PORTRAIT BY DEBORAH COTA

We all do it: We associate architects and interior designers with the spaces they create for other people. All it takes is a few notable projects and a designer becomes known as “the rustic guy” or “the one who uses bold colors.” But often, those hallmarks are a total departure from that pro’s personal style. And each time I make that discovery, it takes me by surprise. It really shouldn’t. A good designer has the knowledge and the eye to do justice to most any aesthetic, even if he or she would never choose to live with it at home. Even so, I was delighted to learn that after a day spent pondering the restoration of the classic Western ranch properties for which his firm is so well known, architect Paul Bertelli goes home to a compact, crisp white loft in downtown Bozeman, Montana (see it on page 114). And that Balz and Christina Arrigoni, whose company Arrigoni Woods clads some of the most spectacular mountain homes with gorgeous wood floors, live in a home (on page 130) that looks like a charming Swiss chalet from the outside and a colorful mod-in-themountains pad inside. Take a look, then send me a note and let me know what you think. I’m betting you’ll be surprised and delighted too.

TRAVEL

BROADMOOR GONE WILD IT’S A WESTERN VACATION CONUNDRUM: Do you opt for a bit of pampering at one of the high country’s luxury resorts or choose a getaway that’ll leave some trail dust on your boots? Turns out, you don’t have to choose, thanks to the Broadmoor’s Ranch at Emerald Valley, the first of several venues that will comprise the historical Colorado Springs resort’s new “Wilderness Experience.” Once a secluded retreat for the Pikes Peak Mountain Trails Camp Association, of which Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose and a handful of his millionaire buddies were the sole members, the ranch and its buildings have been transformed into a rustic-luxe mountain getaway for just 32 guests. The property’s existing log cabins and main lodge have been spruced up to meet Broadmoor standards—think cozy-classic décor, heated floors, deluxe bathrooms, plush king-size beds and wood-burning fireplaces—and take full advantage of views of Mt. Vigil, Grayback Peak and the pristine Emerald Valley. Days start bright and early with “cowboy coffee” served around the lodge fire pit at 7 a.m., and end with a fine-dining take on the traditional family-style dinner. (We like that you can choose to dine with fellow guests at a large communal table or, if you aren’t feeling so social, at your own private table.) In between, there’s a long list of outdoor adventures to try. Horseback riding? Check. Guided hikes and fly-fishing excursions? Check, check. Mountain biking? They’ve got that too, along with pristine ponds for canoeing and even an archery range. And as for that pampering, it’s just a scenic shuttle ride away at the Broadmoor, where a top-notch spa—along with three golf courses, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a fitness center—await.

IF YOU GO: The Broadmoor’s Ranch at Emerald Valley is open from May through October. All meals and most activities are included in the daily rate; Jeep tours, river rafting, fly-fishing lessons and hot-air ballooning are available for an extra charge. Rates from $435 per person, per night; kids under 6 are free. broadmoor.com/ranch ○

CLIENTS COME TO YOU FOR... the expertise I have enabling them to maximize their interior design investment, while minimizing their anxiety and uncertainty. I work with clients to guide them through the process and take the guesswork out of creating the perfect living space for their distinct style and budget. YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY… is to listen and ask questions—the success of the design product of any home lies in the ability of the interior designer to assist their client to discover and articulate their unique tastes and desires. The collective design process faithfully reflects the personality of the client. YOUR STYLE IS INFLUENCED BY... the infinite possibilities in current building and design trends. As a licensed professional, I am constantly looking for new ideas in the industry. Then, armed with that information, I work with the client to explore different options based on their personal preferences. Using that knowledge, I can work with a much broader design palette to create just the right look and feel. THE MOST INSPIRING THING YOU’VE SEEN LATELY IS... just how savvy the modern design client has become. They are individualistic, creative and empowered. They draw their inspiration from experiences in their lives—like travel, and from their surroundings—like art and architecture. They are eager to work with design professionals and appreciate the skills we bring to the table. EVERY HOME MUST HAVE… a cherished design piece—a treasured antique, an original work of art, an heirloom piece of furniture, or a fine old oriental carpet. Something that stands the test of time while integrating the old with the new, generating a rich character of interest and focus in the finished design. SHARE WITH US ONE OF YOUR GO-TO DESIGN RESOURCES. Faithfully attending the spring and fall International Furniture Market in High Point, North Carolina. THE BEST DESIGN ADVICE I’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN:

“ ‘If it’s almost square, make it square,’ attributed to Mies van der Rohe. I heard this as a young intern in Chicago and I’m not sure if Mies even said it. But it resonated with me because it encapsulates the striving for perfection and purity that is characteristic of the best works of architecture.” John Carney, Carney Logan Burke Architects

During the Telluride “Gold Season” of September and October, visitors and locals can experience spectacular foliage, world-class activities and signature events that show why Telluride is known as the festival capital of the Southwest.

What To Do

• Telluride’s mesmerizing backdrop plays host to a wide variety of outdoor activities. Capture the surrounding beauty

with adventure photo tours led by Telluride Outside, where an experienced photographer will lead the way to picturesque locations while providing hands-on photography instruction. • Visitors can take in the the San Juan Mountains with a 13-minute ride from Telluride to Mountain Village on the free gondola. The trip also accesses a network of hiking and biking trails. • The arts have always been an important part of the culture in town, dating back to the early 1900s with the opening of the Sheridan Opera House. More recently, the town was designated as a Colorado Creative District. • At the Ah Haa School for the Arts, residents and visitors of all ages can feed their artistic hunger with a variety of classes that last from a half-day to six weeks. • On the first Thursday of each month, the Telluride Art Walk highlights the town’s art galleries. Don’t miss Arroyo Telluride, a new gallery that pairs fine art with fine wine to evoke all senses, and Gallery 81435, a contemporary art space focused on the region’s local contributors. • The Telluride Film Festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary Aug. 29-Sept. 2. Cinephiles will welcome the addition of the Werner Herzog Theatre, a technologically advanced new venue. • Don’t miss the 20th anniversary of the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival, Sept. 13-15. The Black Crowes and Melissa Etheridge will headline this year. • The inaugural Telluride WOW (Work Out Weekend) Festival, Sept. 19-22, will feature fitness classes and sessions on the latest health and wellness trends. • The fourth annual Telluride Horror Show, Oct. 11-13, allows fans to experience the latest fright, fantasy, and sci-fi films in the historic Sheridan Opera House and Nugget Theatre.

Where To Eat

Telluride houses an impressive variety of culinary experiences, highlighting cuisines from around the world. Travelers looking for an authentic taste of Telluride can take in the fall foliage at Allred’s. Located at 10,551 feet, the experience begins with a gondola ride to the top where dishes like succulent bourbon-marinated elk short loin with Oregon huckleberry reduction await. Adventure seekers can work up an appetite with the Big Tire Bike and Brew Tour, which includes a stop at the Telluride Brewing Company for a taste of locally-made mountain beer. There is even a non-alcoholic option for beginners and family tours that offer indulgences before the ride back to town. At 221 South Oak, chef and owner Eliza Gavin builds her menus based on the local ingredients she selects from the Telluride Farmers’ Market.

Book It

During Gold Season, visitors can take advantage of nightly room rates starting at $109. A complete selection of fall getaway packages in Telluride and Mountain Village is available to book directly at visittelluride.com or by calling 800-245-2293. —Telluride Tourism Board A MOUNTAIN LIVING SPECIAL SECTION

George Harvey Giving Community Character

would think he fell in love yesterday. He calls her “my angel,” and marvels that at 61 years of age, she “still brings magic” into his life. Their business—The Harvey Team—is just that, “We are a team in life and business,” Harvey enthuses.

T

o most people Telluride is an intriguing dot on the map. A firstclass ski resort. The festival capital of Colorado. A picturesque mountain hamlet and destination. And it is—all that and more. That “more” is community. The people that make up the Telluride community are as diverse and colorful as the landscape and the seasons. Many are transient, but there is a fortunate handful of folks that have stuck with the town for the long run. These citizens are the heart of the true “Telluride.” One of the folks that give Telluride its character is REALTOR® George Harvey. He’s been here since 1983. And he hasn’t always been a REALTOR®. He’s washed dishes, waited tables and owned restaurants. Harvey grew up in Arkansas and fell in love with the mountains fresh out of college. An employer gave him some sage advice, something on the order of, “Son, if I were you, I’d go have the time of my life right now, while you’re young and single.” Harvey took him up on it and moved to Aspen/ Snowmass in 1973. It was, in fact, someone that Harvey met in Aspen that got him into the restaurant business. He ended up leaving the mountains to open a restaurant in Kansas City. That business was successful

and Harvey was looking at expanding his operations when the recession of 1981 put him out of business. At 31 years of age, Harvey says, “I learned you could lose everything pretty quickly.” Harvey decided to return to Colorado. “Living in a resort in the Rockies was sort of a magical life to me,” he says. Harvey picked an environment that felt good and also provided business opportunities. He chose Telluride.

Harvey credits much of his character to growing up in a divided household. His mom, a retired schoolteacher, is a lifelong Democrat. His father, a WWII vet, owned a large construction firm and was a staunch Republican. Both were politically active. Harvey tried the Democratic Party first, then the GOP. Now he’s neither. “I am who I am.” Or, as he describes himself, “an independent.” “Too many times,” Harvey says, “party leaders virtually force members to toe the party line, even when it might not be the right thing to do. That ruins it for me. It’s against everything this country was founded on— compromise.” Harvey’s politics are mostly focused on issues related to the real estate business, a business in which he has forged a formidable and successful reputation. He has served as the president of the Colorado Association of Realtors and currently sits on their board of directors. He is past chair of the Resort and Second Home Committee for the National Association of Realtors, representing more than 100,000 REALTORS® in that market niche.

An old friend, Diane Lyons, who worked at a title company, recommended that Harvey go into real estate. Another prominent local REALTOR®, Dan Shaw of Shaw and Company, hired him. “I was intrigued,” Harvey says, “I had no idea if I could make a living.” He stayed with Shaw for five years before moving to Nevasca Realty, another long-time Telluride firm. Of that era—the 90’s—Harvey says, “We all learned from each other, and the knowledge was all local knowledge.” Harvey eventually took his professional education to a state and national level. Quality was very important to me, and still is,” he confirmed.

Even more significant than his parents’ influence over his politics was the importance of their approval and respect. Regardless of his chosen profession, Harvey wanted his parents to be proud, so he determined to be the best he could be. “Your reputation is all that you have,” Harvey states, noting that as you get older, “you revisit core beliefs on a regular basis. It’s easier to make decisions when you know your values.”

It was during that time Harvey’s life took another turn. He met Becky, his wife of 20 years. Listening to him talk about her, you

These days, Harvey is focusing more and more on living a faith-driven life. “Sometimes it takes getting older to see more clearly,” Harvey says. Here’s hoping that holds true for our community as well.

Before

description Born in 1982 as a two-bed, two-bath plus threebed, two-bath modular duplex (delivered by truck as four prebuilt modules) this property has been totally transformed into a contemporary 5,500 square foot dwelling by the design and build team at Trilogy Partners. When the owners first approached Trilogy Partners, their aspirations for this aging property were rather conservative. Maybe a fresh coat of paint and some new fixtures. After all, anything more than that would be extremely difficult, maybe impossible, given the property’s location on a steep bank high above the road. After meeting with the Trilogy team, a new plan began to take shape as Trilogy encouraged the owners to focus on wishes rather than obstacles. Once the concept was in place Trilogy engaged Matthew Stais Architects. As the architects worked on pulling the wish list into an architectural design

that made practical and esthetic sense, Trilogy Design paced them by creating a three dimensional virtual model so that the owners would be able to “experience” their home and make completely informed design decisions many months before construction began. The Trilogy process, and the model, created a seamless bridge between architectural and interior design so that form and function, both structural and esthetic, emerged together to become one. The owners could see it, experience it, explore it. Now, that once humble duplex had morphed into a 3,300 square foot primary residence with a two car garage, a wonderful open living plan with tremendous western views and exposures. The secondary unit became a smaller 2,200 square foot showpiece with equally enormous views, its own garage and entry. The owners were happy. They loved their new home. The obstacles had been overcome. The Trilogy-Stais design team process had left nothing to chance. Now it was time to build.

95 VICTORY LANE BUILDER APEX MOUNTAIN HOMES, INC

BRECKENRIDGE

DESCRIPTION High above the town of Breckenridge, situated in the old growth forest of Warriors Preserve, stands a home as majestic as the Bald Mountain Peak it overlooks. As Boreas Pass beckons, this home answers with an architectural feel right out of the glory days of the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad that frequented this area 75 years ago. Featuring massive log columns, native stone footings, weathered siding, and rusty metal roofing, this home blends into the surrounding mountainside as if it has been there since historic times. Awakened from its dormancy in 2013 by Apex Mountain Homes, the Victory Revival reveals its singular character the moment you step foot inside the front door. No longer in the days of old, this interior boasts the clean lines, sleek finishes, and modern technology of the 21st century. This home’s renewed life shouts “big city” in the middle of small town Colorado. This large luxury home effectively retains intimacy while allowing family and guests to spread out. The contemporary granite-wrapped kitchen island sits amidst custom cabinetry and the newest commercial-grade, stainless steel appliances, with eye-popping views of Baldy just over your shoulder. Custom wire-brushed wood floors connect the spacious great room with the action and life of the party in the kitchen, the fun of the rec room on the lower level, or the seclusion of the sitting area of the loft. Each master suite has its own fireplace and spa-like bathroom retreat, equipped with a steam shower and custom soaking tub. Well-insulated walls and high-efficiency windows are among the energy-efficient features that are in harmony with the Summit Sustainable Building Code. “Built tight and ventilated right” comes to

mind when experiencing the fresh mountain air brought in by the ventilation system, and nothing speaks toasty better than the warmth of efficient in-floor heat. Discover all that Summit County has to offer during the parade, and then come experience the superbly conceived elegance of this Apex Mountain Homes Revival on Victory Lane.

This home is a must-see masterpiece handcrafted by log artisans in British Columbia. Enjoy the signature large diameter Western Red Cedar Logs, Alaskan Flared Tails, Swedish Cope fit, arched doorways and open curved staircase, all done by hand. Though the home took a year to build, the logs were tagged and transported on four trucks then re-erected by our skilled crew in only one week! This custom floor plan was a collaboration of Mountain Log Homes of Colorado’s local team, the homeowner’s desires, and Pioneer Log Homes of B.C.’s drafting team. This 5-acre lot required fire mitigation of over 500 beetle kill trees. The site offers tranquility and privacy while still close to town and ski area. The covered outdoor living space gives the home a second great room with deep seated furniture, “carved-in” log picnic table and bench, and 16-foot stone wood burning fireplace. The nature-loving homeowners have lots of special touches—take the time to locate the carved bear in the ridge beam, red-tail hawk by Hollow Log Carving, and other artistic wildlife touches throughout. This Texas family designed the home for family gatherings with open kitchen, bunk room and lots of conversational areas. The Steinway piano is equipped with electronic player system…but it’s not all for show, the family does play! Although this custom home is not for sale, you can experience the special ambiance of log home living through weekly luxury rentals at riverridgerentals.com; search for Moose Ridge Cabin. Better yet, call us to design and build your one-of-a-kind dream home.

description Nestled in the trees at the base of Peak 8, this 6,600 square foot mining-inspired home was designed to look as if it has always been on the site, but with all of today’s modern day amenities. The exterior mining look of the home is achieved using a mix of rusted metal panels, distressed beams, skip-sawn siding, and dry-stacked stones. Carrying that feel through the interior is reclaimed Wyoming snow fence and copper panels with custom patinas throughout the residence. But don’t be fooled, this home is decked out in the latest technology can offer including a Savant controlled theater, automated Lutron Lighting, a custom oxygen enrichment system, and a three-story elevator. A ridge light in the great room allows a peek of our bluebird skies as well as a view of the rusted metal-clad ‘mine shaft’ which seamlessly continues into an impressive interior fireplace design. The sunny, south-facing deck has panoramic views of Baldy Mountain, the Breckenridge Ski Resort, and the gondola carrying skiers to and from the resort— although if you lived here, you would be skiing to the resort from the back door.

description Located a short walk from Frisco’s vibrant Main Street, this home is one of five units that make up Ridgeview Court, one of Frisco’s newest developments. Each home has a completely unique design, offering variety at every turn of the head, rather than the repetitive design found in many multifamily developments. Private rooftop decks that take advantage of the 360-degree views are one of the major features included with each home. A central courtyard gives the homeowners a comfortable outdoor space right outside their door, while also providing attractive scenery to view from inside their homes. Designer and developer Nathan Glassman followed the principals of Biophilic design to create a home that provides a seamless integration from indoors to out. Many natural materials were used to accomplish this goal, including large amounts of stone and woodwork throughout the home. The central feature of the home is a large stone wall that slips between the interior and exterior through a window measuring over fifteen feet tall. The stone wall is capped on the interior with one of the home’s three fireplaces, which extends roughly 26 feet above the living room floor, making it an anchor for the home from inside and out. Glassman Companies teamed up with Mike Hurley and Tim Scanlan of Raptor Construction who were able to bring their hands on approach to the project, ensuring each home was treated as though it was a custom residence even before any of the homes were sold. Once Unit D was under contract during construction, the homeowners were able to create a truly custom home by adding features like a large steam shower, a walk-in master shower, a bubble massage tub, a fireplace and wet

bar on the lower level, and even a fireplace on the rooftop deck. In addition to the large stone wall that forms the west wall of the living room, there are several other unique features found in this home. The north wall of the kitchen is covered in rough cut beetle kill timber and features a sliding barn door made custom by Raptor Construction of the same material. The door slides open to reveal the walk-in pantry while adding to the home’s rustic feel in a sustainably responsible way. Another unique feature of the home is the roughly 300 square foot roof top deck with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The deck is completed by a large fireplace that boasts Mount Royal as a backdrop. The home also incorporates a second floor deck that enjoys plenty of sunshine and a direct view of Mount Royal.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE BY PAUL BERTELLI, JLF & ASSOCIATES INTERIOR DESIGN BY PAUL BERTELLI AND CATHERINE LANE INTERIORS

You might expect the head of an architecture practice known for its restorations of classic ranch properties to live in a grand Western house surrounded by a vast natural landscape. So it may come as a surprise that Paul Bertelli, design principal of JLF & Associates, makes his home—shared with his fiancée and her daughter—in an 1,800-square-foot loft just a short walk from Bozeman’s historic downtown area, where his firm is based. But Bertelli’s home of the past four years not only hews closely to the philosophy that guides his business but also perfectly suits the lifestyle he prefers. “At JLF, we are regionalists,” he explains. “We respond to the immediate environment of a property, whether it’s in the Rocky Mountain West; Newport Beach, California; or Bucks County, Pennsylvania. I believe strongly in preserving the cultural and environmental identity of Bozeman, and the more we sprawl, the less we have. So living like this is a wise thing to do.” It’s also convenient, especially for a man who travels often for work and pleasure. “I really enjoy being able to leave the car in the garage underneath the building and just go at the drop of a hat,” he says. That’s not to say that Bertelli has forsaken the great West for the life of a city slicker. One look into his loft belies that FACING PAGE: Homeowner and architect Paul Bertelli designed the vanity for his master bathroom. Made from black steel pipe with a clear matte finish, it features a black Venetian granite countertop with unfinished edge and an undermounted sink with fixtures by Dornbracht. Complementing the retro-industrial look are a floor of Italian ceramic tile, wainscoting in white subway tiles from Montana Tile & Stone, and a pair of swing-arm, chrome-and-glass wall sconces by Rejuvenation. On the wall to the right of the vanity is a framed pencil drawing of a bucking bronco by artist Walter Piehl, Jr.

notion. In the kitchen/dining/living area, wide ceiling-high windows run perpendicular to two main interior walls that frame arched steel-and-glass window-doors. Their large expanses allow natural light to flow through most of the loft’s interiors while showcasing vistas of some of the area’s most dramatic mountainscapes: Hyalite Canyon, the Spanish Peaks and the Tobacco Roots. Bertelli set the great room’s sofa and dining table askew so people seated there could gaze out at the best vistas. “Why square the layout to the room?” he says. “One of the most compelling reasons to live here is the ability to look out at that mountain range.” When designing the loft’s interiors, Bertelli opted for “a really clean palette that shows a little restraint.” The walls and ceiling are predominantly painted white, as are the kitchen’s custom cabinets. Most of the floors and some of the interior doors, meanwhile, are made from rough reclaimed corral boards that evoke Montana’s ranching past. “The dominant elements are contemporary,” Bertelli explains, “while the contrasts come from the more traditional components.” Along with comfortable neutral-toned upholstered furnishings customized in consultation with local interior designer and friend Catherine Lane, that materials palette provides an ideal background for a highly personal range of beautiful and useful items Bertelli has collected over the years (see sidebar). In a compact footprint, it all adds up to a surprisingly spacious-feeling home that expresses the tastes of the man who designed it. “I’d never done a place for myself before this one,” Bertelli says. “I think too many architects build something for themselves too early in their careers, and they give in to the temptation to express everything they know. Not until later in your career can you show some restraint. You realize how little you really need, which coincides with a level of maturity about your work and about what’s important in your life.” ○

PARTICULAR FAVORITES “Living in a smaller space forces you to think about what’s important, and to be very particular about what you have,” Paul Bertelli says of his loft home in downtown Bozeman. With that in mind, the architect singles out a few items he’s learned he can’t live without: BOOKS A voracious reader, Bertelli fills the shelves in his study with favorite categories including biographies “of everyone from John Adams to Neil Young,” histories and travel books, “including a section of just maps and Fodor and Lonely Planet guidebooks.” POTS AND PANS Those from the professional-quality All-Clad brand are the avid home cook’s favorites. “The overall simplicity of their design, their functionality and their durability make them, day to day, the cool things to use in my kitchen.” ART “Most of the pieces have come from artist friends,” Bertelli says, “and I’ve also received a lot of art as gifts from clients.” He started collecting with plein-air landscapes, “but lately,” he says, “I’m beginning to move toward abstract works.” ANTIQUES Because he lives in a compact space, Bertelli has limited his antiques to a few excellent pieces. He’s drawn to antiques from Asia, “which are expressed in a simpler way that I really appreciate,” he says.

INTERIOR DESIGN BY SUSAN STELLA

FOR 30 YEARS, AESTHETIC CONSULTANT, INTERIOR STYLIST AND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER Susan Stella wanted a home in New Mexico. “I started coming here in the late ’70s and was completely affected by the color, the light, the native architecture,” she says. “I loved the colors of the earth here, the subtleties of the tones.” Stella got her wish when she found this 900-squarefoot adobe in Tesuque, just north of Santa Fe. It was hand-built in the 1970s by a couple who lives just down the road. It had good bones, as they say, but it needed restoration, both structural and aesthetic. No matter: Stella had fallen in love. Despite its shabbiness, the home had a few handsome features that inspired its new owner. The adobe walls “un-

dulate slightly, so beautifully,” she says. The window frames “are like art objects” with their simple, thick wood headers. And the willow doors to her daughter’s bedroom, and the matching kitchen cabinets and shutters, add texture and depth. From the start, Stella knew she would honor the area’s design vernacular and its natural beauty—the very things she loved from her first introduction to New Mexico—and add a few modern influences. She found inspiration in works by mid-20th-century artists, including Georgia O’Keeffe and Paul Strand, who lived and worked in New Mexico and contributed to its cultural history. “In New Mexico, you’ve got this powerful historical reference,” >>

The living room combines pieces in a range of styles and from several eras. The antique hutch, with its beautiful green patina, came from Recollections in Santa Fe. The midcentury Womb Chair is covered in Knoll mohair velvet. The chandelier shows off intricate Mexican tin work; Stella found it at Artesanos Mexican Imports in Santa Fe. The artwork throughout the home comes from Stella, her daughter and friends. FACING PAGE: One of Stella’s best design tricks is perhaps the simplest: In a small space, select a limited color palette and rely on textures and patterns to add depth and interest. Her neutral black-and-cream palette shows up in the master suite, desk accessories and even on the front-porch settee.

“SHOP LOCAL, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO ANTIQUES. YOUR LOCAL SHOPS WILL HAVE PIECES THAT REFERENCE YOUR REGION.” SUSAN STELLA

Stella says. “You have the Pueblo-style architecture that really reveres materials and you also have a cultural lineage from artists who integrated a beautiful midcentury aesthetic. My design approach grew from the combination of these influences.” Stella left the home’s simple layout as it was: long and rectangular, with a bedroom on each end and living space in the middle. Then she added a few elements to enhance the home’s connection to its place while making the space itself more unified. With help from contractors at PK Works, she added 3-inch-thick sills of ponderosa pine to all the windows. “They feel very Old World New Mexico,” she says. For the kitchen, she designed an adobe island topped with four-inch-thick planks of warped ponderosa pine. She painted all the home’s walls with a soft white clay paint except the wall behind each bed, which she covered in American Clay’s earth plaster in warm >>

rose and adobe brown hues. “I was going for that tactile, solid feel in materials,” she says. “Simple, minimal, but real.” Designing a home is a lot like creating art, Stella says. “You work with color and composition, and then you tend to the details and textural elements.” And the details here are exquisite: worn antiques, feel-good fabrics, midcentury furnishings, and contemporary artwork created by Stella, her friends and her daughter. The living room blends a Saarinen Womb Chair covered in olive green mohair velvet from Knoll with a tulip table, an ethereal Isamu Noguchi paper lamp, and a weathered green hutch Stella found at Recollections in Santa Fe. A light fixture that displays gorgeous Mexican tinwork crowns the room. The effect is at once soothing and mesmerizing. The master bedroom gets similar treatment: Stella used a creamand-black Donghia fabric (found on eBay) to cover her headboard and Moroccan ottoman, and to create the curtains that separate her bedroom from the living space. Two 19th-century antique Guatemalan tables flank the bed, and across the room stands a late-19th-century New Mexican wood desk, found at local art gallery Shiprock Santa Fe. Artwork fills the in-between spaces. The home pays tribute to the unique New Mexican beauty Stella loved for decades before living here. “When you find a land and a space that speaks to you, it’s almost like a calling; it’s hard to ignore,” she says. “I feel like this home is alive again.” ○

The small living space feels bright, courtesy of white walls and natural light. The brick floors are original to the home, and Stella added the weighty ponderosa pine windowsill on the far left. FACING PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: In the master bedroom, a cloud-like Isamu Noguchi paper lamp tops an antique Guatemalan bedside table; under the table is a clay vessel by artist Lisa Jensen-Nye. Stella covered the walls behind each bed in a warm, earthtoned clay plaster and dressed each bed with Rough Linen bedding by Tricia Rose. For an easy—and colorful— bedside table accent, Stella displayed a few favorite necklaces in a small handwoven basket.

Reclaimed, hand-chiseled spruce beams from Austria mix with modern, comfortable furnishings in the living area, where bright accents of color warm a palette of cool neutrals. The orange and yellow draperies were custom made in Switzerland, and the fabric is just sheer enough to allow sunlight to flood the room while providing privacy when needed. The white sofa is Flexform, and the rug is natural sheepskin.

MOUNTAIN MODULAR A CONTEMPORARY VAIL HOME BLENDS HIGH-TECH, PREFABRICATED BUILDING ELEMENTS WITH SPACES DESIGNED FOR OLD-FASHIONED FAMILY TOGETHERNESS

IN THE SKI RESORT TOWN OF VAIL, where mountainside mansions are as common as city slickers on the bunny slopes, the vision that Balz Arrigoni and his wife Christina had for their new home was charmingly down to earth. “We told our architect [Doug DeChant of Douglas Miller DeChant Architects/ Shepherd Resources] that we wanted a true family home where we could all be together,” he says. As the owners of Vail-based luxury flooring company Arrigoni Woods, the Arrigonis had worked with DeChant professionally and long admired his work. This project presented the architect with a challenge: The building site is backed by national forest land, and its narrow profile restricted the width of the house to just 17 feet. But DeChant was undeterred. “When we focus on potential rather than limitations, we find that unexpected solutions emerge,” he says of the spacious three-story design he developed for the family. “My wife and I felt it was important to have our children’s rooms on the same level as ours,” Balz explains, “and we specifically requested smaller bedrooms and a shared bathroom for them because we didn’t want our kids off living independently behind closed doors. We also asked for open living spaces, many windows and huge sliding doors to bring in as much natural light as possible.” >>

ARCHITECTURE BY DOUGLAS MILLER DECHANT ARCHITECTS/SHEPHERD RESOURCES CUSTOM BUILDING SYSTEM BY CONCEPT 4012

While the site was excavated and the foundation was poured, the majority of the home was pre-built in Switzerland through the Arrigonis’ recently launched company, Concept 4012. Unlike earlier “prefab” homes, Concept 4012’s sophisticated building modules are meticulously engineered using the latest energy-saving technologies. The super-insulated walls have an advanced R-value of 46 and are fitted with pre-installed highly efficient windows. After traveling by boat to Houston and via train to Denver, three enormous shipping containers arrived by truck in Vail. Much like an Amish barn raising, a professional team of builders erected the 3,800-square-foot home in just seven days. “You cut out four or five months of construction time” compared to traditional “stick-built” homes, Balz says of the system. Because so many of the elements were prefabricated, the house was move-in ready just four months after the containers arrived. In a nod to Balz’s Swiss heritage, the home’s chalet-style design features overhanging eaves that keep the interiors cool in the summer and a sharply angled roof that sheds snow in the winter. The reclaimed exterior siding, imported from Austria, was left in its natural state and never has to be treated; the roof shingles are made from recycled tires. >> 132

In the open dining area, large sliding-glass doors let in sunlight and expand the living space to the outdoors. Chrome Magnum Stricktex chairs surround a simple walnut table, all by Austrian manufacturer Team 7. The overhead light fixture is from WAC Lighting, and floors are old-growth hand-scraped Bavarian oak. FACING PAGE: The home was pre-built in Europe by the Arrigonis’ company, Concept 4012. Super-insulated walls and overhanging eaves keep the home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and the reclaimed wood siding is naturally maintenance-free.

In dramatic contrast to the home’s traditional exterior, the Arrigonis created a contemporary interior with modern furnishings and a palette of soft neutrals accented with bright colors. The sleek kitchen, which Balz calls “the centerpiece of the house,” is fitted with handsome gray cabinetry by Bulthaup. A central hearth provides heat and a natural gathering place that unites the open living and dining areas. Bedroom walls are covered in reclaimed wood, and old beams from Salzburg show the hand-chiseled notches that were used in homebuilding more than a century ago. Not surprisingly, Balz chose some of his favorite woods for the home’s floors. The main level features wide hand-hewn planks of old-growth Bavarian oak, which he says is a good, functional choice for a family. “The natural gray tones are neutral, like the Swiss,” he jokes. The top and bottom-level floors are Siberian larch, a soft wood enhanced with a white oil finish. The home is temperate and comfortable in both summer and winter, with energy bills averaging just $120 a month throughout the year. Best of all, the house supports the couple’s original vision of family togetherness: “We live on all the levels and use every space in this home,” Balz says. ○

A playful swing hangs from the ceiling in the sitting corner, where a pair of red Ligne Roset Togo lounge chairs invite relaxation. The wraparound hearth is covered in a dark gray, matte-finish porcelain tile, with a built-in seating ledge perfect for warming up by the fire. The vintage ski poster from St. Moritz is a colorful reminder of Balz Arrigoni’s ski racing days.

Miele appliances and contemporary cabinetry from German manufacturer Bulthaup create an uncluttered, unified front in the functional, sleek kitchen, where the Arrigonis enjoy baking homemade bread in the wall-mounted ovens. A flat glass cooktop is set in a large center island that provides additional storage, and an offset slab of elm wood provides a transitional ledge for serving. Restaurant-style countertops are fabricated in polished stainless steel, and the yellow glass pendant lights illuminating the island are from Tech Lighting.

After an invigorating steam shower or a relaxing bath in the soaking tub, the homeowners can dry off with warm towels from the heated towel rack. OF BUCKAROOS AND BRANCHES THE ARTIST: Lisa Kokin BEST KNOWN FOR: Making art from books in a process she refers to as “sewing and alterations.” INSPIRATION: This work is part of a series, “How the West Was Sewn,” which came to life when the artist rescued a pile of old pulp cowboy novels from the recycling center. Kokin says “they begged to be rearranged and recontextualized.” A NEW READING: Kokin tames the rip-roaring violence and lawlessness of the novels by means of the traditional “women’s work” of sewing. The colorful spines and daring and dastardly pages take on the gently organic and lifeaffirming natural forms of leaves, branches and tendrils. Lisa Kokin’s work is on view at the Boise Art Museum, October 5, 2013 - April 27, 2014. ○
