Kevin and I are headed to The Outer Banks, N.C., to enjoy some time with the McGrath family, while our 1-year-old, Madeline, stays with Grandma and Grandpa Pearl, who, I think, offer an ideal vacation spot in the country. In fact, she’ll probably debut her blue-andyellow two-piece swimsuit with ruffles –– speaking of cute bathing suits! –– for the baby pool. She did, however, make a trip to Chicago with us in May to meet Great Grandma Carlson (Kevin’s grandma) for the first time. (Baby’s first flight was less than perfect, to say the least.) I’m certainly looking forward to planning future family vacations with the little one(s). (Total number of children to be determined...) Spending time around the house, however, wouldn’t be so bad if I had an outdoor living area with pool and spa like this one (story on page 46). The homeowner enjoys entertaining, if you couldn’t tell, and he’s well equipped for it. If you can’t handle an all-out exterior remodel like his, sift through our compilation of stylish outdoor living products to enhance your space. If you’re really wanting to dig in and get some work done around the house (playtime aside), we’ve got some inspiring projects that’ll knock your socks off (you don’t need them anyway). local living room, kitchen and dining room will have you drawing up remodeling plans immediately, while our other outdoor living feature is just plain fabulous, also in a modern sort of way. (It made our cover, after all.) But these are the months to enjoy as much time as you can outside, so throw an al fresco dinner party that guests won’t soon forget. See how our designers (from NFM’s The Design Gallery) created a tablescape at DIFFA’s Dining by Design that had us daydreaming about a place some consider the ultimate vacation

JILL TRAN AND CARMEN THOMAS HAVE NO trouble coming up with adjectives to describe their client’s recently remodeled home: comfortable, informal, relaxed, pretty, finished, elegant, welcoming, familyfriendly and unstuffy. But that doesn’t mean it fits neatly into any pre-existing design category. “We spent a lot of time trying to figure out their style,” Tran says. “It’s definitely traditional but fresher.”

Before (above): Stained wood paneling and a brick fireplace made an upscale impression decades ago, but a darkened, secluded living room at the center of the home was not what the new owners wanted. After: Paint and lighting do wonders for the room, making it feel larger than it did. Tran and Thomas removed the divided-light mullions on the exterior doors to increase light into the room and added crystal knobs to create continuity and add some sparkle.

Before (right): Old oak cabinets and heavy curtains didn’t do the kitchen any favors in the looks department, while low ceilings cramped and darkened the room. After: Busting out the fireplace wall and vaulting the ceiling gave the new owners the big bang they wanted for their buck. The good general layout wasn’t messed with, but an enlarged island with seating was added for convenience. Painted custom cabinets and chef-quality appliances bring the kitchen into the 21st century.

And it has come a long way since the design team, including Tran + Thomas, architect Scott Bickford and builder Cory Childress, first walked through in early 2011. The home wasn’t a complete nightmare –– the previous owner was a doctor and general and had built the house solidly with commercial-style construction. “But it was stuck in the ’70s,” the homeowner recalls. “It was well-preserved and even had clean, working avocado appliances.” The space potential, along with its Mission Hills location, sold the young couple on the house. “I liked the ranch footprint and the attic space upstairs. The kitchen ceiling was at 8 feet, but we knew we could raise it because of how the attic was positioned,” the homeowner explains. The biggest problem was a doublewide fireplace bisecting the kitchen from the living room. With a growing family, they needed a more open plan that would allow everyone to be together. The solution was to install a new fireplace on the opposite side of the living room, connecting to the play room, and remove the wall entirely. That structural change, paired with an updated color palette and materials, made a significant difference in the home’s feel. The creams, blues and greens are calming and youthful, while touches of crystal add subtle glamour. Capitalizing on the general’s sturdy foundation, Tran and Thomas selected durable, stain-resistant upholstery that will last through three kids. “It’s been well-used for a year now,”
Before (above): The original dining room shows a traditional style similar to the

home to be lived-in.”
After: Tran and Thomas had to knock out the sheetrock in order to remove all of the wallpaper, humorously calling it “petrified.” A simplified scheme of neutral paint and a trio of ornate mirrors, paired with a modern version of a crystal chandelier, takes years off the aged space.

Designed by Bickford + Co. and built by RM Standard Construction, this Leawood home is one of 128 homes nationwide promoted by TLConcepts since its inception in 2003 (the sixth in Kansas City). Each custom home spotlights industry trends, and this one is no exception. The 4,672-square-foot home features an open floor plan that includes a kitchen, breakfast nook and large great room, eliminating the need for a hearth room and formal living room. Designed with entertaining in mind, a wine room, with space for 1,200 bottles, cozies up next to the formal dining room, while a full walk-up bar is found between the great room and kitchen. A baby grand piano, which sits across from the dining room, adds glamour to the party atmosphere. An office is conveniently located off the master bedroom on the main level, while the lower level houses a full workout room and must-have man cave. Two guest bedrooms reside on the second level. The entertaining concept extends to the outdoors, with multiple entry points from the main level and master suite. The outdoor living area includes a pool, water feature, fire bowls and fire pit, which all can be seen from every room in the house. “[The homeowners] wanted a certain feel for this space, so it’ll be pretty sharp when it’s all said and done,” builder Brett Standard says. Privacy comes in the form of a wooded backdrop. While the floor plan itself offers much to talk about, it’s the eclectic interiors that will probably garner the most attention, featuring a transition between Mediterranean and contemporary: sleek lighting and plumbing fixtures, a freestanding tub in the master bathroom, and fun new looks in tile and countertops. “It’s a modern, fresh, clean look, and I’m seeing things trending that way,” Standard says. “[The homeowners] are bringing some new looks into the home and new ideas to the mix.” JULY/AUGUST 2013 |

The Gloster couches from Seasonal Concepts feature waterproof –– but not stain-proof –– fabric. In the spring, until the oak trees finish dropping their seeds, Hills keeps them covered. The Johnson County store didn’t carry the modular line locally, so she traveled to Chicago to test it. Orange is the prevailing accent color simply because “I happen to like orange and it pops against the neutrals we used in the stone,” Hills says. It became the color of choice because of the mass planting of tiger lilies to come along the back fence.

Hills wanted a sculptural piece in the yard, so Kraisinger designed the metal pergola that they took to Asheer Akram, who fabricated and painted it. Hills describes it as looking like a bird’s nest or the game Pick-Up Sticks. She also had Kraisinger include a raised bed for growing vegetables on the south side of the yard and even found orange metal tomato trellises that match her color palette perfectly. “We had gardens growing up, but I’ve never done one on my own. I’m excited about it this year,” she notes. She has reason to be pleased, with summer finally here and a glamorous outdoor living space –– in the spirit of a luxury hotel –– for enjoying it.
TOP... Rees Michael of North Star Remodel went “above and beyond” as general contractor to pull the project together, from the Geolam composite wood fencing to the boardwalk with hidden drain to this cantilevered walnut bench. ABOVE... Hills found the modern-looking stainless steel cabinets, grill and ice cooler as a package online. The two-toned limestone counters were crafted on-site on the fly. “With angles on both the horizontal and vertical planes, the mason measured, hand cut and set each stone individually for a perfect fit,” Hills says.

Story by Kimberly Winter Stern Photos by Alistair Tutton
While many people dreamed of the Caribbean’s white sand beaches and azul waters as the winter’s third snowstorm descended on Kansas City in March, one homeowner fancied the pleasures of his own backyard. As the snow piled up, the Internet entrepreneur was eager to throw one of his famous parties for friends in a newly renovated outdoor living space that — minus the white stuff — looks positively Hollywood Hills-ish. Thanks to the work of architect James Franklin, access to the spa, which used to be 30 feet from the house, is now a quick two steps from the inside. Even in a snowstorm, guests can use the spa without braving the elements. “Before, it was unappealing to use the spa during inclement weather,” the homeowner says. “Now it’s a breeze.” Franklin worked with the homeowner to transform the home’s 1980s interior into a sophisticated, sleek residence with an open floor plan and plenty of clean, straight lines. Phase two of the South Plaza project was the backyard, which had an existing kitchen and outdated materials. The completed house

homeowner’s high-octane entertaining lifestyle and personal desire for quietude after a long day. “He wanted to give this outdoor area a facelift to coincide with the interior renovation,” says Franklin, who began the initial overhaul in 2010. “He’s single, and a major requirement of the redesign both inside and out was to downplay elements of bachelorhood This South Plaza home incorporates sleek, modern design and a low-maintenance outdoor area perfect for parties and relaxation.

A glass wall at the back of the house opens so guests can freely move in and out to enjoy the heated patio surrounding the infinity edge spa or the spectacular pool, which serves as the space’s centerpiece. The effect of the dissolving boundary between inside and out offers the best of both worlds. A cabana with a concrete shower solves the issue of guests tracking water from the pool into the main house. A fully equipped outdoor kitchen boasts charcoal and permanent gas grills where chicken, seafood and the homeowner’s bacon explosion burger are prepared for hungry partiers. A concrete wall that cleverly encloses the spa area incorporates the cutting-edge and durable paper-and-resin-based Prodema siding. At one end of the dramatic space is a custom-designed fireplace, and an overhead trellis provides ample cover as a respite from the sun during the day. The slatted design allows optimum night-sky and star viewing. Alejandro Lopez of Alejandro Home Design, who masterminded the home’s interior decor, commissioned a stunning Beth Nybeck stainless steel sculpture through Weinberger Fine Art. The gleaming art installation adds a visual punch to the outdoor retreat. Contractor Brian Faust of Faust Construction collaborated with Franklin to execute the use of low-maintenance materials throughout the space. “The homeowner didn’t want to maintain a lawn, and we had to address drainage challenges,” Faust notes, “but everything needed to have a modern sensibility.” Mexican beach pebbles create an interesting visual texture and also allow rainwater to seep into the ground. Concrete planters and shrubbery comprise the property’s minimalist landscape. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

Top... The outdoor living space’s centerpiece is the dramatic pool — just steps away from the home’s interior. Above... A complete outdoor kitchen, including a permanent gas grill, is convenient for gatherings.
Partially hidden from neighbors, the homeowner’s backyard has über-privacy, thanks to a striking fence that uses horizontal wood slats. “The way the lot is situated, neighbors look down on the home,” Franklin says. “We solved the problem by tearing down the original fence and installing one that acts as a design element and doesn’t barricade the space.” As a finishing touch, outdoor lighting enhances the outdoor space’s various vignettes. “The homeowner can spotlight a certain part of the yard, depending on the type of event he’s hosting,” Faust says. “Maybe it’s just the pool he wants to accentuate or the infinity edge spa — or maybe the whole scene.” Now that winter’s snowfall is a distant memory, the South Plaza homeowner anticipates his smartly revived outdoor paradise to be a popular gathering spot. “But when next winter rolls around, I can still fully enjoy my backyard,” he says. “Even if Mother Nature is playing around.”

DESIGNING PARIS STORY BY BROOKE MCGRATH
PHOTOS BY MATT KOCOUREK
Taking inspiration from one of the most beautiful cities in the world, it was une affaire Française — a French affair — at this year’s Dining by Design.
With a theme like April in Paris, “Of course the first thing you think of is the Eiffel Tower,” says David Wilson, visual merchandiser for The Design Gallery at Nebraska Furniture Mart. The iconic symbol was the centerpiece of KCH&G’s tablescape at DIFFA’s Dining by Design. The tablescapes — inventive centerpieces — at this annual fundraising event are just as big, bold and beautiful as the efforts to raise awareness for HIV and AIDS education and prevention in the Kansas City area. To make our table stand out among many others, we went to interior designers Molly Royse and Gail Koche, along with Wilson, at NFM’s The Design Gallery, to create a setting that spoke (French) to guests. “It’s awesome to see how many interpretations of the theme there are and what local interior designers literally bring to the table,” Royse says. “It’s amazing to see the amount of creativity in this city.” The Eiffel Tower centerpiece (actually a modified floor lamp base) was adorned with 163 fresh, hand-cut red roses, while votive candles set the mood atop white-and-yellow-striped Giorgio Armani fabric that was turned into a tablecloth, which, Wilson says, brought everything together. The dining space was anchored with black leather chairs, and each place setting included black chargers with white dinner plates and napkins wrapped around one long-stemmed red rose. Like most memorable events, there was dinner, music, and La Crema wine and Patron tequila (both sponsors), which, I’m sure, led to some dancing. It was, as always, a successful and enjoyable event hosted at The Gallery in the Power & Light District, a new venue this year. If you missed out, plan to attend in 2014 — our designers already have big plans for next year. 62

This is the third house Kim and Brian Russell have bought at the Lake since 2002, but it may very well be their last. “We walked through and fell in love with it,” Kim says. “It’s a newer and better version of our old home, which was a cedar house where we raised horses.” The property is not only nostalgic for them, it’s a quaint anomaly on the block of hotel-like Mediterranean replicas, with its natural materials and deep setback among mature trees and enveloping landscape design. Dubbed the “Colorado House,” it features reclaimed wood and massive beams from an old Belgian horse farm in Merriam, Mo. The builder, Brad Brown of Archistructure, out of Omaha, Neb., “is like an artist,” Kim says. “The house has a lot of character, and we love the way it’s decorated.” So much so that the Russells didn’t make any changes after they bought it –– furniture and dishes included –– except for adding a vintage-looking freestanding tub in the master bath. That move-in-ready factor is not unusual at the Lake. “It’s wonderful because everything is all set up,” Kim says. She and Brian simply make the “doable” four-hour Inside and out, the home maintains a comfortable mix of farmhouse style and ski chalet, all while focusing on views of the water. RIGHT... drive from Springfield, Ill., and start a relaxing weekend. A busy surgeon, Brian needs the monthly visits to release stress. “The minute he drives over the bridge, his blood pressure goes down,” Kim says. “We stop at Paul’s (Supermarket) to get a few things and head to the house then try to get to JB Hooks for dinner as soon as possible. Our emphasis is to get in and have fun.”

They picked the Lake as a future homesite when Brian was in residency in Kansas. “We always heard about the Lake of the Ozarks but never had the time or money to come,” Kim says. Now that they’re in their 50s, they have more of both. “These trips are good for the soul, but they’re impossible when you have little kids,” Kim admits. The Russell clan includes four nowgrown children, the last one having graduated in May. The Villages lake house is the perfect solution for bringing them all together. At 4,500 square feet, the house sleeps 10-12 people comfortably. “It’s cozy enough that we don’t feel lost if it’s just Brian and me, but we never worry about not having enough room for everyone,” Kim says. It also has been the site of a bachelorette party as well as Kim’s high school class reunion. In addition to their “Midwest Coast” home, the Russells own a vacation home in Destin, Fla. “As we get older, we want warmer and warmer weather earlier and earlier,” Kim explains. They divide their off-time equally and enjoy each place for different reasons: boating at the Lake and deep-sea fishing in the Gulf. When retirement comes, Kim guesses they’ll probably still split their time. “But we’re Midwesterners at heart,” she says. “We’ll always want a part of that in our lives.”
A giant sliding barn door separates the main living space from the front entry and guest bedroom, adding a rustic touch.

Everyone’s favorite place to be is in front of the fireplace, “even in July,” Kim notes.

While the homeowner was occupied with taking care of her furniture, Barney, the couple’s 150-pound Rottweiler, snatched a pillow and buried it in the yard like a bone. After they recovered it, Stockwell had it cleaned, trimmed and embroidered with “Barney No” as a personal reminder to him (and his sibling, Tigger) to stay off the furniture. “Sometimes he gets up there, regardless,” the homeowner sighs. “He drives us crazy, but we couldn’t do without him.”

Even after buying outdoor furniture that she was told could simply be hosed off, a wary homeowner didn’t believe it. “I just loved it so much and worried about it getting ruined. I worked so hard to keep it covered before my husband finally said, ‘Let’s just build a room to put it in,’” she recalls. Fortunately, they had the perfect space for it: a covered patio that could be enclosed with glass. The bones were already there, allowing for a quick and easy transformation. The new room attaches to the family room and is connected by doors flanking a stone fireplace. “It blends perfectly,” the homeowner says. “It really is an extension of the house.” Vicki Stockwell, owner of Ludi & Lovie, the shop in Grove that supplied the residents with the Lee Industries Uncovered line, was integral in making the new-and-improved space a reality. Building off the casually elegant pieces the homeowner had already selected, Stockwell coordinated accessories to add vibrant pops of color. “It’s fabulous, the turquoise and gorgeous orange,” the homeowner says.

“She liked the bright, airy, lightness of it and you just hose it off,” Stockwell says of the homeowner’s pick of the Lee Industries Uncovered line. Not only does the room not even need to be hosed down, it can be used year-round: A ventless heater keeps the space warm.

ARROW ROCK AND BLACKWATER STORY BY DIANA LAMBDIN MEYER

THE CHOICE WAS PAINFUL: PUMPKIN, PECAN, APPLE, LEMON MERINGUE, BANANA cream or a dozen other choices of homemade pie –– right there in front of us within finger-lickin’ distance. A nearby table sagged under the weight of cookies: peanut butter, sugar, chocolate and butter bombs, to name a few.

At one point, more than 1,000 people lived in Arrow Rock; today only 55 people live there year-round. Blackwater boasted only 600 people in its heyday, and today 200 people still call it home.

Overseeing this delicious dilemma was 93-year-old Imogene Mersey, the chief chef at The Picket Fence, a homey little cottage open weekends only on Main Street in Blackwater, Mo. My friend Linda settled on an apple pie, fresh from Imogene’s oven, while I loaded a bag with cookies. My plan was for us to eat them on the drive back to Kansas City from this little river town, about 90 minutes east, but, well... In recent years, travelers along I-70 in central Missouri might have noticed a billboard appear for Historic Blackwater at exit 89. Although the village has been here since the late 1800s, just recently Blackwater has become a place worthy of pulling off the interstate. There’s not much to it, but what’s there is just as cute as the little gnome houses that resident Bonnie Rapp made out of dead tree stumps in her front yard. Bonnie’s murals decorate several buildings along Main Street, including the Mid-Missouri Museum of Telephone Pioneers. That’s Bonnie’s Aunt Maude depicted in the mural. Aunt Maude was a telephone operator for more than 30 years. Rapp also created the mural on the exterior of the Iron Horse Hotel, whose 10 guest rooms look an awful lot like they did in the 1880s, and each has a fun railroad name –– Marakesh Express, City of New Orleans and the locally popular Katy Trail. Even if you don’t spend the night, the Iron Horse provides one of the best dining experiences between Kansas City and St. Louis (ironhorsehotel.com, 660.846.2011). If the rooms are filled at the Iron Horse, it’s probably because a production is underway at Blackwater’s intimate little West End Theatre or, just six miles down the road in Arrow Rock, at the more well-known Lyceum Theatre, now in its 53rd season (lyceumtheatre.org, 660.837.3311). Ignore the cars, golf carts and the paved streets in Arrow Rock and the town looks almost exactly as it did in the 1830s, when travelers on the Santa Fe Trail stopped here for supplies in village mercantile stores and ate at Huston’s Tavern, considered the oldest operating restaurant west of the Mississippi. The entire town is a state historic site, and the state-operated visitors center tells you why ___ Lewis & Clark stopped here before there was a town and the Osage Indians roamed freely; three Missouri governors and artist George Caleb Bingham lived here. Yes, it’s that kind of place, one that inspires creativity, greatness

and the desire to buy out an entire bakery of homemade pies.

Who doesn’t love cheese and crackers before dinner, especially from Whole Foods Market?! (We’re talking fancy cheeses including Roth Kase Buttermilk Blue, Capricho de Cabra, ` Pecorino Romano, Gruyere and Parrano Robusto.) Foraging for the main course, Michael Foust, executive chef and owner of The Farmhouse, provided an extremely local, vegetarian dish for our May Cooking School. Impressed with what Kitchen Studio: KC had to offer, he quickly and expertly dished out his nettle polenta recipe. The dish included foraged morels, lion’s mane and king mushrooms from Wakarusa, Kan. The evening ended on a sugar high with chocolate and raspberry desserts, both made with Somerset Ridge wine.

Nettle Polenta INGREDIENTS:
1 ½ C polenta (from Crum’s Heirlooms in Bonner Springs) 1 C white wine 3 C vegetable stock 1 C Shatto cream ½ C field garlic (from Gibbs Road Farm in KCK) 1/2 C dandelion greens, chopped (from Prairie Birthday Farm in Clay County) 1 T sage (from the chef’s backyard) 1 t olive oil Fresh nettle cheese (from Green Dirt Farm in Weston) Salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS:
In a small rondo pan, sauté the garlic over medium-high heat in oil. After about 2 minutes, add wine and reduce down by 3/4. Add vegetable stock and bring to a boil. Add polenta and stir continuously with a wooden spoon. Cook for 8 minutes. Reduce to medium heat. Add cream, dandelion greens, sage and cheese and cook until done (about 15 minutes). Season with salt and pepper before serving.
In the trio of mushrooms served, the morels were foraged by the chef’s wife and brother-in-law.
Local food and wine is the ultimate pairing (Michael Foust and Cindy Reynolds agree).
