Message from the KCSA President Wow! What a year! Our organization has embraced change as well as new fundraising efforts this year. We have honored past traditions that allowed us to win a national award for excellence for our Showhouse project, garnering not only local media but also distinguished national media! Having been a member since 1989, it has been wonderful watching KCSA grow and change. (We now are social-media relevant! Find us on YouTube, Pinterest and Facebook.) We are proud of our small business and its accomplishments. The Symphony Shop is winning rave reviews at the beautiful Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. But our Showhouse boutique and cafe are popular destinations, too. The Showhouse also can be rented for private events (visit showhouse.org for news and special events). In addition, we are honored to play a major role in ensuring children get to experience the music of the Kansas City Symphony, a wonderful and supportive partner as well as our beneficiary. We appreciate this year’s homeowners for contacting us to have their historic home be our 44th Designers’ Showhouse. We are already seeking our next one. I also want to thank the Symphony, designers, members, volunteers, sponsors and our own families who have to be on stand-by during “Showhouse season.” Tracey Hawkins, KCSA President

Message from the Designers’ Showhouse Vice Presidents

A huge thank you to the Kansas City community for supporting our fundraising efforts at the Symphony Designers’ Showhouse for 44 consecutive years. This year you will visit the historic Bent-Ward house for a second time as it was the 16th Junior Women’s Symphony Alliance (JWSA) Designers’ Showhouse in 1985. The Junior Women’s Philharmonic Association was formed in 1961 to promote and ensure the continuance of orchestra music in our city. Today, we are known as the Kansas City Symphony Alliance (KCSA) with membership open to both women and men who share the original goals of our founders. Our fundraising efforts provide children the opportunity to attend Youth Concerts, Kinder Koncerts and Link Up at the new Kauffman Center for Performing Arts. The excitement expressed by the children is an inspiration to our KCSA members who usher at these events. Students also can get involved by participating in Symphony Designers’ Showhouse. For the first time this year, an area high school, Olathe East, will transform an area in our Showhouse, while design students at Johnson County Community College have been working wonders at our Symphony Designers’ Showhouses for 28 years. We would like to invite you to share in the fun by becoming a member of KCSA. Cathey Bossert and Nancy Egan Powell, Showhouse Vice Presidents

Design Area # 1 Grand Lawn & Veranda

The Grand Lawn called for regal color and contours to complement the imposing house façade. The plantation-style architecture and rich history of the neighborhood inspired Southern-style perennials such as lilacs and azaleas. The designers honored the old trees and brick by cleaning up around the existing Illustration courtesy of By the Blade Landscape Design

beds, adding dark mulch for contrast and planting annuals around the paths. Everything planted can thrive in sun or shade for a vibrant landscape throughout the season. As the crowning glory, they paid homage to historical gardening trends by flanking the walkway with Carambas (red rose shrubs), a brand new disease-resistant species that is compact and will bloom continuously from spring through fall. As a final

Using existing evergreens and a unique fence as the perimeter of this additional outdoor living area, a more private and protected sitting area was created. A seating wall with columns and a garden bench offer relaxing spots to enjoy the new fountain, along with the colors and textures of new plantings. Stone edging and dark brown mulch will complement the natural colors in the flagstone and surrounding landscape.

vintage settee. A custom-made cube ottoman creatively turns stripes into pattern. Hand-applied trim accents the elegant lines of the custom linen window treatments, while original art from local artists fill the walls. A vintage brass peacock coffee table creates just the right amount of glamorous flair while grounding the smoky, modern handblown glass chandelier above. This space deftly mixes modern with vintage, classic with trendy and luxurious with “sentimental value only.” The color scheme is intentionally minimal with the designer’s signature palette of black, soft white and a mix of metals. After all, life is colorful enough! The limited color scheme allows the eye to settle and rest,

The goal of the romantic Frenchinspired entryway caters to the modern-day design need for classic form adapted for comfort. Keeping all existing trim, railings and banister with the original stains/paint colors, the new classic gray paint on the walls conjures images of times past. Showcased on the east wall are Louis XVI chairs upholstered in a vintage boucle fabric accompanied by an Empire/Regency-style demilune. Under the stairs, you’ll find a petite salon chair accompanied by a Louis XVI accent table, creating a vintage refuge from the modern day.

Traditional shapes in a contemporary palette give this living room an element of surprise. The walls are covered with a rich kiwi snakeskin-textured wallcovering, while a taupe-and-black strié silk-covered sofa is adorned with pythonprint pillows with an appliquéd-embroidered pillow for a splash of color. The barrel-back wing chairs’ traditional frame is upholstered in a taupe-and-black zebra velvet fabric, while an oversized iron-and-glass cocktail table has gilt accents, as do the pair of painted Italian arm chairs boasting silky kiwi-and-magenta Bali-style medallion cushions. Behind the sofa is a Gesso gilt console table with antiqued mirrored doors. A classic web-back chair with magenta velvet seat and appliquéd-embroidered silk back was the inspiration for this unexpected color scheme. Magenta silk drapery panels on gold rods frame the view of the gardens. Complementing both the room height and plantation windows are Silhouettes by Hunter Douglas, which enhance the room’s natural light. The traditional shell is crowned with a frieze and lined with a silver shimmer stripe wallcovering by the Kenneth James Collection for Brewster. The original built-in corner cabinet is touched up for grand delight. “Let us entertain you” is the mood of the environment, from the beautiful piano, whimsical dragon love seat and pattern play rug to the playful accent light, wireless sound system and the libation lounge. Seating is comfortable in the upbeat wing chairs with show-stopping red accents. Maestro, if you please…

The stunning crystal-and-platinum chandelier continues the graceful elegance of the deep moldings throughout, banister rail and turned spindles of the staircase. The walls are finished in a faux finish of platinum metallic foils and textures layered over khaki paint. The accent wall along the base of the staircase features bronze metallic shades and damask stencil motifs with embedded glass beads catching the light from the wall sconce on the opposite wall. The existing honey caramel wood tones of the floor and banister railing were used as the

The inspiration for the room was the well-traveled history of the homeowners. The room is an escape from the daily grind and evokes a simpler time of reading books and playing games with friends and family. The textures have a rich European feel with an aged English leather Chesterfield sofa with an updated velvet cushion. The club chairs are inspired by travels to Africa with the Kuba cloth-inspired pillows and the garden stools from the Far East. The owners infused their treasured antiques from their French heritage: an 18th-century armoire and commode and a collection of French wax seals. They updated the look with a contemporary rosewood coffee table. It is topped off with bookcases filled with leather-bound books and lined with antique stamps, when mail was delivered by people rather than a keystroke. Remaining true to the home’s historic roots, this dramatic Greek Revival design takes its cues from classical elements of the later Neoclassical-American Empire period and marries it with the latest interior design forecasts. This modern take on Greek Revival holds true to its classical roots, yet is executed with bold style. Empire-styled incorporating

furnishings,

motifs, anchor this space and provide a sense of order and stability to the room. But the subdued color choices of Greek Revival interiors are replaced with bold colors and strong design trends like over-scaled lighting, eclectic art, and unique accents highlighted with brass and gold. The result is a space that’s rooted in history yet decidedly vibrant and modern. DESIGNER:

repurposed armoire on which the role of comfortable caretaker is bestowed. This entrance provides a tranquil transition zone to and from the outside world. As the central hub for information and storage vessel for outdoor apparel and accessories, the reimagined armoire anchors not only the family space but the entrance as well. No ordinary mudroom, it is accented with colorful Turkish rugs and kilims. Overhead, the stamped tin ceiling and metal lantern provide a nod to the days when the home was built. The space provides a concept for integrating items that are loved into functional, repurposed pieces that are needed and can be used in everyday life. DESIGNER:

The refinished walnut cabinets are returned to their original glory and enhanced with new bin pull hardware and textured glass doors. Given this unique opportunity, these high-school designers wanted to design a room that captured a sense of their everyday lives as students — this space is a combination of the personal aesthetics of 12 aspiring designers. It represents a unique twist on a classic style of design. With their personal take on Olathe East colors and snapshots of each designer, they brought a creative energy to the room. Their choice of lighting, both natural and artificial, keeps the space looking fresh and bright, while the use of teal, with touches of burnt orange, gives the observer an opportunity to see Olathe East’s Visual Design Studio’s interesting perspective of life and design.

The industrial-styled craft studio provides lots of spacious work surfaces and tons of storage in the vintage lockers, wire baskets and boxes. The window treatment features simple sheer panels to let in as much natural light as possible. The neutral colors of the painted floor, sweater rug and textured walls soften the industrial feel for an interesting contrast, as well as welcome a few pops of color.

This secluded conversation spot is where one can have a nightcap and cigar away from the crowd. Removing dead and dying material followed by heavy pruning got the existing shrubs in shape; the tree stumps were turned into colorful planters. The existing limestone boulders and rocks line the pathways through the garden, while the paths feature crushed gravel, reminiscent of traditional English gardens. Natural stone pillar lights guide the way, and, coupled with additional up-lights, a dramatic nighttime effect was achieved. Shade-loving plants, such as azaleas and rhododendrons, give a brilliant burst of springtime color as well as wintertime structure. Ferns, hostas and Palace Purple Coral Bells add season-long foliage interest. Lastly, handmade Adirondack chairs provide a comfortable place to relax.

Starting around the existing Koi pond, the designers added colorful annuals and mulch. Original azaleas, rhododendrons and other old-style plantings remain, adding to the historical yet charming setting. Comfortable furniture and a fire table complete the outdoor relaxation area, but it’s the combination of water and fire that’ll warm the heart and soothe the soul. LED lighting on dimmer controls can be programmed through an iPod or mobile device to change settings up to every half hour for ultimate ambiance control.

Through expert planning, design and installation, architectural features are accentuated, landscaping elements become centerpieces, and the water garden comes to life. In the swimming pool garden, the 18’-by-38’ freeform pool, built by Banks Pool & Spa Design in 1998, features bullnose brick coping and a natural Woodland Blend stone waterfall. Other finishes include porcelain “verde” tile and a gray marcite plaster. The 1,300-square-foot decking was created with random Pennsylvania Bluestone. Kansas City Symphony Music Director Once again, the combined efforts, creativity and devotion of our great team of volunteers have come together in spectacular fashion. As always this 44th annual Showhouse is sure to be one of the most original and welcoming events of our season and, at the same time, one of the most fun. The Showhouse is not only a great stage for some of the most stylish and originative design in our city, it is also another reminder of why our Kansas City Symphony can rightfully boast having the finest and most effective volunteers of any orchestra in the country. I am very proud of what we are accomplishing at the Symphony, how the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and our concerts at Helzberg Hall have changed music in the city forever, and how our city is being recognized more and more as a great center for music and the arts. We are all together in this ongoing realization of our vision, and having the commitment and energy of so many great partners is nothing short of pure gold. A heartfelt Bravo! to this year's president of the Kansas City Symphony Alliance, Tracey Hawkins, and Showhouse vice presidents, Cathey Bossert and Nancy Powell, and to everyone who helped design, decorate and organize this wonderful house and magnificent event. We are lucky to have you all on our team!

Michael Stern Music Director, Kansas City Symphony

Kansas City Symphony Assistant Conductor Greetings! We are so grateful and blessed for the enthusiasm and service of all the members of the Kansas City Symphony Alliance who make the Designers' Showhouse possible. Your energy and diligence on this project make possible essential Symphony programs, such as our Education Concerts, which were attended by nearly 25,000 grade-school students last year; our Inside Music master class series; and the many free performances we present over the course of the season, including Labor Day Pops in the Park, which bring music into the lives of tens of thousands of Kansas Citians each year. I feel so lucky to be a part of such an excellent organization and an equally phenomenal community. It has been wonderful to get to know so many of you during the course of my first season in Kansas City. Your warmth and support have been overwhelming, and your commitment to the musical life of the Symphony is truly inspiring. When I moved to Kansas City, I immediately felt the camaraderie of this community. There is the quiet but strong attitude that we’re all in this together, all striving in our own way to make Kansas City the great place that it is. It is that same attitude that makes the Kansas City Symphony one of the finest orchestras in the country. We are all in this together — the musicians, staff, board, our incredible audience members and the vital work of organizations like the Symphony Alliance. Thank you for all of the amazing work that you continue to do!
