Presidents Message - Wayne Miller (aka Blogomeister / PdTG guy)
When will it all come together? If you made the PPC Expo in South San Francisco you got a chance to see some of the greatest photographers in the business. Tim Meyer and Hanson Fong did a great workshop with the "Safari with the Masters" at the Palace of Fine Arts. Even with construction that closed the Palace and the fog and coldness I still had fun and learned a lot from these great Masters. Bambi Cantrell’s program on Friday Night was awesome and more tips learned from another great photographer. Saturday’s line up was also great and the trade show had several NCPP sponsors at the show: Camera West, BayPhoto, BurrellColour, BorrowLenses, Photoflex, and a host of others. I would like to thank the NCPP volunteers that helped staff the PPC booth: Tom O’Connor, Ann Gordon, Lisa Duncan, Denny Weigand, Nicole Gee, and myself. We had a chance to promote both PPC and NCPP. For those that didn’t make it, you missed out on some great education and a chance to meet and network with other photographers. Congratulations to Denny Weigand for achieving his PPA Craftsman degree this year. FYI, one must earn 13-speaking merits and 12-service merits to obtain this commendable honor. Way to go Denny! NCPP members can have a free listing on the website, “Find a Photographer” so if you are interested contact me at wm@wmphotos.com for details. In my speaking with other pro photogs I hear that sales are down (some say only 40% from two years ago). That is a 60% drop. Ouch! What can we do to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps? One way is education and educating the rest of the world. How do we do that? Step one is educating ourselves to the current happenings and trends. I hear some say “ I am not a wedding / pet / landscape / sports / portrait / family / etc. photographer and the speaker is an…..so I didn’t go to the NCPP meeting”. Hmmm… I say! Are we that good at everything else that we cannot learn from others??? I don’t think so. Each photographic discipline has its’ own uniqueness and we can learn a lot from it. If you are a wedding photographer then you can learn something from landscape, pet, sports, etc. Each discipline has its own challenges, and the more we know as a pro the better we are in circumstances that challenge us. In today’s market we need to broaden our horizon, and this is done by education in photography and marketing. We have had several speakers on social networking and the insights have helped all that attended. Knowing what the current trend is will become more vital in the coming years if we want to flourish as professionals. If you are not doing social marketing you will be left behind. Our last speaker Jules Bianchi really had some great info on blogging and social networking. I got several tips on setting up blogs to interact with other applications and have put them to immediate use on NCPP’s website as well as my own. Now when I make a post on my blog it automatically goes to my Facebook Fan page (blog tab) Twitter, LinkedIn, and others. One entry instead of several. What a great time saver. Plus with All-in-One SEO, both NCPP and my site get better rankings with the search engines. 4

Presidents Message - Wayne Miller (aka Blogomeister / PdTG guy) September 14th is another great speaker Rodger Daines -“Achieving Success in Print Competitions” (this is a full 3-hour special presentation and People Choice Print Comp). OK, so I hear well I don’t enter print comp so why should I go? If you want to take your photography to the next level and give your clients a better image, then you might want to go! Speaking of education, PPA Super Monday is in October 25th, and Denny and I are doing a “Lightroom Soup to Nuts” full day class. Guess who the Soup is and Nuts is and you get a 10% discount. It is $99 if you sign up before Oct 11th and $120 thereafter. If you’re a PPA member you can get a service merit for attending. So hurry and sign up now. Stargazing the next frontier……………… Shot with the Canon 7d, 16-35 mm lens at 16mm, ISO 100, f/2.8, 1/20 second time-lapse. Used an eBay remote (same as the Canon) that I got from China for $25 and set it to fire a 20sec exposure every 40-seconds. Started at 9:00pm and got 480 images jpeg medium, until the battery died at 2:30am in my backyard. Used free PC software, "Startrails", that stitches them all together in one image or does time-laps video. Yea I know it is basic but it is my first attempt and more to follow. Just goes to show that you can capture images in your own backyard in the middle of the night : ).
The PdTG will be doing several stargazing outings so contact me if you are interested in finding out more. For the best shots you need to get out of the light pollution of the cities so that is a 2-4 hour drive into the mountains or deserts. Plus it is better if there is hardly any moon, and the stars and planets need to be aligned. Like any type of photography it takes a little research and work to make it happen. So what are you waiting for to make it happen, “When will it all come together”? My short answer is when you make it all come together. Shot with my iPhone HDR app from Oakhurst Country Club in Clayton.

You Get What You Give It really amazes me that professionals who are part of the NCPP family contribute their time and energy to help those in need. Even more amazing is what that professional gets in return. It usually is far more than they gave. It’s best when the item, thing, thought or advice is given without thought of a return on their “investment”. It is then that the return becomes “special”. I am going to give you a few examples of this giving and getting. These are just a few that I know about, but don’t encompass all that is given by our professionals. Cheryl Bigman regularly contributes her time and expertise to Chelsea’s Hope Foundation. In return she gets the love and affection of those she helps. Her work with this foundation is reflected in her photography, producing images that are sensitive and reflective of her compassion. Wayne Miller regularly offers his expertise pro bono to several organizations. Most recently was his work with the Stand Down, an organization providing photography for veterans in need. He also contributes time and effort to other worthwhile charitable organizations. His return is that his images take on a sensitiveness and uniqueness not seen in other photographers. I am another example of getting more than I give. My work as a DRA (Digital Retouch Artist) for Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep brings me a sense of peace that I did not expect. I get a sense of breathing new life and providing closure to parents who have lost children. Gustavo Fernandez contributes to NILMDTS as an area coordinator and also to Kids on Bikes, an organization which he founded and contributes his time and energy. This high-energy person volunteers his time as second shooter to other professionals and gains in expertise and professionalism as a result. Laura Cottril’s experience with her niece has made her a better person and a better photographer at the same time. One only needs to see her work before and after to realize how this experience has made her images more effective, caring, and sensitive. Just a few examples of how one gets far more than they give. Our work as professionals needs to have the giving factor in it. It makes us more sensitive to creating images with feeling that are a step above the ordinary. The next time you have the opportunity to give of your talents to someone, whether that is an organization or a fellow photographer, do it and I guarantee you will get more than you give.

Roger’s program will describe and explain the “how’s and why’s” of print competitions from local to International level. He will examine the intricacies and “gamesmanship” needed to win! If you are interested in print competitions, and improving your images for your client base, this program will assist you in achieving it. Entering print competitions is a challenge, but it will help you to improve your images for your clients. We got there around 5:00pm on Saturday, pretty close to closing time and people were leaving, so some areas were tourist free. There was a wedding going on in the main part of town and the remaining visitors were gathered there. It was my first visit to Calico and I headed through town to the top of the hill for an overall view of the town. That is where I spotted the bottle house and set up my gear for an HDR capture. There were still people wandering around so I waited until the right moment to press the shutter. I did get several other captures without people in them, and this one with the guy standing in the stone house to the left of the bottle house. I liked the feel of this image so decided to make a print.
The three original raw files about shot at ISO 100 with a Canon 5d Mk2 16-35mm at 23mm f/8.0 bracketed shutter speeds (left to right) 0EV=1/250 sec, -2EV=1/1000 sec, and +2EV=1/250 sec (all on a tripod with a cable release). After rendering the HDR in Photomatix, I corrected the wide angle lens distortion in Photoshop CS4, and exported to Topaz Adjust 4 with the setting listed next to the image. Then the image went to Noise Ninja for noise reduction then back into Photoshop for the final tweaking with curves, and dodging and burning on a soft light layer. I ended up with 5 layers in PS the original, copy (Topaz adjust/Noise Ninja) shape (dodge/burn) and two other layers to dodge and burn some spots in the sky. It seems like a lot of steps to get to the destination but it is the journey that is the most fun along with the learning experience. I spent (invested) 30 minutes according to the History file in Photoshop plus 10-minutes in Lightroom and Photomatix.

SEPTEMBER 2010 Marketing - Sales - Business by Cheryl Bigman
Follow your heart… by Cheryl Bigman I recently returned from Skip’s Summer School in Las Vegas, and wanted to share a few thoughts about my experience. As you may remember from my last article, I tend to be very selective about the workshops and classes I take in order to stay financially sound. But when I saw the lineup of speakers Skip Cohen had put together, I just couldn’t pass this one up. They were all people who I’ve looked up to as “making it work” in this business. What I didn’t expect was to come away with a renewed faith in following my own heart. You see, this workshop was not about learning the latest Photoshop techniques or how to take great pictures. It was about passion. It was about doing things your own way. It was about heart. Each and every speaker had a completely different way of running their business and shooting pictures. No two were alike. Yet, there they were – ALL EXTREMELY successful professional photographers wanting to share what they love. Sometimes, I think we get so caught up in wanting to know what kind of cameras, lenses, and actions “those people” use (especially when we’re fairly new to the business) that we never find our true selves. We never take the time to figure out who we are and what we have to offer. This workshop reinforced the idea that we all have something very unique about us that defines not only our photographic style, but our whole approach to this business. It’s that special something that makes people want to work with us and refer their friends and family. It’s how we relate to people. It’s how we make them feel during the entire process from initial contact through delivery of final products to follow up. It’s not just about taking good pictures. Listening to the likes of Scott Bourne, Jasmine Star, Cliff Mautner, Skip Cohen, Kirk Voclain (and he is DEFINITELY one of a kind), Kevin Kubota, Sarah Petty, Dane Sanders, Joe Buissink, Yervant, and so many more, it was blatantly obvious why they were all successful. They oozed passion! THAT was the common thread among them. Each one conveyed what it is about this business that they love, and how that drives them to keep their feet on the gas pedal. For Jasmine, it was telling the stories of fabulous people in love, for Sarah it was fun, happy kids and sharing her marketing expertise, for Kirk it was cool high school seniors, for Cliff it was creating mood and texture with light, for Kevin it was personal projects, and for perhaps the most powerful speaker of all, former combat photographer Stacy Pearsall, it was about honoring our soldiers and veterans, and providing a place for aspiring photographers to find that same passion all of the speakers expressed. I came away from this experience feeling more certain than ever that anyone who’s truly passionate about this business will make it simply because that passion leaves them no other choice. It drives them to keep pushing forward, to try new things, to share their successes and their failures so that others may learn from them. I hope you all have a chance to attend next year’s Summer School. They’re expanding the program to include more hands-on work with some of the best in the biz. This year, they also had a great lineup of vendors offering special discounts. Check it out at: http://mei500.com/.

SEPTEMBER 2010 Marketing - Sales - Business by Jay Yogan
It’s not the economy Many photographers believe that there are just too many photographers out there. Unfortunately, they believe that their competition is the other photographer down the street. If you build a distinctive brand, your competition isn’t the other photographer; it is other businesses that consume our potential client’s disposable income. Your competition is that fine dining experience at a restaurant, the video game at Best Buy, the daily $5 dollar coffee at Starbucks, a new pair of True Religions. Successful studios, for that matter any successful business, begin with a brand that engages the consumer. They sell the why and not the what. Simon Sinek’s book “Start With Why” touts that consumers don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. Selling the why in your business allows the consumer to engage, connect and believe in the same things that you do. For instance, if I’m always talking about discounts, specials and deals in my marketing then I’m telling my customer that I’m a discounter; I offer value based on price and price is the focus of my business. I will attract the discount customer. If instead, my tactics are to talk about family, community, memories, and experiences, my customer can engage, connect with the same beliefs not based on price. Why are you in business? What is your business’s purpose…cause…belief? •
Offer quality product at an affordable price
•
Create cool, trendy looking images
•
Produce portraits to hang on walls and above mantles or
•
Build family and community
•
Create lasting memories…forever
•
Dispense emotional experiences
•
Build self-esteem by defining the individual
Focus your marketing on the why, not the what. Your brand will become more distinctive and you’ll be amazed how customers will want to belong to your purpose and cause, saving their disposable income for something they believe in, your beliefs.
