APRIL IS THE "MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD" RALEIGH, N.C. – Gov. Beverly Perdue has proclaimed April the "Month of the Military Child" in North Carolina to honor the children of National Guard Soldiers and Airmen and those of all members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The proclamation recognizes all military children and youth for their heroism, character, courage and sacrifice. Perdue's action reinforces North Carolina's reputation as the most military-friendly state in the nation and coincides with the national month of the military child. Then Secretary of Defense Casper W. Weinberger began the tradition in 1986 to call attention to the roles children play in the lives of service members. Children growing up in military families often endure frequent moves and long separations from one, and sometimes both parents, which makes for a challenging family environment. The resilience of military children make it possible for their parents to serve. As part of the month-long recognition, military parents can visit the North Carolina National Guard Family Programs web page at www.nc.ngb.army.mil/index.php/fp/ momc/ to download a "Military Child Appreciation Award" certificate. There, they will find a link to the Family Programs Facebook page where parents can upload pictures and publicly recognize their kids. Child care professionals, teachers, community partners and business leaders are invited to visit a National Guard Family Programs center in their area for a Military Veteran Partnership meeting. North Carolina Military Veteran Partnerships create a network of experts who share knowledge and experience for use in solving the everyday challenges service members and families face. Those interested in finding a "Month of the Military Child" event can call their nearest Family Assistance Center. A listing is posted to the Family Programs web site as well as a calendar of upcoming events. Family Assistance Centers are a military resource support center that is designed to help support service members of the Guard and Reserve and their families with benefits and services they are eligible to receive. -30-

Community Cares | Selma Baker By Kathryn Jarvis, NCNG Family Programs
Members of the 4-H S.H.O.W (Stem, Henderson, Oxford and Wilford) of Granville County club vowed together they would "Make the Best Better." For more than a year, Club Leader Selma Baker, has had her team actively support North Carolina National Guard Family Programs by answering their call to duty. Baker said, "The 4 -club votes on the community services that they do. " Then one year, “They were asked to do Hero packs in Oxford.” Since then the group of teens have taught military kids how to make rockets at Kids on Guard events, conducted arts and crafts and showed the basics of electricity to military youth at Yellow Ribbon events. Community service is not the basis for 4-H. Baker said, “Some people think that because we do so many community services that the club only does these activities.” However, “the clubs base-subject is electricity.” Baker initially started the 4-H club to fulfill the need for more science-based curriculum for the students she home schools. But, if anyone Members of the 4-H S.H.O.W Granville County club stand in front of an 82nd sign. The group visited museums in Fort Bragg and is familiar with 4-H, they know if you are going to Fayetteville to learn more about the history do something you go all out. Baker said, and sacrifices of the U.S. Military Front: Anthony Back from left to right: Daniel, “Whenever the club does something they try and Vicky, Mya, Stewart. For Baker and her team it is not just the helping that is im- outstanding work in Electricity. Baker said, 4-H they have project record books they portant, it is gaining the understanding of how and why their help is so important. “Inhave to do every year. Meet the FAC | Southern Pines Unit Family Contact Center My name is David
Butler, and I run the Family Assistance Center out of the
Southern Pines, NC Armory. I am an old Soldier, born in Tennessee, but reared in North Carolina where my father’s folks lived. I am the fourth boy out of seven boys and three girls. I grew up on a farm and did not know there was any other way of life until I was drafted in 1969 into the U.S. Army. I had finished my freshman year of college when I was invited into the Army. I was away for almost four years and came home and got out of the Army so I could return to school. I graduated from college and started teaching school in the Richmond County area. One of the teachers approached me one day and ask if I was a veteran. I said “yes.” He said I should join the National Guard. I said, “why?” He told me about the training and extra money for one weekend a month and two weeks a year. So, in 1977, I joined Charlie Company 2/252 Armor in Southern Pines, N.C. It was great. From there I started to work for the National Guard and stayed for approximately 25 years. I retired in 1999 and went back to teaching high school history and government. I have also taught for the community college system. I am now involved with Family Programs for our Soldiers and Families. This is where the action is. I love helping Soldiers and Families with any issues that may arise. My baby son joined the same unit I served with . . . Co. C 252 CAB, and has been deployed twice. I am glad I can help these kids with their issues. I feel our Soldiers deserve all they get and more. I pray for them every night and those over the water . . . I pray for a safe return. God bless the North Carolina National Guard and Families that support them.

Over the course of the summer, I had the opportunity to attend an Operation Purple Teen Leadership Camp. The experience was absolutely outstanding! Besides immensely enjoying of outdoor activities, meeting people from around the country, and discovering new places, I was equipped with valuable leadership skills during the nearly two-week camp. After receiving leadership, communication, and team building skills, I was ready to organize my very own service project. At the suggestion of my State Youth Coordinator, Alice Dean, I finally decided to organize a Christmas Dinner Food Drive. My goal was to provide Christmas dinners for twenty-five National Guard Families who were experiencing financial pressure. The journey was phenomenal, and the food drive was met with huge success. Due to everyone’s generosity, I had the opportunity to give away even more than previously planned! Almost 200 different food items, as well as $500 in donations were collected. I was blown away by the generosity of Guard members and civilians alike. Each Family was given a large ham accompanied by a gift bag filled to the brim with a box of instant potatoes, two cans each of fruit and corn, three cans of green beans/peas, a pack of Hawaiian roles, bags of marshmallows and M&Ms, boxes of candy canes and hot chocolate, two coupons for free pies from Harris Teeter, and then two additional miscellaneous cans of food. Through this food drive, I gained invaluable skills and benefited from various experiences that I would never have engaged in otherwise. As the seemingly daunting project progressed, my fears were dispersed, and I was lost in the enjoyment and excitement of giving. I highly recommend that each and every National Guard teen attend an Operation Purple camp. If a week or two away from home does not interest you, I have also experienced various, local, weekend NCNG Teen Retreats and Operation Kids on Guard events at which I have challenged myself, met other Guard kids, and learned valuable lessons. These opportunities are open to all NCNG teens! They are phenomenal opportunities! Don’t miss a chance to attend one of these camps or retreats!
