Peyton is not yet 2 and daddy has alread tricked her out in Mardi Gras beads. He may live to regert this in a few years. Meanwhile, on planet Boy, Adam’s interest in tractors has exploded. We were leaving the gym and headed to the Jeep when Adam bolted across the parking lot. That’s when mothers – of the gym rat variety or not – switch to turbo and chuck the green Kermit lunch box under the Jeep bumper, hoping to catch their offspring before they fall into the newly dug ditch for the sewer line. I must give Adam credit; he knew exactly where to stop. Planting his rear on the edge of a sidewalk under a tree, jabbing his blue lollipop in his mouth, he and I spent the next ten minutes tracking a glorious piece of yellow machinery. We could have been at a tennis match. The bulldozer went left. The bulldozer went right. The bulldozer went left. And it went right again. Game. Set. Match. The old people at the new senior living center will have some beautifully leveled walkways. Speaking of old people, one of the fine girls raised in this old house is now 94. Her name is Dolly, or at

least that’s what we call her. Actually, I don’t want to know her real name, if she even has one. Dolly is a great name, especially if you’re 94. She sent us a note the other day telling us she hoped to be alive when Adam takes his first ride down the bannister. Dolly, we own a video camera. If Adam were old enough to grant you the pleasure of sliding down the staircase, believe me, we would tape it for you. In the meantime, you’ll have to settle for little boys crawling down the staircase on their bellies. Or young girls showing off their Mardi Gras beads. Wines with character Consilience. There is a wine out in Santa Barbara, California bearing labels adorned with artwork and the name “Consilience.” Apparently, the word means the bridge between science and art and in the case of wine we can think of science as what occurs in the vineyard and art as what then happens in the hands of the winemaker. I’ll give a talented winemaker some credit even though, as a terroirist, I hold to the belief that “wine is made in the vineyard.” Yet when I looked up the word the O.E.D., it wasn’t there. Still, it’s a nice idea for there is a point in which science and spirit merge and the great masters and yogis have always known this. In their highest interpretations, philosophy and mathematics merge. Perhaps great science and great art are, in the end, the same—both striving to answer the same questions: Why are we here? What is life’s purpose? And how ultimately do we make sense of life and death? I have a friend in France who answers, flippantly… or perhaps not, that the answer lies in a good,

well-made bottle of wine. My own interpretation is that maybe the uncorking of that one, good bottle simply opens the door for discussions on the important questions. If so, below is your homework: Chidaine Vouvray, Les Argiles, 2009 - François Chidaine was, only a few years ago, considered one of the wine-makers to watch in the Loire. This assessment was based on his commitment to biodynamic farming and non-intervention wine-making style, as well as his excellent vineyard holdings in Montlouis, an obscure appellation to many Americans, and Vouvray, which is somewhat better known. Now the transition is complete and Chidaine is considered one of the great wine-makers in the Loire, selling out of every bottle he makes within just a few months of bottling. From Robert Parker: “Chidaine’s 2009 Vouvray Les Argiles leads with bittersweet iris perfume, and smells and tastes vividly of pineapple and lemon, with a strikingly vintageatypical sense of acidity that results largely from the predominance of cool, water-retentive soil, particu-

larly in the dominant L’Homme and Reugnieres vineyards but also from the fruit originating in Le Haut Lieu. Bright pineapple and lemon refresh on a palate of palpable density and penetrate in a finish both energizing and somehow cooling in both its refreshment and its suggestions of high-toned herbal essences, fresh cress, and wet stone. Peyton Coyner arrives at the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center on Stagebridge Road near Faber and begins loading pet carriers into a Ford van. He then drives to the Amherst County Animal Shelter where he and three female volunteers transfer the Nelson canines to a larger van and load carriers with 20 more dogs from several Central Virginia communities. Some are puppies, cute but quietly bewildered, some are fully grown, barking and whining. A St. Bernard, a pair of hounds, two border collies, a pit bull, a bunch of mixed breeds – all marked for euthanizing but for a network of animal lovers called Gateway Regional Rescue. This mission will end 19 hours later when Coyner arrives back at his home in Afton, having driven 800 miles through sleet and rain and traffic, tired but pleased that his journey to Harrisburg, Pa., and three different communities in New Jersey has resulted in the gift of life to 27 dogs. A retired design engineer at Hopeman Brothers, a ship-outfitting company, he does this once a month. He also makes a monthly two-day trip to Boston. Same mission.

“These animals are at our mercy,” he says during the first phase of the drive up I-81. “They’re facing a death sentence through no fault of their own. Anything I can do to save these lives, I think it’s necessary. It sure makes me feel good. There is no downside to it at all.” Except for the pit bull named Lillie that won’t hardly shut up throughout the entire 10 hours it takes to deliver her to the third stop at a shopping center in Burlington, N.J., where Sue Coculo and Lorraine Schreiber take her out of her carrier and load her, three puppies and another dog into their vans to take them to the Burlington County Animal Alliance where they will almost certainly be adopted. “They mostly sleep once we hit the highway,” Coyner says, but now and then there are some like Lillie who keep it up for a long, noisy time.

And there was the time the van, loaded with dogs, broke down in Lovingston. A wrecker was called. He loaded the van, still full of dogs, to take it up to Almost Home so they could be loaded into smaller vans. “The wrecker driver asked me how much I was being paid (to drive the dogs),” Coyner remembers. “ I told him all of us involved in this were unpaid volunteers. When we unloaded at the shelter he said there was no charge. I got him out of bed at 6:30 in the morning and he wouldn’t take any money.” That is the spirit Leah Jacobson of Stewartsville, N.J. was counting on when she joined with Martha Buckberger to create Gateway Regional Rescue back in 2006.


“And here we are, over 8,000 dogs later,” says Jacobson as dogs are unloaded at her Harvest Star Antique store in Stewartsville, N.J., to be picked up by still other unpaid volunteers. The dogs come not only from Central Virginia but from as far south as Mississippi. Jacobson coordinates the distribution of the animals. Buckberger, a Monroe resident, was working in 2006 as a volunteer bookkeeper for the Amherst Humane Society when they received an email from Jacobson saying her partner, Rick Johnston, an Amherst native, was willing to bring unwanted dogs up to New Jersey whenever he drove his

pick-up truck down to visit his family in Amherst. Jacobson had been a volunteer for a humane society in Jersey City and, after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, went down to the Gulf Coast and was inspired by the many people rescuing animals from that disaster. “We quickly outgrew our vehicles and Martha bought us the first mini-van and donated it to the cause,” Jacobson says. Like Nelson’s Humane Society, Amherst’s Society had a no-kill policy but needed somewhere to take unwanted dogs. Other communities in Central Virginia were in a similar situation. And so, Gateway Regional

Rescue, a non-profit venture, was born. Buckberger herself drove dogs to New Jersey every weekend for two-and-a-half years. She credits Jacobson and the many volunteers at each of the animal shelters for the success of the rescue project. Thanks to their efforts, the dogs from Central Virginia get a new lease on life in New Jersey and the Boston area where demand to adopt dogs is very strong. More people in those areas have their dogs spayed or neutered so bringing dogs up from the south, where spaying and neutering are not as common, results in a win-win situation. continued on page 13

Letting in the spring light The spring color palette is breathtaking, but how can I keep the bright colors in my house from fading? continued from page 11 Coyner’s greatest concern is breaking down or getting stuck in traffic for a long time with 25 or more dogs with a need to poop. “Cleaning out cages is not one of the joys of this mission,” he admits. “If we broke down – we have Triple-A – but we’d have to rent something big or have to call the destination and have them send small vans to pick up the dogs.” And there is the tedium of long drives without any company but the dogs. He makes up song parodies to keep himself alert. But whatever the tribulations, he speaks wonderingly of the market for dogs in New Jersey. “It’s incredible. People are fighting over dogs.” He remembers taking some puppies to a PetSmart that opened at 8 a.m. “There was a parade of 30 people following the shopping carts carrying the dogs. By 8:15 people were fighting over adopting them. You never see that down here in Nelson County.” “If half the dogs we took (up north) were still running around Nelson County it would be a different place,” Coyner says. The animal control officers paid by the county to round up strays would be

The rescue mission is not without its costs. While the agencies in New Jersey send back dog food and items for the humane society thrift shops in Nelson and Amherst to help support the operation, Coyner points out gasoline costs $180 per trip, replacing tires can be upwards of $800 and insurance on the drivers and vans is $3,000 a year. The rescue project gets $50 per animal from the receiving agencies.

And it costs $365,000 a year, all of it from donations and fund raisers, to support the operation of the Almost Home Adoption Center in Nelson, just one of the area’s animal shelters dedicated to saving dogs from euthanasia. According to Humane Society President Bette Graham, at any given time Almost Home has up to 40 dogs, most of which are not adopted locally. “Peyton took seven dogs last week, but 10 came in from animal control,” Graham says. “We have to move some out.” There are other Nelsonians driving – Fonda and Donald Bell, Rusty Graybill, Art Graham, and several from Amherst. There is at least one trip a week, nearly every week. It is a thankless task, giving up entire days, twice a month, to save animals who will never tell you they appreciate your efforts. But, says Coyner, “It warms your heart to see the dogs go into a home. They wag their tales, their eyes sparkle.” And when he receives a nuzzle and a wag of the tail from the St. Bernard pup as he hands it over to its new owner at the first stop in Harrisonburg, it is all the thanks he needs. Mountain Landmarks, Part I STORY by LYNN COFFEY

Here in the Blue Ridge there are certain places the mountain people all know, especially the bear hunters. These local landmarks are so familiar that just the name evokes memories for those who roam the ancient ridges. I’ve compiled a list of the most popular ones that I know well and a few given to me by George Allen who grew up in the mountains of Nelson County. For newcomers in the area they will be something new and different to read about even without knowing the exact location. But for those raised up here, each place is sure to bring a smile of remembrance and many memories of years past. Here is a partial list of those we know best. The “HOT HOLE”: This natural opening in the rocks is at Bald Mountain on the way to Green Pond, slightly west of where the old fire tower was located. It is a crack in the earth where cool air seeps out and is a welcome respite in the hot summer months for anyone hiking the trail. In the winter the temperature of the air coming out of the hole remains the same (about 55 degrees) and it becomes the place bear hunters can warm their hands while listening for the dogs. The crevice is large enough for a person to squeeze into but not big enough to fall through or repel down to explore what must be an underground cave. “GREEN POND”: This natural bog on the top of Bald Mountain is abundant in cranberries as well as blueberries (or “huckleberries” as some call them). Although the blueberries grow wild, the cranberries were first introduced by Doctor Dodge of Stuarts Draft and they continue to thrive there. “BALCONY ROCKS”: This large outcropping of rocks is located on the east side of the Blue Ridge Parkway down Campbell’s Mountain Road, across from the GUM TREE. Locals put the emphasis on the last syllable of the word pronouncing it Bal-CONEY. The steep rock formation faces the Tye River Valley below and the view of that area is commanding. In the early 1900s, school children and the teachers from the Snead and Ivy Hill Schools walked to the rocks for a picnic when school was over for the summer. The “RED ROCK”: Located at the foot of Love, the large flat rock on the right side of the road coming up the mountain has always been painted fluorescent red by people who own land back in Paige Holler who host get-togethers and use the rock as a marker, letting folks know where to turn in.

Balcony Rocks is on the east side of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Campbell’s Mountain Road.

“ETT’S SAG”: Located about milepost 18-1/2 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, this long flat stretch of land (called a sag) was named for Mary Etta Bryant Coffey, wife of Wesley “Rob” Coffey. Rob built a new house between where Otis Fitzgerald (on the east side of the road) and William Henry Phillips (on the west side of the road) lived. Rob Coffey’s parents were Edmund and Martha Snead Coffey. Rob was the half-brother to Tom (Johnny Coffey’s father). Mary Etta’s parents were Jack and Neacy Coffey Bryant. Neacy was Eli Coffey’s sister. Eli was the father of Hercy Coffey who ran a store, mill and sawmill on the North fork of the Tye River at White Rock. Neacy Coffey’s parents were Dave and Mary Jane Fitzgerald Coffey. Rob and Mary Etta were Vernice Coffey’s parents. Vernice married Fred Coffey, son of Cyrus and Eliza Coffey. Fred and Vernice’s children were Leland and Ray Coffey. Although most of these names will be unfamiliar to those reading this column, for the mountain people of White Rock, Chicken Holler, and Love, this genealogy is sure to bring back memories of the families who lived here generations ago. Three years ago, there were teachers at Rockfish River Elementary School who had never run before. Today, some of those same teachers are training for half marathons. Richard Averitt, RRES PTO parents and co-chair of the Nelson County 5K and Fun Run & Health Fair at RRES, attributes some of that inspiration to the community-focused 5K that he, Lisa Stewart, and other members of the RRES PTO have been organizing for three years now. What started out as a way to raise money to improve the elementary school’s playground has grown into something much bigger. “We wanted to create a fundraiser that was also a community event,” said Richard, who has a 6th grade son at Nelson Middle School and a 3rd grade daughter at RRES. “We’re raising funds while building commitment and community.” In addition to bringing the community together for a day of fun, Richard said a fundraiser like this 5K helps kids and adults alike to get excited about being outside and being active. “I know they talk about it and get excited about this event – I’ve heard kids talking about how they’re old enough for the 5K this year or how they think they can run faster than a friend,” he said. “There’s a great enthusiasm and it’s a good life experience.” NCL

How should you organize your new business?

Alphabet Soup At least once a month, I have a meeting with someone that is thinking about starting a small business. One of the first questions is whether they should organize in some special way. Everyone has heard the buzz about LLCs, S Corporations, and other entities. For the new business owner, this all sounds like a bowl of alphabet soup. What is the right path to choose? As with any question, the correct answer is…it depends. It depends upon the complexity of the business, the number of employees, and the type of products or services offered. If you have no or few employees, the easiest form of entity is simply that of a sole proprietorship. With this form of entity, the net income is reported with your annual Form 1040 on Schedule C. There are no additional tax forms to file to report the net income and there are no legal fees involved to form or maintain the entity. If the business has more than one owner or has multiple employees, it is wise to create a legal entity. For

most small businesses, this legal entity should be either an LLC or an S Corporation. LLCs and S Corps have much in common. Both types of entities are considered corporations under state law; therefore, owners are typically not personally responsible for business debts or certain damages, except to the extent of their investment. Both are separate entities created by a filing with the State Corporation Commission and are subject to filing annual reports and fees with the SCC. An attorney should be consulted to prepare documents that provide the operating rules for the entity. This document is generally referred to as an Operating Agreement (for LLCs) or as the Corporate Bylaws (for S Corps). It clarifies the ownership percentages and allocation of profits and losses to owners. The agreement should also provide for the transfer of ownership interests in the event of a dispute, death, or disability. Both LLCs and S Corps are considered pass-through entities for tax purposes. The entity does not pay

tax on its net income; instead, the net income of the business flows through to the owners on a Form K-1. If the entity incurs operating losses, the owners may benefit by deducting those losses against other income. The primary operating difference between the two entities is the treatment of compensation for the owners. S Corps should determine reasonable compensation for the services of its shareholders, which should be paid and reported as wages on Form W- 2. Any earnings of the business in excess of this amount are considered a dividend distribution. By contrast, all of the earnings of an LLC are considered earned income and reported as self-employment income on Form K-1. For very profitable operations, this may result in higher taxes for the members than is desirable. Starting a new business is much like starting the first day of kindergarten – being prepared with the best type of organization for your business ownership and structure will give you the best start.

While there may be a few glimmers of hope in the local real estate market, Nelson County remains in a buyer’s market. With just over 300 residential properties for sale countywide, there is a need for buyers, to carefully weed through choices, and sellers to position their property to stand out in the competition. Statistical findings from the 2011 National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers may help market participants better understand one another and develop more customer centric approaches to buying and selling. Here are the report highlights: Characteristics of Home Buyers; 78% of recent home buyers said their home is a good investment, and 45 percent believe it’s better than stocks; 37% of all home buyers were first-time buyers, a drop from 50% in 2010; the typical home buyer was 45 years old, compared to 39 years old in 2010; 64% of recent buyers were

married couples - this is the highest share since 2001; 18% of recent home buyers were single females - the lowest share since 2004; the median household income of buyers was $80,900; first-time buyers plan to stay in the home for 10 years and repeat buyers plan to hold their property for 15 years. Characteristics of Homes Purchased; the typical home purchased was 1,900 sq ft and has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms; 77% of buyers purchased a detached single-family home; 17% purchased a condo or townhouse; new homes accounted for 16% of sales; the main factors influencing location choice were quality of neighborhood, convenience to job, and overall affordability of homes. The Home Search Process; 88% of home buyers used the Internet; buyers searched an average of 12 weeks and viewed 12 homes; more than half of buyers considered

An Unorthodox ‘Lifting of the Skirt’ With just these 6 words, I just increased my readership by about 50%! However, unfortunately for those new readers, an unorthodox ‘lifting of the skirt’ in the green industry refers to pruning up trees and shrubs (the skirt). I am going to highlight some plants that work well with a ‘lifting of the skirt’, some that are not typically limbed up. Here is how it works; you see this cute little plant in the garden center that you just have to buy. The fine print says 10 feet but hey, it is a really ‘cute’ plant and you have the perfect spot picked out. Years pass by and now that cute plant is a mature shrub that overwhelms both the other species that are close to it AND the space it was intended for. A ‘not-so-typical’ approach would be to limb up the plant (not just trees) and use it as a unique upright element to the landscape. Let’s get into some of my favorites. The process on all that follow is just to start at the bottom of the plant and limb up to the desired height – trying to leave at least 1/3 of the plant or so as the new canopy (otherwise you’re left with some strange umbrella-looking plant). Obviously Yellow is a strong color in the landscape, often times muted by orange or green or even complimented by purple to blue shades. An evergreen yellow shrub can be overwhelming in small spaces (aka Chamaecyparis ‘Gold Mop’). At a young age, this plant’s bright yellow stringy foliage is a nice, easily controlled statement in the landscape. However, upon maturing at over 5 feet tall (and wide), some serious garden cleaning may be in order. Once limbed up, replant around the removed skirt with perennials that

will help to mute this hard color – coneflower, green liriope (en masse), daisies, phlox divaricata and other sun loving species. Sambucus ‘Black Lace’ is another plant that I like limbed up, however you have to start the pruning early in its life so it grows like a tree instead of a shrub. This plant resembles a dark leafed Japanese maple and in the summer it is adorned with pink flowers atop this dark foliage. Once the lower limbs are cut, replant with light colored perennials like variegated liriope (en masse), coneflower, garden phlox, black-eyed susan, etc. Moving into an established lawn and seeing towering American boxwood near patios is a recipe for a quick phone call for a contractor to completely remove them. However, although they do not have the nicest bark once limbed up, they still offer privacy to your seating area. Once limbed up, think drought loving shade species like pachysandra, hellebore (need help establishing), Virginia blue bells, variegated Solomon’s seal, etc. Sparkleberry (Ilex ‘Winterberry), a cousin to the lower growing Winterberry, has wonderful dime-sized red berries in late fall – perfect timing for those Christmas decorations. Growing as a large shrub or even small tree (to 10 feet), space around the landscape can become an issue. Furthermore, they add zero to the landscape until they actually set fruit and start to turn red. But with a pair of pruners and a little bit cutting this plant comfortably fits into smaller landscapes. As with all plants moderation is the key – don’t go out and limb up everything and be thoughtful to size when picking out new additions to your landscape.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I heard about something called metabolic syndrome. What is this? A lot of people have never heard of metabolic syndrome, also known as Syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome, but it is a surprisingly common condition. It is not a disease, but a group of risk factors that occur together and increase the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Metabolic syndrome is becoming more and more common in the US. Abdominal obesity and insulin resistance are the 2 most important risk factors. Abdominal obesity is when there is extra weight in the middle of the body – when someone is ‘apple shaped.’ Insulin resistance is when the body cannot use insulin effectively causing blood sugar and blood fat levels to rise. Metabolic syndrome is present when someone has 3 or more of the following signs: elevated fasting blood sugar, elevated blood pressure, a large waist circumference, low HDL (or good) cholesterol and elevated triglycerides. The goal of treating metabolic syndrome is to prevent the development of diabetes and decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke. The most

important treatments are weight loss and exercise. Losing about 10% of body weight makes a big difference. Regular aerobic exercise for 30 minutes most days of the week will help decrease your risk of complications. Blood pressure and cholesterol should be controlled by healthy food choices, aerobic exercise, weight loss and, if needed, medications. Metabolic syndrome is a common and serious condition that many people do not realize that they have. Its prevention and treatment are really the same thing – daily aerobic exercise, healthy food choices and maintaining a healthy body weight. Have your fasting glucose and cholesterol levels checked. Develop healthy habits and treat your blood pressure and cholesterol if needed. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about metabolic syndrome. Isolating the Abs Perhaps, “finding” the abs should be the title. The elusive six pack. So many jokes about once having a six pack or washer board type abdominals. Most of us are looking for ways to tone the abdominals and lose the excess layers around the waist. It is challenging for many reasons. The first reason is that it is difficult to “isolate” the abdominal muscles during exercise. The hip muscles lie in close proximity and are usually stronger than the abdominals. So when folks think they are strengthening the abdominals, usually it is the hip muscles working because that is a more familiar muscle contraction for them and an easier muscle to recruit. Therefore, the abdominals usually are not worked. Secondly, the way most abdominal machines are constructed facilitates recruiting the hip muscles. Third, it is so hard to isolate the abdominals and the specific exercises needed to isolate them are less glamorous to perform. However, if you choose to really work on your abdominals, you will

see wonderful functional results such as less back pain, improved posture, an improved golf round and less pain during running and gardening. So, try this first step in isolating your abdominals. Lie on the floor on your back with your knees bent up and feet on the floor. Gently but firmly contract your abdominals so the belly button is moving downward to the floor. Do this without the pelvis moving. Hold this contraction for five seconds (count out loud to avoid holding your breath). If your pelvis rocks back or moves, your legs are helping and therefore, the hip muscles are contracting which you are trying to avoid. Repeat this several times. Once you have mastered this and can do it in sitting and standing (don’t do this while walking), incorporate this step into your favorite abdominal exercise. This contraction must be held while you do crunches, leg lifts and lowering or curlups to fully exercise the abdominal muscles. Do as many repetitions as possible with proper technique and without holding your breath. Then

In the summer of 1969, Dr. Don Poole, a professor at Eastern Tennessee University, called up one of his recent graduates with a very clear message: Hurricane Camille is going to be a significant weather event. And right he was. Hurricane Camille hit Nelson County on the evening of August 19, 1969. Camille was only one of three Category 5 hurricanes to make landfall in the continental United States over the course of the 20th Century. The storm killed more than 150 people in and around Nelson County. That’s why Richard Becka, then a recent graduate with a degree in geology, and Don decided to head north. “We drove up to Nelson County, it was a 7 hour drive,” said Richard, remembering that he and Don were interested to see how the tremendous rains affected this area of Virginia. “We got pretty excited about it and did it almost overnight. We arrived a day or two after the storm.” Richard, who has enjoyed photography throughout his lifetime, brought 30 rolls of film with him.

“I only ended up using about a roll and a half. We found out real fast that shooting photos was the least of our priorities,” said Richard. “We weren’t prepared for the devastation that we saw. Nor were we prepared for the emotional devastation that affected so many people. It was like going into a war zone.” Richard and Don left Johnson City, TN for Nelson to study the effect of the storm. Don thought it would be good for his young student to spend some time in the field before heading off to graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh. Don was encouraging Richard to make the trip the centerpiece of his thesis there. But as it turns out, they didn’t get much studying done. “We found so many people struck with despair and sadness,” remembered Richard. “Cars and trucks were totally buried in the debris. I remember the first mountain I saw where there wasn’t a single tree. There was so much rain that fell so fast that it took every bit of trees, dirt, and boulders off those mountains.” Richard never forgot those few days he spent helping Camille victims in Nelson County, but somehow he did forget about the 60 or so photos he took while he was there. continued on page 34

continued from page 33 It wasn’t until Pete Rankin asked him out of clear blue skies, “You still have those slides of the flood?” Richard had forgotten he’d even visited Pete, and old Air Force buddy who was living in Afton at the time, during his trip to Nelson, but on a recent trip to Waynesboro (where Pete lives now), it all started coming back to him. Once Richard found the slides, it was clear that it wasn’t only Pete who was looking forward to seeing them. Woody Greenburg, who is on the Exhibits and Collections Committee at the Oakland-Nelson County’s Museum of Rural History is ecstatic to be adding Richard’s collection to the Camille Resource Center and he hopes that the Camille Resource Center will be seen as the best resource for researching Camille’s affect to the area. Richard’s photos will be one of 8 collections of photos, and one of only two sets of color photographs. And most importantly, Richard’s photos are of high quality and show different areas than any others the museum has in its collection. “They’re very crisp and clear,” said Woody. “They show bridges that we did not have pictures of and there are even some areas of the county that we have not identified where they are.” In addition to the nearly 1,000 photographs, the Camille exhibit features listening stations and news articles, but Woody said people – especially young children – are always amazed by photos like Richard’s. “They’ve heard about Camille, but seeing the destruction that occurred always gets their attention and I think that’s really the purpose of commemorating Camille,” said Woody. “We want the kids to remember what the County went through back then.” NCL
