about the artist COVER PHOTOGRAPHER DAVE PETERMAN

The Parade of Homes program’s cover photo is a reflection of Quandary Peak in the beaver ponds at McCullough Gulch. Photography has been my avocation for almost twenty years and I especially enjoy capturing the beauty of Colorado and other western states in my photos. In addition to the cover of this magazine, my photos can be found in the coffee table book, Capture My Colorado, and the halls and offices of the Summit County Hospital. For my “real” job I am CFO and owner of a company that provides residential and other services to individuals with developmental disabilities and related conditions.

Specialty Wood Products is a nationwide retail lumber yard selling building materials to general contractors, deck builders and homeowners. Our specialties include siding, decking, heavy timbers and SWISSPEARL®. Whatever your needs include—Cedar, Redwood, Doug Fir, Glulams, Custom Milling/Pre-Staining— we can help.

MAKE A DECORATING PREDICTION…a good way to stay sane amid the trend forecasts is to think about how each forecasted trend resonates with your own life. If it doesn’t reflect you, don’t follow the masses.

YOUR STYLE IS INFLUENCED BY… Feng Shui and its five natural elements…. metal, water, wood, fire and earth. Each one of these elements represents a shape, color and a season and can be found in the doors, walls, architectural features, furniture and accessories of your home. All these elements must be in balance in order to have good energy flow and a healthy home.

EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE… Positive energy through Feng Shui. Feng Shui can influence the way a person feels when they enter your home. As a Certified Practitioner of Intuitive Feng Shui, I help create a home that embraces my clie nts with a sense of comfort, beauty, style and inspiration. Though no one will probably notice they’ve consciously applied the concept, they will probably notice how calm and peaceful they feel in their environment. There’s an overall sense of balance and harmony, and the end result is an increased feeling of serenity. SHARE WITH US ONE OF YOUR GO-TO DESIGN RESOURCES… Denver Design District. It is like walking through the pages of a luxury interior design magazine. They have an unprecedented selection of the finest home furnishings most of which will never be seen in any retail store. Before

description Born in 1982 as a two-bed, two-bath plus threebed, two-bath modular duplex (delivered by truck as four prebuilt modules) this property has been totally transformed into a contemporary 5,500 square foot dwelling by the design and build team at Trilogy Partners. When the owners first approached Trilogy Partners, their aspirations for this aging property were rather conservative. Maybe a fresh coat of paint and some new fixtures. After all, anything more than that would be extremely difficult, maybe impossible, given the property’s location on a steep bank high above the road. After meeting with the Trilogy team, a new plan began to take shape as Trilogy encouraged the owners to focus on wishes rather than obstacles. Once the concept was in place Trilogy engaged Matthew Stais Architects. As the architects worked on pulling the wish list into an architectural design

that made practical and esthetic sense, Trilogy Design paced them by creating a three dimensional virtual model so that the owners would be able to “experience” their home and make completely informed design decisions many months before construction began. The Trilogy process, and the model, created a seamless bridge between architectural and interior design so that form and function, both structural and esthetic, emerged together to become one. The owners could see it, experience it, explore it. Now, that once humble duplex had morphed into a 3,300 square foot primary residence with a two car garage, a wonderful open living plan with tremendous western views and exposures. The secondary unit became a smaller 2,200 square foot showpiece with equally enormous views, its own garage and entry. The owners were happy. They loved their new home. The obstacles had been overcome. The Trilogy-Stais design team process had left nothing to chance. Now it was time to build.

95 VICTORY LANE BUILDER APEX MOUNTAIN HOMES, INC

BRECKENRIDGE

DESCRIPTION High above the town of Breckenridge, situated in the old growth forest of Warriors Preserve, stands a home as majestic as the Bald Mountain Peak it overlooks. As Boreas Pass beckons, this home answers with an architectural feel right out of the glory days of the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad that frequented this area 75 years ago. Featuring massive log columns, native stone footings, weathered siding, and rusty metal roofing, this home blends into the surrounding mountainside as if it has been there since historic times. Awakened from its dormancy in 2013 by Apex Mountain Homes, the Victory Revival reveals its singular character the moment you step foot inside the front door. No longer in the days of old, this interior boasts the clean lines, sleek finishes, and modern technology of the 21st century. This home’s renewed life shouts “big city” in the middle of small town Colorado. This large luxury home effectively retains intimacy while allowing family and guests to spread out. The contemporary granite-wrapped kitchen island sits amidst custom cabinetry and the newest commercial-grade, stainless steel appliances, with eye-popping views of Baldy just over your shoulder. Custom wire-brushed wood floors connect the spacious great room with the action and life of the party in the kitchen, the fun of the rec room on the lower level, or the seclusion of the sitting area of the loft. Each master suite has its own fireplace and spa-like bathroom retreat, equipped with a steam shower and custom soaking tub. Well-insulated walls and high-efficiency windows are among the energy-efficient features that are in harmony with the Summit Sustainable Building Code. “Built tight and ventilated right” comes to

mind when experiencing the fresh mountain air brought in by the ventilation system, and nothing speaks toasty better than the warmth of efficient in-floor heat. This home is a must-see masterpiece handcrafted by log artisans in British Columbia. Enjoy the signature large diameter Western Red Cedar Logs, Alaskan Flared Tails, Swedish Cope fit, arched doorways and open curved staircase, all done by hand. Though the home took a year to build, the logs were tagged and transported on four trucks then re-erected by our skilled crew in only one week! This custom floor plan was a collaboration of Mountain Log Homes of Colorado’s local team, the homeowner’s desires, and Pioneer Log Homes of B.C.’s drafting team. This 5-acre lot required fire mitigation of over 500 beetle kill trees. The site offers tranquility and privacy while still close to town and ski area. The covered outdoor living space gives the home a second great room with deep seated furniture, “carved-in” log picnic table and bench, and 16-foot stone wood burning fireplace. The nature-loving homeowners have lots of special touches—take the time to locate the carved bear in the ridge beam, red-tail hawk by Hollow Log Carving, and other artistic wildlife touches throughout. This Texas family designed the home for family gatherings with open kitchen, bunk room and lots of conversational areas. The Steinway piano is equipped with electronic player system…but it’s not all for show, the family does play! Although this custom home is not for sale, you can experience the special ambiance of log home living through weekly luxury rentals at riverridgerentals.com; search for Moose Ridge Cabin. Better yet, call us to design and build your one-of-a-kind dream home.

Breckenridge

description Nestled in the trees at the base of Peak 8, this 6,600 square foot mining-inspired home was designed to look as if it has always been on the site, but with all of today’s modern day amenities. The exterior mining look of the home is achieved using a mix of rusted metal panels, distressed beams, skip-sawn siding, and dry-stacked stones. Carrying that feel through the interior is reclaimed Wyoming snow fence and copper panels with custom patinas throughout the residence. But don’t be fooled, this home is decked out in the latest technology can offer including a Savant controlled theater, automated Lutron Lighting, a custom oxygen enrichment system, and a three-story elevator. A ridge light in the great room allows a peek of our bluebird skies as well as a view of the rusted metal-clad ‘mine shaft’ which seamlessly continues into an impressive interior fireplace design. The sunny, south-facing deck has panoramic views of Baldy Mountain, the Breckenridge Ski Resort, and the gondola carrying skiers to and from the resort— although if you lived here, you would be skiing to the resort from the back door.

description Located a short walk from Frisco’s vibrant Main Street, this home is one of five units that make up Ridgeview Court, one of Frisco’s newest developments. Each home has a completely unique design, offering variety at every turn of the head, rather than the repetitive design found in many multifamily developments. Private rooftop decks that take advantage of the 360-degree views are one of the major features included with each home. A central courtyard gives the homeowners a comfortable outdoor space right outside their door, while also providing attractive scenery to view from inside their homes. Designer and developer Nathan Glassman followed the principals of Biophilic design to create a home that provides a seamless integration from indoors to out. Many natural materials were used to accomplish this goal, including large amounts of stone and woodwork throughout the home. The central feature of the home is a large stone wall that slips between the interior and exterior through a window measuring over fifteen feet tall. The stone wall is capped on the interior with one of the home’s three fireplaces, which extends roughly 26 feet above the living room floor, making it an anchor for the home from inside and out. Glassman Companies teamed up with Mike Hurley and Tim Scanlan of Raptor Construction who were able to bring their hands on approach to the project, ensuring each home was treated as though it was a custom residence even before any of the homes were sold. Once Unit D was under contract during construction, the homeowners were able to create a truly custom home by adding features like a large steam shower, a walk-in master shower, a bubble massage tub, a fireplace and wet

bar on the lower level, and even a fireplace on the rooftop deck. In addition to the large stone wall that forms the west wall of the living room, there are several other unique features found in this home. The north wall of the kitchen is covered in rough cut beetle kill timber and features a sliding barn door made custom by Raptor Construction of the same material. The door slides open to reveal the walk-in pantry while adding to the home’s rustic feel in a sustainably responsible way. Another unique feature of the home is the roughly 300 square foot roof top deck with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The deck is completed by a large fireplace that boasts Mount Royal as a backdrop. The home also incorporates a second floor deck that enjoys plenty of sunshine and a direct view of Mount Royal.

DESCRIPTION The production of this home was a seamless collaboration between DHR Architecture & Design and McCrerey Fine Homes, LLC to create a unique multi-generational home for this international family. DHR Architecture is known for their mountain and Front Range classical architecture. Massive window walls in both the great room and two master bedroom suites allow the family fabulous views of the ski slopes at Keystone. The drywall has squared corners and returns to the windows with minimal wood trim. The home is clad in wired-brushed Western Red Cedar while finished with Telluride Gold Stone. The hardwood flooring is European wide plank, with a one of a kind finish and process specifically for this home. The Sierra Pacific Windows are made with wood harvested from a sustainable source from forests in California. Designs by Sundown did a masterful job blending the new landscaping seamlessly with natural environment. All of the furniture was designed by the Owner’s interior designer in their home country of South Africa and manufactured there. This is vital to the green building effort.
