Whether it’s a bouquet of flowers from your garden, a seating area with harmonizing fabrics and accessories, or your favorite summer ensemble, some things just belong together. The spaces featured in this issue were stylishly designed — and beautifully arranged — by a slew of talented local builders, architects and designers. I spent quite a bit of time at Jack and Delores’ lavish, mostly European home, with gardens to match (shown here), inspired by the couple’s frequent international travels. New artwork, antiques and furniture pair well with favorite pieces brought over from their previous home of similar style that they loved so much. I could stand to visit every day. We haven’t had a 12-page feature in quite some time, but after visiting this home, I’m happy to share it with you in length on page 32. Another project I could daydream about spending the summer lounging around in is the Hawaiian-inspired, resort-style pool at Loch Lloyd on page 48. From the fire elements, waterfalls and fiber-optic lights to the fully equipped outdoor cabana, it’s a superb example of exceptional landscape design and, of course, showcases many of this summer’s top outdoor living trends. Results from a survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects found that the following outdoor living trends will be in high demand this year: Lighting was No. 1, followed by seating/dining areas, fire pits/fireplaces, grills and installed seating (benches, ledges, steps). Anticipated popular garden structures include terraces, patios and decks, while low-maintenance landscapes and native plants are predicted to be at the top of homeowners’ garden wish lists. KCHG & The front exterior is an immediate show-stopper. “We went heavy on the evergreens so they’ll have a year-round landscape, but the most fun plant is what Jack calls the ‘gnarly trees’ (clump redbuds) in the entry courtyard.” The curved driveway is hidden on the north side of the house, leaving all the attention to the stone façade and seasonal flower arrangements. A
fter 43 years in their Country
French “forever” home in Olathe, Jack and Delores built a European
chateau in Siena of Leawood that’s modeled after a couple of their favorite vacation spots. It’s an interesting story, really, about how the couple ended up in Leawood. Their “forever” home — with three stories, low ceilings and extensive maintenance (they had a pool and farm animals) — was no longer conducive to their age and/or traveling lifestyle, plus a passerby offered them a price they couldn’t refuse, even though the house wasn’t on the market. In search of their next home, Jack and Delores toured a cozy Italian-style floor plan designed by Architect Gerald Janssen of Elswood Smith Carlson Architects and built by Reed Fuller — and fell in love with it. “I walked in that house and said, ‘I could live here. This is the only house I could live in,’” Delores says. So they took that design and expanded on it. The 8,200-square-foot home, with five bedrooms, six full baths and two half baths, was influenced by frequent trips to Mexico and Italy, which, the couple says, have similarities in style and design. With Jack’s family from Italy and Delores’ from Germany, “our travels are where our inspiration comes from,” Delores says. “We wanted the feel of Europe.” As you walk up the flagstone steps to the stone entry tower and through the intimate courtyard to the front door, it truly feels like a “little” piece of Europe (with hints of Latin America) landed in Kansas. The great room and dining room share space — just beyond the entry — for family dinners, while the immaculate kitchen, with direct access to the

“They have a variety of covered porches, terraces and access out[side]; a flow between the interior and exterior was an important part of the design process,” Gerald says. All main rooms provide access outside via French doors, which Delores loves and keeps open most of the time. Subtle yet elegant faux painting by Mary Walker authenticates the walls and ceilings, including the Palazzo medallion stencils on the ceiling and a glamorous beaded appliqué in the powder room by the master suite. The cherry wood arched doors throughout the home were custom-made in Mexico, as were the hand-carved fireplaces (a total of six throughout the house and grounds), columns, and ornate iron gates and handrails. The beams in the ceiling were reclaimed locally from old churches and grain elevators. “I wanted quality,” Jack says. “Instead of a big home, I wanted something that didn’t look like a regular Johnson County home.” Despite the not-so-small home, the upkeep is no problem. “It’s an easy house to clean,” Jack says. “She sweeps and I mop.”

Sharing space on the lower level with a comfy living room, full kitchen and wine room (which holds about 100 bottles) is the chapel. “We both love the chapel,” Delores says. “It was supposed to be a cedar closet, but when we came back from Israel, we decided to turn it into a chapel, so we added two feet to the back.”

Though they hardly ever cook for just the two of them, the kitchen is one of Delores’ favorite spaces. After purchasing the red Lacanche range that she wanted, including a warming oven and convection oven, “I took the colors with me to Italy and matched the plate,” she says. “They painted that for me while I was there.” The range wall hides the spacious pantry, while other noteworthy details include the custom rustic dry-stacked ledgestone arched around the range and the marble island top with antique-looking pendants from Wilson Lighting.

Whether inside or out, “the home replicates antique, Tuscan architectural elements and rustic elegance of many homes in Italy,” Reed says. The covered patio is where the couple enjoys spending the evening overlooking their gardens with a glass of wine.
Delores also enjoys visiting her fairy garden at the back of the property, but the piece de resistance, as landscape designer Steve Heichel with Rosehill Gardens calls it, is the main fountain courtyard garden built around a 112-inch-tall decorative fountain that spouts water from the heads of horses, fish and lions, called “Fontina Di Torino,” a “dramatic central fountain reminiscent of the large Italian plaza fountains,” Steve says. Seen in its entirety from the kitchen window, this main garden is outlined in crushed gravel pathways with delicate pockets of formal knot and rose-cutting gardens, topiary trees and spiral junipers. “What really makes [this project] a success is that [Jack and Delores] have a passion for [the landscape],” Steve says. “It’s not just for show, they enjoy it; this is their vision of Italy in Kansas City.” Jack and Delores “caved in on the gardening,” as Jack puts it, with monthly help from Rosehill Gardens, but he and Delores also spend time pulling weeds and dead-heading when needed. Mature evergreens create a privacy screen around the property, while classic 18th-century garden benches and quaint seating areas are purposefully placed throughout the gardens, perhaps to daydream about places far away. Though Jack and Delores soon will be on the go again, visiting their favorite international locales, they always return home, a final destination that was custom-made just for them. “We didn’t build it for anyone other than Delores and I and our family,” Jack says. “It’s really built [for] the way we want to live. We said if we ever moved, this is the way it would have to be, and this is exactly what we wanted.” PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

The formal fountain courtyard garden was originally designed to include a pool, but Jack and Delores decided against the extra maintenance, opting for the big fountain instead, which they found at Van Liew’s. “It looks like an Italian garden,” Delores says. “We went pretty original with the pebbles and everything.” The 12-foot pool that Massarelli’s fountain sits in includes underwater lighting to make it glow at night. When building the home, a huge crane was needed to lift the fountain over the house.

LOGGING MILES BACK AND FORTH to their lake house and being away from family and friends started to wear on one Loch Lloyd couple. “We were driving down every weekend in the summer and weren’t spending time with our kids and city friends because we were always gone,” the wife says. So they decided to sell that second home and make their primary residence one that would still give them that getaway feel. They wiped out a lavishly landscaped patio to put in a resortquality pool. The couple loves to travel and to visit their vacation home in Sarasota, Fla., but it was a trip to Kona, Hawaii, that inspired them to rethink their situation. There, the wife saw leaf-shaped loungers partially submerged on a pool reef ledge that became the spark of imagination for a whole new look and lifestyle. “You could lie in them and stay cool but not be totally in the water,” she describes. Those chairs came from Dedon, which specializes in unusual outdoor furniture, and these homeowners wanted a pool that was unusual to go with them.

This home is situated high on a bluff at The Village of Loch Lloyd. The five-year-old home, built by Evan-Talan Homes, already had a luxurious covered lanai with fireplace off the back of the house and a waterfall cascading down the slope of the property. The side yard offered the best solution for connecting the living spaces and adding a pool house. “We knew how we wanted it to lay on the lot, and we didn’t want a basic rectangle or kidney-shaped pool,” the wife says. The homeowners took their ideas to Landscape Architect Kurt Kraisinger of LORAX Design Group to draw them up. “From the concept and first sketch to completion, the design hardly changed,” Kurt says. These homeowners are the “decisive type” and spent more time at the drawing board so they could stick to a plan. The design is intricate with intriguing levels, layers and features. An upper pool was included especially for the grandkids, ages 1, 3, 6 and 9. It has a shallow 18-inch depth for splashing around in and LEDs on the bottom that look like stars when lit at night. “It’s playful,” Kurt describes. “The optic component turns different colors.”

Stepping stones separate this space and create a bridge to an isolated island where more lounge chairs overlook the scene from a higher perch. Just in front of it, a transitional area filled with river rocks hosts four gas igniters that spread flames a foot wide on the water. “I hadn’t seen this in Kansas City before, but I’ve since incorporated it into other projects,” Kurt says. The fire dances far enough away from the kids’ pool to be safe and close enough to the main pool to reflect light across it. A fog system in this area is another wow feature. “The waterfall pulls the fog into the lower pool,” Cory says. The husband was “all about the fun stuff,” Cory adds, but it had to be the “right” fun stuff. “I don’t do kitschy stuff like pop jets –– that has to be for the right pool,” Kurt says. “This is a landscape pool; it’s not for recreation, it’s for leisure.” The main pool is 1,100 square feet with a depth of 3-6 feet. “They want to be able to stand up and talk,” Kurt says. Kansas limestone seats are submerged along the edges of the pool for sitting. An infinity edge at the far end suits this pool’s long nature and high-up location. “Plus, it creates white noise to close off sound from the golf course," Cory says. The end nearest the house features the reef ledge, the element that started it all, for the couple and for most pool buyers today. “Reef ledges are the No. 1 thing we see in pools now. It’s the most-used portion of the pool,” Kurt comments. Oklahoma sandstone around the pool matches the house, and it’s a seamless look without any interruptions in material. “I’m not a fan of seeing drains,” Kurt says, “so we created little openings in the patio that drain underneath. We want to keep everything as natural as possible.” Weathered limestone “holey boulders” on the edging and tropical potted plant material soften the hardscape. A gas fire pit was incorporated into a corner, using glass slag rather than wood or stones, for added ambiance. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

The pool house was built last, but “it looks like it’s always been there,” Cory says, noting the same materials used on the main house. “None of it looks like an add-on.” Bifold doors open up two sides of the structure for easy access in and out. “The flow of it works well for parties,” the wife says. A full kitchen and bath keep the necessities close at hand; bar tables and a sound system increase enjoyment of the space. “This place, at night, with the lighting and fire pit, it couldn’t look any better,” Cory says. Aesthetics and functionality combined are at the core of this pool’s design, but it was the original idea of being closer to loved ones that is at its heart. “So many families are seeing their kids slipping away,” Kurt says. “They don’t want to lose the opportunity of having a pool while the kids are young.” Obviously, these homeowners are among likeminded thinkers. And they’re getting the most out of every minute of their decision to bring activity and adventure to their back door rather than down a stretch of highway. The pool, both heated and cooled, is open April through October, so their entertainment abilities span from Kentucky Derby soirees in the spring to football game gatherings in the fall. During summer, the couple uses the pool every day, taking a swim when they get home from work and inviting over those friends and family they missed so much driving to the lake on the weekends. “It’s like having a resort in our own backyard,” the wife says. “The way our lot is, it doesn’t feel like anyone is around us. It’s our own little oasis at home.”

An Overland Park bungalow features a fearless marriage of color and chic. From the top to the bottom and every inch in between, a 1950s bungalow in Overland Park has maximized its square footage into a bold statement. Designer Nichole Loiacono worked with homeowner Erin Zirbel on her home, transforming the space with two primary goals in mind: to show the value of vintage and to highlight the idea that contrast oftentimes can create the most cohesion. Describing the design as “colorful, fun and free,” Nichole took her initial cues from Erin, whom she describes as fashionable and quirky. While Erin says she provided some input with photos and inspiration from blogs and magazines, she essentially gave Nichole free reign. “I don’t recall a single idea that I wasn’t on board with that she proposed,” Erin says. The end result manages to both honor the historical integrity of the home as well as embody a vibrant display of whimsical touches. In the living room, the couch was the starting point for the design. Erin already had the couch reupholstered and refurbished (which had belonged to her husband’s grandmother), and the shape and scale of the piece was an ideal anchor for the center wall. The black and white quatrefoil pattern is offset by bright fuchsia and navy blue throw pillows. The muted color of the main wall behind the couch provides the perfect backdrop for a colorful gallery of assorted framed prints. Showcasing Erin’s personal tastes and interests, the collage creates an immediate visual impact, with evidence of discerning placement of each frame. In front of the couch, Nichole placed a gilt wheat sheaf table. The vintage piece –– the same kind made famous by Coco Chanel –– features a round glass tabletop with a bundle of wheat splayed out on the bottom that serves as its legs. “It’s classic, adds glamour that [Erin] was looking for and dresses up the space,” The pink vintage chandelier and unique horse design of the chairbacks capture both class and character in this small eat-in area.

the personality of the homeowner,” Nichole says. Throughout the home, there are numerous nods to Erin’s love of animals. The collage of prints in the living room features a bespectacled French bulldog; a framed flamingo keeps watch on one kitchen wall; and intricate horse engravings adorn the back of the wood chairs in the dining nook. The home’s design also plays with elements of seeming contradiction in surprising ways. For example, in just the small dining area alone, Nichole paired the stark white walls against the deep brown hue of the chairs for a dramatic contrast. The vertical lines of the beadboard also complement the horizontal lines of the wooden chairs. A pink glass Murano chandelier –– another vintage piece –– hangs above the dining table, creating a feminine lightness against the weight of the chairs. It’s evident that decisions to use color were deliberate and carefully considered –– even when it’s noticeably absent. The minimal look in the kitchen is achieved by the white appliances and cabinetry. Erin didn’t change the white cabinets after she moved in and chose appliances with a retro finish. This nod to the home’s past melds effortlessly with the addition of a glass backsplash in shades of cool blues. In the master bedroom, Nichole selected a moss green color for the textured walls. “It turned out beautifully because of the matte of the wall and gloss of the trim; it gives a nice effect looking at different sheens,” she notes. This room is the designer’s favorite in the home because of standout pieces like the gold, ornate headboard and an effortlessly eclectic combination of textures that pairs a woven plaid rug with animal print bedding. “When I was working on the Townsends’ space, Barbara’s description of what she wanted was dreamy and whimsical, so that was my goal,” Kelly says. “The white mandevilla draping down the sides seem to give it the dreamy look, in my opinion.” The current color scheme for the plants is red, pink and white, which contrasts the shades of blue seen in the furniture, painted ceiling and decor. Red calibrachoa with tons of showy blooms, a little English ivy and tons of red Knock Out roses surround the exterior of the house. Another standout feature of the Townsends’ outdoor space is the tall emerald green arborvitaes that circle the pool and are made to resemble columns. “We didn’t want them to hide any of the beautiful views of the lake...when inside the house, you see right over the top of them,” Kelly explains. In their free time, the couple stays busy enjoying those views from their home, occasionally boating and entertaining. After 19 years of living in the space, the outdoor addition has really added to the Townsends’ home and lifestyle. “It’s a lovely place to have a cup of coffee in the morning or to have an alfresco dinner and watch the sunset,” Barbara says. “We really enjoy spending time out there.”

Highway 125, Monkey Island), which underwent a $20 million renovation two years ago, features Summit Restaurant for fine dining and Buffalo Bar for a more casual setting. Denise Whitson, Summit’s food and beverage director, recommends the orange roughy, popular on Summit’s summer menu, paired with a glass of Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc. members only but is always open to visits from prospective members. The Club features local farm-to-table fare, such as lamb from an Amish farm, Oklahoma City-raised beef, and fresh, seasonal herbs grown on-site. Karen loves the warm, neutral look, but she’s also done beach themes and is working on an industrial-style home. “The different homes help me get all my decorating tastes out,” says Karen, a preschool teacher. “Each one has its own character.” This particular house stood empty for a couple of years and developed moisture problems before the Werners bought and revamped it. “We wanted it bright and cheerful,” Karen says. Her inspiration started with the large picture of koi displayed in the dining area, where two square tables pushed together are set diagonally. “It adds drama,” John explains. “I like to use a lot of angles.” A weathered granite fireplace surround makes another dramatic focal point in the living room. Texture, natural materials and original artwork also draw the eye. “A collection of unusual items makes the decor,” John says. “We tried to find a few wow factors.” For Karen, though, the real wow factor is the water, and the outdoors is the best place to be. “We live on the boat dock,” she says. While the home is listed as having only three bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths, it can support 25 people at once, like it did this Memorial Day weekend. “The more, the merrier,” Karen says. “You don’t have to be invited, just show up.” But that open invitation ends September 16, when it becomes some other family’s special retreat, if only for a while. Food and drink start their journey to your belly a little closer to home.

A caprese salad changed how Executive Chef John Biggs does things at Old Kinderhook. The tomato in it looked perfect and deep red, but it tasted far from what a tomato was supposed to taste like. “We can do this better,” he stated at the time and partnered with the resort’s golf course superintendent last year to till up a quarter acre of land on the property for a vegetable garden that supplies produce for two on-site restaurants. The garden grows everything from herbs to eggplant and especially heirloom tomatoes. “I’m surprised by how good it all is,” John says. “It’s some of the best-quality food I've ever eaten, and it has changed me into a vegetable eater.” On a national scale, John isn’t the only one to realize that locally grown, in-season produce tastes better, but he’s definitely on the forefront at the Lake. “Everything we do here is about five years behind,” he says. “We’re stuck in a corporate agriculture business model,” adds Nathan Bechtold, the market coordinator of the Osage Beach Farmers Market. But he has employed an “if you build it, they will come” attitude, organizing a handful of vendors to set up tables on Saturdays May through October at the Stone Crest Mall off Old Highway 54. Now in its third year, the market’s strength is meat (grass-fed and heritage breed cattle, along with bison) and dairy, plus seasonal produce and even specialty items from regular homeowners who have an abundance of, say, cherries from trees in their yard. Nathan says that the Lake area has typically purveyed fresh-grown goods at roadside stands and through grocery stores and that this is the first coordinated effort in one of the largest cities in the area. The location helps bring locals and tourists together in support of locally grown, pesticide-free food. “I love it and believe in it,” he says. Beverages also are going local at the Lake, with Shawnee Bluff Winery and Horseshoe Bend Brewery opening up in the last two years. Chris Case, a chef by trade and home brewer, was entering competitions and winning. “People told me I should step it up,” he recalls. So he became an official brewmaster in an old firehouse within The Village of Four Seasons, where he and wife, Carrie, brew different craft beers and do pairings for private events. In an area connected to beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev, the small start-up is holding its own. A wood-fired pizza is a favorite draw for many patrons. While his ingredients aren’t sourced locally, the lake’s water, used in the process, uniquely flavors the beer. It’s all part of creating a taste that represents all the Lake has to offer –– the best of nature.
