EDITOR’S LETTER PHOTO BY

MATT KOCOUREK

A SOFTER SIDE Word on the street is that you’ll be seeing more of a refreshed, lighter color palette this year. Starting with spring, “designers take a modern twist on the traditional by pairing soft pastels with vivid brights to create a colorful equilibrium,” according to the Pantone Color Institute. For the fall, they’re calling for bright, vibrant hues mixed with some deeper, darker tones, creating atypical color pairings, which increases options for individuality. From Benjamin Moore’s Breath of Fresh Air to PPG Pittsburgh Paints’ Turning Oakleaf, national paint companies debuted a wide range of softer color palettes with subdued hues, offering a couple brighter options, too. Serene master bedrooms and spa-like baths are continuing in popularity. Kitchens, however, are taking on a bolder look, while living and dining rooms are showcasing fashionable neutrals with pops of color. Our local living room feature brought in color through accessories; the dining room flaunts a red ceiling. And, when paint just isn’t enough, we’ve provided you with more colorful fabrics, fixtures, wallcoverings and accessories than you’ll know what to do with. Enjoy dreaming up your next remodel as you tear through the pages of our third annual Color issue. As you know, whatever comes off the runway goes directly into home decor. Home design I can handle; fashion design requires some assistance. So, when deciding what to wear for my photo in this issue, I went to a friend for advice — and clothing. Bridgette Baker, owner of Ruby Rouge, a boutique in

downtown Overland Park, took her passion for fashion and

opened her own shop about a year ago. As I breezed by the racks of clothes, the tank in coral, my favorite color, immediately caught my eye. She added the lace blouse, something I never would have picked out, and assured me that lace is in this year. She paired it with skinny jeans, which I’m still getting used to wearing; short brown boots; and a turquoise necklace. I loved it so much that I bought the whole outfit.

TIPS FROM THE PROS Bedrooms and Bathrooms: “At the end of a busy day, when your head touches your pillow, it simply feels good to be surrounded by lulling colors like soft blue and spa green. In the morning, before you start your day, it only makes sense to feel comfort in the bathroom as you get ready for a new day. Pastel blues and greens, along with soft yellows, have a gentle way of calming the soul.”

~ Wendy Guehne, designer/co-owner of remodeling & design company Guehne-Made Kitchens: “Color is being used in the kitchen as a personal expression. In cabinetry, it’s not uncommon for us to select a hutch or to single out a cabinet or two for a pop of color. Backsplash tile is also a favorite place for a splash of color, with other surfaces kept neutral. Even appliances are showing up in bold colors and were featured at this year’s KBIS show. Today, anything goes!”

~ Elizabeth Rishel, CKD, owner of Design by Orion Living and Dining Rooms: “Bluish-purple paint will bring a living room to life. Blue is calming, and purple is royal and energetic. So, if some of the accessories or fabrics are shades of ‘just’ blue or shades of ‘just’ purple, it would be a great balance with the walls. For the dining room, red stimulates the appetite and energizes conversation. It's warm and inviting. Red always has been and will be a great dining room color. Navy blue wall paint also is great in the dining room. I personally think any of the darker colors in a dining room envelopes you and says ‘come stay awhile.’ On the color wheel, with blue and orange opposite each other, they are wonderful complements.”

Letting go of her inhibitions, a young homeowner makes a bold statement with color. Not everyone can live with midnight blue walls. But designer Nichole Loiacono’s client, a young professional living in a small house in the suburbs, has enough edge in her style to commit to it and make it work beautifully. The walls of her living room were already painted in Blackbird by Behr before Nichole jumped in to help her client find direction. She didn’t want to change the wall color because of the coziness and depth it brought to the room, but says the space needed some oomph through color and accessories. “She had some basic elements already happening in there, she just needed the details to make it special,” Nichole explains. Finding that her designer shared her own aesthetic, the client gave Nichole free rein with the design. “I ran every decision by her, but she literally said, ‘go crazy, don’t hold back,’ which is a rarity among clients,” Nichole notes. The sofa provided a great base for the design, while the rug truly united the room. The rest of the design came about organically, incorporating a few vintage pieces from Etsy and antique malls, along with custom artwork from Black Crow Studios. Throughout the project, color remained an inspiration. “I think people can be resistant to color because it is a commitment,” Nichole says. “It’s safer to shy away from the bold, but sometimes you really can miss out on the spectacular.”

When two architects live together, creative design happens. Kelly Horner, a retired interior architect, and her husband, Kirk, AIA, president of Hollis + Miller Architects, transformed their ’80s kitchen into what they call a “Contemporary Craftsman” style full of custom features. To bring their vision to life, the Horners called in Pat Strand with Total Home. Built-in wine racks, displaying sentimental bottles, flank the enlarged opening between the kitchen and living room. The decorative stacked slate column, matching the floors, was Kelly’s idea; Kirk was responsible for the LED cove lighting, pop-out outlets and floating ceiling boxes. The colors — Sherwin-Williams’ Luau Green, Valspar’s Bus Top Tour, Allen + Roth’s Summer in the City and Eddie Bauer Home’s Raisin — were a collaborative effort, though it had to incorporate purple, Kelly says, and she did all the painting. The large, two-tiered island, with Caesarstone counters, seats eight and cleverly hides an abundance of GE appliances, including their favorite, the built-in ice maker. “It’s a splurge we will never live without,” Kelly says. The perimeter cabinetry, custom-built by Total Home, provides plenty of deep drawers and shelving for dishes, pots and pans (with custom racks and dividers), and pantry space — and all come equipped with the soft-close feature. Their next project? Completing the adjoining powder bath with the same color palette as the kitchen.

DIG IN

Leawood homeowners Cole Martin and Kelli Andresen, both in the medical field, found a creative outlet in remodeling their entire home, starting with the main level. “They wanted a neutral, modern space with pops of color,” says designer Kelly Lankford, president of KHL Design Studio. Opposite of what they have now, the former dining room featured a late ’80s-early ’90s modern style with cobalt blue faux-painted walls, white chair rail and a red metal wall sculpture. The dining table was the only piece that made the move to the new space. Their current dining room shines in a sea of gray, topped with Benjamin Moore’s Burnt Peanut Red. Light gray-painted molding (as well as trim) separates the Romo wallpaper, with metallic sheen, from the statement red ceiling. The small bump-out in the back was the perfect place for a new buffet table, attractively adorned with a print by local designer Jennifer Bertrand. A bird canvas mirrors the window wall covered in sheer Villa Romo fabric, while the light fixture and wall sconces by Stonegate Designs add to the neutral color palette. A subtle gray rug brings warmth to the repurposed hardwood floors. Dining, in this newly revised space, will never be the same.

In order to bring their Kansas City, Mo., retreat back to life, Patrick Ryan and Paul Lober brought in Perry Quick, AIA, owner of Novus Architecture, who moved some walls, rearranged door openings and eliminated impractical closet space, improving the flow from the bedroom to bath and new closet beyond. With a new design in place, next came the decor. Surrounded by the steel blue look of Sherwin-Williams’ Granite Peak, the bedroom features modern pieces with a touch of the old. The Aviation chair and sleek Big Ass Fan pairs well with the steel-looking dresser and bed frame, with additional color exploding from local artwork, but it’s the fireplace wall that required the most attention. The homeowners were persuaded into keeping and refurbishing the original fireplace mantel and surround, circa 1920, which has what Perry calls an “Adamesque” feel to it. To bring it into the present day, he gave it a facelift with new tile, put in a ventless gas insert and flanked it with custom built-in shelving. “The added built-in bookcases are a huge change and a great way to showcase items we have collected over the years,” Patrick says. The last accessory added was the handmade metal fireplace accent created by a local blacksmith as well as the metal sculpture on display. It’s now a calming, relaxing space they love.

INSPIRED BY NATURE Soft blues and greens soothe stress in this Lakewood remodel.

Nature is often the muse for home design. In the bathroom, where the element of water runs freely, it makes sense that water’s hues of blue and green often make an appearance. In fact, they are partially responsible for creating the “spa-like” bathroom that is popularized in modern design. Take Paul and Anita Weida’s master bath, for instance. The couple, who lives in Lee’s Summit’s Lakewood community (note the additional water reference), recently remodeled their way out of a cramped space with separate room for the toilet, bidet and shower into an open, minty-fresh place to begin and end their days. Sue Shinneman, CKD, of Kitchen Studio: KC, was brought on board to redesign the bathroom. “They hated using the existing bath,” she notes, and it’s not hard to understand why, with its dark tile and mirrors left in place from the 1980s build job. The Weidas have systematically moved from room to room in the house, remodeling to suit their needs and taste, ultimately creating a cohesive contemporary style throughout. Anita wanted a clean, spa-like feel for the bath, “a place she would enjoy being in,” Sue says. River rocks inspired the soft, blue-green hue of the walls; the smooth pebble tiles are used in the shower panel and vanity backsplash. Even after the remodel, there isn’t an abundance of natural light in the space. “That’s why we chose the lighter paint color and the ‘glass art’ piece to be reflective,” Sue says. While the overall feel of the space is serene, a complementary color subtly comes into play. “The bit of red tone to the engineered mahogany veneer vanity complements the bit of green undertone to the paint color,” Sue explains. 56
