1 ONCE AGAIN BUILDERS, ARCHITECTS, DESIGNERS, SUBCONTRACTORS, AND ALL other industry professionals and guests gathered together for KCH&G’s 2012 Home of the Year awards ceremony at Factory Direct Appliance on Tuesday, March 27. Partygoers enjoyed appetizers and a buffet from Brancato’s Catering, wine from Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery, and live music from the Tom Penderblast Quartet (and, yes, a little karaoke at the end of the night). Most important, ticket proceeds from this year’s event benefited the Love Fund for Children. Thanks to all of our winners, judges, presenting sponsors and vendors for another successful competition and event!

Reaching New Heights Story by Brooke Pearl

When it comes to welcoming guests into their home, nothing says “hello” quite like this designer staircase. BUT A WARM WELCOME TURNS COLD IF AN entry features an unsafe, chunky and outdated structure, like with Stan and Tommye Sexton’s former staircase. The Sextons purchased their 1970s home, located off Wornall Road in KCMO, last year after realizing they needed more space than their townhouse, just south of the Plaza, offered. After touring the home for the first time, it was evident that the staircase, part of the original home, garnered the most attention for an immediate update. Contemporary is the word that Tommye uses to describe their sense of style, and the existing staircase was just the opposite, with its dated wood frame and missing handrail on one side. Plus, and maybe more important, it wasn’t code-compliant. “It is in the center of the house, so it was important to us that it looked good, was safe and contemporary,” she says. In more technical terms, “it was out of level and out of plumb,” says architect Rick McDermott, owner of RDM Architecture. “We had to take the ceiling out below and reinforce the floor joist.” (The second floor also was out of level, but in the opposite direction of the first floor, further complicating the implementation.) In addition, the landing was reframed, and the living room floor, which is a step up from the entryway, was pushed back. The floating glass staircase is more transparent, opening up the entire room. “The simplicity of the stairs is a testament to quality craftsmanship and well-executed design through dedicated teamwork,” says Matt Lero, also with RDM Architecture. And it fits flawlessly with the homeowners’ style. The Sextons couldn’t be happier with their new “welcome,” but reassurance from friends is always appreciated: “Whatever it cost, it was worth it.” And they couldn’t agree more.

Its structural brick gave them a good start, and they increased their R-value with new windows and bio-based, closed-cell foam on the roof for a tight building envelope. The home now has a HERS rating of 69; 0 is considered the best, and most new and existing homes range in the 100s. The home’s 1,236 square feet of space cost about $130 a month in utilities and it’s comfortable. “There are no drafts or cold spots. It’s the same temperature all over the house,” Krygiel adds. He spent extra money to zone the upstairs and downstairs separately because there was no space for a chase. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

The home was certified Silver in the LEED for Homes program without much extra thought nor the expense often associated with building green and became the first certified home in Kansas City, Mo. Aiming for certification was a no-brainer. As a LEED-accredited commercial architect, Krygiel knew the tenets of the program and only had to modify them for residential. He also held another advantage. The first points are for meetings to discuss the design process. “Since I’m the architect and the homeowner, I could have that discussion pretty quickly and

Krygiel and Meyer call the kitchen the media center because they have no television in the house and everyone pitches in to make dinner. Handmade ravioli and gnocchi are favorites, and the girls especially like brick-roasted chicken. “There have been plenty of times we’ve had all five burners going at once,” Krygiel comments.

The goal for the well-used kitchen was to keep seasonal storage up high near the ceiling and day-to-day utensils out in view. During demolition, they found out the chimney was unsupported by anything other than the floor when it collapsed, so they called it a “nice mistake,” added some beams and opened up the space. The end cap of the island marks the chimney’s former location. The couple salvaged many materials, reusing studs and keeping the original hardwood floors in place upstairs. They updated wiring and plumbing

They also upped their MERV filter to more efficiently remove particles and improve indoor air quality. Krygiel researched alternative energies such as solar and wind but neither worked for the site. Where they earned the majority of points for their Silver certification is in location, energy efficiency and material reuse (they used only 1.5 dumpsters). The northernmost perimeter of the property is a verdant backdrop of chokeberry, yellow twig dogwood, viburnum interspersed with screening witch hazel, incense cedar, spruce and juniper. Mid-garden, Sorensen created a 44-foot brick pathway lined with white wax begonias in the summer and grape hyacinths in the spring. This signature element reaches across the entire expanse of the garden, providing not only a clear sight line but leading the eye toward a 10-foot metal arch surrounded by low-growing and climbing annuals and perennials. Opposite, a sloping bed alongside the home brims with a thicket of shade-loving hosta, white buds, magnolia, lilies, hydrangea and wood anemones, among others. Amidst the lush profusion, stepping stones lead upward to what the homeowners call Phase II, a lot that once belonged to an elderly widow. They deconstructed the home after her passing and memorialized “Katie’s Garden” with a stone marker and inspired plantings. The transition between the two properties was also inspired, with Sorensen joining them with a bullnose brick and bluestone staircase. “We mimicked the established brick pathway in Phase I with a complementing 55-foot oyster shell path in Phase II,” Sorensen describes. “Lined with dwarf allium and daylilies, the path is the perfect visual terminating at the ‘gardenbelle.’”

Above... The patio opens up to Mazus, a creeping ground cover peeking between bluestone stepping stones. An 18-inch pierced brick wall is topped with succulents, scented geranium and stone troughs. A pergola with swing and small pond additionally enhance the patio as well as a gurgling bubbler surrounded by old-fashioned coral bells, ajuga and a boxwood hedge. Left... Welcoming guests to the front door are tulips in the spring and the wild garden of larkspur, feverfew and poppy seed in the summer. 48 • KCHANDG.COM

On either side of the double gate (blooming with polka-dot climbing roses), a dry creek bed was created to solve a drainage problem. The Chippendale fence is the perfect backdrop for a drought-resistant garden, with two sculptural obelisks or “tuteurs” that will eventually be covered with purple and white clematis.

The Simplicity of Summer Stay up late, sleep in and take some time off. The Lake of the Ozarks is a mecca for second-home buyers, but to really make it feel like a stylish retreat, take some cues from our featured condo or advice from area designers on trends for the home. It’s time to let your design spirit run free __ then you can kick up your feet, grab an umbrella drink and revel in the confines of (or on the boardwalk leading to) your fashionable vacation home.

As work on the kitchen began, however, the project quickly spread throughout the nearly 3,400-square-foot condo that boasts “The layout of our building is unique because it’s where two buildings come together,” the homeowner says. “The builder just left the space the way it fell. The homeowners purchased the condo in 1993, and after more than a decade of ownership, the time was ripe for a transformation. Osage Beach-based Westenhaver Construction managed the project from start to finish, including design and permits. During the renovation, some of the condo’s outdated infrastructure was replaced, including the HVAC system and electrical. A large portion of the renovation resulted in eyecatching cosmetic changes that morphed the space into a contemporary lakeside haven. Fabricated custom cabinetry and a fireplace surround created what the homeowner calls “a big statement.” Maple hardwood flooring adds a combination of sleekness and warmth, eliminating the need for problematic carpets that “refused to lie flat,” the homeowner says, adding that installing hardwood floors also “changed the whole atmosphere of the condo.” New millwork and doors and a designed custom wood staircase and railing completed the renovation. The renovation was finished in May 2011. As the various projects neared completion, the homeowners reached out to interior designer Nick Detert of Putnam’s Studio 1012 in Columbia. Light It Up Lauren Hermann, an art teacher who has a background in interior design, adds lamps wherever she can. Lamps with trim and beading on the edges add excitement and will stay in style. Express Your Personality Hermann also created an unexpected look by mixing modern glam furniture and vintage artwork. Tim Brockmeier, of Designs by Brockmeier, helped her create a soothing and relaxing palette of neutrals on the walls, except in her dining room where she used dill pickle and cream with a pink accent (shown). Go Retro John Elliott of John Elliott Interiors says design has gone back to sectionals and shag rugs. Sectionals can be arranged in many ways and give a room soft lines. Add bold patterned pillows for some sass.

MIAMI Located on Old Route 66 and pronounced by locals my-am-uh, this 13-mile stretch of town has three main claims to fame, Perry says. First is the Coleman Theatre Beautiful, renovated in a lush manner to its 1929 splendor and the home of a wide array of productions. The Route 66 Vintage Iron Motorcycle Museum is home to the Evel Knievel exhibit and Criss Angel’s Insane Sporty Rocket motorcycle. Or, if you feel like making a bet, there are a handful of places to do so , including the popular 70,000-squarefoot Buffalo Run Casino.

from I-44. This town has a very Old-Western feel and attractions to boot. The annual Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo is held here every August. The week-long event began in 1935 at the behest of the native son and features an opening-day parade and events, including steer and calf roping, bronco riding and barrel racing. For the past 33 years, the rodeo has been followed by “Big Country Weekend,” a day of celebration that includes a fair, softball tournament, carnival rides, entertainment and food. The highlight, perhaps, is the lunchtime calf fry, or mountain oyster, cook-off. Touted as the “Calf Fry Capital of the World,” 2,000 pounds of the delicacies are cooked. The town is also the home

JAY & EAST GRAND The city of Jay is the county seat, settled by the Cherokee Indians. Here, you’ll find the Mariee Wallace Museum, which commemorates those who traveled the trail. Each year during the Fourth of July weekend, the town throws a Huckleberry Festival. Car enthusiasts will enjoy perusing the National Rod & Custom Car Hall of Fame Museum created by car builder Darryl Starbird. The museum opened in 1995, is home to custom cars built by Starbird, and hosts an annual car and hot-rod show.

ELK RIVER If you come to the lake with your family, this is the place to stay, according to Perry. The small town, Cowskin, on this arm of the river was named after a tannery built there in the 1800s. There is an abundance of fishing cabins, and it’s a great place to take the kids waterskiing. “This is one of the prettier areas and is farther

Don’t let mosquitoes BUG you this season! Let United Mosquito & Fly Control design a custom solution for your yard. Instead of swatting mosquitoes, you’ll be enjoying your yard and grounds all summer long.

he earned a degree in industrial arts (and philosophy) and uses the art form for expression and, since 1982, to make a living.

What is your inspiration? It’s mostly the wood itself and the infinite possibilities that such a natural form presents. Along with that is the input and energy that comes from clients. Often, the piece begins to take on its own energy as I work, guiding me toward a satisfying product.

What makes you good at what you do? The engineering of a well-made piece of furniture is worked out through experience and becomes instinct. I bring great attention to detail to all my pieces. I look for materials that are of high quality, have some interest in terms of grain pattern and somehow express the ideas that I bring to that particular piece.

Take Back Your Yard.

UNITED MOSQUITO & FLY CONTROL CALL US TODAY! 913-558-3814 • www.unitedkc.com Ask about our Fly Control Systems for horse stables.

How do you connect with your work? The connection between materials and the finished piece can happen early in the process or midway through, when something about the wood gives me a new idea. You have to be willing to adjust and allow the intrinsic “life” of the wood to come through. It is, after all, “alive” in the sense that it continues to move and expand and contract even after it is made into furniture.

Describe your work, both in restoration and custom. My restorations have ranged from simple repair and refinishing to full-scale reproductions based on shadows of jointery left on original pieces. Custom pieces have ranged from a small box to contain the remains of a loved one to furnishing an entire house with Arts and Crafts-style pieces.

Why is custom work necessary or attractive to clients?

• Expert metal finishing, fabrication & repair including polishing & lacquering • Polished & black nickel, brass, copper, gold & silver plating • Restoration of door hardware, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, etc. • Custom fabrication of architectural elements

Ready-made pieces often don’t have the details or dimensions that a client needs. Having a piece custom-made means that all possibilities can be considered, whether it’s matching a style or filling out a set. The work is then associated with a maker, becoming an object of art that will be beautiful and useful for generations. – PROPRIETORS –

Flint Hills, Manhattan Experience the three-percent remaining tallgrass prairie in all the United States just two hours west of Kansas City.

SOME OF MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY ON BOTH U.S. COASTS think I’m absolutely nuts, and many people right here in Kansas City raise their eyebrows when I say that the Flint Hills of Kansas, in my opinion, is some of the most beautiful landscape in the country. That’s why I’m so excited about the new Flint Hills Discovery

Story by Diana Lambdin-Meyer Photos courtesy of City of Manhattan, Flint Hills Discovery Center, Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Diana Lambdin-Meyer

Center, which opened this spring in Manhattan. The 35,000-squarefoot building is all about the beauty of the Flint Hills and why the ecosystem is so important ___ not just to Kansas but to the entire world. I’m tempted to crawl through the tunnel that highlights the burrowing animals of the region, but that’s for kids. I’m told they’ll

ith store shoppers looking on, The Kitchen Design Studio at Nebraska Furniture Mart was roped off for our March Cooking

School. The culinary duo of food writer Pete Dulin and Cowtown Cheesecake owner Terry Mille provided a light, fresh menu for the season — using lots of ingredients from local vendors — with recipes for guests to take home — well, except for the

yummy, creamy dessert. All chefs have their secrets, and Chef Terry’s cheesecake isn’t an exception. But, something we can tell you is (and I’m sure you already know) that when you pair Somerset Ridge’s wine with a deserving dish, it makes your taste buds dance! Take our advice and serve these wines at your next dinner party.

Z Let a refreshing glass of Somerset’s Chardonel, a crisp, dry white wine, accompany your next salad. It’s a no-brainer. Y

Chilled Mint Pea Soup with Mint Whipped Cream ½ 2 1T 1 lb 2½C ½C 1-2

medium onion, diced cloves garlic, minced olive oil peas, fresh or frozen chicken broth fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped mint tea bags (Stash Moroccan mint tea produces concentrated flavor) salt and pepper to taste

Z Sausage bites served as an appetizer to“wet the whistle” before the event. Y

Spring Green Salad with Goat Cheese, Strawberries and Lemon-Honey Vinaigrette serves 4 2 C spring salad mix (i.e. mesclun) 8 T goat cheese (fresh if possible, Green Dirt Farm recommended) 8 strawberries 1 T stalks of chives, lightly minced (or substitute fresh chopped herbs) 1 T fresh lemon zest 1. Place ½ C salad mix on four plates. Slice or scoop 2 T of goat cheese onto salad. 2. Wash and slice strawberries in half. Put two strawberries (total) on each salad. 3. Garnish with chives (or herbs) to taste and lemon zest. 4. Serve with lemon-honey vinaigrette.

1. In a medium pot, sauté onion and garlic in olive oil until softened. 2. Add peas (thawed, if frozen), broth and mint tea bags. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to medium and let simmer for 3-4 minutes. (Avoid extended cooking to retain a bright green color.) 3. Remove tea bags, pressing lightly to drain absorbed broth. Let soup cool to room temperature. 4. Add chopped mint and purée with an immersion blender until well-blended. 5. Strain soup, if desired. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Chill completely. 6. Serve with a dollop of fresh whipped mint cream and sprig of mint. Whipped Cream: 2 pt heavy cream 2-3 mint tea bags 1. Put cream and mint tea bags into a container or jar that can be sealed. After sealing, shake well and store in a refrigerator overnight. 2. Remove tea bags, pressing lightly to expel cream and mint juice. 3. Prior to serving chilled soup, whip cream by hand or blender until small peaks form.

Z The mint in the pea soup is intensified with each sip of Riesling. Y

1. Pour olive oil in a medium bowl. Slowly add vinegar and use a whisk to blend with oil until emulsified. 2. Add honey and lemon juice and whisk until well-blended. 3. Add a pinch of salt and cracked white pepper to taste. Yields just more than 1 C. MAY/JUNE 2012 • 85
