SLHL HELLO

Snow

LET IT

I LOVE SNOWSTORMS. When I was little there was nothing more exciting than lying in bed with my eyes shut tight, listening to the radio and desperately hoping that my school was on the hallowed “Closed” list. The joy that came upon knowing that I could go sledding, build a snowman, drink hot chocolate or just watch TV all day was beyond measure. I still feel that same excitement when the snow starts to fall. Maybe it’s the sense of the unknown. Will this be a light dusting or a full-fledged two-footer? I have to admit, as an adult, waking up to a driveway blanketed in the white stuff is not always as exciting as when I was 10. Even if my kids are lucky enough to get a free day, I still have to get out, go to work, maybe even stop at the grocery store. But you know what? I really do still secretly love snowstorms. They are a wonderful excuse to get all snuggly inside, make a fire and just relax . In this issue of SLHL, we celebrate the heart of the home, the kitchen. Check out our amazing 2011 Kitchens of the Year award winners on page 26 and be inspired to make the heart of your home as beautiful and functional as it can be. Trends and Fab Finds (pages 10 and 12) offer plenty of “cuddle up” comfort. Cozy, textured pillows, rugs and throws, as well as the warmth and beauty of glowing lamplight, will help to make your home the place to be for a welcoming winter warm-up. Speaking of warm, both of our featured homes, one a New York-style suburban condo (page 42) and the other an eclectic and artistic historic city home (page 34), exude the warmth and style of their owners and offer some unexpected and beautiful surprises. If you have a sweet tooth, turn to page 22 – fast! Bailey’s Chocolate Bar will have you swooning over the delectable delights they prepared for a scrumptious Valentine’s Day “Girls’ Night In.” I hope it’s snowing when you read this issue, but even if there’s not a snowflake in sight, we at SLHL hope that you can experience that “school’s closed” feeling as you snuggle up in front of the fire, sip a cup of tea and enjoy a few moments of winter warmth.

THIS WINTER, LET TABLE AND ACCENT LAMPS FLOOD YOUR SPACES WITH WARMTH AND LIGHT BY KATIE UNDERHILL

2

T

ried and true, the table lamp is a classic piece in the puzzle of interior design. With proper placement, table or accent lamps can alter the feeling and scale of a room. And when paired with additional sources of light, such as an overhead chandelier, these lamps create a layered lighting effect, casting a softer glow that establishes mood and ambience. They are also ideal for everyday tasks, so whether you’re curled up with a novel in your favorite overstuffed chair or chatting with friends by the fire, table lamps emit light that is both functional and cozy. A lamp can also be a savvy way to make a statement or add visual interest to a setting. Placing a contemporary table or accent lamp in a more traditional room often adds a fresh, and sometimes dramatic, sense of style to the space.

SLHL DOUBLE TAKE

{One} Fabulous Foyer TWO SMASHING WAYS TO MAKE A STUNNING FIRST IMPRESSION

BY JUDY UELK PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE MATHEIS

Your home’s entryway should sparkle with personality. It should give your guests an inkling of what to expect as they are invited into your personal spaces. Foyers should be fabulous. They should make a stunning first impression. Does yours? Interior designer Hilary Beyer, ASID, of Frank Patton Interiors gives her take on two totally different design styles and shows how each design can work beautifully in the same space. In this particular foyer, a transitional console with a basalt finish and a gold rice top by Bill Sofield for Baker, as well as an eight-sided center table with a sable finish and a Macassar ebony veneer top by Alexa Hampton for Hickory Chair serve as starting points for two diverse looks. “Dark woods are very popular these days,” notes Hilary, “and can easily transition between styles.” 16

™

SLHL DOUBLE TAKE

“A TRADITIONALLYMINDED HOMEOWNER wants a classic look,” says Hilary. “Traditional décor can be dressed up for a more formal feel or scaled down for simple sophistication,” she adds. Using a palette of rich colors, accented with shades of gold metallic, Hilary set the stage for classic elegance. Two square benches, with gold bamboo bases and upholstered in a patterned silk, slip easily beneath the console, providing visual interest and functionality. Creamy off-white crackled lamps with gold-toned bases and finials beautifully frame the gilded Chinese Chippendale-style mirror with a pagoda crest. Accessories for this look are minimal but substantial. “I quite often go light on accessories,” says Hilary, “especially in a contemporary setting. If the furnishings are beautiful, they don’t require much ornamentation.” For her traditional take, the console is adorned with a clear glass rectangular vase, abundant with small white rose buds, alongside a dark classic Caesar statuette. The center table welcomes guests the moment they walk through the front door with a glorious floral arrangement in shades of pink, accented by an edgier zebra-striped box that complements the dark and light tones of the console area. Together with an Oriental rug and magnificent floral oil painting, this traditional ensemble provides a stately yet welcoming feel.

FOR A MORE CONTEMPORARY SPIN ON THE SAME SPACE, Hilary replaces the creamy lamps with faceted glass-columned ones, accented with brass bases and topped with gold linen shades. Three glittering glasses and a decanter perched on a mirrored leather serving tray offer a simple focal point, and a large print entitled “Celebratory Whim” swaps places with the mirror. A collection of aquamarine ceramic vases, skillfully arranged beneath the console, picks up the blues in the artwork above and infuses the more neutral entryway with another pop of color. Hilary transforms the transitional center table by replacing the pink roses with white orchids, accompanied by an exquisite piece of blown glass. Three triangular benches on casters by T.O.B. (Thomas O’Brien) for Hickory Chair and upholstered in a subtle animal print punch up this grouping .You’ll also note that the rug is gone, and two bold black-and-white prints by Larry Laslo give the back wall a new look. “It’s all about buying pieces you love,” advises Hilary, “and then choosing the direction in design that appeals most to you to complement these pieces.”

Q +A

SLHL: This is a stunning kitchen! Where do you begin when creating a project like this?

SM: Initially, the most important thing is spending time with my clients and finding out exactly what they like about their spaces. Most people have visited showrooms and collected magazine after magazine, which I love. I always spend a couple hours with them on the first visit to find out what direction they might already have in mind.

save people money and still provide them with the kitchen of their dreams. I work with some of the best contractors in St. Louis, so the quality is always top-notch. I don’t have a showroom, which benefits the client more than I think they realize, and allows me to keep costs down.

SM: The granite countertops are “brushed,” so they have a leather finish as opposed to a polished finish. They still have a nice glossy appeal, but at the same time, you don’t see all of the fingerprints. This definitely complements the shininess of the backsplash and the sleek stainless steel appliances.

SLHL: What are some of your favorite design details in this kitchen?

SLHL: What about a client who lives in, say, a loft in the city as opposed to a larger, more traditional home? Are you comfortable designing cabinetry in a variety of design styles?

SLHL: What would you say most sets you apart in this market?

SM: The cabinets are maple with a full-cover paint and gray glaze, while the island is accented in a maple dark chocolate stain. Using two colors makes the kitchen feel warm and inviting. By using different elevations, we provided visual interest without ornate onlays – the clients wanted to keep it simple.

SM: Most people are redesigning a kitchen once in their lifetime. My goal is to whittle away some of the larger costs, so I’m able to

SLHL: These countertops are especially unique. What kind of finish was used?

SM: I design traditional through contemporary, and I have the cabinetry manufacturers to accommodate. The cabinets in this kitchen are Kemp Cabinets from an Amish community in Indiana. With Kemp, you get fully custom, handcrafted cabinetry for a reasonable price. Isn’t that what every consumer is looking for?

Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice An elegant Valentine’s Day “Girls’ Night In” celebrates special friendships BY JUDY UELK

intage silver platters laden with decadent chocolate delights and savory cheeses are scattered about Barb Combs’ traditionally elegant living room. Glittering candlelight bounces off the sparkly votives illuminating the festive red-striped glasses filled to the brim with specialty martinis. And roses, roses and more roses, their sherbet hues of raspberry, yellow and pink perfectly accenting the décor, leave no doubt that this is a girlie gathering. “I thought that having a ‘girls’ night in’ party around Valentine’s Day was a great way to express to my friends how much their friendships mean to me,” says Barb. So, with visions of the perfect celebration, Barb called upon David Bailey, owner of Bailey’s Chocolate Bar in Lafayette Square, to create a memorable and delectable chocolate and cheese extravaganza. “For this party,” explains Barb, “I wanted to do something casual, yet fun and pampering. It was important to me that everything was prepared in advance, so that I could actually enjoy the time with my friends, sitting by the fire and talking.” With that as her directive, Chocolate Bar Executive Chef Robin Murphy knew just what to do. “My goal was to create an appetizing array of desserts coupled with a savory sampling of artisanal cheeses and spicy nuts,” says Chef Robin. “We created petite, yet ornate, bite-sized portions with a wide variety of flavors, running the gamut from sweet to savory. Chocolate and cheese are ideal complements. And, of course, we included a mouthwatering menu of chocolate martinis! This was to be a ladylike presentation, yet one that packed a tasty punch.” Barb enjoys planning parties, and she and her husband, Art, often entertain

friends at their classic Central West End home. “Our home is 98 years old,“ explains Barb, “and is fabulous for entertaining. I love to use silver serving pieces, crystal and lots of candles for my parties. They create such an elegant atmosphere. That’s definitely the look I was going after for my ‘girls’ night in.’” Flowers are also important to Barb. “I think flowers add a welcoming touch to any occasion,” she says. “Sometimes I even place fresh flowers right on the serving trays when I’m entertaining.” Scott Hepper, master floral designer for Carriage House Florals at Diane Breckenridge Interiors, created gorgeous botanical confections in a rainbow of traditionally feminine pink, raspberry and yellow. Varying heights and bouquet sizes added to the striking visual interest. Needless to say, Barb’s friends knew they were special the moment they walked in the door. “Barb really knows how to make you feel important,” says party guest and longtime pal Amy Willcut. “This was such a wonderful evening. Everything Barb did was so thoughtful, from the chic printed invitations (no Evites for this girl!) to the delicious desserts and the beautiful flowers. She even gave each of us an adorable sweet take-home gift.” Neighbor Ann Greenspan couldn’t agree more. “What’s more fun than getting a bunch of girls together to laugh, share memories and create new ones that we’ll treasure forever? Of course, the chocolate martinis didn’t hurt either!” See page 56 for design resources.

KITCHENS of the

A Six award-winning kitchens sizzle with superior style and smart design BY KATIE UNDERHILL

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

LOG CABIN CHIC PLATINUM WINNER

brooksBerry Kitchens & Baths MORE THAN 400 SQUARE FEET

Nestled in an 1820s salvaged dog-trot log cabin overlooking a picturesque river valley, this kitchen was part of a large-scale redesign. By developing a “Y” design plan, brooksBerry Kitchens & Baths minimized the extensive addition’s impact on the original cabin. Rustic yet modern, upscale aesthetics, such as “Branches in the Wind” custom leaded glass doors, mahogany cabinetry with Mesquite cabinet center panel accents and Typhoon Green honed granite countertops, enhance the décor. Natural limestone in the flagstone flooring and partition walls, as well as fumed wide plank pine flooring, enrich the log cabin feel. Backing the range area with a stone partition wall allowed for a vented French stove that is not visible from the dining room. And because ample storage was required for remote country living, a walk-in pantry and second refrigerator and freezer were added, in addition to double-sided, extra-deep peninsula cabinets with dish drawers underneath and a beverage center wall of shelves and cabinets. Unlike the rest of the cabin’s dark, enveloping rooms, the kitchen is spacious and full of natural light, with spectacular views that invite indoor-outdoor entertaining.

Judges’ Comments: Incorporating modern touches into the design provides contrast between the rough and polished elements. The muted color scheme has a natural feel and really brings the outdoors in. The round island adds visual interest to the space, and the exposed stone and cabin wall is a great touch. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISE O’BRIEN

POOL HOUSE PERFECTION PLATINUM WINNER

Glen Alspaugh Kitchens & Baths 250-400 SQUARE FEET

Dreaming of a truly creative concept for their pool house kitchen, the homeowners requested a space that exuded a warm, tropical, Mediterranean feel. It also needed to be casual, fun and full-service, with high-capacity appliances suitable for entertaining. Glen Alspaugh Kitchens & Baths incorporated upscale elements into the design, including signature custom frameless cabinetry, CaesarStone Pacific Reflections and Blue Boquira granite countertops. Imperial Tempora Travertine floors and top-of-the-line appliances infuse a sense of elegance into the setting. Yet, to prevent the high ceiling and doors from appearing overly formal, cabinet heights vary in elevation, which lends a more casual air to the space. One-of-a-kind touches enhance the kitchen’s unique appeal, such as the custom distressed, multicolored finish on the cabinets, which was painted on-site by a local artisan. The result is a beautiful blend that conveys relaxed sophistication.

Judges’ Comments: The tropical, Mediterranean feel of this kitchen is refreshing and totally original. Everything ties in very well, and the tile really sets the mood. It feels like you are on vacation! The functionality is great, especially how the kitchen opens up to a seating area. The arched window is an interesting design element. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISE O’BRIEN

MID-CENTURY MARVEL PLATINUM WINNER

A young couple on a limited budget envisioned a stylish and functional kitchen for their 1960s split-level home. The existing kitchen had low ceilings, a cramped layout with insufficient storage and no casual eating area, as well as dated décor from a 1980s remodel. To solve these design dilemmas, brooksBerry Kitchens & Baths removed unnecessary soffits and eliminated wall cabinets to make the room feel taller. Installing custom cabinetry and professional-style appliances gave the kitchen an upscale look, while a restored vintage dining table and inherited mid-century chairs serve as unique and affordable additions. Existing sliding patio doors were converted into a window, and with the addition of a full-lite door, the dining room table shifted to expand the kitchen. A hall closet was converted into a food pantry with drawers for spices and more, while a tall cabinet provides storage for dishes, utensils, pots and pans. Removing a wing wall and drywall pantry opened up the kitchen to dining and living areas. New recessed lighting provides better task and ambient lighting for the kitchen and casual dining area. Some of the kitchen’s most unique features include a prep island countertop, hidden Plugmold® in the stainless steel backsplash, and stainless steel feet on the range and adjacent base cabinetry.

Judges’ Comments: The design is clean, simple and fresh. The mixture of colors makes the kitchen feel warm and inviting. The space is smaller, yet functional, without an overpowering amount of cabinetry. Adding a door rather than more cabinets is also a nice touch. The kitchen has a good work triangle and an interesting variety of heights. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISE O’BRIEN

LAKEFRONT LUXURY GOLD WINNER

Gegg Design & Cabinetry MORE THAN 400 SQUARE FEET

Grandly scaled and brimming with elegance, this new-construction kitchen is full of fabulous features at every twist and turn. With subtle undertones of gothic styling and exceptional space planning, Gegg Design & Cabinetry overcame several design challenges, including a large appliance requirement with limited wall space, an unusual room shape and no direct natural light. Wall cabinets feature detailed gothic crown accents, as does the grand cabinet that contains a 36-inch refrigerator and a 27-inch freezer, yet gives the illusion of two symmetrical 27-inch units. The base cabinets also feature distinctive details, such as carved pilasters. A black preparation island has custom wood chopping blocks on each end, while the white-painted, glazed outer island is used for cleanup, with two dishwashers, a custom copper apron sink and carved gothic cabinet panels. The breathtaking butler’s pantry houses a turbo oven, fireclay sink and a dishwasher, as well as a supplemental 27-inch refrigerator/freezer concealed in a wainscot-paneled wall. A large arched-canopy beverage center, flanked by wall ovens, a warming drawer and convection microwave, features a triple-arched wall cabinet, copper sink, refrigerated drawers and more.

Judges’ Comments: Despite an incredibly unique design, this kitchen looks highly functional. Architectural details, such as the ornate ceiling, make the kitchen stand out. It has all the appliances one would ever need, and they’re all within reach. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF GEGG DESIGN & CABINETRY

TWIST ON TRADITIONAL GOLD WINNER

Gegg Design & Cabinetry 250-400 SQUARE FEET

The goal of this extensive renovation and addition was to transform an isolated, cramped kitchen into a much larger, open space while maintaining the home’s authenticity and character. To accomplish these objectives, Gegg Design & Cabinetry devised an aesthetically pleasing, practical floor plan. A calming color palette of creamy off-white and light blue hues blends beautifully with the stainless steel appliances and classic hardwood floors. Now, the new kitchen can accommodate multiple cooks and is adjacent to the home’s eating and living areas, including a cozy hearth room. In addition, thoughtful details, such as beaded inset cabinetry and 1-inch-thick maple doors, were designed in keeping with the home’s historical nature. The existing kitchen was converted into a butler’s pantry and a mudroom, which acts as a centralized hub for the family to store coats, shoes and electronics, as well as extra food pantry items. The traditional butler’s pantry is a more formal space, which doubles as a serving area and display space for a large collection of dishes and glassware. Also concealed in the small space is a warming drawer, dishwasher and icemaker to make entertaining and life-on-the-go for today’s busy family run smoothly.

Judges’ Comments: This is a clean and cheerful take on the classic white kitchen. Soft, muted colors add to the light-and-airy feel, and subtle design details enhance the character and traditional style. The center island is a nice focal point and provides interesting contrast with the rest of the kitchen. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF GEGG DESIGN & CABINETRY

LIGHT & BRIGHT GOLD WINNER

Gegg Design & Cabinetry LESS THAN 250 SQUARE FEET

Prior to this remarkable renovation, the existing kitchen – which was inefficient and isolated from the rest of the home in a dark, enclosed space – was in desperate need of a makeover. Described as a “1950s remodel mish-mash,” this problem space was the product of a previous remodeling project. Clean, simple lines and special finishing touches – such as beaded inset cabinets, 1-inch-thick hard maple doors, paint and glaze finishes and a mixture of marble and granite countertops – tie the space together and enhance its beauty. By removing a wall between the kitchen and breakfast area, as well as eliminating the doorway to the breakfast room, Gegg Design & Cabinetry transformed the space into an open and inviting heart of the home. Soft, muted tones now unify the kitchen and breakfast room spaces. A structural beam between the kitchen and breakfast area was concealed, and by modifying a closet, the refrigerator was relocated to a more convenient spot. Adding a peninsula introduced visual separation without disrupting the flow of the room. The end result, a major transformation without the addition of new space, is a classically designed kitchen that is sophisticated without being overly ornate.

Judges’ Comments: This kitchen is bright, cheery and definitely one-of-a-kind. The play of finishes and textures, such as the black and white countertops, is interesting. It’s a great example of a transitional kitchen. There are definite distinctions between spaces, yet it flows well. Great space planning makes the kitchen look bigger than it actually is. The light fixture over the center island is exceptional; the pendants add an extra layer of sophistication. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF GEGG DESIGN & CABINETRY

The

grand exterior of the commanding turn-of-thecentury Georgian Federal Revival residence that creative professionals Nila and Alex Paradowski call home belies the eclectic interior, which successfully marries historic significance with a contemporary frame of mind. Gathering history and giving it a place in their lives today has been one of the Paradowskis’ great joys. “If we find something at a flea

market or estate sale that we like, we’ll buy it and figure out later how we’ll use it,” they say. Owners of Paradowski Creative, a creative agency located downtown, Nila and Alex are all about making their home a work of art that joyfully reflects their personalities and celebrates their histories. Juxtaposed against an interior canvas that exudes a more modern mentality, the Paradowskis’ timeless treasures are showcased to perfection.

Collectors by nature, Nila and Alex have filled their personal spaces with significant and unexpected objets d’art, such as an old shoeshine chair in the kitchen, a bowling alley bench in the living room, and vintage juggling pins in the breakfast room. Keeping in touch with their personal past is also important to the couple. They enjoy displaying family photos and showcasing heirlooms, such as the rocking chair that Nila’s grandfather would sit in to lull her father to sleep. “We love to have things around us that have a story,” explains Nila, who actually wrote a letter to the original owner of their Victrola when the owner couldn’t keep it in the nursing home she was entering. Nila wanted to assure her that the special piece would be well taken care of. Yet, with this classic disposition, the Paradowskis have deftly fused

a contemporary vocabulary that offers a graphic punch of contrasting lines and blocks of color. “We’ve lived in this home for more than 20 years,” says Alex, “and have been slowly renovating it, always keeping in mind and respecting its architectural integrity. However, we are purists when it comes to design, and if something doesn’t have a

glass-topped island and a dazzling black-and-white striped maple floor set on the diagonal are truly a feast for the eyes. “Kitchens built in the early 1900s were very utilitarian,” notes Alex. “They were simply functional workshops for the cook. Nila and I wanted to add style to the substance.” One rich cherry-red wall adds a pop of vibrant color, and Alex’s own architectural design in the breakfast room gives the space even more personality. “We wanted to build in features when it made sense and not just hang things on walls, so we had our architect create a grid of rusted steel boxes that serve as art niches,” says Alex. Four of them are also windows, so daylight illuminates the glass items inside. From contemporary to eclectic, traditional to transitional, the Paradowskis have fashioned a home that is the best of all worlds, providing them with a warm and welcoming space that is as creatively invigorating as it is sublimely tranquil. Just the right spot for this clever couple who see things from a decidedly artistic point of view.

icture an ultra-chic condo nestled in a posh Manhattan neighborhood. Impressive pieces from an extensive art collection line the walls, while “high-fashion” furnishings and fabrics dress the stylish space to the nines. Contemporary mixes with traditional to create an ambience of eclectic elegance, a brilliant blend that draws you in and ensures that no fine feature goes unnoticed. Yes, you might be dreaming of a picture-perfect property on the Upper East Side. Or you could be envisioning Elaine Hauck’s delightful suburban condo – right here in St. Louis. “New York has a lot of tight spaces, and this home is similar in that it uses every inch of space,” says interior designer Cindy Hermann of Diane Breckenridge Interiors. A fusion of comfortable charm and urban-inspired élan, Elaine’s home beckons guests to sit down – albeit on style-savvy, animal-print chenille – and stay awhile. Cozy, casual décor makes the space family-friendly and ideal for relaxation. At the same time, upscale and unexpected design details, such as framed Hermes scarves from a memorable trip to Paris and an antique harp, offer eye-catching “ooh la la.” In the family room, a colorful, contemporary painting with clean lines hangs next to the ornately carved mantel with egg-and-dart detailing for striking contrast. Similarly, a fuzzy mocha-colored rug provides visual interest underfoot, particularly when coupled with two smooth off-white and brass-studded leather ottomans.

Bejeweled with tiny glass beads that sparkle in the light, the entryway’s shimmering wallcovering sets the tone for the home’s decidedly dazzling disposition. “This adds so much texture and life,” says Cindy of the silvery-gold metallic paper. “Texture is key to making a warm, neutral palette work.” Leopard-print carpet runs up the stairs to welcome guests in style. This page: A predominantly black color palette lends a sleekness to the kitchen and breakfast room. A bright and cheerful piece of art adds larger-than-life personality.

it’s about the story behind each piece.” —Elaine, homeowner

Below, left: An ornate Venetian mirror sets the tone for this dazzling “gem” of a master bath. Sparkling accents, such as spectacular chandeliers, multifaceted knobs and crystal and chrome faucets, add to the bath’s brilliance. The bustled chevron-gold taffeta window treatment, as well as the intricate pattern in the wallcovering and the custom cabinetry’s twisted ribbon door style, tie the room together. Below, right: Full of energy and “uptown” flair, the hallway powder room is a shining example of contemporary design. A mirrored cabinet was transformed into a vanity, adding a reflective, multidimensional quality to the space. See Design Resources on page 56.

Keli Nelson lead interior designer SLHL would like to dedicate this feature in Keli Nelson’s memory. As with many designers, her working relationship with the homeowner grew into a beautiful friendship. She will be missed.

The same creamy tone is repeated in the glazed wood moldings and built-ins flanking the fireplace and stands out against dark chocolate walls. Tone-on-tone cornices in a deep gray-blue carry the eye into the fresh yet formal dining room. Velvet and silk damask end chairs in a delicate blue establish a romantic ambience and punctuate the room’s rich brown hues. Suspended by cables and hung low over the exquisite dining room table, an artistic frosted glass chandelier, with its “floating” illusion, evokes a sense of softness despite its inherently modern characteristics. Thoughtful, feminine touches, such as mirrored nightstands, chrome and crystal lamps and glitter-infused paint, heighten the glitzy glamour of the beautiful master bedroom. A scrolling black design resembling loose ribbon adorns the perimeter of the chenille-upholstered headboard, the tufts of which are embellished with crystals. According to Cindy, “It’s a woman’s room, so it’s all about elegance and bling!” Warm, welcoming and oh-so-chic, Elaine’s condo is an extension of her own personality and style. “This home defines her,” says Cindy. “It’s a more modern transitional design with comfortable, inviting spaces.” And when she’s not enjoying the haven she calls home, Elaine spends her days “saving the planet one scoop at a time” at Dottie’s Ice Cream, a sustainable ice cream parlor she founded in 2009.

SLHL IN THE GARDEN

“Impatiens, marigolds, coleus and cosmos, as well as basil and tomatoes, are among the easier plants to grow.” DEBBIE O’NEILL, SUMMER WINDS® NURSERY

Great Expectations SEED GARDENS ARE GARDENS FULL OF PROMISE

BY JUDY UELK

Baby, it’s cold outside! If the winter doldrums are getting you down, maybe now’s the time to curl up with a fuzzy blanket in front of a roaring fire and start dreaming of summer. In fact, January is the perfect time to start planning the garden that will make you smile come June. Seed catalogs are chock full of ideas for adding color, texture and surprise to your landscaping and can be really fun to explore as the temperatures dip outside. You’ll be amazed at all of the choices available, and no doubt you’ll see a few intriguing plants you’d like to give a try. Although it certainly takes time and effort to nurture seeds to maturation, the process can be rewarding and offers you the opportunity to cultivate a garden uniquely your own. Debbie O’Neill of Summer Winds® Nursery in Ellisville is a seed specialist and a go-to guru when it comes to “growing your own,” literally from the ground up. “January is definitely the right time to start poring over the catalogs,” she advises. “Some seeds can be planted in containers indoors and then transported outside after the ground thaws.” She recommends, however, that you take your time and really plan what you want out of your garden, be it flowers or veggies or a little bit of both. “There are so many varieties to choose from,” she notes, “but for the beginning seed gardener, several kinds stand out as user-friendly. Impatiens, marigolds, coleus and cosmos, as well as basil and tomatoes, are among the easier plants to grow. Peppers are always popular, but are actually tricky,” adds Debbie. “Their seeds need lots of heat to prosper.” Some of the catalogs Debbie recommends are Botanical Interests, Burpee and Renee’s Garden Seeds. You can access these catalogs online, but it’s extra nice to request an actual copy to have on hand for those bone-chilling evenings when the fire is crackling and a cup of tea beckons. See page 56 for resources.

48

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Debbie’s Tips for

Successful Seed Gardening = Always use a “seed starting” potting mix to help prevent fungal infections. = Seedlings need sunlight to germinate. Make sure yours are getting at least 14 to 16 hours a day. = Watering is important! As seeds grow, they need more hydration. = As your plants begin to grow, pinch them back to encourage fullness. = Acclimate seedlings to direct sunlight and fluctuating weather conditions by increasing their time outside by a few hours each day as the weather gets warmer. This will help to ensure that your seeds will thrive once you have transplanted them outdoors.

Into the Limelight A CONTEMPORARY MAKEOVER BRINGS AN OUTDATED AND CRAMPED KITCHEN FRONT AND CENTER

EDITED BY JUDY UELK PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAY REEVES, TAO + LEE ASSOCIATES, INC.

CHALLENGE: To create a dynamic, user-friendly kitchen within the original footprint that unifies the family’s living space and allows for easy entertaining. SOLUTION: Architect Helen Lee and lead designer Jay Reeves of TAO + LEE Associates took a modest C-shaped kitchen that was dated aesthetically and not ideal for their clients’ family’s modern lifestyle and made it into a contemporary and functional workspace. Although no walls were removed in this impressive kitchen renovation, the illusion is a much larger space with plenty of room for cooking and gathering. “Our biggest challenge,” says Helen, “was to make an interesting looking kitchen in the space that we had. Originally, the kitchen seemed to blend into the family room and breakfast room with no clear definition. We wanted to create a bold statement that would allow the kitchen area to shine, while at the same time function well for our client.” By reconfiguring the layout, circulation within the kitchen was greatly improved. What was once an inefficient cramped area became one in which family and friends could congregate and cook comfortably.

A long island allows the homeowners to work uninterrupted while visiting with guests, and a table carefully integrated into the design serves as an informal breakfast area. Appliances, such as the refrigerator and wall ovens, are organized into two distinct zones that give the space an open and generous feel. Typical wall cabinets were omitted in favor of large below-counter drawers, and two wall-mounted shelves floating on a tile backsplash extend to the ceiling. This large bank of cabinets also conceals the requisite small appliances while maintaining the minimalist aesthetic. Contemporary choices in cabinetry, countertops and lighting, as well as stainless steel appliances and cork flooring, give the kitchen a sleek yet warm and welcoming feel. “TAO + LEE successfully accomplished our vision for this space,” says the homeowner, “and although we chose most of the finishes, we certainly relied on Helen Lee’s expertise and Jay Reeve’s innate understanding of the direction of our project. Our contractor, Fred Lang, was also instrumental, giving sound advice and providing excellent workmanship. We are excited that our kitchen renovation turned out even better than we had hoped.” See page 56 for design resources.

Built Right . . . Off-Site. CONTEMPRI HOMES SHOWCASES A NEW CUSTOM OFFSITE STICK BUILT HOME AT THE 2011 ST. LOUIS HOME BUILDERS HOME & GARDEN SHOW

Built in Contempri’s climate controlled facility by skilled craftsmen using precise machinery and advanced methods, the spectacular, one-and-a-half-story rustic contemporary vacation home that will be on display at the Home & Garden Show this March will be one you won’t want to miss.

Q +A

Q: What’s an off-site stick-built home?

A: Custom designed to fit the building site and surroundings, each Contempri home uses individual segments, called modules – the building blocks of modular homes – which are up to 90% complete and shipped from the factory to the home site. All walls, floors, ceilings, stairs, cabinetry, wall finishes, and even the roof are completed in the factory before shipment. The homes are even wired and plumbed. Floor coverings, heating and cooling systems and most exterior work is done on-site. Once all the building materials arrive at the factory, some manufacturers can assemble modules in a single day. Typically, a two-story, 2,500-square-foot home can be constructed in a factory in under a week! When the modules have been constructed, they are ready to be delivered and set. Trucks deliver the modules to the site where they are lifted by crane and placed onto

the permanent foundation. Contempri’s own set crew will put the modules together on the foundation. Once the modules are set on the foundation at the home site, final completion by your local builder takes about a month. Choose your style – traditional or contemporary, ranch or Craftsman, complex or simple – the choices are endless. Off-site stick built homes are especially great for a second home or vacation getaway.

Q: What’s the quality? A: Each Contempri home is constructed using the same building codes that traditional site-built homes use and should not be restricted by building or zoning regulations. Your registered contractor will require that the foundation you choose be built using strict local building codes and specifications. He or she can help you choose the right foundation for your home, be it a basement style or one with a crawl space beneath the home. Modular homes are inspected at the factory during each phase of construction and

an independent third party inspection agency approves each home before it is delivered to the home site. And be assured, these homes are strong and long-lasting. In fact, modular construction has been used heavily in the rebuilding efforts of areas devastated by hurricanes and natural disasters. Plus, because the homes are built off-site in a controlled indoor environment, the materials used are never exposed to the elements.

Q: Are they green? A: Yes! Absolutely green. By their very nature, off-site stick built homes are eco-friendly. “We have an environmentally conscious mindset at Contempri,” says president John Perry, “and use only builder green materials for each of our homes.” Assembly indoors contributes to reduced waste of material at the factory and the job site, lessens the environmental impact on the land and the community, allows for a tighter built structure to maximize energy efficiency and requires less manpower to get the job done. In addition, Contempri’s Advanced Insulation process uses soy-based foam to eliminate air infiltration. The construction process of modular homes allows for easier identification and filling of gaps around pipes, windows, electrical outlets and doors.

Q: Ready to buy one? A: If you think that an off-site stick built home might be right for you, first contact Contempri Homes to locate your local builder. Most modular manufacturers market and sell their homes through local builders or developers who will work with you throughout the process from lot selection to site preparation. Site preparation includes building a foundation, assuring the home is weather-tight, doing the finish work, taking care of utility hook-ups and any additions such as porches or decks.

Check it out! Make sure you stop by and tour the fabulous Contempri home on display at the 2011 St. Louis home Builders Home & Garden Show. Euroscape, located in Hazelwood, has created the “ultimate backyard” to complement this spectacular residence. This outdoor living paradise, which uses elegant Belgard® pavers, includes a pergola, circular patio, outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven and a two-sided contemporary fireplace that according to Euroscape’s owner, Scott Rae, is “unlike anything you’ve ever seen!” Euroscape specializes in all phases of masonry and concrete, offering complete landscape designs, as well as plot and elevation plans.

SAVVY STYLE

for Second Homes “A SECOND HOME SHOULD BE FUN,” says Gigi Lombrano, ASID, of Frank Patton Interiors. The prestigious St. Louis design firm, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, will be transforming Contempri’s spectacular offsite stick built home into a vacation paradise at the 2011 St. Louis Home Builders Home & Garden Show in March. “The story and a half residence, which includes a loft and bedroom upstairs, will have a rustic contemporary style,” explains Gigi. “As with all second homes, we will concentrate on making the spaces unique and fun, low-maintenance and carefree. After all this is a getaway, a place where you go to relax and make memories. It should be different than a primary residence.” Views are also so important, Gigi advises, when planning a second home. “Make sure you take advantage of what’s outside your windows,” she urges. “Bring the outside in.” With that tenet in mind, the talented designers at Frank Patton Interiors have chosen warm, spicy hues and rich sable browns, interspersed with bright primary tones to saturate the home in nature’s own color palette. Handplaned, distressed woods play on the naturalistic feel of the space. “This home will have a modern, lodge-like feel,” notes Gigi. “It would be comfortable in the Colorado Rockies or on a pristine lake in the Midwest.” The home will be designed with a soothing blend of Arts & Crafts detailing and punctuated with the crisp, edgier accents of the loft movement. Bead board in the baths will add a warm, comfortable cottage feel to the home. “We are excited to provide the interior design for this exceptional home,” says Gigi. “It is shaping up to be an extraordinary space.” Frank Patton Interiors has designed second homes for clients across the country, making them uniquely suited for this project.
