In our annual kitchen and bath issue — and also trending nationwide — is the beautiful, all-white, pristine kitchen, incorporating color in backsplash and accessories and defining style through fabric and lighting. Master baths are following suit with restful spaces void of overwhelming color palettes to create a calming, serene space customized for the bather. The 2013 Kitchen & Bath Style Report by the National Kitchen & Bath Association has white-painted cabinetry as the top choice by homeowners as well as glass backsplashes, LED lighting and touchactivated faucets. In the bathroom, ceramic/porcelain tile and undermounted sinks still reign supreme, while integrated sink/countertops are gaining in popularity each year. (Flip through our collection of kitchen and bath products starting on page 24.) When it comes to overall style, traditional has been pushed aside for transitional, and whites/off-whites remain top color choices in both the kitchen and bath. Beiges/bone colors come in second. You’ll find ALL of these trends inside –– see, KC is hip. Taking style outside, we applaud our 2013 Gardens of the Year winners, whose picture-perfect landscape designs pop off the pages. Cool trends boosting form and function debut in the heart of the home –– the place to see and be. Can’t stand the heat...so get out of the kitchen? Wait a minute. In this case, the reverse is in order. Today’s kitchen is hot stuff, humming with efficiency and stylized good looks. “Update a kitchen and it’s money in the bank,” says Architect Bruce Wendlandt, AIA. “This is no longer a room divorced from the rest of the house.” Everything revolves around this control center –– a leading trend identified by the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s (NKBA) 2013 Kitchen & Bath Style Report. “That’s due to a shift in lifestyle,” says Bob Osterlund, marketing director for Starr Homes. “Considering 80 percent of a day is spent in the kitchen and family room, building a kitchen that flows from one area to another is a mainstay. In fact, 90 percent of the homes we build have no formal dining room. We’ve incorporated it into the overall kitchen space where it’s now routinely utilized.” Another hallmark cited in NKBA’s survey: “uncluttered kitchens showcasing a seamless blend of modern with transitional style,” says Cherie Brown, kitchen designer with Kitchens by Kleweno.

In keeping with the original look and feel of the home, this Mission Hills kitchen, remodeled under tight constraints, showcases fashionable, timeless design features: light-blue iridescent glass tile backsplash; Perla Venato granite countertops; convenient storage, especially drawer space; deep shelving flanking the hood for pantry items (as well as separate built-ins for cookbooks); and some name-brand appliances like a Sub-Zero fridge.

Left... The revamped butler’s pantry is light, bright and airy with its glass-front cabinets and all-white finish. This attached “hallway” allows for extra prep space and stores dishes, glassware and fine china.
Below... In addition to updating the entire kitchen –– and then some –– French doors were added for outside access, which was nonexistent before. “The homeowner wanted modern amenities, a place to gather, and she loves the views outside,” Architect Bruce Wendlandt says.“We also wanted it to graciously flow out to the portico.”

Couple the chic style of soothing (and trending) gray color schemes with the sophistication of quartz finishes for countertops and you’ve got a very updated look. Gerould Sabin, owner of Elements of Green, notes, “While granite and marble are perennial favorites, quartz countertop blends are increasingly popular.” As is cabinetry that’s constantly evolving. Multiple cabinet heights and depths featuring dark colors or all-white finishes are equally fashionable. Cabinets also can be designed like pieces of furniture, with various decorative accents from metal to leather. Katie Ott, co-owner of Kitchen Studio: Kansas City, says, “Some people don’t want Below... Custom cabinetry, with doors above
cabinets, only open shelving.” But if cabinets are used, she’s seeing more drawers used instead of doors, “especially at knee level and below.”
the countertops and drawers below, are dressed up even more with dainty brass hardware.
Another trend noticed by Terry Skilling, owner of Rhino Builders, is lighting. “LED lighting has become very trendy because of its quality of cool light, long life and low cost,” he explains.
After renovating the space, it’s much more efficient, allowing the homeowners, family and guests to truly enjoy the superior surroundings.

“My kids are grown, so I wanted a dressier kitchen,” homeowner Wendy Zecy says. “I had a dark kitchen before and wanted white.” With help from designer Karen Austin, specific features include Imperial Danby marble countertops and backsplash, double Thermador ovens, Bertazzoni range and a U-Line wine fridge in the butler’s pantry. “People say,‘It really looks like [this kitchen] has been here all along,’”
“With LED light tape, we have been able to create some spectacular effects on glass shelves and cabinets. We’ve also noticed larger light fixtures over the island taking the place of pendants.”
Wendy says.“It truly is a working kitchen.” The finishing touches come in the form of copper accessories, something Wendy’s been collecting for years.
Taking reflectivity a step further, backsplashes are now considered a vital design point. Metal, mosaic and glass panels are in demand, adding texture and depth. With undermounted cabinet lighting, all of these surfaces bounce light, expanding the visual space. According to NKBA, the preference for glass backsplashes has grown during the past three years, from 42 percent in 2010 to 64 percent. Trends come and go, but today’s kitchen has permanently evolved, and these dominating trends are likely to have staying power.

Behind the range wall is the classy butler’s pantry with stocked bar, Wendy’s son’s favorite pit stop. But it’s the custom-built folding bar top that elicits continuous conversation.“We worked with the cabinetmaker (Weaver Cabinet Co.) to come up with a folding bar top that’s integrated into the base cabinets at both sides of the doorway,” says Architect Rick McDermott, owner of RDM Architecture. “It disappears completely when closed, and when open, it appears to be an integral part of the trim.” A hidden, built-in secretary desk folds out from perimeter cabinetry beside the bar top in the same creative manner.

Bryson Casey had specific needs for the custom home he wanted to build with his fiancée, Rachel Rearrick. The 34-year-old war veteran was seriously injured in a car accident in 2008, leaving him in a wheelchair — technically a quadriplegic with some limited hand and arm movement. Specialty design features and integrated technology were necessary to help him maximize his independent lifestyle. Fortunately, he found a builder and designer who grasped the situation and focused on creating a home that was not only beautiful but functional, utilizing the principals of Universal Design — meaning that spaces are accessible to all, with no barriers to movement or use. “The home had to be zero-clearance, which means there’s not a step going in or out of the house,” says builder Weston Evans Bennett of Bennett Home Improvement & Building. All 5,800 square feet of the house are personally tailored to Bryson’s mobility and usage needs with a wheelchairaccessible elevator. Almost all doorways are 42 inches wide — that includes several inches of customized pocket doors left exposed for easy opening and closing while keeping the entryways comfortable. Additionally, the standard walk-in pantry was replaced with a long, shallow food closet with sliding doors that Bryson can maneuver while seated.

A seamlessly designed cavity in the bedroom ceiling, which mimics the design in the kitchen, can later accommodate a track system, helping transport Bryson between bedroom and bath. “The colors are so relaxing,” says Bryson, who helped choose the home’s palette. below... The zero-clearance tiled shower is one of Bryson’s favorite parts of the home. This remote-controlled space includes a hat box toilet (with no back), seamless drains, and a specialized caddy design by Shawn that features a 30-degree angle to allow for water drainage. opposite... This soothing basin area includes an LED chandelier, which can be adjusted easily with an automation system called Control4.
Many of these Universal Design concepts were implemented by Shawn McCune, CKD and owner of Kitchen Design Gallery. He also worked with his mother, interior designer Alaire McCune, to design around elements that can be problematic for wheelchairs. For instance, rather than rugs, they used geometric tile designs to mimic decorative floor coverings. Shawn also helped personalize the master bedroom suite to disguise a custom track for Bryson that, should he ever need it, could transport him from his bed to bathroom to closet changing area. Technology also has made Bryson’s day-to-day life easier. Using an iPad, he can control the lights, blinds, temperature, security settings and more. “The whole house is basically automated,” he says. There’s a stereo system that he can play while putting a meal together in the kitchen, where he can wash up in the lower of two sinks; pull up to a 30-inch-high prep station; easily access a microwave, coffeemaker and refrigerator drawers; and even lower a customized cooktop. Many of his electrical needs are covered by solar power generated through panels on his roof that capture enough energy to leave credits on his utility bill. Since moving in December 2012, Bryson and Rachel have found the home to be not only functional but beautiful as well. “I make an effort, every day, to go through every room,” Bryson says. And that task is made almost effortless with the home’s stylish take on Universal Design.

Mark and Aimee Beemer’s Overland Park home was only built in 1998 –– not that long ago to most of us –– but its functionality seemed to be stuck in another era. “It was so choppy, just a bunch of little rooms,” Aimee says. That just didn’t work for the family of six, plus the constant flow of additional people, from PTA members and Boy Scouts to neighbors and friends. “We’re not record-holders for entertaining in Kansas City, but we’re probably in the top 5 percent,” Mark says. Design and technology have taken leaps in the last 15 years, altering the way homes are designed and people live, especially busier-than-ever, modern-day families like the Beemers. The couple brought interior designer Julia Haseltine into their world, and all three of them collaborated on a complete rethink of space, style, flow and functionality. While their first thoughts were to update the kitchen and repaint, the project quickly snowballed into gutting the entire house and starting over. “I’m most proud that Mark and Aimee made up their mind that this was going to be their home, their life,” Julia says. “A lot of people look at resale value, but they’re not going anywhere.” The project moved forward with quality –– not cost –– as the top priority. The couple was adamant about craftsmanship and detail, hiring skilled subcontractors locally and even flying out of the country to meet with Canadian cabinetmaker Bellini to design the kitchen.

They bumped up ceilings, bulked up trim and moldings, substituted walnut for oak on the floors, soundproofed bedrooms with spray foam insulation, upgraded inoperable windows to casement and awning windows, and added square footage to the hearth room and kitchen. Significant time went into designing the kitchen and affiliated areas around the garage entry. “The laundry, pantry and mud closet have truly made life better,” Aimee says. “I love living in this beautiful space, but, LEFT... proponent of great hotel bathrooms, says, “You need to feel like you’ve gone someplace.” Aimee actually did go someplace earlier this year –– Wynn Las Vegas hotel –– and said to herself: “My bathroom’s better.” The success of the project didn’t come without bumps. Decision-making these days can be complicated, with literally hundreds of choices in products. “This wasn’t four faucets to pick from; it was the world,” Aimee says. Plus, construction dragged on more than five months rather than the projected six weeks, and, halfway through, Mark took a job in Albany, so Aimee became the general contractor, and Julia became marriage counselor as much as designer. Mark had a middle-of-the-night epiphany and reconfigured the entire bathroom layout, splitting the two vanities and extending up the curved bank of windows from the lower level addition. “From a financial point, we already had the foundation in, so why would I have all this and not take advantage of these windows? he asks. Designer Gary Lueckenotto enhanced this already stately South Plaza home with distinct plantings that add structure and color. A small lawn is just one component of a holistic design that incorporates bursts of green, blue, silver and burgundy. Yew, boxwood, holly and spruce offer the structural surroundings to the beds, while ground covers soften the garden floor. Holly, hornbeam, maple and crabapple –– all lit for evening enjoyment –– complement the scale of the home with their vertical accents; oakleaf hydrangea foliage provides textural contrast. Cast iron and stone urns filled with seasonal color grace the pathways and porch. Of particular interest is an arched “garden gate” made of trained columnar hornbeam that leads to the side and backyard. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

The grounds of this Mission Hills property, as they previously existed, are in the Smithsonian Archives as a significant American garden, so when a large addition and pool area were added to the home, designer Reed Dillon was called upon to adjust the garden design with new focal points and allées –– and have it all approved by the Missouri State Historic Preservation Office. New views from the addition became opportunities, but other areas were to be left alone. In both instances, the scale of each space was carefully considered or preserved, whether it was meant for 200 guests or as an intimate getaway. Sculpture throughout offers an air of grandeur, while a kitchen garden for growing fruits and vegetables provides hands-on learning opportunities for the grandkids. Mature-sized plantings of paperbark maples, specimen wisteria and tree hydrangea, and Norway spruce give the new gardens an aged feel, as though they were always part of the original design.

BEST OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE
Rosehill Gardens PHOTOS BY JAMES MAIDHOF
Times have changed since this Craftsman-style limestone home was built in 1918, but its renewed appearance remains classic even while modern-day amenities have been incorporated. Designer Michael Ashley worked with the fifth-generation homeowners to create a geometric series of spaces that connect purposefully around the home with family gathering points that include a martini lounge, large and ornate fireplace, and pergola with custom dining table, all with a backdrop of stone retaining walls and specialty plantings. The lounge area was laid out as the most important new element for the corner of the existing pool, which was updated with a new limestone pool deck. The fireplace –– the centerpiece of the space, featuring a generous seating hearth and hidden firewood storage –– recreates the dramatic dimensions of the historic tall and wide chimney at the front of the home. A dilapidated pergola was reconstructed to model the original, and many of the family plants were reused. “Moon lighting” was added from the trees, paths and pergola, while inimitable fixtures topping the masonry columns throughout provide the finishing historical touch.

The sound of water infiltrates the various outdoor rooms of this Stilwell residence after the owners decided to enhance an existing water feature. Landscape Architect Brick Owens added dynamically scaled boulders and focal points to portray a Zen-like mountain water stream and lushly landscaped beds. Groupings of boulders along the creek are situated at primary vistas and create a playful pathway with a variety of miniature elements to entertain the senses of young and old alike. The edge of an entertainment patio butts right up to the water’s edge, while benches and a seat wall provide intimate interaction with the pond. Just behind the main pond, a stone bridge connects to a play area tucked in the corner of the lot and reflects the same character of a new wine room entry at the house.

BEST THEMED LANDSCAPE
Rosehill Gardens P H O T O S B Y M AT T K O C O U R E K
In a home epitomizing authentic Italian design and antiques, it only made sense that the landscape would follow suit. From front to back, inside to out, the essence of Florence and Rome permeate the scenery. A dramatic bank of flagstone steps leads from the street to the stone entry tower into a walled courtyard. Designer Steven Heichel created formal gardens off the master bedroom’s private terrace featuring boxwood hedges and ground cover growing among the seams of a patio, accenting statuary and specimen pieces carved above ´ an outdoor fireplace. The piece de résistance is a courtyard with a central fountain reminiscent of Italian plazas, surrounded by formal knot gardens as well as rose-cutting gardens with topiary trees and spiral junipers to maintain the theme. Crushed gravel paths throughout the grounds mimic old European estates.

Under the Kansan Sun We dined al fresco on the well-manicured grounds of Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery for KCH&G’s August Cooking School. Bringing an Italian influence to the table, Carey Weir, owner of Salt Catering, with help from husband John, delivered a five-course, farm-to-table, family-style meal that started with appetizers in the outdoor living room (made of hay bales) before moving the party to the patio. Meat delicacies, including beef tongue and heart and marrow bones, along with short ribs and grilled beef, were compliments of Walnut Crest Cattle Co. Patrons also enjoyed a local art display, live music by guitarist Jeff Barrett, and an evening stroll through the vineyard led by owners Dennis and Cindy Reynolds.

Put celery, garlic, carrots, onions and fresh herbs in the food processor until almost puréed. Put olive oil in pan and cook vegetables over medium heat for about 10 minutes. Put pepperoni in processor and purée then add to vegetables. Cook for 5 minutes then deglaze pan with braising liquid. (Note: If tomatoes are chunky, process as well.) Add tomatoes and leftover rib bones as well as additional braising liquid until desired consistency. Cook on stove top for 3-5 hours.

Use your favorite pasta recipe and roll to desired thickness. Stuff pasta with beef/ricotta mixture. Once you have formed ravioli, boil a pot of salted water. Add ravioli and boil for 4-5 minutes, while heating sauce in a large pan. Add ravioli to pan. Add pasta water, if needed, to thin sauce. Plate and top with freshly grated Parmesan and fresh basil.
