worthy of sharing. With the rush of the holiday season behind us, it’s nice to get back to spending time at home, especially when you have a kitchen like the ones featured in this issue. A kitchen remodel –– start brainstorming on page 28 –– might just top the list as a New Year’s resolution! But, if you hosted family and friends during the holidays, maybe you need to get out of the house. A weekend in Rocheport, Mo., will leave you rejuvenated after touring the winery (and popping a few bottles), shopping quaint antique shops and galleries, and enjoying someone else’s cooking. Or, save the traveling for another day and brush up on new recipes from Chef Laurie Haney or get lost in a cozy, movie-like winter garden. (It’s a Wonderful Life comes to mind...) Best wishes for a happy, safe and healthy New Year.

KITCHEN Kudos These five culinary spaces deserve recognition for their custom design and functionality. T E X T

HIDDEN GEM On the outskirts of KCMO, a Craftsman-style home with a romantic Prairie-style kitchen was designed for hosting family and friends. “The kitchen’s design had to work 90 percent of the time for two people and 10 percent of the time for a large crowd,” explains designer/owner Kristeen Armstrong-Scott, CKD. The owners’ wish list included integrating open, functional traffic areas that lead out to a large patio overlooking acreage and a pond with the rest of the home. To accommodate their demands, Armstrong-Scott knocked down walls to create a practical and functional work triangle and maximize storage space. Both homeowners have their own specialties: he grills; she bakes. And to host frequent parties, it’s necessary to have two dishwashers, two stoves, two sinks, a big refrigerator and freezer, and a food warmer. “We’ve had 30-plus people all in the kitchen helping out, and it’s been marvelous, just perfect,” the homeowner says. Quartz countertops cap large, deep drawers for pots and pans, while the spacious island is home to custom cubbies, additional storage and an elevated bar top for meal presentation. The buffet, complete with ice maker, stores and displays collectibles and glassware and serves as the beverage station during parties. Lighting, once an issue in the relatively dark space, was improved with the addition of two skylights; pendant lights over the island; and track, task and cornice lighting. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

SMALL-SPACE SENSATION Good things do come in small packages. At least that’s the case with Eric Deering’s newly remodeled kitchen in his 2,400-square-foot 1940s Armour Hills home. With help from designer/co-owner Sue Shinneman, CKD, of Kitchen Studio: Kansas City and interior designer Kurt Knapstein, Deering turned his choppy, cramped and poorly functioning main level — with secluded kitchen — into an open living space that’s conducive for entertaining. “I wanted to use the space I have in a better way,” he says. Numerous walls came down as the design rearranged space, although the look respects the age of the house. Black-painted custom cabinets boldly contrast the Calcutta Gold marble island top; quartz counters around the kitchen’s perimeter replace Formica; and a white, glazed, beveled subway tile backsplash extends to the ceiling. The original windows were salvaged, keeping intact some of the home’s original charm and style. Sconces on either side of a bow-out window nook provide additional lighting, setting a dramatic mood in the evening. The platter displayed above came from Deering’s great great grandparents; a matching bowl and plates are on display in the dining room. He splurged on a commercial Viking range and Sub-Zero refrigerator for a hint of industrial style, balancing them with built-in shelving for a large cookbook collection and kitchen knickknacks. DELIGHTFULLY CHEERFUL You can’t help but be happy in this kitchen. From Sherwin-Williams’ Gusto Gold walls to white Danby marble countertops and backsplash, this Leawood kitchen is ready to be used; even the homeowners’ 9-year-old daughter gets in on the baking action — she’s the cupcake queen in this home. The space — formerly a dated Country French — features a pantry armoire, with pull-out shelving, lots of storage and a double wine fridge, as well as a multipurpose island with appliance garage; drawers and shelving with custom-fit inserts for everything; and a large countertop for food prep, dinner time and homework. “We spent a whole day deciding what went where are how to use it,” says Randy Sisk, owner of Kitchens by Kleweno. Custom cabinetry throughout features three different kinds of wood with varying finish shades and soft-close drawers and doors, while the kitchen’s perimeter houses double ovens and microwaves and an enlarged window unit. White Italian light fixtures hide an unexpected surprise in the delicately carved floral motif on the inside. But the main conversation piece has to be the custom-designed beverage bar with stemware center cabinet, fridge and ice maker, Red Dragon granite, and handmade ceramic tile backsplash — a transitionally abstract depiction of Heartland wheat — designed by Genevieve Hamel, AKBD, of Kitchens by Kleweno and created by artists/owners Jake and Julie Bond of Archival Designs. “It’s like a big puzzle,” Sisk says. CHARMING REMODEL This turn-of-the-century Craftsman-style home in the historic Longfellow neighborhood was always true to its roots…except for a kitchen remodel in the 1980s. Homeowners Paul and Alana Scott approached Greg Rothers of Rothers Design/Build about restoring the kitchen to a likeness of the home’s original era while updating with modern conveniences for day-to-day use and better flow for entertaining. Opening up a wall between the kitchen and dining room and adding a small two-story addition afforded them a bigger, more functional kitchen, which now connects, in many ways, to the rest of the house. “It turned out better than I could have imagined,” Paul says. “They paid as much attention to the outside as they did the inside.” A dual-purpose island made of reclaimed oak with a butcher block top — Alana’s favorite part of the kitchen — is centered in the space, creating room for preparation and seating for guests, who have a direct view of the flat-screen TV and the outdoors. The perimeter’s cherry cabinets were capped with new crown molding to seamlessly match the rest of the interior trim, but the case moldings around the windows and doors share the reclaimed oak, as does the wet bar and dog credenza down the hall. The glazed subway tile backsplash harkens to the styling of a previous time, while stainless steel appliances add the desired modern flair.

LA CUCINA MODERNA “We gravitate toward Italian design,” say homeowners Paetra and Gino Serra, who took an Italian magazine and ideas to Architect Dominique Davison of DRAW Architecture + Urban Design (formerly Davison Architecture + Urban Design) and Ian Hurst of Hurst Construction, hopeful of incorporating some of the same design ideas in their Brookside home. Ditching the kitchen’s previous country, barn door-style cabinets, this space now features white, glossy, customized IKEA cabinetry; one wall of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry with a built-in refrigerator, microwave/oven and electric oven; and floating cabinetry inset into a bamboo wall panel — and all within the petite original footprint. “It’s modern, compact and really easy to use,” Paetra says of her new kitchen. The stainless steel counters and sink are flanked by custom storage slots for utensils on one end and a five-burner range with hood on the other, presenting the minimalist look they were seeking while fitting in the allotted space. Deep pull-out drawers make room for pots and pans…and art supplies for their daughters, Alessia, 10, and Gioia, 7. “It has proven to be a great design, has stood up to our kids and gets a lot of use, which is exactly what we wanted,” Paetra says. The Italian-made Kartell table (and light fixture) with fun, colorful chairs add a pop of color and a (durable) seating area to the kitchen. Decorating the space above are 12 framed calendar photos of San Vito di Leguzzano (Vicenza), Italy, Gino’s mom’s hometown. The works of art hanging by the ovens were made by a local artist and purchased at the Brookside Art Fair.

Dreams Come True A dream home for one family raises thousands of dollars for numerous others battling childhood diseases.
Compiled by Brooke McGrath
SUMMIT CUSTOM HOMES IS ON BOARD AGAIN TO BUILD A CUSTOMIZED HOME IN Creekmoor, a Cooper community in Raymore, Mo., for the 2013 Kansas City St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was founded in 1962 and celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. The organization’s mission is to “advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.” It has treated children from all 50 states and around the world and has developed protocols that have helped push the overall survival rate of childhood cancers from less than 20 percent 40 years ago to 80 percent today. But possibly the most heartwarming fact about the organization is
Upcoming Events:
that no family is ever turned away for their inability to pay. The St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway in Kansas City is in its eighth year, having raised $950,000 in 2012 and selling out of tickets in both 2011 and 2012. This year’s goal is to sell 10,000 tickets, which will raise $1 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to St. Jude.

evergreen? Are there seeds and berries for birds?” Ironically, deciduous shrubs are some of the Martinaches’ garden-design staples year-round. Their stems provide unexpected texture and color. Carmen views the decorative flowers, foliage and vines that blossom only in summer as support for the more basic garden “constants.” “We use Bob’s hobby of photography in the winter to reflect on what worked in the garden the previous year and what we want to change the next year,” Carmen explains. “We can look through our garden photos and remember which plants were standouts and which plants need to be moved and something else planted in their place.” The Martinache gardens also have become a favorite spot for wildlife. Recent guests include ambling groups of deer, a mother rabbit building her nest and a barred owl that seemed all too eager to pose for a 15-minute photo session for Bob. “We have even seen a bobcat just 15 feet away from us, drinking water from the fountain by our front door,” Carmen says.

The couple suggests that all avid gardeners make the most of the resting time that the colder season allows by spending time in the garden to contemplate design, reading articles for new plant ideas and even attending gardening lectures. “The most important thing about winter is that it brings a peace no other season can match,” Carmen says. That sense of peace has become a welcome relief for the Martinaches. “We actually look forward to the winter months that give us time to rest, reflect, dream and discuss,” Carmen says. “However, come mid-February into March, when we notice the daffodils peeking out of the soil, we’re ready to get out in the garden. We can’t wait to get our hands in the dirt and help Mother Nature create the miracles that give us so many rewards.”
RIGHT... The butterfly garden, as seen in winter, features healthy evergreens, Miss Kim lilacs and iron butterflies.
BELOW LEFT... Snow-colored evergreens flanking the porch keep the outdoor scene lively in the colder months.
BELOW RIGHT... The striking color of Red Twig dogwood branches offsets an imposing, snow-covered stone wall.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN
Multigenerational Remodeling Is Smart and Profitable ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THE Remodeling Industry (NARI), there are clear signs that consumer confidence is on the upswing. Despite the fact that homeowners are realistic and know that their home values have fallen, they have made the decision to stay in their homes and make improvements. In fact, many homeowners say the economy has given them incentive to stay in their homes longer than they originally thought, so they are paying for multigenerational improvements. In 2010, a Pew Research Center analysis found that 16.9 percent of the population has at least two adult generations living under one roof, and this is on the upswing. This could be due to adult children moving back home, aging parents being cared for in the home, or grandparents moving in to care for young children. Since different generations have different needs and wants, home remodeling trends

FLOORING OPTIONS
Beautiful Floors for Every Room SELECTING FLOORING WITHIN A HOME IS ONE OF THE MOST important choices a homeowner will make and oftentimes one of the most difficult. It is not enough to love a specific flooring material; the flooring has to be conducive to the lifestyles of a home’s inhabitants. Keeping a floor in good shape and clean should never be difficult or time-consuming. If it is, it might be time to look at a new material for your floor. In the past few years, the popularity of porcelain tile has grown exponentially, and for good reason. It is low-maintenance, durable, attractive, and it rarely becomes scratched or chipped. It is also available in a wide range of styles, colors and finishes and is surprisingly affordable. Porcelain is denser than ceramic and much more versatile and might be the ideal flooring for high-traffic areas within a home. The current trend in porcelain tile is to install much PHOTO COURTESY OF SVB WOOD FLOORS

Happy Healthy Using natural, organic food from Whole Foods Market, an energetic Chef Laurie Haney prepped and delivered a nutritious four-course meal at The Cooking Studio at Whole Foods. Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery also was in the house with appropriate wine pairings for each course. Welcoming the season in style, owner Cindy Reynolds created a spiced apple cider with their Avalon wine, pairing it with Chef Laurie’s homemade apple pie for dessert.

Butternut Squash Bisque serves 8 INGREDIENTS:
1 medium onion, medium diced ½ C celery, medium diced 1 medium butternut squash, peeled and cubed 2 1/2 C chicken or vegetable stock 1 C heavy cream 1 fresh sage leaf 2 sprigs fresh thyme ½ t fresh rosemary leaves 2 T olive oil salt and white pepper to taste

Brussels sprouts and potatoes to be paired with the halibut.
Thanks to our guest volunteers!
DIRECTIONS:
In a stockpot on medium-high heat, add olive oil and sauté diced onion and celery until translucent but not browned. Add butternut squash to the stockpot and cook for another 2 minutes, not browning the vegetables. Slowly add the stock and fresh herbs and let simmer on medium-low until the squash is tender and the flavors immerse. (NOTE: Chef Laurie lets her soup cook on low for an hour to get as much flavor as possible without losing all of the vitamins.) After the soup is ready, it’s time to purée. Pull out the sage leaf, thyme sprigs and as much of the rosemary as possible as it can turn bitter. Using an immersion blender, slowly purée the soup in the stockpot. If you don’t own an immersion blender, ladle the soup in a blender or food processor until blended and transfer back into the stockpot. Once the soup is blended, add the heavy cream and salt and pepper. Serve hot with (homemade) croutons as a garnish!

of the Mighty Mo. A popular destination for people who want to roam the town, taste wine at Les Bourgeois’ stunning bluff-top bistro and ride the Katy Trail, the Yates House is comprised of two adjacent buildings: a 1991 reproduction of an 1850s roadhouse and the next-door Garden House, built in 1840. In addition to a welcoming brand of hospitality, Dixie and Conrad’s trademark as innkeepers is excellent cuisine that guests enjoy in the Garden House’s sun-drenched dining room. True to the couple’s attentionto-detail nature (they are both retired nurses), cooking classes were eventually added. “The bed is important in our business, but so is the food,” Dixie explains.
