A newly available event and wedding venue, the North Coast Hitching Post, sits atop Table Bluff, overlooking meadows and the Pacific Ocean. The massive redwood barn was built in 1914, and was originally a hay barn. Roman and Heidi Rubalcava, a retired Fire Captain and RN respectively, bought the property in 2020. They were inspired by the beauty of the old barn, the privacy, and the expansive ocean views. The barn features a large, wooden dance floor, an authentic western saloon with a 20ft-long redwood bar, an indoor arbor made of old barn wood, and a covered, outdoor area on the ocean side of the barn. The venue also includes tables and chairs for 200 guests. For icing on the cake, there is an 1885 DeSoto doctors’ buggy which makes a lovely photo op, as does the gorgeous, full-size carousel horse. The barn is still a working barn, with horse stalls and antique tractors restored by Roman. Roman is also a farrier, who prefers to hot-shoe horses. Horse boarding is available. The one bedroom+den cottage has ocean views from the kitchen, bedroom, and den. It features a wood-burning stove, full kitchen, laundry room, large jetted tub, and a private outdoor clawfoot tub. The cottage can be rented with the venue or separately. Imagine soaking in the outdoor tub while your horse is getting new shoes…tomorrow, you’ll ride across the meadow, look out at the ocean, and say “I Do.” Contact Heidi for more information or to schedule a tour at (707) 954-2771.

Cara and her husband Robert (who owns and runs JSK 5.0 Humboldt Martial Arts) have been members of the community since 1990 when they moved to Fortuna to raise their family. Together, they have two children and five granddaughters and have been married for 34 years. After completing her microblading training in Rocklin, Cara was looking for a change and started looking at locations in Fortuna. “It was the best decision that I have ever made. I came home [after training] and found my little shop on 11th Street a week later.” After months of remodels and inspections, Cara was able to open her shop. She says that it was “meant to be” and chose Fortuna because of the “friendly and welcoming feeling you get when you’re here.” Being able to offer something new was really exciting for her. Byran McWaters, local artist and owner of MaDMeTaLs, loves sharing his unique and edgy metal creations with the community. “I like taking an idea and making a cool 3D piece of art from it,” Byran shared. If you have passed by Fortuna’s Welcome Sign at Kenmar Road, you will have seen a rotating display of metal figures against the sun, celebrating local events like the Daffodil Show, Fortuna Rodeo, and Apple Harvest Festival. MaDMeTaLs helped collaborate on that project by creating all the metal pieces. If you take a drive through Fortuna during the holidays, you are bound to see a few “jive” turkeys that will catch your eye, a surprise project by Byran that kept the community guessing as to where they came from and how they popped up around town. Many MaDMeTaLs projects can be seen around Fortuna, displayed by local businesses and residents alike. He has created many business signs and commissioned pieces, like that giant buckle for the 100th anniversary of the Fortuna Rodeo. “Every sign I build is hugely influenced by
my customer,” he said. If you’re looking for something fun for your garden, check out one of his many “FrEakY FloWeRs,” rock monsters, or sea creatures. All pieces are made from metal tanks and repurposed to not only bring beauty but also help reduce waste in landfills. “Each piece leads to another and I am constantly learning and morphing techniques and styles,” he said. In addition to his beautiful custom art, Byran also makes custom trophies, fun swag items like bottle openers, and commissioned pieces. The MaDMeTaLs shop on N Street is a wonderland of ideas, art pieces in progress, and many beautiful, completed pieces. See more of Byran’s art on his website at madmetals.us or visit him in person at 1022 N Street. Byran can be reached at (707) 362-6773. Photo credit: Byran McWaters

ild Souls Ranch is a Therapeutic Equine Youth and Family Services nonprofit organization providing local at-risk youth with Equine Assisted Growth and Learning services, a Wraparound Program for children adopted out of Foster Care, and a Colt Training Program as Tip Trainers for the Mustang Heritage Foundation. Started in 2013 by Savanah McCarty, Wild Souls Ranch has grown and expanded, both in services offered, staffing, and herd size, allowing them to help more and more families each year. In 2017, Wild Souls Ranch moved to Fortuna to
rent property purchased and renovated by Marion Brown. Recently, through an extraordinary partnership opportunity and significant grant funding by the USDA, they were able to purchase the property from Marion and are now full owners. “This purchase provides Wild Souls Ranch an opportunity to have a ‘forever home’ and there are no plans to change a thing,” said Amy Scolari, Community Outreach & Development Director. While McCarty stepped down as executive director in 2021, the team continues the legacy of providing the highest quality of care to the youth and families of Humboldt County. “We are forever grateful for Marion’s willingness to sell us the property, and for her patience in the extremely long escrow process, and wish to specifically thank Reef Atwell, our USDA Representative out of Santa Rosa, Matt Allen of Humboldt Equity, Tom Hiller of Benchmark Realty who represented Marion Brown, Rick Phillis of Phillis Appraisal, and

The official Measure E ballot stated: MEASURE E: FORTUNA POLICE AND ESSENTIAL SERVICES MEASURE To protect and maintain essential City services, including increasing and restoring police officers and programs, repairing aging/deteriorating streets and potholes, parks maintenance, and programs for youth and seniors, shall the City of Fortuna establish a ¾ cent sales tax, sun setting in 8 years providing approximately $1,200,000 annually, requiring independent annual financial audits and a Community Oversight Committee, with all funds remaining in Fortuna. The Measure E Committee was sworn-in on March 7, 2017, and it meets five times per year with special meetings as necessary. The Committee works closely with City Finance Director/Council Liaison Aaron Felmlee, City Manager Merritt Perry, and Deputy City Clerk Buffy Gray. Measure E revenue is directed to four City departments: City Hall/Administration, Police, Public Works, and Parks and Recreation. Completed and future projects will be detailed in future articles. F
ortuna Parks & Recreation recently received a donation of a new mower, donated by Valley Pacific (Renner Petroleum’s parent company). The mower is a 2021 Toro 7000 Z-Master, valued at $48,000. This is the largest mower owned by the City (96” deck width) and it will be used for open park spaces and sports turf areas. According to Cameron Mull, Fortuna Director of Parks and Recreation, “This new mower will allow our department greater mowing efficiency which reduces staff hours on turf maintenance; this will save public funds while also providing an exceptional unit of equipment that we plan to utilize for many years.” Pictured left-to-right: Parks & Rec Director Cameron Mull, Mayor Sue Long, and City Councilmember Mike Johnson.
