ORIGINAL E C L E C T I C I S M A woman who knows what she likes creates spaces true to herself yet also true to her century-old home. STORY BY ANDREA DARR
The formal dining table is well-used during the holidays when the Nords’ families fly in from across the country, including Houston, Oklahoma, Montana and North Carolina. The brown walls are exactly the same color as in their previous home. Gay stumbled upon the ornate antique mirror at a lighting shop in downtown Houston, where it had previously been purchased in an estate sale, and the colorful side chairs are from Anthropologie.

n the summer of 2009, Gay and Stan Nord moved to Kansas City from Houston. They walked through this 1907 Sunset Hill home three times and just couldn’t
get it out of their minds. “It had so much potential and character,” Gay says. “I knew taking on this much house was insane, but I could see where it needed to go.” They hired John Mackaman of Elswood Smith Carlson Architects to rework the exterior, which was Tudor in style, although not a true representation and not to the Nords’ taste. The interior architectural detail was much more appealing to them, although it, too, needed a refresher from the dark and faux-painted walls. Gay’s vision was a bright and eclectic style that still honored the original details of the house, namely gorgeous lead-glass windows and substantial woodwork. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

The couple spends most of their time in the great room, lounging on leather couches. The TV is hidden in a built-in hutch so the focus of the room, when it’s not in use, is the original art. Gay is an accomplished pianist and plays to relax from a hectic career in the health-care industry.

Above... Grays continue usage upstairs in the master bedroom, although they’re darker to create a moodier atmosphere. Gay had custom radiator covers made and new marble installed on the fireplace. Right... Gay originally wanted a red and white woodblock print for this tiny bath under the stairs, but since the paper can’t get wet, she went the opposite direction and selected this reflective Art Deco paper. “I like the color and I didn’t want to use too much of it,” Gay says.

That same feeling extended to the windows where Gay used half roman shades to expose the beauty of the glass but offer a modicum of privacy. They installed new storm windows over the old lead-glass windows to increase energy efficiency but keep the look. Once the interiors were complete, Gay set her focus on the outside ___ the garage, specifically, turning it from tandem-style to a three-car and adding a green roof above. “When you looked out the windows, you saw black tar paper,” Gay scoffs. After two years of remodeling and redecorating, Gay is satisfied with her surroundings. “I don’t settle when I have a vision in mind, which is a good thing and a bad thing,” she says. Of course, just as she and Stan are ready to fully enjoy their home, her job called on her to transfer again

Antonio. “I’m just sick about leaving this place,” she says. But going home to Texas, she has the chance to improve upon a perfected look, once again.
Warm ___ literally, with heated floors ___ and modern, the master bath appears very Zen in nature, with power in simplicity. The space is sectioned off with two custom onyx-topped vanities made of walnut with tiger wood inlay and a freestanding tub in the first section, a walk-in shower in the second and a former bedroom transformed into a closet at the end.

Designer Cindy Rinfret is known for creating beautiful interiors, but it’s her outdoor living room that has caught our attention at her personal residence, Laurel Hill. Set amid perfectly manicured gardens and a koi pond, the welcoming space blurs the line between inside and out, protected from the elements and adorned with fine yet durable furnishings. With its fireplace and warm blankets, it beckons any season.

With the design of this home, Atlanta-based Rabaut Design Associates successfully blended the Tudor Revival-style architecture of the home’s exterior with a fresher, more transitional interior aesthetic. In the living room, contemporary art complements traditional millwork detailing and light fixtures. Tailored furnishings give shape to a space befitting the young, family-oriented client. A fresh, spring-like palette lends energy to the room. The firm chose this room as one of its own favorite spaces for its easy gracefulness and sense of calm. The editors couldn’t agree more.
Mountain views were the inspiration for the look of this Vail residence, completed by interior designer Eddy Doumas of Worth Interiors. The rich yet neutral tones of the furnishings juxtapose perfectly with the rustic sandstone, iron chandelier and bold modern art. “Designed and ordered atmospheres can evoke an inviting sense of comfortable refinement on a mountain of chaos,” Doumas says.

The Wheeler residence’s indoor/outdoor pool is the centerpiece of the Snowmass, Colo., property. A large operable door frames a dramatic view of the Elk Mountains and, when open, disappears into the ceiling. A luminous “sky” ceiling changes throughout the day, echoing the color of the real sky just outside and giving the room a magical glow.

This serene bath is in a historic, Queen Anne–style home originally built in 1894 for Gardiner Greene Hubbard, the first president of the National Geographic Society. A recent renovation by Boston’s Meyer & Meyer Inc. transformed an unused office into a dream bathroom suite: gas fireplace, heated Carrara marble floor, custom window seat, steam shower and period-appropriate whirlpool tub, all pulled together with a soft palette of white and blue-gray for the perfect marriage of comfort and classic New England design. Message from the
W
President
elcome to the annual Kansas City Symphony Guild Homes of Note Tour XXXVIII.
This year’s holiday tour is an “Encore” since we are returning to Shoal Creek Valley in Kansas City, Mo. This time, the tour will feature one home in The Preserve, the cornerstone of the Shoal Creek Valley development. Our holiday boutique will be in The Gate House at The Preserve. Stop by to start your Christmas shopping with our collection of unique area merchants. The other two homes on the tour are in The Village, a neighborhood built in classic Kansas City tradition, where quaint village streetscapes encourage neighborliness and evoke a strong sense of community. While at The Village, take a break at The Park House for Christmas cookies and a warm drink. Or, to enjoy our special boxed lunch and holiday fashion show featuring fashions from Chico’s, make reservations online at kcsymphonyguild.org. The Symphony Guild is one of five auxiliaries working in support of the Kansas City Symphony. After its exhilarating inaugural season at Helzberg Hall in the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the Kansas City Symphony is the envy of the classical music world. It is an exciting time to be a part of the arts in Kansas City. Dedicated Symphony Guild members have worked all year to prepare for our Homes of Note tour. We wish to thank the generous homeowners, the creative florists and designers, talented musicians, contributors and friends for all their support and help with this event. On behalf of the Kansas City Symphony Guild, thank you for participating in our holiday tour, “Encore.” We know you will enjoy it.

ohn and Keri Miller’s family will be spending their first Christmas in this house, having just moved into the home in June 2012. “Christmas is our favorite holiday,” John says.
The family looks forward to putting up a small village collection and the tree. “I love to hear all the family chatter, laughter and sometimes the argument on who moved an ornament,” John says. He adds that the children have become very competitive in the gingerbread-house decorating. John and Keri are not just the homeowners, they also are the homebuilders. John’s company, Distinctive Homes by J&K Properties, built the home, along with KC Architecture, in 2012 in

Shoal Creek Valley. The company also has built several other homes in the development. Keri does all of the decorating and selects the interior finishes during construction. But John’s talents are on display inside the home as well. “We have several paintings throughout the home by John,” Keri says. “He enjoys painting when he gets the chance to use his art degree, a different avenue than building homes.” Several distinctive features personalize the home for the Millers. For the kids, it’s the trophy wall in the lower level. “We built this for them to be able to display all their medals, to be proud of themselves, and for us to cherish the memories,” John says. But the family has two other favorite areas. “We have really enjoyed the large, open great-room concept,” Keri says. “It allows our family to come together each evening, with the kids doing homework at the table, Mom cooking and Dad catching up on the latest football game. We get to stay connected this way.” The other favorite space for the men in the family is the lower-level theater area. “Watching movies on the big screen or playing a game of pool is a nice end to the weekends,” John says.

Griffith
HOME
T
he architecture and lifestyle of the South inspired Jeff Griffith and Deborah Whitebird-Griffith when they were building their home in July 2011. “I designed the home with a nod to the southern charm of the New
Orleans low-country homes,” Deborah says. “My husband and I make several trips during the year down to New Orleans. We very much enjoy the culture and architecture of the area.” The couple modified a Southern Living magazine plan, called the Eastover Cottage, maintaining only the exterior façade and interior staircase. “When beginning the design discussions with our architect, I had one requirement for my new home: a front porch where I could sit, drink sweet tea, watch my children play and visit with neighbors,” Deborah says. The family appreciates the traditional neighborhood concept of The Village development. “I love that the homes in the neighborhood are designed to encourage camaraderie and friendship,” she says. “The concept of community is very much alive in our neighborhood. Jeff and I believe that homes are to be lived in, using as much space as possible rather than overbuilding. I wanted to create a space that kept us together but still allowed some privacy.” Deborah loves to fill her space with repurposed or antique items. “With the exception of our long couch in the hearth room, all our furniture is either repurposed or antique. The chandelier in our dining room came from our old home dating back to the 1800s. Many of 14 • 2012 HOMES OF NOTE

the light fixtures on the walls also are repurposed lights as well as the chandeliers. I took beautiful antique candelabra pieces and had them wired for the hallway, master bedroom and entranceway,” she says. She also enjoys taking quality furniture pieces and having them torn down and reupholstered. “The construction of older furniture is often more solid than some of the newer pieces on the market. Just because they might need a little makeover does not deem them ready for the junkyard. Spending the money to reupholster and update a piece not only saves our landfills but also allows you to take ownership and personalize pieces of your furniture. Many people think that reupholstering is too expensive, but it actually isn’t considering the quality of furniture produced in the ’40s and ’50s. The two small settee sofas are Ethan Allen, dating back to the ’50s that I purchased for $40 each. They’re some of my favorite pieces.” Despite the love of her whole home, Deborah’s favorite room is the kitchen. “Its openness allows everyone to be together, especially by providing a dining room table right in the middle rather than segmenting it out into another part of the house,” she says. Continuing design motifs in the decor are small white birds. While on the tour, look for the Christmas tree decorated entirely of them. “My children and I are Whitebirds,” Deborah says. “We hyphenated their names to keep my family’s name going. We’re from the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma.”

Smith
HOME
E
verything about Joe Smith’s home shows how much he loves nature, from the lush yet organic landscaping
outside to the rich earthy colors inside. This home is truly a tribute to Mother Earth. When Joe started building his home in The Village in 2008, the concept for his house was to take advantage of the nearby woods and corner lot to bring his dream of a Craftsman-style home to The Village to influence the platting of the rest of the development. In order to make this dream become a reality, he had to find a builder who could see his vision. Doing his homework, he chose JoAnn Nero of Aristocrat Homes. When you walk around to the backyard, you can see the woods with the established trees. To make sure the trees stay healthy, Joe works with Bret Cleveland of Urban Tree to keep them properly nourished and pruned. Landscaping is also one of his passions, which makes sense because he is the owner of Embassy Lawn & Landscaping, a company he started when he was 10 and continued while getting his education at Park Hill and KU. So, who mows all that grass? Joe lives with his four sons; his oldest son is an accounting major at St. Louis University and his youngest is an elementary student at Liberty Oaks Elementary School located in The Village. The boys help out, but Joe insists that they pursue their own

dreams. For example, the oldest son is a baseball pitcher who is considering entering the major league draft next summer. When you walk inside this home, you can see Joe’s love of nature reflected in other interior aspects. When Andy Homoly of Homoly Construction began remodeling the downstairs level of the home, Joe remembered a reclaimed walnut slab he had purchased in Colorado that they were able to turn into a Ushaped rustic bar top. He also rescued mantels from Canyon Café as they were headed to the dumpster when the Plaza restaurant closed years ago. Perhaps the most earth-friendly feature of the home is its geothermal heating and cooling system by ECS Geothermal. According to the EPA, geothermal systems are the most energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, cost-effective systems in use. “I only use gas for cooking,” Joe says. The use of this system keeps his utility costs significantly lower. In addition to saving money, the process of installing the system provided an unexpected bonus. “When drilling for the geothermal system, we hit water,” he says. “Now I use that water to irrigate my landscaping for free.” He was able to keep his thirsty plants green and growing, even during this summer’s drought and 100-degree days.

rom the grand spiral staircase to the distinctive chandeliers to our 1,200-square-foot master
bedroom with a substantial living area, fireplace, wet bar and workout room, our home is unique in every way. The kitchen is equipped with all the extras: an indoor grill, pot filler, griddle and, our favorite, the butcher block prep island. The hearth room, although large, is still cozy and has a beautiful rock fireplace framed with bookshelves. For our holiday decor, the entry, formal dining room and living room will be adorned in gold, silver and other metals. A soaring 12-foot Christmas tree will take center stage in the formal living room, and in the kitchen/ hearth area, we’ve chosen a red and white candy-cane motif. Our idea is to have a more traditional theme for the formal areas and fun, casual elements in the kitchen/hearth area. In choosing our decorations, we prefer to incorporate items we have been collecting for years, with newer items and themes relevant to today’s contemporary styles. A special holiday tradition we enjoy is to leave our

home” when they are in our home. Our living room, the first room you see when coming in the front door, is a transitional area with purple, cream, orange and red dancing around the room. As a natural and calm space, that augments our beautiful lake view. When we have guests, everyone gathers downstairs in the bar/living area. It is a spacious, sweeping design decorated in purple, red and light moss colors with several intimate places to sit and chat. There is also a pool table for those who like to play and an open area that can seat everyone if watching a game or movie. It is a casual space that we hope says, “Come in, relax and join the conversation.” For our holiday decorations, we don't have a set color theme, but like to go bold and rich, incorporating special ornaments that were given to us as children and those our kids have made. Nevertheless, we do have a special holiday tradition, which is to make a white cake to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

ur custom-designed home is rustic, open and rests on a cul-de-sac in a forest on the peninsula
of a lake. The people across the lake call it “Harry Potter’s house” because of the unusual and plentiful rooflines. In the summer, when people walk into the great room with its huge rough-cut columns and beams and take in the spectacular view of the tops of the trees, they call it our treehouse. Inside, tall ceilings with low eaves combine drama with coziness. Our formal dining room has a 10-footlong buffet, and a massive five-sided rock fireplace is all that separates the roomy kitchen and hearth room. This area of the home is anchored by a 15-foot-by-4-foot double-thick, rough-edged granite island. For the holidays, we always have a wood-burning fire, music and candles and decorate with ornaments and a couple of metal Santas — one suspended over a table, the other moving along it — and we open our gifts one at a time! Our home is a wonderful place to live, and we feel very fortunate to be here.
Designer/Florist KHL Design Studio/Kelly Lankford with design interns from University of Central Missouri The architecture and interior design of this stunning home possess a close kinship with the natural surroundings, therefore we will expand upon this ambiance to create a winter wonderland setting that is joyful yet sophisticated for the season. Think bold colors, eye-catching details and a few surprises for this holiday experience.

hen we bought our house, which has two
staircases, a large kitchen and hearth room, and
interesting ceiling lines, we knew this would be the perfect home for our busy and always-on-the-go family of five. Although we have a generous amount of square footage, our house always feels warm and comfortable, accentuated by loads of candles, sconces and lamps, which together create an inviting ambiance. For the holidays, we like to use warm, rustic colors — leopard prints, checks, burlap, twine — plus bottle brush trees and nontraditional items for our displays. We love finding and using vintage Christmas items like antique ornaments in a clear hurricane lamp, so we tend to buy things that are not necessarily “Christmas decorations” but something that can be easily “Christmas-fied”! True of most people’s homes, the kitchen is always the prime gathering spot. Ours is spacious and welcoming with a magnificent fireplace, a large farm table to accommodate a lot of friends and family, and a considerable granite island that can easily transform into a food buffet. No matter what we eat, each year we and our three girls are sure to make Grandma’s fool-proof sugar cookie recipe from the 1940s...delicious!

Gilbert, Whitney & Co./Meredith Martin From savory Christmas spices in boutique vials tied with baker’s twine to “delicious” gingerbread place-card holders, our designs will set the stage for a wonderful, intimate holiday party ambiance. WHY SBISA HOMES? Sbisa Homes is a second-generation company with over 50+ years of experience in the home building industry. Our legacy had stood the test of time. Through competitive market shares and economical downturns, the company still stands strong. Many companies boast the number of homes they built. Typically, this involves reproduction housing with someone other than your builder on site. Volume building has never been a pursuit of this company. What is offered is personal involvement. This method provides direct on site management of the product, a necessity for a well built home. It defines quality over quantity within the home building process. Along with an Engineering background and hands-on trade experience, Sbisa Homes has additional training as a CGP (Certified Green Professional) and is involved with Energy Star Building methods. According to the NAHB website, Sbisa Homes
is only one of three Missouri builders to deliver a Certified Green home under the National Green Building Standards in the Kansas City metro area. Poor designs and methods of construction can remain unseen and unknown well beyond the warranty period, such as: Ice traps in roof lines, improper ground prep for concrete, and construction methods performed at the minimum criteria. At Sbisa Homes, the goal is to design and build a home both structurally and architecturally correct the first time. “We should have built with you” has been a phrase regretfully heard too many times over the years from potential customers. So consider your home as a true investment and build with an experienced, hands-on company that has stood the test of time and offers you a place you can happily call home!

“Women Serving and Supporting the Community” IT’S A BIG JOB EVERY YEAR TO COORDINATE THE MANY VOLUNTEERS, designers and homeowners involved with Johnson County Young Matrons’ (JCYM) holiday homes tour, but everyone participates with a big heart. The organization, celebrating its 51st anniversary, seeks to educate and serve those in need with fundraising efforts like the Home for the Holidays Tour. “My favorite thing about the Homes Tour and Boutique is watching the efforts of so many people come together for an event that is so much fun,” says Nancy Hirschman, JCYM president. “Basically, every member of JCYM does something to help with these events, and we also have the support

of the underwriters, homeowners, designers, local businesses and all the individuals who purchase tickets or shop at the Boutique __ everyone’s working together to help the members of our community served by our philanthropies.” Tour co-chairmen Revelyn Alpaugh, Judy Tremblay and Jayne Nash

exhausted every contact that the organization’s members had to find the four homes on this year’s tour. “Everyone has been so generous to step up and help make a difference,” Alpaugh says. “And we are so grateful to have these beautiful homes and homeowners so willing to open their homes to the entire community.” This year’s lineup includes four homes in different communities farther west than usual, including The Estates at Mills Farm, The Estates of GlenEagles and Heritage Hill West. “There’s a lot of building going on in the area,” Alpaugh notes. “The homes are all very different. One is a beautiful Arts & Crafts style, one is Southern Colonial, one is more contemporary, and one is very warm and inviting. Everyone on the tour will leave each home and say, “I loved that home.” Even when our own committee members visit the homes, they’ve been surprised at some of the architecture and interior design.” Each of the homes has been paired with a designer and tablescape

designer for a professionally decorated look. “We have returning and new designers who will be bringing in new trends as well as some classics,” Alpaugh says. The one-day tour takes place November 14 from 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m. For more information about the organization, visit jcym.net.
JCYM PHILANTHROPIES In 2011, JCYM members provided the following philanthropies with close to 20,000 hours of service and distributed more than $105,000, including $11,000 in scholarships. In keeping with JCYM’s strong belief in the importance of education, nine scholarships nominated by these philanthropies were awarded. These scholarships help others improve their lives, families and futures. ●

“I’m excited about the opportunity to decorate this extraordinary home during the holiday season. Its classic and beautiful interior will transform into a colorful and festive experience for those who want to come in for a little holiday cheer. In addition, visitors will enjoy viewing the amazing lower level that any sports enthusiast would covet. With the warm and comfortable feeling that this home will portray, anyone leaving will be anticipating a very happy holiday season.”
THIS MISSION-STYLE HOME PERFECTLY POSITIONED ON A CORNER LOT in The Estates of GlenEagles is an impressive “surprise” package. From the beautiful appointments and materials to the artwork lining the walls, this home is captivating. A stone-glazed table in the dining room to the left of the entry is complemented by a uniquely textured oil painting brilliantly splashed with summer perennials by international artist Lau Chun. Across the hall is a den with honey and gray fauxpainted walls. A garden room and handsome living room with a slate-accented fireplace complete the circle. A generous hall lined with the owner’s collection of beautiful artwork connects the living areas with a view through windowed walls to a slice of Kansas prairie. The kitchen with Mission-inspired cabinetry, arched doorways, hearth room, dining area, and outdoor covered patio and grill with all the amenities is spacious and inviting. Nothing short of jaw-dropping, the lower level is a kid’s dream at any age. A generous mezzanine overlook adorned with colorful panels done by local artist Jeff Hanson is situated above a sunken multiuse “sport court” that’s accessible by a slide from above, if you are adventuresome, or down the stairs. The mezzanine also includes a caterer’s kitchen, an eating area and areas for viewing all the action.

Susan Seward POTTERY BARN “This holiday season we are inspired by the pairing of opposites: rustic textures and materials mixed with soft and luxurious surfaces, rustic wood, warm candlelight reflecting off mercury glass candlesticks, glistening crystal and the soft gleam of pewter. All are setting the mood for the delights of entertaining, whether it is a large dinner party or an intimate gathering of loved ones. Pottery Barn offers complimentary design and entertaining services to help you design the perfect holiday tablescape.”
Whatever your preference, you can play basketball on the court below or watch from above on a goalpost-inspired TV cabinet. A billiards table is steps from the large curved bar area, which anchors a large family gathering space with two sitting areas for those wanting a quiet retreat. A tiled fireplace repeats the design throughout the home. A trophy room and office with sports memorabilia conclude the lower level. This house is a fantasy for avid sports enthusiasts everywhere. Choosing a theme provides a golden thread to tie your decorating together from room to room or table to table. Setting the table early with special attention to personal touches, such as place cards or themed table favors, adds to the anticipation.” NOVEMBER 2012 • 91

NESTLED IN BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPING, THIS SOUTHERN COUNTRYinspired home in the Heritage Hill West neighborhood is reminiscent of a more gracious, elegant era. The delightful front porch lined with hanging baskets sets the ambience. As you enter the foyer, the chandelier, lovingly packed and moved to its new home from Southern glory days, catches the light. Graciously prepared for a feast, jewel tones of blue and red beckon you into the dining room. The sitting room to the right of the entry features an antique fireplace surround from the owner’s former home in Kentucky. Reproductions and antique musical instruments are ideal for this cozy space. Rich floral wallpaper, birch cabinets and dark ebony granite counters make for an inviting kitchen and hearth room. Added later by the homeowners, a spacious garden room, steps from the kitchen, is the perfect place to share a cup of tea or an after-dinner drink and enjoy the view of the charming patio and antique fountain. A lower-level entertainment area features walls covered with handtumbled brick from North Carolina. The leather and nail back bar chairs, along with whiskey barrel wine storage, encourage afternoon watch parties on the large projection TV. Antique bourbon barrels are perfect as a hideout for sound equipment. Upstairs, the patterned carpet leads to a cornucopia of bedroom styles. A hunting cabin retreat is perfect for the young Southern gentleman; a scenic landscape mural on the wall and playhouse-style bed is the stuff of fantasy for this little girl’s room; and for the more grownup young lady, a Victorianenclosed bed nook awash in cabbage rose wallpaper and fabric is lovely. A reclaimed fireplace mantel, another “find” by the homeowners, resides in the stately master bedroom. Southern country charm has definitely found a home in the Midwest.

The Estates atMills Farm
“I will be using some of the homeowner’s holiday decorations this year to incorporate into the dining room tablescape. Our color theme will be gold paired with white and touches of natural elements, such as wood, branches and fresh flowers. You can never go wrong with gold as it adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any area of your home during the holidays. It's a classic holiday color that never goes out of style.”
THIS DRAMATIC CRAFTSMAN-STYLE, TWO-STORY HOME SET ON A LOVELY corner lot in The Estates at Mills Farm says “welcome” in a glorious way. The elegant leaded glass-front doors and crystal accented copper chandelier light up the grand staircase in the entryway. The ultimate in adjoining work spaces is just to the left of the entry. “His” office is resplendent in cherry wood-paneled doors and wainscoting accented by a rich jewel-toned oriental carpet. The adjoining “hers” office is sleeping porchinspired in a lighter color palette that provides a perfect place to write or enjoy the garden view through crisp white plantation-shuttered windows. The homeowners’ collection of Red Skelton limited-edition clown paintings featuring “Freddie the Freeloader,” among others, seems to wink from the walls of the library/media room. The living and dining rooms that open to the front entry are connected by warm hues of green, red and gold accented with dark cherry wood floors. The heart of this home is the farmhouse provincial-style kitchen and hearth room designed by Kitchens by Kleweno. A yellow tile-edged alcove expertly houses a custom-made blue La Cornue CornuFé five-burner gas range with copper accents. A hand-painted tile wall of Capistrano-inspired characters complements the colors in the range. The plaster faux-finish walls are done in pale butterscotch and russet accents. Highlighting the ceiling are hand-scraped wood beams that blend comfortably with stained and glazed cabinets of contrasting colors. Freestanding and built-in cabinetry shows a fresh way to meld styles and colors. Not to be missed, the roomy lower-level entertainment area has a rustic stacked-stone fireplace that complements the textures of the tile bar surround. A large game and media area, including a nearby outdoor patio with fireplace, completes the tour of this grand home. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

Phyllis Kogan PHYLLIS KOGAN INTERIOR DESIGN “By working with gray, blue and white throughout the house, the colors will be a perfect backdrop for the blues and whites symbolic of Israel and Judaica. A refined, more formal, yet festive approach will be used for the entry, dining room and great room. The kitchen and the remaining first-floor rooms will be more colorful and playful. Many different Menorahs will be on display, from pure whimsy to reproductions of beautiful Menorahs from past ages. Gifts, toys, dreidels (a game of chance using a spinning top), flowers, candles, plants and fruit typical of the Middle East will be part of the decor.”

The Estates at Mills Farm IT’S LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT UPON ENTERING THIS HOME BUILT BY Tim Cunningham with Hamptons-style architecture in The Estates at Mills Farm. “New Year’s Eve is the epitome of new beginnings. After the holiday, it is time to de-clutter and start with a clean slate. In Kansas City, it may be 75 degrees on New Year’s Eve, but it is still winter, so that should be your design theme. For the “icy look,” go with white and silver with lots of sparkle. Using white hydrangeas is an easy way to make a huge impact. Since tulips are back in season at this time, white tulips are an unexpected statement. Remember a large bunch of one type of flower is really beautiful. Cheers!”
plank floors and bold wallpaper reflect a one-of-a-kind feel. The dining room, resplendent in crystal, silver and wood accessories, is ready for any formal event. A sleek engineered stone sink island welcomes you from the side entry porte cochere to the kitchen. Built-in Wolf appliances and a Sub-Zero refrigerator hidden behind a beautifully prefinished wall cabinet highlight the kitchen space. Custom chalkboard-faced cabinets, a craft/office room, pantry and oversize garage with built-in cabinetry are an organizer’s dream. The jewel of the left wing is an 800-square-foot year-round enclosed lanai situated just steps from the gleaming dark-surfaced infinity pool. Two walls of accordion-style doors fold back to bring the outdoors in or out, depending on the owner’s mood or seasonal whim. The right wing of the home, also with views of the waterfall, is home to a den and sumptuous master bedroom suite. The master bath has striking marble sinks, mirrored cabinetry and a freestanding spa

soaking tub. The expansive closet and dressing room is roomy enough for anyone’s shoe collection. A generous curved bar, media and game room — all with access to the patio at the base of the infinity pool waterfall — add another dimension to this home. Here, the Hamptons meets the Midwest!
“This fall we will be using layers of texture, color and thematic interest as some of our focuses for holiday entertaining and dining. Incorporating grand-scaled table accessories like vases and candle accessories can help elevate a tablescape to the level of a celebrity event planner.”
