JULY 2010

Presidents Message - Wayne Miller (aka PdTG guy) As I change hats from 1st VP to that of President of NCPP….. I reflect over what a great and fun year it was. First, I want to thank all of the NCPP board: Randy Cazinha President, Denny Weigand 2nd/3rd VP, Tom O’Connor Webmaster/ Focal Point Editor, Malcolm Slight Treasurer, Michael McNamara Secretary, Lisa Duncan Hospitality, and Laura Cottril sitting in as Past President, Tod Gomes Social Media, and those who pitched in at the last minute to help. Plus Ken Johnson and Charles Anderson had to bow out before the final curtain. My goal as your President is to inspire, mentor, and help NCPP grow. You might have noticed that some of the above names have more than one board position next to them. Denny took over for 3rd VP membership, and Tom is doing Webmaster and FP Editor. When we ask for volunteers the room goes silent! Why, this might be because people do not know what the position entails and how much time they have to give! I will shed a little light on the time commitment for each position (you might be surprised). All board members are expected to attend monthly, a board meeting of 1½ hours before each general meeting. President: 4-8 hours per month 1st VP (Speakers/Programs/Education): 8 hours per month 2ndVP (Print Competition): 2-hours month. 3rd VP (Membership): 2-4 hours per month Secretary: 2-6 hours per month Treasurer, and other chair positions: 2-4 hours per month I know some spend more time. As 1st VP I put in 8-16 hours a month. So giving back to NCPP will put you back (1½ officers meeting, 2-4 average) for a total of 5-6 hours a month. So when one individual has to do two positions they are giving 10-12 hours of their time for YOU as a member of NCPP.

Why should I give my time to NCPP one might ask? • Make a difference in your organization. • Enhance the value of the organization by giving back to your organization. • Gain satisfaction of doing something useful and contributing to the greater good. • Broaden your skills, knowledge and horizon working with others. • Network building skills working with other photographers and community. • Impact your organization, business, community, at the local, state and national level.

You can make a difference serving on your board. There is a lot going on behind the scenes to run this great organization. Be a part of it.

JULY 2010

Presidents Message - Wayne Miller (aka PdTG guy) What is on the horizon for the rest of 2010? I like to set goals. As a matter of fact I am a “heat seeking missile” when it comes to goals. My goals as your President of NCPP, and I need all of you to help to make it happen. • Membership: Build the organization up to 80 Active Professionals, 8 Apprentices. • Meetings: Fill the room (we have room for 60, so show up please.) • Education: 2 to 3 full day workshops a year as NCPP fundraisers. • CPP and Masters Programs: 6-8 new CPP’s in the next 12 months. • Focal Point content: I need you to contribute content to build it to 40-pages. • Socialize/Network: Utilize the meeting room from 6-7pm to visit with other members. • Board and Chairs: Reduce time commitment to 2-4 hours a month.

So there it is fellow Professional Photographers. My goal list for NCPP as your President.

JULY 2010 Best of Show by Wayne Miller

On a recent road trip to Portland to visit family I captured this image. It rained almost every day and there was a break in the weather (I got lucky). This image was an HDR (High Dynamic Range) capture of 21 images. Set-up was on a tripod leveled, body in portrait position, (my Custom HDR setting on C3) Canon 5d Mk2, ISO 100, AV, Bracketed 0, +2, -2, custom white balance, continuous drive mode, exposure averaging, mirror lock up. Using a cable release I fired off 7 bracketed images (7x3=21). I always love to shoot HDR at twilight time when the sun has just dropped in the horizon and the city lights are on. Trouble is it was 8:55pm when I captured this and a lot of the office light were off except a few (must be NCPP board) burning the midnight oil. After getting back to the desktop I uploaded into Lightroom 2 and did my review, pick, delete work flow. I then export directly out of LR to Photomatix with the new LR plug it…..sweet. With a Pano I usually do the middle sequence first as it is a good average, and then I process the balance as the same exact settings. After Photomatix Tone mapping they are imported back into Photoshop. I then select the 7 HDR processed images in LR and use the drop down edit in PS Merge to Panorama in Photoshop. Most of the times I pick the auto align/blend button and let PS Pano do its magic. After the merge to Pano it takes a few seconds or minutes depending on your processor. I then do the final touches in Photoshop: touch up, clone out dust spots, etc. The actual Pano is 40x120 inches but I cropped it down to 18x36 for this print (still have the 120 one). I sent the file off to my favorite lab Bay Photo and had if printed on metallic paper, spray coated, and mounted on gator board. Because it is an 18x36 Pano and not a standard 16x20 competition print I toned it down 15% for the competition lights. BTW if you send an image to Bay Photo as a competition print they print it down 15-20% to allow for the bright comp lights. Tip: the comp print should be viewed with a spot light, or out in direct sunlight to simulate print comp lights. My print “Portland at dusk” will need to be displayed with a spotlight otherwise in normal room light it will look too dark. I really feel honored that my image was chosen for Best of Show, thank you.

JULY 2010 NCPP 2010 PPA Merit Pint Winners

Congratulations to those who have merited prints at the 2010 PPA International print competition!!! The work that went into submitting these images should be recognized for what it is: A lot of time toil and expense to submit, agonizing over finding the "right" image, and putting all the pieces together to make it work. Sometimes an image we didn't expect to merit...merits, and vice versa. The scariest is the first submission: the doubts, the turmoil, the emotions are all frayed. One gives a big sigh of relief as the package gets into the mail. The next submission gets easier because you know the ropes. The joy at receiving a merit for even one print makes it all worthwhile. The agony of no merits fades quickly, and makes you more determined to do it better next time. A Master of Photography degree is not easily won but is so worth it in the end. New or old submitters...we salute you!

Marketing Sales and Business by Tod Gomes CPP “ALWAYS MARKETING” Whenever I am out and about, I ALWAYS have an eye out and an ear open for my next opportunity to make a contact. Whether you are in line at the grocery store, at your favorite restaurant having dinner or waiting at the doctor’s office, you need to be on your toes to take advantage of any opportunity that may come up. A personal example of mine was when my wife was in the labor and delivery room last month (active labor) at John Muir Hospital, I handed out two cards to the nurses in the room. Conversations started, I mentioned that I am a photographer and the next thing you know, they were asking me for my card! While we were in the Intensive Care Nursery Unit (ICNU), I handed out 2 more cards. Now, one of them was for a wedding and her “coworker’s husband is a photographer”, but she still took my card and said ‘I’ll keep you in mind” (she didn’t sound to confident about her current choice). Just by ALWAYS having my marketing/networking cap on, I made 4 contacts just by having everyday conversation with the people I have come across in my everyday routine (Ok, my scenario is not quite “everyday”, but it IS to the extreme when it comes to “Always Marketing” and always keeping an ear/eye out). Something to remember when “Always Marketing”, you NEED to ALWAYS have business cards with you! How many times have you looked in your wallet/purse and said “sorry, I am all out”? Every time you say this, it is a missed opportunity. Business cards do not cost much and if you have them on file, they don’t take long to order either. Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the difference.

JULY 2010 Making it Work by Cheryl Bigman

How does a single parent with limited time and limited funds make her dreams of becoming a professional photographer come true? That was the question I asked myself 5 years ago. I’ll never forget my first NCPP meeting. To me, it looked like everyone there had their act together but me! (yes, I’m talkin’ about you guys!) I was SO excited to be mingling with people who were passionate about their jobs and knew much more than I did about photography. But when I got home and faced the realities of my situation, I melted into a puddle of tears. How was I ever going to make this work? Could I actually make a living as a photographer, or was I destined to go back to the cubicle life at a corporate job I hated. After 40+++ years, I knew in my heart the only way I was going to be happy was to follow my dreams. I was determined (as Tim Gunn says on Project Runway) to “make it work”. First, I made a list of priorities – top of which was learning Photoshop. I am a self-taught photographer and knew I had to find a way to learn Photoshop on my own as well. Enter Lynda.com. What a fantastic site filled with how-to videos on anything you could possibly want to learn (thank you Denny). I approached PS on a “need-to-know” basis. A stain needed to be removed from a carpet, that’s the video I watched. A face needed wrinkle-removal, I found a video on that. Soon I was creating my own actions based on the techniques I learned and still use them today. I always had my eye out for sales and “freebie” templates/actions from various vendors, and took full advantage of them. Am I now an expert in Photoshop? Not by a long shot – but I know how to get the job done. Webinars Webinars Webinars! I would not be where I am today without them. There are more free or very reasonably priced webinars now than ever before. If your time is limited like mine, you can’t be traveling all over the place for workshops. Webinars are the perfect solution. Many are recorded so you can watch them at your convenience. I’ve started following my favorite resources on Twitter and Facebook as that’s the best place to hear about upcoming webinars (and free giveaways too!) Here’s a few great resources offering awesome webinars: Photography Schoolhouse CreativeLIVE (new from Dane Sanders) Marathon Press PPA Sarah Petty’s The Joy of Marketing Many vendors also offer free how-to webinars on their products YouTube Once I’d saved some money, I did attend a few key out-of-town workshops. I was extremely selective, making sure the workshops focused on the things I needed to know. I studied the PPA Benchmark Surveys and came up with a 5-Year Business Plan with annual financial goals and a strategy to get there. I made the decision to remain a home-based studio based on the Benchmark findings and created a cozy projection area in my family room. The feedback from clients has always been positive (especially when they smell the fresh-baked cookies as they walk in!) So, in case you’re wondering how I’m doing… I just had my biggest portrait sale ever - $5,000! How’d I make THAT work you ask? 3 Steps: 1. Planning Consultation at clients’ home – looked at their wall spaces, showed them samples of canvas portraits and albums, listened to their vision, and had them tell me what they wanted. Gave them a basic portrait price list (no surprises). 14

Northern California Professional Photographers

Focal Point

JULY 2010 Making it Work by Cheryl Bigman

2. Portrait Session – Had fun! Shot images based on what they told me they wanted at the Planning Consultation. 3. Ordering Appointment – Prior to, emailed a confirmation telling them what to expect (allow 2 hours, I’ll place your order shortly after the appointment, payment is due in full, etc…) and sent a more detailed price list of the wall canvas collections I offer since that’s what THEY told me they wanted (again – no surprises). FYI, used Michael Corsentino’s strategy of showing both “the price” and “the value” so they felt like they were saving money! Projected Images via ProSelect – used Simply Canvas’s cluster templates for ProSelect. Chose a layout and the images to go in it. Easy for me, easy for the client! Focused on Wall Portraits. They can order gift prints from my online proofing gallery and send the link to extended family and friends (another Michael Corsentino tip). What I sold – (2) Gallery Wrap Canvas Clusters, (1) Gallery Wrap Canvas 20x24, (1) Session Album = $5,000, not including gift prints. I was motivated to write this article to inspire anyone who might be struggling or just getting started in the world of pro photography. You don’t need a fancy studio, and you don’t need to spend thousands traveling to workshops. It’s not easy, but if you’re tenacious and strategic, you’ll find a way to make it work!

What's Lightroom Got To Do With It? by Denny Weigand

I had the pleasure of going to West Coast School for the past week. This is a school put on by PPC (Professional Photographers of California) in San Diego. You choose a principal instructor whom you stay with for the week and immerse yourself in the subject chosen. I chose Jack Davis, a true genius in Lightroom and Photoshop, a Photoshop Hall of Fame guru with 30 years experience in design. Now you all may know my insistence that Lightroom is the only way to go to process images, and Lightroom 3, the newest release, is the “cat’s meow” of image processing. I’m going to try to pass on a few of the new tidbits in my upcoming messages, but they are too many to mention here. There are things like the Graduated Filter and the Adjustment Brush which will truly amaze you when correcting foreground and background imbalances. Ever had noise that Noise Ninja could not eliminate? The Luminance slider in Lightroom is a WOW slider that eliminates the noise. Want to put a ray of sunlight (any color) illuminating your subject? I will show you how. There’s probably room here to encourage you to consider joining PPC. They do an awful lot of good statewide. I happen to be the Membership Chair so I’m bent in this direction. NCPP is an affiliate of PPC. They hold image regional print reviews for those of you going for your Masters in which you can have a print “sealed” and automatically approved by PPA for an exhibit merit. We also need to be cognizant of our print comp going digital. PPA will be accepting digital images in their national competition starting in 2011. Some Regions have already started the process, and have indicated at the Judges Conference at Imaging USA that submissions have doubled and tripled because of the low cost to the photographer. I had occasion to witness this process first hand at Imaging USA and it really excited me with the possibilities (and the savings) for photographers. NCPP needs to adapt to these changes in Print Comp to keep up with what is happening around them. More on this later as details become available. I’m sorry I will miss “the becker” as I am in Alaska for all of July shooting (photographing) bears, a wedding, an event, and the images of myself (on timer) drinking and having a great time on the Inland Passage.
