Family Matters June 2011
Hi Everyone, July is here! Here we go into a summer packed full of fun. This month we have a lot of new announcements which can benefit you and your family in many ways. We have added a new twist to our Child and Youth Programs Kids on Guard Day Drills. This year children test their aim with our new mobile Archery sets, work in teams to navigate blindfolded in simulated mine fields and learn more about bionics while creating a hydraulic-moving,

bionic arm. But that is not all. Teens are getting what they want this year. Last year teens voiced their desire for a week-long teen retreat which; we now have. This year we are bringing teens together for an exciting adventure full of challenges and opportunities geared towards young adults. Check out page 14 for more information and how to register. Please take a look at page 4 for info on the new Caregiver Program which offers some much needed relief for our Families and veterans across the state. The Veterans Affairs program offers eligible post 9/11 caregivers relief such as in-home care, respite care and more. I urge eligible Families who are caregivers to take time for yourself and get the help and rest you may need. If you haven’t attended one of our Strong Bonds retreats, please check out page 5 to see the specifics on our upcoming events for Families, married couples and our single service members. You are sure to find something that fits your lifestyle and needs in NCNG Family Programs. These programs and services are designed to serve you…the way you have served your State and Nation. Community Cares I Volunteer Spotlight
Shining Light on Kids On Guard By Kathryn Jarvis, NCNG Family Programs Investing in CD's, managing finances and strategizing your budget are some things that BB&T community banks offer. But if you dig a little deeper you will find more. BB&T's "values are practical habits that enable individuals to live, be successful, and achieve happiness." This philosophy stems farther than the banks structures, they spread this throughout their communities with a program called BB&T Lighthouse Project. Lighthouse Project launched full force committing not only money but also time. BB&T offers employees the opportunity to select non-profit community organizations and groups. The projects are required to be done during a certain time period of the year and must be completed in 3-months. Approved projects, grant employees 4-hours of paid time to volunteer and fund the supplies needed to complete projects. BB&T reports that "In its first two years, the BB&T Lighthouse Project touched the lives of more than 3 million people in 25 states. BB&T employees voluntarily donated nearly 100,000 hours, rolling up their sleeves and getting to work." This year BB&T Corporation employees from Durham selected North Carolina National Guard Kids Photo from BB&T Lighthouse Project Facebook. Become on Guard Program as their project to shine some a fan. Search BB&T Lighthouse Project on Facebook.com light on. Velinda Moore ,Team Leader for Project Lighthouse and BB&T Banking Officer / IT Systems Specialist said the Kids on Guard Program "Was the one that seemed to have a good fit, need and timing for these projects." The team's 14 volunteers worked together to round up supplies for the Kids on Guard Program such as Archery targets, target stands and a backdrop. Moore said, she separated her team into two groups, some did the shopping and some helped set up and support the Greenville Kids on Guard event. Over the course of 2-months, the team donated more than 90 hours to the successful completion of the project and donated supplies and equipment totaling $4,200. (Continued on Page 11) JUNE 2011

While veterans have an array of skills and vast training, many struggle to understand how their military experience can translate into the professional civilian environment. The Mil2FedJobs web portal uses veterans’ military occupational codes (MOC) to query federal openings that match their qualifications on the USAJOBS web tool. In addition, Mil2FedJobs allows civilian hiring managers to identify specific military occupations that share attributes with specific jobs in their agencies. Although this new web portal is located on the Maryland Workforce site, any service member can use this tool to connect to jobs nationwide through USAJOBS.

Moore said when she helped on Saturday with the event, "It was more organized and more high-tech than I expected. The stuff they did like having someone come and talk about prosthetics is really timely for these kids because they do end up dealing with that. If it's not their own family it's some family that their dad served with or their mom served with…" This year Kids on Guard has revamped some aspects of the day drills to reflect what is going on today. Kids still have a chance to see equipment their dad or mom uses in the military. They also work to build their own bionic arm and test the marksman skills with the now mobile Archery targets. Nora Patterson, Spouse of 1452nd TC Soldier, PFC Joshua Patterson, has taken her two children, Cassie, 5 and Clay 8, to several Kids on Guard events. Patterson said, "I have enjoyed all of the Military Kids learn a little about prosthetics during Kids on KOGs we have attended. This past one was our Guard events. (Photo provided by Bridgette Carroll, NCNG third. It is wonderful to be with soldiers and volunChild and Youth Programs) teers who care about the children and their families so much. Getting hands on with military equipment made a connection for me with what my husband is involved with. Some of the "scary or unknown" was removed. The children were completely engaged in every activity. What a great opportunity it is was to watch my children grow through learning and trying new things." This past Kids on Guard event in Greenville, Cassie enjoyed the team building games like Mine Field, while her brother Clay enjoyed " the EOD robots and doing archery." Patterson said, "I hope KOG (Kids on Guard) continues for a long time as it is a wonderful asset to our military kids." Alice Dean, NCNG Family Programs State Child and Youth Coordinator, said, “We sincerely appreciate Military Kids are doing more hands –on Science and Technolthe donation made to the Kids on Guard 501C3 ogy activities like exploring the wonders of electricity. (Photo from BB&T Project Lighthouse. Their donation has provided by Bridgette Carroll, NCNG Child and Youth Proallowed us to expand some of the activities we do grams) with the Kids on Guard program to be mobile. This will allow our NCNG children throughout the state to participate, no matter where they live.” Through the support and partnerships, like BB&T's Lighthouse Project, Kids on Guard will keep bringing a day of fun and learning to military parents and children across the state.
