the Park reminded her of her time living in Europe. “The outdoor feel of the wide open space, the windowed ceilings, plants, quaint storefronts and lighting all reminded me of being outdoors on the cobblestone roads of Europe,” she says. With these two venues and a spring event in mind, the pair found a date—April 27th—that would work for both and began the rest of their planning. THE BIG DAY: With a crowd of 250 friends and family, Jenny and Bryan exchanged vows in the church’s sanctuary. From there, they headed to Pavilion in the Park for a spirited celebration. The couple made their grand entrance down the spiral staircase, and then had their first dance to “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” Guests dined on fare from Trio’s restaurant, along with a bride’s cake from Mickey’s Special Affairs, which included both vanilla and strawberry layers. For the groom’s cake, Bryan chose a variety of pies from Charlotte’s Eats & Sweets in Keo. A photo booth, along with the sounds of the Memphis Soul Revue, provided lively entertainment. When it was time to make their exit, the couple departed in a shower of rose petals tossed by well-wishers.

Jordan Lupo and Ryan Heath THE DATE: April 20, 2013 HOW THEY MET: A love of helping others and the world of medicine brought Jordan and Ryan together. The two, who are both currently internal medicine residents at UAMS, met during their freshman year of medical school. THE ENGAGEMENT: Jordan and Ryan were on a getaway to one of their favorite destinations, Watercolor, Florida. Ryan packed a picnic basket for the couple to take to Watercolor Gardens. As Jordan was unpacking the basket she found all her favorite things inside, Riesling wine, cheese and nuts—and finally, a ring box at the bottom of the basket. When she turned around, Ryan was on his knee to propose. THE PLANS: The couple knew they wanted to be married in spring and April is Ryan’s favorite month, so they opted for the 20th. Both being central Arkansas locals, they also wanted to host the event near their family and friends. Chenal Country Club proved to be the perfect location, allowing them to have both their ceremony and reception at one site. The location was also sentimental, as the couple had their first date here. THE BIG DAY: With a crowd of 200 guests looking on, the couple exchanged vows, and then made their way to the reception as “Kiss the Girl” from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” played for the recessional. The couple shared their first dance to Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.” For her cake, Jordan chose strawberry layers covered with white chocolate, while Ryan opted for cookie sandwiches served with milk at the groom’s table. When it was time to say their goodbyes, the two shared one last dance to Van Morrison’s “Brown-Eyed Girl.” They made their grand exit amidst guests tossing white petals from paper cones, which made from the pages of their favorite books. Tiffany Burgess & Ben Adams THE DATE: May 18, 2013 HOW THEY MET: Sometimes, just what you’ve been looking for is closer than you think. Tiffany and Ben grew up together in the England area, went to the same school for several years and even went to youth functions together. However, it was years later before they started dating after a mutual friend suggested the two would be a good match. THE ENGAGEMENT: The area where they grew up—and now live—is very important to both Tiffany and Ben. Tiffany has always loved “the trees,” a section of allée-style plantings along a road in Scott. On a fall night, Ben told her they were going to dinner in Little Rock, and they were taking “the long way” through the tree-lined road. About halfway through their trip, he slowed the car (he had been driving rather fast trying to beat a thunderstorm!), and pulled into an orchard where he walked her down a path lit with candles in mason jars to a table filled with flowers and the ring. “It was perfect—and so us,” she says. Ben’s sister and cousin were there to capture the moment with their cameras. THE PLANS: Eager to say “I do,” the couple wanted a short engagement. Marlsgate, a plantation near the couple’s hometown, was only available on one Saturday in the spring. They jumped at the date and worked to pull together traditional, timeless details with a bright, spring-like theme. “My mom was a huge part of our planning, and we definitely couldn’t have pulled the wedding together in six months without everything she did,” says Tiffany. THE BIG DAY: Surrounded by their family and friends, the couple exchanged vows in the church where Ben grew up and that they now attend together. Then it was on to Marlsgate for a true Southern-style reception on the grounds of the plantation. With blooming May gardens in the background, the couple showed off the dance moves they had learned over the past months. For the bride’s cake, Tiffany chose her favorite, strawberry cake with pink icing, while the groom opted for his favorite, miniature caramel pies from Keo’s Charlotte’s Eats and Sweets. Well-wishers dined on traditional fare, including bacon-wrapped quail and Gulf shrimp, while sipping strawberry champagne to the sounds of The Big John Miller Band. He Said: “I was so happy the wait was finally over. Getting to stand next to her and take our vows in our church was one of the best things about the day.” She Said: “We left the church in a beautiful vintage convertible on loan from a family friend. However, on our way to the reception the car actually broke down. Rather than panic, we both laughed. Luckily, my parents were right behind us and gave us a ride the rest of the way. I don’t think our guests even knew!”

Kady Courtney & Tyler Newton THE DATE: May 11, 2013 HOW THEY MET: Timing was everything when it came to Kady and Tyler Newton’s relationship. Although the pair had grown up within miles of one another and even attended the University of Arkansas at the same time, it took 22 years and a chance meeting on a night out with friends for them to connect. THE ENGAGEMENT: Both Kady and Tyler knew early on in their relationship that this was “the one.” However, as they talked about their future they both wanted the surprise element to play a part in their engagement story. On May 31, 2012, Tyler gave Kady the biggest shock of her life by surprising her after her shift at a Little Rock hospital where she works as an ICU nurse. When the elevator doors to the ground floor of the hospital opened Tyler was standing there, ready to propose with a beautiful ring. He even hired a photographer to capture the moment and coordinated a family engagement party. THE PLANS: The couple knew they wanted to be married outdoors. “We love doing things outdoors and there is just something romantic, Southern and beautiful about outdoor weddings,” says Kady. Luckily, they found a dream spot, which happened to be at their chosen reception site—the Clinton Library. Planner Larry West took the helm to execute the couple’s “romantic, lovely and personal” vision, and Kady stayed involved with a DIY approach to many of the details. THE BIG DAY: In the company of 300 guests, Kady and Tyler said “I do,” had their first dance to Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” and dined on delicious Southern fare from a menu they created with the help of the staff at The Clinton Library’s Forty Two restaurant. For a personal touch they each chose a flavor for the layered wedding cake. Kady selected Key lime cheesecake, while Tyler opted for an Elvis Presley cake, which combines peanut butter, chocolate and bananas. When it was time to say goodbye, guests wished the couple well with sparklers, and the two were whisked away in a vintage white Cadillac Lasalle. Edition II 2013 | weddingsinarkansas.com 49

Ali Lewis & Jake Funk THE DATE: January 20, 2013 HOW THEY MET: Weddings seem to be a reoccurring theme in Ali and Jake’s relationship. They met July 15, 2011 at the wedding of a mutual friend where Ali was a bridesmaid and Jake was the wedding singer. THE ENGAGEMENT: Exactly one year to the date later, Jake popped the question. The couple had marked each month anniversary with a small celebration, and Ali thought Jake was making this one extra special when she woke up to cards and a bouquet of flowers he had dropped off the previous night. They spent the day together and went to a special dinner. However, Jake saved the biggest surprise for last when he took Ali to their favorite park and asked her to marry him. THE PLANS: From the start, Ali envisioned their wedding day would be “very outdoorsy and simple” to match the couple’s laid-back personalities. The biggest decision came in deciding whether to marry in Ali’s home state of Oregon or in Northwest Arkansas. In the end, the couple decided to be close to their friends and church family and chose Fayetteville for the celebration. THE BIG DAY: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fayetteville was the setting for Ali and Jake’s ceremony. The choir from Grace Church in Siloam Springs, where Jake was serving as choirmaster at the time, serenaded the couple and guests with “The Servant Song,” which proved to be one of Ali’s favorite memories of the day. From there, guests headed to Pratt Place Barn to continue the celebration. To incorporate parts of her Oregon heritage into the day, Ali had her mom bring tons of pinecones, tree branches and wood disks from her family’s home and property. These were scattered about the reception site adding to the natural look and bringing a part of the Pacific Northwest to the celebration, connecting the bride and her family to their home state. Continuing with the same theme, the happy couple left the reception through a tunnel of friends and family who tossed small whirlies (which fall from trees in a spinning fashion) as they said their goodbyes.
