from thepublishers We’re not exactly bird people but we‘ve never had a problem with hummingbirds. Just with their feeders. However, when I lucked up on one that didn’t look like a run-over plastic cup from a kegger, we became those people. Hummingbird people. And the description remains accurate. We have one hummingbird. They say it takes a while for others to show up but maybe Mr. Hummingbird has no interest in spreading the news of his new find. Run your mouth and you might spoil things. And then you’d be covered up with loud and sloppy birds guzzling down nectar after 5pm and ordering blooming onions. Crowd or no crowd, this feeder has already attracted its first bar fly: Angelo the cat. We have seen Angelo jump at Mr. Hummingbird once or twice, only for him to return from the maple tree and stick his beak in the feeder for more. We think this is part of the dance. How do we know for sure? Hundreds of black birds swooped into a nearby tree the other evening and Angelo didn’t flinch. I immediately thought about introducing them to the sound of Ginger but before I could even leave the room and summon her, the birds had flown away. And Angelo

stayed put, watching Mr. Hummingbird dart back and forth from the maple tree to the feeder. Adam could care less about the dangling contraption. These days, he is all about filling up his shopping cart with junk. Today we have a foam brush, a piece of train track, and a DIY toy made up of a long bolt and three washers that slide up and down the length of it. The shopping cart has room for more junk. Including diapers for Adam’s soon-to-be-born sibling. And maybe even a hummingbird feeder. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Montirius, Sarrians, France The vineyard of Montirius deserves more than the few paragraphs I write here, but perhaps these scant words will be enough to peak your interest and you can, with Montirius, begin your own love affair. Montirius sits a little north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and southeast of Orange in the southern RhĂ´ne Valley. The warm, sensual, heady reds of the southern RhĂ´ne are easy to fall for, but Montirius is perhaps the benchmark by which all are, or should be, measured. Christine and Eric Saurel of Montirius are fifth generation vintners and they farm 100 % biodynamically, with many of their current vineyards dating back to 1925. Biodynamics, the oldest organic agriculture movement dating from 1924, began when Rudolph Steiner linked poor quality food with poor health. Central European farmers felt that the industrialization of agriculture had rendered “their soils less healthy, their seeds less fertile,

their crops less nourishing and their own health less certain.â€? (Monty Waldin) In short, bad farming had produced bad food. Biodynamy takes food back to its natural state and involves various practices such as planting with the phases of the moon. Yet when I look around to the vast majority of food, health food stores and farmers’ markets notwithstanding, it seems that bad farming is continuing to win. What we can do besides educating ourselves, is to buy organic food and wine and buy locally. Montirius, Vacqueyras, “Le Closâ€? 2006 - It’s not hard for me to sing the praises of Vacqueyras. Those who know me know this is the wine I call “my heart wine.â€? Not as in good for the heart (although it is) which is an adequate enough reason to drink wine, if not ideal. But as in a wine I hold close to my heart. I can’t remember when or why my love for Vacqueyras began, but I do know it’s endured. The cuvĂŠe “Le Closâ€? is intense. An equal blend of Grenache and Syrah, it is dark, rich and complex. A wine for serious food and special

occasions. You can drink it now or hold it for another five or ten years. $31.99 Montirius, Vacqueyras, “Garrigueâ€? – The cuvĂŠe Garrigue is named for the soil on which its grown‌that scruffy land of wild, windswept herbs, inhospitable to growing much save olive tress and vines, yet for some of us, as breathtakingly beautiful and as it is untamed. The average age of these vines (70% Grenache and 30% Syrah) is 55 years. The wine is aged without oak so you can taste the pure essence of the grapes. Rich and deeply-scented, with spice and finesse. $28.99 Montirius, Gigondas,Terre des AĂŽnes – The weightiest of the gang, perhaps due to the addition of 20% Mourvèdre (the rest Grenache). The Gigondas is spicy, dense, peppery, with hints of coffee and anise, and again aged without oak. A match for strong cheese, game and nights before the fireplace‌coming soon.

[ this month’s question ]

I love the natural light and views in my home but I don’t like blinds, & everything is Fading and it is Hot!

What Can I do?

What a great question! Before I answer it, please let me introduce myself. My name is Darin Martin, and I am a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, and a local business owner. Having said that , I truly understand why people move to Nelson County, and never leave. It is a place that is rich in history, culturally diverse, relatively small, and of course the natural beauty. Ah yes, the majestic views of the Blue Ridge, the spring flowers, the plush greens of summer, and the lovely golds, oranges, and crimsons of Autumn. Most people I know, including myself want to enjoy our natural surroundings as much as possible. We hike, bike, take walks, Sunday drives, and play golf. Another trend I have noticed over the years is that we want to enjoy all of those splendors even when we don’t have time to be active or just want to relax. One way this has been accomplished is by adding more, and larger windows to our homes. The upsides to doing this are obvious. We receive much more natural light, and of course those views! Unfortunately, everything has a downside. We didn’t consider how much heat enters our home through the glass. Then there’s that awful fading. Who knew that the sun destroyed everything so fast. Now are floors, furniture, carpet, and artwork are a different color. This brings us back to the original question. What can I do? Since blinds and curtains only work when they are closed, they block our wonderful views, and they eliminate our natural light. They also are difficult to clean, have to be replaced or repaired periodically, and don’t work well on reducing the heat that passes through our windows. The simple yet extremely effective solution is window film. Window film is also known as window tinting. This is how window film works. It is applied to the inside of your windows, and is a filter of all of the harmful aspects of sunlight. Window film blocks 99.9% of the UVA/UVB rays, infrared and solar heat gain, and glare. The wonderful thing about window film is that it still

allows natural light into your home. Oh, I almost forgot about your majestic views. When window film is applied to your home you will still be able to see all of your views! In fact, your views and colors may be more distinct than clear glass. The company I own is Clear View Window Tinting. We are proud dealers of 3M Window Films. 3M was recently ranked #3 in Business Weekly’s “World’s 25 Most Innovative Companies” list, and ranked #12 on Forbes “America’s Most Reputable Companies” list. Not only did 3M invent window films, but they are the only company that produces its own polyester and makes its own adhesives. This ensures the film will be optically clear, and is made to last a lifetime. 3M backs all of their window films with a lifetime warranty. 3M window films have been recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. 3M has recently awarded Clear View Window Tinting with one of only eight national awards for outstanding growth. We have achieved this by offering the best consultations, installations, and service in the industry. Our biggest goal is to have the opportunity to educate homeowners. Our consultations include applying samples to your windows, then explaining the differences between each sample. What’s great about 3M window films is they come in many varieties and perform very well. 3M has invented films that are clear to dark to everything in between. 3M window films significantly out perform all other window treatments as far as UVA/UVB and solar heat reduction. So open your blinds, and remove your sheets off the furniture and get the natural sunlight and views you deserve, because 3M window films is so beautiful you won’t even notice them. Make your home more comfortable by using a brand you can trust in 3M and a local company that understands window film better than anyone in the area. Twenty some odd years ago, Grant Massie started making walking sticks, a childhood pastime that he learned while spending time on his grandfather’s farm. But after no time at all, a few walking sticks turned into a whole lot of walking sticks. But Grant kept making them. Until one day his wife said

the walking sticks had to go. Grant Massie poses with a dogwood limb at his home in Lowesville (right). The curls in the wood are caused by a vine that grows entwined with the tree. The unusual tree branches often are used as a centerpiece in a piece of furniture made by Massie. Below, he adds a support to a stool that he’s making.

“She suggested that I sell them,” said the retired Amherst County Planning Director. “I had never really thought about that.” And a few shows later, Grant was indeed selling those hand-crafted walking sticks. “I was surprised that people were willing to pay money for them,” he said. Grant didn’t carve the walking sticks. There were no faces or animals on the sticks – he said that a lot of people have those skills but he’s just not one of them. No, Grant goes out to find wood and is attracted to its natural shape. But after years and years of making walking sticks, Grant was itching to do something different.

12 NELSON COUNTY LIFE SEPTEMBER 2010

“And I got the bright idea that if I took some of these walking sticks and screwed them together, I could make something. Make a chair, make a love seat,” he said. “So I did that and people liked those.” He started with a love seat for his parents and just kept on going. Now he makes love seats, tables, beds, chairs, you name it. “I rarely even do walking sticks anymore,” said the craftsman. Many Nelsonians have probably seen Grant’s work without even realizing it, as he displays benches and tables out at Devils Backbone Brewing Company. A longtime family friend, Steve Crandall, owner of DBBC, and Grant were talking one day as Steve was getting ready to open the brewery. They decided that instead of plastic chairs, Steve would use Grant’s hand crafted benches on the front patio of his restaurant for people to sit on while they waited for friends or an open table. Steve, who personally owns one of Grant’s first benches, gets use of the benches for free, but under the condition that they’re for sale. “And if somebody buys it, I just put another bench there,” said Grant. “So [Steve] gets benches for people to sit in and I get to display. It works out well for both of us.” Grant doesn’t spend a whole lot of time reshaping or putting together his pieces. He says that he simply takes walks in the woods and sees furniture in the branches. His customers always claim they’ve never seen anything like

Grant Massie uses mainly hand tools to fashion unusually shaped tree limbs into rustic furniture at his home in Lowesville. Stools, chairs and beds are among some of the pieces Grant makes.

the pieces of wood he uses to create his furniture, but he disagrees. He just says what most people see as a branch, he sees as an arm to a love seat. “What my stuff does is it brings a lot of interestingly-shaped pieces of wood together – different colors, different types of wood,” said Grant, who said he’s not driven by the kind of wood, necessarily, but the shape of it. “People are used to seeing a chair that is totally made of Ash or Hickory or Oak or Maple, but my stuff might have Dogwood and Cherry … or (even) Paradise Tree.” Grant never took a lesson in furniture building, nor did he have to spend years reading up on the subject. He said he’s been building things his whole life and had a pretty good idea of the structural end, and the real learning curve was on the craft side of things. “If you’ve seen [my work], you’ll see that my joints are not sophisticated. That really isn’t what I’m all about,” said the craftsman who uses only hand tools. He explained that nowadays, you can buy tools that will make precise joints and that all storebought furniture and the majority of today’s craft furniture have nearly perfect joints. But that’s not his style. “I do mine by hand, it’s a different thing,” he said. NCL

winetime

A bottle of Democracy Vineyards Village View Gold apple wine sits among some recently picked Ginger Gold apples, that the wine is made from. Vineyard owner Jim Turpin picked some of this year’s crop.

14 NELSON COUNTY LIFE AUGUST 2010

In the summer of 1969, Hurricane Camille ripped through Nelson County and would never be forgotten. The storm did a lot of damage, but perhaps there is one happy accident to come out of Camille – the Ginger Gold apple. Though it wasn’t introduced into the fruit market until the 1980s, the Ginger Gold has been in existence since the late 1960s and gained much of its popularity due to the fact that it is one of the earliest varieties to become ripe – the fruit is generally ready for picking around the first of August. This year, it was already ripe in Nelson County in July. The apple is named officially for Ginger Harvey, who owned what is now Democracy Vineyards with her husband, Clyde, during the summer of Hurricane Camille. During the storm, their orchard was nearly destroyed, but Clyde discovered a tree different from the other survivors that produced a yellow apple. “As far as anyone can tell, it’s a cross between an Albemarle Pippen (an old cider apple), and a golden delicious,” said Jim Turpin who owns Democracy Vineyard and has recently started making wine from the land’s Ginger Golds – what he believes is a first. “The apple tends to be acidic. It’s not overly sweet,” said Jim. Jim Turpin (along with wife, Susan Prokop) has owned the vineyard property for about four years now, but the history of the orchard dates back generations in his family. In fact, the name of the Ginger Gold apple wine – The Village View Gold

– comes from the original name of the orchard when his aunt, Ruby Turpin, owned it in the 1940s and ‘50s. The picture on the label of that wine is a reproduction of Roby’s Village View apple label and features a picture of what is today the Orchard House Bed and Breakfast. “We actually stayed at Orchard House one of our first trips to Nelson,” said Jim, whose wine was featured at the B&B’s first Community Dinner July 15. After Ruby Turpin owned the orchard, her son Ralph sold it to the Harveys to whom, along with Camille, the Ginger Gold is credited. After some time spent in ownership by Tom Bomar (Mountain Cove Orchard), Jim got at least a portion of the property back into Turpin hands but for a bit of a different use. “It’s been an apple orchard for retail and for processing,” he explained. “We wanted to do something with the apples a little different.” In addition to the apple wine, Democracy Vineyards produces four different grape wines: two of which are red blends, one white varietal, and one white blend. As for the Village View Gold, Democracy Vineyard’s one very unique apple wine, Jim says it is possible that it is the only wine made from Ginger Gold apples. “It’s 2 percent residual sugar so it’s not really sweet. And it’s 8 percent alcohol which is more than a hard cider but less than a full body wine,” he said. “What it made for, was a very different apple wine.” NCL

Sally Rose Monnes is just 19 years old, but she’s been writing songs since she was 8 years old, started playing guitar at age 11 and was out performing in public before she even made it to high school. She still performs often at local venues including Rapunzel’s and Basic Necessities, but has spread out to regional venues like Gravity Lounge, too. She describes her music as acoustic indie

folk and now, just barely one year after graduation, she’s released her second album – Heat Lightening. “This album is a huge reflection of the past year for me,” said the young woman who also serves at Basic Necessities, baby sits part time and teaches music at North Branch School and at Joe’s shop – Blue Star. live, but it was probably best because I didn’t have enough time to get nervous and all my answers were entirely candid.” They asked her how she started (writing songs at age 8) and what inspires her (life and personal experiences) and what I would tell a kid who wanted to begin to play (“be yourself – don’t try to make a sound that’s already been created.”). “It was interesting because those are hard things to think of on the spot,” said Sally Rose, “but it was really exciting.” She may very well be on her way to stardom, but she has her dream job in mind already: “It is certainly a dream for me to be able to play music all over the world because I love to travel and music is my deepest passion,” said Sally Rose. “But I love to teach. I love teaching kids so much. So I guess my goal is to be able to be at the point where I could play music and have teaching be a hobby.” NCL

in between taking orders at Basic Necessities in Nellysford, Sally Rose was approached by Virginia This Morning CBS 6 anchor Greg McQuade. “She had such an angelic voice and she was so cheerful and friendly,” he said. He asked Sally Rose to come perform on his morning news show that often features local and nationally-known musicians. “This actually was the first time I would discover a musician. I’ve had many guests that I’ve booked, but this was the first time I’ve had a musician.” “She just wowed everyone at the station,” said the news anchor. Sally Rose was on television years ago with her mom’s band, but said that didn’t prepare her at all for her recent TV debut in which she performed live and then sat down for an interview. “It was such an adrenaline rush, but it was so much fun,” she said. “He started counting down and I was freaking out because everything was

The guys at Blue Mountain Brewery say this year’s hop harvest grew ten-fold from previous years’ yields thanks to a planting by Nellysford-based horticulturist Stan Driver. Roughly 30 to 40% of the harvest is being used to brew a Cascade Tribute Ale. The remainder will be used later for other beers such as the Full Nelson.

The importance of photos in real estate marketing

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

If you know me, you know that I can be pretty serious at times. In real estate, or life in general, I can evaluate, calculate, analyze, re-analyze, and sometimes forget how important the simple things can be. There are instances when the really simple things can make all the difference, hence, let’s revisit the basic fundamentals of marketing. According to the National Association of Realtors, 90% of buyers will use the internet throughout the course of their home search. The two most popular internet resources are the MLS and Realtor.com with property pictures primarily driving the search. A picture can be worth a thousand words so be sure to avoid these buyer-repelling problems: No pictures; Oh, how many times have I pulled up a just-listed property and found not a single photo? As an agent, I can’t sell your property if I don’t know what is being offered. So

it stands to reason that a buyer can’t make a purchase decision without a photo either. Your property must have pictures in the MLS on the same day that it is listed. The first few days on market are critical. The property will be on an agent’s hot sheet as a new listing. In addition, the MLS details will be emailed to potential prospects within 24 hours of being listed. For example, if a buyer wants a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home in Nellysford, and your home meets those requirements, that prospect will be emailed MLS information to flag the new listing as a potential match. If there is no picture, you have missed an incredible opportunity to win over that home buyer. Too few photos; if there are missing photos, buyers may assume that there is a problem. They may think that the home is outdated or poorly maintained preventing sufficient pictures from being taken.

My mom never misses a marketing opportunity.

The Charlottesville MLS allows 50 pictures to be uploaded and Realtor.com permits 25. A good rule of thumb is to upload 25 photos. Strike a balance between giving potential buyers enough pictures, while not losing them by taking too much time to download. Pictures should also tell a story. Hence, pictures should not randomly jump from the shed to the bathroom to the living room; they should be assembled in a manner that flows and makes sense to the buyer. Poor photo quality; Photographs are powerful bait. Good ones can lure buyers; poor ones can turn them away. Make sure that interior and exterior photos have ample light. Use a wide angle camera lens to magnify the distance between objects and showcases a room’s depth. If rooms still appear small, remove area rugs that can break up the expanse of the floor and can make rooms look smaller. Get creative with furniture

and make sure that it does not block views or walkways or overcrowd a room. Fill up an empty space; sometimes nothing in a room can make a room appear smaller and less inviting. Remove clutter so that rooms don’t appear cramped and rob the viewer of key features. While you rely on the expertise of a professional to properly market your home, don’t just assume that everything is being done to your standards, or more importantly to the standards of a prospective buyer. If the basics, like photos and descriptions are missing or inadequate, is the agent really committed to getting your house sold?

Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

STORY by JENNIE TAL

Look out – Nelson County has a brand new community dining experience. Richard Bulissa, who owns and operates the Orchard House with his wife, Deborah, said that they just got together with The Rock Barn Catering Company’s Chef Ben Thompson and decided to start offering dinners to the local community. “I think it’s an opportunity for people in the area to experience

some fine dining without having to go into Charlottesville,” said Lynn Stevonson who attended the first dinner. “All the food that [Ben] produces, everything that he does is with local farm products and local vendors,” said Richard. “His meats and everything are all locally prepared – as much as he can get from Nelson County as possible.” Each dinner features one local

winery and a delectable four-course meal. “The presentation was beautiful,” said Lynn. “Plus, they were delicious.” During an evening wine tasting, guests will sample canapés like chilled English cucumber soup. Then they’ll choose a glass of wine sit down for fresh salad, entrée, and dessert featuring local foods. All for $35 per person. NCL

Who Rings Your (Warning) Bell? You lead a busy life. You’re working hard, maybe more than one job, or in these tough times, maybe you’ve been let go and are hard at work looking for work. You’re raising the kids, maybe taking care of frail parents. You’ve got Scouts, T-ball or soccer, church or civic committees; the car’s on the fritz and the house needs repair. So when they have that special election next month to vote on the whatever it is for the county board of something—who has time? The hard-working citizens of Bell, California (population 40,000) were also busy making ends meet when their council called a special election. Only 400 or so voters cast ballots, and guess what? The Council members then voted themselves astronomical salaries and pensions. More than elected officials in nearby L.A.!

Here in Nelson County we have a warning bell—the regular, independent reports provided by Rural Nelson to more than 600 residents county-wide. For 10 years Rural Nelson has provided regular, objective reports on meetings of local officials, including the Board of Supervisors, the Planning Commission and the Economic Development Authority. No regular media presence other than Rural Nelson provides this important watchdog function.

But now Rural Nelson is in danger of folding. We need to have existing subscribers donate and new subscribers join up (and donate), or we will have to fold. We need citizen involvement, too. Won’t you please help fund and/or work with this worthy effort? You’ve got two easy ways, listed below, to say, “I Hear the Bell—It Tolls For Me.” • www.ruralnelson.org has a Paypal button. It’s easy and credit card friendly. • You may mail a donation to Rural Nelson, PO Box 401, Lovingston, VA 22949 For more information, please email: info@ruralnelson.org or post a letter to the mailbox.

Thank you!

Nelson County’s

soccer scene [ It’s getting big.] STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER

Liam Holt enjoys a joke during a break at the U.K. International Soccer Camp.

Eleven-year-old Blake Wheaton is seriously learning how to Bend it Like Beckham. Or at least like Landon Donovan, the American soccer player who got a lot of press this year during the World Cup. The Nelson County Middle Schooler and about 100 other local young soccer players recently spent two weeks of summer vacation participating in the UK International Soccer Camp held at the Rockfish Valley Ruritan Park. “This camp I worked on tricks to get around the defender, dribbling, passing, sending, shooting and ball control,” said the rising 6th grader who

will be playing soccer this year on a metro team in Charlottesville. At camp this year, his coaches included Scott Currie from Scotland, Matt Lee from England and several other young adults from Europe. Across the United States, more than 35,000 children in more than 600 communities like Nelson County participate in a UK International Soccer Camp with coaches from the UK and Europe, South American and around the world, according to Janice Wheaton, Blake’s mother and the Nelson County UK International Soccer Camp coordinator.

“Each coach is internationally qualified,” explained Janice. “Some of them even have professional or semiprofessional playing experience.” Scott Currie, the camp director for the second week of Nelson’s camp, actually went to college on a soccer scholarship at Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia. After he finished school, he signed a nine-month contract with UK International Soccer Camps and has been working with them since March. “I really enjoy working with kids,” he said. “At school, I was studying education. In order to

take on the job here, you have to be able to work with kids. You have to have a fun personality, be energetic.” Scott, whose contract will run out this fall, is definitely interested in participating again next year – and so is Blake, mostly due to the great coaching he gets. He loves working with the international coaches who are just as – if not more – excited about the sport than he is. “They are entertaining and they know a lot about soccer,” he said. “They teach a lot of skills and I just like the camp better.”

Janice said that the popularity of the camp is definitely due to the quality of the coaching and the low coach-to-camper ratio. Another advantage is definitely the inexpensive tuition and the fact that it’s right here in the community. “My boys really enjoy being with the coaches,” said Janice. “Blake loves their accents.” He keeps trying to teach them how to say “hamburger” with an American accent, but they have some trouble – just like Steve Martin did in The Pink Panther. Janice said that while she hasn’t signed an official contract for next year, the camp is almost

certainly coming back to Nelson County next year. Since her son began in 2004 with just 13 campers, the Nelson County UK International Soccer Camp has grown exponentially. Next year, Janice hopes to offer one recreation level camp and three Youth Development Program camps (an intense program for more advanced players) between July 25 and Aug. 5, 2011. And Landon Donovan, that famous soccer player? Yea, he participated in a UK International Soccer Camp in his community, growing up, too. Who knows where Blake Wheaton will end up? NCL

WEIGHTLIFTING

Have you ever wondered what exercise can do for you? Call us and find out! "At the beginning of the summer, I was reading through 'Nelson County Life' when I saw an ad for 5 Star Fitness. What caught my eye was the description for the Healthy Start program. At one day per week (for four weeks) and $150. everything about it seemed manageable, not to mention the fact that I desperately needed a healthy start! My weight was creeping up a few pounds every year while my activity level was inching downward. It was getting harder and harder to blame the cleaners for those tightening waistbands. It all came to a head when my doctor prescribed a cholesterol-lowering statin drug and recommended I lose at least 25 pounds. I'm not one to take much medicine except an occasional aspirin. I immediately felt the results of this medicine and it wasn't much fun. My joints were achy and I felt lethargic but it was lowering my cholesterol and my doctor was happy. I wasn't. I called 5 Star fitness and spoke to George, the owner. While I was determined to get in shape, my enthusiasm started to ooze away as my first appointment

approached. After all, I'd 'done' the gym thing before. I didn't like the way they smelled nor did I like the noise. Getting weighed was now a significant emotional event, and not in a good way! On the morning of my first appointment, I diffidently walked into the gym, expecting the worst. A class was finishing up and strangely, you could almost hear a pin drop! The soft music and cozy, immaculate surroundings immediately drew me in. George quietly introduced himself so as not to disturb the class. This low-key beginning would set the tone for the next four weeks. I showed up in shorts, t-shirt, and flip-flops. The shorts and t-shirt worked but the flip flops didn't. I was on the treadmill almost immediately because George wanted to see how fit I was. A pleasant conversation ensued as George subtly assessed my fitness level. Was I getting out of breath? At what speed could I comfortably converse? How much could I push myself? Could I walk more briskly than I thought? Throughout the first session, including during the dreaded weigh-in, George maintained his low key approach. I felt my confidence growing as I told myself "I can do this." And I did. For the next four weeks, I

The idea to color the trucks pink to raise breast cancer awareness began some three to five years ago. And once the pink Tiger Fuel trucks hit the roads this year, heads began turning. “The response has been tremendous,” Tim says. “Even when we were working with the trucks trying to get them ready for the road and

Personal Training & Wellness Studio followed the workout regimen that gradually increased in complexity. Slow walking morphed into fast walking; simple weight routines turned into an exercise regimen that included exercise machines (these have always intimated me!). Before the end of the month, I was even working in a little spin exercise. I was gaining strength, stamina, and confidence. And my waistbands started to ease up. Part of the 4 week program includes a diet assessment. I kept a food journal for 5 days and e-mailed it to George for an assessment. It turned out I actually needed to add calories! Good calories that is, like fiber rich fruits and vegetables. After the 4 week program, I find that I am able to stick with the exercise program. And I am more conscious of what I eat. I'm watching the scale go down, albeit slowly. But at least it's going down. Do something good for yourself. Sign up for the healthy start program at 5 Star and start enjoying life again!" getting the decals on them.” As part of its minimum two-year commitment to the program, Tiger Fuel will make a donation to the American Breast Cancer Foundation based on each gallon delivered from the pink trucks. Though the response has been overwhelming, Tim remembers a

time when the drivers were skeptical about the new look. “With our drivers at first, we sensed a little bit of reluctance. The image of a truck and pink color wasn’t typical of a truck driver. But, they’ve seen the response and they want to be a part of it,” Tim says with a chuckle. NCL

I know everyone one of those appointees and elected officials and they truly do care about the county.” But it’s hard to know what the community thinks sometimes – especially when the everyday citizen doesn’t know what’s going on inside those meetings. “There’s no daily paper, there’s no radio station that covers county government, there’s no television station that covers county government,” said Kim. And while there is a weekly paper about county issues, its staff has much more to cover than meetings and can’t make it to them all. But Kim is pretty much always there. “And it’s not just me sitting there,” she said. “I think the boards actually view it as the citizen representative sitting there. That’s what I specialize in – keeping the patient not only comfortable, but clear-minded. In operation since 1999, Rural Nelson says it too, is feeling the financial pinch from the sluggish economy. The organization’s annual $30,000 budget – all raised through donations – seems like it may be unattainable. Without that money, the organization’s popular electronic minutes of Board of Supervisors and other county board meetings may come to a halt. Kim Taylor Cash, a field officer for Rural Nelson, is a known face at the Board of Supervisors meetings. Planning Commission meetings. Not to mention meetings of the Economic Development Authority. Sometimes even the Service Authority or the School Board. Then she publishes the minutes so that citizens of Nelson County can know what’s going on in their community before it’s too late to comment or question. “I think that our Board of Supervisors, our Planning Commission, our Economic Development, all of those board [members] are sitting in those seats because they truly

Whether it is wild cherry (potentially lethal to herbivores), locust, paradise or mimosa, the presence of some types of trees typically leads to a congregation of many. Loppers, chain saws and backhoes sound good on paper, but typically these species are a bit more determined to survive even after they are chopped down and the presence of one viable root leads to a reoccurrence of the same problem. There is hope, however, and it involves practices that many professionals employ for excellent control of noxious trees. It is called tree injecting or painting and not only does it kill the mother plant, but any modified root that has sprouted from her. (Note: These methods are very accurate and lethal practices for killing unwanted species - exercise extreme caution when handling herbicides used in a concentrated solution.) The methods work by wounding or cutting the tree in the early fall (September) as the tree begins to concentrate its flow of nutrients from the leafy top to the roots in a downward motion in preparation for fall and winter. The chemical that you apply to the trees open wound gets in the outer layer of bark (the sapwood or outer layer of lighter colored wood in the cross-section) and gets distributed to the root system where it eventually kills the entire tree and any suckers that share the same root system as the mother plant. Tree injecting is a pinpoint accurate method to control unwanted species of trees literally right beside a desirable species. There are three popular options: cutting, drilling, and wounding. The first method is to simply cut the tree down entirely and then paint the stump with a full concentrate solution of herbicide. However, timing is critical for this to work so if you

don’t have the means to cut down the tree in the early fall, you can use one of these other two methods to kill the tree and then have it cut down when it is feasible. To ‘Drill’, drill a hole about ¾ inch in diameter into the undesired tree, 1 ½ inches deep, about 3 feet from the ground. These drill holes should be made at an angle downward so as to hold the herbicide in the wound that you make. Make a hole every 1-3 inches around the tree. Next, with an old syringe, inject the recommended herbicide into the wound. To ‘wound,’ make discontinuous cuts into the tree’s sapwood about 2 inches long (with a hatchet or machete) at an angle downward so that the wound holds the herbicide. These cuts should be spaced with their edges approximately 1-3 inches apart about 3 feet from the ground (it should look like you swung your hatchet, on the same plane, multiple times around the tree without connecting any of the cuts). Next, with a spray bottle, mist the recommended herbicide onto the wound – it should appear to you as a heavy ‘glaze’ or even a tiny ‘puddle’ of the chemical in the wedge that you just cut. As for choosing your herbicide(s), consult with your local extension agent, arborist or landscape horticulturist for what works on what species. Although this is not a hard process, it may be necessary to employ a professional since some chemicals, for those really nasty species, may not be readily available to homeowners. Be certain that you have properly identified the species applying any herbicides as different trees require different herbicides and concentrations. Until our next article, happy gardening!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I am concerned about my weight, but if everyone is getting heavier, doesn’t that make it normal to be heavy? This column talks a lot about weight, but it is an important topic, and one that we need to deal with, both as individuals and as a society. Just because everyone else is too heavy does not make being obese OK. Obesity is determined by your Body Mass Index (BMI) which is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. A normal BMI is 20-25. Overweight is 26-30 and obesity is defined as BMI greater than 30. A recent report from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) notes that there are more than 72 million adult Americans who are obese. In 2009 there were 2.4 million more obese adult Americans than in 2007. In 2000 no state had an adult obesity rate of more than 30%. In 2009, nine states had adult obesity rates of greater than 30%. Child obesity rates are estimated at 17% for children between 2-19 years old and are rapidly rising. Obesity is a contributing factor in

some of the leadings causes of death, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers. Obesity increases the risk of pregnancy related complications. It is also important for its financial impact. Obese people require medical care which costs an average of $1429 per year more than the medical care of normal weight people! The causes of the obesity epidemic are many and complex. Individuals, communities and schools need to address the causes in order to make significant progress. As individuals we need to watch what we eat, how much we eat and get more exercise. Schools need ensure that they provide healthy meals and high quality physical education. Communities need provide nutritional education, resources so that healthy foods can be obtained and safe areas to exercise, such as walking trails. Paying Attention “It’s so noisy in here I can’t hear myself think!” An exclamation our parents may have uttered at one time or another. Perhaps followed by other expletives. The statement reminds me of the constant external stimuli that bombards us daily. There are televisions everywhere: in the bank, at the grocery store, at the post office. Then there is the iPod, radio and cell phones with game and TV applications. Does this affect your physical self? Sure. The constant external stimuli inhibits your ability to pay attention to your physical and emotional being. How does it affect exercise? The same way it would affect a tennis player if someone yelled while he was trying to serve. Or if a member of your foursome was laughing while you were teeing off. It breaks your concentration. Does it matter if you are just exercising and not competing in a match? Yes. Research has demonstrated that if individuals pay attention to their walking, that their balance will improve and they will have less falls.

That means thinking about lifting your foot, swinging the leg forward, placing the foot on the ground in front of you. Looking at the ground before you for changes in the pavement or other obstacles. For each step. It may require that you don’t walk and talk at the same time. If you are exercising in a gym, being mindful of your gait may require that you are not watching TV or reading simultaneously but paying attention to each step. Paying attention to each breath that you take. Noticing what your arms are doing with each step. Noticing if you take an equal step with each leg. Noticing if you put more weight on one leg or the other. Noticing if one leg tires before the other. Noticing if you tend to trip over your toes as you lift your leg and advance it forward. Noticing what you feel as you go uphill or downhill. Noticing if there are any aches in your feet, knees, hips or low back as you walk. There’s a lot to notice. your sport, or stretching. The benefits are similar to doing yoga. The attention to technique and to your body improves mental focus and is vital to good outcomes and reduction of injuries. As you practice awareness while exercising, you will begin to notice more things about your body. You will know when things are not working well as opposed to ignoring symptoms and allowing the

pain to worsen and become chronic. At first, it may seem boring to exercise without the noise but with practice, you will come to enjoy the peacefulness. As you practice mindfulness and attention to each moment of the day, you will delight in the smallest of treats: a tiny flower, a buzzing butterfly, the slightest breeze on your skin or the smile of a stranger.
