AUGUST 2011 President’s Message – Kevallyn Paskos

Dear NCPP,

I would like to take a few minutes to share some highlights of our July 12th meeting! It was a big night with new board members being sworn in! Its official, I have my new gavel! Our board meeting went well and discussed past and future agenda items. Each board member will have a vital role in keeping with current NCPP standards and rules while at the same time, working out new goals to continually enrich this organization. FYI, all former board members are welcome at each monthly meeting but please be respectful of our 4:30 p.m. start time! We had a great meeting with over 27 members and 10 guests in attendance! JÖrg Lehman was extremely talented, funny and provided an in depth “All about the Light” presentation. Much of his content covered the foundation of “lighting” but provided excellent samples/visuals of how lighting concepts can look under different circumstances. Again, superb choice of speakers Denny! Jöerg and his photography associates were extremely friendly and very generous with free goodies. There were some lucky winners that received some awesome Bay Photo printing gift certificates and also awarded - a custom Lightroom preset package by Kim at Cottage Industry! NCPP June Survey results were also discussed at the board meeting and we are eager to begin planning new programs! Woo woo. First, we clearly understand what you are looking for in future speakers! We will see to it that future speakers will be in best alignment with your photography interests. Secondly, Night School is coming back to life! We are still in the early stages of planning but have over 5 studios signed up to participate. We will be discussing and planning a calendar of quarterly events soon. Third, Mentor/Mentee program is up and running with a few connections already taking place and thanks to everyone who signed up! We will be working on ideas for building a program that works effectively and is mutually beneficial for all parties. Lastly, Field Trips - in association with NorCalPhotogs meetup group is building momentum too! Wayne has some great ideas and future plans! There are many more goals to consider but these above items received the most attention from you. People’s Choice had a few photographer entries! Congratulations goes to…1st Place – Wayne Miller with “The Girlz”, 2nd Place – Wayne Miller with an Ipad Wedding Album and 3rd Place – Trina Tuel with “Peacock”. Look for the new Focal Point to read all about these artists and their work. Thank you for your submissions, they were all very nice. Special thanks to Wayne Miller, Denny Weigand, Tom O’Connor, Mark Gebhardt, Trina Tuel, Mike Kirwan, Malcolm Slight, Stacey Flurscheim, Tony Gotelli and Nicole Gee for their assistance throughout the evening. Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success. -Henry Ford Warm regards, Kevallyn NCPP Mission Statement: The Northern California Professional Photographers is an organization dedicated to advancing the business of professional photography. Our purpose is to create an environment amongst professional photographers that will inspire each of us and to help one another grow as business professionals and artists. 4

AUGUST 2011

Preparing your image for "Projected" Image Comp This article will remain permanently in the Focal Point. Here are the basics for creating your "Projected Image" file. We will be setting the file type, dimensions, color space, jpg quality, pixels per inch and file name that that will qualify for NCPP Projected Image Comp. These requirements are the same as PPA with the exception in NOTE 2 below. 1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal. 2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp. 7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page. 9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention: • Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). • Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg 11. More information for download or viewing at. NOTE 1: If you plan to submit any of these images to PPA, I would initially save this file as a layered PSD or TIFF. When I was done and ready to submit to NCPP, I would then save it again as a jpg with all of the requirements listed above and submit the jpg. This way if you later decide to enter this same image with PPA, you can open your PSD/TIFF and make any changes required for PPA. NOTE 2: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except: • PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg • Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES: • Cost per each image is $5.00 prior to the Monday, (at midnight), prior to the Tuesday meeting. Fee is to be paid via the NCPP PayPal link. • E-mail images to 2ndvp@ncpponline.org. Limit of 20 Projected images allowed per meeting. This is at the discretion of the Print Chair on a month by month basis.

Best of Show July 2011 - "The Girlz" by Wayne Miller

“The Girlz This image was captured at the bunkers of Fort Barry in Marin overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It was a Photo de Tour Gang (Photo Safari) outing and Lisa Duncan brought along some teens to model for us. The bunkers had an area below the gun turret which housed the soldiers that worked there. It has been heavily tagged with graffiti for several years and most likely a party place for teens. It has since been sealed off so you cannot get into this area now. I used a speedlight with an umbrella and radio trigger to get the shot with my Canon 5d Mk2, 2470mm lens at 50mm, f/3.2, and an ISO of 640. There are two separate shots combined into the final image and I added burn/dodging in Photoshop. I had in mind what I wanted the final image to look like at the time of the shot, so I set up the two shots to get as close as possible to that target.
