Nothing symbolizes good design better than the timeless Herman Miller Eames chair. Imagine it in a chic living room within a home that revolves around high-end design. In this issue, our focus is on projects that feature superior design and architecture — and we know good design when we see it. It’s easy to tell when a space has received a little extra love and attention. In a home or individual room designed for its owners, every detail, no matter how big or small, has a specific purpose and/or function, whether it’s an entirely new floor plan or creative, customsized windows in the kitchen. Our contemporary Kansas City house on page 40 features both — and everything in between. (We can’t wait for you to see it!) Other inspiring architectural and design features found in this issue include a highly sophisticated entertainment/storage wall (page 21), durable bluestone pavers used in a curved stairway down to a cozy outdoor living area (page 32), and inventive built-in cabinetry that hides a much-

KC & HG DESIGN DETAILS TEXT BY BROOKE MCGRATH PHOTO BY MATT KOCOUREK

This project, like many others, began with an inspiring magazine photo and one big, white wall. The newly retired owners of this Plaza condo wanted to maximize every inch of space, which meant designing an aesthetically pleasing storage/entertainment unit to include their 60-inch TV. “They wanted something that was asymmetrical and made a statement in the room, says designer Genevieve Hamel, AKBD, with Kitchens by Kleweno. Pieced together like a puzzle, frameless Neff cabinetry, with a pearl metallic finish on 21 white cabinet fronts, now steals the show. Three of the seven open-shelving units are put on display with puck lights, including the sculpture corner. (A majestic statue is coming soon.) Finishing touches include electronic setup by Integrated Electronics and designer accessories such as the Herman Miller Eames chair and ottoman. MAY/JUNE 2014 |

POOLS Today’s pool designs ditch the standard in favor of (splashy) sophistication, with an eye

functional outdoor experience. Customized for comfort and designed to accommodate an increasing desire for outdoor living and playing, here are some of the biggest trends in pools this year.

MARRYING THE INDOORS AND OUTDOORS Bringing the indoors to the outdoors remains a strong tenet of pool design. A perfect marriage of the two is best achieved with a more natural environment. David Ashby, designer at Blue PHOTO COURTESY OF BANKS BLUE VALLEY POOL & SPA

Haven Pools & Spas, says seamless integration is key so that the overall design shows a “body of water that belongs there rather than just a concrete pond.” Using materials like flagstone and adding landscaping by the pool can soften and break up the concrete look. While fire pits remain a popular way to evoke that classic fire and ice combination, adding functional elements also fulfills the need to bring the party to the poolside –– from the culinary (grill station) to cocktails (fully equipped bars). A pool is only as functional as its frequency of use, which explains why David says there’s a move away from diving pools and more toward sports pools. Shallow at both ends and deeper in the center, a sports pool can better accommodate volleyball and other games in the water. “When you open up shallow spots, which are where people typically congregate, it allows you to take full advantage of the pool,” he says.

ALL THAT SPARKLES Alternative materials can dramatically enhance your outdoor space. Roger Banks, owner of Banks Blue Valley Pool & Spa, says there is a trend toward incorporating materials like glass tiles, travertine stone, pebbles and beads to pool areas. These elements can create a striking effect and be incorporated into the interior of pools, borders, steps, ledges and other raised areas. Used liberally or sparingly, these materials can add a splash of color, visual interest or dimension to your pool design.

ENGINEERS DON’T SKIMP ON STRUCTURE. Not on the job and, for Ray Kowalik, president and general manager of Burns & McDonnell’s Energy Group, not in his own backyard. He and his wife, Jill, recently added on major outdoor entertaining space to their Lee’s Summit home, including an upper suspended concrete deck and lower covered lanai, plus a 60- by 20-foot patio. After a trip to Las Vegas, the couple had that city’s sumptuous scale in mind and wanted to upgrade their muddy patio and sagging wood deck to something safe, accessible, luxurious and appropriate for hosting colleagues and clients. They relied on the professional trio of landscape architect Richard “Rick” Clayton Barrett, installation contractor Maverick Pickering, and stone supplier and fabricator Sturgis Materials to meet their expectations of a high-quality, long-lasting outdoor space. “Anytime you build something to last –– flagstone over concrete, frost footings for walls, etc. –– you are making an investment in the future,” Rick says. “Commonly, the costs of doing it well cause us to have to value-engineer certain aspects of the project. That didn’t happen here. Some clients don’t really care about the details of footings, rebar or electrical conduits, but Ray was interested in it and understood it, so communicating details to him made him understand our dedication to doing it correctly.” With the house situated on 15 acres of wooded property, the team first had to move the septic system then install lots of large footings to support a five-foot drop-off into the forest. Rick’s design incorporated a fireplace, fountain and built-in grill spaced between separated stone benches that allow water to drain. A lighted, curved path spills magnificently down 40 feet from the driveway to behind the house.

PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

The overall design was an extension of the interior for outdoor entertaining and enjoyment. “A significant part of a great project is great clients,” Rick says. “When you work well with a team, including the clients, your chances of producing a spectacular project increase dramatically.” Left... “The simple lines, forms and function are a clean, neat addition to the original architecture,” Rick says.

and a 24/7 lifestyle decided to transform their 1924 home perched on a verdant lot in the lush environs of Kansas City’s iconic Loose Park, the result was Marilyn Monroe meets the girl next door. The well-edited remodel is characterized by carefully chosen, stunning design elements, such as a sleekly elegant ET2 blown-glass chandelier above the kitchen table and Edge lights illuminating a museum-quality island. A custom iron staircase echoes a linear line repeated throughout the space, while artisan cabinetry in the chef-friendly kitchen by craftsman Ian Byrne underscores a modern, vibrant aesthetic. But there’s plenty of warmth in this ode to impeccable design because of the collaborative efforts of an A-team that the homeowners assembled to bring their vision to life while meeting a strenuous six-month schedule. One member of the experienced trio of professionals was Andrew Homoly, LEED, AP, Master CGP and owner of Homoly Signature Homes. Tapped for his innate ability to build heirloom homes, his biggest challenge in the Loose Park redux was structural. “We needed to tie into the home’s existing 90-year-old foundation, which turned out to be a true engineering feat,” says Andrew, a civil engineer. Another member of the team charged with accomplishing a thoughtful, fluid renovation was architect John M. Wind, AIA, a principal with Piper-Wind Architects. “No matter what residential project I’m working on, the end result must benefit the homeowners’ lifestyle,” he says. “And protecting the integrity of this lovely, established neighborhood was important, too — we didn’t want the house to suddenly become an anomaly, calling attention to itself.” Stephanie

Abramson,

ASID,

says

the

breathtaking use of materials grounds the space and gives it depth, as evident in the white four-inch-thick Silestone countertop on the kitchen island that beautifully contrasts with dark metal trim on windows and doors and the dark cabinets and oak floors. “The homeowners had a crystal-clear vision of what they wanted,” Stephanie says. “All of us on the team had the same vision — clean, modern, sexy. We achieved this in many ways but especially with the tonal feeling of the space, which makes you feel completely comfortable and at ease the moment you walk in.” PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

The high-quality combination of building, architecture and design allows details to pop without overwhelming one element. The home’s brick-and-stucco exterior was painted to a monochromatic scheme. A new three-car detached garage with a guest suite for out-of-town family and friends was built, along with a kitchen and breakfast room, family room and cabana. “This space is connected with floor-to-ceiling glass,” John explains. “Directly off the breakfast room is the limestone patio terrace with a pergola.” Bringing the outdoors in without feeling overexposed was essential to the homeowners. “The sliding glass doors in the sunroom and cabana let natural light stream in and lends an airy and relaxed feeling,” Stephanie says. Two linear windows in the kitchen — a large one on the west-facing wall and a smaller one on the east wall — encourage light to flood the space. The large window serves a dual purpose: the homeowners can keep an eye on their kids’ activity in a courtyard play area outfitted with a basketball goal and low volleyball net. The windows are offset by Carrara marble and stainless steel stacked tile to flow with the long, linear design. The kitchen, although immersed in impeccable style, is a workhorse. Appliances include a 48-inch Wolf dual-fuel six-burner range with a griddle, a Sub-Zero 48-inch glass-front refrigerator that keeps snacks easily accessible, and a Sub-Zero 27-inch glass-front wine refrigerator with two lower drawers stocked for casual family dinners and frequent parties. system and dishwasher, a Sharp microwave drawer and a Hoshizki built-in icemaker to complete an enviable suite of power tools for the homeowners. A 30-inch pro Thermador warming drawer under a 30-inch Thermador pro double convection oven was installed in the pantry to accommodate catering and entertaining. The outdoor space has the distinct flavor of a five-star resort, including an inviting pool encased in limestone, an outdoor kitchen, lush landscaping, seating and dining areas and the backdrop of the home’s glass walls. The entire area emulates the crisp and clean ambiance of the home’s interior, accented with an unmistakable sexy undertone. Behind the scenes is complex wiring that satisfies the homeowners’ demand for high-tech gadgets and accessories. In the end, this ambitious remodel blueprint was brought to life. “What was originally a 15-month project was compressed into six months,” Andrew says. “It was a challenge that John, Stephanie and the rest of the crew were up to meeting — and we worked together like a well-oiled machine to carry out the homeowners’ objective of architecture and design working in harmony.” Next up on the homeowners’ to-do list is a second-floor remodel. Chances are it will complement its predecessor’s patina, thanks to artfully conceived architecture and design.

A living room transformation went from ‘too cobalt blue’ to a ‘light and airy’ family favorite. Story by Brooke McGrath | Photos by Matt Kocourek

k

elli Andresen and Cole Martin’s Leawood

living room wasn’t always this pretty.

A couple of years ago, the family gathered in a

space surrounded by stark-white walls and cobalt blue in the form of a faux-painted ceiling inset, couch, and fireplace tile surround and hearth — that matched the former kitchen counters. In order to make it into a cozy, relaxing space for all, they called in reinforcements. “We wanted something a little more modern and different from everybody else,” Kelli says. Incorporating the family’s own furniture pieces (and favorite turquoise vase), contractor Deb Hudacek, owner of D.P. Hudacek Contracting, and designer Kelly Lankford, ASID, LEED AP, president of KHL Design Studio, reinvented the living room. New throw pillows set the stage for the room’s color palette. Within the clean, functional lines of the new Euro-style cabinetry, white open shelves with light blue-painted backs pop off the pale gray walls. On the other side of the refaced gas fireplace is a concealed desk — with plenty of leg room — replacing an unused wet bar. The double-sided saltwater aquarium also received a makeover: updated cabinetry with stainless steel accents to match the new mantle. But everyone agrees that the most impressive design elements in the space above... Cole and Kelli wanted a neutral, modern main level with pops of color. Different from the dining room and its red ceiling, pale blue creates a soothing atmosphere in the family room.

The reframed fireplace wall features a floating concrete hearth and sleek metal mantle, designed by Kelly, with a floor-toceiling limestone surround, one of the first design details drawn up for the new space that the homeowners loved. “The changes at the fireplace wall were the most significant, leaving the ’80s behind and creating a wonderful focal point as you step into the home,” Deb says. The dainty ceiling tattoo of cherry blossom branches with a few scattered butterflies is almost like a tree canopy over the room, Kelli says. “We wanted the ceiling to act [as though it’s] a skylight to the sky,” Kelly adds. “I think it makes one of the biggest design impacts in the room.” Finishing touches include new Roman shades for sunny days and a framed ink portrait of an actual fish caught by Cole’s mom in 1967 (the year he was born) and later given to him as a gift. “Often when I get home, Kelli is warming herself by the fire and our four-year-old is hiding underneath the floating hearth waiting to be found,” Cole says. That’s what a true family room is all about.

Endless Summer Regardless of the season, every day spent at this cheerful Grand Lake condo is warm and inviting. Call it instinct or simply knowing something’s a good fit. Without much provocation, one Oklahoma couple decided to buy a condo on Grand Lake. The impulse was well-directed, according to the wife. “My husband loves to fish, and we’ve always had a fondness for Grand Lake.” The latter is grounded by the fact that this couple previously owned a home in the area in the mid-90s. After selling, they realized they still longed to own a place at the lake. “Fact is, I missed it,” says the wife, who admits going to the lake is as comforting as a family gathering, something the couple fostered with their two grown daughters and four grandchildren. When a condo became available in the gated community of Pointe Marin, the homeowners didn’t hesitate. “What I had in mind was a comfortable, beautifully designed space,” says the wife, acknowledging her good fortune after finding a home decor and interior design shop called Ludi & Lovie in Grove. Falling in love with the shop prompted the homeowner to meet with owner Vicki Stockwell. “I appreciated my client’s enthusiasm, and she trusted me to take on the project,” Vicki says.

A Buoyant Attitude Located on the second floor, the condo’s vista was compelling, a factor Vicki would incorporate during the design process. During the ensuing months, Vicki pulled together a sunny color scheme featuring sea mist green, brown, orange, navy and white. Delving into the project, which spanned six months, no major glitches surfaced, though finding just the right shade of paint for the living room walls was initially problematic. “Because the reflections bouncing off the lake were so dramatic, they cast different shades against the walls,” Vicki explains. After sampling many quarts of paint, they chose a soft sea mist. Vicki’s task needed a critical eye to ensure a comfortable yet functional interior. Dressing the living room, she used a jute-and-wool rug to anchor the conversation area accented by a custom sectional covered in brown cotton-blend fabric. Complementing the sofa, she placed two sea-green leather swivel chairs separated by a mother-of-pearl table. While the homeowner loves the layout of the condo’s single-level main living spaces and three bedrooms, the children’s bunk room is her favorite. It is a kid magnet. Vicki outfitted the room with bright bands of wall coloring and a punchy green desk. “There’s even a basket holding different colored sleeping bags for each child,” she says. As the couple reflects on the finished condo, they are delighted with the results. “I have to say Vicki’s sharp eye and design expertise won me over,” the wife says. It seems no matter what the season, for this family, it’s always another day in paradise. 68

KC & HG GRAND LAKE EVENTS

Summer Lovin’

TEXT BY DIANA LAMBDIN MEYER

Summer in Kansas City means at least one weekend getaway to Grand Lake in northeast Oklahoma. With a speedy three-hour drive south and so many good things going on, you might just have to schedule two or three getaways.

June: 14 –– Cherokee Heritage Festival, Har-ber Village, Grove. This pioneer village is a wonderful outing any time you visit the lake area, but the second Saturday of June, members of the Cherokee Nation and other tribes share their culture and customs through

National Hydroplane Races PHOTO COURTESY OF GRAND LAKE ASSOCIATION

storytelling, basket weaving, dances and more. 14 –– Spring Fest, downtown Grove. It’s the last weekend before summer officially begins, so the downtown streets are closed off to welcome 140 craft and food booths, music and good times. 20-22 –– National Hydroplane Races, Wolf Creek Park, Grove. This is the second year for these high-speed, light-weight boats zipping across the lake in competition for cash prizes and bragging rights. About 50 boats from across the country are expected.

July: 4 –– Fourth of July. Find special events in communities all around the lake, including Wolf Creek Park, Grove; River View Park, Miami; Har-ber Village, Grove; and Bernice Nature Center.

Big Bash Bass

12 –– Boater Safety Class, GRDA Education Center, Langley.

PHOTO COURTESY OF GRAND LAKE ASSOCIATION

Make sure your lake getaway is accident-free with this free class. 19-20 –– Big Bash Bass. Sponsored by Anglers in Action, this weekend of fishing offers $100,000 in prize money.

August: 9 –– Big Bobber Drop. An airplane filled with 12,000 fishing bobbers, each numbered to coordinate with donations by area merchants, flies low over the lake, dumping these prize-winning bobbers. Grab a jet ski, pontoon, sail boat or speed boat and scoop up winnings that include cash, free meals, oil changes and ice cream, among other goodies.

Right... A reef ledge creates levels of entry and use, such as just a toe languidly dangling into the coolness over the edge of a chaise.

PORK

For our April Cooking School event, the delicious smell of bacon wafted about The Cooking Studio at Whole Foods, thanks to Taste Catering’s Executive Chef Chris Graham and his five-course menu, which he prepared with ingredients from Whole Foods Market. From bacon bits to bacon bowls and candied bacon, each dish featured — you guessed it — some form of the popular cut. Each course was paired with a different wine from the Somerset Wine Trail; Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery, NightHawk Winery, White Wind Farms and Middle Creek Winery all shared award-winning wines.
