KC & HG EDITOR’S LETTER PHOTO BY BOB GREENSPAN

As I reflect back on the past year, I’m thankful (blessed, really) for a lot of things: my wonderful husband and kids (human and four-legged), parents, sister and niece, extended family and friends, a warm place to live in a city that I love and, on a not-so-serious note, the different styles and colors popping up in homes across the metro area, as evident in the six kitchens featured in this issue, starting on page 32 with this industrial-style kitchen. Homeowners are taking a step on the creative “wild” side to combine styles — with the help of local designers, of course — including vintage, industrial, transitional, traditional, classic and contemporary. Simply bringing your home up to date also can be a challenge, as you’ll see in our before-and-after feature (page 44) of a hearth room and kitchen. I’m sure many of you will remember the floral wallpaper… This year, our resolution is to create an even better product for you, our readers, so we’ve added new departments (one on trends and another on home products and/or accessories) as well as a brand-new annual publication called Blueprint, which will bring you features, products and tips from the pros on building, remodeling, architecture, interior design and landscaping. Some oldies but goodies will remain: Cooking School events, the Lake Living department and our Color issue, due out in March. (Stay tuned for the new color trends and how to use them in your home.) I can’t tell you enough how much I love the

EVERYDAY GLAMOUR The formal dining room in Joe and Tricia Gianni’s home features traditional decor with a touch of glamour. Grass cloth adds pattern, color and texture to the walls while also setting the space apart from the home’s main level. They chose a blue damask pattern with flecks of gold. The same shade of blue is used throughout the house to connect all rooms. The light fixtures are “dripping with crystals,” which contributes to the glamorous styling. A small chandelier is a nod to traditional dining rooms, yet its size keeps it from overpowering the room. The chandelier hangs above a table surrounded by Queen Anne-style dining chairs. Upholstered chairs at the heads of the table add comfort and a touch of color. Storage is essential in a dining room, but rather than fill an entire wall with furniture, the Giannis went with a customized look. The hutch is replaced with an ornate mirror and sconces that sit over the buffet, while a smaller chest of drawers offers additional storage. 20

LIGHTING

TEXT BY GLORIA GALE

“The most important thing? Perfect lighting at all times” – Oscar de la Renta Illumination put Paris, the City of Light, on the map, so just imagine what it can do for you. If a room –– any room –– isn’t appointed with the appropriate lighting, whether it’s task, ceiling or floor, the mood quickly disintegrates. Manufacturers, keenly aware of lighting’s magical effects, cast a spotlight on the latest bejeweled, tactile, LED and sculptural fixtures. These four trends will burn the brightest in the year ahead.

Currents Technology is “LEDing” the way. Museo’s design associate Trinh Trieu has noticed a huge trend in the use of LEDs (light emitting diodes). “The use of LEDs opens up new possibilities in design not previously possible with traditional lighting methods. The advantages of LED lighting are heightened efficiency and durable, long-lasting and versatile bulbs,” she says. In contrast, there’s still a yen for nostalgia, using antique-style illumination. “The choice of bulb is as important as the shade,” explains Mark Moussa, owner of luxury home furnishings company Arteriors. “Options range from silver-tipped round bulbs to tubular bulbs or frosted and Moooi

clear bulbs.”

The Shining Long ago, Waterford and Swarovski realized the gravitas a crystal chandelier could evoke. The beauty of glass has never wavered. Of late, imaginative designers showing product at High Point and the Dallas home furnishing markets decided that adding color to the crystals could heighten the effect. “The hottest looks feature a radiant show of cool crystals in clear and colored glass,” Mark says. Color-infused glass presents an edgy nod to modernity. Hotel Sorella, Kansas City's newest boutique hotel, is right on trend, generating a lot of buzz with its stunning custom blue glass chandelier in the lobby.

Offering The Finest For Over 25 Years

Innovative Form As far back as the 1950s, revered designer Isamu Noguchi was crafting Akari lamps, handmade paper stretched over bamboo framing. Today, Tim Butt, owner of Black Bamboo, is intrigued with the modern interpretation of the iconic concept. “Lighting specialist Artemide has partnered with Japanese designer Issey Miyake. The result is a twist on the Akari, using recycled fabric that can be folded into three-dimensional structural forms without the use of an internal frame,” he says.

Reach Out and Touch More unusual materials captured attention at markets, including metal, acrylic, grasses, shells, stone, and even paper and macramé. “The use of innovative materials, particularly a lacquered paper mache chandelier and another featuring macramé, we found to be very inventive,” says Lisa Mermis, principle of Twigs Interiors. Trinh says Styrofoam and concrete are two other cutting-edge entries showing up in the marketplace, while Arteriors is showcasing a column of bark on a new floor lamp design.

VINTAGE CHIC Tucked away in Prairie Village is Leigh Ann Cleaver’s industrial-style kitchen. This “vintage chic” space, as Leigh Ann describes it, mixes new and old pieces alike, incorporating her flea market finds with modern accessories. Kitchen designer Genevieve Hamel, AKBD, with Kitchens by Kleweno, wanted to make the compact space feel and look bigger without altering the footprint, so she expanded the wall opening between the kitchen and living room and incorporated a mix of materials that work well together. “It’s a much more fun, usable space,” Leigh Ann says. Surrounded by shades of gray (including a painted ceiling) and soft-close custom cabinetry, this former small, dark corner kitchen now has updated lighting and an island on casters (for looks), Leigh Ann’s favorite part of the kitchen, as well as the microwave housed in the island, also used by her sons, Logan, 15, and Luke, 13. The reclaimed wood on the island — and on the hood — pairs well with the attached concrete tabletop that’s stylishly affixed to a stand (formerly used in a pub) found at Foundation Architectural Reclamation. The furniture-style bar, with a stainless steel countertop and custom cubbies for mail, adds a hint of glamour to the space, showcasing antique mirrored glass knobs and beveled tile backsplash, which softens the look and feel of the perimeter concrete countertops. “What I love most about [this kitchen design] is that it represents Leigh Ann,” Genevieve says. “I’m proud that I really captured her, and that’s what’s really important.”

QUITE CONTEMPORARY George and Pam Darrington hired Chris Fein, AIA, LEED AP, owner of Forward Architecture + Design, to revamp their Overland Park kitchen, so he transformed it into a functional, contemporary space wrapped in waves of ribbons. “We refer to the kitchen as the ribbon kitchen because of the walnut “ribbon” that divides the family room from the kitchen and also acts as the breakfast bar,” Chris explains. White Corian counters also display the same free-flowing linear motion, wrapping from the back wall, across the countertops, down to the floor. Sleek walnut cabinets, a request of the homeowners, with clean, hardware-free fronts add to the innovative design. “We wanted it to be functional and cooking-friendly but also entertaining-friendly because it ties into our family room,” George says. “The design is beautiful, kind of contemporary, but it has a real warmth and depth to it. We say it all the time: We love this kitchen.” Appliances and light fixtures were purchased prior to the renovation, so Chris cleverly integrated them into the new design, including recessing an area over the basement staircase for the refrigerator to look built in. The back corner houses a pass-through to the garage with trash cans underneath. “This eliminated the dead corner and allows for easy transport of groceries in and trash out,” Chris says. The former exterior wall between the kitchen and family room presented a P H O T O S B Y B O B G R E E N S PA N

challenge in seamlessly joining the two spaces. The solution came in the form of a ceiling beam, opening up the space and supporting roof rafters, while new built-in bookshelves — that match the kitchen’s gray Corian backsplash — were an added bonus that the clients love. To push it over the modern edge, the breakfast bar sports Jamaica barstools by Knoll.

CLASSIC BUT CASUAL Lore and Mike Nelson returned from a Hawaiian vacation to find their Mission Hills home under water after a water line from the washer ruptured, resulting in a new “classic but casual kitchen,” as designer Sarah Marshall Jipping, AKBD, with Armstrong Kitchens, calls it. For a larger, more functional space, the exterior wall was bumped out a few feet and a wall and door separating the kitchen from the sitting room were removed. “We wanted a place where people would want to come, sit and hang out,” Lore says. The classic design of the kitchen features functional spaces, quality craftsmanship, and customized prep and storage space. Contrast is found in painted white maple upper cabinets with cherry base cabinetry — but all doors and drawers share the same soft-close feature. White Caesarstone counters provide a large amount of prep space, including a bar top with built-in coffeemaker and spacious “baking station” (a.k.a. the island), with prep sink, a stand lift for Lore’s KitchenAid mixer and drawers that feature custom container cubbies for ingredients. But the island isn’t the only feature that received special attention — drawer space by the sink was designed specifically for the family’s silver, and a pull-out spice rack by the range makes seasoning a cinch. The pizza oven, a focal point in the space, is a feature that Lore and Mike have always wanted. A former mudroom is now an extension of the kitchen, featuring brick flooring and a bar center with beverage refrigerator and ice P H O T O S B Y B O B G R E E N S PA N

maker (mimicking Sonic’s popular ice cubes). A few appliances and furniture pieces were salvageable (like an heirloom hutch), but the Nelsons had to buy a new range, which Lore loves, as well as a dishwasher and microwave.

MID-CENTURY MODERN The former home of architect Peter Keleti featured a modern 1960s style. “The goal was to create a kitchen that reflected both the home’s and [new owner] Steve [Pennington]’s personalities,” says designer Gayle Jagoda, CKBR, with Schloegel Design Remodel. Though Steve doesn’t cook much, he still wanted updated style and function in his L-shaped kitchen. Guests are immediately enamored with the LED-illuminated display case (replacing closet doors) and its worldwide collection of plates and accessories. The built-in espresso machine, with warming drawer below, is one of only two appliances Steve uses (the other is the microwave). Morning coffee can be enjoyed at the peninsula, topped with Cold Spring granite that continues all the way to the floor, while the “jellyfish” light fixture hanging from the original pine ceiling adds a touch of whimsy to the space. The architectural cut-out in the wall above the display case not only opens up the room but is also Steve’s favorite design element. A new opening in the wall between the family room and original bar reveals the new scotch bar (former location of the washer and dryer) put on display, again, with LED lighting, an overall lighting solution in this challenging space. A raised bar top provides more elbow room by the original wood bar top, salvaged to “maintain some of the original personality of this home,” Gayle says. Storage space was maximized within espresso-stained red oak cabinetry, featuring soft-close drawers, roll-out shelving, a custom spice rack and hidden pantry. Dual dishwasher drawers and a Fisher & Paykel range (that has never been used) are other modern additions. The timeless design aesthetic of the natural stone mosaic tile backsplash complements the Caesarstone counters around the perimeter and natural stone flooring from Portugal. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

TRANSITIONALLY SOPHISTICATED Tim and Jessica Tiegreen’s Leawood kitchen, originally rustic with wood paneling and oak cabinetry, is now open, airy and elegant. It’s comfortable in its transitional style with clean lines and a touch of sparkle — and was completed shortly after baby Maxton’s early arrival. “The most important request we had when designing the kitchen was to open up the space into the living room, creating an open floor plan,” says designer Lauren Scassellati, with Portfolio Kitchen & Home. “This also allowed for an amazing view into the backyard when entering the home.” The white furniture-style custom cabinetry and gray-painted wood-plank walls in the breakfast nook set the stage for the space’s neutral color palette; a large espresso-stained maple island — a must-have on the wish list — adds a graceful contrast. This kitchen is pretty to look at, but its functionality is top-notch, too. “Every cabinet has a specific purpose and was outfitted with organizational inserts to meet the client’s needs,” Lauren says. Custom storage includes a pull-out waste container; utensil insert next to the range; a pull-out for spices and oils; and large drawers along the perimeter for pots, pans and mixing bowls. Caesarstone quartz countertops contain mica flecks that add a little shimmer — as does the porcelain tile backsplash from Spain. These reflective surfaces sparkle under the George Kovacs pendants, with an embedded crystal pattern in the chrome P H O T O S B Y B I L L M AT H E W S

drum shade, pairing perfectly with the crystal accents in the nearby chandelier. “After touring house after house, we realized we were drawn to the clean look of a white, sparkling kitchen,” Jessica says. “We couldn’t be happier with the finished product. We absolutely love our kitchen!”

blueprints.” This eye for design is how the Giannis remodeled their family home four years ago. “I didn’t like anything about the house,” Tricia recalls. “The walls were covered in stained wallpaper, the kitchen flow was terrible, and the sink and refrigerator were in the wrong places.” To fix the flow of the kitchen for their family of six, they opened up a wall and created an open floor plan for the main level. The wall they removed separated a small hearth room from the kitchen. It was also the divider between carpet and hardwood. They replaced the carpeted area with hardwood to create a continuous flow from room to room. Instead of simply ripping up the old carpet and replacing it with hardwood, the wood planks are laced in to prevent the harsh division of old and new floors. This technique requires taking up the old planks and mixing in the new ones when the floor is installed. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

“The open floor plan makes the whole house feel bigger,” Tricia says. “We can see from one end of the house to the other.” Next, they improved the kitchen’s work triangle, the flow from the kitchen sink to the appliances to food preparation areas. The small kitchen island was home to the kitchen sink and provided little workspace. Now a large table serves as an island, BEFORE (below)... When the Giannis first looked at this home,

the kitchen visually and practically. Whitewashed cabinets replace the dated oak cabinets and brighten the kitchen. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets near the oven were replaced with shorter cabinets to gain more counter space. On the adjacent wall, open shelves and drawers replaced the built-in cabinets. This also offered the opportunity to add in smaller appliances, such as a wine fridge. The refrigerator was moved to this wall and blends in with the cabinets thanks to paneled doors. With the functional issues addressed, Tricia was able to focus on the home’s decor. The light fixtures were replaced with custom chandeliers. Wilson Lighting painted the arms of the chandeliers silver to match the pewter hardware throughout the kitchen, while mosaic tiles above the range add color and pattern. The same tiles surround the fireplace in the hearth room, visually connecting the two spaces. Looking at the effortless glamour of the kitchen and hearth room now, it’s hard to believe that floral wallpaper was once the standout feature.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Kitchen Crashers Star AT THE JOHNSON COUNTY HOME & GARDEN SHOW Alison Victoria, a designer on DIY Network’s Kitchen Crashers, was the first female host of the popular Crashers series. On the show, she produces extravagant kitchen redesigns that are completed in just a few days. Originally from Chicago, Alison moved to Las Vegas for college then started her career as the youngest designer at Christopher Homes in Las Vegas. Two years later, she launched her own consulting firm, Alison Victoria Interiors. Her list of clients includes boutiques, resorts and private homes. She also has created her own line of modern furniture that is defined as both sleek and chic. Alison will be speaking on Saturday and Sunday (March 1-2) during the Johnson County Home & Garden Show at the Overland Park Convention Center. On Saturday, Alison will speak at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.; on Sunday, she will speak at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Project Manager on Curb Appeal: The Block AT THE JOHNSON COUNTY HOME & GARDEN SHOW Kimberly Lacy knows a thing or two about painting and design. She grew up assisting her mother who was an interior decorator. Her painting expertise led to her position as lead painter on the HGTV series Designed to Sell, both in Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. That role was a springboard to six successful seasons as project manager on HGTV’s Curb Appeal: The Block. Kimberly also owns and operates her own design and artisan paint company, Anatomy of Design, in Atlanta. Kimberly will be speaking at the Johnson County Home & Garden Show on Friday and Saturday (February 28 and March 1) at the Overland Park Convention Center at noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

TIMBER FRAMING

An Art Form Worth Exploring Timber framing is the century-old art of adding massive timber beams into a self-supporting structure. The timber beams are handcrafted to fit together and are exposed to view from the inside of the structure. As opposed to conventional wood-framed (stick-framed) buildings, timber frames are stand-alone structures that use fewer and larger pieces of wood. Stick framing relies on the internal walls to support the roof; in timber framing, the roof is supported with a few, well-placed timbers. In addition to being an integral structural support, this feature allows timber-framed houses to have open and light-filled rooms that flow together, unconstrained by partition walls. This gives the consumer more design possibilities and the flexibility to have a customized home suited for specific needs. Timber framing also can be integrated into the design of a hybrid structure, which utilizes timber framing and conventional construction. Most homes are split up into two different areas: primary and secondary. Primary areas are where families spend most of their time, such as the living room, kitchen, dining room and master bedroom. These areas fit well with a timber-frame design, as they are generally more open, relaxed, comfortable and family-oriented. Timber framing adds beauty to the design as well as provides structural benefits, built to last generations. In addition, it allows design flexibility to plan and create unique, open spaces, offering limitless choices for the interior (such as wood, stone or drywall) and exterior (such as brick, wood, stone or stucco). Last, timber-framed homes are energy-efficient. They are enclosed with insulated panels that wrap around the frame in a continuous envelope, with no break for studs or rafters like in conventional construction. This insulation forms an airtight casing, giving timber-framed homes increased energy efficiency and comfort. OUTDOOR LIGHTING

Light It Up! Gone are the days when outdoor lighting consisted of a single floodlight that was activated by a motion detector and lit an entire city block. Fortunately, options in outdoor lighting have increased, so there is no need to settle for anything less than safe, functional, energy-efficient and beautiful lighting. Safety is still important. Outdoor lighting deters intruders and lights up walkways to make them safer after dark. But it also allows more time to be spent in an outdoor space eating, playing, reading or entertaining. It all comes down to functionality. Technology has advanced, along with our desires, including lights that can be moved around, illumination that doesn’t blind guests sitting around a table, and tones that keep people looking like people instead of a deer caught in the headlights or ghostly creatures. Homeowners want
