from thepublishers We don’t smoke but I do love the smell of cherry tobacco being puffed from a pipe. I think my Wallabeewearing grandfather used to smoke that stuff. Or maybe it’s my imagination. Either way, it would be nice to hire a little old wrinkly man to puff away in the parlor every now and then. And on days he has to stay at home and putter around, we can hire his wrinkly wife to bake apple crisp. But in the meantime, we have pipe cleaners. You can get them in bundles of 100. They come in assorted colors which implies they are more typically used for crafts than for their namesake. Since we don’t use them for that purpose (as we have yet to hire the wrinkly old man), Adam and I spent our lunch time bending them into letters. He made his first letter by accident. Bending a pipe cleaner into the shape of a “U” requires the same hand motion little boys employ when they grab their mother’s glasses when she’s not looking. He was so impressed with my letter “O” that he immediately delegated to me the task of bending other letters of the alphabet. A “Z” is easy. So is an “S”. “X”s

require you to find the scissors. You’ll need them for “A”. We got through about a third of the alphabet when Adam decided it was time to play outside in his boxwood fort. It was there, as we crouched inside the brittle canopy of these old bushes, that we saw something stick out of the dirt at the base of a nearby magnolia tree: A rusty old horseshoe! “U”! Adam exclaimed, his beaming smile tracing the curve of his dirty letter. I’ve got a feeling the ghost of a little wrinkly man left it there for us. Enjoy! Yvette & Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Love and Wine Visionary, progressive, humanitarian Aquarius notwithstanding, the month of February in Virginia often offers bleak days of gray, and is, for many of us, our least favourite month. While I like winter and don’t even mind dear, truncated February, you have to admit it hasn’t the cachet of October or even April or May. For a long time I was convinced that modern day romantics—not to mention card companies cashing in—came up with the fête of St-Valentine’s midway through to ease us through the short, dreary days till spring nudged. Then I found out the holiday actually dated to Roman times, and who better than Romans to understand the connection between wine and love? Well, perhaps the Greeks. This February when you sip your wine, raise a glass to love. And if you find your tongue tied in toasting, behold below a few quotations to help you through: May our love be like good wine, grow stronger as it grows older. French proverb. Falling in love consists merely in uncorking the imagination and bottling

the common sense. Helen Rowland. And wine can of their wits the wise beguile, make the sage frolic, and the serious smile. Alexander Pope. So life’s year begins and closes; Days though shortening still can shine; What though youth gave love and roses; Age still leaves us friends and wine. Thomas Moore. He who loves not wine, women and song remains a fool his whole life long. Johann Heinrich Voss. A meal without wine is like a life without love. Anonymous. And finally: I’m like old wine. They don’t bring me out very often, but I’m well preserved. Rose Kennedy on her 100th birthday. Valentine’s pick: Allegrini, Palazzo della Torre, 2007 – Woo your lover with this soft-spoken yet generous Italian red. It will cover all the bases. Elegant and expensive tasting; complex and smooth with enough sweet fruit for enticing pleasure, yet balanced by restrained structure and integrity for longevity. $24 St. Valentine’s, however, is not the only trinket this February offers, for following close on love’s heals comes

debauchery…. The festivities of Marti Gras are the turf of Bacchus and Dionysus, those fun-loving, uninhibited gods of wine and pleasure. Marti Gras pick: Domaine Vieux Télégraphe, Télégramme, Châteauneufdu-Pape, 2008 – A famous Châteauneuf producer with a reputation for bold wines that need cellaring. Yet the Télégramme wines from this estate are made in a fruit-forward style, to be drunk younger. Think of a corseted madam, needing the right touch of time to loosen up versus the younger nymph more generous with her flavours. (sic) The sensuality of Châteauneuf-duPape is undeniable, and largely the result of the Grenache grape. Grenache is also a grape known for making ‘hot’ wines. Not hot like the sexy guy or girl who just walked by, but a term that in wine speak means alcoholic. Another attribute of which our friends the gods of revelry would applaud. Full-bodied but honey on the tongue. $45 Provence and the French Riviera, Oct 2012. Wine tasting trip of a lifetime. Markets and vineyards of Provence.. For more details, Kpfaltz@cstone.net

Seeing her husband lying motionless on the floor of their family room, Kay reacted. Fueled by the strength of 40 years of love and devotion, she clenched her fist and aimed for his chest. STORY by YVETTE STAFFORD PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

FEBRUARY 2012 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 9

10 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JANUARY 2012

Merv was 63, the same age his father had been when he died of a heart attack. Merv acknowledged his genetics but he was far from the type of person you would think would drop dead from a diseased heart. The youngest of 7 children from Shipman, Merv was athletic and a coach at the high school for six years before becoming the director of the Waynesboro YMCA. Aside from developing a heart flutter some years ago, the man was in great health. “I had no symptoms leading up to this at all,” Merv said from the living room of his home. “It was a sunny afternoon. I was outside putting water in the pool. All of a sudden I started to sweat profusely and I knew something was wrong.” That’s when he went inside and yelled for Kay, who thankfully was within ear shot. After punching a beat back into his heart, Merv monetarily came to and told her “I’m okay.” But that’s when his memory of that day ended. As medical personnel hovered over him, Merv slipped into a monthlong coma. So long, June 2011. “We’re just out of options and there’s nothing else we can do.” That’s what doctors were telling Kay at Augusta Medical Center. After a surgery for three stints that should have taken half an hour – Merv was under the knife for at least 4 – doctors could not get him stable. They shocked his heart seven times. At one point, Merv’s body was hooked up to at least 15 different tubes and wires, tethering him to his room, unable to make the trip to the cardiac unit at the University of Virginia. “Tuesday night, the docs were talking about amputation,” Kay said, referring to the lack of blood flow to his lower

extremities that was turning his feet blue. The scientific reality was that Merv Wooten was going to die and make Kay a widow. And nothing short of a miracle would keep that from happening. Merv’s room began filling up with people and prayers. Remembering none of this, Merv believes the love surrounding him had everything to do with the reason why he is still alive. “I’ve been a Christian all my life but this taught me the power of prayer,” Merv said. “I had never believed in it strongly before. For some reason, I started to come around.” Merv’s failed heart began finding its rhythm again. On Wednesday, doctors were able to move him to UVa where he got a TandemHeart, a pump which functions as a heart outside of the body. A few days later, Merv got an LVAD, an implant that works as a bionic heart. It was an eight hour surgery and doctors had trouble stopping the bleeding. But “for every little bump, a miracle happened,” Merv said. Following his surgery for the LVAD, Merv was able to go home and begin his recovery. He had been on the heart transplant list for several weeks when the phone rang. Once again, it was a Sunday afternoon, when the voice of a woman delivered these words:

Merv Wooten of Shipman and his wife, Kay, of Beech Grove, were high school sweethearts and have been married 40 years. Though they live in Waynesboro, the family has a cabin on some land in Shipman where they like to gather.

“We have a heart for you.” continued on page 13

Welcoming the Winter Wonderland A gleaming blanket of snow is beautiful, but how can I temper its harsh glare? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful winter views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen significant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year. 3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your brilliant winter views. For those of you without blinds, I can take care of everything that fades, not just your furniture. You can soak in the views of freshly fallen snow, without having to squint at the glare it creates or bake in the heat. For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.

Myth vs. Reality 3M™ Window Films for your home are so amazing I often wonder why they’re not in most homes. Below, I dispel some of the myths you may have heard: MYTH: Window tinting will make my windows or room dark, and ruin my views. REALITY: I perform free consultations and I will apply a variety of film samples on your windows. I will label them and explain to you how they perform. I guarantee that there will be at least one sample that provides a more stunning view than your current windows and will still let in a tremendous amount of sunlight. MYTH: Window tinting will bubble, peel, and distort. REALITY: 3M™ is one of the most reputable and innovative companies in the world, and we use their window films. They do not bubble, peel, or become distorted. They back their window film with a lifetime warranty. MYTH: Nothing can really protect the interior of my home except for shadles or blinds. REALITY: Window tinting is the solution! Knowledge is power, power is change.

continued from page 11 The trip over Afton Mountain to Charlottesville was perhaps Merv and Kay’s most emotional ride yet. “Somebody just died and I’m going to live,” Merv thought. “I had a hard time dealing with that.” But his brother’s words put him at ease: “If that person didn’t want you to have that heart, he wouldn’t have been a donor.” “It’s so hard to put your mind around it,” Merv recalls. “You’re going to have someone else’s heart and you’re going to go through all of this and you don’t know what’s going to happen.” There was the very real possibility that despite the prayers and the medical care, Merv’s body would not like the new organ. But if there’s one thing Merv and Kay had learned, there wasn’t a darned thing they could do about it. “I think God’s been in control of this all along. You’re never in charge anyway,” Merv said. “Every little thing that happened along the way happened because God’s hand was on it.” As the nurses prepped him for surgery, they asked him what kind of music he liked, lest the surgeon cut open his body to the thumping beats of gangsta rap. Merv told them he liked Motown and oldies. They settled on Frank Sinatra.

This poster, put together by his granddaughters, followed Merv room to room as doctors at Augusta Medical Center and the UVa Medical Center worked to fit Merv with first, a bionic heart, and finally, a transplant. Merv says he is grateful for the care and compassion he received from the teams at both hospitals, notably Dr. Bergin, Dr. Kennedy, Dr. Kern, Dr. Kamath and their support staff. He’s also grateful to his church family at First Baptist in Waynesboro.

It’s winter and Merv has reached a milestone his father never met: turning 64. Though the family sold the home place some years back, Merv and his siblings own land in Shipman where he has built a cabin, a family gathering place. During his time in the hospital, Kay – who grew up in Beech Grove – insisted Merv was not through being a grandfather. “You’re going to walk out of this hospital,” she would tell him. “You’ve got two granddaughters to take care of.” The cabin, in the middle of nowhere and away from city

lights, is showered at night with the twinkle of millions of stars. Merv says it’s a place that brings him peace, a silence that might only be broken by the voice of a grandchild. “Granddaddy, where’d you get your new heart?” “Well, Zoe, I’ll have to explain that to you some time.” “I know where you got it. God gave it to you.” “And that just broke me up,” Merv said, losing a tear. With Kay at his side, Merv’s heart is in the right place. NCL

THE BIG, BIG, BENNIE-FIT

The Big, Big, Bennie-Fit drew a standing room only crowd, featuring performers such as Jimmy Fortune (above, standing), local roots duo Jan Smith & Jeff Vogelgesang, and Gladstones w/Terri Allard & special guests. Bennie (above, seated) had racked up some mighty serious medical bills and this concert was organized to help him pay them. A guitar signed by The Statler Brothers was an auction item; bid on by Kim Rath of Afton, it now hangs at her husband’s pub, The Blue Toad.

A Mountain Man is Laid to Rest STORY by LYNN COFFEY His given name was Safard Cliel Taylor but was known as “Sonny” by family and friends his entire life. Sonny was born on the 4th of July, 1942, the eldest son of Orcie and Gladys Coffey Taylor who lived in the small hamlet of White Rock in Nelson County, Virginia. Their cabin sat on a small bluff overlooking the Tye River, next to the old White Rock School and Church that served the population for generations. Like many mountain families, the Taylor’s left the steep rugged land where their homeplace was located in the early 1950s and moved to Stuarts Draft where there were more opportunities for their three sons; Sonny, Butch and Don. True to his mountain heritage, Sonny loved the outdoors and made his life’s work in both the construction and logging trades. Sonny worked with Everett Allen and his brother Don Taylor for a time but logged with William Henry Coffey for twenty-nine years before retiring in 1996. Like many of the men raised up in a rural atmosphere, Sonny loved the sport of hunting, heading for the woods in season to hunt bear, deer, and turkey. For forty-one years, Sonny was married to the love of his life, Mary “Sissy” Dameron Taylor and although they were never blessed with children of their own, they were a magnet for the many nieces and nephews

on both sides of the family. Their cozy home was located about halfway between Stuarts Draft and Sherando and the Taylor’s warmly welcomed everyone who came to their door, especially when Sonny began having some serious health problems and was not able to get out as much. On December 10th, 2011, Sonny passed away at sixty-nine years of age, leaving an empty spot in everyone’s heart who knew him. When the arrangements were made, my husband Billy had the honor of preaching his funeral which was held on Tuesday, December 13th. Sonny’s family made sure his service was as personal as the man that was being laid to rest. From the plain oak casket with a spray of daisies laying across the top to the front of the memorial card which pictured a drawing of his early homeplace, done by his nieces, Monica Humphries and Tonya Liptrap. On the inside, a beautiful poem entitled “Going Home” written by Sissy, captured Sonny’s thoughts in words that only a loving wife could know. Three songs were played in the service; Alan Jackson’s “Stroll Across Heaven”, “Threaten Me With Heaven” by Vince Gill and an old Charlie Waller favorite, “Let Me Fly Low”. The words in the last song talk about laying daisies on the grave of a loved one and the most poignant moment of the funeral was when Sissy stood and tucked a handful of daisies into the spray of flowers lying across her husband’s casket. As the service concluded, everyone was asked outside as a single white dove was released. We watched as the bird took to the air, instinctively flying homeward, signifying the spirit’s leaving earth and winging its way to heaven. As we began to leave, the hearse turned left and I realized the funeral procession would be driving across Campbell’s Mountain Road. This narrow gravel road built by the CCC Boys in the 1930s is one of the last of its kind and the connecting road from Tyro to Love. It is just wide enough for two vehicles to pass if one pulls over to the side. I wondered how a 28-car funeral procession was going to fare going down if there happened to be a vehicle coming up. When we began the accent to Love, however, I noticed Dee Terrell standing at attention at the entrance to Paige Hollow, radio in hand. It was then I realized the bear hunters were radioing ahead to the other men stationed at the Gum Tree and the bottom of Campbell’s Mountain, holding traffic until we passed. We wound our way on the curvy road up to the White Rock Cemetery, not far from the place Sonny was born. Homeward, just like the dove. Amid the majestic hemlock and tall pines that tower above the old graveyard and the water-song of the Tye River running below, generations of mountain people lay sleeping here. It is a reverent place where men who have Nelson County ties still dig graves by hand and lower caskets into the ground with ropes. When questioned why they do it the old way, the answer always evokes an emotional response with no words needed; it is an understood sacred rite of the Blue Ridge natives. A final loving gesture to an earlier way of life, honoring the people who lived it. And so it was here that Sonny Taylor’s casket was carried; up the steep hill by those who loved him and gently lowered into the earth alongside his parents and grandparents, awaiting the day they will be reunited. As we turned to leave, a sudden breeze swept through the pine boughs, whispering a closing benediction.... “Rest in sweet peace, Sonny; rest in sweet peace”. NCL

The folks at the Virginia Distillery Company just north of Lovingston at Eades Hollow are one step closer to making single malt whisky now that these mammoth copper stills have been installed. They sit on steel frames built by a company that specializes in roller coaster construction. Advance casks of the single malt batch will be available for purchase this fall while the rest of it will be set aside to age for at least four years.

slopeside [70+] STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by PAUL PURPURA

Annie Jackson still has the bamboo ski poles of her mother’s that she learned to ski with back at the University of Colorado in Boulder. She remembers taking her mother’s old skis – wooden ones with no edges – out on the slopes with her sorority sisters and zig sagging across the mountain. “I’d go across, plop down, get up, go back,” she remembers. But eventually the 76-year-old retired preschool teacher got good enough to enjoy the sport and, after a short hiatus, picked it back up while chaperoning her children on ski trips from their D.C. home. When she and her husband bought a condo at Wintergreen, she decided it was time to take it to the next level and she approached the Resort about becoming an instructor. Today she teaches every Saturday and Sunday during ski season. Her retirement, which started with a month-long ski trip to Europe, is not a quiet one, that’s for sure, said Annie, who substitute teaches during the week in Northern Virginia. “Not everyone that retires thinks about being less active,” she said. “They just think about doing things different.”

Bob Minard Home: Stoney Creek Age: “70-10”

When Bob Minard was 23, some college friends loaned him a pair of WWII-era, white, wooden skis from the 10th Mountain Division. They told him that they were going skiing and that he was coming along. These days, Bob’s skis are a bit better – usually the newest and best – and he has a great reason: he has to know what he’s selling. As a United Airlines sales agent in the mid-1900s, Bob got to travel to the ski gateways: Denver, Boise, Reno, etc. and one day got offered a part time job with the then-new big ski shop in D.C., Ski Chalet. From there, he landed (following his son and daughter-in-law), postretirement, at Wintergreen. “And then I found a ski shop,” he said, matter-of-factly. He said he still loves skiing, which he does two or three times a week, and working in a ski shop at the age of “70-10” (not 80) is the people. “They tend to be intelligent, friendly, all the things you could say are positive things,” he said. “It’s very stimulating to talk to them… the mix of people make it a lot of fun and interesting.” Not only that, but selling people skis and boots gives him a bit of an ego boost. “Fitting boots is not like you do in a shoe store,” he said. “It takes a little bit of knowledge to convince people that this is the right fit for them. I relish in the fact that I make the customer satisfied and [love] when they come back and say it’s a great fit.”

Wouldn’t you love to burn your mortgage?

By Julia Rogers Julia Rogers is a licensed CPA residing in Nelson County Let’s Burn that Mortgage! Maybe you remember the television scenes with Archie and Edith Bunker throwing a Burn the Mortgage party. The concept of living in the same home long enough to be able to pay off your mortgage ended somewhere after the legendary happy days of the late 50’s and early 60’s. Ask anyone under 50 today about paying off their mortgage, and they will likely look at you as if you have two heads. One of the benefits of our current recession is that many of us are looking back at what worked in the past. What’s old is new again. Eating in has become fashionable, reusing is the rage, and who would want to be seen in the grocery store without their reusable grocery bags? Paying off the mortgage was traditionally a prerequisite to retirement in our country – a concept that spread across all levels of society. It’s the best way to provide security for your retirement years. So, let’s reconsider how we can burn that mortgage.

One simple method is to add some principal to your monthly mortgage payment. While this takes some discipline, the results can be rewarding. For example, adding $100 a month to your payments on a 30-year mortgage of $150,000 will pay off your loan about 6 or 7 years earlier. If you choose this method, make sure the bank designates the extra money to reduce principal and not just your next monthly payment. Another method is to make biweekly mortgage payments. Most of us receive biweekly paychecks, so this method makes sense. You will need to have your mortgage company arrange this for you. The advantage to this method is that if you choose a direct payment option, the discipline is already established for you. This method will also reduce your 30-year loan by about 6 years. If your mortgage rate is 5 percent or more, this is the perfect time to refinance. Using today’s lower rates, it’s quite likely that you can reduce your longer mortgage life to a 15-

year loan at a similar or only slightly higher monthly payment. Again, this option provides a built-in discipline for you. Finally, if you were required to pay for private mortgage insurance (known as PMI) when you arranged your current mortgage, ask your mortgage company how you can end these payments. Few homeowners ever benefit from this coverage and you can use the savings to purchase cheaper term life insurance to provide for your family’s needs or to pay additional principal. PMI is only required if your debt is more than 80 percent of the value of your home. If your home’s value has risen or if you have paid off a chunk of your mortgage, you might be able to eliminate the PMI. So let’s imagine the plans for that party – will it be a special dinner with your spouse or a big bash with the neighbors? Email me at JRogers@R-CPA.net with your ideas – the best answer wins our Mortgage Burning Party Kit!

Changes in real estate tax assessment values for Nelson County

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

The bestselling book Who moved my cheese? has helped millions, including me, deal with change. No one likes change, and that may be why the reassessment has generated such a buzz around the community. In 2008, the honey pot was stirred when tax values increased dramatically. And surprisingly enough, it may have been stirred once again with the 2012 release of property tax assessment values… which actually dropped in many instances. My daughter has this saying, “Cool your jets, Turbo!” This may be an opportune time for all of us property owners to pause and better understand how to interpret and deal with the change. A Moving Target Property values fluctuate over time. While assessments are currently occurring every 4 years, the process is almost continual. With so many properties to evaluate, the process may begin 18 months before the actual values are released. By

the time the 2008 assessment figures were released the market had started the downward trend, but the data was collected during a high point in the market. For the 2012 assessment, the values were collected at what we hope “was” the low point of our market. Assessment = Appraisal or true market value? No! A tax assessment value does NOT equal an appraised value or an estimated sales price. While the assessors use a process/formula to arrive at an assessed value, it does not involve the same level of detail as an appraisal. For example, appraisers will enter a home and evaluate it based on attributes that it may or may not have in comparison to other homes that have recently sold in the area. Tax assessors do not enter the home – even when invited in; I tried. As previously established they are also not operating on the most current sales data. If you plan to sell, assessed value does not equal the expected sales price. If you are looking to make a purchase (or refinance), rest assured that

Chocolates?

the appraised value is of much greater importance. Buying or selling, rely on your appraiser or real estate professional to provide price point data. For example, as an agent I will track tax assessment values for sold properties to achieve a trending ratio which can be of much greater value than the tax assessment value alone. Disputes There was a short window of time that residents could dispute their tax assessments. If you missed that window of opportunity, or if you were unsatisfied with the resolution of your initial dispute meeting, you can go before the Board of Equalization. This Board should be established and ready to meet with property owners at the courthouse from an estimated February thru April timeframe. Tax rate The Board of Supervisors sets the tax rate to support the general operating budget of the county. What will happen with the rate? I may not be a rocket scientist, but my somewhat educated guess is that it will increase.

Flowers?

Just because property values fell, it doesn’t mean the budgetary needs of the county fell too. As you will recall in 2008, the assessment values increased and the tax rate decreased. The 2008 -2011 rate was .55 cent per hundred of value. The 2012 rate will most likely be announced by April 1. Contact the county administrator at 434-263-7000 for a public hearing schedule. Questions? Contact the Commissioner of Revenue office at 434-2637070. If you feel the current tax assessment value for your property is too low, or too high, speak up before it is too late!

Cure for the Winter Blues Hands down, the us(or Lenten Rose) is the number one shade perennial on the marketplace. The reasons are simple; no other perennial can boast of 3+ months of color starting as early as late December while remaining easy to grow, deer proof, drought tolerant, cold tolerant (Zone 3-8) and shade loving. Knowing these facts, breeders and nurseryman around the globe have been relentlessly working to tap into this growing market with hybrids that boast new colors, longer bloom times, interesting foliage, longer and stronger stems and double bracts (or blooms). Helleboresare shade perennials with deep, thick roots that extend as deep as the plant is tall. Along with almost leather-like foliage, these attributes enable an established plant to weather harsh winters and hot, dry summers. Although not considered xerophytes (a plant that can withstand practically no water aka Joshua tree), I have found that once my plants are established in a rich, compost based soil, they are maintenance free regarding the mid-summer hose dragging ritual. Trequire one pruning in mid-winter once the new foliage and blooms begin to emerge from the center of the plant. Once you notice this new, prune away ALL of last years foliage. This foliage will appear large, necrotic (brown on the edges) and typically close to the ground. However, pruning this foliage in the fall is a serious offense from which a hellebore may never recover. Here’s why; the old foliage, even in early winter, is like a syringe removing excess water from the plant. If this ‘surface area’ is removed the plant is then left at the mercy of Mother Nature to give it exactly the amount of water that it needs – no more, or it ‘drowns’ in winter snows and rains, so make sure to wait until you see the year’s

new growth. After this pruning, your maintenance is done and the show begins! Look for these new plants in ‘series’ that breeders have lumped together. We reference head height on these new series to help you understand if the bloom is high off the foliage or low and how the head of the flower is held (up, down). Our favorites start with the most inexpensive, the ‘Lady’ series. These are available as ‘Red’, ‘White Spotted’, ‘Metallic Blue’, ‘White’, ‘Pink’ and one or two more. The ‘Lady’ series boasts single blooms on medium stems. The ‘Gold Collection’s blooms are with high upright heads but most importantly this series blooms in its first year unlike the others which can take 2 to 3 years to really get blooming. Some of the more extravagant (and more expensive – but worth it) series are the ‘Winter Thrillers’ (single, medium upright heads) and finally the ‘Holy Grail’ of hellebore the ‘Winter Gems’ which are double blooming, medium to high heads. Obviously the double blooms are some of the most sought after varieties available which also makes them more expensive. Expect to pay for a 3 quart item around $25-30 for these while paying around $15-20 for the singles. Fertility is typically medium and we use a compost based fertilizer. Once the plants are established, we spread chicken litter around them in late winter, however even with no fertilizer, I have seen awesome color from them. Helleboresmake great cut flowers that cut and hold well for some added color inside the home in later winter and early spring. And if you want to make more from your large hellebore that is outgrowing its space (is that possible?), you can divide them in mid-October. Bottom line, if you don’t have Hellebore in your garden, re-read this article…

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, What can I do to get my blood pressure down short of taking medications? Well, if you are a marathon runner who has no body fat, eats no salt, doesn’t smoke or drink, and still has high blood pressure, I believe you are out of luck-- you don’t have any bad habits to change! But for most folks with hypertension, there is certainly room for lifestyle changes to get that pressure down. High blood pressure is defined as 140/90 mmHg or greater for most people. Lower is better for all and especially for those with other health problems. We doctors get all upset about hypertension because it is a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and plenty of other problems. Basically, if your pressure is up your heart and blood vessels have to work too hard to pump blood. So, if you do have high pressure, please talk with your doctor about it. Back to the original question, there is a lot that most people can do to get their pressure down. First of all,

stop smoking. If you are overweight, losing even as little as 10% of your weight can help. Dropping your weight to a normal amount for your height can lower pressure by 5 to 20 mmHg or more! Eating a diet full of fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products and lowering the amount of saturated fats in the diet can lower pressure by 8 to 14 mmHg, while limiting your salt intake to less than 2.4g/day can take off another 2 to 8. Alcohol should be limited to two or fewer drinks per day for men and one or less for women to knock off about 4 mmHg. And, my favorite for last: EXERCISE! A brisk walk for 30 minutes most days of the week is enough to drop the blood pressure by up to 10 mmHg. Add all of that up and that’s a lot of blood pressure reduction without medicine! theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Physical Therapy

Shoe Wear and Tear It is quite common to wear shoes until the soles are worn thin. It is important to get your money’s worth as the cost of exercise shoes is quite expensive. I am frugal and if it were any other piece of clothing, I would agree whole heartedly. I have T shirts that are fifteen years old and soft jeans with holes in them that are really comfortable. But I don’t skimp on shoes. And you shouldn’t either. Good shoes are the first line of joint protection for your ankles, knee, hips and lower back. The shoe provides shock absorption each time you take a step to relieve joint stress. We generally take about 10,000 steps a day. So it is not a surprise that you have foot pain at the end of the day after wearing a flimsy unsupportive shoe. Before jumping back into your exercise routine this New Year: Invest in a good exercise shoe! It should have a firm heel region, adequate arch support and room to wiggle your toes. If it doesn’t fit well in the store, don’t buy it. Always try on shoes. Shoe companies vary their

styles each year and the shoe style you bought last year will be changed ever so slightly so it may not fit the same. If you find a style that fits you well, buy a couple pairs because that style may be different next year. Only wear your exercise shoes for exercise. Not for shopping, walking around the house or running errands. If you have foot deformities and need to wear an exercise style shoe, have a pair for walking about and then another pair for exercise. It keeps your exercise shoes lasting longer. If you are a regular runner or walker, replace your shoes frequently (every 4-6 months). The shoe may still look new but the shock absorption portion of the shoe has worn out. What to do with your old shoes? After they have been utilized as gardening shoes, try recycling them locally at the recycle center in Nelson County. Other ways to recycle are to send them to Soles4Souls (soles4souls.org) who donate the shoes to folks in need. Or check out recyclerunners.com or nikeuseashoe.com for other places to donate your shoes.

George McKinney Home: Stoney Creek Age: 80

One of the things George McKinney loves about skiing is that when you’re all dressed up in your winter finest, you don’t really know how old everyone is. Not that age really matters for this 80-year-old skier who started skiing in the 1940s in high school but then got out of the habit until retiring to Wintergreen at age 62. “I had very different equipment in those days, but it came back pretty quickly,” said George. “It was really easier than I thought.” Especially easier was using a ski lift instead of a tow rope like he used to, not to mention the technological advances in bindings and boots and skis. These days, George is upon the mountain two or three times a week – he’s trying to slow down a bit, you see – during ski season. “It’s so convenient,” said George, who lives in Stoney Creek. “I’ve got a locker there and its’ easy to go over, suit up, ski for two hours and come home for lunch.” George said he loves the view from the top of the mountain – the former Air Force pilot loves heights, but being part of nature and the camaraderie has him stuck to the sport. “Three of my friends are over 80,” he said. “One is turning 90 this year.” Skiing is not just for the young, no matter what anyone tells you.

Ralph Frink learned to ski with his three daughters when he was 42 years old when his work moved him to Connecticut and he spent 18 years there skiing. That was 32 years ago and Ralph said it’s never too late to learn, older first-timers might just consider a lesson or two before hitting the slopes. “People at all ages can [ski] really easily without being a fearful experience,” he said. “And I decided my last year of real work, which was in sales, that I would be a ski instructor in retirement, just so I could learn to ski better,” said Ralph. So after going to Killington School for Ski Instructors, he retired and moved to Stoney Creek in 2002 where the now-74-year-old still teaches a full-time load of ski classes. “I think I like skiing because I enjoy the freedom that it affords you,” said Ralph. “I love the speed that’s involved; the movement of it, it’s very rhythmical.” At a time when most of his peers might be considering a bit of a slower lifestyle, Ralph said he can’t quit skiing. “I’m afraid to stop,” he said. “If I stopped, I might fall apart.” NCL

While many guys his age are worried about jobs and college loans, Matt Steffanina is plotting his next (dance) move. STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

FEBRUARY 2012 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 33

continued from page 32

One day early this century (approximately 2002), back before YouTube and Vimeo and Netflix and even the iPod, Matt Steffanina and a buddy got bored. Luckily, the two then17-year-olds came across a break dancing video – a VHS tape – because that led to Matt’s dream and eventually his career.

If your hair isn’t becoming to you, you should be coming to us.

Break dancing led to hip hop and even though Matt wasn’t yet starting to think of dancing as a way to live his life and make money, friends eventually started him to teach classes – the first one was at the Rockfish Valley Community Center right in Afton. Matt, who moved from Washington, D.C. to Stoney Creek when he was in 7th grade (he eventually moved on to Charlottesville and currently lives in Los Angeles, CA), credits his homeschooled high school career for leading him to a somewhat non-traditional full-time job. “It gave me a lot of freedom to my schoolwork when I wanted and have the other time to get outside and be active,” said Matt, who wasn’t into dancing at the time, but was very into sports. “It really forced me to make my own decisions. I was around my friends a lot, but I never had any pressure from advice from anyone saying, ‘Don’t you want to be a doctor?’” Matt said that he was lucky, also, that his parents were so supportive of him – even when he left the business administration program at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) to pursue his dance career once he realized that business school didn’t excite him as much as he thought it would. “They never really pressured me to go to college or get a ‘secure’ job,” said Matt. “They always just said ‘Do what makes you happy.’ There was only the pressure I put on myself.” And Matt does put pressure on himself – not only to be a great dancer, but to be a great teacher. Teaching dance is actually a greater passion for Matt than being a dancer. Matt said that as much as he loves dancing, he is so passionate about teaching because when he was growing up, he never knew that a person like him could become a hip hop dancer. “I know how much I would have appreciated having somebody come to Charlottesville,” he said, noting that even though there are YouTube videos out there these days (including his) that teach young viewers how to groove, it’s not the same as having a teacher. He’s done commercials and music videos – some people may have heard of some of the artists he’s danced for: Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes and DJ Fiesta. He’s even been on primetime TV: So You Think You Can Dance and Tonight Show with Jay Leno. “But really, I’m trying to teach,” said Matt, explaining that before a person can be taken seriously as a hip hop dance instructor, he needs to have a pretty impressive resume. “So that’s what we’re doing right now, is trying to get some more performing experiences.” Matt and his girlfriend, Dana Borriello, travel all over the country, and even the world, teaching hip hop dance. From a recent trip to a studio in Germany, to Dana’s home turf in New York and New Jersey, to a tiny studio in Pennsylvania, and back home to Charlottesville, and Nelson, everywhere is a treat for the dancing duo. “When we go away, we teach from the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep, and when we get home, we feel like we’ve been on vacation together and not like we’ve been working,” said Matt who sincerely believes that a person should love what (s)he’s doing for work. “We’re really fortunate.” NCL

In between trips to New York, Germany and back to his home base of L.A., we caught up with dancer/choreographer Matt Steffanina at a hip hop class in Charlottesville. Homeschooled in Nellysford, Matt’s interest in break dancing and then hip hop, blossomed into a career.
