NOVEMBER 2010

Presidents Message - Wayne Miller (aka Blogomeister / PdTG guy) Time flies and waits for no one It seems like I just put the winter stuff away and it is almost time to pull it out again. The holidays are a busy time of the year for all and I hope that this last year was a successful one. It is time to spend time with family, friends, loved ones, and your clients. It is also time to start thinking about you and your business in 2011! Yes, it is time to do some soul searching about you and your business. You are not your business and your business is not you. Are you running your business or is it running you? Did you make a goal list for 2010? By the end of December it is time to review it to see how successful you were. Which goals were obtained and which ones were short. Then ask yourself if the short list was a pie in the sky or if they didn’t make the completed list because of a faulty action plan. Hmmm, there is a route here: Goal + Plan + Execution + Tenacity = Success…………. At a recent East-Bay Smug meeting “Get Clarity” the speaker was Jeff Jochum, an outstanding presenter whose message was geared toward the above. Gustavo Fernandez, the organizer, pulled in another great speaker for the group, way to go Gustavo. Funny thing is that 137 RSVP’ed Yes and only about 40 showed up. This seems to be a regular pattern that happens too often. Because the meetings are free people sign-up and then have nothing to lose if they don’t go. Hmmm, Well I am telling those who missed this one missed an opportunity that doesn’t come along very often: Self-evaluation. One of the hardest things to do is to look at oneself and be objective. I know where I would like to be and sometimes I choose the path of least resistance or just a dead end. But then again, there is “No success like failure and failure is no success at all” – Bob Dylan. So what does this mean… Well if one doesn’t fail then maybe one isn’t trying something out of their comfort zone. Prudence breeds mediocrity. I have failed a lot in my life, and I still fail, and will continue failing because I will always try to do things that are outside my comfort zone. One of my favorite sayings: Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. Theodore Roosevelt

So we must fail in order to succeed. If you are specific, or lucky, or do a ton of preparation you may succeed on the first try. But if you fail and give up then you will be lost in the masses. I keep one foot on the treadmill trying new stuff while I raise the other foot off the stable ground to rebalance. Sometimes I fall. Other times I get balance and clarity that I wouldn’t have gotten any other way. In this quest I am consistently trying to reinvent and re-evaluate myself as a person and as a photographer. I know that I am an OFWCWAHW (ask me what this means) and that a lot of the new opportunities are flowing to the new upcoming photographers. Remember you were there at one time. So I say be not afraid of failure my friend but embrace it and keep trying, for without tenacity you will never taste the fruits of success. Ok. So back to the regular programming: If you were at the Oct. meeting with Marc Benjamin “Light, Shadows and Curves” you were treated to some great images and inspiration. 4

Presidents Message - Wayne Miller (aka Blogomeister / PdTG guy) Marc gave a great presentation and his collection of prints was absolutely fantastic. It would be nice if we had an NCPP volunteer to do a write up of the presentation (hint! hint!) Print competition had a new twist with PI (Projected Images) which were displayed on a 25” LCD screen. Tom O’Connor (2NDVP-Print Chair aka Imaging Chair) did a great job pulling all the items together in a neat package. Tom did all the footwork and procured the LCD carrying case so we can have PI comp at NCPP. Thanks Tom for putting this together. Tom is doing a great job as 2nd VP and also editor of the Focal Point our monthly publication. BTW the Focal Point since going online has been viewed over 3,200 times for the past nine issues. This is ground-breaking since when it was printed we only did 80-100 copies a month. The NCPP Blog has been getting a lot of visitor’s too which helps spread the word about NCPP. NCPP blog: http://ncpponline.org/ stop by for a visit as the content is always being updated and if you want to add an article or some interesting photographic information send it to the blogomeister@ncpponline.org Coming up for November 9th is NCPP’s own Michael Van Auken with a special program. Check details here: http://ncpponline.org/?page_id=17 This is a special program, we have several vendors lined up and a raffle with some really cool prizes. So better boogie on down bro and dudettes. BTW it is People’s Choice Print Competition so enter something.

Tom captures this very rare “red camper back” (Scientific name “parte posteriore rossa del campeggiatore”) capable of speeds up to 70mph, on the prairie off Hwy 395 near Mono Lake on a recent road trip. Tom set up and sat for hours in the hot sun disguising himself as a tourist photographer to get close enough to get this image. If you look closely you can see the determination in Tom’s excitement as he got the money shot. Tom O’Connor gets the “Red Camper Back” – photo and story by Wayne Miller

NCPP Mission Statement: The Northern California Professional Photographers is an organization dedicated to advancing the business of professional photography. Best of Show - "Little House on the Prairie" by Wayne Miller

The image “Lil house on the prairie” was captured in Gold Point, NV, an inhabited (population 50) ghost town North-west of Las Vegas off Hwy 95. On a road trip in April 2009 for my birthday Katherine (my lovely wife) spent two weeks sightseeing and making pictures. We did the Route 66 from Barstow CA, to Kingston AZ, Grand Canyons, Las Vegas, and Death Valley with a side trip to Gold Point. We arrived at Gold Point an hour before sunset and scoped out the town, I had been here about 2 years ago and things change a little. There was a local there who had restored an old store/bar and invited us in. This place was amazing, with memorabilia all over the place, a shuffle board, pool table, and old western bar. The owner offered us a drink so we had a beer. When I put up money he said he didn’t have a liquor license but we could and did make a donation. We chatted for a while and at sunset I set out to photograph while Katherine stayed in the store. This place was a gold mine of old shacks, buildings, and vehicles, a candy store for photographers. Ok, about the image: The image was an HDR capture and the bracketed images:

For the gear heads: Canon 5d Mk2, 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, 38mm focal, ISO 100, f/6.3, fist image – 0EV @ 1/50 sec, middle image -2EV@ 1/200 Sec, and right image +2@ 1/13 sec. HDR was rendered in Photomatix and final tweaking done in Photoshop CS5. Print was done by Bay Photo, my favorite lab. So if you are ever on a road trip check out Gold Point and if you’re around during the winter remember it snows there. My last visit was May 2006 and there was 6-in of snow on the ground. 11

NOVEMBER 2010 Marketing, Sales and Business by Jay Yogan

Things are bad. How would you like to own a photo studio in this town? Housing values down 60% 6.7% foreclosure rate on mortgages, that’s 1 out of 15 Percentage of population with a bachelor's degree‐below state average. This town made the Top 100 list in these categories: 1) county with the largest number of people without health insurance coverage 2) city with the highest unemployment growth from 2000 to 2009 3) city with the highest unemployment (21.3%) 4) county with the largest number of people moving out compared to moving in Data from www.city‐data.com

Now, the good news… 23.7% of the households in this town make $100k or more in income. That’s a total of 2,814 families. If the studio averages 2 family sessions a week for the year, that would be 100 sessions, less than 3.6% of the demographic. How do you attract those 100 sessions? It’s all about branding. The studio marketed their brand, focusing on the things they believe, in this case the family. From booth displays, co‐op marketing with other businesses in town, to brochures, and social media, the studio branding (the beliefs, purposes and causes) reflected the why of their business essence. And this week, I received a message that she just completed a $13k sale of multiple wall collections to a family, not the typical cookie cutter wall displays, that’s not her brand. These were a variety of metallic PrintWraps, framed prints and Off the Walls with ProTexture spray as part of the wall collection. Yes, you are allowed to mix finishes. Her brand is about being custom. It’s one way that she differentiates herself from other photographers in her town, and her customers appreciate that. See, they believe in the same core values…family, quality and custom. If you build your brand then tell the world through marketing in a coherent and consistent manner your customers will find you. If they engage in the same beliefs, purposes and causes as you do, they 1) won’t focus on price 2) show up for appointments 3) won’t nitpick 4) will tell their friends of the experience 5) become loyal customers 6) say thank you. The success of a business in any industry is driven by innovation and marketing. Building your brand to attract YOUR customer, the customer whose beliefs are shared with yours, will prevent bad times from affecting your business. Market to find your customer. What do you believe?
